Commander tours Yala

Army Commander Lt. General Sarath Fonseka toured Yala today. This was the Commander's first visit after transferring Yala Area Commander Brig. Sudantha Ranasinghe and replacing him with a Colonel.

Meanwhile the SLA handed over 14 bodies to ICRC at Anuradhapura today. The bodies included the remains of 7 Tigers killed at Weli Oya on 25th evening. They were then handed over to LTTE at Omanthai.

Unrelated to defence exactly, but there's a Question and Answer section with Somawansa Amarasinghe in the Daily Mirror. Among the questions

Q. Mr.Amarasinghe, a lot of people are curious as to how the JVP would go about settling the issues of the Tamil people once and for all. I'm not referring to the LTTE, but what your plans are after they have been militarily defeated. Your late leader Wijeweera advocated devolving power to Tamils in the north and east, but your party has opposed all recent moves to devolve power to the Tamil people. What process would you support to finally settle this conflict?

A. Dear Mr. Rishan I am afraid I have to point out that you are making false statements regarding Comrade Rohana Wijeweera. Comrade Wijeweera never advocated devolution of power. He stood by decentralization of administration. Please read his thesis on the National Question in Sri Lanka. Comrade Wijeweera elaborates there the solution for the National Question in Sri Lanka. If you wish, you could come to our office and we can give you a copy. We will very soon publish the road map to achieve that solution. Please wait for another few days.

Typical JVP, blaming everyone, including the person who asked the question, but absolutely no solutions to the country's problems. "Please wait another few days" is all he's got to say to the biggest problem the country is facing. It's just sad there a people stupid enough to still support them.

"settling the issues of the Tamil people once and for all"

COMPLETE BULLSHIT.

If we look at the problem RACIALLY, this can NEVER be solved. Then,
- how about settling the issues of the Sinhala people?
- how about settling the issues of the Sinhala people?
- how about settling the issues of the Muslim people?
- how about settling the issues of the Malay people?
- how about settling the issues of the Burger people?
- how about settling the issues of the Veddha people?
- how about settling the issues of the upcountry tamil people?
- how about settling the issues of the Christian people?
- how about settling the issues of the Buddhist people?
- how about settling the issues of the Hindu people?

etc., etc. this is a BOTTOMLESS PIT.
if anyone thinks taking up arms JUSTIFIES his problems over others' problems he is a real idiot.

Instead a SRI LANKAN view must be taken.
How can the problems faced by SL be solved FOR THE BETTERMENT OF SL?

This is the right question.

The JVP terrorists are ONLY interested in addressing the issues of their voters (jobless, trade unionist sinhalese mainly). similarly UNP & TNA are ONLY interested in satisfying the LTTE. the govt. may also be interested in PRIMARILY addressing the issues of their voters.

This is utter stupidity.

the problem must be solved with SL at heart; some may certainly disagree (as SL has more than 30 disagreeing political parties!!!). there is no point trying to satisfy them.

it is like an election; losers NEVER accept defeat.

Had SOUTH AFRICA solved ONLY the problems of the BLACKS, it would be a YUGOSLAVIA today.

Hey Smart Moshe Dyan, as you are the only Genious, tell us a solution, come up with something that would fix all.. or read this:

Better to be good neighbours than perish as one family

Born and brought up in Colombo, I was a proud Sri Lankan. Royal College taught me respect, tolerance and friendship. I was always the first to be called to the stage to sing our national anthem on any occasion. Yes, I was a proud Sri Lankan who never wanted to leave the paradise on Earth. I had dreams of making my country one of the best in the world. Better than Singapore. Most of my best friends were Sinhalese (I still value and maintain their friendship).

Even though I had terrible experiences in school due to my ethnicity, I was taught to tolerate as I was taught that the bad people belonged to all communities. When I was assaulted by two students in school for racial reasons my Vice Principal Mr. Gunasekara gave the healing touch. I never understood why people behaved like that. I also never understood why one of my dear friends was arrested. He came back with a broken bone and a permanent psychological scar for doing no wrong but being a Tamil.

1983 communal riots shattered all hopes in me. By the way, the word communal riots means two communities fighting with each other. But what happened in 1983 was not that. Innocent Tamils were butchered by organised gangs with the government watching the act. Instead of giving a healing touch, the government tried to justify and cover-up everything. My house was burnt, my dear friends killed, entire families wiped out and I was kicked out of the country as a refugee.

Now I am in Canada — a respected citizen of this country, which only looks at you as a fellow human being. I am proud to work for this great nation, for its development. Who cares whether you are a Tamil, Sinhalese, Muslim, Italian, white, black or any other damn thing. You are respected for the talents and hard work you put in.

I do not say that this is the perfect world but people here seem to have learned the lessons and the bitter truth of what racism could do to a country from places like Sri Lanka. Who is the loser? Definitely Sri Lanka. It has lost its former faithful citizens both Tamils and Sinhalese to many countries in the world.

I still love Sri Lanka. I still maintain great friendship with my Sinhalese brothers who share my thoughts. When two brothers in the family cannot live together and there is irreparable damage done by poisoning of innocent hearts permanently, with stupid history tellers of Dutugemunu, why not we live as good neighbours? It is time to part rather than live in misery as one family and kill each other.

Live and let live as neighbours of two countries than perish as one.

DefenceWire,

How far are we off from fully mobilizing the 61st division? I hope that 61st will be there between 59th and 57th division at the front!

Defencewire said...

its too late Dyan, both sides have lost so many... if it will, there will be more losses to SL as a whole than just Tamils.

When I left $1 US was 30/= now, its almost 110/= .... are we waiting for it to get 1100/=? who is it affecting?

DW

Why SLA raise 61 division without making that task force a division. It was said it remains a task force as not enough numbers to be a division. And as I know there are technical issues like promotion, salaries etc between a division and task force.

Moshey

You are not arguing with atleast a SL citizen.

Defencewire said...

ninja,
A task force is a much large concept than a Division. Task force I for example comprises of 3 Divisions currently, each with 3 Brigades and each brigade with around 5-10 avenues of approaches. The Task Force one is operating in several mobility corridors.
