LTTE waits for Vaiko as Special Forces do their antics

Military Intelligence has uncovered evidence to indicate that Velupillai Prabhakaran, Poddu Amman and many of the other senior members of the LTTE are holed-in along with the civilians. "Colonel" Swarnam's leg has been amputated and a large number of cadres in the "Lt. Colonel" rank have died in recent battles.

In many ways the second, third and fourth rung of the LTTE cadre has suffered heavily. "Colonel" Lakshman's wife, an LTTE "Doctor" and the Director of the LTTE's Keerthika Hospital has been killed. The Leader of the LTTE's Mine-laying unit (called Ponnammaan) has also been killed in fighting.

MIC has received credible intelligence that the LTTE was planning to hold on to the remaining area until end of April or May at the most. They expect Vaiko and other LTTE supporters from Tamil Nadu to win the forthcoming elections for the 15th Lok Sabha in India and a subsequent Indian Intervention in Sri Lanka.

Meanwhile a large band of hardcore Tigers and suicide bombers who infiltrated the 58 FDL recently have started their operations. Last week a patrol from 4 Special Forces brought in to re-instruct the 58 Division's FDL following the attack reported by us some weeks ago was targeted by an LTTE Black Tiger Commando unit.

A Corporal in a Special Forces-like uniform, bandana, beard and ALICE Pack was approaching the SF team. An experienced SF Sergeant leading the team, almost by instinct, saw through the plan. Without any questioning, the SF Sergeant opened fire felling the Corporal on the spot before he could approach the team. The Corporal turned out to be an LTTE suicide bomber with an ALICE pack packed full of explosives enough to wipe out an entire SF company.

On February 2nd, another SF soldier from 4 SF demonstrated a similar last minute, jaw-breaking stunt when he and is 12-man team was tasked to ambush LTTE suicide vehicles plying the Puthukudirippu Oddusudan road following a Cease-less Wave type of attack the Tigers launched on January 30th aimed at recapturing Mulaitivu on Independence Day 4th of February.

Having suddenly observed an cab and estimating that it was packed full of explosives, the SF soldier functioning in the RPG post launched an RPG-7 HEAT at the approaching cab at very close range. The cab exploded and the soldier sacrificed his life to save his teammates who were dug in safely inside foxholes behind him.

It looks like Indian agents are having a field day in Sri Lanka.
Senior government officials should not take favors from foreign government agents. It compromises their position and makes them susceptible to blackmail.

From “Outlook India”

There's A Spy In My Soup

The new RAW chief takes over at a time when morale is at an all-time low and 'recall' cases are rising by the day

by Saikat Datta

Foreign Locales, Phoren Attitudes

* Berlin: RAW officer asked to return due to poor quality of intelligence and differences with his Intelligence Bureau counterpart.
* Colombo: Ambassador wants officer out for breach of protocol and meeting senior Sri Lankan officials/leaders.
* Brussels: Officer recalled after allegations of financial bungling and misappropriation of funds. Inquiry pending.
* Beijing: RAW operative recalled for allegedly "mishandling" her junior and compromising security by using the office computer to surf the Net.

In February this year, K.C. Verma, a 1971 batch police officer from the Jharkhand cadre, took over as chief of India's external intelligence agency, Research & Analysis Wing (RAW), and with it inherited the problems that have plagued the organisation for years.

In the last year or so, RAW has seen some of the highest recall rates of its officers from foreign postings, causing much embarrassment. Now a few more Indian ambassadors/high commissioners have written to the government complaining about RAW officers posted at their embassies/high commissions and seeking their recall. Last year saw the return of P. Hanniman, a joint secretary-level officer, from Brussels after allegations of financial bunglings and siphoning of secret funds surfaced.

This year there are pending requests from the Indian ambassador to Germany, Meera Shankar, requesting that a RAW officer, K. Jha, be recalled. Similarly, the Indian high commissioner in Sri Lanka, Alok Prasad, has complained about P. Rao, a woman officer posted in Colombo. Prasad feels that Rao's meetings with senior Sri Lankan dignitaries were an embarrassment. A similar request has been received from the Indian ambassador to Afghanistan.

Last year saw the sudden return of two RAW officers from Sri Lanka and China. Ravi Nair came back home from Colombo under a cloud, while Uma Mishra, a director-level officer posted in Beijing, was recalled after allegations of an affair between her subordinate and a Chinese interpreter surfaced. Mishra was accused of mishandling the entire affair as well as compromising security with a senior visiting IB officer accusing her of using his computer to surf the Net.

For Verma, these are issues he'll have to resolve quickly. His appointment comes after a three-year hiatus for him: he spent it outside the Indian intelligence community for health reasons. In between, he had bypass surgery and had taken over as Narcotics Control Bureau chief where he worked with P. Chidambaram, then the finance minister.

The P. Hanniman case will now be top priority. Hanniman is currently posted in Delhi and the inquiry against him for siphoning off secret funds in Brussels has been completed. Strangely enough, Hanniman seems to have survived till now because the inquiry report was kept pending by Gurinder Singh, a special secretary with RAW who has been sent abroad now as special security advisor to the government of Mauritius. Singh sat on the inquiry file for almost a year before sending it back without taking any decision, days before he left for Mauritius. RAW officers allege that Singh did it to protect a fellow IPS officer.

Meanwhile, the Indian high commissioner to Lanka has demanded that the lady officer posted in Colombo be recalled immediately. According to several officers familiar with the case, the high commissioner took umbrage on protocol issues saying the lady officer was overstepping her brief by independently meeting senior Sri Lankan officials.

In Germany, differences between an IB and RAW officer have led to the latter facing the prospect of being sent home in the next few weeks.A similar fate awaits the RAW officer in Kabul with the Indian ambassador there reportedly unhappy with his performance. Incidentally, this isn't the first time that India's RAW station in Germany has come under a cloud. Another IPS cadre officer was accused of forging the letterhead of the Pakistani ambassador to Germany a few years ago and passing fake letters/memos as intelligence gathered. When detected, he was immediately repatriated to his parent cadre state, Uttarakhand. He is currently facing a cbi inquiry in a corruption case.

What irks officers within RAW is the way these "requests" for withdrawal are treated by the government. Last year, when Ravi Nair was pulled out of Colombo, there were allegations of him being associated with a "Chinese spy". However, a subsequent inquiry revealed that the charges were blatantly false. Instead, it came to light that Sri Lankan foreign minister Rohitha Bogollagama had orchestrated the whole episode.

Apparently, Nair was Bogollagama's tenant in Colombo and had refused to pay for expensive furniture that the minister had ordered for the house. This dispute became a full-blown crisis when Bogollagama's daughter's continuance in AIIMS, Delhi, was threatened due to her dismal academic performance. (RAW had organised her admission but couldn't ensure the medical degree.) As differences came out into the open, Nair was immediately recalled, only to be proved innocent of the charges later. A similar dispute between the RAW officer in Germany and his IB counterpart led to the present impasse. The Indian ambassador, unimpressed with the quality of reports the officer was generating, raised the issue with the MEA, leading to the officer's imminent recall.

For Verma, these are tricky issues since a similar episode last year led to the resignation of RAW's China expert, Jaidev Ranade. A career intelligence officer, he was literally hounded out by the earlier secretary, Ashok Chaturvedi, on grounds that Ranade had not sought permission for his wife's employment with the World Bank. Embarrassed by Ranade's resignation, the pmo stepped in and issued orders to promote him to the post of additional secretary even though his resignation had been accepted.

RAW has always been bogged down by experienced officers leaving, citing harassment and nepotism. Sandip Joshi, who had done extensive work to break up the Khalistan movement, quit two years ago, while Vijay Tewatia, a joint secretary, was forced to take voluntary retirement after his wife, a doctor, took up an assignment with the UN.

Simultaneously, RAW has failed to attract new talent. It has recruited only six officers in the last eight years and continues to depend on officers on deputation who leave soon after completing a lucrative foreign posting. This has led to a severe drought of expertise and has left the ras cadre, raised specially to man the agency in the 1970s, demoralised and languishing in ignominy.

Indian-origin woman named UN rights commissioner

July 25th, 2008 - 1:39 pm ICT by IANS -

New York, July 25 (IANS) Indian-origin South African judge Navanethem Pillay, born in Durban to a bus driver, has been appointed the new UN High Commissioner of Human Rights. Pillay, 67, is to succeed Louise Arbour of Canada who completed her five-year term June 30.

UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has told the General Assembly his intention to appoint Pillay, who has served since 2003 as a judge on the International Criminal Court (ICC) in The Hague.

Pillay was nominated after an extensive selection process which included consultations with member states and with the broad-based NGO community, Ban s spokesperson said Thursday.

The secretary-general is committed to ensuring that human rights remain high on the agenda of the organisation. He expects that the new high commissioner will preserve the independence of her office and will maintain effective working relations with the General Assembly and the Human Rights Council, the spokesperson said.

Ban is determined to fully support Pillay in carrying out her work, including with increased resources, as approved by the General Assembly , the spokesperson added.

The high commissioner holds the rank of under-secretary general and coordinates human rights activities throughout the UN system and supervises the Human Rights Council in Geneva.

Born in 1941 in a Tamil speaking family, Pillai became the first non-white woman judge to sit in South Africa s highest court in 1995.

In a long and illustrious legal career over four decades, she first came into prominence in 1967 when she became the first woman to set up law practice in the Natal province of South Africa.

She defended many anti-apartheid activists and trade unionists. In 1973 she brought a successful application against the officer commanding Robben Island Prison, which enabled political prisoners, including Nelson Mandela, to have access to lawyers.

Later, studying at Harvard, she earned a Master of Law degree in 1982 and and Doctor of Juridical Science in 1988.

Before her ICC assignment she served as a judge of the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda and led the landmark decisions defining rape as an institutionalised weapon of war and a crime of genocide.

I hope Ms Pillai know Laws of natural justice... Tamil cannot pass a judgment regarding Tamil terrorists in sri Lanka

The official citations for the Women's Rights Prize for 2003 reads:

"The Women's Rights Prize of the Peter Gruber Foundation is hereby proudly presented to the Honorable Navanethem Pillay, former President of the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda (ICTR) for her courageous leadership in advancing women's human rights. The landmark decision of the ICTR defining rape as an institutionalized weapon of war and a crime of genocide was a breakthrough for the international women's movement and validated the organizing efforts by Rwandan women."

"The Women's Rights Prize of the Peter Gruber Foundation is hereby proudly presented to the Network Pro Femmes Twese Hamwe, a national network of women's groups that represents the courageous women of Rwanda, who constitute 70% of the survivors of genocide and sexual violence. The prize particularly celebrates the leadership of grassroots women's organizations for their resilience and commitment to peace, reconciliation, and nation building."

Peter Gruber, founder of the foundation that bears his name, said, "Women represent half the world's population. We established the Women's Rights Prize to redress restrictive laws and customs that deprive women not only of their human rights, but also of their ability to enrich the human condition. Judge Pillay and Pro Femmes Twese Hamwe have advanced the welfare of all through their dedicated work, and embody the principles we affirm with this prize."

The Peter Gruber Foundation, a philanthropic organization based in the U.S. Virgin Islands, began its international prize program in the year 2000. In addition of the Women's Rights Prize, the Foundation presents awards annually in the fields of cosmology, genetics, and justice.

Romeo,

The debate was a private debate in Westminster Hall. It was not in the main chamber. All the usual MP's that have large Tamil representation in their constituency was there. It was the usual story, Tamil Net headlines and Navi Pillay quotes galore.

Only a very few MP's were there, they were calling for the Sri Lanka to be suspended from the Commonwealth. There was only a very junior minister representing the British Government.

The MP's in the debate were frustrated that nobody took the Sri Lanka issue seriously. Also that most MP's that they requested to attend the debate stayed away. It was assumed that they had fallen prey to Sri Lankan high commison's propaganda (who were apparently sending quite few emails exposing LTTE's antics in the no-fire zone).

All in all it was just the usual suspects trying appease their Tamil electorate. There was no official condemnation from the British Government, just some MP's representing some ghettos in greater London crying out genocide and cluster bombs.

Some MP chap was going to waste his time today by writing a letter to someone in the Commonwealth to ban Sri Lanka just like Zimbabwe.

Then as security forces advances herd civilians like bulls and cows into protect themselves by creating a human shield. Used innocent civilians throughout as cannon fodders and slaves to save senior cadres. When they want to run away from so called shrinking eelam, they were shot dead by so called liberators.

This is a war with a worst enemy of Sri Lanka. We will not abandon our target because of some civilians who wanted the eelam and support tigers.

This unhelpful attitude and disrespect from the US have to be addressed and fixed once and for all.

Not that they affect us too much... but if we give respect to them... it is not too much to EXPECT reciprocation.

And where's Peter going to find the cash to buy Gap, after striking out as an "investment banker" (Peter had mentioned he was Thalaivar's oil boy when he first came to DW).

Rover’s blog has given a nice article on terrorism and freedom fighters, this is one of my responses to rover’sterrain.blogspot:

Still at the same subject;

Terrorism:

• Attack civilians without selection
• Export battles to different locations other than where issue exists
• Has external influence
• Centred around an individual leader
• The end justifies the means
• Motive – greed and power
• Follow racial or religious ideology

Freedom Fighters:

• Attack military and government targets only
• Fights in area of dispute
• Only have internal influence
• Not centred on a individual
• Means must be justifiable
• Motive – freedom and democracy

The above clearly shows LTTE is a terrorist organisation which terrorise all Sri Lankans without racial, religious or any other demarcations.

Except their main terror activities limited to Sri Lanka in most cases; assassination of Indian prime minister, intimidation, extortion, fraud, drug trafficking and human trafficking have affected other communities internationally.

Wijayapala,

People like Peter Ratnadorei have nurtured a monster called LTTE to realise vengeance from Sinhala people because of 1983 communal riots. Their finances were ruthlessly exploited by LTTE to kill thousands of innocent Tamils, Muslims and Sinhalese civilians.

Still they are trying to save the monster from brink of annihilation at the hands of Sri Lanka security forces.

Another interesting difference:

Freedom Fighters:

A freedom fighter wants to live and let live, fighting against those individuals who intrude upon his (or sometimes someone else's) private lives. Freedom fighters target tyrants and their agents but do not seek to replace them with just another brand of tyranny.

Terrorists:

By contrast, a terrorist spreads fear among a whole populace, killing indiscriminately to threaten all. Terrorists usually aren't fighting for anyone's freedom. Instead, they're usually fighting for their own chance to be tyrants, hence their disregard even for the lives of the people they may claim to be "liberating".

Although Ms Navi Pillai was a forme South African Judge she seems still unaware of the 'laws of natural justice'. She proved her stupidity by commenting about human rights violations in Sri Lanka

Laws of Natural justice

According to Roman law certain basic legal principles are required by nature, or so obvious that they should be applied universally without needing to be enacted into law by a legislator. The assertion in the United States' Declaration of Independence, 'We hold these truths to be self-evident,' expresses some of this sentiment. The rules or principles of natural justice are now regularly applied by the courts in both common law and civil law jurisdictions. Natural justice operates on the principles that man is basically good, that a person of good intent should not be harmed, and one should treat others as one would like to be treated.

Natural justice includes the notion of procedural fairness and may incorporate the following guidelines:

A person accused of a crime, or at risk of some form of loss, should be given adequate notice about the proceedings (including any charges).

A person making a decision should declare any personal interest they may have in the proceedings.

A person who makes a decision should be unbiased and act in good faith. He therefore can not be one of the parties in the case, or have an interest in the outcome. This is expressed in the Latin maxim, nemo iudex in causa sua: 'no man is permitted to be judge in his own cause'.

Proceedings should be conducted so they are fair to all the parties - expressed in the Latin maxim audi alteram partem: 'let the other side be heard'.

Each party to a proceeding is entitled to ask questions and contradict the evidence of the opposing party.

A decision-maker should take into account relevant considerations and extenuating circumstances, and ignore irrelevant considerations.

Justice should be seen to be done. If the community is satisfied that justice has been done, they will continue to place their faith in the courts.

Notably, natural justice is binding upon both public and private entities, such as trade unions. In contrast, the U.S. concept of due process is strictly limited to decisions made by governmental entities, although the U.S. state of California has developed a doctrine of fair procedure which is binding upon certain types of private entities in that state.

Sri Lanka to Discuss Political Settlement With Tamil Parties
Share | Email | Print | A A A

By Paul Tighe

March 25 (Bloomberg) -- Sri Lanka’s President Mahinda Rajapaksa invited Tamil political parties to discuss a settlement to separatist demands, as the army says it is on the brink of defeating the rebel Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam.

Rajapaksa invited Tamil and Muslim parties currently in parliament and those represented previously in the assembly to a meeting tomorrow, the government said on its Web site.

“The military campaign against the LTTE has reached a decisive phase and there is considerable interest in the government’s moves to activate the political process for a resolution of the ethnic conflict,” the government said.

The LTTE has been fighting for a separate Tamil homeland in the north and east of the nation for 26 years. The army has driven the Tamil Tigers from their main bases in the north since January and says the rebels now hold only 24 square kilometers (9.3 square miles) of land near the northeastern port of Mullaitivu.

An All Party Representative Committee has drawn up plans for both devolution and sharing of power with the local administrations in Tamil-dominated areas in the north and east.

The plan is based on a 1987 constitutional amendment that arose from an accord with India. The LTTE rejected the amendment in 1988, saying the proposal was meaningless because the national parliament retained the power to rule on matters allocated to provincial authorities.

Tamil Referendum

The LTTE will respect any outcome of a referendum on an independent Tamil state as long as Tamils are allowed to return to their homes in the north and east of the country, B. Nadesan, the head of the group’s political wing, said in an interview with the U.K.’s Sunday Times newspaper published at the weekend.

Rajapaksa “has been consistent in stating that he does not believe in imposing any political solution, but would be interested in knowing the views of all political parties for the purpose of arriving at a consensus on any set of proposals,” the government said on its Web site.

The Tamil National Alliance, the largest Tamil group in parliament, holding 22 seats in the 225-member body, is among those invited by Rajapaksa, the government said. TNA leaders are meeting to decide whether to attend, the Island newspaper reported yesterday, citing unidentified party members.

Soldiers are fighting the Tamil Tigers around Puthukkudiyiruppu near Mullaitivu where the LTTE is “now cornered” and “facing its end-game,” the Defense Ministry said on its Web site.

Truce Talks

Rajapaksa’s government has rejected holding any cease-fire talks with the LTTE, saying it wants the group’s unconditional surrender. It accuses the Tamil Tigers of holding between 75,000 and 120,000 civilians in the conflict zone.

Nadesan, in his interview, called for a cease-fire to allow supplies to reach civilians. Tamils are being subjected to “genocidal warfare” through non-stop artillery shelling and aerial attacks that are killing civilians, he said.

The government says more than 51,000 people have fled into government-controlled areas since January.

Sri Lanka’s army is continuing to shell areas declared a “no fire zone,” Human Rights Watch said yesterday.

“We receive reports of civilians being killed and wounded daily in the ‘no fire’ zone, while the Sri Lankan government continues to deny the attacks,” Brad Adams, the New York-based group’s Asia director, said. “The Tamil Tigers’ use of civilians as human shields adds to the bloodshed.”

The situation in the north is being distorted by unsubstantiated reports, the Defense Ministry said on its Web site yesterday.

Tamils made up 11.9 percent of Sri Lanka’s population of 20 million and the Sinhalese almost 74 percent, according to a census from 2001.

More than 70,000 people have been killed in the conflict with the LTTE, which is designated a terrorist organization by the U.S., the European Union and India.

Its actually should be of eelam orign, not a smart sri lankan like you.

Rampant Rulersby Tisaranee Gunasekara
A progeny of Mahinda Chintana, the Lankaputhra Bank, will be bailed out by the Treasury to the tune of Rs. 400 million, to make up for the (irrecoverable) loan it gave to another Mahinda Chintana progeny, Mihin Air. That transaction is symptomatic of the financial thinking and praxis of the Rajapakse administration. But the government is not the sole culprit. The Auditor General is on record expressing his dissatisfaction with the parliament for failing to act on his 2007 Report which criticised several major institutions including the Finance Ministry and the Armed Forces for malpractices. (According to an Island report, the parliament is busy seeking prime real estate to build ‘a state of the art’ housing complex – for parliamentarians).

Under the Rajapakses, there is a steady erosion of the line of demarcation between the state and the ruling family; consequently dumping scarce public funds into the financial black hole that is Mihin Air, simply because it is the President’s brainchild and bears his name, is in no way remarkable. Equally unremarkable is the resounding silence of the gargantuan cabinet. But the inability of the Opposition (particularly the UNP and the JVP) to deal with these wanton abuses, even after they have been detailed by the Auditor General in an official report, is inexplicable and unforgivable. Even the COPE, which had an ‘hour of glorious life’ under the able chairmanship of Wijedasa Rajapakse, has degenerated into silence.

Denial is the leitmotiv of Rajapakse Rule. Sri Lanka is compelled to seek IMF assistance because the regime ignored the signs of a financial scissors crisis, and spent lavishly money it did not have (Mihin Air was and is a noted guzzler). When reputed international organisations warned about the dangers ahead, the Governor of the Central Bank, instead of lending an ear, resorted to verbal fisticuffs. Until recently the government was boasting of the miraculous properties of Mahinda Chintana which made Sri Lanka immune to the global financial plague. Today the same regime has gone back to the IMF in the guise of a supplicant, while telling the public that the IMF offered a loan, unconditionally. It is almost as if the government believes, and wants us to believe, that Sri Lanka is taking an IMF loan, as a favour to the IMF.

Non sequiturs

Where does propaganda end and delusion begin? Take the antithetical reports by the Presidential Secretariat and the US State Department of the first telephone conversation between President Rajapakse and Secretary of State Hilary Rodham Clinton. According to the state department Ms. Clinton called to express ‘deep concern over the deteriorating conditions and increasing loss of life’ in the war zone; she stated ‘that the Sri Lankan Army should not fire into the civilian areas of the conflict zone’, called for a ‘political solution to the ongoing conflict’ and urged Colombo ‘to give international humanitarian relief organisations full access to the conflict area and displaced persons camps, including screening centres’. But according to Presidential Secretariat the conversation was just ‘warm and cordial’; Ms. Clinton ‘appreciated the assurances given by Secretary Defence that civilians should not be subjected to any attacks by the military’ and ‘acknowledged that Sri Lanka is now on the verge of defeating terrorism, and that this presented a great opportunity to restore peace, leading to reconstruction and rehabilitating of the country’. Must propaganda be this puerile?

"Children and their families caught in the conflict zone are at risk of dying from disease and malnutrition" according to a statement by UNICEF Executive Director Ann Veneman (BBC – 18.3.2009). The casus belli of the current politico-propaganda offensive against Sri Lanka is this worsening plight of the trapped civilians. With no civilians dying in the crossfire, and of hunger and sickness, there will be no outcry in Tamilnadu, or EU resolutions. The UN Human Rights Commissioner would not be talking about war crimes and the world will permit Sri Lanka and the LTTE to fight it out any which way they can. Indian and international concern will be on the conditions of the displaced, the needs of reconstruction and the shape of a political solution.

So what is the government doing to deprive the Tigers’ of this monstrous advantage? According to ‘The Hindu’ Sri Lanka has refused offers by India and the US to help evacuate the trapped civilians, as stated by Foreign Minister Rohitha Bogollagama to the visiting British Shadow Secretary Liam Fox. Why? Mr. Bogollagama "cited the LTTE’s fierce resistance in releasing the people as the reason for the inability of his government to consider the offers" (The Hindu – 16.3.2009). The government turning down international offers of help because it believes the LTTE would not cooperate - does that make sense? Wouldn’t it have been better and smarter to accede to international requests, leaving it to the Tigers to either accept or turn down the US or India or the UN? At the least the Tamils and the international community would have known that the Lankan state went the extra mile to save the trapped civilians.

Sakvithi Ranasinghe and Lalith Kotelawala are both accused of the same crime; but Lalith Kotelawala’s conduct is more outrageous, precisely because he is Lalith Kotelawala, honour-bound to act differently from the Sakvithi Ranasinghes of this world. The Lankan state, precisely because it is a legitimate and a democratic entity, cannot use the crimes of the Tigers to justify its own sins of omission and commission. According to the website, Transcurrents, the number of civilian casualties in Pothumaththalan hospital in the first 10 days of March was 964, with 95% of them coming from ‘safe areas’. But as far as the government is concerned there are no civilian casualties, other than the ones caused by the LTTE. Is it logical to claim that the only danger faced by the trapped civilians is being conscripted, injured or killed by the Tigers? Is it reasonable to aver that the civilians are not plagued by hunger and sickness or killed and injured by our shelling?

Denial did not make the economic crisis go away. Denial cannot resolve the humanitarian crisis in the Vanni either. When people (especially children) continue to die in increasing numbers, the government which denies this tragedy begins to look as heartless as the LTTE that is holding them hostage. The only way out is to publicly accept some international offer of help, thus placing the ball in the LTTE’s court. Instead some Rajapakse allies are accusing the UN of conspiring against Sri Lanka and threatening to surround UN offices. What is the root cause of this suicidal extremism which prevents Sri Lanka from doing the decent, rational and wise thing? Why is Sri Lanka so manifestly unable to translate her military victories into political successes?

Tigers and Tamils

From Indo-Lanka Accord onwards, the LTTE has been the main impediment to a negotiated peace and a political solution to the ethnic problem; had Mr. Pirapaharan been a little less intransigent, the war could have ended if not in 1987, definitely in 1989 or 1994 or 2002. The other impediment to a peaceful resolution of the conflict, Sinhala supremacism, was not dominant within the polity or society during this period and it was Tiger maximalism which kept the country and the Tamils locked in a war benefiting neither.

Today, though the LTTE is being trounced militarily, Sinhala supremacism is in ascendance within the state and society. Sinhala supremacists do not distinguish between Tigers, Tamil separatists or Tamil nationalists, any more than they make a distinction between separate, federal or quasi-federal. For them any departure from the unitary state is akin to separation. When it comes to a political solution they are as intransigent and as maximalist as the Tigers. They want to defeat the LTTE without making any concessions to the Tamils and with no quarters given to the civilians caught in the middle; they also see a diabolical conspiracy in any expression of international concern about the Lankan conflict (Sinhala supremacists have their own version of Huntington’s ‘Clash of civilisation’ theory and a rendition of history premised on it). They believe that peace can come only after Tamils have learnt their place in a Sinhala ruled Sri Lanka. These ideas are being articulated not by political delinquents on the lunatic fringe but by powerful personages and influential entities such as the Army Commander and the JHU.

A failure to understand the difference between the Tigers and non-Tiger Tamil separatists would lead to the monumental error of responding to them identically rather than differently. The Tigers must be defeated militarily (because Vellupillai Pirapaharan will not settle for nothing but jure Eelam) while non-Tiger Tamil separatists have to be neutralised politically and Tamil nationalists who do not subscribe to separatism accommodated with a generous political solution to the ethnic problem. The absence of such a nuanced approach will weaken non-separatist Tamil nationalists who want to live in a united Sri Lanka and strengthen the separatists of every variety.

Sinhala supremacists believe that since all Tigers are Tamil separatists and all Tamil separatists are Tamil nationalists, the obverse is also true - that all Tamil nationalists are Tamil separatists and all Tamil separatists are Tigers. This fallacy is the root cause of the regime’s indifference to the fate of the civilian Tamils caught in the war zone and its determination to incarcerate displaced Tamils in ‘camps’ for an indefinite period of time. Does this fallacy also play a role in the arbitrary manner in which the regime deals with media personnel accused of being ‘Tiger supporters’? When a journalist from Australia’s SBC TV asked about the purported arrest of Sudar Oli editor, N Vidyadaran, Defence Secretary Gotabhaya Rajapakse responded with an (now increasingly characteristic) outburst: "He is involved in the recent air attacks. I’m telling you if you try to give a cover up for that person you have the blood in your hands… He is a terrorist. He is responsible for coordinating air attacks in Colombo. He is a terrorist. We have arrested him and it is the right thing to do. We will take legal action against him" (Hunting the Tigers – Dateline).

Arresting Mr. Vidyatharan legally and taking legal action against him are unexceptionable; what was exceptionable was the manner of his arrest; that he was forcibly taken away in a white van and initially even the police denied arresting him. Such methods are both wrong and counterproductive, but perhaps inevitable, if the regime (or those within it with real power) fails to differentiate between Tigers, Tamil separatists or Tamil nationalists, lump all under the category ‘terrorist’.

The LTTE needs to erase the lines of demarcation between itself, Tamil separatists or Tamil nationalists; it wants the regime to apply the terrorist label to all dissenting Tamils. That is the path to isolate Sri Lanka internationally and set Tamilnadu ablaze. Tragically the Rajapaskes are playing along with this Tiger plan. When the normally anti-LTTE Jayalalitha Jeyaram demands Indian intervention to stop the Lankan war and expresses support for a separate Tamil state in Sri Lanka, when the BJP pledges that ‘if voted to power, the Advani-led NDA government would take firm steps to end the war in Sri Lanka and start talks" (India Express Buzz – 13.3.2009), they are responding to a sea change in Tamilnadu public opinion. By failing to make maximum concessions to non-Tiger Tamils (while waging war against the LTTE), the regime is providing a powerful fillip for Tamilnadu to evolve as a rear base for the LTTE in particular and Tamil separatism in general, once again. Perhaps a government in thrall to Sinhala supremacism cannot but be a part of the problem and perpetuate it.

Prof Navindran's "Model Economy" country Singapore in trouble!!

Quotes from above:
"Singapore's prime minister Lee Hsien Loong has warned that his country faces its worst economic crisis since World War II.

Exports from Singapore are falling at their fastest rate since records began, down 24% last month on 2008 figures, and down 35% in January."

"Worst in decades

Trade has driven Singapore's economy throughout its 200 years of existence.

And, says Mr Lee, even record levels of government spending cannot stop the island state sliding into its worst recession in decades.

"Well we're going to have very negative growth this year," Mr Lee said. "

"But perhaps the biggest question hanging over Singapore is what the impact record levels of local unemployment will have on the government's popularity.

There is no political opposition to speak of, and public demonstrations are banned, but people may find other ways to express their discontent if this recession proves to be a prolonged one. "

Ha ha! Where are those Tamil financial experts Navindran has been quoting all the time??

IF WE ALSO BAN PUBLIC DEMONSTRATIONS AND POLITICAL OPPOSITION, WE CAN DO 100 TIMES BETTER THAN SINGAPORE!

Destroy the tigers before April 14th - India to Sri Lanka

The election campaign had started for the forthcoming election from April16th to May 13th. There was a major opposition waves for congress in due course of Sri Lankan war issue. In this situation Congress had made a secret effort to Sri Lankan Government to destroy upto the root of tigers.

By this action, the Congress believe that they can overcome their election fear and make their success. The TamilNadu Government had also gave its supporting hands to this agreement. Karunanidhi also having the same thought of election stand in his mind and agreed for this, said the news source. This makes Karunanidhi not to interfere in Sri Lankan Tamils pain and lives. The political parties and the investigation departments of India are leading their ideas to destroy LTTE's. By obeying the order of destroying the group the congress having its faith to keep their position in this election also.

In this issue, when there was a press meet held last month in Netherlands, the party person Kalanidhi Vikramabagu Karunarathna explicitly express the truth that the war in Sri Lankan war is leaded by Indian Government. For their political gains, they are making the lives of tamils as a question, he says. Also while speaking in Parliament , Minister Sripala De Silva had accepted that they are having the tremenrous support and help from India to destroy the whole race and he remarked that the sinhalese should be thankful to India for their support. Also the Indian sources are in war front in Vanni and Mullaithivu the news sources added.

Peter said...

Karunanidhi is refusing to hold Sonia's skirt any longer because of the rotten Macaroni cheese smell emanating from between her legs.

Once, Sonia, being a lazy bitch, collapsed on Karunanidhi while he was holding her skirt; that's how he got the now infamous 'back pain'.

Stalin or Kanimozhi may have to do the honours now.

In a letter to Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and DMK President M Karunanidhi, copies of which were released to the media here today, Dr Singh said India also asked Sri Lanka to fulfill its commitment of ensuring equality and equal rights for Tamils as is the case of other citizens of Sri Lanka.

My comment at Sandeshaya Canada

This cartoon summarizes the reality crystal clearly.

The danger is HRW, AI, Innercity Press, BBC etc rely on LTTE disseminated false figures and propaganda.

The thought to be esteemed UN and UNHRC also are relying on LTTE disseminated/Tamilnet origined false propaganda whether they came from HRW or Innercity Press or BBC where roots trace back to LTTE.

The world has never seen this scale of misinformation that are poured through hundreds of channels by LTTE, and the world is getting confused day by day as they have no prior experience of such barrage.

LTTE is so organized that it has made its tentacles in every major Human Rights, Social Justice, and other International Governmental and none-governmental organizations. Even the UN is not spared.

LTTE has virtually hijacked MPs of various countries dangling their voter bases and feeding them with the same LTTE origin misinformation. We have seen many salivating MPs going to market for LTTE in many countries (Canada, UK, Norway, France, Switzerland, Germany, Australia etc).

All and all this cartoon tells most of the story. Please keep it up!

Genocide, war criminals, devolution and diaspora

Naval ratings giving a helping hand to a group of civilians who were among 139 that escaped from the LTTE controlled areas in nine dinghies on Monday. They arrived in seven dinghies hoisting white flags and were rescued by the Navy at off the Mulaitivu waters and brought ashore at Pulmudai. They were provided with much-needed food, refreshments and medical assistance, Navy Media Unit said.
There is lot of discussion these days on genocide, war criminals and of course devolution. Interestingly the discussion is among the usual crowd, namely the diaspora, the human rights people in the NGOs INGOs as well as united nations organisations and western diplomats. Some countries naturally backed by USA and UK and some other western countries are trying hard to bring the human rights situation in Sri Lanka before the security council of the United nations. If not for Russia and China this would have been already taken up at the Security Council and strictures would have been passed against Sri Lanka. If one thinks that the Tamil diaspora have been able to convince some not so well known country that it should move this resolution at the security council then one is mistaken. Some delegation of the Tamil diaspora may have met the leaders of the countries concerned but the council would not go against the wish of Russia and China that have veto powers. In any event it is doubtful that the former countries would have agreed to bring the Sri Lanka human rights situation for discussion if they did not have the backing of the USA. Those countries would not have done anything simply because an unknown delegation of the Tamil diaspora had met them. Here again as has been the case right throughout it is the western powerful countries that move less known countries against Sri Lanka and not the Tamil diaspora. The Tamil diaspora is neither that efficient nor recognized and if not for the powerful western countries their voice would not have been heard. Genocide means extermination of a race and even if the hundred thousand or so people trapped by the LTTE were killed that would not have exterminated the Tamils in Sri Lanka. The interesting fact is that about fifty thousand of these people have already left the area and gone to the so called exterminators voluntarily. Has anybody heard anything similar to that even vaguely? Did the Jews go to Hitler voluntarily and ask him to look after them? The delegations of the west that went to Vavunia and other places know how these people who have fled the "Tamil Eelam" and come to the "Sinhala Army" and the way the "Sinhala Government" has treated them. Apparently even the secretary of the united nations is satisfied with the way that these people have been treated by the armed forces and the government. At present there cannot be more than fifty thousand people "trapped" and very soon they will also find peace with the Sri Lankan armed forces. However the Tamil diaspora and officials of the united nations bodies that have been established to give employment to few thousands of highly paid officers from the poor countries of the world as a way of satisfying the middle class of these countries are busy collecting data of people who have been killed by the armed forces in the "war free" areas declared by the government. If these officials are interested in "facts" then they would know that more than fifty thousand Tamils have already left the LTTE for the armed forces, and can save some money that have been allocated to "collect" data. These officials including notorious Ms. Pillay "collect" data with quite a few objectives. They assume that Prabhakaran is trapped in Mulativu by the armed forces and they are more concerned of this trapped man than in the thousands of other "trapped people". If possible they want to give publicity to the so called war crimes of killing innocent people in order to send united nations forces with the expressed objective of liberating the so called trapped people. However what they are interested is in the life of Prabhakaran whom they assume is in Mulativu. While officials such as Pillay are collecting "data" (they are only constructing data) the secretary general expresses other views perhaps due to the objections raised by India and other countries against sending united nations forces to Sri Lanka and/or because he does not think that Prabhakaran is in Mulativu. Whatever may be the thinking of the secretary general, the officials and the secretary general himself and the Presidents and the Prime Ministers in the western countries have another objective in constructing data. They may be thinking of framing charges against the President, the Secretary to the ministry of defence and other officials in Sri Lanka as war criminals. Whatever may be the legal definition of a war crime, in the last analysis those who are tried for war crimes are the Presidents and others who go against the western (mainly American) policy. Who are the worst war criminals in the past seventy years or so? Who took the decision to drop atomic bombs to Hiroshima and Nagasaki? Who were the so called leaders who brought misery to Vietnam? Who took the decision to bomb indiscriminately in Afghanistan, Iraq and other such countries? Has anybody framed charges of war crimes against any of the American Presidents? Is Winston Churchill a war criminal or a hero? Why no Israeli Prime Minister is charged for war crimes? The legal definitions are there only for the students of law. The interpretation of law is for the others. The Tamil diaspora will go to town with charges of war crimes and genocide that will help the western powers. If the westerners do not send UN or some other forces due to Prabhakaran’s absence in Mulativu or because of opposition from countries such as India, China and Russia, then they will attempt to use the "data" constructed by Pillay and others to frame charges against the President, Defence Secretary and commanders of the armed forces, and if possible convict them. It should be remembered that some Tamils living abroad are already shouting of concentration camps. Tamil racism, separatism and terrorism are based on lies and nothing but lies and the concentration camp is the latest addition to the list of lies. However, if somebody asks the people who have left Prabhakaran’s camp whether concentration or not, and come to the armed forces they will have a different story to tell. In any event the diaspora will try their best to propagate more and more myths on genocide, war crimes, concentration camps and the rest as they are only interested in a Tamil Eelam. They are not prepared to integrate with the Sinhala people and work towards the development of the nation, as from the beginning the English speaking Tamils were nurtured by the British to think of themselves as the leaders and the rulers of the country. It is this idea of supremacy that has made them to interpret any loss of privileges that they enjoyed under the British as injustices to the Tamil community. The devolution is only the beginning of separatism and the diaspora with its supremacy thinking will not "lie down arms" until a separate state is won. If Prabhakaran has already escaped or would escape the Tamil diaspora will establish an Eelam in exile under the sponsorship of the western powers. However, those "trapped people" are not interested in the Eelam of the diaspora or even devolution of power and all that they want is some kind of development without Prabhakaran, the LTTE and Tamil supremacy.

Small question to all LTTE supporters in this blog:

Did anyone of you read this before?

“Mothers of Illegitimate children forced to be Black Tigers 25 women
belonging to the Anbarasi Regiment of the LTTE who became pregnant by
the leadership of the LTTE gave birth to their children at the
Keerthika Hospital in Manthuvil, Puthukudiyirupu, the area of
residence of the top leadership of the LTTE. These children are now
being cared for in a Children's Home run by Janaki Akka in the
Vallipunam area Devipuram. The women who gave birth to the
illegitimate children have been forced to join the Black Tigers
Regiment of the LTTE. These details have been published in a pamphlet
which is being freely distributed in the Vavuniya district. Members
of the Black Tiger Regiment are expected to be killed in suicide
missions within a short period. This would ensure that the secrets of
the children's parentage would remain secrets for ever

Dear Patriots,
A very good Reuters article on the end game.
link

The only thing that makes my blood boil is the stupid comments by this bloody fool Lakhdar Brahimi.

Sri Lanka`s government runs the risk of stirring further anger and distrust among Tamils, Lakhdar Brahimi, a former UN envoy, wrote in an International Herald Tribune opinion titled `A Slaughter Waiting to Happen.`

Bugger! This Brahimi fellow is depressed and sad that his pet terrorists are getting Slaughtered. Brahimi, my poor former envoy, it's actually 'A slaughter of LTTE happening right now'.

He urged the Tigers to free those trapped, and for international powers to push the government to contain the LTTE leadership instead of annihilating it.

Sure, no problem, Brahimi, my good fellow. Hundreds of brave SLA chaps gave up their life and limb, rolling over death fields littered with thousands of land mines and terrorists taking pot shots from earth bunds constructed using Backhoes donated by your NGO buddies, so your pet terrorists can merely be 'contained' not 'annihilated'?

So sorry, my poor fellow, we will slaughter them to the last pig.

Cheers!

guys,

is the SAM missile story true????

tigers use SA-7 varients. they have a MAXIMUM range that falls from 4.2 km to 5.5 km.

if the helis were flying at 1,000m altitude at the time, for the missiles to pose a threat, the missiles should have been fired from a distance of 4 - 5.4 km away.

if the altitude was lower the maximum range is 4.2 - 5.5 km.

between the safe zone and "PTK general area" there is the battle zone. the distance through the battle zone is not known. but the area of the battle area is 7 km^2.

if it is a square, the distance is 2.6km.

if the helis were taking off 1.4 km - 2.8 km away from the battle zone for safety reasons, still they come within the SAM reach!!

OTOH IF the helis were operating from an area north or south of the battle area, then it is CLOSER to the safe zone.

i first doubted the validity of the statement but calculation proove that LTTE INDEED fired from the safe zone.

I have a feeling that they saved one or two to score a propaganda point at an absolutely horrible, desperate time for them. Right now, SLA is not dependent on SLAF for mopping up the bastards. They may have even cannibalized the rest to keep one or two working.

Cheers!
