58 Division troops are now 2kms south of EPS. Tigers are positioned along the former forward defence line constructed by the EPS' 54 Division. This FDL is where Hasalaka Gamini Kularatne gave his life in heroic fashion.
58 Division troops, somewhat fatigued by recent exploits into Kilinochchi will probably take some time to retake the area. Further north the Mech Infantry, formerly under Ralph Nugera, is awaiting orders to march under Udaya Herath, Nugera's deputy.
Meanwhile sources indicated that the LTTE maybe constructing another bund at Murusamodai, 10km east of Paranthan. Tigers have moved around 1000 cadres from Kilinochchi to Mulaitivu. Air strikes, MBRL and artillery strikes were launched on identified gathering points to eliminate the build up.
Heavy LTTE mortar and artillery strikes are being launched from this area for the last 10 days. An artillery barrage also fell on Kilinochchi town today. Despite these developments no clear strategy has emerged from the LTTE's side.
The SLA also captured the Iranamadu tank bund today. They recovered 8 bodies of soldiers declared missing in recent confrontations in this area. A large number of LTTE bodies recovered from various places in this fashion were all buried.
A contingent of 15 SBS and RABS units were deployed at Nayaru today to help end any sea tiger infiltrations. The contingent will increase to about 25 boats or 75 SBS/RABS men in due course.

[IPKF vets fear influence loss
(January 03, New Delhi, Sri Lanka Guardian) The fall of Kilinochchi to Sri Lankan government troops is being described by Lanka watchers here as an eclipse of the LTTE’s conventional fighting capabilities, leading to a corresponding diminution in New Delhi’s influence over Colombo for ensuring that the political cause of the Tamils was met.
"We’ve lost the game (to the government of Sri Lanka)," Maj. Gen. Ashok Mehta (Retd), who served with the Indian Peacekeeping Force (IPKF) in Sri Lanka, told this newspaper. "It is anybody’s guess how much of political devolution Sri Lankan Tamils will derive after the marginalisation of the LTTE," he said.
Maj. Gen. Mehta thought the marginalisation of the LTTE would make New Delhi less important strategically for Colombo. "Whatever influence India had would diminish as a result of Sri Lanka being able to handle the situation entirely on its own despite what India may claim about this," he said.
Speaking to this newspaper from Chennai, Col. R Hariharan (Retd), who was earlier the head of intelligence in the IPKF in Sri Lanka in the late 1980s, said the LTTE would have no option now but to retreat to the jungles.
"The last bid of the LTTE to have a conventional army and fight a conventional war is over. The fall of Kilinochchi represents a huge military defeat for the LTTE and will also diminish their political clout. Elephant Pass will be captured soon by the Sri Lankan Army and the Jaffna-Kandy road can be re-opened," Col. Hariharan said.
Maj. Gen. Mehta also said it was a "big irony" that India, which sent troops in 1987 to get Tamils their due, had now abrogated that role entirely into the hands of Colombo. "India has yielded too much more than she should have," he said. "The government of India has been amiss. It was a strategic error not to keep back channels with the LTTE. Even more surprising is that the Tamil Nadu government, which was the most ardent supporter of the LTTE, has completely failed in nudging the government of India into taking some action about keeping the LTTE relevant," he added.
Another former Indian official said the re-occupation of Kilinochchi by the Sri Lankan Army will add to the pride, confidence and morale of the Sri Lankan Army but it would not necessarily undermine the motivation and morale of the LTTE.
Experts feel the LTTE’s leadership now has grown much older compared to the previous years and they doubt whether the rebels will be able to retain their military strength that made them so feared earlier.
Incidentally, India has so far refused to end its military cooperation with Sri Lanka and provides "assistance and training" to the Sri Lankan armed forces. India had earlier made it clear that it would not supply "lethal" arms to Sri Lanka as there was a conflict raging in that country. There have been reports earlier that India has supplied equipment such as radar to Sri Lanka but these reports have never been confirmed by India. Sri Lanka also accounts for nearly half of the foreign naval personnel being trained in India by the Indian Navy, figures submitted earlier by the Union government before Parliament for 2004-05, 2005-06 and 2006-07 had revealed. i saw in a couple of earlier posts that 53th and the 55th divisions are the most trained and equipped divisions of the SLA.. so in my understanding of a "division" SLA has more than 20,000 men at nagarkovil,myhamalai,Killali axis.. is it right?

Really? And leave our country defenceless again against internal and external enemies? It took us 30 years to build the SLDF we have now, to defeat a rag-tag group that we allowed to grow into a near conventional army.
The next time we are caught with our proverbial pants down, we may not have that much time to build an army, and SL may not survive intact.
I believe India is on its way to breaking up....and the first state to secede may well be Tamil Nadu. Then, SL will have face Tamil Nadu's 80 million people reaching out to create a Greater Dravidian Nation, with the first "Greater" part in Sri Lanka. As the boy scouts say, "be prepared"; it will be too late to do it after the horse has been stolen again! Prevention is much better than a Cure.
Why pick Pakistan as the model even though, despite Pakistan's poor record of governance, the Pakistani Army is the only national entity holding the country together in the face of both external and internal enemies?
Why not select Switzerland, Taiwan, Greece and Israel as the comparative models....all countries with large potential enemies among near neighbors? They all have large armies and universal military service, and have fended off, or are fending off, their enemies quite successfully.
To suppress any prospect of a renewed guerilla conflict, we will need many boots on the ground everywhere in Sri Lanka. If the US learned any lesson in Iraq, it is that a high-tech army configured to fight conventional armies, cannot suppress wide-spread guerilla movements...you need the preponderant presence of many boots on the ground for that; your own troops or those of allied locals. The second lesson they learned (in Iraq and Vietnam), is that foreign armies that must ultimately go home, and can't do it by themselves; you need the majority of local people to do it for themselves. Fortunately, Sri Lanka is our own country, and we are the "local people," and we can do it, especially if we homogenize the population countrywide.
When you are caught in a difficult situation, you have to do whatever it takes to survive; and a large Peoples Self Defense Force is precisely what we need.
Clever diplomacy is important, as I also pointed out in my post, but we have to rely on developing our own internal strength as the core/primary defensive weapon.
An oft quoted axiom of diplomacy is that there are no permanent friendships between countries, there are only permanent national interests. Every powerful ally we rely on will want its own pound of flesh in return...Sri Lanka's own history provides many examples (e.g., Use the Dutch to kick out the Portuguese, use the British to kick out the Dutch, until the British swallowed us whole). Therefore, we cannot rely solely on diplomacy; our continued existence as a people and a nation depends on it.

Well, this was to correct our own stupidity. We had the intelligence when LTTE was handful and never took it seriously to take care of them.
Our corrupt politics armed and empowered LTTE. Who helped them get all their heavy equipments and airplanes? I am sure some of them came through corrupt SL customs.
If we take care of LTTE, and create a good government, our army should only be good enough for ceremonial just like it used to be. There is no way we can protect against India if they choose to invade us. I don't think it will happen in my wildest dreams. The world is loosing interest in armed conflicts.

Well, if you are convinced of your own views, there is no hope of changing them, so let us agree to disagree.
Regarding India being so big that we can't do anything to dissuade them, look at the following counter examples:
1. Israel opposes the entire Arab world and survives.
2. Taiwan defends its existence against China, and survives.
3. Cuba holds the the USA at bay, and survives
4. Switzerland mobilizes its entire population in 1 week and refuses passage to Hitler's army in the invasion of France, and remains neutral during WW-II
5. Britain fended off the Nazis after Dunkirk, primarily by having the best Navy and the first Radar controlled air defense system until the US joined in, and survived.
All of these countries did it largely through self reliance.
Finally, it may not be India that will invade, but a newly independent country called Tamil Nadu, 80 million strong. Are we going just hope it won't happen and wait, or are we going to be so well prepared militarily that they won't even try?

Whoever we call ‘keyboard’ terrorists or whatever, do not carry guns and bombs and come to your house to blow you up. They maybe misguided souls who have in most instances believed what they have been told by their elders/parents, and as all kids do, they believe in the authoritative figures in their lives, just like my kids believe in me and I believed in my parents.
As a Sinhalese Buddhist, I worship my parents before I leave the home, even after returning from University in the UK and being in that country for almost 14 years, I still came home and gave my parents the love and respect I felt was necessary. Just due to the traditions we kept within the family for centuries.
I also hug my mum and dad whenever I see them. The bowing to them is only a form of respect. I even give my friends parents the same respect. Unlike in the west, we still call our friends parents; aunty and uncle.
This mans insults to peoples parents I really cannot take. I’m very sorry about that, maybe my values are silly, but that’s how I feel.

It feels like the army underestimated the level of resistance in EP. They would have withdrawn the artillery but somehow fighting without it. Vezha probably ordered a fight to death in EP as well. He has a reputation to protect.

do u remember in th 16th of dec when 55,53 tried to advance in killali it was reported that about 30 SLA deaths were exclusively because of enemy mortar fire.. i think that before TF1 cuts off the bottleneck 100% and the chundikulam route is also blocked 53 and 55 should stand ground and keep on the pressure with active defences..

My recommendation is for TF1 to avoid prepared defences at EPS, and outflank EPS and cut-off supplies and reinforcements to EPS and N-M-K front by first moving East along A35 and then moving Northeast to the Kilaly Lagoon and interdicting road through the Chundikulam isthmus with Artillery.
This is my guess of what the SLA would do.

Yes, they are building a fortification, as I expected them to be doing. However,
1. TF1 would need to be reinforced with more troops (from TF5?) to protect its southern flank
2. The turn Northeast to the Lagoon would come before moving 10km East along A35 and confronting the earthbund is reached.
As an aside, I hope the SLAF is bombing the earthmoving equipment and crew building that earthbund, intensively!
LTTPussies dont have enough troops to hold onto both mahamalai/EPS and mullaitivu. since we have mullaitivu virtually surrounded, if SLA attack there, some LTTPussies would need to be transfered by sea from puthu'ruppu and mahamalai to mullaitivu to face the music. then EPS/Muhamalai would be much easier. anyway that's my take on things.

Considering DefenceWire analysis and you guys comments I think there are few advantages and disadvantages of this move.
Now at the moment only one brigade of TF1 is holding the Southern FDL of EPS. So There could be close to 2000 troops. As I remember terra had close to 2000 cadres before SLA conquered Paranthan junction. As we all know EPS is a open terrain difficult area to conduct offensive operation. So I think SLA wanted them to withdraw their cadres and happy to play the waiting game. As I predicted if they had attacked EPS FDL, even Paranthan Junction could be vulnerable, which SLA can't afford at this time. So SLA is happy to play the waiting game and take the advantage of cut of supply route which eventually decrease their cadre strength (Strategic Withdrawals :)). Which reminds me what had happened during Nachchikuda operation.
Considering all the facts I think the reason DefenceWire has given for holding the fight is not relevant (There could be to a certain extent, but surely not the main reason).
By the way guys I had a chance to travel EPS during ceasefire agreement period and I saw the Bulldozer where Hasalaka Gamini sacrificed his precious life. I felt so sad by looking at it, because I thought his sacrifices were all in vain. But fortunately is not.

The Elephant Pass is known as the Gateway to Jaffna. It is a thin strip of land with sea on either side.
