Rescue operation an unexpected success!

The Chronology of the Operation today...

Around 11.45pm- 12 midnight, a team of Special Forces (1SF) and another team from 2 Commando led by Colonels Athula Kodippili and Ralph Nugera breached the 12km LTTE earthbund.

The teams cleared a stretch of 3km from Puthumathalang towards Valaimadam. Heavy fighting erupted between the LTTE and the Special Forces. Large volumes of LTTE artillery and mortar fire from the NFZ started landing on the LTTE bund.

The Special Forces took the lead and went on an aggressive bunker-busting operation. Troops reported heavy casualties to the LTTE via communication sets. By the time the bund was cleared, 11 Special Forces soldiers including a Special Forces Captain had laid down their lives.

Soon afterward, thousands of civilians took to their heels and started running towards the now breached LTTE earth bund as Tigers started running in the opposite direction unable to face the SF and Commando squads. The Special Forces and Commandos temporarily halted their offensives and allowed the civilians to come.

3 Black Tigers hiding among the civilians blasted bombs strapped to their bodies killing 17 civilians. Total casualties to civilians in the 3 blasts was around 200.

At the same time, 2000 civilians escaping by boats towards Pulmoddai were picked up by the Navy. Another 5000 were rescued by a special team sent in by Brigadier Prasanna Silva of the 55 Division.

By 10pm today, rescued civilians, fed and rested at Puthumathalang, were arriving in steady numbers at welfare centers at Vavuniya. The Army was welcoming them with a hot meal and other refreshments while MIC searched for suicide bombers. One black tiger suicide bomber has been identified so far.

The Army was extremely happy with the 38,000+ civilians they rescued within the first day of the rescue mission and having breached the largest remaining LTTE earth bund today. Another large rescue of this nature could really put the 'cat amongst the pigeons', the cat in this scenario being the elite units of the Army.

During the entire operation, all high ranking officers of the Army, Navy and Air Force, the Defence Secretary and even President Rajapakse were awake and providing moral support to the frontline troops, led so fittingly by the 1st Brigade of the Special Forces, the oldest squadrons of the SF and 2 Commando, the spearhead of all 58 Division operations.

Dear folks at Defencewire:

There was pin drop silence from you folks. Everyday, morning and night I came to the blog but no change.

Oh! I wish I joined the Army, before Kamal Gunda went in. Oh! I wish I had the guts to brave all odds to join the Army in the early 80's.

I want to see these SF, Commandos and all combat soldiers. I want to look at them and admire them. What more can a man do?

They will cherish these experiences for a long time. At least, they have acted in a show, of which I could only dream!

My deepest gratitude to our security forces, SF Commanders, the Defence Secy and H. E. the President. You folks have made me a proud Sri Lankan :)

DW,
Thanx for the quick updates..

1. Any specific reason why LTTE retreat without any continued resistance?
2. Will SLA go for a clean sweep after the 12 hour offer lapse, backed with heavy fire power?
3. How probable is capturing remaining LTTE leadership alive/wounded?

Thanx DW..

Typical of the LTTE to murder fleeing civilians. It is sad that 17 more Thamil civilians had to die at the hands of the this barbaric outfit headed by the worst "leader" since Pol Pot.

I am very sorry about the 11 KIA from the SLA. Valiant men, who knew they were dying so thousands of Thamils could live. Few other forces in the world would do this sort of calculated sacrifice of its best soldiers. The pity is that the Thamil Diaspora has no idea, and the Western media is only now getting the gist of it.

DW do provide details of the KIA. The world needs to know who they are.

Our deep gratitude and admiration to all those brave soldiers. We must not forget the 11 members and Captain of the forces that laid down their lives to rescue so many. I hope the moderate Tamil Community worldwide will acknowledge their bravery as their families have sacrificed so much.

President Mahinda Rajapakse and his able team has gone down in history. The hurdles were many not only from within the country. The expatriates watched closely but those who were active ranged from furiously active to totally indifferent. However, this victory is for all.

Now there is only the last bit to go to capture the most brutal megallomaniac the world has ever seen since Hitler. A special place must be ready for him in hell!

Political Observer said...

It is likely the LTTE's hold on the new cadre is very, very weak. After all the capture and killing of over 700 of its best in Puthukudurippu must have had its consequences. That Op is one that Bollywood films remake, before Hollywood ever will.

While winning against a cowardly outfit becomes habitual, the SLA has to be deeply worried and careful. Cowards fight was a logic that is totally difference to those of brave men and women.

It is thus important to think twice about running after the LTTE as they melt into the civilian population. The GOSL must continue aerial videos and it will leave its telling mark on how to better view the conflict.

This current aerial video alone is worth 25 years of trying to tell the truth about the barbarity of the LTTE. I am not exaggerating.

The SLA is not the IDF and does not receive a carte blanche from the Western powers. That is because the SLA has no dedicated base of support in the US or anywhere else. And, unlike the IDF, and the SLA is committed to saving civilians from the LTTE. (The IDF was never committed to saving Palestinian civilians.)

There is however a lesson in legitimacy here. Not having unqualified US support is good in the long run. The US will hold Sri Lanka to a higher standard than any other nation in the world, as Sri Lanka is small and relatively powerless, in addition to not having a dedicated lobby group in the US.

The GOSL will be under pressure to make the right humanitarian decisions (even if it can be wrongly accused or imagined that it did not). This will lead to good soldiers not being put in harms way, while also saving them from being exposed to accusations of killing civilians. (I am referring to substantiated ones, not the ones Tamilnet provides everyday.)

I still have not seen a deliberate effort to land on the beaches to take IDPs away and give the BBC crew a better look.

I am very glad the GOSL found another way to give the world a 'look see' of the hapless human shields.

The better way it to put BBC cameras on Landing Craft, and let them beam it up live for their Disapora viewers and Western audience to debate over just how barbaric the LTTE is. My assessment now is that even in Canada, the LTTE will be done with, the same way no one cared for the Lockerbie bombers. It is crucial that BBC footage of the civilians fleeing the LTTE is played in Canada as well, as that is the single largest source of LTTE brainwashing of the West.

What needs to be said is this in addition to the commentary provided that is obvious. Notice how the civilians are leaving in a single file. These are people used to marching when there are mines, which the LTTE has laid by the thousands.

MR may also be forced to accept their assistance without much overview due to econimic constraints leading to a 'hand over'of the territory gained so dearly. What steps and proposals SF and the military hierarchy bring about now to make this will not happen ever. Will the High Security Zones be under the PCs?Good example is how we bungled tsunami aid not being strict at the time just to get the aids somehow. We should put steps to sift and filter aids rather than embracing enmasse

The only sad part is, what ever we do, what ever we show, it does not matter to the west. The only thing they want now is to keep the LTTE alive some how. Even if we manage to destroy LTTE, they will do their best to create some kind of a problem in SL. This is clear by looking at the attitude of the Western Media towards SL. They have very little good thing to say about SL.
Even when the war is over, we have to be very careful with the west. We have to monitor the INGO's, western diplomats e.t.c. They tried their best to destroy SL, and would continue to do so in the future as well. We must have pissed off quite a few western countries by now and they would not be happy that we won militarily. That would be hard pill to swallow for these guys who have failed in Afghanistan and Iraq. Most of this guys would do their best to get rid of MR politically. Therefore MR should take special care after this.

I think guys like Blake are very dangerous to SL national Security. He is a False friend. I saw some footage of him in a Temple once. A guy like this should never be allowed in to a Temple. Only thing he would bring to a Temple is Destruction.

So watch out SL, don't put your guard down after winning the fight against LTTE.

SLA should try to identify the Suicide bombers with the help of the Civilians and provide their names and photos to the news agencies. If we have names, it would be more effective naming and shaming these people. Also if possible we should allow some of these Civilians who were attacked by the Suicide bombers to talk to the International Media. This way we can get international media supports as well.

Ran-nil, Attanayaka, Karunanayake, Sajith Premadasa, SB and the clan will also have a place for betraying and selling our motherland temporarily to LieTTE terrorists.

If any one of them wants to clear their name, they should join forces with MR, leaving Ran-nil's UNP to form a national government. We do not want to spend money any more on elections…We should utilise these wasted funds on developments. The national government should run at least for 10 years in line with the Mahinda Chintana. All corruptions will vanish and “Mathata Thitha” will help people move away from alcohol addiction and contribute to a better living standard within families.

We could beat the devil out of LieTTE and why not beat all other local devils with the same tenacity and application?

This is an ULGY manifestatyion of the "Greater Dravidian Nation" disease that is consuming Tamil Nadu, and may soon destroy the INDIAN UNION as well.

We need to keep such ugly COMMUNAL POLITICS out of Sri Lanka!

DK’s anti-brahmin rhetoric draws flakBy R Rajagopal
ExpressBuzz.com
April 20, 2009

The call of Dravidar Kazhagam leader K Veeramani to “reject the Aryan leaders” in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections has been seen by many as a ploy to promote the politics of Dravidianism, particularly that of the DMK, in the State.

The DK leader, who is supporting the DMK in the State, has used his anti-Brahmin rhetoric quite brazenly in his meetings. And his latest comment to vote for only Dravidian leaders in the Lok Sabha elections, many believe, can be seen as a move to alienate the Brahmin community in the State.

The occasion was the function to stage DMK founder Anna’s famous play Sivaji Kanda Hindu Rajyam at the Periyar Thidal in the city on April 10. The DK leader had reportedly said that on that day, Periyar and Anna had to launch a campaign against the Brahmins in the State in the early fifties -- at a time when the Aryan domination was at its zenith.

Veeramani also deplored that some Dravidian leaders had become slaves of an Aryan in the State, though there were enough indications to throw up the idea that the MDMK, Left parties and the PMK had come under the influence of AIADMK leader J Jayalalithaa.

The Brahmins in the city had taken these remarks of the DK leader against them very seriously with many of them openly saying that they would not vote for a Dravidian party like the DMK this time, which enjoyed the support of the DK. They said that they would choose some other party, which would be ready to work for the welfare of the Brahmin community in the State.

M Narayanan of Triplicane, a bank employee, said that he would vote for the BJP this time though he had cast his vote for the AIADMK during last time. S Sundaram, a doctor in Royapettah, said that he would not vote for the Dravidian parties like the DMK and the AIADMK this time, and instead vote for a party that carried an agenda to promote the welfare of the Brahmins. He said that he preferred a party like the BJP to others in the poll fray.

K Doraiswamy of Perambur, a retired government servant, while criticising the DK leader’s support to the DMK, wanted to know why Veeramani had once extended his support to AIADMK leader Jayalalithaa, even after knowing her Aryan leanings, when she was in power in 2001. Was it to safeguard the vast immmoveable property enjoyed by him in the name of Periyar Trust, he asked? He also questioned the wisdom of DK leader in betraying her and joining hands with DMK leader M Karunanidhi, a sworn Dravidian.

Ananda,

fantastic! as ever.

now dravidistan has to first kill motherindia to have a birth. that's a too dangerous task given the facts,

1. dravidistanis don't have an army, an air force, a navy, a commando team.

2. there is little chance of them developing a terrorist outfit in "dravidistan" capable of taking on world's 3rd largest army.

3. infighting in "dravidistan"

4. a powerful military force across the seas which is a force to recon with. IF this southern force joins hands with india, that is the death of dravidistan. what a partnership would it be!!!

i have reason to believe the unwavering indian support has something to do with "dravidistan" and other jokers. india made a strong statement to ITS OWN SEPERATISTS, how ruthless it can be.

Yes, Obama is a big-talker and nothing more...however, the venom from the "Obama administration" comes from Hilary-I too-will-buy-cigar Clinton...as that pathetic cow was bought over by the LTTE in the US during the Democratic Leadership campaign...

Yes, LTTE whores in the US lavishly contributed to her campaign but later she had to return the money as there was a such a loud cry from SL expats (including yours truly here) in the US about "Clinton takes terrorists money"...

However, it is evident that this Obama is nothing but a docile uncle Tom...a see-no-evil, hear-no-evil type of a do-gooder (basically a white-missionary wannabe with a dark tan!:-)) and today he is letting this Hillary-cigar-where-art-thou run away with the the most important foreign policy decisions of his administration...

During the election campaign I told this to many number of people, including our own some brainwashed "liberal minded" Sri Lankans in the US, but they all were more interested in the favorite Bush-bashing of the day than seeing the Obama/Clinton-cigar-where-art-thou for what it was...a weak liberal setup that was going to be the "prayer answered" of the extremists of this world...ha ha ha...Now I say to them "did I not tell you so?"

This hostage release commenced with yet another "earth bund" clearing by the Commando/SF and today I was told that as soon as the op began around mid-night yesterday, the well positioned SF snipers, with special long-range, night-vision weapons not hitherto used in this war (a special-gift from a very friendly country I was told, donated especially for this hostage release op) were able to take out around 30 LTTE whores in in like 20 minutes, in the pitch-dark night...I was told the momma-fuckers did not know where the hits were coming from and some of them blidly started shooting at the sky (thinking that's where the "God's Wrath" was coming from! :-)) :-)) :-))

Imagine the terror of the LTTE whores would have had...not knowing when they were going to get popped in the dark...and despite best possible cover they took!!!

I loved it!

More to follow...stay tuned...the NFZ-ghosts have only just had the appetizer!

wow!!!!

However, what is noteworthy is that near 10 minute pause...where the screams of dying & wounded LTTE whores pierced the night...it was really eerie I was told...such screams of agony in the night not heard before as a participant had reported...eerie cry of wailing and how the night sea wind was carrying it back and forth like a fcuking wicked joke...agonizing cries calling for reinforcements and med-evacuations which never came (as the back-lagging LTTE fuckers were equally terror-striken in the dark, not knowing what/when some ungodly deadly-bullet will hit them)...

ha ha ha...someone should one day make a movie out of this "worlds largest hostage rescue"...(perhaps this humble OaOA might do it!)...

The role of USA on conflicts in south Asia has a long history. Unfortunately some of bloggers in DW believed USA as a friendly country until the last moment when USA starts to show its true colors. If you looked back very carefully, you can see that, the terrorism in Sri Lanka was initiated not exactly by India. It is USA (and some western governments) who made the way to create LTTE through India. What west wanted is not just to break Sri Lanka in to pieces. It will not serve them that much. But they know that dividing Sri Lanka would make the path to create unrest in South India. This will make the way to divide India. Dividing India and China is a dream of western world (they are scared to say it or act openly). It removes two major competitors (economically and militarily) out of the seen. If Sri Lanka is divided western countries would get a good base (so called Elam) to divide India. It would be very difficult for India to defend herself while she is attacked from a few fronts. Divided India will be a long blood bath. They will fight for cast, race, language, rivers etc. etc... This will be a gold mine for west to steal resources in India and made the path to divide China (or at least the threat her).
CIA did their best to make this dream a reality. They were scared to create terrorism in India or Sri Lanka directly. They knew that consequences could be severe, if they were caught. So they used the cat’s hand. Cat was India. First they created the pro western government in Sri Lanka. UNP idiots (JR, Preamdasa, Gamini, Lalith, Ranil…) thought that USA would back them for anything and everything against India since India is pro Russian. Actually USA gave that impression to these idiots. This made India angry against us. Indira wanted to teach us a lesson. There were (and there are) many CIA agents in RAW. They got the green light from Indian government to start terrorists groups in Sri Lanka. All of you know the rest of the story. At the beginning India thought that everything would be under their control. But it was not. Why? It was not because of something special about this uneducated barbarian Prbarkaran.West was all the time behind LTTE secretly. They let pro LTTE Tamils to settle in their countries, collect money and support the war. They provide what ever the support they can provide to elongate the war and finally to make a separate country for LTTE.
India learn her mistakes. China knew what is going on. That's why they support us.
That’s why west need Ranil as the UNP leader. If Ranil is replaced by another Mahinda type leader, it will not serve their need. West know that Ranil will say YES to anything and everything what West ask him to do.
Please remember West will try to drag this war for another 30 years if possible. Thanks for everybody in our lovely country for selecting Mahinda as the president. He selected the correct people to finish this war.

It is expected that another 30 -50K is still trapped behind the second earth bund.

Military expecting only around 10,000-15,000 to remain.

Scores arrested in Paris Tamil protest on Sri Lanka

PARIS, April 20 (Reuters) - Around 180 people were arrested and four injured in Paris on Monday during an unauthorised protest by Tamils that turned violent, a police spokesman said.

Expatriate Tamils have been demonstrating around the world against the Sri Lankan government's conduct of the war against Tamil Tiger rebels. London has been a focus as many Tamils blame Britain, the former colonial power, for denying them a homeland.

Protesters blocked traffic at a junction in northern Paris and threw objects at three buses and police, the spokesman said, adding that four people were slightly injured, including one policeman.

Police described the gathering as an "armed crowd", a term generally used for groups carrying knives, guns or improvised weapons such as metal bars.

A larger demonstration took place in London, where thousands of Tamils blocked streets outside Britain's parliament, accusing the Sri Lankan government of disregarding civilians trapped by the fighting against the Tamil Tigers and demanding a ceasefire.

Moshe Dyan said...

ultimatum,

actually they DID know that. only thing, they don't care.

they never cared.

their ONLY concern was tamil elam by whatever means.

caste differences, financial status disparities, etc. further blinded them.

essentially those who financed the LTTE were (and are) completely blind to humans. most of them only see tamil elam, STILL.

So France knows its ways when it comes to terror war. Britain/Canada/Norway you're long way from learning this.

Isn't this a beauty as they enjoy the harvest of their seeds?

Pondering why the big saviors of Wanni Tamils who block roads to block the freedom of latter, do not conduct a biggy in USA. Don't they know that blocking a road of Uncle Sam will bring virtual capital punishment??

Guys, the Hillary bitch is proving our predictions. But note that one person, however high she is, can do very little in that country. Majority of US bureaucracy is with us, if not for that we'd have never come this far.

West's public face is a multi layered mask. Right now International Pussycats are enjoying the welcome smile on the outer most one.

Bloody battles

Yesterday, the SLA’s 53rd and TF8 suffered heavy casualties mainly due to booby traps while trying to push through the Tiger FDL bordering the NFZ, around 50 infantrymen lost their legs - KIA figure is undisclosed. This was one of the bloodiest days in recent battles. The 58th is positioned to break through the NFZ FDL any time now.

Ares said...

10-15 thousand is a very conservative number. the military believes and this is taking into account the UAV footages from the past few days there cannot be more than another 30,000 people. its difficult to count people from the air!

but yeah i think its about 15,000. mind you out of these people left are many maveera families and people that are technically civilians that support the ltte due to either their political affiliations or loved ones fighting for ltte.

so my point is that we have to exercise maximum caution because this battle will turn bloody. the question is not whether it will turn bloody but when.

yesterdays ops was an overwhelming success. we suffered more casualties than reported my defencewire. i couldnt get confirmation on a count, but unofficially our casualties are 18 dead and about a similar number injured. most of which were walking it seems. this is unofficial so dont quote me.

been away from these blogs till today because reporting on here was getting boring as vajira said in another blog. i really dont like reading personal attacks.

i'm all for constructive civilised conversations!

As soon as this fighting is over, there would be journalist and other information gatherers coming to Sri Lanka to try and create a bad image of U.S. There should be a process that would stop them coming in. Every one should be processed thoroughly for at least first two three months. Foreigners and Diaspora should be made to declare why they are visiting and if they are doing anything other than this there should be a process to jail them.

Open letter to UNICEF, UN
Your website at http://www.unicef.org/media/media_49405.html says that,
“UNICEF is on the ground in over 150 countries and territories to help children survive and thrive, from early childhood through adolescence. The world’s largest provider of vaccines for developing countries, UNICEF supports child health and nutrition, good water and sanitation, quality basic education for all boys and girls, and the protection of children from violence, exploitation, and AIDS. UNICEF is funded entirely by the voluntary contributions of individuals, businesses, foundations and governments.”

“UNICEF is in urgent need of US $3.5million to cover the most immediate needs of the affected population in health and nutrition, water and sanitation, protection and education.”

Now dear UNICEF,

UNICEF in Sri Lanka had access to all these children all these days. How much have you done?

They have FAILED to do their jobs at least in Sri Lanka in,
protection of children from violence,
protection of children from exploitation,
supports child health and nutrition,
quality basic education.

How many years you were loitering in Vanni? How much have done to children in that area?
You have done injustice to children in Vanni, willingly or otherwise. They have failed in Vanni.

It is time to send you (UNICEF or members responsible) out of Sri Lanka. Show course to UN on these matters.

We, Sri Lankan request the money (US $3.5million) that UN is going to allocate direct to SL government to do the job.

Please get out from our country.

Our leaders should not moan or groan now but fully understand the true fact that West, US or India are not friends but are giving whatever 'support' to us now merely because we are on the winning path.As we've done right throughtout this war,we need to grind our way forward as we see the right path not what would be dictated by them. With the war over now, other means and ways of strangling us will be cooked up by them.It will be easily through the way of 'helping' IDPs and rehabilitation with funds and personnel.GOSL should be firm not to give in and to take help on GOSL terms only;good immediate example is tsunami aids.Imagine if GOSL gave into keep all the NGOs in the war zone when they screamed;war would have been stopped in the middle with NGOs' constant bulletins to the IC with unfounded killings! If we let these NGOs,West & India unlimited access to IDPs etc,we will be soon back to square one.We should not loosen the firm hand;Jeremy Page was sent home on biased reporting and today he has given a fairly good report on the situation!Western media will always try to give the negative image to the country with their ulterior motives;their recent interviews with some IDPs are not to tell how releived the people are after escaping the tiger cluthes and their ordeals under the tigers; not a word on those lines but inquiring (& inciting )them how long you are going to be in these IDP camps etc. They want to whip up discontent and trouble in these camps to bring GOSL to its knees.War is not over; could be worse if we do not keep these wolves at arms length!

Yes it was unexpected. The glory is near and the days of Prabhakaran are numbered and numbers are very small. Let’s go back to the unexpected success, are we really blessed and lucky enough to experience the true victory over this barbaric terrorists. There is no doubt that as long as political parties contented with extremists views such as Jathika Hela U(ka)rumaya exists in our motherland. Ever since the existence of these extremists began, who once passed a bill against the Muslim community("sound pollution bill" ,which resulted in sending a prestigious Buddhist monk to Welikada prison), Sri Lanka was covered completely from a dark clou(n)d called MP Ranawaka. As far as these extremists who often act completely against the doctrine of our Lord Gautama Buddha, we the Sri Lankans will never see the light at the end of the tunnel.
