Final stage of the war...

Injuries are reported to the LTTE's head of Intelligence Poddu Amman and head of Internal Secret Intelligence Kapil Amman in two air strikes at Puthukudirippu. Both men have received minor injuries but have been shocked by the accuracy of the attack, escaped LTTE Intelligence Wing cadres have told the Army.

Meanwhile LTTE Leader Velupillai Prabhakaran's son has also been injured in his shoulder after he joined 600 others in penetrating the 58 FDL several weeks ago. Fighting in the last stretch of the A-35 has intensified in an area covered in coconut trees and other vegetation. LTTE is firing heavy volumes of 130mm canons, a weapon thought to have been abandoned by the Tigers.

The flow of civilians to government areas has again increased with 6-7000 within a 7-day period with 2000 returning today alone.

The 55 Division, particularly the Mechanized Infantry Division, launched a devastating attack on a cluster of LTTE boats using Baktarshikan/Red Arrow missiles and 30mm canons killing over two dozen Sea Tigers off the coast of Chalai. The cluster of boats had earlier driven away a small RABS unit of the Navy which attempted to engage them at sea.

Meanwhile a popular TV personality reporting on the war for a national TV channel has been apprehended on a tip-off with a haul of electronic goods stolen from an LTTE compound by the Medawachchiya Police. An Army Liaisons Officer appointed to him is now in the Army Cell awaiting court martial. The TV personality, however, will get away with it scott free.

  7. Army needs to publicize rules on war booty so all soldiers know that its illegal to take these types of things. Too bad for the TV reporter. He is one of the best we have, and perhaps he was not aware that he was breaking any law by taking abandoned electronic equipment. However, the army officer should have known better.

Who knows if the vehicle stayed parked for 30 minutes why the airplanes flew in.
    ------------------------------

Yup, the tractor parked at 10:58 and then the UAV stopped recording the footage.

    Meanwhile the tractor slipped away.

The Jet comes at 11:30 and the UAV starts recording again and the bomb is dropped at the place where the tractor parked previously.

Badri, thanks to your brilliant analysis, the SLAF will learn from its mistakes and in the future keep the UAV cameras rolling even after tractors park under trees, so that the pilots will know where to bomb exactly :)

It is very interesting that you comment on the report about the laptops. What has it got to do with defence. That is a criminal activity and why do you have to talk about criminal activities? No one should hide the fact about this kind of stuff, but I have to wonder what a defence column writer has got to do about writing about this kind of stuff. Are they related? If so I can't see the relationship?

S Lanka Govt. over rules international pressure for ceasefire with LTTE

    Mar 31

Rejecting international community's call for a ceasefire with the LTTE, the Sri Lankan government has said this would only help the rebels recover from the effects of the conflict and will prolong the 25-year-old war. Foreign Secretary Palitha Kohona said this in Colombo today.
Kohona said the Tigers have consistently ignored the government's appeals for letting the Tamil civilians trapped in the war zone leave for safer areas, thereby demonstrating again and again the utter and callous disregard paid by LTTE to the very people they claim to represent.

    'Civilians killed' in Sri Lanka
    By Anbarasan Ethirajan
    BBC News, Colombo

The government says that troops are withdrawing from civilian camps
At least 30 civilians have been killed in heavy fighting over the last two days in north-east Sri Lanka, health officials say.

They say that the lines of the two warring sides are now too close to the last major health facility in the area.

The military has strongly denied being responsible for the casualties, in which about 160 people were injured.

Tamil Tiger rebels meanwhile have welcomed calls for an immediate ceasefire to allow aid for civilians.

A statement from their political wing called upon the government "to bring an immediate end to the shelling that is killing Tamil civilians in their thousands, day by day... and which amounts to genocide".

    See map of the region

But President Mahinda Rajapaksa insisted there would be no let-up in the military offensive to crush the rebels - despite a government announcement on Monday that it was considering a humanitarian pause.

"We will not cave into pressures from any international quarters locally and internationally and will not stop until the war is completely over," Mr Rajapaksa said in a statement on the military's web site.

The rebels are now cornered in a small patch of jungle, lagoon and coastal area in Mullaitivu district - the army says that they are now confined to an area of less than 25 sq km (15.5 sq miles).

It is estimated that between 40,000 and 150,000 civilians are trapped in the conflict zone in the north-east and aid agencies have expressed concern over their safety and security.

The military is under pressure to call a temporary halt to the fighting

Meanwhile, a senior health official working inside Tamil Tiger-held areas in Mullaitivu district has told the BBC by telephone from a makeshift health facility that shells continued to fall inside the safe zone set up to protect civilians.

"More than 30 civilians have succumbed to their injuries since Monday morning," he said.

He did not say who was responsible for the shelling. But he said they could now see the defence lines of both the warring sides not far away.

There is no confirmation of these estimates, because independent journalists are banned by the government from travelling to the war-affected areas.

However, the military has denied responsibility for civilian deaths.

The government on Tuesday announced that it was withdrawing troops from camps for thousands of civilians who have escaped the civil war. It said that these camps would now be run by "civil servants".

The United Nations says that more than 2,600 may have been killed and 7,000 injured in fighting in the last two months. But the government disputes these figures.

The UN has also accused the rebels of preventing the civilians from leaving the war zone, saying there were credible reports that Tamil Tigers were shooting at those attempting to flee.

This is how a bunch of loosers will drown their sorrow and expresses their anger via blogging. Their sarcasm is anger disguised as humour towards a winner and has no positive intent.

As the war draws to an end, apart from playing its conventional role of being a defense news related medium Defencewire is also becoming a place where heartbroken eelamists can come to take pot shots at anti LTTE bloggers. This pot shot taking is in fact the only way they could release a whole lot of stress and despair.

Therefore DW continues its community service, serving patriots and villains alike!

Christian Human Rights activist arrested at Katunayake
Mr. Santha Fernando (63) Executive Secretary Commission for Justice and Peace –National Christian Conference ( former Secretary APAY, member of IDC , APRRN and NCC Sri Lanka National Board member National YMCA) has been taken in to Custody at Colombo International Air Port on 27th march 2009. He was handed over by Terrorist Investigation Division (TID) of Sri Lanka. Mr. Fernando has served as the secretary of CJP-NCC SL for four years.

He was arrested after airport security found some documents related to conflict in Sri Lanka in his hand luggage. According to unconfirmed reports documents he had in his possession were on humanitarian crisis in Vanni, downloaded form the internet. He was on his way to attend a two day workshop organized by Delhi based The Other Media group on Sri Lanka situation.

The work shop was held on 28/29th in Delhi. Santha’s Wife was asked to come to the police section where he is held. A lawyer who visited the police section was informed him that they will let him know by two or three days time where they will allow lawyers to visit him. They only allowed family members to visit him. Upto now no lawyer has been allowed to visit him.

A lawyer has contacted the Director of the unit and raised concerns over his age and health and they informed the lawyer that he is well looked after.

It is understood that Ministry for Defence (MOD) has issued a detention order for 30 days to keep Mr. Santha Fernando in the TID.

  149. Sri Lankan Government and the Security Forces have been extra careful to avoid any civilian casualties. The LTTE and its sympathizers have tried in vain to paint a picture of a massive 'humanitarian catastrophe' or even genocide, but they have not been able to convince the international community.
If there is any genocide in Sri Lanka it is by the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) who hold civilian Tamils by force as a human shield in the war. This talk about genocide by Tamil Diaspora is rubbish. The only people who are causing genocide are the LTTE who are holding the civilians as a human shield. Tamil speaking civilians who are being held against their will as a human shield in the current war by the LTTE and who are being shot at by the LTTE when they attempt to escape on foot and by boat.
The vast majority of Tamils living in Sri Lanka do not want a two state solution. It was evident all along that the LTTE leader Prabhakaran was not interested in a political solution to the issues in Sri Lanka and the Tamil speaking Sri Lankans, but in establishing a personal fiefdom for himself
LTTE killed more Tamil speaking SriLankans than any body else. Also more LTTE members were killed by Pirabhakaran than any body else.
The LTTE's tyranny did not permit any alternative voices to emerge, but the establishment of democratic structures will enable the people to elect their own representatives to manage local affairs.

Asked if the government should support the LTTE in Sri Lanka, 66 percent respondents said yes, the NDTV said in a release Tuesday, revealing the findings of the opinion survey.

On the political front, the survey showed that Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi of DMK and Leader of Opposition J. Jayalalitha of AIADMK are in a neck-to-neck race to be the next chief minister, with 41 percent and 40 percent respondents backing them respectively.

The poll was part of an all-India, state-wise NDTV-GFK Mode poll to understand the key concerns of the voters.

The venture seemed doomed to failure anyway. Today I tried looting bras in the war zone. These girls are very uncooperative. They all slapped me. One 'girl' turned out to be an LTTE colonel. I just managed to run away in time.

India PM’s special envoy visits Colombo, tells Rajapaksa to go for ‘credible devolution’ quickly
    Tue, 2009-03-31 11:26
By M Rama Rao, India Editor, Asian Tribune

New Delhi, 31 March, (Asiantribune.com): With an eye on the vote banks in Tamil Nadu, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh deputed his principal secretary TKA Nair as special envoy to Colombo with the message that credible devolution should be done quickly.

Nair was in the Sri Lankan capital on March 25 and 26. Besides the President Mahinda Rajapaksa he had met a host of senior government leaders. He also found some time to go to Anuradhapura to see local Buddhist temples.

Principal Secretary to the Prime Minister of India Mr.Shri T.K.A Nair received by Sri Lanka President Mahinda Rajapaksa in Colombo
The visit was all a hush-hush affair with both Delhi and Colombo keeping the visit a very low profile one far removed from the media gaze. In fact, officials of the Sri Lanka foreign ministry described Nair’s visit as a social visit at the invitation of Lalith Weeratunga, Secretary to the President of Sri Lanka. Some sections have even billed the visit as exchange of views on "developments in the field of public administration in the two countries."

Foreign Secretary Shiv Shankar Menon, who met reporters Monday, confirmed the visit saying "With military operation against LTTE appearing to near an end, India has asked Sri Lanka to take steps towards ‘credible devolution’ of powers to Tamil-dominated northern region".

He added that Nair in his talks with Sri Lankan officials stressed the need for taking steps which can be 'seen as the key step in meeting the needs of all minority communities, especially the Tamil community'.

India believes that political package to the minority Tamil community is the ultimate solution to the ethnic conflict, the Indian Foreign Secretary said.

PM’s emissary’s discussions also focused on ways by which India can help Sri Lanka in reconstruction and rehabilitation of the northern region, which is being freed from the control of LTTE.

    Karunanidhi In The Loop

Tamil Nadu chief minister M Karunanidhi appears to have been taken into confidence before mounting the Nair mission to Colombo.

According to some sources, the visit was a carefully calibrated exercise after hurried consultations between the Congress and the DMK seniors, who are worried about the SL factor in TN politics on the eve of Lok Sabha elections. The DMK and the Congress are finding the going tough with AIADMK lining up a near formidable combination after the PMK switched its loyalties from DMK to Jayalalithaa camp.

In a significant statement, Karunanidhi tried to silence his critics over the SL issue. In a chat with reporters in Chennai, he said the DMK would welcome creation of separate state for Tamils in the Island nation.

'We will be glad if a separate Eelam (state) is created (in the Island nation) by people voting for it', he is quoted as saying.

Karunanidhi added that attempts of some opposition parties in Tamil Nadu to paint the UPA government at the Centre and the DMK government in the state as anti-Sri Lankan Tamils would 'not succeed'.

The opposition parties, he remarked, are trying to create an illusion among the public that 'my party is against Sri Lankan Tamils' but the effort will not succeed.

    High Alert In Kerala Coast

Kerala police Monday sounded a high alert cross the state amidst reports that a group of suspected LTTE militants have sneaked in. Police, Navy and Coastguard have launched a joint intense search between Alappuzha and Kochi towns.

Intelligence sleuths are speaking of the possibility of a militant group landing in Thyckal Beach near Cherthala, about 30 km South of Kochi.

Security all along the busy Cherthala-Kochi highway has been beefed up. While police and armed commandos are deployed on the road side, the Navy has mounted aerial surveillance and the Coast Guard boats are searching the off-shore areas.

Kerala Home Minister Kodiyeri Balakrishnan said all possible routes through which the suspected militant group could move had been put under high vigil.

Unlike despora you see in this blog, we should know to tell the good from the bad. The fact is tamils didnt have the balls to say no to VP when needed, now because of that, they are normads living in other poeples contries.
