Security in Colombo has been beefed up following fresh intelligence warnings. Snap roadblocks, cordon and search operations and other measures have been taken by the Security Forces and Police. A police officer on duty at the Colombo Harbour allegedly gathering information for the LTTE has been gunned down by two unidentified men on a motorcycle. Security officials said they were in no way responsible for any delays caused to civilians due to the new security measures.
Meanwhile Human Rights Watch has requested the British government to try former LTTE Commander Karuna Amman (Vinayagamoorthy Muralitharan) for war crimes. Human Rights Watch accused Amman of attacks on humanitarian workers and forcible recruitment of child soldiers. Karuna was arrested last Friday in a joint operation by British Immigration Officers and British Police for holding a forged passport bearing a Sinhalese name.
Former Karuna's aid and the chief Financial Officer of the Thamil Makkal Viduthalai Pulikal, Sinnathambi has been injured in a grenade attack at Navaladi Batticaloa. One of his aids traveling in the same van was killed. Altogether six cadres from the party, including Sinnathamby have been admitted to the Polonnaruwa Hospital. Two critically wounded cadres out of the six admitted were later transferred to Colombo Hospital's Emergency Ward. The body of the dead cadre has been taken away by the TMVP.

The instruments on HISAR can locate targets on land from 30,000 ft above. The thermal imaging will highlight heated barrels of mortar and artillery that is the biggest obstacle to troops in West of Mannar. Why hasn't these being taken out already? Perhaps someone could clear this for me.

panhinda, they only fire short bursts I believe, especially with the heavy artillery, so even if detected by the time a strike package gets there they are alrady gone.
Mortars are even more mobile which is why they can use them more frequently than the heavy guns, so they can relocate and keep up the fire or move at short notice.
Here is a scenario..
While these ships are at high seas, LTTE use rubber dingies and climb onto a ship/ships that come to berth at the Colombo Harbour. They hide inside the ships until they berth at the harbour and then launch an attack combined with another form (i.e land) of attack or two.

Still the HISAR could hover at high altitude when the troops move forward reporting the location of enemy guns in real time. The MBBRL should be able to target at least 1/4 of an acre block. Therefore even moving target should not be much of an issue. Some coordination between the troops, HISAR and the MBBRL is all that is required.
I beleive that forward-deployment of fighter jets at anuradhapura or even china bay should be implemented quickly..however,understandably & obviously,these bases must be heavily guarded & secure..in other words,a sri lankan version of AREA-51 as in the US should be followed!!
The basing of jets at anuradhapura should enable faster turnaround & shorter response times to battles in the north-east theatre..increased sorties could be flown,along with a bigger warload.this should enable the Kfirs's,especially to carry more bombs,rather than waste space by carrying fuel tanks,to increase their range..The Floggers do not have this problem,as they already carry a big warload,& can take-of from a short distance..easier to maintain,in comparison to kfirs,as well..The F-7(chinese mig-21 copy),should be phased out,cause they cause more trouble than its worth..we should go for a squadron of SU-25 Frogfoot's which are the soviet answer to the american A-10 Thunderbolt,an ugly-looking,but brutish & effective ground-attack aircraft..

I don't think we should phase out the Kfirs just yet, they still hae a lot of juice in them.
I do think its high time to replace the aging 4 F-7 jets with 4 F-7G jets.
goldeneagle,i was referring to the F-7's to be phased out,not the Kfir's..We could go for the Kfir C-7/C-10 versions,which are upgraded,compared to the older C-2 versionse that we operate..
By the way,just curious to find out if the TC2 trainer versions of Kfir are used in combat? & IF SO, DO BOTH pilots fly the aircraft?

We still have a system with Forward Looking Infrared that can track arti. HISAR is much more sophisticated with multi mission radar and long range sensors. The problem is LTTE moved their arti from place to place. This will probably change during longer confrontations. Right now its not the best time for us to hit such targets.
