Full extent of LTTE Puthukudirippu attack

The full extent of an LTTE plan and series of coordinated attacks at Puthukudirippu has come to light. The attack, which started as an infiltration on January 31st, went on till the Independence Day on 4th February. The objective of the LTTE was to push the Army back to Oddusudan. We have now fully pieced together the exact extent of the various attacks that took place during this period, particularly from the 2nd to the 4th of February.

On 31st January, a small 30-man LTTE team belly-crawled through a muddy lagoon in the Nanthi Kandal lagoon undetected by 59 Division sentries. The muddy lagoon was almost impassable and was hence largely unmanned. LTTE teams, well versed in the area having operated in the area themselves, took maximum advantage of their knowledge of the terrain.

The team infiltrated the SLA dominated area a few kilometers. Fortunately for them and rather unfortunately for the army, 3 bus loads of unsuspecting soldiers on leave who had just received their pay, were boarding the buses unarmed. The Tigers waited for the buses to move and blasted several powerful claymore mines while firing RPG-7s at the buses killing around 60 soldiers.

In another separate series of attacks, Tiger suicide bombers disguised as civilians approached the 59 Division FDL manned by 7 Gemunu Watch. The FDL was nothing but a series of checkpoints along the Puthukudirippu-Oddusudan road and former LTTE trench lines manned by small SLA teams. The suicide bombers detonated their lorry bombs killing the sentries instantly and immediately afterwards, wave after wave of Tigers started attacking 7 GW and the reinforcements from TF-4.

At the same time, trucks mounted with 30mm canons forced their way along the road towards TF-4 dominated areas. The Tiger plan was to recapture Mulaitivu and raise the Eelam flag on 4th of February in defiance of the government's elaborate Independence Day celebrations on the same day.

But the Tigers' expectation of a complete military reversal never took place. 7 GW soldiers fought to the very end, with one soldier launching a suicide attack using a couple of Claymore mines strapped on to himself. The 59, which has only 3 committed Brigades, was immediately reinforced by the 57, which had 2 Brigades in the reserve. Additionally, the 57 Division Commander Maj. Gen. Jagath Chula Dias, perhaps the most respected Commander alongside Prasanna Silva, took over the reigns. The 53 Division was also brought in, which was placed in reserve since the recapture of Elephant Pass.

The fiercest attack came in waves particularly on the night of the 3rd. Tigers managed to capture 2 T-55 battle tanks, but were unable to take them away, so they destroyed it with RPGs. But by 2nd February, the 3 Special Forces, which was in reserve throughout the Vanni Humanitarian Operation, swung into action.

Special Forces teams infiltrated the area and launched deadly attacks while assisting normal infantry troops to hold the line from falling beyond 3kms from the original FDL. Over 1,000 LTTE cadres bore down upon them, but the unit held itself and all other units together as usual in heroic fashion.

The CO of the deployed Special Forces teams, a Major, led the counter-attack from the very front. An experienced SF captain and several other soldiers sacrificed their lives in the process. This was how the rest of the country was able to celebrate Independence Day 2009 with their head held high.

hey peops,

has anyone told Tamil nadu Tamils how their own people were ethincly cleansed by LTTE?

/*

Asian Tribune: You say about 10,000 families belonging to Tamils of Indian origin are ethnically cleansed by the LTTE and still languishing in the camps?

Furthermore, the Tamils of Indian origin who left the upcountry and settled down in Kilinochchi, Vavuniya and Mullaitivu were also chased out by the LTTE to Vavuniya and they are there in the camps for the past 15 years and are still suffering in refugee camps in Vavuniya.

Asian Tribune: How many people of Indian origin are still suffering without a roof over their heads?

Basil Rajapaksa: I am not sure of the total number of people, but the figure is more than 10,000 families. In fact according to our information, they don't like to go back to the estates in the Up-country, but they were simply chased out by the LTTE in the early part of 1996 from Mullaitivu, Kilinochchi, Mannar and also from some parts of Vavuniya. Now they are languishing in the Vavuniya in the camps.

(((Only dialogue can bring peace - Chandrika

The ongoing war between the Sri Lankan government and the LTTE cannot be a solution to the ethnic conflict in the island nation and only a negotiated settlement will bring lasting peace in the nation, former Sri Lankan president Chandrika Kumaratunga said in New Delhi, yesterday.

Asked about the current situation in Sri Lanka, she told rediff.com: "We are deeply concerned by the killings of innocent civilians.''

The Sri Lankan ex-president was in the capital to participate in a panel discussion on Union Minister Mani Shankar Aiyar's book on Rajiv Gandhi, A Time of Transition.

Asked to comment on President Mahinda Rajapaksa's approach and what she thought as an ideal way to end the conflict, Kumaratunga, who is also the leader of the ruling United People's Freedom Alliance coalition, said: "I don't think the President wants to listen to me."

Kumaratunga and Rajapaksa haven't always been on good terms ever since her time as President, when he was the prime minister.

During her presidency, there were a number of political and policy issues, including the question of how to deal with the Tigers, on which Kumaratunga disagreed with her own prime minister.

Asked what her suggestion would be to end the conflict with minimum damage, she said talks and negotiations with the Tamil people was the only way out.

"Negotiating a settlement will be the only lasting solution to this conflict," she said.

Earlier, talking in the panel discussion on whether the 21st Century has overtaken Rajiv Gandhi, Kumaratunga, who during her term opened talks with the Tigers which eventually failed, said Rajiv Gandhi and his secular ideal have not been overtaken by the 21st century.

She said Rajiv was heading a government in India at a time when things were very gloomy in Sri Lanka and warranted Indian intervention.

"He was deeply involved in the situation because of the circumstances. That was the time when the pogrom of July 1983, dubbed Black July, had just happened and over 600,000 Tamils fled the country to Tamil Nadu by the time he came to power," she said.

At a personal level, she said she hadn't interacted much with Rajiv, though she remembered the time when Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru had insisted on former Sri Lankan prime minister and her father Solomon Bandaranayake brining along his children on a visit to India.

"I remember meeting a young Indira Gandhi

and her two sons. We didn't talk much. They were too keen on zipping around in fast cars," she said.}}}

{{{We are deeply sad, puzzled: LTTE Political Head
[Tue, 17 Feb 2009, 16:16 GMT]

"We are deeply sad and puzzled at the attitude of the apex institution of humanity, the United Nations, in not taking effective measures to protect the life, security and interests of innocent Tamil civilians," said LTTE's Political Head B. Nadesan on Tuesday. "Instead, the UN is engaged in fruitless exercises of accusing the wrong side, without coming and seeing what is happening by themselves," he said. When stopping the war is the need of the hour, allowing it and lamenting civilian sufferings is a faulty policy, Mr. Nadesan said, adding that indicting the defensive LTTE and exploiting the plight of civilians for the agenda of those who are waging the war will not bring in any positive results. India mistaken on arms and talks - experts
[Mon, 16 Feb 2009, 19:43 GMT]
Indian Home Minister P Chidambaram’s call for the LTTE to surrender arms was not in keeping with international practice on conflict resolution, but an endorsement of the Sri Lankan government’s hardline position, scholars of conflict and peace said Monday. They pointed a number of successful peace processes, including those with the ANC, IRA and Nepal’s Maoists had proceeded without making arms surrender a precondition for talks. There had also been several peace processes involving the LTTE without this precondition, a scholar of Sri Lanka’s conflict pointed out. The Indian government was in effect supporting the Rajapakse government’s efforts to avoid negotiations on a lasting settlement by making talks conditional on a demand unacceptable to any party to a conflict, some academics opined. Sri Lanka Army (SLA) artillery barrage has boxed Theavipuram and Va'l'lipunam villages within the old 'safety zone,' trapping thousands of civilians preventing them from moving to the new 'safe zone'. At least 5 humanitarian workers were killed while serving the needs of the civilians trapped inside the 'Theavipuram box'. Full story >>

Colombo uses firebombs setting ablaze civilian targets in Vanni
[Mon, 16 Feb 2009, 11:30 GMT]

Sri Lanka Army (SLA) and Sri Lanka Air Force (SLAF) have increasingly deployed incendiary bombs in several forms in recent attacks on Vanni civilians. A petroleum-derived liquid mixture is found used in SLAF bombardments. The same kind of bomb is also used in artillery and mortar barrage in addition to artillery-fired flying fireballs that ignite the bombed target. Recently, the makeshift hospital at Udaaiyaarkaddu was attacked with such bombs, as documented by a video, filmed from a building in the hospital. Full story >>

“War is also theirs, peace is also theirs; therefore the solution also should be theirs. Why don’t they come out with that and end the suffering?” asked a sulking school teacher in Vanni, frustrated at the diplomatic games and dilly-dallying of world powers in protecting the life and dignity of civilians, neither by themselves nor allowing the UN to do it. But the solution some of the powers envisage in what they call the ‘post-LTTE era’ goes back to the concentration camps of the Nazi times. Full story >>

already yesterday army sources confirmed, that the 58th is on the northern outskirts of PTK and that the old "Safe Zone" has been overrun!!! The battlefield-maps are not actualy, forget them!!!

The Security Forces engaged in the final battle against the LTTE , yesterday entered Puthukuduyiruppu West area confining the LTTE to less than 80 square kilometre area whilst all top level Tiger leaders were making desperate attempts to stop the troops advance towards Puthukuduyiruppu, military sources told the Daily News yesterday.

”The 58 Division under the command of Brigadier Shavendra Silva entered Puthukuduyiruppu West amidst heavy resistance from the LTTE”, sources added. They have recovered dead bodies of Tigers during the past two days with 10 of them recovered yesterday.

Following these moves the Security Forces have taken full control of the previous ‘No Fire Zone’ declared by the Army after thousands of civilians moved out of the area once Army declared the new safe areas in the coastal belt in the North of Mullaitivu.

55th is reaching northern outskirts of Palamattalan.55th plans to capture this village in the next 48 hours. Then the 55th will stop until PTK is fallen and all other divisions in full strength approach the coast. However one brigade of 58th has already bypassed PTK-North and is approaching the new "Safe Zone" on the coast with less resistance than expected.

rupavahini reports, that 58th has linked up with Task Forces 2 and 4 and entered PTK town from western and northern direction hours ago, fierce fighting underway. Everyone,

There is a lot of confusion today. Obviously terra supporters are capitalising on this to float all kinds of rumours.

The main problem in my view is that the defence websites are not updating their maps properly or on time.

This is what I have got from a conclusive source in Wanni SFHQ. I won;t give details about him because last time I did many of you warned me not to because this is a public forum.

Troops moving from the north-west and west direction have made quick progress. The area that was previously used as safe zone for civilians is now under full control of the forces.

TF4, 58 Division and 571 are now ready to launch final assault on PTK from west/north.

The problem is south of PTK. A few days ago in the fierce battles troops were pushed about 2km south of the place called Kerpapaluwa. Now our best forces of 53 division, 572 and new TF 8 are working on this.

Once we get to south/east of PTK final assault will be launched. Remember SF troops are already operating in PTK and there is no major buildup of terras there so it will be easy task.

When you look at the map on defence website just take a chunk of uncleared area from northwest and place it to southeast.

Troops should be able to clear this area in 2 days. After that we can safely walk into PTK.

If we try to take it now there will be more casualties on our side. Why lose precious lives that way? We have waited 30 years so 2 days to save the lives of our heroes is worth it.

PTK-BATTLE-UPDATE:

My source tells me,that there is heavy fighting in the northern, southern and western parts of PTK. Heavy LTTE-resistance. Town Center and Eastern PTK under LTTE-control. 58th enters the western part with tanks, while 53th enters the town with large infantry units!!! Will continue to update tomorrow,my source will not be available for the next 12 hours

DW / Guys

Thanks for the updates..

In my view, i think this is a serious setback..how can a 30 man Tiger team manage to overrun an entire Division and cause havoc??..and in the process capture 2 T-55's as well??..This has to be complacency and lack of alertness on the part of some soldiers.and those responsible should be held accountable for sacrificing so many lives in the process..

At the risk of being called a Tiget cheerleader,
I strongly feel that certain assertions and views on this guys blog probably are TRUE-

puligal.blogspot.com

This i feel is due to the article on the capture of the 152mm arti-gun and certain other articles which is indeed True.

Coming back to the attack, the capturing of the T-55's and their subsequent destruction only goes to show that the Tigers are still a very formidable outfit and have to be respected militarily on the battlefield :(

Tigers unleash fury on fleeing ‘shields'
By Sudha Ramachandran

Feb 18, 2009, BANGALORE -

A report in the Sunday Times, a Sri Lankan English newspaper, quotes presidential advisor Basil Rajapaksa as saying that the government has "substantial" intelligence indicating that Prabhakaran is planning a mass suicide with his hardcore fighters on the beaches of Mullaittivu, in the event of the armed forces closing in on him.

According to Rajapaksa, Prabhakaran expects many civilians to join the mass suicide. "It is not clear if the civilians were forced to put their names on the death list or had done it voluntarily," he said, adding that the event, which would be a major public show, would be videoed and shown to the Tamil diaspora to keep their support to the Tamil Eelam cause alive.

Tamil historical writings are replete with examples of soldiers and civilians taking their lives, even severing their heads to prove their loyalty to their king. There have been instances too of Tamils in the southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu killing themselves on the death of their leaders and heroes. It would not be surprising therefore if some Tamils did kill themselves should Prabhakaran commit suicide. But importantly, will they do so voluntarily or will they be compelled under the threat of a gun to follow the LTTE chief?

Sam Perera said...

Renegade,

The puligal is the absolute truth next to Tamilnet. In fact they downplay any SLA losses and overplay LTTE losses, just to be humble. That is how LTTE came this far, I mean from Adampan to Puthu in such a short time. What is your suggestion, should we Court Marshall SLA soldiers who died in LTTE suicide-bomber-in-refugee-disguise attack?

It's so regretful to say that, none of SL papers weren't quick enough to report heroic act of Capt. Pushpakumara before the so called 'Lanka Guardian' went along with damning report about the incident, shaming the SLDF

Hey there, Author!

I just finished reading your article, and I couldn't help but drop a comment. First of all, kudos to you for such an insightful piece. Your perspective on the topic is truly unique, and it made me see things in a whole new light. It's evident that you've put a lot of thought and research into this, and that's greatly appreciated. Your writing style is engaging and easy to follow, which made the reading experience all the more enjoyable. I loved how you broke down complex concepts into simple, relatable ideas. It's a skill not many possess, but you nailed it!

But what I loved the most about your article was the way you intertwined real-life anecdotes to illustrate your points. It made the whole piece so relatable, like a friendly chat over coffee. It's not often you come across articles that manage to be both informative and approachable, and you did just that. Your writing has a certain charm that keeps the reader hooked from start to finish. So, keep up the fantastic work, and I can't wait to read more from you! Thanks for sharing your insights with the world. 😊
