BREAKING NEWS: Balraj no more

Balraj at the launch of a book on Charles Anthony Unit

In what is seen as a severe blow to an organization already handicapped by aging and ailing guerrilla leaders, the LTTE's military wing leader and one of the senior most leaders of the LTTE 'Colonel' Balraj has passed away this afternoon, LTTE sources revealed.

Balraj had passed away due to natural causes, pro-LTTE sources have claimed. He was last stationed in the Vanni defences to halt marauding SLA units from breaking entry into LTTE-held Kilinochchi and Mullaithivu.

He had been under increasing pressure over the last few months as the SLA stepped up operations in Mannar, Vavuniya and Weli Oya. The pressure was on to demonstrate the once formidable strength of the LTTE in this sector, but successes came only in small measures.

Balraj was also the first commander of the Charles Anthony infantry unit, the first semi-conventional fighting force of the Tigers. He was accredited with the sea-borne landing at Kudarippu (and cutting off the A9) that paved the way for the fall of the Elephant Pass Garrison of the SLA in 2000.

Balraj, a former PLOTE cadre is originally from Puthukudiirippu and was a close associate of Mahendrarajah alias Mahaththaya. He joined LTTE after Mahaththaya's murder and won Prabhakaran's confidence and was later appointed 'Special Commander' for the Vanni to prevent LRRP operations against the Tiger leadership.

Balraj's demise comes at a particularly bad time for the Tigers. In recent months, Military Intelligence had confirmed that Balraj was receiving treatment for a cardiac ailment. He had obtained treatment at an Indian hospital at Narahenpita during the Cease-Fire Agreement with approval of the then Sri Lanka government. Balraj was once severely wounded in battle and one of his legs was almost amputated.

The reality is that Balraj and other leaders, including Prabhakaran, are nearing their shelf-life and have begun to ail as they get older and come under increasing pressure from the Sri Lankan military that has limited their freedom of movement. Balraj's last successful operation was at Elephant Pass 8 years ago. A number of his deputies of 'Lt. Col' rank have been wiped out by the SLA since then.

Tiger leaders trapped in parts of the Mullaithivu and Kilinochchi Districts live under constant fear of aerial raids and LRRP operations. They are also under tremendous time-pressure to deliver on their promise of Tamil Eelam before they die.

I salute you for sacrificing your time in this righteous war.

VP may have another 5 to 10 years of lifespan. Given his physical shape, 5'2 with 180+ lbs, the 5 to 10 years span is even generous for him.

Poddu will be good replacement for VP, I'm not sure how much his charisma will attract the Tamil youth in this struggle. Poddu is unsung hero in this struggle, all the Tamils should recognize him as next Great man emerging.

While reading the 'Human Smoke' which came out recently I was surprised to learn how desparately the English stocked up Chemicals [mustard gas etc] for rataliation if needed.

I have a feeling that LTTE would not have any hesitation of using somethng like that if they could get their hands on.They should definitly have some sort of a trump card up their sleeves the way they allow SLDF to come forward.

I wonder whether our boys are ready just in case.

Balaraj is the man who boasted that the Eelam War IV has already begun as low intensity war during the time of Ranil "Bend-Over" Wickramasinghe's time. Perhaps, him and his boss miscalculated that the will of the regular Sri Lankan to resisit LTTE is no more that Ranl's. May be, the emotional suffering of seeing LTTE loosing every day triggered he heart attack. The other possibility is that Velu has started killing incompetent commanders like Hitler killed his own. The other possibility is that Velu just killed him under suspicion that Balaraj was cooperating with SLA or RAW. Only time will reveal what really went on.

Hopefully, Velu will get rid of other looser commanders like Swarnam, Soosai, and Poddu also.

For many years tamil and sinhala moderates and intelligensia wanted a solution within which both communities could live in peace. But the extremists eventually won the day, not only beating every argument we brought forward, the eye-for-an-eye proved to be unbeatable. As a one time believer in moderate politics, 'negotiated peace' I am perturbed to have been proven so badly wrong.
Long ago I listened to a southern hardliner explain why it was important to allow the tamil terror movements to grow, so that eventual decimation will wipe it off as a threat to the 'sinhala civilization'. He forecasted that the third round of tamil-sinhala conflict in historical terms as the point of either complete victory or annihilation for the 'sinhala nation'. These same people are silently celebrating today as the tamil extremists hold sway and fight their way into gradual extinction. And a lot of moderates of the past are starting to see along the same line.

THere may be an eventual victory for the 'sinhalese' as the SLA wipes out the LTTE. But as a nation we are losing our soul and few will be there to mourn its passing. For a long time we've clung to the convenient excuse of having tamil extremism to blame it all on. But if we fail to safe-guard Pillian led eastern tamil political movement as it takes baby-steps towards becoming an inclusive political force, we as a nation will stand to lose greatly and will continue to bleed from many wounds for far too long. The far-sighted Sri Lankans need to allow Pilliyan (or who-ever) becomes a moderate tamil leader that espouses moderate politics to grow into political maturity. they need to be guarded from both tyrants, the vicious LTTE and the scheming southern sinhalse chauvanists.

You raise an interesting point. In fact the MI has been in contact with some of the middle to higher level career tigers who have yet not been tainted with war crimes. Some of these guys have been inclined towards making deals, as the writing on the wall is obvious to them, even more than to us.
Given the fact that they are more valuable in place, rather than as surrendees (karuna was a burden) the MI is understood to have made them into 'sleepers' for intel and structural collapse when the time comes.

Moshe Dyan said...

Baluraj's death is the beggining of the end of the LTTE which is headed by an aging lot who are too greedy to hold on to power.

however, sadly, we have missed the point here. nature has showed us a path that will lead to total annihilation of the LTTE. it is simple. SL IS THE ONLY COUNTRY PROVIDING FREE MEDICINE TO TERRORISTS AND THE ENEMY. this MUST stop now. of course there are civilians. but as my RED CROSS contacts tell me, LTTE robs all the medicine, food, etc. and civilians won't be worse-off by an embargo. they are already in the rock bottom. ALL MEDICINE FLOW TO VANNI AND FREE MEDICAL FACILITIES MUST STOP.

BTW it was CBK and MR who allowed daya master to seek medical attention at APPOLO hospital for a heart attack. how supid?

there is no law to stop SL doing so. as long as we don't bomb hospitals, ambulances and the like in vanni that's enough.

mother nature has shown us the way and we know about the aging LTTE leadership. now its our call. just do it.

Good god, did they call this dude a Brigadier? Where do these terrorists get all these titles? I am sure chief thug Prabakaran pulls them out of his rear end after eating Pinto Beans. By typical NATO standard a brigade consists of approximately 4,000 to 5,000 troops. This dead Terrorist dude did not command a number of terrorists remotely close to that.
If this dude is a Brigadier I am a Field Marshal!

-----------------------------------

Interesting point there TS, I have also always suspected that such an undercurrent of thought might exist within the sinhalese hardliners.

Already close to 1 million of the SL Tamils live outside SL, and a significant chunk of the remaining Tamils lost their young men, women and children to this war.

If you remember, there is a poster here by the handle "rover" who said that the Ltte's habit of using women(of reproductive age) and children in the frontlines will have serious consequences for the future demographics of the Tamil population. He claims to have mapped out a graph of the populations of the different ethnic groups of SL and found that the Tamils are leading themselves to extinction by fighting this decades long struggle that has seen huge chunks of their young women and children die in the battlefield.

I think he is right, the Tamil population's growth has already slowed down and its seems like the muslim population will soon overtake them. On top of that it seems that most of the diaspora and their children will not give up their western standards of living and return to Eelam even if it is created.

at least this time hopefully the heads at the MoD will take some stern action EARLY.

confirming this report, a home guard has been killed in Buttala.

this is a direct result of the "chase away" strategy. at least now SLDFs should follow a killing strategy. it doesn't matter tigers are DISPLACED as long as they have the numbers. we have only displaced them and not extinguished their numbers.

something tells me that LTTE will reverse military victories of 2005-08 in time for the upcoming elections. they only need to cause some what "persistant" havoc in "liberated" areas. this will be a double blow with both political and military consequences.

Unknown said...

Moshe,

I hope at least this time the government will do something proactive! They have no choice but to hunt down this group of terrorists and kill then before they even overrun a small base. If they managed to destabilise the east, then we can pretty much say goodbye to all the gains we've made so far as the army will have to be redeployed to protect the east.

Which makes me think, could this be a trap by LTTE? I mean, could they be feeding misinformation to MI so that they refocus on the east and go a wild goose chase while LTTE regroups in Wanni?

Unknown said...

If LTTE to infiltrate 1500 troops in to the jungles of the EAST, then it would also mean lot of food items also need to be in stock or taken from nearby villages. MI should be getting infomation on these. The best line of deffence is Attack & that is something the LTTE lacked in the recent past. They will continue trying to attack isolated SLDF positions with only 10~20 troops to deffend so that they can have a moral boost for their international campaigns. Then again they would not need thousands to do that...
Gainings in the WELIOYA Front is the crucial point & that would also mean their Strongholds within reach of the MBRL's & artilery...

perein said...

Why do n't we get Karuna's team look after the jungle in East.
That's their back yard. Since now they are officially elected, surely should not be a big problem of merging them towards forces.

Moshe Dyan said...

parakrama,

"Which makes me think, could this be a trap by LTTE? I mean, could they be feeding misinformation to MI so that they refocus on the east and go a wild goose chase while LTTE regroups in Wanni?"

VERY much possible. but SLDFs should not do the mistake they did after riviresa. east should remain fully under the SLDFs.

but there are good reasons for the LTTE to look eastward again.

1. now the east is in "real mess" from an LTTE pov. muslims are claiming it to be governed by them on one hand and the TMVP is running the show on the other.

2. the whole world knows now about the impractical tamil homeland myth. LTTE tried all the tricks in the world to chase away the muslims by bombing, firing, etc. in mosques, etc. but muslims have prevailed.

3. the VAST eastern sea front is lost making it very difficult to bring weapons shipments. if vidathalitivu falls, another big blow.

4. if SLA can be redirected to the east ACTUALLY to neitralise actual LTTE acts, that can extend the northern battles and allow time to regroup, etc.

5. the most important front - the welioya front - is getting active. this can reach mulaitivu which is the MOST secret tiger den MOSTLY untouched by the SLA for over 20 years. many tiger infrastructure is there. LTTE is trying to attack hambantota, kataragama in an attempt to drive home the idea that "if you attack our leader's area, we will attack your leader's district/electorate/village".

yep. hopefully govt. will act proactively this time. it will be a real nightmare if bloody tigers start playing hide & seek in southern jungles.

Unknown said...

Moshe,

What we need is good human intel. Now that the east is in our hands, we should be able to develop a very good intel network that covers eastern province and deep south.

Also, CDF need to be better trained. So, if LTTE infiltrates deep south, then CDF can take care of it without diverting the attention of the army.

A good intel network together with CDF is enough to solve this problem as LTTE are there but don’t have big guns. We should never be complacent though, there still a chance that they’ve hidden some weapons in the east and the new infiltrators will know exactly where to find them.

I hope the government, as usual, doesn’t ignore the problem until it gets out of hand!

What the army needs to do as number 1 priority is to close off this "Beirut trail".

Hi everyone,
although i did not post comments, iam a regular visitor of Defencewire and defencenet.

First i really have to thank DN and DW for their efforts.

I have few ideas that i would like to share.

One of the main worries i have is the eastern province because of tiger infiltration.

DW earlier said that 61st brigade is in their final training period.
Why cant they put them in eastern provine to clear tiger infiltartors (as a training exercise). it has few obvious advantages, like
it will be a good training exercise in jungle warfare although some risks involved with their lives.
it will be cost effective.
casualties will be low since LTTE is not using heavy indirect fire in EP.
Main offensive brigades can concentrate on all important north.
By the time they will open a new front we will have battle oriented 61st brigade.
Those were my thoughts for the moment
Thanks again for service you are doing

Sri Lanka loses in the race for HRC seat
[TamilNet, Wednesday, 21 May 2008, 17:05 GMT]
Sri Lanka, which was backed by India, China and reportedly also by Japan, has lost in the race in getting re-elected to the seat of the 47-member UN Human Rights Council. Sri Lanka received 101 votes and ranked 5th among the six Asian countries vying for four seats in the secret ballot of the U.N. General Assembly held in New York on Wednesday.

Japan received 155 votes, Bahrain 142, South Korea 139, Pakistan 114 and Sri Lanka 101.

The Human Rights Council (HRC), based in Geneva, was established on 15 March 2006 and consists of forty-seven Member States of the United Nations. The Council replaced the former 53-seat U.N. Commission on Human Rights (UNCHR), which was often criticized for its failure to objectively address human rights violations in individual countries.

Fifteen of the HRC's 47 seats will be decided by U.N. General Assembly secret ballot which is the third annual election for the Geneva-based council.

13 of the 47 seats are allocated for the 44 Asian Member States of the United Nations.

The HRC is an intergovernmental UN Charter-based body, which meets in Geneva 10 weeks a year, and is composed of 47 elected UN Member States who serve for an initial period of 3 years. Council membership is limited to two consecutive terms, and any Council member may be suspended by a two-thirds vote of the Assembly.

A key component of the Council is a periodic review of all 192 UN member states, called Universal Periodic Review (UPR), which is a mechanism based on reports from different sources, including the NGOs. Each country's situation will be examined during a three hours debate, during their term of membership.

Unknown said...

Bhairav,

Unknown said...

Kaavalan,

I did not legitimise TE with my above comment, don't try to twist it. I don't think understood it properly, so let me spell it out for you...

- "Do you have a seat on that council? " -> You don't, because you are terrorists!
- The rest of it can be explained by "people in glass houses should not throw stones"

Is it still unclear for you? If so, please go back to school and learn something before you get behind a keyboard again!

Here's a reality of TE, I put this together by reading comments from Peter, Bhairav & Shyam (three well known terrorists):

So, together with Bhairav & Shyam they've admitted:

1 - that LTTE carried out ethnic cleansing in the east
2 - that LTTE is a terrorist outfit
3 – that LTTE is ready to even desecrate Hindu gods to grab some power
4 - that Eelam has NOT existed before and it's not a historical concept and they are fighting to create a new concept!

(Read previous posts on DW & DN if you don't know what I'm talking about)

Unknown said...

Kaavalan,

One more thing, I do not condone rights abuses from either side. If you read my previous posts you'll see that I do not approve of human rights abuses by either side. So, I'm not saying that everything rosy on our side. All I'm saying is that LTTE has no right to talk about human rights.

If they had any shame, they'd keep their mouths shut, but as we all know, LTTE are a bunch of immoral, blood thirsty, two faced, principle-less, power hungry bunch of terrorists. This is why they try score propaganda points using human rights issue.

When did this man really die. Perhaps, he got killed by a SLAF bombers a while ago and they delayed the funeral to cover their rears? What are your thoughts on such possibilities?

Sam,
I have the same doubts.

A gathering of terrorists is a legit target.

The SLAF should have the co-ordinates for this ape's funeral.

droe to work in heavy traffic these past few days thanks to the galle face road being closed up after the recent suicide attack...
it's closed from both sides for normal traffic causing huge blocks in that area and surrounding areas... the blocks go up as far as flower road col 3 cos these roads have to handle larger levels of traffic...

what really beats me is that is closing up the roads the best solution for suicide attacks???
don't think they are still investigating the site of the incident cos it's been a few days and none of the earlier bombs spots have been closed up this long before...
Would appreciate if there's any "locally based" expert to shed some light on this...
on the other side if tigers blow up another bomb in these now heavily congested roads...the casualty figures will be much much higher...

Guys..

I checked the photos of Balraj's funeral at http://www.puthinam.com/full.php?2b1Voqe0dKcYA0ecKA4o3b4g6DB4d3f1e3cc2AmI3d424OO2a030Mt3e

All of them are photo shopped.

The fat pig has been stood in front of a Green Screen and taken the photos and then have been overalyed here. The photos have two layers that have been flattened later.

Nice try, but crappy Photo Shop work. Margins of how the photos were cut is very visible when the I applied several filters.

Hooo! Hooo! The Photo Shop guy should be fired now!

I have no idea how u checked those pictures but I kind of know little about image editing and seem like they look real. Because outline seems to be not pixelated. also Mirrored reflectoins seems legitimate. anyway for me it looks ok, Anyway hope rest of the LTTE Leadres will follow in same fashion.

mate i also had a close look and can't seem to find these photoshopped signs
the lighting matches on all, reflection of the garland and camo kits seems to be true...
and you dont need a green screen to photoshop anyways...
i can't see any masking marks, lighting mismatches etc..
any specific areas to check?

Since Barberselvam was bombed and VP was thought to have been injured, I have not seen any pictures of VP where his full figure from head to toe is shown. Even in the latest Tamilnut pictures, Baluraja’s casket conveniently hides the sun goat’s lower body.

Wow isn’t VP a fat old boy! His Eelam Kingdom looks jolly prosperous…

Re; the marginalization of tamils, the population numbers of SL Tamils now have declined to the level of the 4th minority, behind the 'estate' (or indian origin)tamils and Muslims. In an era of overwhelming communication, it is now just a couple of decades away from complete absorption into the Indian tamil culture. Those who've migrated abroad, will never be able to maintain the uniqueness of the SL tamil culture either, as the kids grow up in westernized civilizations.
Strangely, by a combination of deliberate action and/or coincidence, what the southern extremists wanted to happen over two decades ago has been delivered to them on a plate by the tamil extremists. Irrespective of the efforts of the moderates and stupid peaceniks, the extremist agenda was set to win due to the tamil's fatal flaw of co-existance inability. The real tragi-comedy of it is how the tamils still seem to consider their vicious racism a strength and a sign of superiority, when it is the intellectual parallel of a wild-hog life style.
Eventually, evolution will continue to grind on even in this case, wiping out those who are less evolved in suitability to fit into the futuristic environment.
