1. if LTTE could not take down low flying,slow flying,almost stationary targets like SLAF Helicopters(I think Bell transporters)...the skill level of of the operators is low...good..

Perhaps he is one of those orphans from '83 who was raised to be a fighter and has no family alive.
Perhaps his family are afraid of repercussions from the GoSL and are worried that a trip to Colombo will end in a white van ride.

EAST: BARELY twenty-four hours after terrorist infiltrators butchered five farmers in DEHIWATTE, TRINCOMALEE Tuesday (24) late night, another similar type late night assassination of four more farmers was reported from MANIKDENIYA in KADAWATHAMADUWA area in WELIKANDA.
Four innocent civilians working on their threshing floor in the paddy fields were indiscriminately fired upon and mercilessly killed by those suspected Tiger terrorists.
Four more sustained severe injuries in the incident when armed assassins directed fire on them Wednesday (25) late evening around 10.50 p.m.
M. SOMADASA (44), a member of the Civil Defense Force, M.SUGATH CHANDRASIRI (27), K.A SARATH KUMARA (37) and K. DHARMASENA (42) fell dead on the spot due to gunshots.
Injured NILANTHA SAMARAWEERA (25), INDIKA WICKRAMASINGHA (24), NISHANTHA WIJESINGHA (27) and NILANTHA WEERAKUMARA (16) were admitted to POLONNARUWA Hospital in critical condition.
A search and clear operation has commenced in the area.

"COLOMBO, March 26 (Reuters) - Sri Lanka's military on Thursday said it has one kilometre left to go before trapping the Tamil Tigers separatists in a no-fire zone, along with thousands of civilians at grave risk in the 25-year war's final act.
President Mahinda Rajapaksa, under pressure to craft a political deal, has called for a meeting with parliamentarians allied with the Tigers but they have refused until the government resolves the humanitarian crisis faced by civilians trapped in the fighting.
"Now the area is 21 sq km (8 sq miles) and only 1 sq km left other than the safe zone," military spokesman Brigadier Udaya Nanayakkara said.
The Tigers also tried a counterattack on Wednesday, which soldiers repelled. A total of 30 rebels were killed altogether on Wednesday, he said.....MORE

UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon confirmed from New York this morning that Miss Clark was his preferred candidate for the role of United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) head, which puts her in charge of a multi-billion dollar budget.
Prime Minister John Key said he was pleased to her the news.
"The Government fully endorsed her application for this position, which will make her the number three in the UN.
"This will be the highest diplomatic position held by a New Zealander, and I think we can all take pride in her significant achievement," he said.
Mr Key, who has been publicly expressing confidence in Miss Clark's ability to carry out such a role, said she was a highly regarded New Zealander who had international credibility.
"Her leadership experience will help ensure she can mobilise resources and represent the UNDP effectively."

"London, March 26 (IANS) The body overseeing the running of charities in Britain has launched a probe and expressed serious concern after a terrorist camp in Bangladesh was reported to have been funded by a Britain-based charity.
'We are working with relevant law enforcement and other agencies to investigate the allegation that terrorist activity is connected with the charity,' said Andrew Hind, chief executive of the Charity Commission.
'The matter is of serious concern to us, and we are taking this action given the gravity of the matter, the public interest and the need to protect charity work and funds. We intend, as is normal procedure, to publish a statement of the results of the inquiry setting out our findings once the inquiry is completed,' he added.
Bangladeshi security services said the Green Crescent orphanage and madrassa - Islamic seminary - on Bhola island was being used as a terrorist training camp.
Anti-terrorist police found explosives, bomb-making equipment, 3,000 rounds of ammunition, small arms, remote control devices, walkie-talkies, army uniforms and extremist literature in the madrassa.
The Green Crescent is a British-registered charity that was set up in 1998 by British and Bangladeshi students, according to its website, which says it has other projects in Bangladesh and Pakistan.
The man heading the charity, Faisal Mosafa, is said to be a Stockport-based chemist who was given a suspended sentence for trying to board a plane at Manchester airport last year with a pistol in his suitcase.
He had been twice cleared of conspiring to cause explosions - in 1996 and 2002, The Guardian newspaper reported.
Bangladeshi security forces say they believe the Green Crescent seminar in Bhola island was used by the Jamaat-ul-Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB), a banned militant group."

55 and 58 were watching the LTTE safe zone. LTTE did some counter attacks and FDL taken back. I don't know the situation now, may be SLA advanced again. Some SLA elements operate very close to safe zone. Issue is LTTE cadres also infiltrate PTK area.
The words 'stand-off' convey a meaning that is contrary to what is happening.
When the SLA closed in on the LTTE in PTK, the likelihood of civillian casualities in a all out assault rose to unacceptable levels. An assault at that time would have given a unique propaganda value to the LTTE supporters, even though the LTTe itself would be a lot of rotting corpses by then. That would have adversely affected the SLG's position in the eyes of the IC, some of who are still trying to find a way to place blame with the SLG.
Instead the SLDF opted for a slower, attritional strategy,which unleashed small team attcks. This in turn compelled the LTTe to lose control over the civillians and led to the escape of thousands, often suffering miserably in the hands of the LTTE in the process.
This strategy has paid dividends, since the world is now seeing the LTTE for what it is and there is plenty of scope for the SLG for a decisive strike into the last pocket of resistance.
When the military planners decides it is time, the LTTE rank and file will be swiftly either overpowered or decimated, prompting capitulation by the middle level commanders.
Approx 30 a day kill rate will seriously erode the LTTE's ability to fight back even before the army moves in.
The number of civillians in the no fire zone is estimated anywhere between 10,000-15,000 while the LTTE fighting cadre at 600 max. Auxilliaries (civillians under arms) about 2,000.

the length is the NFZ is 12km. it should be on average 1.7 km wide for it to be 20 km^2 which is true.

Yeah, that is correct. But hopefully it disappears as well. As few has mentioned they helped MR, as well as stopping federalism e.t.c. e.t.c. But the total destruction they did during 71 and the eighties is much much more, which might also have contributed to the Tamil Uprising. We don't need political revolutions any more. What we need is political stability and peace in the country. Sooner the JVP disapears better it is for the Sri Lankans. You might be right, that the buddhist monks should not do politics. But having said that, the monks are the only reason that we are Sri Lankans. I know this might be something wrong to say when there are a large community of Christians and Muslims. But being Buddhists are the reason that we have been persecuted for more than 2500 years. If we were Hindus or Chritians there would be no Tamil problems. The west would come and kill all the Tigers just to save their Christian Brethrens. Also monks are the reason we have such a hight fighting spirits. There are two paths for Buddhist, either being pacifist like Tibetians or fighters like Sinahelese or Thais.
Therefore Buddhism and Sinahelese are one and the same. When one dies, there is no point in the other. Therefore when Buddhism dies in Sri Lanka, I would not be a Sri Lankan. The country would have no meaning to me.

It is true that through out the Sri Lanka history Buddhist monks were vociferous in invasions and external threats. Advising the government is totally different being part of the governing or law making body. Parliament and politics were never part of practicing Buddhism.

But if the tiger terrorists went to that extent to import a very expensive coffin for her, you would expect to see a grandiose grave of her burial. We have seen Soosai’s’s son’s elaborate tomb but where is this expensive tomb of Soosai’s wife if that is true?. Where is Vesa Balla’s Tomb then? I guess They whisked his corpse away with Norway’s help to preserve it together with Balasingham’s corpse possibly in Norway to resurrect it at a later date after the mythical Elam is realized (in their mythical dreams).
5. When all the news media started reporting on Vesa Ball’s possible death, the Tamil Tigers appealed to Mrs.Chandrika Kumaratunga(a genuine traitor), the then president to order the news media to stop speculating of his death and that if they do not, threatened to walk away from peace talks. If Vesa Balla was alive, all they had to do was to gat the bastard to appear on News cameras. Guess the double was not ready with the cosmetic surgery.
6. Balasingham after the tsunami visited Sri Lanka only once to pose with the so called Thalaivar(did I spell the dog tag right) as he felt insulted to pose and please a fake double

Yeah, defence personal who have done tour of duties in enemy terrotories would understand how good the SLA. No other country would take casualty save enemy supporters. Look at U.S.A, they send missiles to Pakistan and just kill Civilians. They are directly or indirectly caused death of more than 600, 000 Iraqis. We are purposely taking casualties knowing very well, most of the Civilians we save would not give a damn about SLA and their Sacrifices.

At the same time GSL can announce their new name for the remaining part of the operations as "Hostage Rescue Operation" if they don't like "Humanitarian Operation". [Actually the real "humanitarian operation" starts when SLA enters the safe zone.] Also, GSL can rename "no fire zone" as some thing else if required. I like to live in a "NO TIGER ZONE".

Once, all remaining area captured by SLA except no fire zone; we have few options to consider.
1. Declare anther safe zone of 10 sq.km and attack remaining 10 sq.km;
2. Withdraw gradually by 10 sq.km and declare new safe zone is that and attack coastal belt completely; or
3. Give 72 hour cease fire to release civilians and after invade safe zone with limited small arm attacks.
4. Stop offensives and cut off all supplies including food, water and medicine.
Each option has its merit as well as consequences;
Option 1 - safer but international outcry will go to crescendo and finally to a climax. Civilians will suffer more. Pressure on remaining tiger cadres will go over the roof. Our casualties will be high.
Option 2 – Giving territory back but after capturing coastal line; we can seal all out side contacts. Sea tigers will be non effective, rescue missions by foreign forces more difficult. International community will appreciate the breathing space given. Our casualties will be low.
Option 3 – International pressure will go away to come back after 72 hours. Pressure on LTTE will be two fold. Our casualties also go high. Collateral damages also will be high.
Option 4 – International pressure will go down with ceasefire but will be doubled due to supply cut-off. More pressure on both civilians and LTTE. Civilians may rebel against LTTE when things go unbearable. Some cadres of LTTE will help civilians to escape and come out with them.
My preference is option – 4, what is your preferred option?
