Military Intelligence has uncovered evidence to indicate that Velupillai Prabhakaran, Poddu Amman and many of the other senior members of the LTTE are holed-in along with the civilians. "Colonel" Swarnam's leg has been amputated and a large number of cadres in the "Lt. Colonel" rank have died in recent battles.
In many ways the second, third and fourth rung of the LTTE cadre has suffered heavily. "Colonel" Lakshman's wife, an LTTE "Doctor" and the Director of the LTTE's Keerthika Hospital has been killed. The Leader of the LTTE's Mine-laying unit (called Ponnammaan) has also been killed in fighting.
MIC has received credible intelligence that the LTTE was planning to hold on to the remaining area until end of April or May at the most. They expect Vaiko and other LTTE supporters from Tamil Nadu to win the forthcoming elections for the 15th Lok Sabha in India and a subsequent Indian Intervention in Sri Lanka.
Meanwhile a large band of hardcore Tigers and suicide bombers who infiltrated the 58 FDL recently have started their operations. Last week a patrol from 4 Special Forces brought in to re-instruct the 58 Division's FDL following the attack reported by us some weeks ago was targeted by an LTTE Black Tiger Commando unit.
A Corporal in a Special Forces-like uniform, bandana, beard and ALICE Pack was approaching the SF team. An experienced SF Sergeant leading the team, almost by instinct, saw through the plan. Without any questioning, the SF Sergeant opened fire felling the Corporal on the spot before he could approach the team. The Corporal turned out to be an LTTE suicide bomber with an ALICE pack packed full of explosives enough to wipe out an entire SF company.
On February 2nd, another SF soldier from 4 SF demonstrated a similar last minute, jaw-breaking stunt when he and is 12-man team was tasked to ambush LTTE suicide vehicles plying the Puthukudirippu Oddusudan road following a Cease-less Wave type of attack the Tigers launched on January 30th aimed at recapturing Mulaitivu on Independence Day 4th of February.
Having suddenly observed an cab and estimating that it was packed full of explosives, the SF soldier functioning in the RPG post launched an RPG-7 HEAT at the approaching cab at very close range. The cab exploded and the soldier sacrificed his life to save his teammates who were dug in safely inside foxholes behind him.

There was news that LTTE leadership is having a HSZ within the no fire zone which is prohibited to civilians. There was also news that SLAF used bombers again after suspending it for few weeks.
May be SLG wanted to justify using bombers to get LTTE leadership by this SAM story. This is only a speculation by me.

The final thrust into the LTTe area and also into the safe zone will be spearheaded by the 55div and its SF teams.
There may be limited air sorties, initially to debilitate LTTE defence lines, but there will not be any supersonic bomber activity.

Couple of weeks ago Brig. Shavendra Silva announced that end of LTTE will be counted on days rather than weeks. I immediately doubted that in the blog. Even now, there about 6-8 sq.km left for tigers to manure outside the safe zone. I wonder why 58 and TF8 cannot harvest in large numbers.
I know, SF does not want to gain territory before killing as many as possible. However, casualty figures on tiger’s side are not that great. SLA’s forward march also very slow.
If we can limit total remaining tiger territory to no fire zone, then tigers will be derived of water supply, food, medicine and arms. The either they have to release majority of civilians or die of thirst and hunger.
If someone says LTTE has not got SAM's then that person should check why he says that.
International arms markets are very functional and organized with thousands of legitimate, illegitimate and double acting players doing daily deals on paper, on credit, on cash as well as on favors.
If you have the right connections, you can certainly get the hands on to any weapons of any sorts with very limitations.
Take North Korea, East Timor or Erithria.. there are legitimate governments. Even take Ukrain (who was the supplier of few tons of C-4 explosives to LTTE) or North Korea. They are all legitimate governments.. and Cambodia or even take Somalia where guns and other weapons are just commodity.
A SAM is NOT like a big ship. If LTTE could smuggle in Artillery guns to thousands of Artillery pieces even under this kind of tight sea barricade conditions, why can not they bring in 10-20 SAMs?
One thing is for sure, LTTE has SAMs; either
1. they used them yesterday in desperation or
2. they have plenty (about 20), and want to flex them for a show
That is what happened! If I had SAMs and I was in the situation of LTTE, I would not use my precious SAMs on attacking two Bell 212s who were evacuating injured(Least, the Hinds pose more threat to LTTE than the Bell 212s).

SLDF conducted many sorties during last two months using supersonic fighters. If they has SAMs why didn’t they used it then?

no. they may have had them but didn't use against jets. MILs were not used on big pussy hideouts and other potentially SAM infested targets.
a MIG-27 travels at 375 m/s and in a dive bombing run lifts up at 200m/s. a SA-7 travels at 580 m/s for 10 sec and then the seek time expires. after another 5 sec it self explodes.
IF there is a 5 sec delay in launching it (VERY LIKELY to be more), the jet would have travelled 1,875 m. for the 10 seconds of pursuing, the RELATIVE speed of the missile is 205 m/s and the gap between the jet and the misslile will close in until 2,050 m (for 10 sec).
so if the plane is 175m away from the target (2050 - 1875) it is safe. the altitude itself is much higher and it will be safe!!!!
in a dive bombing case,
the RELATIVE speed of the missile is 380 m/s and the gap between the jet and the misslile will close in until 3,800 m (for 10 sec).
this can be easily bridged if launched in time. but if the total delay is 20 seconds or more, the jet would be still safe. unless tigers were ready to aim (SA-7 has a VERY SMALL seek angle) and fire within 20 sec when the jet was within the range (MAX 5.5km) it will be safe.
this is why tigers didn't waste their precious few SAMs.
i'm sure our attacks would have destroyed MOST of their weapons but a few would certainly remain.

I gather you have a very limited knowledge regarding helicopters and air to surface imaging equipment. The tactical advantage of having intel gathering above enemy lines is obvious and no doubt the SLAF would make sure that any flight of any nature in the area would be taking advantage the situation.
I suspect the LTTE would imagine the same and NOT want the SLA to have a detailed picture of the battleground... so of course they would try to take out the helicopters... there is also the added propaganda advantage and they need every advantage they can muster given their precarious and avoidable circumstance.

According to those ‘civilians’, of whom the world is so ‘gravely concerned’ about, that have run away from the clutches of the Tiger terrorist to the care of the Sri Lankan Government Forces, the terrorist leaders are freely moving around in the ‘no fire zones’ declared by the Sri Lankan Government. The purpose of declaring the no fire zones was so that the ‘civilians’ would be able to seek safety in the area. Then again, what’s good for the civilian is even better for the terrorists. The racist killer from Velvettithurai now residing in the Wanni jungles- Prabhakaran and the ex-common cop from Kirullapone- Nadesan know for certain that the Sri Lankan Government will not directly fire into the zone for fear of harming civilians. When Prabhakaran and Nadesan moved the ‘civilians’ from their villages into the jungle they were just a group of people held hostage; the group was collectively turned into a ‘human shield’ by the international ‘humanitarian industry’ which started braying like donkeys demanding that the Sri Lankan Government ceases military action on account of the presence of these people. Cornered, toothless and exposed, the LTTE was quick indeed to realise that the ‘people’ were the most effective body armour that now guaranteed their safety. In fact they are the most impregnable shield they could have ever wished for.
The Wanni ‘civilians’ are obviously a mixed bunch of people trapped in a situation mostly beyond their control due to various reasons. Some are family members of the ex- cadres who have been anointed as ‘Maveerar’ families; some of these families may have parted with precious family members to a ‘cause’ they were taught was going to bring them the Dravidastan that the Cholas of yesteryear lost. Some may have had their family members taken by force and have nothing much else left except to be around the tombstones that still remind them they once had loved ones. Then there are others who have family members presently fighting for the LTTE. Some others are cooks, seamstresses, builders, carpenters, barbers and menial labourers or provide some sort of services for the LTTE. Then there are those who remain only due to fear who will escape at the first opportunity. Those with the guns have most likely been told to shoot even their families if they had any ideas about escaping. According to the people who have now escaped Tiger clutches, there were instances where some cadres were crying and shooting at the same time at people who were running away. According to other reports from the escapees the Tigers are grabbing the free food and medicines sent to these areas for the civilians by the Sri Lankan Government and are re-selling them at black market prices- a kilo of black pepper is said to be going for Rs 4,000 in the jungle.
The thing is, it was a ‘human catastrophe’ all this time- for 25 long years- not only when the Sri Lankan Government Forces have come this close to eliminating the terrorist. Simple villagers living a subsistence life were brainwashed by a group of rabid radicals whose tendency to violence was on par with their racist ideology. Then the villagers had their children, fathers and brothers given arms training and deployed in the most gruesome acts of violence. Then it was the women’s’ turn. Young women were enlisted and taught to kill instead of nurturing. Family lives were shattered. There were now orphans and widows by the thousands and there were people with severe mental illness. Some orphaned girls ended up being raped and turned into suicide cadres or ended up as sex slaves for the fighters. Food production in the area became a thing of the past as the Tiger terrorists claimed every able bodied person to fight. Food supplies became even more limited as the terrorists started charging prohibitive ‘kappang’ they called taxes on goods that were being transported to the area. Slowly but surely Tigers themselves were running the shops selling the basic goods at black market prices. Malnutrition was now rife. Then there were NGOs/ INGOs coming into help. Some NGO/ INGOs converted non-Christians into Christianity for the promise of a plate of free food or for getting a family member out of ‘trouble’ with the terrorists. Others provided people with sanitary buckets with green lids and other useless paraphernalia but not a single school, clinic, road or a house was built for the people. People continued to live in crowded mud huts with no spiritual or material development. Without fail all the NGO/ INGO workers who were non-foreigners were Tamils, mostly from the area. Among them were LTTE cadres and spies operating in the guise of NGO/ INGO workers. Any civilian disobeying were tortured or murdered- most of the spies being the ‘humanitarian workers’ working for NGOs/ INGOs. Gruesome torture chambers were built in the villages where those who were suspected of being ‘traitors’ were tortured in the most inhumane ways. Children stopped going to school- some for fear of being enlisted. It was only the free electricity, water and medical facilities that continued to be provided by the Sri Lankan Government to the LTTE captive areas that sustained the villagers’ lives even to the present pitiful standard.
This human catastrophe was not noticed or reported on to the world at large by the NGOs/ INGOs that operated in these areas. In fact some of the oppressors worked for the NGO/ INGO themselves because the cover of NGO/ INGO status lavished on them the freedom of movement and logistical capability that the LTTE needed to operate its terror network. Ban ki Moon or his melancholy predecessor Kofi Annan never had any ‘concern’ expressed for either the destruction of civilian livelihoods or the lives; nor did they express any ‘concern’ on the complete absence of ‘development’ in these areas where so many ‘humanitarian’ groups worked so ‘tirelessly’ for such little output. UNHC for Human Rights did not know about these people then; nor did John Kerry, Hilary Clinton, Rev Desmond Tutu, Gordon Brown, Gareth Evans or Keith Vaz.
These ‘civilians’ had other VIP guests too. The Colombo based foreign Ambassadors and Foreign Ministers of some countries came in and out of these areas. The Americans, Norwegians, Germans, Japanese, Indians and Europeans came in and out of these areas for many a ‘peace manoeuvre’; but, none had a single bad word about the plight of the civilians then.
So, what then is different now? The ‘civilians’ are in exactly the same position. They have now had to leave their mud huts but they are the same tired, confused, grief stricken, bereaved, mentally ill, angry, hungry, destitute people they were for over a quarter of a century. The only thing that has now changed are the fortunes of the LTTE. The LTTE was ‘king’ before the battle of Mahaveli Oya (Mavil Aru) began. The LTTE supposedly ‘controlled’ ‘swathes’ of land and resources and ran a ‘de facto state’ then. Arms and ammunitions, air craft, sub marines were coming in ship loads and being delivered at the LTTE doors in Killinochchi with the compliments of the Tamil Diaspora. LTTE was dictating terms to the Sri Lankan Government through Sri Lanka’s foreign ambassadors or the Nordic Monitors while Anton Balasingham was making vile threats against the Sri Lankan Nation openly while living in England.
The international chorus of ‘concern for the civilians’ and the ‘impending human catastrophe’ started with the fall of Killinochchi and Mullaitivu. By then it was not the status of the civilians that had deteriorated markedly but that of the LTTE. May be I have a suspicious mind but I think that these howls are coming from interested parties to save the Tigers from elimination rather than to sane the ‘civilians’. It is these very same howls that have condemned these civilians to the status of a ‘human shield’; something that works well for the LTTE’s survival by ensuring that as long as the ‘civilians’ are there the Sri Lankan Government would not be able to fire at the LTTE. Had the international community stood by Sri Lanka in her battle against the LTTE may be the same number of ‘civilians’ as now could have died but Sri Lanka could have been cleared of terrorist occupation and well on the way to recovery weeks ago.
‘Civilian casualties’ is also known as ‘collateral damage’, when it suits those in Western societies. It was the US that first coined the now fashionable phrase “collateral damage” in relation to a situation of war- in specific, the then US Secretary of State Madeleine Albright, when quizzed by international media if the deaths of 500,000 Iraqi children due to US sanctions could possibly be justified, referred to those lives as “collateral damage”. She answered "I think this is a very hard choice, but the price - we think the price is worth it." This is the same league of people who are worried sick about civilian casualties in the North of Sri Lanka today. For a small country that has suffered the agony of terrorism in its most ruthless form for 26 years which has claimed 70,000 lives under most brutish circumstances already, such collateral damage would have also been a very hard choice- but the price would have been worth it.
No one thought of human shields in Iraq- in fact nobody had the time to think of human shields in Iraq when aerial bombs fell invoking ‘shock and awe’ killing hundreds and thousands of civilians. Opinion Research Business (ORB) poll conducted in August 12-19, 2007 estimated 1,033,000 violent deaths due to the Iraq War where 9% of that figure (or 92,970) were due to aerial bombardment. There were no calls for ceasefires then; no reconciliatory discussions, no envoys to mediate between the “warring parties” and no political solutions.
Even if you ignore what this embarrassing duplicity of the world’s most important power brokers has done to little Sri Lanka, what will come home to roost one day would be the very clear message that has been given to the international terror industry at large by the world powers. The message is that even when all is lost and it is crystal clear that one has lost the war it pays to hang on to as large a human shield as possible for survival rather than put down arms and surrender."

But there is plenty of good reason for the SL forces to poke and prod the enemy defences.
India shares some, not all, intel with Sri Lanka.
India has sophisticated sat capabilities.
SAM launches are very easily observed if you know where to look and when.
The Helicopters might well have been part of a simple bait and trap that allows India to see for itself that the LTTE are firing from the "safe" zone.
India passes the intel around to a few key players and the LTTE have one more nail in their coffin.
The result is a high value mission yield even if they SLAF does not get the ground data they seek.

we didn't use MILs on these targets. they were used MOST of the time for battle/troop support.
SLAF's clever use of various jets and mi-24/35s has been commendable. also their VERY appropriate upgrades.

If I want to stop recon, then I would attack the Beechcraft or UAVs and not the Bells.
The injured are already injured, and no point in attacking Bells to prevent air-lifting injured. Think about the situation now, the Tigers do not have a long life. Even of they killed 5000 Army, there won't be any difference to their fate. So, preventing air-lifting of casualty for two months won't make any difference.
[on the other hand, I would like SLARMY to establish a temporary field hospital little away from LTTE arty range closer to the battle-field, mainly to further stabilize any injured, before transferring to A'pura or Colombo].
My brother's theory is that they may have thought that Generals are traveling in the Bells. That's why they wanted to fire away $2M. And/Or combination that the SAM's lives were near the end, so that they wanted to use them anyways, so Bell was what they got.

SA-7s cannot practically attack the beechcraft due to altitude. SA-7s cannot go after a heat signature over 2.5 km above. beechcraft can take pix over this.
UAVs don't register a powerful enough heat signature to pursue. but can be fired upon.
AA guns are not easily "movable" AS shoulder fired SAMs. don't get me wrong - actually they are VERY mobile but they are truck/jeep mounted. a moving truck/jeep in the safe zone firing AA rounds would be a sure give away!!!

Read my post again. I am suggesting that the ability to observe and record the event exists and that if the SLAF coordinated their flights with the Indians the entire episode might well have been part of a clever ruse by the SL forces.
I believe the Indians have the capacity to have managed this and certainly the Americans have it.
The question is whether anyone who has the capability would work with the GoSL in this capacity... I suggest India would for a number of international and domestic reasons.
Yes... you need to look closely and at the right time and place but surely the SL forces are considering every means available to gather critical information.

Sri Lanka state enterprises a big burden: minister
March 25, 2009 (LBO) - Sri Lankan state enterprises come begging to the Treasury for money to pay staff salaries, instead of making profits and contributing to national development, a senior government minister said.
"One of the strange functions as the minister of finance in Sri Lanka is to handout checks at the end of the month to workers of 100 odd corporations that can't make the money to pay the salaries of these people," said Sarath Amunugama, a former finance minister and current deputy finance minister said.
"The treasury does not get anything, this is unacceptable."
Sri Lanka has powerful state trade unions which have propagated a philosophy that prevents re-structuring and privatization of state enterprises, despite running massive losses and giving poor service to the public.
In 2007, the Sri Lanka Transport Board, a state bus service got 3,654 million rupees as current subsidies and was slated to receive 4,936 million last year. Its capital subsidy was 2,610 million rupees in 2007 and a provisional 2,767 million in 2008.
Sri Lanka Railways, which has also resisted re-structuring, with the help of the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna, a Marxist-nationalist party, lost 4,767 million rupees in 2007 up from 4,311 million rupees in 2006, according to official data.
The two transport utilities are overstaffed and are also used to give subsidized travel to other state workers. Sri Lanka is reputed to have one of the biggest per capita state worker ratios in the world.
Amunugama was speaking at a South Asian state auditors' conference held in Colombo.
"The SAARC (South Asian Association for Regional Co-operation) as a regional grouping has the worst track record for badly managed public companies," minister Amunugama said.
"State owned corporations take money without giving anything back to the treasury. This is unacceptable."
He said in countries like China, surpluses from state corporations are used to finance capital expenditure and their managers held accountable.
"In China if the Chairman could not give profits to the treasury every year he was kicked out and if they consistently went on not giving that (profits), that particular institution was shut down," Amunugama said.
"In Sri Lanka the treasury is called upon to pay these public corporations."
In Sri Lanka the post of chairman of a state enterprise is usually given as a political favour and entire boards sacked when a new administration takes over.
The products and services of state enterprises are usually under-priced under political pressure to win votes and losses financed from state bank loans for some time and then with straight treasury handouts.
The treasury also has to bailout state banks with people's money after the loan goes bad.

also there is NO realtime satellite imaging capability SL can access to.

There are rich Sinhalese as well as Tamils alike, living, doing businesses, learning and carrying on with their daily activities in Colombo and suburbs. Anybody can purchase land, build houses, carry on with business etc. On the other hand, there are poor Sinhalese and Tamils alike as well. If it is a situation such as only rich Sinhalese and poor Tamils exist in the country, one can clearly establish that Sinhalese has been exploiting Tamils and enriching themselves while the successive Sri Lankan governments were facilitating this. However, the case is different. There are quite a number of rich Tamils as I pointed out as well as Sinhalese. So has these Sri Lankan governments really been so pro Sinhalese? I don’t think so.
Majority of the Sri Lankan Tamils as well as Sinhalese are poor. Successive governments have not done enough to bring the poverty levels down while developing the country. Problems are common to Sinhalese as well as Tamils. Life was becoming harder for both races. Not only one race.
So why it is only Tamils are fighting? That’s the misconception they were fed with by the Tamil politicians while Sinhalese politicians also propagated lies to retain their power. No, the governments were not pro Sinhalese. They were not pro people, irrespective of they are Sinhalese or Tamil. That’s the problem. But Tamil politicians spun a cocoon around a common problem, of course with a bit of help from power hungry Sinhalese politicians. Separating Tamils and Sinhalese makes it difficult for the nation to take a strong stance against corrupted politicians. So LTTE was created as a result of this North-South political pact to keep the politicians and supporters (Sinhalese and Tamils) rich while rest of the country poor.
So LTTE is a part of the problem and not at all the solution. However, today, the ground reality is changing. People in the South as wells as North are slowly understanding the truth. The political leadership of the country is fighting head to head with nation’s old political strategy of ruling Sinhalese and Tamils separate and using this as the excuse not to develop the country, South as well as North. Even though we are yet to see how the future would unfold, destroying synthetic separatist forces is a step in the right direction. LTTE is not only Tamils. It is proven that it has the support of Sinhalese, Tamil, Muslim, Norway, American, English etc., who need to keep the evil separatist thinking alive. So LTTE is not natural manifestation as a result of Sinhalese exploiting Tamils. It is synthesized by Sinhalese and Tamil politicians who want to rule a weaker nation. What better way to avoid accountability and responsibility than this?
By defeating LTTE, we defeat the total Sinhalese and Tamil political order who intended to deploy the resources to themselves without developing the country. We destroy forces who gained benefits from Sinhalese and Tamils being separated. We destroy all the excuses which the politicians can give in the future to keep the corruption alive. We destroy the results of political paradigm of separating Sinhalese and Tamils for one’s own economic benefits.

I've seen F-18 flying over the tree line in a airshow. That was fantastic. It did a high speed run with flips and a slow speed run. Any one can compare the size of F-18 and the F-11(is that the one SLAF got?). Just could not figure out from where it came and to where it gone.
The sound and the speed of this flight may be bit similer to the SLAF jets.
