The pro-LTTE media have consistently claimed that the Sri Lanka Air Force is bombing civilian settlements inside the NFZ. This is a baseless lie.
Aerial sorties are indeed carried out, but in carefully identified locations of the NFZ. The area being targetted is between Mullaivaikkal and the Vattuwan bridge north of Mullaitivu Town. This area is the confirmed location of the LTTE leader Prabhakaran. Not a single civilian is allowed entry into this area.
The other location being bombed is in Valairmadam where an LTTE earth bund has been constructed in recent times. The SLAF has got comprehensive evidence to disprove claims of targeting civilian settlements based on UAV footage.
As of today, close to 200,000 civilians had escaped to government controlled areas. 3000 escaped yesterday while today was an unprecedented low of only 50 as operations against the LTTe has died down. Civilian escapees are high when the Army engages the LTTE.
Given the 10km2 area, the self-isolation of the LTTE leadership and the now 40,000+ civilians in the area, the likelihood of actually hitting the civilians is low. Add to this the government has ceased the use of all heavy weapons.
Sea tigers
Despite 4 Naval cordons Sea Tiger activities have not ceased. Tensions were rising in the Army that the LTTE leader might attempt escape by sea. This possibility cannot be ruled out.
In a normal sea tiger VIP/VVIP movement, very much like any other VIP/VVIP movement, there is a convoy carrying the 'main body' (VIP/VVIP) and the security detail (Escort cars, outriders etc).
The outer periphery of the security detail in a sea tiger movement comprises of fast-moving fiberglass boats. Towards the inner core there are suicide boats and in the middle there is the VIP/VVIP body. If the outer periphery is breached, the suicide boats will engage and the 'main body' will escape along with remaining suicide boats until reaching safety.
A scenario like this could unfold in the event Prabhakaran makes a dash for it as the Special Forces and the Commandos, who fell back immediately after achieving their first objective, engage in phase-2 of their operations.

/if you read the Sri Lanka Foreign Ministry homepage the SL FM says that it wish to see Kouchner s and Miliband s visits as two separate bilateral visits from the FM of France and UK respectively. What I can read into such an approach is a skillful and tactically handled possible threat of heavy pressure on the SL government from the gigant EU - its not Sweden or Carl Bildt it is about - although Carl Bildt is known as a strong and knowledgable international actor which itself is a challenge for any country to handle . However so is Kouchner who I personally worked under in the same HQ in Kosovo. As Sweden is the incoming President of the EU and part of its so-called trojka it is only natural that the Sri Lankan government by splitting the group of FM a) snub the EU b) divide and rule by receiving the two remaining FM separately and as individual countries and not as the EU. It takes the heat of the SL government and the weight off the EU delegation which cannto speak for the EU in the same way anymore. The fact is also that both France and the UK are two important actors for SL - much more so than Sweden. If the said plans of closing the Swedish representation in SL - which I think would be a mistake of Sweden anyhow - are true then of course it may or may not have had any influence over the SL gov decision - but I doubt it. Instead the SL gov get around it by inviting Carl in May instead - bilaterally as with Kouchner and Miliband. The SL gov do not wish to be put under more pressure by the IC than absolutely necessary - this is its way of handling such pressure and the three FM as well as the whole of the EU should not have fallen for it and accepted it./

This may counter some of these unnecessary pressures that we are experiencing today. End of the day all these politicos have to run for elections. I totally disagree with you two regarding GoSL's position rejecting visa to Swedish FM.
That is the correct step.
1. There is nothing to suggest Swedish FM joining Miliband and Kouchner is a friendly advance towards GoSL. Especially, Miliband and Kouchner already aggressive towards SL and Swedish FM is a hard nut to crack. Combination could be lethal.
2. This argument of loosing investment is bull dust. Cost of extending the war for one month can out weigh the return of tax to GoSL from such investments over many years. Must remember EU did everything in their power in ousting Sri Lanka from the UN Human Rights council and the first to impose an mini economic sanction in the way of not extending our garment quota. These three MF – FMs were behind those two moves in big time.
3. Diplomacy does not mean opening our back side to be screwed.
4. Sweden is blood related to Norway and their last minute inclusion is not in good intensions. Also do not foget we have rubbed the EU when door was shut on Gordon Browns special envoy to Sri Lanka. This is another manifestation of the same move.
If GoSL does not indicate to these scum bags where and what not to cross in our relations they would run the proxy war for a separate state after the demise of the LTTE. I will bet my last buck on that. We must be brave enough to shut the door on their face and show that we mean business – neat.

Unfortunately I have to agree with Being Nobody. I've listened to these government officials and they haven't a clue how to adress some of the questions posed. Either they appear to be arrogant or obviously contradictory to previous statements. Credibility therefore goes down the drain. Sri Lanka NEEDs to invest in a good PR firm. The government can better utilise its time on matters that need urgent attention (resettling IDPs for an example) and the PR firm can be the mouth piece for GOSL. Why don't they realise this? Is this an issue regarding funds available?

Yes, very good point. I think we have done it partly. You may remember we had a visit from a conservative party member from UK (can’t remember his name). He was very vocal about their support to GoSL stand against terror. There is nothing stopping doing this with other countries.

In Colombo, a Sri Lankan foreign ministry spokesman said on Tuesday that Bildt had never been refused a visa and that Sri Lankan Foreign Minister Rohitha Bogollagama had spoken with Bildt on Monday and "extended an invitation to visit Sri Lanka (at) anytime convenient to him", but in May.
A foreign ministry statement late on Monday had said Bogollagama had invited Bildt to come at "a mutually convenient time" in May, although Sri Lanka would confine this week's visit to French and British ministers.

On Monday, EU foreign ministers welcomed the Sri Lankan government's announcement of an end to heavy military operations against rebels, but urged an immediate ceasefire to allow evacuation of endangered civilians.
The ministers reaffirmed concern about mass civilian casualties and worsening humanitarian conditions in northern Sri Lanka, saying civilians there remained in "extreme peril".

When you carpet bomb the innocent Wanni Tamils who hardly have one single meal a day and water, i think there is no GOD. - If they have such a secret plan, why publish in Puligal
- Obviously WMD is a miracle for them. But a good idea. If you give some try for WMD soon you can enjoy international reaction of it.

PUDUCHERRY: The conditions in the temporary camps set up for Tamils in war-ravaged Sri Lanka were worse than those in Hitler’s concentration camps, said D Raja, CPI national secretary.
He told reporters here on Sunday that the CPI and Left parties would fight for the rights of the Lankan Tamils, even after the elections.
The DPA would get a befitting answer in the elections as they were only concerned about retaining power and were least bothered about the poeple’s living conditions, the CPI leader said. “What is the Indian Government doing to stop the war in Sri Lanka? The United Progressive Alliance should reply to this,” Raja said. “When Sri Lankan Defence Secretary Gotabhaya Rajapaksa has come out openly stating that India was providing financial assistance and arms to them, what does the UPA have to say? In Tamil Nadu, the National Security Act was misused politically, Raja alleged.
A change in government was the need of the hour, he said, while elaborating on poverty and unemployment in the country due to economic recession. Around 10 lakh people are on the verge of losing their jobs, he said, and added that both the Congress and the BJP were not bothered about this.
