LTTE fighting fiercely for its last bastion

Heavy fighting erupted at Puthukudirippu over the last two days. Around 200 casualties are reported from the Army, which includes around 25 soldiers KIA as the Army takes on close to 600 hardcore Tigers backed by a growing softcore comprising mainly of forcibly recruited civilians.

Fighting erupted particularly along the A-35 Parantan-Kilinochchi-Mulaitivu road on the western flank as TF-4 attempts to recapture the road from the Tigers. Fighting was also concentrated around an earth bund and trench line built by the Tigers to guard the strategically located town of Puthukudirippu.

Recent changes to the battle-hardened leadership in the Army's frontline fighting Divisions including 57, 58, 59, TF-2,3 and 4 at the Bridage Command-level and the fact that the Tigers are fighting for their last bastion have contrbuted to the complexities on the ground.

The Tigers, who have been fighting for the last 25yrs cannot be expected to fold particularly with its back against the wall that easily. However this IS the Tigers' last bastion and it WILL fall. The flow of civilians into government areas has been severely hampered by the fresh fighting, particularly after the attack behind the 59's line early this month. Both the Tigers and the civilians have nowhere else to go and right now, the fiasco can end only in the way the LTTE intend it to.

Need for New Global Conventions

On Feb. 9, an LTTE suicide bomber killed herself inside a crowded transit camp maintained by the government for displaced Tamil civilians in northern Sri Lanka. She killed and injured scores of Tamil men, women, and children awaiting transport to safer areas. A day later, the LTTE shot and killed 19 civilians as they attempted to cross over to government held areas. The incident was not widely reported in international media, perhaps due to its low political appeal. However, it is absolutely imperative that we resolve—as a global community—that no rebel group or government be allowed to commit such crimes against humanity again.

As a Sri Lankan who has spent most of his life in a brutal conflict between the government and the LTTE—also known as the Tamil Tigers—I have seen many instances in which crime against helpless civilians could have been avoided had the global community devised better mechanisms and conventions to those affected by conflict.

Just as gravity pulls together the local chaotic movements of water droplets to orchestrate the outer geometric identity of a waterfall, conventions pull together human turmoil to orchestrate the notion of humanity. The Tamil Tigers can perpetrate the above crime and face mere condemnation from a few countries, because almost no convention to protect war-affected communities exerts enough pressure on rebel groups who abuse civilians. Nearly all mechanisms are devised to limit the scope of military action that a government can take to face a rebellion, which has been proven insufficient to protect internally displaced persons. Moreover, this pressure imbalance is often abused by parties with vested interests to interfere in the internal politics of war-affected countries like Sri Lanka, further compounding the vicious cycle for those affected.

Modern conflicts with sophisticated international involvements—combined with the bitter experiences faced by countries like Sri Lanka during the colonial past—often lead such governments to take extreme precautions to ensure no covert foreign force creeps into their internal politics again. This was evident in Sri Lanka when the government ordered all non-governmental organizations except the International Committee of Red Cross to leave rebel-held areas in September 2008. This action was taken after Sri Lankan authorities learned that several NGOs had wittingly or unwittingly given material aid to the Tamil Tigers.

For example, the government’s unmanned aerial vehicles identified heavy equipments belonging to an NGO called “Norwegian People’s Aid” being used by the LTTE to build a complex network of massive earth bunds around its major strongholds, such as Killinochchi and Mulattivu. Some bunds were longer than 30 miles and rose above 10 feet. When questioned, the NPA replied that LTTE robbed the machinery from them. The government’s position was further consolidated when the program officer of another NGO, called “ZOA,” stated that he would remain with the LTTE to fight against the government, thus disobeying the demand to move out of the rebel-held area.

The civilians of the country were victimized most out of this political drama. Therefore, there is great need to introduce innovative global conventions to exert adequate pressure on NGOs operating in war-affected countries—especially with a colonial history—to absolutely honor the sovereignty of the country. The pressure from the donors alone has proven to be insufficient in the Sri Lankan case.

Furthermore, in the absence of independent information sources to assess the situation of IDPs trapped between the warring parties, the global community should empower international organizations like the United Nations to use modern technology such as satellite imagery and reconnaissance aircrafts to verify claims made by various parties. For instance, the Sri Lankan government claimed that the Tamil Tigers had moved more than six heavy artillery guns into the governmentally declared safe zone to invite return fire to civilian neighborhoods. The LTTE, on the other hand, claimed that the government forces had shelled a hospital in Puthukkudyiruppu. This hit the headlines of many international media. The only way the government could prove it was false was to take images using a Beechcraft. Had there been powerful global conventions to allow the UN to use modern technology to verify such politically sensitive claims, room for political gains over the lives of innocent civilians could have been blocked. By leaving allowances to political bigotry, we are putting the lives of thousands of civilians at risk.

Due to the fact that communities and their aspirations continue to change, conflicts are an indispensable reality in our societies. My definition of peace is an atmosphere in which harmonious change can occur. Therefore, I am stressing the need to introduce innovative global conventions to exert balanced pressure on all stakeholders in a conflict zone. This would keep disturbances within the frame of humanity, just as gravity orchestrates droplets colliding without repeatable pattern into a waterfall.

Usually in our society, if someone does a good job like that, the others get nervous and ended up kicking the guy out. I hope it is not the case with Dr. PK. The other Doctors in the government can do the talk with a stick well though.

Few weeks ago there was an interview with GR and he did not do well at all. Considering that, I am very pleased with Dr. PK.

Travis Smiley did a remarkable job too and he is a well balanced journalist. Somehow our people convinced him to take up on the Sri Lanka issue on the show.

MIA finally show on her foot.

She hurt the Tamil cause tremendously. Tomorrow, they will protest in DC with shame.

OMG, What I have done? I had everything under my control in 2005. I was controlling nearly 1/3rd (20,000 sq km) of Sri Lanka and nearly 2/3rd (over 800km) of coastal line. I had a personal income of over US$30 million a month which was purely controlled by me. I had over 400 hard core fighters as my personal body guards. There were nearly one half million civilians working under me doing everything which I wanted them to do. I had army of over 20,000 cadres to guard my eelam. How many years, I have enjoyed this supreme power.

How I managed to loose almost everything within so short period of time? Now I am like a hunted tiger surrounded and haunted ruthlessly by the SLA. Soon I will go mad. They are going to kill me and my son. My daughter and wife are also not safe even in Canada. Once the Diaspora came to know the truth about eelam they will kill my wife, daughter and my sister too.

I shouldn’t have crossed Mahinda Rajapakshe and Sarath Fonseka so badly. Now, I am finish and kapoth.

This was a response to a comment in Peter's blog.

Captain Cook you said 2nd generation tamils dont care. In countary many do care and thats why they volunteer and help in organisations like TRO, protest against the artrocities of the government of Sri Lanka on the people or eelam.

I met a Sri Lankan recently and he was born in Sri lanka but raised in Malaysia. His fahter came to malaysia to work in the army. He is from the sinhalese community. He told me that he was sick of the discrimination by the Malays there on him. He speaks chinese and also has picked up a bit of tamil apart from knowing Malay. I told him that there are Malays in Sri lanka too. He said that even for holidays he did not want to go to a country where there are Malays.

He is a bank manager and is considered already to be too high for a non malay. He said they are trying to dislodge him from that position. He said he was moving into bussiness and was not too worried. The irony is that your people do the same thing to the people of eelam. Just like in Malaysia you treat the people of eelam like foreigners. Yet you do not wish to end your occupation of their state.

He is a nice man. In general people of eelam do not hate the people of Sri Lanka because there are alot of good people from Sri Lanka. However your people did vote in sucessive governments that reconigsed that Sri Lanka was a mono ethnic country with a mono religion. This led to the forced federation of eelam and Sri Lanka as ceylon to become devoid in 1972. Your people voted for it yet in reality do not wish to accept an eelam.

Sri Lankan army's gains against Tamil rebels too dearly bought, some soldiers' families say

Kuliyapitiya, Sri Lanka–In a parking lot off the main street of this town in Sri Lanka's lush "coconut triangle," a recruiting drive is taking place.

Standing next to a red school bus emblazoned with military posters and with loudspeakers mounted in the windows, three army commandos chat with a group of young men who seem impressed by the soldiers' camouflage uniforms, special forces badges and high-cut leather boots.

Posters around this town a three-hour drive north of Colombo show pictures of local youths who have enlisted and ask residents to donate blood. Radio ads encourage people to "join the winning side."

It's understandable why the army has focused on Kuliyapitiya. Smaller farming communities such as this one, where job prospects are scarce, have been especially fertile ground for Sri Lanka's military in its decades-long civil war against the separatist Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam.

"It used to be that kids grew up wanting to be doctors and lawyers; now they want to join the army," said Chandana Bulathsinhala, who works for an opposition member of parliament here.

The recruitment has come at a cost. This area of 150,000 has buried 5,000 soldiers over the past few years, Bulathsinhala said. In recent months, there have been as many as three funerals a week.

Sitting on a sagging mattress in her cramped clay-tiled roof home, a cat curled up next to her, Kusuma Gunawardana wiped away tears as she talked about her son.

Two weeks ago, the 24-year-old soldier disappeared near Elephant Pass, a key access point to the Jaffna peninsula in the north. The police came to tell Gunawardana her tall, thin boy had vanished in a firefight against the Tigers.

"There's been nothing since then. No offers of help, nothing," she sobbed. "I want to know what's happened to him. I want to end this feeling."

Steps from Gunawardana's front door, a poster pays tribute to Alimanka, a local commando who died during fighting in Jaffna. "Brother, you have not died. You bloom as a flower among us."

Brig. Udaya Nanayakkara said 3,700 Sri Lankan soldiers have been killed since July 2006.

The families of fallen soldiers keep receiving their paycheques – Gunawardana still gets about $220 a month – until a time when they would have reached age 55.

Families also get a lump-sum payment worth about $820. That figure is doubled if the soldier was married, Nanayakkara said.

But it's small solace to Gunawardana. "This government is to blame as well," she said. "How many more boys have to die? It would have been better to have him living and not go in the military, even if we had to go and beg."

The difference between Colombo and towns like Kuliyapitiya is striking. In Sri Lanka's oceanside capital, the war is celebrated.

Last weekend, at a cultural fair called Deyata Kirula, hundreds of thousands of spectators packed a fairground to see signs of Sri Lanka's progress.

The most popular exhibits were the military ones. Crowds crushed around a recently captured Tamil Tigers submarine. Children sat on anti-aircraft guns and next to grenade launchers as grinning parents snapped photos. At one exhibit, a soldier showed a pair of Buddhist monks how to work an AK-47 rifle.

But for many families, the wounds will never heal.

On Jan. 9, 1997, Samantha Perera went missing during fighting in Jaffna. Three years later, the military declared him dead, though his body hasn't been recovered.

Nine years on, the family still can't put up his photo because his father can't take the pain.

"He cries at least two or three times a day, still," said Jayantha Perera, Samantha's younger brother. "He's not the same person."

Back in Kuliyapitiya, 19-year-old Koolitha Mancanayaka said goodbye to his friends, hours after enlisting. Just as the poster ordered, he was ready to go to war.

"My family at first wasn't impressed with my decision," he said. "But they have given a good verdict now."

What we are seeing is a vicious circle where falling currencies are ratcheting up the real burden of East Europe's $1.74 trillion foreign debt, which in turn leads to more capital flight.

Some $400bn must be rolled over this year – an impossible challenge. Unless this poisonous dynamic is stopped by outside help from the IMF, the European Central Bank, and the leading political powers of the EU, we risk a full-fledged meltdown.

its not the Ampalawanpokkanai town. but yes 58 has entered the GENERAL area of Ampalawanpokkanai ( outskirts). havent crossed the lagoon to safe zone yet.

PTK is not fallen yet. 53 has been engaged with the massive earth bund in the south of PTK since yday evening with SLAF providing CAS. meanwhile earlier yday TF2 and TF4 were pushed back beyond the A35 after an early night assault by the ltte but the lost territory was recaptured and further advanced by TF2 and TF4 by yday evening.

Army Poised to Liberate Last Town Under Terror Clutches

*Army 58 Division elements manoeuvring from the North are in the process of dominating Ampalavanpokkani area situated just 2 km from the northern parameters of the Puthukkudduyirppu built-up. Also, the elements of the same division manoeuvring from the North and the Northwest have positioned themselves just 3-5 km from the built-up.


*The locations of the fighting can be placed on a curved line drawn counter clockwise from north of Puthukkudduyirppu built-up to the west, up to the A-35.

*Meanwhile troops of the Task Force 4, manoeuvring from the Southwest of Puthukkudduyirppu, have established their positions just 2-3 km short of the western parameters of the Puthukkudduyirppu built-up.

*The newly formed Task Force 8 solders inducted to the battlefield form the South of the Puthukkudduyirppu built-up, too have started moving northwards


So PTK is surrounded from North, North West, West, South West, South & from South East.

Entire Amplavanpkkani area comes under army control

Sri Lanka Army 58 Division troops have brought the entire Ampalavanpokkani area under their control this afternoon (Feb 20).

According to the battlefield sources, troops of 10 SLLI (Sri Lanka Light Infantry) and 6 GW (Gamunu Watch) have crushed the last LTTE strongholds in the area in an offensive launched this morning. Troops have so far found seven bodies of LTTE cadres along with five T-56 riffles.

Meanwhile, sources said that the terrorist have been firing 122mm artillery at troops from guns positioned in the no-fire-zone. Troops are now manoeuvring further south towards the northern borders of the Puthukkudiyiruppu built-up.

Ampalavanpokkani is a remote village situated on the western banks of the Challai lagoon, about 8 km north of the Puthukkudiyiruppu junction

According to the Dailymirror Map, "Ampalavanpokkani" is within the Safe Zone just below the "Putumattalan".

So is this means:
1). "Putumattalan" also downed?
2). Entire northern sector of PTK is crossed by 58?

Given the fact that SF/Commandos are few steps ahead of currently liberated areas, it seems now we have full coverage.

These cant be just infliritaotrs..they are suiciders..which may had big picture plan in the back of our divisions or IDP.

Once we have rest in Bag, it is better some divisions turn back and doa clean sweep again..

I think Dailymirror got the Ampalavanpokkanai town wrong.

Even defence.lk says Ampalavanpokkanai is in the west bank of Challai lagoon.

if you look at the satellite image, note there is a built up just west of the marker demarcated as Ampalavanpokkanai. I think that's the actual Ampalavanpokkanai. The place marked in Daily Mirror has only a few houses in the east bank of chalai lagoon.

my contact could not confirm the news report that stated palamattalan capture..

the bottom line is..

The 55th is now at active defence strategy. Unlike other divisions the 55th has very little cover from behind.. If some infiltrations occur it would get real ugly, and the consequnces could be very higher that the situation couple of weeks back.. because of bad roads and the lagoon marsh terrain the mobility of back up troops coming to aid of the 55th if some need occurs will be limited.

The entire A35 up to puthu has been captured.
If u concentrate on the maps u can see the tactic very clearly.

The 57 div was to come to the east border of the visuamadu area(which now they have) and consolidate defences. NOw they have done that. When that happened 58th was given the all clear to blast through the other areas.

There was a it of plan change in 59/tf8 scenario.. earlier 591 was to advance along the eastern coast and meet the 55th.. And other brgades (593,592,594) was to advance to puthu.

but now the entire 59div has been assigned to the eastern coast and a new offensive div the Tf8 was deployed in the puthu south area.

couple of brigades of the 53rd and the entire Tf3 troops strengthen rear of the other task forces.

now as u see the 58th is not attempting to go head to head at the puthu defences because of the civilian factor. It is foolish to do that without heavy gun cover fire.
The forward offensive elements (2cr) are attacking and capturing surrounding areas and supply routes. while snipers deployed at south defenses are taking targets.

when puthu falls(tomorrow morning or late today) i expect Tf4 to consolidate defences at puthu general area..

then Tf8/58 will move towards the coast while 59/55 advance north and south respectively.

There is a lot of confusion about the Safe Zone,but forwad elements have entered the Zone yesterday to melt out the civilians before taking out the last LTTE-guys. 55th advances southwards. “India has formally indicated its interest in evacuating civilians. We are open to accepting logistical help from friendly countries like India,” the envoy said.

Colombo, however, underlined that such a decision will depend on the realities on the ground.

“The details of such an evacuation plan can be worked out later. It will be contingent on the situation on the ground. The LTTE is creating obstruction in the government’s plan to move civilians to safety,” the envoy said.

“We are committed to ensuring the safety and security of all civilians,” he said.

The envoy welcomed External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee’s statement in parliament on Wednesday on the situation in Sri Lanka in which he asked the LTTE to lay down arms and offered India’s assistance to Sri Lanka in evacuating civilians trapped in the military conflict.

“It’s a constructive statement. It reflects very accurately ground realities. It’s a forward-looking statement that shows the path ahead for peace and reconciliation,” he said.

In one of the most scathing statements ever against the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE), Mukherjee recalled that it was an outlawed group in India and accused the Tigers of having “done much damage to the Tamil community.”

“As the conflict enters what may be the final phase of military operations, the LTTE would best serve the interest of the Tamils by immediately releasing all civilians (in its zone) and laying down arms,” he said.

“India is ready to facilitate the evacuation of civilians trapped in the area of conflict, working with the government of Sri Lanka and the ICRC (International Committee of the Red Cross) who would take responsibility for the security, screening and rehabilitation of these internally displaced persons,” Mukherjee said.

The Battle of Gettysburg, was fought in the hauntingly beautiful farming town of Gettysburg, in western Pennsylvania. I lived and worked in nearby Pittsburgh for several years, and I loved discovering every stone wall, glade, hill and monument of the Gettysburg battlefield. No place looks less like a battle field than Gettysburg; the serenity of its green rolling hills masking the brutal collision of arms witnessed there, that fateful July 1-3 in 1863. This battle was the largest (94,000 Union troops vs. 72,000 Confederates) and most costly in life and limb (USA:3,200 killed, 23,000 total;CSA: 4,700 killed, 23,200 total) fought in the US Civil war.

In winning this battle, the Union Army of the Potomac led by Gen. George Meade turned the tide of the war against the Confederate Army of Northern Viginia led by Gen. Robert E. Lee, that until then, had bested the Union forces in almost every battle. The Northern states at that time had lost faith in their Army to win the war, and the political tide was turning against President Lincoln who was up for re-election. Lincoln needed this victory both to survive as President, and to preserve the Union.

I am bit puzzled why GOSL gave a nod for India to get involved with evacuating civilians from the conflict zone.

SL has the full capacity to evacuate remaining civilians. We expect about 35,000 civilians to be trapped in the newly marked Safe Zone when we encircle the Safe Zone.

That will be a pure 'hostage rescue situation' than an evacuation situation. We are not expecting Indian Commandos to come here and rescue the hostages (anyway, we saw their brilliant performance live very recently :-).

Is this kind of giving some kind of part in this operation?

The issue is, India and RAW are two different beasts with two different souls. RAW is an Old School Fart which sees Sri Lanka as an enemy that needs to be destabilized at any cost i.e. on the cost of the life of Rajiv Ghandi.

As soon as we invite Indians, we will be inviting RAW too. That means old game of Cat and Mouse. So, why we invite trouble?

Let our forces sort out the mess. They are hundred times better than Indians.

I may be little ignorant in following one person listed there who is a journalist -Sonali Samarasinghe.

This may not be a good time to discuss these. However, I think we have to be reasonable in some areas too.

She works for Sunday Leader and has well documented how some funds were channeled to LTTE. What we saw was that the whole case against Tiran Alles etc dropping recently.

If Sonali's allegations were entirely false, she should be sued and dealt with appropriately.

My personal opinion is that on owing to lack of judgment or 'our own luck' the alleged transaction has taken place. Mahinda became the President, and LTTE messed up with him thinking that LTTE could play the same game that they played with the other Presidents.

This is what I think that happened next. Mahinda having all the Kurahan stuck up in his blood said, "enough is enough you scumbags... you were paid to do a job, you did the job and the deal is over! If you want to mess with this Mahinda, you will be f*cked into pieces!". So, he is 'f' ing LTTE in big time delivering his Kurahan worth (according to Sonali, about Rs. 700M worth Kurahan). Good on him and lucky nation, Mahinda & Co.

So, he is doing it and we are certain that he will do it to the end.. Once Mahinda delivered all the Kurahan worth, we will forgive him for his lack of judgment (or our luck -- think about what would happen to the country if the PWP Ranil became the President) that led to initial incidents.

One of the key points I want to make is, Sri Lanka NEEDS 'Politically NOT motivated' Investigative Journalists!! It is a MUST! They will be real Gods (or the Guardian Angels of the nation) who would protect our country's wealth from greedy politicians (whom we trust to be the Guardians of our nation's wealth).

We need more and more investigative journalists exposing corruption in Sri Lanka. After LTTE, the biggest war we have yet to fight is the corruption. Without eliminating corruption to a higher-degree, we can not thread the path to a 'developed nation'. Corruption is the biggest factor that keeps nations poor!

So, my request is, we will watch Sonali more, and see whether her journalism is based on sinister cheap political motives or true patriotism that focuses on guarding our national wealth.

They left in busloads,our Hela Patriots,to Washington DC, this morning.... They came as far as Florida, and some flew in from as far as California.

The peelam maniacs from Toronto were given a real hard time at the border in Buffalo, NY, by the Immigrations and the Dept of Homeland Security... Some were turned back.. ha ha ha!!!!

But, most importantly, the White House has been alerted by a certain Sri Lankan bigwig, and the Dept. of Homeland Security will be clandestinely recording the peelamists at the request of the FBI. Hopefully, this will lead to a great many more arrests of these maniacs.

ok,hi guys,i am in the army-staff in Colombo and i am not a fake. I tell you the truth about the actual situation,because there are simply too many rumours in all countless blogs and media. PTK has not fallen yet,but the town is encircled from north,west and south and our troops are preparing for the final assault tomorrow and sunday. We plan to seize the town till sunday evening or monday morning. Then the LTTE will be find itself in a hopeless situation,with the back to the coast. It´s possible,that the remaining coastline will fall to our troops without much fighting in the coming week. I repeat: PTK WILL FALL SUNDAY OR MONDAY,TOMORROW WE PLAN TO MOVE IN!
