Every Cloud Has a Silver Lining?

Altogether 23 aircraft have been lost in the attack on the Anuradhapura Airbase. The most valuable craft lost included the Beechcraft, two brand-new UAVs and one highly sophisticated UAV with thermal glare detection capability. The LTTE has thus completely annihilated the aerial reconnaissance capability of the Armed Forces.

The 20 member team had entered the base by cutting a portion of the wire fence. Military Intelligence (SLA) piecing together the attack believe at least a small recce team had done primary intelligence -gathering many days prior to the attack. They were well aware of the entry/exit points of the base, the location of the UAV and Beech King hangars and also the absence of the Air Force Regimental Special Forces at the base.

The Black Tiger unit, considered the most lethal force in the LTTE next to the Black Sea Tigers, had little problem in countering SLAF units that challenged them. In fact, SLAF units were unable to trace the Black Tigers and launch effective counter attacks. Although the group was a potential 'write off' for the LTTE considering they were a suicide unit, the Tigers were preparing for a total takeover of the base. After destroying the aircraft in the base the Black Tigers turned to hoisting Tamil Ealam Flags inside the SLAF base. However, the fortunes of the Tiger unit soon began to change.

A 40-man elite team of Special Forces was on their way from Vavuniya. The unit, a part of a much larger Special Forces operation ahead of the Vavuniya FDL, was successfully engaging the LTTE's other elite units, including the Charles Anthony Regiment when Military Planners withdrew them from their original task. Led by a Special Forces Major from the 2nd Special Forces Brigade, the unit was knowledgeable of the Base inside-out, having previously trained in airborne operations from the base. The SF team was a highly capable fighting formation. Within minutes of being airborne, the unit started battle preparations. Arriving in two waves, the unit went into immediate action. They were capable of locating and completely annihilating the Black Tiger unit within a matter of few hours. Suicide cadres or not, the Black Tigers were no match for the powerful Special Forces. Their 'handiwork', captured in gruesome images, are available on defence.lk and is perhaps the only success story in this whole debacle.

The Sri Lanka Air Force base at Anuradhapura may have been the country's most ill-prepared military base. Army intelligence units now tasked with investigating the debacle claim the base had no contingency plan or proper security-drills or rehearsals done prior to the attack. The attack is the result of negligence, improper orientation, inadequate training and a lack of alertness on the part of the men. A severe leadership problem, lack of experience but luxurious and self-indulgent lifestyles are observed as the main weaknesses on the part of the Officers at the base. A close observation between the Sri Lanka Air Force and the other two main Armed Forces reveals serious institutional failures in the SLAF which seems to operate like a nine-to-five private firm more than an Armed Force fighting a ruthless guerrilla organization.

By thinking of this, my home is better protected than the airbase.

Someone asked what aircraft lost.
one Beechcraft, two MI-17 helicopters, two MI-24 helicopters, three functional unmanned aerial vehicles, a K-8 jet, one Bell 212, eight PD6 single-rotor aircraft. This makes it a grand total of eighteen. We just got fresh confirmation that another 5 repairable UAVs have also been lost.

Do we have any UAVs now at all? Or have they ALL been destroyed in this attack?

illegal.existance:

This is what I said in the prior posting. But, you asked me to th stfu. Are you going to say the same to Defencewire?

Let me say again. Base commander and others who are responsible for this debacle must be held responsible. This is not just losing aircrafts and men. This has the potential to reverse the gains of this war. This is a huge morale booster to terrorists and their fun collectors. We should not undersestimate.

Thank god we have SF regiment. Otherwise tigers flag would be flying high. Perhaps the black tigers didnt know how to pilot those chopper. Or they overestimated the security of the base by first destroying the choppers. Just imagine LTTE getting hold of those attack choppers.

Eitherway, there is one thing left to do. That is to hit LTTE hard to dent their morale. No point in bombing iranamadu. We should take those tincans when they are airborne. Let's hope our miltary planners are working hard as we speak.

defencewire,

I appreciate your candid reporting style. However, you seem to be revealing the facts that should be guarded. Please take extreme care in revealing the losses.

Damn!!! That bad.

sam,
If LTTE can get information from A'pura base to attack it, if their team was in radio-communication with their main base till 9am from 3.10am, during which time they had completely destroyed the aircraft and drones, they will definitely know the facts that I'm talking about. Admittedly, they knew more than me or the entire defence establishment long before.

Does anyone want us to hide facts already known? We will become you-know-what's mouthpiece then.

23 now!! a field day

bloody hell.

Sam Perera said...

Defencewire,

It is not the count that matters but the count out of total available to the forces and whether others are not functional.

Defencewire said...

sam,
Unfortunately LTTE has ways of finding these things out. The attack itself demonstrates how much they knew where to strike, when and what to destroy. Maybe its good to give them large losses on our side and surprise them. Isn't that what happened to us?

DefenceWire and DefenceAnalyst.... Please do keep up the great reporting that you guys are doing now.
We have enough and more mouthpieces hoodwinking the public...
we want to know the bitter truth and not fancy BS...
When we know the truth and we know our mistakes...chances are we can fix it

Defncewire,
I that you are aware of the consequences of forgetting the fact that this is a public forum.

Oh c'mon Sam :)
you think ltte doesn't know what happened?
Probably they might have not know that we have lost all our UAV's which is a huge loss to us but most other details ltte knew...
and you can't gauge what ltte knows through tamilnet etc...
It's only through these blogs that we get to know what government is hiding.. officially still the beech is not lost... what a joke...

Know the problems, admit failures, come up with a solution and let's move on...

And someone was asking to take the SF soldiers pic out... I've seen this SF trooper many times on printed media...he's almost a visual icon now :)

Sam... chances are all he authors of this blog are SLDF folks with lotsa knowledge and passion behind our forces... i'm sure they know what they are doing here :)

Let me share some experience from one of my friend. When he came back to the ANP camp around 2.00am the military police guy at the gate was sleeping. He stole his cap and gave it to the gaurd commander the next day.
In palaly not long ago when my friend was returning again around 2.00am no body was at the first gate. Head lights wre blinked, honked no response. Then his guards had to go in and shake the sentry to wake him up. I know lot of people won't believe this, but this was very true. I am not blaming the ordinary foot soldier. It is the command.

Hey,DEFENCEWIRE..keep up the great blog!! awesome.i especially like the detailed analysis..thanks for the aircraft loss count.Seems like the government is slow in even counting their losses, just like they are in anticipating tiger activities.

C'mon sam perers, this is the era of globalisation & information is deliverd almost at the wink of an eye..if the tigers want detailed info, they have a wide network of spies within the forces, plus they can subscribe to google earth or some other satellite feed service & obtain detailed views on anuradhapura AB & its environs.

However, exceptions are obviously any planned & forthcoming operations & tactics, troop maneuvers which should not be disclosed. After the operation has been successfully completed or almost completed, then we would like to know the Finer details,

DEFENCEWIRE,can u confirm that our total UAV fleet comprised of 8 IAI SEARCHER-2 UAV'S & the the older IAI SCOUT UAV'S?

cheers!!

sam,
I understand your concerns fully. What we report is now the past. We are not reporting on the counter measures. This is where the sensitivities are now. We will not discuss those in this forum. We just want the people to know what happened, not what is happening or will happen, in terms of military preparations on our side. We have never revealed those and never will.

The SF officer in the pic is a Captain. LTTE will not go after individuals, unless they individually pose significant military or political threat.

Defencewire,

I have some undersanding of your position. In any case, I don't want hear what I need not to hear. You know what I mean. Lets move on.

Sam,
Agreed! Thank you for being so frank. I like that.

In what is widely termed the information age, totalitarianism is best countered through the online revolution. In this respect, the SL blogosphere has been both a revelation and an inspiration to the public.

One needs to note that a climate of war often offers a great excuse for more suppression. This is not unique to SL. Political point-scoring under the guise of national security is often witnessed and SL is in danger of an increase in the trend.

Defencewire has filled a vacuum for defence-related information in the public domain. Congratulations to all you guys who operate this site. More strength to you to carry this forward. We need this.
