Military Intelligence has uncovered evidence to indicate that Velupillai Prabhakaran, Poddu Amman and many of the other senior members of the LTTE are holed-in along with the civilians. "Colonel" Swarnam's leg has been amputated and a large number of cadres in the "Lt. Colonel" rank have died in recent battles.
In many ways the second, third and fourth rung of the LTTE cadre has suffered heavily. "Colonel" Lakshman's wife, an LTTE "Doctor" and the Director of the LTTE's Keerthika Hospital has been killed. The Leader of the LTTE's Mine-laying unit (called Ponnammaan) has also been killed in fighting.
MIC has received credible intelligence that the LTTE was planning to hold on to the remaining area until end of April or May at the most. They expect Vaiko and other LTTE supporters from Tamil Nadu to win the forthcoming elections for the 15th Lok Sabha in India and a subsequent Indian Intervention in Sri Lanka.
Meanwhile a large band of hardcore Tigers and suicide bombers who infiltrated the 58 FDL recently have started their operations. Last week a patrol from 4 Special Forces brought in to re-instruct the 58 Division's FDL following the attack reported by us some weeks ago was targeted by an LTTE Black Tiger Commando unit.
A Corporal in a Special Forces-like uniform, bandana, beard and ALICE Pack was approaching the SF team. An experienced SF Sergeant leading the team, almost by instinct, saw through the plan. Without any questioning, the SF Sergeant opened fire felling the Corporal on the spot before he could approach the team. Having suddenly observed an cab and estimating that it was packed full of explosives, the SF soldier functioning in the RPG post launched an RPG-7 HEAT at the approaching cab at very close range. The cab exploded and the soldier sacrificed his life to save his teammates who were dug in safely inside foxholes behind him.

Mar 27, Colombo: A top United Nation relief official yesterday expressed his concern over the civilians trapped in the no-fire zone of Northern Sri Lanka and appealed the rebel group Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) to allow the civilians to leave the war zone.
Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs, John Holmes told the reporters after an interactive Security Council discussion on Sri Lanka the LTTE continue forced recruitment of civilians within the combat zone, and is not allowing civilians out of the area. He described the situation as "extremely worrying."
"Our first appeal is to the LTTE to let the civilians out in a safe and orderly fashion," Holmes said.
Reiterating a call for a temporary pause in fighting to allow much-needed relief in and to allow people to leave, Holmes called on the Sri Lankan government to do all it can to avoid civilian casualties and not to use heavy weapons in the area.
Sri Lankan military has given the assurance that it will not use heavy weapons in the fighting. However the Sri Lankan government says the LTTE has placed their heavy artillery and mortar guns among the civilian shelters in the no-fire zone and fire at the troops.
Permanent Representative of the United Kingdom, Sir John Sawers, commenting on the situation in Sri Lanka to the media said it is clear that it is the LTTE preventing civilians from leaving. "We condemn their action," he said.
UK Representative said the Sri Lanka is not on the formal agenda of the Security Council but the Council remains concerned.
Responding to the questions from media Permanent Representative of Sri Lanka Mr. H. M. G. S. Palihakkara said his government's priority now is to get the trapped civilians out and not to proceed a military offensive as the military did before to liberate the rest of the area. Mr. Palihakkara said the military is not firing any heavy weapons now as they have come so close to the no-fire zone and militarily it is not possible to fire heavy weapons into the area. He said the government is ready to workout a pause in fighting or any other modality to get the civilians out if the LTTE is willing to let them leave.

To your list of options I would add amphibious landings. It might be a combination of many different types of assaults launched simultaneously. ITN yesterday showed some of the mechanized infantry vehicles practicing for this purpose.
Some people have suggested a siege but that's long-drawn out and will not affect the LTTE since they are fed courtesy of the GOSL.
The armed forces have shown that they are not short of creativity, and because this is the last battle risks above the norm will likely be taken.

I would never compare SL to U.S. U.S. would not be the Richest Country of the world for that long. If for some reason China pulls the carpet under them, U.S would be a basket case like Argentina. And China is already signalling that.

I like to elaborate on something Mr. Ranil Wickramasinghe has said recently. He said all ministers talk of the war rather than concentrating and working, and talking on their own subjects.
You can discount this as an utterance of an unpatriotic leader of UNP. But this is what I think a genuine Sri Lankan should look at it.
Mr. Gotabhaya Rajapakse is passionately conducting a campaign against a terrorist group that was considered unbeatable. He has to encounter internal and external resistance including the governments of large and powerful countries and massive campaign of lies and deception. He is going on relentless and all of us can see he is succeeding. He picks the best people life SF and he has a vision, goals, targets, time lines and he monitors everything. Although one could argue he lacks diplomacy in interviews and losing is temper etc. it shows how passionate he is about what he is doing.
Let’s assume the minister in charge of ports or roading or education, or fisheries or agriculture takes that kind of passionate approach to his own field. He can go ahead with full steam without any internal or any external pressures or international community trying to meddle or without protests of any Diasporas or any misinformation campaigns.
I know there is only one GR, but if any of the other ministers are at least 50% passionate and 50% energetic as GR they could achieve wonders in their fields for the benefit of the country.
Many countries will not give arms to GR to fight the war. But almost of all developed countries and expatriate Sri Lankans will give us their fullest support, funds and expertise etc. to for example significantly upgrade our higher education system or roading network or any area of subject.
Let’s assume that there were 5 ministers like who are excelling like GR in the cabinet. See how many achievements can UPFA talk about during an election? It reminds me of Lalith (Mahapola and Port), Premadasa (Housing & Roading), Gamini (Mahaweli) during JRJ time.
Apart from doing that all ministers are doing is talking of the war, and carrying on regardless.
May triple gem protect GR not only because we need him to finish the war, also because if he sits in the presidential chair we can see the NEW SRI LANKA we are only talking about in political pamphlets.

I don't know where your economic forecast comes from for the US, but without a major and innovative tech driven economic upheaval, there is very little chance for the US to recover its former,
based on nothing prosperity.

You shouldn't trust those crystal balls made in China.

It is true that GR is doing a great job as Secretary of Defence but do not think all achievements are done by himself alone. MR is the key and SF has done his role well.
Most of all, our brave generals, brigadiers, colonels, majors, captains, sergeants and ordinary soldiers kept their life on the line to achieve present success.
I do not say GR cannot do the job of MR, he may do it better. However, we cannot say without doubt from what we know, at least not yet.
Most important thing is, the next executive president of Sri Lanka has to do better than MR. That is what it demands right now!
Is there a possibility for some kind of Auditing process be placed in these INGOs in Sri Lanka, so that we knows the amount of money they receive and how it is spent. We should not allow these NGO to operate without this, otherwise we will have this disaster again.
Also they should be forced to publish a list of personels abd the projects they are undertaking on the web. These won't take that much money and this will create a few jobs as well. As Obama said, transparency would be the best.

If we can encourage our government departments to put their projects and costs online and give us some kind of statistics, we would able to reduce corruption and waste. I don't know whether this is a possibility as I have no idea how ministries work.
Letter from a sinhala priest identifying true situation in Vanni:
Here is what I experienced during my short stay at Vavuniya. There are things that I can't write.
The situation is very very critical.Hope to go there again soon
This is a brief account of what I experienced during my short visit to Vavuniya from the 24th to 26 of February. I had the opportunity see the camps where IDPs are kept and meet some persons and go to the Vavuniya hospital with some priests who are also displaced and have come from Vanni area.
More than 30000 displaced persons who had come from Vanni are given temporary shelter in govt. schools and other buildings.. According to priests and nuns who were permitted to enter these places, (now some are given special pass to visit these camps) the members of the families are dispersed among the camps and reunion of them is not allowed at the moment. There are elderly and pregnant mothers, mothers with newly born babies who should be given special care, attention and place which Fathers and sisters are ready to provide but waiting for a positive response from the authorities which they say has to be given from the ministry of defense in Colombo .
As buildings are not sufficient to provide accommodations to such a big number, some temporary tents have been built in play grounds in the scorching sun where no one can stay during the day. In some cases there are two or three families in one tent. The govt. through all media constantly announces that every thing is ready and asks the people caught up in Vanni to come to Vavuniya promising them all facility and security there.
But it is very clear that govt. is not ready at all to accommodate if those people come to Vavuniya as they are unable to provide basic facilities to those who have already come. Except the places, every other basic need such as food, water, sanitary, clothes, medicine are provided by the NGOs. Still they are ready to provide whatever they can but due to very strict restrictions imposed by the govt. they are unable to do so.
These cannot be called as camps for displaced people rather prisons or still concentration camps heavily guarded by armed soldiers and covered with barb wires. We were not allowed to enter any of these camps. While we were standing in front of one of the camps on the main road, behind barb wires which were removed when UN officer John Holmesvisited the camps and returned to the same places immediately after he left Vavuniya, a soldier came and made a sign with his hand to a lady (mother) standing beside us to move away from that place.
As she began to move slowly soldier yelled at her saying â€Å“Don’t you understand Sinhala- Sinhala therenne nadda?â€� Then he pointing his finger to us and asked the officer at the gate in signs what’s to be done with us.
Then he approached me and asked whether I know Sinhala thinking that I am a Tamil priest. As I replied, yes, he asked whether there is any relation of mine in the camp. I told him I am going from camp to camp to find out whether my family members and relations are in the camps. But how could I find when as you don’t allow us to go in and still you chase away us not allowing us to stay out side far away from the camp. Then he politely said â€Å“what can we do father, we are carrying out the orders coming from the top.â€�
Later somebody sarcastically said these are orders from Rajapaksa family and which is also the truth. One of the priests told me that his parents are in a camp but he is not allowed to visit them. As we also moved away from that place, we approached that lady and asked whether she has anybody in the camp.
This was her reply:
â€Å“I came to Vavuniya some months ago and husband was in Vanni. Now he has come from that side and is in this camp. First day I saw him, spoke to him staying out side but he did not understand what I said. I found that he can’t hear and he is deaf. Today I came to show him some photographs of our grand children who live abroad. (She showed us some photos of the children). But I don’t see him or unable to contact him. Soldiers chase me away� she told in tears and with utter helplessness.
Even the worst criminals have the right to see and speak to their family members and friends. If then why these innocent helpless people are not allowed to see their loved ones and detained them behind barb wires as criminals?
Isn̢۪t it a grave violation of their basic human rights?
Isn̢۪t it because that for them every Tamil is a terrorist or suspected be so?
Is it difficult to understand that they are being treated so inhumanly for the mere fact that they were born as Tamils in this country?
Here are some painful and agonizing experiences revealed by some injured persons whom I met in the hospital
A 23 years old young girl
We all were in the bunker without food for the whole day and came out to eat something. Then suddenly shells fell and we all got injured. I am without a leg and a hand. Brother and sister were also injured and they are too in the hospital. Father̢۪s whereabouts are not known.
20 years old seriously injured young girl:
While I was bathing shells fell around our place. One of the brothers and I were critically injured. Another brother and a sister are in Vanni and do not know what has happened to them. My father died some time ago. Her mother is there to look after her. She has got 3s for A/L and now worried about her studies.
26 years graduate, a voluntary teacher:
We were all in the bunker whole night and came out in the morning to go to the announced safe zone. Then suddenly shells fell on us. Now the mother is with me. We do not know where my father, brother and sister are.
This is what I heard from a nun:
There is a boy who has lost his both hands in Mannar hospital. He got through his O/L with 10 As. Parents are there to look after him. But now army wants to send away the parents. Then who will be there to help this helpless boy who is still under treatments..
I met a young pregnant mother on the corridor sitting with her 6 year old daughter. She has lost toes of her one leg and three fingers in one hand. Daughter had wounds all over her body. Husband and the other two children are in Vanni. She is worried that if they are sent to the camp, how she can manage with her small daughter as she is unable to attend to her own work.
Priests and nuns are ready to take those pregnant mothers and mothers with new born babies as they need special care and attention but the authorities have not given a positive response yet.
This is another experience of a priest:
I met a small boy and a girl in the hospital. They are from the parish where I was, before I came to Vavuniya. The boy requested an apple and the girl some grapes. So I came out and went in with apple and grapes for those children. I was stopped at the gate by a policeman and asked to hand over my N.I.card and then to go in. I refused to hand over but showed it to him. So he could see that I am from Jaffna and shouted at me asking why you are here. In return I asked him from where are you. I told him I am a Sri Lankan and I have the right to be any where in this country. He continued to shout at me. So I asked him not to shout and if you don̢۪t allow I will go back without giving these apple and grapes to those two kids. I told him please remember if you and your children face such calamity and if there is nobody to help you how would be your position. He stopped shouting and I came back with grapes and apple.
He further continued to say with much sadness and pain, when I see the children here in the church I remember children in Vanni where I was working. Immediately after mass they all come running to hold my hands and then to say that I touched father̢۪s hands first. I do not know where those children are now. What crime these children have committed to be abandoned and treated in such a brutal and inhuman way. When we see the tragedy of the children can any one say a word in favour of this brutal war?
Can we who live in the South especially as church leaders be indifferent and keep silent before this genocide?
This is again an experience of a nun:
A child who is with the mother in the camp came running to see his father outside the gate who came to see them. The mother wanted to give him to the father over the gate to be kissed. But a soldier chased him away. Seen this heart breaking incident Sister approached that soldier and asked if it is your child what would you do? Then he immediately called the father and allowed him to kiss the son.
How can we who have not experienced the gravity of this brutal war at all, who have not travelled at least to Mannar and Vavuniya, who have not met and spoken to victims of this stupid war, justify and make statements in favour of it.? How can we be indifferent and take it so lightly or remain completely unaware of this human disaster?
From all these, are we not indirectly saying to the war mongers that we are not against war, we are with you, we believe what you say and not interested in what the Tamils say and finish the so called humanitarian war (annihilation) you have waged against them?
Here is a horrendous experience of a young person whom I met. I will not write down everything I heard as I still want to see these people alive.
So many dead bodies of young boys and girls were brought under the tag â€Å“terrorists killed in battleâ€� In the post mortem it revealed that all the girls were raped. There were clear signs to prove who they were but buried as terrorists. Though I have no right to ask any question I just inquired that person what have you got to say. With full of tears in eyes replied â€Å“We may not born as Tamils in this world again, especially as Tamil women.â€�
There is so much to be written and that is again the agony and the tears of our Tamil brothers and sisters who cry for life and freedom which is their RIGHT.
Right to live in their own homes and land as true citizens in this country with human dignity.
Is it not the state terror of the successive Sinhala rulers treated the Tamils so brutally and suppressed their just demands?
At least now stop our petty arguments to show that we are neutral or do not take a side which reveals our hypocrisy. We believe in a God who takes the side of the oppressed. Hence we have a moral right to take the side of the oppressed Tamils.
The need of the hour is our SYMPATHY AND CONCERN

This is a nice tearful tale, and I am very surprised that you are disseminating this kind of LTTE propaganda, WITHOUT COMMENT to place it in the proper perspective for what it is: The vanguard of the effort to further demonize the GOSL and the people of Sri Lanka.
This article ignores the reality of what has happened here:
1. These people were traumatized by the LTTE, not the SLDF who rescued them.
2. Many of these people cheered and supported the murder and ethnic cleansing practiced by the LTTE when they thought they were only going to BENEFIT from those atrocities. They thought they were immune to these very same atrocities that are now being practiced upon them by the LTTE. Didn't they know that what goes around comes around too?
3. Many of these catholic priests, now shedding copious crocodile tears, worked hand-in-glove with the LTTE to promote their Catholic agenda. They felt their catholic faith can grow faster under the LTTE led Tamils, rather than in the Buddhist majority South, where people do not convert as easily. These priests went to Jaffna, to India, to Rome and where-have-you to destabilize Sri Lanka. I am not saying that the entire Catholic Church was involved in this, but a significant fraction of them did do that...there is irrefutable proof of that. It seems to me that they are still pursuing that agenda now, under the same guise of compassion for the needy; the same ploy the NGOs and INGOs used so effectively to help the LTTE grow.
4. These IDPs are now much better off in these camps than they were as LTTE hostages. They are being FED, HOUSED and MEDICALLY TREATED, all free of charge at tax-payer expense, albeit not in luxurious surroundings. Many people in Sri Lanka don't have these benefits and must pay their own way. Sri Lanka is a poor country, we are doing better in taking care of these people, than in ANY OTHER TERRORIST WAR AFFECTED COUNTRY in the world, including US invaded Iraq!
5. The lack of contact with their loved ones, and lack of freedom to go looking for them, is a result of LTTE's activities...not that of the GOSL. Hiding among them are the TERRORISTS and the SUICIDE BOMBERS of the future, so they can't be be released willy-nilly to spread throughout Sri Lanka as this article advocates. It takes time to evaluate who is who. The GOSL certainly has a duty towards the IDPs, and an even greater duty to the remaining innocent people of Sri Lanka who need protection from terrorists. Already, the killing of innocent Sinhala farmers has begun. It seems to me, these people who write such articles WANT TO ENABLE THE HIDDEN LTTE CADRE THE OPPORTUNITY TO PLY THEIR TERRORIST TRADE AND DESTABILIZE LANKA AGAIN!
6. This article relates heart-rending stories of the wounded, the displaced, the separatred families, as if that is the fault of the GOSL. No, it is the LTTE that ousted them from their homes, pushed them from one village to the next, enslaved them as laborers to build defenses, forcibly conscripted their children for use as cannon fodder, emplaced artillery and high-explosives among civilians, stole for LTTE use the food and supplies delivered free to them, charged exorbitant prices for the free food, and ultimately denied them the FREEDOM TO ESCAPE FROM the WAR ZONE.
7. We will see more of these kinds of articles, as more and more NGOs are granted access. In my view, NO NGOs and INGOs of any kind, Catholic Priests included, should be given access to these camps. The government should launch a massive government program staffed with government employees to help the IDPs. The sole role of NGOs and INGOs should be to deliver any funds and supplies they raise to the government for the government personnel to distribute to the IDPs.
We have HAD ENOUGH of NGO and INGO interference creating mischief and destabilizing our country.

Many innocent Sri Lankan Tamils don’t feel safer here either. A Sri Lankan Tamil office worker said that her parents living in Colombo were much safer than her family living in Toronto. What else do you expect in Toronto with over 105 nationalities living in the City? They all want to have their own and be their own. Today, India boasts of a Great Prime Minister and Indian Sikh, a Sikh Army Commander and more. There is no cry for an Independent Sikh state in India or burning of the Indian flag. But, the cry is here and the Indian flag is insulted, burned far away in Toronto. Terrorists are almost defeated in Sri Lanka but LTTE terrorism continues right here in Toronto. It will never end here and the law enforcement authorities are getting worried.

A white Canadian who works at the same building the Consulate is situated said, “It looks like all the troublemakers from your country are here. Think I should go to Sri Lanka now for a holiday” He said it having got fed up of continuous protests by the LTTE in Canada.

But, the biggest tragedy is it is the lawmakers here who had contributed in making Toronto a war zone. Some still do and they try to poke their noses, fingers and legs into Sri Lanka whilst living thousands of miles away in Toronto. I don’t see these opposition lawmakers speaking on behalf of their people here or trying to solve their day to day problems. Instead they are trying to ‘solve’ the ‘problems’ in Sri Lanka. I am puzzled at times and wonder if these people represent Sri Lanka or Canada. I seriously think that they should be sent to Sri Lanka to represent Canada in Sri Lanka and send the Sri Lankan lawmakers to Canada to represent Sri Lanka in Canada. One must be here to see how hard some of them ‘work’ to ‘help’ Sri Lanka for the sake of a few more votes. Whilst living in the war zone Toronto, they want to offer humanitarian assistance to Sri Lanka, help harvest paddy fields, build canals, climb trees, paint buildings, provide clothes and even read from story books ( must be some fairy tails, striped ones at that) to Sri Lankans. Here is a dispensable personal experience. A relative of mine had a Tamil domestic helper and one day found out she was in pain. When asked why, she said her husband poured acid on her down under. Until that day, I had never heard such a pathetic crime. Modern Tamil violence is attributed to violent movies made in TN.
There are number of good Buddhist monks and number of very bad ones. The ahimsa in Buddhism has some impact on Sinhalese.
