Tunukkai falls. Mallavi is next

As predicted, Tunukkai fell to the Army without major incidents today. The LTTE was unable to resist mesmerizing attacks from all directions by small SLA units that infiltrated the area days ago. By last evening, LTTE began to withdraw from the Town area. After six abortive bids to defend Tunukkai the main defeat to the Tigers came as expected at Kalvilan.

Remaining Charles Anthony, Imran Pandian, Kutti Sri and Intelligence units retreated further east to the town of Mallavi, which will become the next major battle very soon. With the simultaneous capture of Uylankulam by 4GW northeast of Tunukkai, Tigers had no option but to move east.

The SLA is confidant that Mallavi too will fall within a week. Meanwhile 8 Tigers were killed in an air strike launched yesterday at Palamottai, northwest of Omanthai yesterday. The newly formed 62 Division is operating in this region.

Meanwhile intelligence sources have obtained credible information indicating that the LTTE is planning to increase its strength in the East. The objective is to collapse the SLA's advance but also to prevent new Army Divisions and Brigades currently in the East from joining the fighting further north. The LTTE is also seeking an opportunity to regain its credibility with the Tamil Diaspora.

I agree with LTTE's new attemps in the east, perhaps karuna groups fighters may have to be mobilized....which is taking place now.

we should see more battalions joining the fight as almost 2000-3000 join every month. there are quite a bit training and actually we do not have enough training facilities to infuse the fronts with soldiers.

I am so pleased with planners of not confronting the targets head on and instead patiently utilized battle tactics.

LTTE now has no where to go, they can reinforce from north as the uliyankulum junction and east will now be infiltrated with SLA forces

LTTE's only option is to retreat to the east and then find strong points to defend, the game is almost over...but it wont be until we reach mulativu and take over whole vanni...before divising a political package for this damned LTTE curse and always insecure tamil's of sri lanka...

LTTE has already started w/d along the mankulum junction. I bet the Heavy guns have now been moved north of kilinochchi for eventual defense of that city.

Taking EP is not a good option withouth captuing the poonaryn area--to kilinochchi as it keeps a whole 12,000 group occupied defending...

LTTE will not try to use the Jungles around kokavi - which they used back in Jayasikuru unless our boys get in there first .... and establish bases

the goal should be to prevent LTTE from further recruiting, forming large groups of attack forces, and eliminate hiding places in the Jungles.

When this war ends, our tamil brothers will have to join us to make this nation of Sri Lankans a better place. We have to throw away the decades old animosity and rely on each other...

What LTTE promised...is not possible...just as the utopia JVP promised....so many people have died from both of our sides....close to 150 thousand from JVP + LTTE combination...

and both partially for the same reasons....although they suger coated it differently...

Now is the time LTTE cadre as well as diaspora....need to join us and make sure we can develop this nation...and bring back the Sri Lankan pride

We did in yesterday's post mention the 58 advancing 4kms from Nachchikuda but did not mention where. But we did mention SF and Cdo activities south of Akkarayan town near Akkarayankulam. Akkarayankulam bund is however not a strategic point like Tunukkai or Mallavi. But if the troops reach Iranamadu, then it will be. Have patience. All in good time!

Congrats! All the best!
I think coming days are very important for SLAF, they have a great role to play. They must keep eye on LTTE flying tin cans, bcz i feel they may try Sep 11 Wtc type attack on sri lanka's economic targets such as WTC,Harbour etc. They can use explosive fitted aircrafts for suicide type attack since they will not have place to hide these planes. So Coming months will tell us how effective our newly acquired raidars are.

Defwire:

I've been reading this blog for a long time and I'd like to express my sincere thanks to the people behind it in giving us a honest review of the situation.

Watching these developments unfold, the SLA's objective appears to be to destroy the LTTE in 'Death by a Thousand Cuts' rather than one or two massive blows. For example, the previous offensives e.g. Jayasikiru, were massive but very costly in our own soldiers' lives. Almost a decade later, we finally appear to have mastered the art of co-ordinated, simultaneous, multiple attacks, not giving the LTTE time to re-group.

I presume the LTTE's command structure are by now perfectly well aware of our general strategy. But they must realise that the game is up, rather like the Germans in 1943 onwards. The parallel with WW2 Germany is very apt; like the Germans in 1943-45, the LTTE and its disapora are waiting for VP to unleash his 'miracle weapons'. I hope that if he has any, it'll be too little, too late, again like WW2.

If the Rajapakse govt and SLA High Command's public pronouncements are to be taken at face value, the LTTE are facing the SLA in 'Terminator' mode.

I understand the Prahba is an action film fan. If any of you pro-LTTE chaps can pass on a message, VP and the entire LTTE command structure should memorise these lines from 'The Terminator, with just one word changed. 'Sri Lanka Army' instead of 'Terminator' :)

"Listen and understand. The Sri Lanka Army is out there. It can't be bargained with, it can't be reasoned with. It doesn't feel pity, or remorse, or fear, and it absolutely will not stop. Ever. Until you are dead"

Hope that they all will succeed alomg with 62, and soon to be 63. Bless the brave soldiers of Sri Lanka.

To everyone who are trying to argue with the LTTE fanatics, may be you can check out the article below on "Psychopaths"

http://www.cassiopaea.com/cassiopaea/psychopath.htm

Here is a small excerpt from it:

----------------------

A man with a conviction is a hard man to change. Tell him you disagree and he turns away. Show him facts or figures and he questions your sources. Appeal to logic and he fails to see your point.

We have all experienced the futility of trying to change a strong conviction, especially if the convinced person has some investment in his belief. We are familiar with the variety of ingenious defenses with which people protect their convictions, managing to keep them unscathed through the most devastating attacks.

But man's resourcefulness goes beyond simply protecting a belief. Suppose an individual believes something with his whole heart; suppose further that he has a commitment to this belief, that he has taken irrevocable actions because of it; finally, suppose that he is presented with evidence, unequivocal and undeniable evidence, that his belief is wrong: what will happen? The individual will frequently emerge, not only unshaken, but even more convinced of the truth of his beliefs than ever before. Indeed, he may even show a new fervor about convincing and converting other people to his view.
--------------------

The trick is ofcourse, to make sure that we are not doing the same thing.

Moshe,

This is a true reflection of disruptiveness brought in to Sri Lankan society by LTTE terrorists. Everywhere, for the pure racial hatred, LTTE members try to destroy harmony in anything, most likely a result of intense brainwashing.

Moshe Dyan said...

Sam,

exactly. but we are not fully out of danger yet. tigers and their RELATIVE supporters/sympathisers/'approvers' (my word) can still disrupt the SLDFs.

e.g. if a political change happens in the NCP, that can lead to serious security issues. one candidate has already promised to remove some KEY checkpoints manned by former terrorists who know the INFILTRATION trade only too well.

unity among us (all sri lankans) is ALWAYS vital and so far it has been there.

Bhairav said...

Moshy,

When Tamil IDs were victim of fakes, you were clapping with others, now you are whining?

I would say whoever that fake was should put lock on "Moshy", so that we can see more whining from him. After all, it is easy to be real Moshy if you put some keyword stuffing in the posts likes of harvesting techniques and statistical models. The Mahavidyala school educated folks find his postings very interesting, but I think other way around as nothing but recycle of garbage.

The LTTE Tamils are very angry and bitter.

They showed up here and tried to de-rail this blog a few months ago by posting rude comments to piss of the Sinhala posters, so that this blog would be turned into pissing contest instead of a defence blog.

This tactic failed when fake identical Tamil screen names started appearing and posting hilarious comments to insult the LTTE.

This fustrated the LTTE Tamils here even more, because now they can't ruin the discussion flow of this blog.

So now they have resorted to spamming this blog in order to destroy it.

Why do LTTE Tamil posters come here to ruin the blog?

There are no Sinhala posters trying to ruin Tamil blogs.

This shows to everyone in the outside world who is evil. We have been dealing with this bullshit for 2500 years.

But don't worry you colonial menial day-laborer coolies, your end will soon come, even the former white masters oceans away can see it.

DON'T WORRY....Extinction is near after 20 years of war and shooting yourselfs in the foot by using women and children for battle.

GoldenEagle said...

This banana eating coolie Horey come here and talks about "murdering Tamil voices" in this blog. Is this a new form of genocide you guys claim?

If LTTE tamil posters don't like it here they can leave.

You guys hate the Sinhala people so much, YET you can't stop smelling our shit can you? I don't blame you, its those toilet janitor genes you carry that make you do it.

You won't see Sinhala bloggers trying to ruin Tamil blogs. Thats because we don't like smelling your coolie crap.

machang said...

Guys,

Understand your frustration, but their ultimate goal is by making us angry to make us look like the racists. Exactly what they did by killing soldiers in '83, exactly what they try to do again but failed. So let me just say, don't scream filth back at them and tell them they are wrong because they are Tamil, but tell them they are wrong because their thinking is wrong, simple as that. Let them be the ones who come here and tell us that we are the bad guy because we are Sinhalese, don't get involved in their lowly trade of point the finger at the racist because we are not.

Since the some of the Western countries likes of Germany stopped their funding due to increasing human rights violations in SL, the rouge Srilankan government turned its begging bowl to China,Pakistan and Iran, of them China is the biggest Srilankan donor so far this year with 100s of million dollar aid. The pakistani and Chinese arms chips reach Colombo port every other week while Iran is even willing to share its nuclear technology with Srilanka. Meantime India wanted to maintain its foot in SL for their geopolitical interests and current love affair of SL with its foes became real concern for India. To offset the current threats from its foes, India decided to arm Srilanka secretly to avoid the backlash from one of its states,Tamilnadu. The dependency for aid for SL on western countries shifted into its regional allies, and the hawkish Srilankan government wanted to cash in from these four willing partners to crush LTTE rebels at any cost ignoring the increasing human rights violations such as daily abduction, raping, and killing etc. What SL is doing now ethnic cleansing of Tamils with the support of regional allies.

India lost its moral values long ago, I hope that Muslim fanatics will turn the table on these sneaky Indians soon, you already see some activities from Srinagar last week. When current unrest among global powers likes of NATO,EU and Russia are making headlines, the ethnic cleansing of Srilankan Tamils may not even appear on back page of any mainstream newspapers. I would like to thank WT for giving some space for current Srilankan civil war.

Thank You,

So many doubles! That's how some release thier frustration over Thukkai. Thus we should expect more doubles.

SLA is winning the war. But who is winning the propaganda war. check:

http://washingtontimes.com/news/2008/aug/23/fighting-intensifies-in-sri-lanka/

Some of the comments:

//Then Rajapakse dispatched his 99% Sinhalese forces after minority Tamil rebels. The Sinhala forces slaughtered at least 7000 Tamils civilians (between 2005-2008). The slaughter wasn't personal. It was business. It always is with Mugabe like war mongers. The bloodshed allowed Rajapakse to feed the blood thirsty Buddhist Clergy , enabling him to establish a one-family government.//

//..and the hawkish Srilankan government wanted to cash in from these four willing partners to crush LTTE rebels at any cost ignoring the increasing human rights violations such as daily abduction, raping, and killing etc.//

//Sri Lanka government is continuing its ethnic cleansing in the name fighting LTTE. Their weapon of choice is starvation. LTTE has been more then willing to negotiate a settlement for the conflict. Sri Lankan
government will not, because they want to carry out their final solution for tamils.//

I can also confirm from LTTE sources that Tunukkai has not fallen to the SLA. An attempt by special commandoes of the SLA was attempted, but the attack was thwarted, with heavy losses for the SLA. Two armoured vehicles including a T-55 were lost and LTTE has captured two dead bodies.

Even thambala's post admit this. Since defence.lk only admits to general area of tunnakai and not the town. Also there is complete lack of photos, videos or other pieces of evidence.

Upul,
Well it's been a long time since you've shown your face in these blogs.

It's a nice try pretending to ignore all the visual evidence at defence.lk on Thunukkai fall.

What seems to be happening is that LTTE is attacking probably from Mallavi and surrounding areas.

But definitely LTTE is showing signs of recapturing Thunukkai and there by prevent more inroads to Mallavi, Mankulam.

And it seems like your LTTE source has fed you with some diaspora slop that Shyam also enjoys slurping on regularly.

By the way, the world should know how unbiased and reliable Puthinam is when it come to reporting the Sri Lanka/Eelam war to the world audience in all languages. No photos at all, all what you saw was some staged photos of a few buildings in Thunukkai. Yes, that is a clear indication that the Army Commander just went somewhere else to congratulate the 57th division for walking in a park in Colombo.

Guys, is Tunukai anywhere in between K'chchi and Mullaitivu or to the south of one of them?

Doesn't the SLA have a greater advantage in cordoning off these two areas and then taking Killi first? Killing Velu there would eliminate any need to even pursue a war in the Mullaitivu jungles.

TropicalStorm said...

Upul

Thunukkai was captured by someone, obviously, and the Rupavahini camera crew is there. You can see their report on youtube.

If you insist it isn't the SLA, I believe you. But I've gotta believe what I see as well.

It looks like Saman Kumara Ramawickrama of Rupavahini corp, backed by his cameraman captured Tunukkai from the LTTE!

These guys are tougher than we think. They even beat the crap outa that Merv the Perv chap, remember? So it is little wonder that the Rupavahini beat the LTTE, when the SLA could not.

as usual TE supporters are grabbing to every strand of hair of vezapillai in real desperation.

1. b4 SAARC they said indians will come here to stop SLDFs. when the indians were here SLDFs smashed the LTTE like never b4!!

2. then they started another crap story about OBAMA trying to save the barbarians.

3. thereafter they said the rainy season (which is more than 3 months away) is going to save kili.

4. the PC election might save them, some thought

5. how about global warming????

even IF india may want to stop SLDFs from going into kili & mulaitivu, there is nothing they can do. the last thing india wants is for GOSL to invite the chinese military here (in which case they will have NO hesitation whatsoever) as a symbolic gesture to put off india. india has been TOTALLY SUBMISSIVE to china after 1962. tibet, burma, maoist rebels, kashmir, pakistan, bangla, etc. etc, so many chinese provocations MILITARILY. but no indian response.

SL only need a VERY small chinese symbolic presence here, IF required, to keep india away.

thats the WORST case. ground situ is much more favourable to BOTH india and SL.

DW and others,

how about seperating kili & mula before taking them?

1. we have the numbers superiority

2. LTTE finds it VERY difficult to relocate, reallocate, reposition its few resources between two battlefronts.

3. now LTTE is putting ALL its weight around kili

4. if 3 above can be divided into two, we can halve LTTE's strength in EACH of its last big hideouts.

5. without geographically dividing by a dividing thrust, SLDFs can intensify attacks on them at the same time giving the impression that both are likely to be captured.

6. tigers have NEVER defended 2 places (of such importance) at the same time.

Moshe..,

I was also thinking in that line. What you say sounds like a good strategy. However an alternative would be to seperate pooneryn from Mullathiv.. by capturing Killinochchi. In this way we will have several benefits.

1. It would be easy for 58th to get poonery when the main LTTE supply roots are blocked.

2. It will be easy for 53rd and 55th to move into EP and thereby open up the land supply root A9.

3. Fights in Mullathiv will totally eliminate LTTE with 59 fighting from south of Mulathiv and 58 and from South-west and west of Mulathiv and 58 from Northwest and 53rd and 55th from North.

( To add some icing to the cake , an amphibious landing by the Navy from the east cost would be ideal )

Observer said...

I forgot TF2 in the baove post and that spells even more disaster to terrorists.

As it looks now, at least LTTE expects that Mullathiv will be where the last will be fought.

We can get a clue , from the expansion of the air strip locate din puthukuduyiruppu.

If we think in that line they might be already moving there heavy guns from pooneryn to mulathiv. Because we know they will never wat us to get them like in the case of Vakarai.

If they have already done that 53rd or 55th could try to move forward even now.

Observer said...

Sorry for the typos in my prev posts guys..

Moshe Dyan said...

observer,

good points, mate.

i prefer your strategy; seems better.

1. however capturing kili alone is not going to seperate poonaryn from mulaitivu. there should be a thrust THROUGH kili to the EAST coast. otherwise tigers can link mulaitivu-palai/EP-poonaryn.

2. this cut through thrust is going to be VERY dangerous as it falls within arti ranges of mulaitivu & poonaryn. IF it takes november to take kili, the rainy season is going to disrupt this move. however, it is a HIGH YIELDING (HARVESTING tigers) strategy.

3. OTOH if we attack mulaitivu while attacking kili, tigers will be at the receiving end. they will have to either RELOCATE or ABANDON their most secret fortifications in mulaitivu. in other words, rains will be to our advantage when the time comes.

4. i prefer to dislodge LTTE fortifications within this year (b4 november) in mulaitivu. otherwise they have time till feb/march next year to get the IC bail them out, bring shipments, etc., etc.

of course op.s will continue in the rainy season, but my point is we can turn it to our advantage. imagine tigers moving their big guns, arti/mortar shells, leaders, cadres, communication equipment, radars, planes, etc. in foul weather in an area with no fortifications!!!!

5. i just love to imagine vezapillai and other bunker rats becoming IDPs.

we discussed india-china many times here.

from,

http://www.spacewar.com/reports/India_Set_To_Ramp_Up_Air_Force_Part_One_999.html

India Set To Ramp Up Air Force Part One

Within the next four months, a first batch of eight Russian-built Sukhoi Su-30MKI multirole fighters will be positioned at India's Tezpur Air Base in the state of Assam, near the border with China, an Indian navy source has revealed.
This is almost six months ahead of the timeline reported some time ago in the Indian media.
This will be the first time for Su-30MKI fighters to be deployed so close to the Indian-Chinese border. The deployment of two squadrons of Su-30MKI fighters at Tezpur Air Base in the eastern part of the country will greatly enhance India's capability to launch aerial precision attacks on China.
The Sukhoi Su-30MKI's 932-mile combat radius is enough to cover all the major cities in southwest China, including Kunming, Chengdu and Chongqing. India plans to outfit the fighters with the latest BrahMos air-to-ground supersonic missiles, which have a 180-mile range. India's aerial refueling capability will greatly extend the combat radius of the aircraft. The BrahMos is co-produced by India and Russia.
Along the Indian-Chinese border, air power has been shifting in favor of India. First of all, India has quite a number of airports in Assam and the disputed territory of Arunachal Pradesh, making troop maneuvers easier. In the Tibet region, China has only the Kang-ko Airport in eastern Tibet, the Gongka Airport in Lhasa and one more known as the Hidden Airport. Fighter aircraft are not normally stationed at any of these airports.
China has sent Sukhoi Su-27SK fighters to this area for airport transfer training on the plateau. Troops who took part in this training reportedly faced difficulties in logistic support and supply. In the nearby Chengdu Military Region, the only air force units with decent combat strength are one J-10A regiment under the PLA Air Force's No. 44 Division and one Su-27 regiment under the No. 33 Division.
The Diqing and Zhongdian airports in Yunnan province could be used for operations against India, but these are small civilian airports.
India has built a number of airports in the state of Arunachal Pradesh, including seven military airports. The small Teju New Airport, located close to the border with China, has only one runway and is mainly used for rapid transport by helicopter. It could be used as a runway for MiG-21 fighters to take off and land.
There is another similar airport in Machuka, again close to the border. A small airport at Sookerating has one runway, while the Along Airport is also available for fast landing and takeoff of helicopters, indicating that the Indian air force attaches great importance to fast reaction capability.
Other small front-line airport facilities include the Jorhat Airport and Lilabari Airport. The Chabua Airport can field not only An-32 light transport aircraft but also Mi-8/17 helicopters, and is the pivotal airport for the Indian air force to quickly deliver troops in the region. Two runways have been built at this airport.
To the south of Arunachal Pradesh is Assam, where Tezpur is the largest military airport. Tezpur Airport, now preparing to receive the Sukhoi Su-30MKI fighters, is no more than 300 miles from the practical line of control at the China-India border. The Indian Air Defense Force No. 30 Squadron is stationed there, armed with 16 MiG-21FL fighters, all of which are now anchored in mound-structured hangars.
Two other small airports have been built in Assam, the Dimapir and Kumbhirgram dual-use airports. The Indian air force also has the Lengpui, Barapani and Guwahati airports in the area.

Moshe,

Possibly you remeber that we earlier discussed about the location of the division 62. In particular one argument was it should have been east of A9. But the Division was deployed in the west of A9.

Now I think its obivous as to why east of A9 was not re-inforced at that time. In other words ultimately all the Divisions will be push towards east.

Lets wait and see what our good General is upto...

Observer said...

Im sorry it should be TF2 in the above comment instead of 62

Moshe Dyan said...

observer,

yes; it all adds up!! very intersting.

What if our guys cut across vellankulam - Mankulam axis upto the eastern front and divide the wanni into 2... will that be a disastrous situ or will it be to our advantage??

I dont mean to abort highly successful small group attacks and turn into a jayasikurui type ops, But to continue with small groups in a way that all the divisions eventually cut the tiger territory into 2.

I feel that would isolate the tiger pussies from north and south.... But is that a feasible thing?? looks like 57 and 58 going in this trend??? will the 59 too join in??

phaedrus said...

Glad to see the discussion coming back to defence matters.

The difficulty I see with trying to divide the LTTE area in two is the it would give more opportunities for the LTTE to attach our supply lines and surround groups of troops for one or two high profile attacks.

I think the army is giving priority to securing A32. The current position of the 57 near Akkarayankulam is effectively discouraging an offensive on the 58 troops marching north. With them close to both 58 and Kilinochchi, LTTE would hesitate to use a large force to attack 58. If the A32 is opened and 53 can come down from Jaffna, then there is the option of them or 58 marching on to Elephant Pass from the south while the other two lay seige to Kilinochchi. In that case, LTTE will have to abandon EP without a fight so that they don't get caught in the middle. This will leave 3 or 4 divisions for the seige of kilinochchi.

If this can be accomplished in 2 months while 59 capture Mullativu, then the LTTE will be caught in the jungles in the A9-A34-A35 triangle during the rainy season.

This is just one option that comes to mind from looking at the current positions. i guess another option would be, if the 57 is strong enough, to take Iranamadu on the A9 and march on to Kilinochchi. Even if they don't directly attach, the fact that the army is at the gate will mean most of the LTTE cadres will have to be recalled to defend the city, which would leave most other divisions to get on with their work in peace.

Btw, any idea why TF2 doesn't seem to move about much? I thought they would have been given the task of taking Mallavi and Mankulam.

Kithul said...

cutting off Killi from Mullaitivu would mean back to moving a sizeable column which would expose both flanks to attack. columnar movements have proved disastrous.

the current strategy of dominating areas ahead of captured land has proven effective. this strategy has also effectively thwarted counter attacks bcos reinforcements have been ambushed and the pussy's fear SF lurking all over the place. the best examples were the movement ahead of viddaltivu and also when tunukkai was captured troops had moved as far as akkarankulam. also small teams can be anywhere ahead of areas captured.

Unknown said...

In my opinion bringing down troops from Jaffna could be a bad idea. When the Terrorists get constricted as a pressurised system would it will try to break out from the weak places. Jaffna lines would be on their list of most wanted acquisitions. If they manage to route Jaffna could be a turning point for them during this juncture. So I would keep those troops where they are.

We do have other reserves don't we?

The LTTE is using chemical warfare?
http://www.army.lk/morenews.php?id=16426
If so, this is in blatant disregard to the Chemical Weapons Convention of 1993, which has been signed by 184 countries (not Iraq, N. Korea).
This is really bad, and as an independent observer, the LTTe is making the biggest mistake in their so-called independence struggle to date.
