battlefield progress

Heavy fighting was reported from Chilawatte as 59 Division engaged the LTTE yesterday. 7 soldiers were killed and another 70 injured in the fighting. LTTE is concentrating its forces to the east of the Mulaitivu Lagoon. The strategy will be to travel from the west of the lagoon to the east.

Heavy fighting was also reported south of Iranamadu, at Ampakamam north in the last few days as Task Force 3 under Brigadier Liyanage headed into LTTE areas. 10 LTTE cadres were confirmed killed in the attack while some Charles Anthony, Imran Pandian, Malathi unit cadres have started abandoning their posts and escaping the LTTE along with their civilian captives.

While some LTTE teams in Mulaitivu still engage in the failed bund/trench defense system to stop an army, which became outdated in World War I, LTTE units east of Kilinochchi, who learnt their lesson the hard war from the 57 and the 58, have started deploying small teams for hit and run operations, particularly at Vattakachchi.

Troops advancing on Vishvamadu and about 7km away from their target while resistance in the general area north of Paranthan has gradually diminished as troops reach Chundikulam (Sundikulam).

What SLDF should focus is not to let LTTE build another Muhammalai.

SLAF should carry out precision sorties (with the help of UAVs) 24 hours a day preventing any defence fortification building by LTTE.

Something that really intrigues me is we are not finding LTTE weapon hauls.

1. Either we are not doing a good job
2. They have withdrawn all to their now Bikini Size Peelam

Recovered aircraft wreckage belonged to SLAF

The air force said that the aircraft wreckage which was recovered closer to the LTTE’s 6th airstrip in the east of Iranamadu tank on Sunday belonged to them. The aircraft had crashed into the area several years ago.
(From Daily Mirror)

I think LTTE used this wreck for flying lessons...
Few got into it… some may be hanging around .. (like our private bus conductors) and one might be the pilot.. then they make noises…. Broooom broooom… peek peek... mmmmmmmmmmm…. Putu putu putu…

May be took some pictures for souvenirs.. ! with “V” sign and gun in the other hand..!

an oil dump in a 'luxuriant coconut grove'? - interesting.

the pudukuruppu hospital when captured will reveal the scale of LTTE casualties hidden from propaganda. my guess is they will fight like hell for this patch. perhaps this is where they will try to make a stand finally.

also lets not get obsessed with the size of the reducing area. SIZE is secondary - what matters is maintaining attrition and reducing the strength next to nothing.

moshe,

that makes sense. for some reason they have picked the area between kili and mula as a logistics base. you would think mula would have been a better choice. i guess the dense jungle and access to oddusudan and welioya-trinco would have been easier from pudurukuupu than mula. the population would have also been much smaller thus easier to have high security zones.

Rana said...

Panhinda,

Present eelam shape roughly like an oval and is good for offensive battles with 1:10 troops ratio. In contrast SLDF shape is good only for defensive battles unless we employ lot more soldiers. What SLDF should do is turn areas with fierce battle into defensive mode and select one or two weak points to pierce the egg shape aiming at dividing eelam into two. Then the progress and killing rate can be improved. Initially, it is difficult but dividends will come later.

Well, What do you think?

Jambudipa said...

rana,

the convergence of divisions into a small area does provide opportunities also challenges. coordinating divisions and groups so that no one gets caught in friendly fire is importnat. therefore we need some stratergy so that we do not crowd the area and steppig on each others toes.

if im no mistaken what you are tring to say is this. maintain a perimeter with the bulk of troops. the perimeter will guard against LTTE leakage into other areas. then send in small teams in and out on harvesting missions. the small teams divide the area into sectors and operate those area only. the LTTE is then forced to fight in multiple fronts thus diving their strength into fragments.

if this is what you imply then yes i agree with you.

Rana said...

Panhinda,

Oh, I haven’t put it correctly! What you said is only a part of the plan.

First divide present eelam area into two strategic parts. Then send small teams to do the harvesting into either side. While harvesting is going on lead a major offensive to pierce the shape giving flank support to small attack teams. Wise versa small attack teams will protect both flanks of the major battle formation.

yes i agree. also lets bear in mind it better to send forward a column of troops to destroy strong points within the territory. for example the HQ in puduruppu. however if there are no significant strong points and their strength is scattered throughout the area, rely more on small team ops only.

The news is that civllians are very worried and are starting to agitate for the release of their kids in LTTE custody. Apparently there's serious trouble brewing among the rank and file as the story abt Velu possibly having left them to fight to the death gains momentum.

Moshe/Rana/Panhinda;

In the current context it seems that taking over of upper side of the Mula lagoon as no 1. What I mean is some joint operation which skips most of A35, Puthu and surroundings. I think 58th can skip A35 and move eastward [A35 goes S-E] from Dharmapuram whereas 59th [593] and 55th can join them at shore.

It should effectively break the region into three.

1. Pallai and surroundings
2. Mula stretch
3. Puthu and the major region

Advantages.

- That will keep them in dilemma whether to stay in 1/2 and get stranded or fight to death in the major region.

- Withdrawal from 1/2 cost them shore.

- Staying in 1/2 cost them definite annihilation.

- Most of their guns seem to be in 1/2 whereas most of cadres and "livestock" [IDP] is in 3. So in either case it will be a loss to them.

- Since we concentrate more on shore, lesser civilian trouble.

- Since we fight at periphery they will put lesser attention. And the attack should happen in the back of a major thrust by TF2/TF3/TF4/53rd in order to make them busy.

- Fatpig may panic and get caught is a rash fleeing attempt.

- 57th should continue slow but steady eastward move which should be sweeping the region 3, and they should think on how they can rescue civilians in the process.

Note that this plan involves thin stretches which WAS risky, but with shrinking land there is no way that we avoid thin stretches now.

Regarding civilians, I don;t think there will be an effective way, but as the region shrinks [and as Moshe says density rises] and there will be a point that they find civilians are hindrance to them too. By that moment civilians will also find that fleeing ordeal is now not that bad as distance for safety is shorter. We should make 57th the side which allows them to flee, hence 57th should go gently.

I think Fatpig is still in SL and strongly believe he's in Mula, but his departure can be planned however much we put shields. A human cannot be blocked where weapons are smuggled. How can SLN scan every fishing boat? But if we take teh node that I mentioned, he'll feel the heat and may rush into a rash flee which can be detected.

Rana said...

Rana;

Agree on few defects, but let me point out few more on that.

59 cannot advance in west of the lagoon stretch. See what happned at Chilawatta.

As far as the news is concerned, they have already done that and they have surpassed A35. So I believe they can continue for another 20km w/o big issue.

If 58 go too deep as a strong forward column to east they become vulnerable.

Even now 58th si vulnerable. But moving alone A35 maked them more so as they are leaving a gap from them to Kilali/Chundikulam lagoon.

55 is not moving anymore suggests,

See the end of two districts Jaffna and Mula. There is a lagoon which borders them and us. This is where the two big boats of pussycats were sunk, I suppose. And from that point road from Chundikulam to mainland turns westward ad moves inland.

I think 55th still can move inland and provide the much needed cover for 58th. When I saw the videos of "Uthuru Yudha Peramuna" I realized why 53/55 are called "best" divisions - the firepower.

tigers keep their heavy guns to guard 58, 55 and 57 all.

With shrinking region, heavy guns can threaten anyone. But the most important fact is that guns are not yet properly positioned or calibrated. And they are still likely to be around shore mostly. One point of attacking shore soon is to further destablish guns.

The best solution is TF3 and TF2 piercing the egg shape as I previously suggested.

This is another option. I think this should be started as we get to a good point in the operation which I mentioned. In fact the pragmatic facts would decide which one will be the first success.

But note that THIS will be the mother of all battles. It will be very heavy and it is exactly the final battle they expect. I believe we ought to make a strategic disruption like breaking into several pieces, and mental debate of choosing which option before we take on this.

We shouldn't allow them to freely take on TF3/53rd/TF2/TF4.

Or amphibious landing at west to Mula lagoon in the night but unlikely SLN will do that.

Rana, I'm with the impression that 593 already liberated most of west side of Mula lagoon. Amp.landing is not yet the best practice for SLN. Firstly we need some equivalent of US Marine. Secondly it suits for wars with bigger regions like countries, but not a heavily guarded tiny region while enemy expects you. Day or night such operations cannot be conducted in secrecy.

BTW, I should say I'm bound to be wrong.

Sea Tigers Last Stand Yet To Come

I believe the recent battle between the SLN and Sea Tigers offshore Mullaitivu is a precursor to a breakout by all seaworthy Sea Tiger vessels in the immediate future. I think this was a sortie to test the strength, the reactions, and the dispositions of the SLN units blockading Mullaitivu, in particular, and the residual East Coast, in general.

The next attempt by the Sea Tigers will utilize the information they acquired in this battle. I predict something like this: Three flotillas of the Sea Tigers will attempt a breakout. Of these three units, two will be attack/suicide units to divert SLN boats while one flotilla, the "escape flotilla" will makes a run either for Tamil Nadu, or for the Andaman Islands off Thailand. The escape flotilla may also plan to rendezvous with a ship in the Bay of Bengal.

Thus, the escape flotilla is likely to include the largest and fastest Sea Tiger boats that have a larger range, and can handle rough deep water sea climates. It is possible that some of the boats will be used purely to carry extra fuel for the boats that are scheduled to travel the greatest distances; the fuel tanker boats will be abandoned as the fuel is transferred out.

The two attack/suicide flotillas will try to draw away and destroy the larger SLN ships/FACs capable of deep sea operations. These are likely to be the smaller faster low-profile Sea Tiger attack and suicide boats.

These attack/suicide flotillas and the escape flotilla may start from very different locations at different times to provide the best opportunity for the escape flotilla to achieve its goal.

My speculations here are predicated on the assumption that VP and other top leaders are still in Sri Lanka and want to escape. If not, then there will be only the attack/suicide flotillas making their last stand at sea, before it becomes impossible for them to put to sea from secured ports. That day is fast approaching.

Navy thwarts LTTE Attempt to get away and destroys 04 LTTE Boats - off Mullaithivu

Sri Lanka Navy thwarted an LTTE attempt to get away and destroyed four (04) LTTE boats during a fierce gun battle that erupted off the coast of Mullaithivu around 11.30 p.m. yesterday (19th January).

The Navy's Fast Attack Craft (FACs) intercepted a flotilla of LTTE Sea Tiger boats launched from Mullaithivu which were attempting to get away and engaged them destroying four (04) LTTE boats forcing the enemy to retreat and abandon the mission.

One SLN FAC sustained damages due to an explosion of an LTTE suicide boat close by.

Sri Lanka Navy maintains four (04) defence barriers off the coast of Mullaithivu consisting of more than twenty-five (25) Fast Attack Craft (FACs), Offshore Patrol Vessels (OPVs), Gun Boats, the Rapid Action Boat Squadron (RABS) and the Special Boat Squadron (SBS) to cut off the escape of LTTE cadres by sea and to prevent the unloading of warlike materials on the North-eastern coast.

Patriots,

President Mahinda Rajapakse requests Sri Lanka Consuls abroad to speak on behalf of our country to inform the world of its progress towards extending democratic rights to all regions of Sri Lanka.

In a small way, we too are working towards that same cause here at this blog.

Here is an excerpt of his address in the Parliament:

Inform the world of our progress to democracy - President to Sri Lanka Consuls

"It is time for you to inform the world of the progress we are making towards restoring democracy and freedom in the north, and counter the ill informed charges being made about the plight of the innocent Tamil people there," said President Mahinda Rajapaksa addressing Sri Lanka's Honorary Consuls abroad at a special meeting and working session for them organized by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Addressing the Hony. Consuls at the Presidential Secretariat today (19), the President said: "It is your special task to make it known that the sufferings of the Tamil people in the north are those imposed by the LTTE who falsely claim to be their liberators, but are in fact their biggest oppressors."

"People in your respective countries must know that these innocent Tamil people are held hostage for use as a human shield to safeguard terrorist leaders from the humanitarian forces of liberation and freedom, the heroic Sri Lankan troops. The world must know through you that the Dawn of a New Spring of freedom and development awaits the north of Sri Lanka," President Rajapaksa added.

Referring to the current economic situation the President said: "Our economic indicators display a robust economy that has been able to withstand the on-going global financial crisis relatively well. We stress on taking care of vulnerable groups such as those with disabilities, orphans, the elderly and poorer segments of society who are provided with social safety nets to assure their basic well-being. We encourage the private sector as the engine of growth for our economy and endeavour to build a healthy economic and social relationship between the private sector and public services.

The biggest challenge we face in achieving our full potential in terms of economic and social well-being and prosperity has been the realization of peace. Every government in Sri Lanka during the last three decades or so has made many efforts to achieve peace with the LTTE, a ruthless and heavily armed terrorist group which has been banned in several countries including the USA, UK, India, Canada, and the European Union. All efforts at achieving peace with the LTTE however, failed, with the terrorist group continuously resorting to violence."

Girlfriend Upgrade

Dear Tech Support:
Two years ago I upgraded Girlfriend version 3.0 to Wife 1.0 and noticed that the new program began unexpected child processing that took up a lot of space and valuable resources. No mention of this phenomenon was included in the product brochure. In addition, Wife 1.0 installs itself into all other programs and launches during system initialization where it monitors all other system activity. Applications such as Poker-night 4.0, Rugby on Friday 3.0 and Beer-bash 2.2 no longer run, crashing the system whenever selected. I cannot seem to purge Wife 1.0 from my system. I am thinking about going back to Girlfriend 2.0 but uninstall does not work on this program. Can you help me?

From Tech Support, Dear Sir,

This is a very common problem men complain about but is mostly due to a primary misconception. Many people upgrade from Girlfriend package to Wife version with the idea that Wife 1.0 is merely a "FUN & ENTERTAINMENT" program. Wife 1.0 is an OPERATING SYSTEM and designed by its creator to run everything itself. It is impossible to
uninstall, delete, or purge the program from the system once installed. You cannot go back to Girlfriend version because Wife is not designed to do this. Some have tried to install latest version of Girlfriend or Wife 2.0 but end up with more problems than the original system. Look in your manual under Warnings - Alimony / Child Support etc. I recommend you keep Wife 1.0 and just deal with the situation.
Having Wife 1.0 installed myself, I might also suggest you read the entire section regarding General Protection Faults (GPFs). You must assume all responsibility for faults and problems that might occur. The best course of action will be to push apologize button then reset button as soon as lock-up occurs. System will run smooth as long
as you take the blame for all GPFs. Wife 1.0 is a great program but is very costly to maintain.

Final Conclusion,

Do not upgrade your girl friend version to wife unless you want more troubles!

Patriots, take a look at this video re. the discovery of the LTTE plundered oil drums:

http://www.youtube.com/user/lkwebnews

You will see (and hear) how cleverly the LTTE tried to hide these drums…they took great pains to do so with good camouflage, so that one day they can come and retrieve the precious loot…

However, here’s where the bloody KICKER comes in…

Around the video count 2:54 you will see that the whores forgot to take off the markings on the coconut trees pointing to where the oil drums are buried (with an arrow to the exact location and the number of drums buried at that spot)!!!

Wow! Wow indeed!

LTTE can’t take injured cadres: Karuna

The LTTE will be compelled to leave behind more than 2,000 of its injured cadres being treated at the Thevipuram Hospital in Pudukuduiruppu when the security forces move into the area, TMVP parliamentarian Vinayagamurthy Muralitharan alias Karuna Amman said yesterday.

Mr. Muralitharan quoted civilians fleeing the fighting in Mullaitivu as having said that in the present circumstances the beleaguered LTTE would not be in a position to take its injured further into the jungle.

“The Tigers will abandon their injured cadres when fleeing in the face of the advancing troops. With the fall of Ramanathapuram, the fall of remaining LTTE strongholds such as Viswamadu is imminent. We can expect the total eradication of terrorism soon,” Mr. Muralitharan said.

My Comment at ExpressBuzz.com

On British Legacy in India and Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka, like India, was held in colonial bondage, and exploited economically, by the British. As V.Mehta says, we won independence from Britain only because Britain was weakened by WW-II and had lost its national will to fight to retain these colonies as Winston Churchill , who declared "I will not preside over the dissolution of the British Empire", wanted. Britian promoted the development of our countries only to the extent that served their own exploitative needs. On the other hand, the British were the most rational and decent of European colonialists. Furthermore, in India's case, they united the warring princely states of India for the first time since Dharma-Asoka, and left an intact administrative system in place without waging war on the people as the French did in Vietnam.

Re: SL Cricket [with Defence touch like AmmaGG did]

Whatever was wrong with SLDF in late 90s seem to haunt SL Cricket. They are almost the same team which was illegally beaten in last WC final. But now they ended up being minnow bashees [bashed by minnows]. Past 8 ODI were against minnows but almost all were die-hard battles like K-M-N line. Finally Murali was called from down the order like 58th from down again.

It all suggests me that the prob is not in skill but leadership, management and guidance, just like
SLDF of late 90s.

Some Cricket insiders stated that once money started flowing SLC Board became greedy's plate and they never supported school cricket [as they never knew what SL cricket system is all about]. Money started flowing around 97/98. Last recognized quality batters of our team [bar Kapugedera] came out of school just before that [MJ, KC, TMD, TS et al]. After that we have groomed few survivors-due-to-lack-of-competition like Muba [Moo Barak as I call him] Tharanga et al. These lads show not much quality, but just their ability to duck under opponent's MBRL.

And as long as SL continues being attempted minnow basher turned bashee nothing can improve them. We ought to play quality teams and limit our exposure to bad teams.

BTW following statement from MJ was almost as close as Thirumavalan to be the joke of the week.

"Our batsmen need to be consistent" -MJ

Hell they are. Bloody idiots have been consistently making single figure scores in past 8 odd ODIs against below par teams.

If you have any inconsistent performer it is SJ, who makes some big score from time to time. Maybe you drop him.

SLC Team is saved from public wrath by SLDF these days. Maybe the return for the reverse support given in late 90s by then SLC team.

All right. Ape Kollanta Jaya Wewa, both in Wanni and in Pakistan.

You are right and I agree with you 100%.

I was only referring to his statement about "genocide" and nothing else (as he spoke the honest truth about that as we all agree).

Do we let our guard down with this or any other "Racist Federalist" bugger for that matter? I say a resounding NO! to that!

Let me explain my sentiments vis-à-vis this issue as follows:

Once I remember reading about an African tribe, which to get rid of a certain poisonous snake infestation in their tribal area, they would go into the deep woods and catch a couple of equally poisonous snakes and release them in their lands as the "deep-woods snake" was very territorial minded and ended up killing virtually all of the 1st kind of poisonous snakes in no time...and then when that was done, the tribesmen would let the deep-woods snakes just be for awhile (as an insurance policy) and then eventually the deep-woods snakes would die on their own as they were out of their natural habitat (and additionally, the deep-woods snakes have a much longer breeding cycle compared to the 1st kind and as such, time was favorable on the tribesmen's side)...IF however, the few deep-woods snakes got to be too problematic, then tribesman had no choice but to quickly hunt and kill the deep-woods snakes too!

I trust this parable explains well enough my sentiments in this regard...

Take care bro…

Cheers,

Dear Apino,

The wreckage that is found seems to be that of Pukara, as you, MZ and others have already figured out. But SLAF would already know, as there were some numbers clearly visible, on the footage that we saw.

The helicopter seems to be just a model. Look at especially the main rotor axle, it is way too flimsy to carry the weight of the structure below.

If this is just a model, they may have made it perhaps to mislead the LTTE diaspora/civilians about a non-existent military strength or to mislead SLDF/GSL. They also could have used it for target practicing for an attack on one of our bases.

However, they have put in a lot of effort into making an intricate cage for it, and this makes me wonder if they were trying to experiment.

You are correct in your assertion that the blog has turned into a cesspit. Thanks for your kindness.

Regarding DW updates, it seems they are shackled from giving us too much information, which is too bad. They were doing a better job even than MOD folks in giving highly readable, accurate account of events. Hope DW folks will be invited to do the MOD updates! which would be nice given that it is the most accessed portal for SL defense news.

Agree with this. Not good, but the Navy was responsible for LTTE unloading ammo in late Dec. But now, I think everybody is getting on fine.

"his above comment MAY BE a punch on the face of the SLN commander."

Could be, but also it may be, given that LTTE is built around the concept of the "invincible demigod of the Tamil people", the commander perhaps is trying to highlight VP as a chicken who runs for his life, when all other around him (including the civilians) are heavily sacrificing. This perhaps, our people are thinking, would hasten the collapse of the LTTE.

US Blacks Vs SL Tamils.

Tomorrow is a very exciting day for US blacks when Obama takes the Oath as the first African American President.

Blacks in US is already celebrating that event.

US blacks started out with nothing and ended up one becoming the head of the most powerful nation in the world.

Their success is mainly due to none violence path preached by MLK.

SL Tamils on the other hand were the people with Silver spoon in their mouth when British left. Since then they saw that Silver spoon becoming a plastic one.

Their demise is not following a none violence path.

Both communities fought hard for equality in their countries. However equality has different meaning between Blacks an Tamils.

For Blacks, it is the acceptance.
For Tamils, it is 50:50.

When you ask for something you don't deserve, you will have to end up digging the ground and making holes.

When you ask for something you deserve, you may end up becoming the head of a state.

The wreck of the aircraft is a SLAF Bell helicopter. See the discussion on the Kfir thread on LNP. They have identified it from the number as the one that crashed while carrying Ratwatte and was later destroyed. I didn't see the the first two initials myself on the video that I saw but the numericals were visible, so can be easily verified.

The propellor he's holding in the video is definitely the tail rotor of a helicopter like a Bell. Its too small and the wrong shape to be the propellor from a turbo prop like a Pucara.

The engines on a helicopter also look like the one you saw in the video.

It doesn't look like a jet engine to me. They're much bigger for one thing. Its more consistent with the turboshaft type engines you see on helicopters than the turbojets on our fighters. For example, this is what the J-79 engine on a Kfir looks like.

The engine in the video looks more like one of these.

Your own article states that the Swiss militia system, which you want SL to emulate, specifically relies on a heavily-decentralized system where military initiative rests at the local, not central level. Among other things, your article praised the Swiss system for having a weak President who lacks the authority to order a surrender. Don't try backtracking now.

And you didn't answer my question to Rover: how will a 500,000-man SLA stop an Indian air strike????

What is revealing about sf-3.blogspot.com is how fake "defense intellectuals" get exposed for their lack of substantial knowledge on that site. Mushe Dyan has taken a real beating there, like when he gave the truly moronic suggestion that suicidal youth should join the SLA (Long Ranger did not demean himself by responding to that one!):

SL has a very high suicide rate. according to GOSL stats, about 6,600 ppl a year. WHO puts it double that number. >55 are the bulk and men are the majority.

why not we get them to the SLA to perform HIGHLY dangerous work???

Responses from other bloggers:

Su-33: This will crucify you as the joke of the Lankan blogger community. No offense to the ranger but his slow output of posts means your idiocy will be pinned over here for everyone to see the GENERAL in action heehee

Bomb Jack: Oh LAWD! Did Chief Moshe really say that? haha

Quick someone delete it. The infidel fanatics might borrow the idea. haha

NOLTTE=Peace (a more sympathetic comment): It looks like this post about 'suicide' is a 'monumental mistake' he has made owing to some temporary lack of judgment. It is totally out of his character.

I believe that Moshe would be regretting about that comment.

Mushe: i had a fruitful discuccion with the LR, not with you or your sl_t mother!!! (Mushe does not react well to criticism!)

Sujeewa, My personal opinion also we should let VP to escape from the country and should take Pottu our side.

Reasons;
01. Even though we captured entire territory, there will be some LTTE operations can expect outside SL. So we can finish the LTTE international network with the help of pottu while asking IC support to capture VP.

02. A disappointment for Tamil diaspora; still pro-ltte people believe that VP never going to escape from the county let alone his people in Vanni. "VP is always with a person who is with a oil can and ready to fire him when he ordered". lol

(the second reason is not productive since diaspora change their opinion time to time.)

Rana said...

Guys,

SF's comment about VP has fled is more about discrediting the bastard locally and internationally, by doing so make him stay until he get his chance.

Also he is trying to please himself by believing the worst will not happen.

I would have done the same, if I am in his shoes!

Anyone heard of some bad news off coast Mula. Today seem to be a little harsh. Anyway when you put a blockade, it is hardly unexpected that it won't be battered.

This again proves that we need to settle the matters of shore soon. And capture of nothern tip of that Mula lagoon seems even more important.

Why are we going on about matching india with Military might?

It's foolhardy to say the least.

If ever we have to have an armed conflict with India we will have to go underground and fight a guerilla war and only if India instigates it.

Engille tharamata idimemu.

We are not in Sinhala Rajakale where the ground situations were different where there was no united India and no advanced technology.

I make a kind request to be pragmatic and discuss something that will be useful.

This will be my last post on this subject.

Rana said...

Thambla,

Exactly, I have said the same about matching India in defence couple of weeks ago.

It is logical not even try it but there are less expensive alternative realistic solutions to possible threat from Tamil Naadu or India as a whole.

B#1,

Sorry mate, I can't agree. We should not let vesapille escape. We should not compromise with Pottu.

I will never agree to compromise with these two. Top two must be killed, not once but ten times slow roasting death.

Even Karuna who used to hack innocent sinhala villagers in the east must be killed at the end.

If you compromise with terrorists for military or political advantage, you are betraying your self to what you are fighting against.

This is not a Bell helicopter i feel. The Bell SLAF got, doesn't have landing gears fitted with wheels. SLAF got Bell jet rangers,205,212 and 421's only. all are fitted with skiding type landing plates. So the landing gear in the video doesn't match for Bell helicopters.
Pukara and Aermechchi is fitted with torbo prop engines. All propeller aircrafts are not piston engine driven. Those are turbo engine aircrafts. The engine in video similar to the turbo prop engine.
That wreckage is not a helicopter.

[Why are we going on about matching india with Military might?]

1. I don't think we can ever match India 1:1 in military might, but like many other small countries in recorded history, we can make it very unpalatable to India, or a sub-national group within the former Indian Union, to interfere in Sri Lanka. I have written at length in 15 or more posts about this, giving examples of other small countries that have fended off large neighboring enemies and have successfully preserved their independence and security. India cannot deploy all of its forces in one war theatre; it has to confront many enemies. We just have to make a judgment on how much we need for our theatre, and develop regional alliances to make sure that all of India's might cannot be brought to bear on us. I hope that we can remain India's friend for all time and will never need to defend against India, but we must be prepared to do so if we have to; we were not prepared in the last 30 years and were blackmailed into submission. We must motivate FRIENDSHIP through STRENGTH; WEAKNESS invites AGGRESSION.

2. The reason why we need to do that is because we have no control over India's internal politics and policies towards Sri Lanka. Also, India is very unstable right now with many separatist movements; it may breakup in the future. We may then have to confront a smaller newly independent country called Tamil Nadu.

3. As we have seen in the last 30 years, it takes a MANY DECADES to motivate the citizenry and develop an adequate defense force. It is all about DETERRENCE. If we wait to close the barn door after the horse has been stolen again, Sri Lanka may not survive as an independent country. We have to analyze our security needs and potential enemies and MAINTAIN an adequate strong defense force. An ounce of PREVENTION is worth much more than a pound of CURE.

4. This debate has been going on at this blog for over a year; please go back and read the relevant posts, if you have not already.

Mr Rana,

I agree with you. But I didn't meant to compromise with pottu. As moshe said this is a cancer treatment that we do. And we expect 100% recovery. You should agree with me that LTTE is very strong outside SL.

This war will be over soon. But we will have to invest maximum on "Military Intelligence". In this case pottu is a key factor if he is in our hand. Pottu is a single person and he knows what is his end.

shay said...

Gotymbara,

I'm not talking about the crude mock up/air frame of a helicopter. That is something the LTTE have constructed themselves with various aircraft parts and scrap metal etc, god only knows what for.

I'm talking about the first wreckage that was shown with the SLAF indentification numbers and the propellor (a tail rotor). The engines can be turboshafts or turboprops. Since the site had a collection of aircraft related material including the casings of SLAF bombs, the engines they showed don't necessarily need to be from the same wreck. It can be from a different wreck of a pucara or somethign as you say. However, its definitely not a turbojet engine.

B#1 said...

Only thing I can say is that Pussycats managed to sink a FAC (no SLN deaths). It was salvaged but is beyond repairable condition. Intel believes they were trying to smuggle someone out (not VP) or bring something in. Pussy cats failed to pierce Naval Blockade.

well said. agree 100%. we must make ourselves so strong that we must be in a position TO HELP INDIA PROTECT IT'S BORDER FROM FUTURE NADU INSURGENCIES. WE MUST MAKE OURSELVES AN INDISPENSABLE ALLY TO INDIA.

whether india will ever request our help or not is immaterial.

BUT OUR VISION MUST BE TO GET THERE. WE GOT NO OTHER CHOICE.

personally I hate indians for the sheer cruelty & mayhem let loose upon us for the past 30 years. I don think any other UN recognized country has ever done to one of it's small neighbours what india has done to sri lanka for 30 long murderous years.

but personal sentiments have never had any place in geo- politics. today's friend can easily be tomorrow's enemy.

best example is how india's relations kept changing towards sri lanka after independemce from

1] pro sri lanka,(indira handed katchathivu over free to sirimao)
2] anti sri lanka (same indira trained LTTE)
3] then again 50% pro (peace treaty forced on LTTE 1987),
4] then neutral (after rajiv became minced meat)
5] now again pro. (India has no choice, the best scenario for sri lanka)

after condemning India for promoting LTTE i must also admit that India in a magnificient gesture of friendship handed over katchathivu FREE to us. It shows how sirimavo was respected as a genuine friend by indira as against JR & UNP.

Looking back at our long history it's amazing that we survived at all. it speaks volumes for our survival instinct. it's a miracle that tamil invaders failed for 2,500 years although they outnumbered us. sinhala civilisation must be one of the greatest survival stories in the history of human civilisation. either we're extremely smart or tamil invaders were extremely dumb. only a handful of nations have a 2,500 year old recorded history intact.

but it was our military weaknesses that indira exploited this time + a personal grudge with JR , foul mouth premadasa & UNP. (with a good dose of jealousy added).

now we must make india know in no uncertain terms that we will align ourselves with china & pakistan VERY STRONGLY if india doesn't reform it's predatory approach to us.

I think MR, gota & sarath are doing a fine job on that. india has got the message.

so now's the time to take the strong sri lanka policy forward & make ourselves a strong, vibrant & great country.

Strike while the iron's hot.

shay,

You go through the video again. If you watch it carefully along with the wreckage you can see a langing gear lying on the ground, but wheels are not attached.I am talking about that. One engine is away from the wreckage. But other one is just under the broken wing. As you say if they broght engines closer to the wreckage,My feeling is that tail rotor much easier to bring from somewhere.
There are few types of turbo engines in the aviation world. Most commons are
Turbo Fan
Turbo shaft
Turbo prop.

Turbine engines are used for power satation generators and on the ships also.vaccum cleaners, formula cars also turbo engine driven. !!!!!!

I am not talking about the crude mokup made by lttp to do some practice sessions. The landing gear i am talking about just the second item after the frame.the shape of the wreckage more closer to the high speed jets which req more aerodynamics. its not bulky like Bell 412 which crashed clser to mulative jungle with Ratwatte on board. That was totally destroyrd by SLAF those days.

I still feel this not a helicopter.I know what i am talking about.Last 23 years i am with these beauties, now as an aircraft maint engineer.I can figureout the airframes and engines.

Illegal Sri Lankan migrants deported

Jan 19, 2009 (LBO) - Britain has started deporting illegal Sri Lankan migrants with the first batch sent back by charter flight on January 15 at the island international airport, the British High Commission said.
It said in a statement that the UK and Sri Lankan governments have struck a deal to send back illegal migrants on a regular basis on charter flights. "The British Government and the Government of Sri Lanka have an ongoing agreement to facilitate the return of Sri Lankan nationals who have remained unlawfully in the UK," it said. The first charter flight of Sri Lankan returnees, who were deported last week marks the start of what is hoped will be an ongoing programme of repatriation, it said.

The High Commission said the Sri Lankan government "was instrumental" in ensuring the flight took place. The agreement also "supports the UK Border Agency policy to detect, detain and remove those who have unlawfully entered the UK or pose a threat." The British high commission statement did not say who the returnees were.

Hundreds of Sri Lankans, especially minority Tamils, are known to have entered Britain illegally and are living and working there. It said in a statement that the UK and Sri Lankan governments have struck a deal to send back illegal migrants on a regular programme of charter flights.
