Zlins target Indra II Radar

Indra II low-level Doppler Radar by Electronics Research and Development Establishment (LRDE) and Bharat Electronics
It is now reliably learnt that the Zlin 143s that attacked the SLAF base at Vavuniya had targeted the Indra II Radar system at the airbase, which had successfully detected them on three separate occasions to date.

Reports indicated that the radar system was slightly damaged after a bomb fell close to it. Two Indian nationals operating the radar system were injured in the blast.

Late last night a team of Tigers who had infiltrated Vavuniya government held area to the south of the SLAF and Army base at Vavuniya from jungles in the Irattaperiyakulam area were engaged by the Army. The SLAF base and the Vavuniya SF HQ lay side by side and is divided only by a fence.

9 dead bodies of Tigers have been recovered so far. The team had given arti-correction coordinates for LTTE 120mm canons before being detected and attacked.

This means that they are tryin to blind our AD and CAP... we must now expect a raid on the radars by land and be ready.

Hope the radar, C4I center and the Genarators are servisable? "indian persons" hmmm.... that is food for thought

Is this the 3D RADAR we got from India? The million dollar question you don't have to answer is whether LTTE was successful in disabling the RADAR?

Firerain said...

That infomation would be higly classified especially if the radar IS disabled.

Moshe Dyan said...

thanks DW.

i'm concerned about the radar system. if it is not working, tigers have won at least partly and we have lost. this is THE bottomline.

it doesn't matter it is repairable, servicable or other nonsense if it is NOT functioning as required.

from where did the tigers shell the base?

IF (i mean IF) it was from the area immediately NORTH of OMANTHAI, then fcuk the IDIOTS at MoD. we pointed out repeatedly the dangers posed by this OMANTHAI crap. for humanitarian reasons we keep the OMANTHAI entry/exit point ALLOWING barbarian tigers to operate in their side of the area which is the SOUTHERN-MOST point in LTTE held areas today.

IF it is not so, my comment is not applicable.

Indian researchers continuously work with these radars, so that they could develop them further. TAF gives them an opportunity to further their research on how to intercept planes that try to enter airspaces stealthily. The damage incurred by the arti shells (not the TAF bombs) will be used to further improve the robustness of these radars (also provides how fast that these radars can be redeployed). So, Indians (the people who really matter for the war effort) would consider this as a personal assault on them.

Adding: Two Indians were killed too.

BRAVO!!!1
what a way to start the day :)
well done SLAF :) :)

one thing though...
what if the radar system was damaged beyond repair???
what if the tiger attack succeeded???
we really have to bring the game up now cos i'm sure tigers will give their best since it simply doesn't have an alternative.
The worrying factor is that we can't seem to give adequate protection for our high profile assets enough. The AA fire alone wasn't enough to deter the Zlins..
what's the possibility of having at least MANPADS close to these high profile assets. Since zlins do tend to operate at lower altitudes, is there a way to light up the sky really fast so the AA gunners can spot the intruder faster???
If the F7g's didn't shoot down a Zlin we won't have anything celebrate about.

Security Forces crush major terror attack at Vavuniya
Latest military reports received from Vavuniya reveal that a major attack launched by LTTE terrorists at the security forces headquarters Wanni and Air Force Base Vavuniya early this morning (Sept 9) was completely foiled.

According to the reports, the terrorists launched a pre-dawn ground assault coordinated with artillery fire and an air raid with the intention of causing severe damage to the Air Force assets in the Vavuniya air base.

Defence sources in Vavuniya state, the terrorists launched artillery fire to the Army camp in order to prevent counter attack and directed their ground assault at the airbase. However, valiant soldiers moved forward amid heavy enemy artillery fire and crushed the terror ground assault completely. According to the available information 10 bodies of slain LTTE cadres have been found so far.

Meanwhile, Sri Lanka Air Force fighter jets intercepted two LTTE light aircraft fleeing after failed mission at Vavuniya Air force base and shot down one of the aircraft in the Mullaittivu skies.

10 soldiers laid down their lives and 15 others suffered injuries. One police constable was killed and 8 others sustained injuries due to the enemy artillery fire. Five Air Force personnel also suffered injuries.

More information will follow..

මොරටු සමන් - MoratuSaman said...

How do they (LTTE) know the location of radar Equipments?.

while they were playing around the camp why didn't we detect them?

Past is past now...however can we minimize attack like these…again and again occurring?.

one more thing they might try to attack our Grad rocket system too... so watch out..

I found this video on youtube... .. its a filthy one but good ...

They should change the idiot writing this stories. How did the soldiers crush the artilery fire miles aways.

Unknown said...

Somebody has told the guy to write terror in every few lines. Just state the facts like defencewire. I guess if defencewire team went to write defence news, its would really improve the proffessionalism of the news.

Unknown said...

From the News, guess LTTE plans were to drop the bombs to incapacitate the arti fire source detectors, then start the arti fire to prevent detection. Pro LTTE media claims the barrage lasted 2 hours.

If the shooting down of the planes was sucessful (if the pilot survived he would be probabily be badly burnt might never fly again). Signs of which could be seen by the absence of LTTE air action for a period of time.

Hence in that sense the Air force has been sucessful.

Bro-
I do n't think we have lost by having some damages. We would have lost if the LTTE has landed with out loosing any planes at all.
I would use this as a victory to our forces.
However we should now try to close the gap of avoiding any future damagers to the Radar system going forward.
End of the day our forces are human, we all keep learning every day. Unless look at the positives wont be able to measure the success.

Unknown said...

[From the News, guess LTTE plans were to drop the bombs to incapacitate the arti fire source detectors]

wrong... these are not firefinder radars but radars to detect low flying targets. tigers knew about the presence of this radar and also knew that earlier too they were detected by the same radar. knocking down this radar would've given them free reign in at least certain parts of the north

If the kill was from a missile hit... it's highly doubtful that the zlin pilot survived.

Now they know their limitations. going one on one with an advanced fighter is absolutely foolish so i'm sure they will stick close to their landing strips and operate from there without undertaking longer journeys and risk their assets...

Puffy said...

Congratulations SLAF!!!

Looks like the LTTE tried to carry out another AAB type attack.
If the radar is damaged, we need to keep it a secret...
Otherwise we cant rule out the possibility of another similar attack.
This is a tremendous blow to the LTTE and we should not give them a chance to reverse the humiliation.

I'm just wondering, how stupid is it to think that the LTTE cadres who came for the ground attack were the ones who escaped from konketiyawa?
I know the distance to travel is too much.... but who knows!

Hi there all,

May be Garfield (FatCat P'karan) wanted to neutralize the radars clearing the way for a last ditch attack on an important target: can be human flying bomb type of an attack on aircraft hangers housing the Migs/Kfirs/Hinds wherever the location is. Such an attack could also target a meeting of high level decision makers driving the war from south.

Now that the odds are stack against the pussycats, they will call up their reserves too...so one can expect to see the full strength of the LTTE TinCans: meaning more air crafts will take to the sky (assuming they had more than 2 like the some have suggested)

Here is 2 cents worth from and outsider...

kaatikuddupaan said...

what is the confirmation of the actually shooting down of the LTTE plane ?

this is like when LTTE claimed that a Mig-27 was shot down but there was no wreckage.

I have my doubts about SLAF actually getting one of the planes, but I hope for the sake of our people that it is true.

kaatikuddupaan said...

Also it looks like from the pics on army.lk that the dead cadres are part of Black tigers. Don't ask me why but it definitely appears so.

shay said...

Hi Apino,

Thanks for your post on the other thread mate.

Like I said, we have aircraft capable of intercepting and it was just bad luck that they escaped last time. They would not manage to do that every time.

The risk in this attack is from the black tigers on the ground, not the publicity stunt from the air.

Welldone SLAF !!! A truelly great achievement.

Scrambling fighters and intercepting in the 15-20 minute time frame that is available is an amazing feat and second to none, anywhere in the world.

Unknown said...

Ranil, I know they are aircraft radars. The intial news reports stated that the aircraft attacked first and then artillery. Thats why I postulated that they were trying to take out the fire finders. Taking them out seems more sensible as LTTE nows the real damage would be from the artillery and not from the gravity bombs.

It had ground personnel directing arti fire. I do not know if the suicide cadres were to be responsible to take out the indra radars.

However now it seems that the arti attacked first like in palali and then the air craft came to take out the radars. It seems more sensible to divert the anti aircraft fire.

There is a possibilty that the ZLINS were used to take out the radars unless they were out of arti range (Arti Spotters being on the ground). The radars can detect the planes so why use them to take out the radars.

Unknown said...

B#1, You should give more thought to my stamenet before commenting. Firstly the LTTE aircraft has been sucessfully downed. The possibilty fo one or 2 pilots killed or out of action permanetly.

The LTTE has to rethink its strategy before embarking on its next mission. It does not have one hundred pilots and planes to dispose off. The LTTE has been very careful in using their air assets.

However if their planes were not downed or pilots ejected safely, its highly likely they might try again but again a stragey review is required.

Some comments from other sites have questioned why only one plane was shot down. I guess that LTTE planes splits direction once in their territory. Hence as in this case only one gets shot down. Secondly its only uses 2 planes at a time.

Anonymous said...

Elara

So you are the guy who do tamilnet.tv the official ZTLE site?

The LTTE again managed to infultrate vavuniya and cause damage. Its sad that the military establishment has tried to divert attention to the fact they allowed the LTTE to infaltrate.

Why do the special forces only do the mopping out excerises. True special forces implies specialised force and this could be one of their specialities. However front line troops carrying out search operations will be able to inhibit movement of the LTTE infltrations.

An article of a dead soldier. Good to see tamils also part of the army and not as paramilitary.

Navindran, didn't you smell something here?? within short time period LTTE launched 2nd Air attack. And Im sure they will do this again soon. Why??

the weapons would have been smuggled in during ceasefire period.

The cadres would have just ocme in either from northwestern coast to mannar or from mullai to trinco

they would have been put in a safehouse.

their porrupalar would have then organised their weapons/uniforms and sent them on their way.

Your behavior is consistent with your Dream Eelam:

2. A concept taken forward on the backs of generations fed with lies: your spin-doctoring skills have put Geobels to shame.
3. A concept that has taken the gullible sudda’s for a ride with its horrendous lies: but they have come to realize that and the results are all to see.
4. Concept which is doomed to fail, as it goes against the natural order of things: there is no historical/ present/ future reason for Eeelam to exist.

Wherever you guys go, your “Kana Bathe Rena” behavior/ attitude have lead to your undoing. Time will prove us right…have patience …..

The black tiger squad that acted as spotters would have also had in mind to penetrate close to the radar and take it out, army.lk has pics of them with Bangalore torpedoes (tiger made out of 25mm PVC pipes) which means that they were planning to breach a wire perimeter... luckily our lads had taken them out fast, but not before they had corrected fire from arty which had done some damage, they might have fired illuminating rounds around the radar or set up strobes to guide the two tiger zlins in for the bombing run. The gravity bombs had fallen very close proximity to the radar unit. some had exploded but most had not, arty had also fallen close by.

We need to upgrade the radars to 3D pronto. The enemy knows our limitations and have now exploited it twice by flying low and avoiding radar detection for at least a portion of the flight to target. Time is like gold, we need as much of it to give our AA guys on the ground to give a fighting chance to down these zlins.

DW any news on the upgrade front? I think the one in Katunayake is the only 3d one. I know one of the major reasons for the lack of 3D capability is at least partly due to Indian opposition to a deal to purchase 3Ds from China, but can they surely maintain this position when their own personnel have suffered injuries?

Tiger attack devastates Vanni SF HQ
[TamilNet, Tuesday, 09 September 2008, 07:25 GMT]
The joint attack carried out by the Liberation Tigers of Tamileelam (LTTE) Air Tigers, artillery batteries and Black Tiger commandos, has devastated the Sri Lanka Air Force (SLAF) and Sri Lanka Army (SLA) installations inside the Vanni Sri Lankan forces Headquarters, according to an informed military source in Vavuniyaa. According to officials figures, 11 Sri Lankan military and police personnel were killed and 33 wounded, including two Indian radar operators. Six civilians were also admitted at Vavuniyaa hospital with injuries.

The Air Tigers launched the attack first, targeting the Sri Lankan airbase. After the Tiger bombers returned, their artillery bombs targeted the military facility, prompting the military personnel to seek bunkers.

Then the Black Tiger commandos entered the base, making use of the time, and engaged in 'calculated destruction' to the facilities inside the Vanni SF HQ, according to the Vavuniyaa source.

15 SLA, 9 police and 7 air force personnel with injuries were handed over to civil hospitals and 9 of them were admitted to Vavuniyaa hospital. Two Indian radar operators were earlier airlifted to Colombo.

The LTTE is yet to release details of the military operation.

Thambapanniya said...

this attack is almost day apart. I am wondering this is linked to the the previous TAF mission?

perhaps it was the secondary objective/hidden objective to probe where the Radars were?

Zlins were called in solely to take out the indra radars? Personally if it was me and I infiltrated the base I would have given the artillery co-ordinates for the radar because things are easier and quicker that way.... unless artilerry is out of range?

MrBrown said...

It one Zlin was shot down..there is unlikely the other one got away. Soon after one was shot down , there is real possibilty for the Mig29 pilots to chase the other one provided that only one Mig29 was in action. and the incident took place not very far from 59Bri FDL and there was plenty of time to spot the other one. and again there were atleast more than 2 Mig were in action. Since the two TAF was spot on the radar same time it is likely that they were flying very close to each other.

yes they seem to be obsessed with trenches, seems that's the only way to save their skins.

as per DW - ltte has extended its trenchline spanning Nachchikuda through Vannerikulam towards Kilinochchi by adding another 7kms of trenches.

a new trenchline from Thannimurippu (Tank) north to Nayaru is also being built.

one would agree when you say SLA cannot use the same tactics at every trench, it's just naive to think or say so.

SLA has breached the Nachchikuda trench at Nachchikuda and 5 other points means they are now adept and up to ltte' new tricks,so more things to come in the near future.

tigers worst case scenario
==========================
1-main objective failed.
2-black tiger suicide team sacrificed for an equal no of sldf personnel.ie-embarassingly low effectiveness of their crack forces.
3-tigers main psychological edge provided by the indestructible TAF illusion goes up in smoke.
4-they lose a Zlin!

Absolutely we should be on our feets untill it gets repaired.

Defencewire,

It is hard to believe the story of shooting down the light aircraft until you provide sufficient evidence. All the bloggers here doing the assumptions based on the news from various sources they trust.

The strange way of expressing this attack by the Tamilnet is the only reason that we can believe this story.

Still they failed to give a proper idea about the safely return of this Zlins.

The best evidence I can give you is Tamilnet report. They are not denying they lost a aircraft. And if you remember how they reported last Trinco atttack they told "The aircrafts safely returned to their base after carrying out their mission".But this time there is nothing like that.:)

I do not believe following, Can you show me the place and time to visit, so I can find the evidence to full fill my unbelievable points.

1) Praba is live
2) LTTE has aero planes
3) Ltte has intelligent units
4) Black tigers getting trained

i want you to prove that a few of my doubts are not true as well.

i have been told and i believe that

a). Rasiah Ilanthirayan has been killed on pottu's orders.

b). VP is not in vanni

c). vp only gets children and families of other people to fight but has taken his family to safety and confor of europe

d). ltte has child cadres

Good to hear SLAF destroy LTTE plane... but that would be great if SLAF could detect and intercept the aircraft before reach the target. If LTTE terrorist came for suicide mission we do not have anything to celebrate.

Since their landmass shrinking, soon these primitive attack crafts will be useless other than use for a suicide mission.
Since hitting a military target they could not stop or slow down current operation, I think that will be very important place or person.

Key to intercept any aircraft is good early warning system. Indra radar gives only last minute warning, not good enough.

We would like a damage report..

Guys I agree with you all about your opinion.

But what my mind say is, MCNS have some evidence to prove this story, but they do not release it until Pro-LTTE media claim all the LTTE plans were safely returned.

We will have wait and see.

1.LTTE : I think by Tiger standards this op was a failure--usually black tigers have a history of disproportionately high damage.

2.SLDF:It was an intelligence failure. Also going by the number of casualties(which is often understated as in T,Malee) I suspect material damage has been not light.

3.SLAF: I would take its claim of airkill at 50:50 for it is your word vs mine. Deefnce.lk simply said TAF plane was " grounded ".

We cannot afford to wait with out claiming what we have achived. How often Pro-LTTE media claimed lost towards LTTE?
Else story gona look like those terrorists came to our door step and went unhalm.

one can be very pessimistic when it comes to SLDF/SLAF gains. the same people wouldn't query or bat an eyelid when crediting the ltte with a victory 'based on one word' not your or mine but tamilnet.

'your word vs. mine' SLAF could then have made similar claims all six times ZLINS flew, they didn't because nothing was shot down. simple as that. yesterday one was shot down ,hence the claim. if it's a false claim SLAF can simply claim both ZLINS.

..MCNS have some evidence to prove this story....

yet again the same hypocrisy and you sound holier than thou all of a sudden. all of you simply accept claims by tamilnet, puthinam or any other..however flimsy they may sound, but seek prrof whenever defence.lk or MCNS makes a claim.

of course the above is a rhetorical overstatement by you, but yes, there's an element of truth in it. Both opposing sources you quote are propaganda outlets, but the number of gaffes made by MoD outlets far outstrips TN .So its not that TN is better, but that MoD is worse;))

The SLAF didn't have the same level of pressure to perform in the past attacks. It built up over the past few and reached peak over the Trinco attack last week.

At this point, there is real reason and need to show results. I am not promoting one theory or another, but those who wish to wait for further proof before believing what is being claimed about a shoot down aren't being unpatriotic, but simply realistic.
