Karadiyanaru Police Station Blasted by Accident

14 police officer were killed and another 16 injured in a massive accidental explosion at the Karadiyanaru Police Station around 11.30am today. The blast claimed the lives of 6 civilians while 52 others were injured. The details of this explosion are revealing themselves only now.

Investigation units confirmed a short while ago that 700kg of Gelignite stored at the police station by the Chinese construction company CONVAC had detonated during loading killing the two Chinese workers first and then the others.

The majority of the other civilians killed and injured in the incident were visiting the police station and the adjacent Govijanaseva Depot. The blast left a hole in the ground measuring roughly fifteen feet by nine feet.

The police station is situated 500 meters from Karadiyanaru town on the Chenkaladi-Maha Oya road.

Mahinda is not content!

by Helasingha Bandara

The BBC announced that Mahinda’s visit to the UK was unofficial and has been organised by the Sri Lanka High Commission in London. The UK government has finally been drawn into providing unwilling security to him in the face of ferocious objections to his visit by London’s Sri Lanka community. Little did he know that he would face mass protests and draw negative publicity to his visit to London which appears to have no purpose other than image building and setting records? One news item quoted that he is the first to address the union twice. Lalith and Kadir had been Oxford products and had been the Presidents of the Union. By merely reading a speech written by someone else Mahinda Rajapaksha cannot equate the two intellectuals. However this move of Rajapaksha to visit the UK to address the Oxford union is a clear symptom that he is not content with the glory that he and his family have been made to bask in by the local opportunists. Within the shores of almost an unknown tiny island he is the sun, the moon, the earth, the stars and the rivers. He knows that he is no sun, no moon, no starts, no earth, no rivers and nobody beyond the four walls of this little castle.

Why

To the disbelief and disappointment of many people, local and international, he has embarked upon a journey of self aggrandizement. State media and local opportunists help him to deceive the gullible local masses by whitewashing black issues and creating a crystal image. The picture beneath however, is corroding and blackening by the day. The masses do not understand the accountancy and economic jargon of wealth and prosperity. Said in the language they understand is that in today’s Sri Lanka if someone can eat bread with pol sambol he is considered well-to-do. We did not eat bread in our houses because eating bread was considered a sign of poverty in the well-to-do rural houses. Instead we were forces to eat rice and curry for all three meals. As a child I craved for a panroti.

Elephant or the man

Recent statistics show that the human deaths have been far greater than the number of elephant deaths in the elephant-man confrontation. Elephants have started invading many villages which have not been their traditional territories. For example elephants have been sighted in Matale and Anuradhapura towns. Two weeks ago an elephant killed a woman from Thimbiriyawa in the Nikaweratiya region. The government has no strategy to stop the deaths on both sides. People have no option other than to kill elephants. Imagine a three year old coconut plant of a poor villager is eaten by an elephant! The farmer has to wait for another three years to get a plant to grow to that size. These are minute examples of the damage the elephants do to the poor people of Sri Lanka who are being crushed from all sides. The government has no shame in telling lies about the prosperity it is allegedly achieving for people. The magnificent tusker caught by Galgamuwa people died when the local lorry that was used to transport it crashed under its weight. Those lorries have not been made for such purposes. Besides they are so old and rusty and in relative terms unsuitable to be used on public roads. The wild life conservation department did not have a suitable vehicle to transport the trapped elephants . If the state coffers have been emptied by the politician thieves, why not go at least with a begging bowl to South Africa and beg for support to control man-elephant confrontation of which the South Africans have best know-how and the resources. Concerning the gravity of Ali Karadara, It is imminent that a campaign to unite to kill elephants “Pela gasemu, ali maramu”, will emerge from the masses.

The wonder of Asia

Mahinda does not need to make Sri Lanka the wonder of Asia because it is already the wonder of Asia. While 300 chefs cooking kiribath to celebrate King Mahinda’s second coronation women throw their children to Kalu Ganga for being unable to feed them. While the President is paraded in a horse cart, Sri Lanka women are being tortured, raped and killed while slaving for the Arabs. While per capita income is rising to thousands of Dollars the rural Sri Lanka remains dark and not easily accessible (no electricity, no water, no roads, no sanitation and so on). While the country is just closing on the ideal of the wonder of Asia people at Pettah still urinate at the corner of the Fort railway station for being unable to find a public toilet in the vicinity. Not only the Pettah area but the whole of Colombo stinks despite the big talks of the so called Colombians. The journey toward the ‘ideal’ is very near indeed!

The right path.

Forget the ‘distance’, observe the fore-ground! There are millions of small things that can be done to improve the country, its environs and the people. Agree with all politicians and party supporters to stop stealing public money! My neighbour’s house was on sale for 36 M Rupees. The politician who came to buy it felt that it was a little too small a cost for his capacity and later bought a property worth 80M. Investigate how a parliamentarian whose salary is presumably about 40,000 Rupees per month can accumulate such wealth! He needs to be an MP for 160 years to save 80M even if he is able to save his entire salary. Stop wasting money on image building and empty extravaganzas! Develop the country and improve the quality of life of its people! You then do not need to force yourself to address the Oxford Union .All Unions would follow you instead. Mahathir Mohamad of Malaysia is a glowing testimonial

Chaos In London Marks P.R. Disaster

The week that has just ended will undoubtedly go down in history as the singular most disastrous one for Sri Lanka internationally.

President Mahinda Rajapaksa took on the challenge and accepted the invitation to address the Oxford Union in a show of faith that the Sri Lanka’s government has nothing to hide and fears absolutely no one in terms of threats of prosecution for crimes against humanity or war crimes – and flew into the bastion of democracy and parliamentary politics to a storm of gigantic proportions. Not only was he met with hundreds of LTTE-supporting Diaspora but faced a cancellation from the prestigious Oxford Union Society to boot and of course there was the small matter of the so-called latest “revelations” from Britain’s Channel 4 Television network.

Mahinda Rajapaksa, Placard carrying Tamil demonstrators waiting for President Mahinda Rajapaksa to arrive at Heathrow and Chaotic scenes at London’s Heathrow airport As always, Channel 4 released its “new evidence” at a crucial moment for Sri Lanka.
Clearly the revelations from Channel 4 News was – to the average viewer at least – perceived as being another feather in the cap of what has now proven to be the colossus that is the media department of the LTTE. And it is not stronger anywhere in the world than in Great Britain. Over 300,000 Tamil Diaspora have made Britain their home whether through purely legitimate means or illegitimate means but the fact is they are in Britain and they count when it comes to marginal constituencies for all three major political parties in Queen Elizabeth’s Britain – with or without the Great.
Channel 4’s latest pronouncements were brushed aside by the Sri Lankan High Commission in London as being pure and simply an “elongated version of what was previously broadcast” – but that was not enough for the professionals at Channel 4 News. They were adamant that the video was genuine, it had not been dubbed and they promptly sent it to the United Nations panel investigating whether or not Sri Lanka has a case to answer in terms of crimes against humanity. The President ordered his Foreign Minister to deal with it which he duly did in the form of a well attended press conference.

The President’s departure itself did not augur well. Forty five passports were submitted to the British High Commission but due to the exceedingly short time period 18 of the passports including that of the Chairman of SriLankan Airlines did not come back with the necessary visa. The President ordered that they resubmit the passports and catch the flight to London the next day. Eventually Mrs. Rajapaksa did not actually arrive having been alerted that the visit was breaking apart at the seams with the Oxford Union cancelling.
The President arrived in London and checked in to the ultra plush Dorchester Hotel in Park Lane; the High Commission had booked rooms in many of the British capital’s leading hotels: the Hilton on Park Lane, on Edgware Road and the Lancaster Hotel which was ever so convenient being within spitting distance of the High Commission in Hyde Park Garden. Indeed it is within a snowball’s throw of the High Commission as S.B. Dissanayaka was to find out later in the week. Occupying the suite that the legendary pop star Michael Jackson also once occupied, the President was well shielded from the unusually cold weather — indeed the snow too, and of course from the hundreds of Tamil Diaspora who decided to protest by camping in front of the hotel and the High Commission offices.
These did not worry the President in the least, having had protests of the same type in Colombo too in a career spanning some 40 years. They were chanting “Rajapaksa murderer,” “Rajapaksa be damned” and “Rajapaksa the perpetrator of war crimes” but this had little effect on the President who was insulated from the din the protesters created. At Heathrow airport around 200 valiant supporters of the LTTE were present, complete with LTTE flags and created a huge din – only to find out that the Presidential entourage had exited via the VIP exit away from the chaos enacted inside the public arrivals area.
The accompanying ministers and MPs, especially Sajin Vaas Gunawardena and G.L. Peiris, were busy meeting with various British officials in an attempt to secure for the President high profile meetings which alas came to nought, apart from the arrival of Dr. Liam Fox who has an abiding interest in Sri Lankan affairs going back many years. Dr. Fox’s office however was quick to announce that Dr. Fox’s attendance was in his private capacity.
Contrary to numerous claims, the relationship with the Government of Sri Lanka and the public relations firm Bell Pottinger has been described as “never… better”. The interview with the Times of London newspaper was however contentious with plenty of complaints that the President’s answers were taken out of context. Tim Ryan, the Bell Pottinger chief, had given the President a candid take on Sri Lanka’s reputation describing that their job was to fight through the 30% adverse impact Sri Lanka currently has and had forewarned the President not to expect too much from the one interview to a national British newspaper. There were others however, who had a different take: that the President would make a better impact with a television interview, where the combination of TV and the internet would make a far bigger impact.

On Thursday, December 2 evening, the President attended a function at the Sri Lanka High Commission. A large crowd of protesters outside, were chanting and generally causing great inconvenience to the residents and traffic around the area. However when they saw a plush limousine leaving, the crowd surged towards it. S.B. Dissanayaka later described that the vehicle he was travelling in was hit by “stones” – until it was pointed out that there are no stones and pebbles just lying around the well-paved streets of London! It was then accepted that the vehicles were attacked by snowballs thrown by the protesters. SB maintained he was hit by ‘a large stone.’
The President however made his exit from the High Commission with little fuss and returned to the Dorchester. He had just been made aware that the LTTE-leaning Diaspora had obtained a warrant against all the military security personnel in his entourage and that the suggestion was that the Diaspora were attempting a “mass arrest.”
The President ordered that the military personnel be returned to Colombo but was immediately struck down by those very men who made it clear that they were most definitely not leaving “Sir” and going back. Confronted with this brand of loyalty the President decided to immediately return to Sri Lanka – and a hurried check-out was made. The President’s security personnel – police and army – were so rushed that transport was not immediately available. Therefore, a luggage room, No. 740 at the Dorchester was used to store all the bags.
The President was adamant about staying the length of his planned visit and return on Friday. He said that he was not scared, he had no need to be afraid and he would never be afraid. It was to his great consternation that he found himself being dictated to by his security personnel who refused to leave him with the police personnel in the entourage.
The aircraft that had brought Lalith Weeratunga to London had been kept back in London – to be on stand-by after the Oxford Union cancelled their invitation. It was this aircraft that was utilized by the Presidential entourage as well as regular passengers flying SriLankan from London. However there was a slight change as ordered by Sajin Vaas Gunawardena: the stop en-route in Male was removed and Colombo made the first stop.
The Diaspora rumour machinery was hard at work claiming that the President had actually not left London but instead was holed up in the VIP area of Heathrow. These claims had no basis whatsoever as established independently by The Sunday Leader. The President arrived back in Colombo at approximately 3 pm Friday afternoon.

Prior to his hurried departure, on Wednesday evening the President was quite calm and relaxed and spent time meeting members of the Sri Lankan community who had called on him at the Dorchester. A steady and almost never ending stream of visitors were all personally greeted by the President. During this session, a man who told the President that he was a Tamil and that he had connections to the website TamilNet and to Oxford and Cambridge to boot, also did the rounds even going so far as to enter the bedrooms in the Presidential Suite; the President smelling a rat propelled the man away and immediately raised the alarm himself in choice language which would have put Dutugemunu to shame.
He demanded to know what was happening from his security people, saying all they did was to strut up and down in their ties and suits but they were not even aware of who was coming into contact with the President. “I may well have been killed,” he thundered only to be told that the man had entered with High Commission staff. Not true said the High Commission. With G.L. Peiris said another. Not true. Those close to the President moved a discreet distance away whilst the President continued sternly admonishing his security detail. Sajin Vaas being the only one around who didn’t move away, it was left to him to soothe the President. Many in the entourage said that there were many “Mohideens and Babus” around the President in a reference to the assassins of President Premadasa.
However, the Times of London photographer was not allowed to bring his gear in; though security relented at the last minute after a ministerial intervention.
The President ordered G.L. Peiris to check on the videos released by Channel 4 including the short footage on Colonel Ram who the Diaspora claim was killed by the forces whilst in custody. Colonel Ram was a prominent LTTE cadre operating in Batticaloa and the video shows him visibly terrified – the question being asked as to why the recording was made and more pertinently how it ended up in the hands of the Diaspora. Sources knowledgeable on military matters said that it indicated the full impact that Sarath Fonseka’s Military Intelligence Unit had at the time.

Hooligan said...

Of great concern to President Rajapaksa of course was the cancellation of the Oxford Union talk. Not so much because he was not able to deliver that talk but that he was disappointed that aspiring politicians – as indeed the members of the Oxford Union have been for generations – succumbed to the threats of disruption and violence by groups very much aligned to a world-class terror organisation which was roundly defeated by the Sri Lankan military.
The President was of the view that the pro LTTE Diaspora, never really expected that he would take on the invitation to attend Oxford. He was more disappointed that the event did not go ahead as he had made the opportunity of a Question and Answer session – no holds barred as he put it – at a location which he described himself as the cradle of free speech. It proved, the President told members of his inner nexus that Sri Lanka had nothing to hide. In the past there were veiled threats of exercising lax International Jurisdiction laws in Britain against him. He was in Britain for five days and the LTTE-elements had failed in their attempts – instead obtaining a rather “vexatious” warrant against Major General Chagi Gallage.
Nirj Deva Aditya, the MP who has a long history of supporting Sri Lankan issues was scathing in his condemnation of the Oxford Union Society. Describing the cancellation as “outrageous” and clearly “lacking in spine” Nirj Deva posed the contentious question as to whether these students had the necessary mettle to be politicians of the future if they were in effect giving way to terror threats. In a climate where globally countries are united in their resolve not to negotiate with terrorists – as in the case of Somali pirates for example – Deva appeared to be reflecting popular international sentiment on these issues.
Diplomatic analysts in London pointed out that the claims made by Channel 4 was not referred to by the BBC giving rise to thought that Channel 4 appears to be toeing a very pro-LTTE line. Professor G.L. Peiris noted that each time Channel 4 released “sensational” evidence it almost always coincided with a PR-sensitive time for Sri Lanka. That in itself was simply more than a coincidence, though sources at Channel 4 were quick to deny that – saying that they had very much more evidence some of which was far too gruesome to broadcast.
All in all, President Rajapaksa’s decision to visit Britain and in effect throw the gauntlet at the Diaspora who the Government of Sri Lanka say are hindering the progress that unity would bring turned out to be a PR disaster. That in turn is highly unlikely to go away unless and until the government in Colombo makes full and frank statements on matters that drive the allegations machinery: the thousands of photographs and reports of atrocities. There is no time like the present for the government to do so than now. A clear case of needing to have an ambience of Mutatis Mutandis today rather than tomorrow.

Protests against LTTE proxies in North

The people of Kilinochchi, Mullaitivu and Oddusdan participated in a massive demonstration yesterday against LTTE elements in the UK who orchestrated anti-Sri Lanka protests in London earlier this week. Residents of Vishwamadu and Vallipuram were also among the protestors.

An unprecedented number of people attended the demonstrations, carrying placards against the LTTE. A significant feature was the enthusiastic participation by women and children. The crowd burned effigies of Prabhakaran and Pottu Amman. They had cursed the remaining leaders and members of the LTTE rump living abroad. Traders also joined in the protest, closing their shops and hoisting black flags.

Many placards mentioned that President Rajapaksa brought them peace after wiping out the LTTE, which took their freedoms away and subjected them to untold hardships. “We are living in peace because of the President,” the demonstrators said. “We sleep soundly because of you President Rajapaksa” was another slogan. Resettlement is mostly complete in the North.

Shoot the Messenger - the case of Karu. J

When the news is unpalatable, shoot the messenger! This seems to be the inescapable message.

In flipping through the TV channels, I recently chanced on the now familiar rowdy uprising in Parliament - obviously on a matter of supreme importance. This is an engaging diversion from the stale fare of "uthsawayas’" (ribbon cutting, plaque unveiling and gibberish), "uthgoshanas"(placards, loud hailers and worn out slogans) and "upawasas" (spot the hamburger and coke under the blanket!). It transpired that the highly heated and emotional furore was about the latest recruit to the ranks of the "traitors" and those guilty of treason. None other than that affable, genial and gentle Karu Jayasuriya! The causus belli was a statement in The Sunday Island that one hundred and forty odd adult representatives passionately thought was seditious.

I promptly read the purportedly offensive piece. Disappointed I was, that not a syllable, word or expression could I find that could be faulted on the grounds of treason, accuracy or propriety. Only some home truths and sage advice that should properly not offend anyone. Anyone has the right to disagree of course - in dignified debate or other civil process. Hyena-like howling and crude or filthy yellings were never substitutes for reasoned debate. I can only hope that the rowdy behaviour will cost the offenders 10,000 votes per hoot - since votes and elections are all that seem to matter in Paradise/ Miracle Land!

The behaviour of the habitual delinquent types was nauseatingly disgusting. But worse was the role of those, who we believed, were of better stuff. We have more that a sprinkling of professors, top flight administrators, lawyers, doctors (of both the earned and the erronis causa types) and sundry professionals. Does their silent spectatorship imply approval and concurrence, timidity or disinterest? Shame on all of you! Icons of our trusting dreams are evidently no better than the common riff raff! Or, is it that once your snout is in the trough, eyes had better shut!

It is incredible that a bunch of extravagantly overpaid (by a recent estimate, some 2 million rupees per head per month), grossly pampered, and obscenely rewarded under-performers can enjoy apparent immunity if not actual adulation! I wish more will express their indignation and that tolerance limits are nearly exhausted. Else, we will all sink into a hell hole - the rest of the World being not beguiled by our hubris and distorted vision of greatness.

To the President with love..

You regained the country chasing the Tigers.
Signalled to the world that Sri Lanka is strong and healthy,
Remember the Brits, the Vikings, the Blakes who hissed like vipers,
nurtured terror, provided succour to fronts venomous and wealthy

Lanka’s friends were in the East
In Latin America and the Middle East
They rallied round and sent a message to the World.
That Sri Lanka can march along head high and bold.

But, we were stunned when you chose Oxford
To convey the vision of new Lanka to the world
In little England, plagued by flu of past empty glory
plunderer of Lanka and now an abandoned quarry.

Bejing, Delhi , Moscow,Teheran, Caracas or Islamabad
Where millions live and create a new order of vision bold.
Should have been your choice and not a country feeble and old.
As it can never change like charcoal remaining black washed even with liquid gold.

Identify intelligently the new and bold forces
Shun the wasted green eyed faces
Strengthen the fellow travellers to liberation
Refuse to tread the beaten track for hollow jubilation.

Neither to provoke nor to dread
But to win-win by rejecting dead wood
Is the aim of Mahinda Chintanaya to prove
This is my ode to President with love.

I love you and the land where i was born
even more now me and my family have gone
to Melborne, not your friendly Bejing or Delhi.
Patriotism is less important than money to me.

I’ve heard you say people like me should
return and contribute for the island’s good.
I’s one thing to say I’m patriotic and the West is bad
but to come back and live there?? You think I’m mad???

Liam Fox to get protocol assistance
A series of queries have been posed to the External Affairs Ministry concerning reports that the United Kingdom Secretary of State for Defence Dr Liam Fox will not be travelling to Sri Lanka to deliver the Lakshman Kadirgamar Memorial Oration, said a press release issued by it.

On December 18, the invitation to deliver the Oration was extended by the Lakshman Kadirgamar Foundation, it said.

Despite the private nature of the visit, due to the status of the visitor and the important nature of the Oration, the Ministry in association with the other concerned agencies of Government, has made all arrangements to provide the necessary protocol assistance and facilitation to Dr Fox during his planned stay in Sri Lanka.

These same arrangements will be afforded, in the event of the Foundation rescheduling the Oration by Dr Fox for a future date, the release said.

LOL!

....sigh.....

Alas, an opportunity for the Rajapakse regime to use the visit of Liam Fox to it's advantage appears to have been lost. Wikileaks brings out more and more information daily about the HR abuses, war crimes and the SL government's associations with the tamil paramilitaries and their atrocities against the tamil people. The Fox visit could have given the Rajapakse regime a little bit of moral support when the SL government's usual apologists appear to be slowly shying away from openly defending the Rajapakse clan - Rajiva Wijesingha has taken a vow of silence and Dayan Jayatilleke's pronouncements are increasingly becoming defensive. Prof Pieris has lost all credibility and no one takes him seriously after his laughable "freedom of speech" lecture to the British govt quoting Voltaire completely forgetting that he is representing a country that has trampled freedom of speech like no other in the history of Sri Lanka.

Liam Fox, albeit being the defence secretary is an old timer with outdated views who needs a reality check. His association with an unsavoury regime does not put him in good light.I am sure he is aware that he is being used by the cunning Rajapakse government but possibly feels that he is being trapped in a difficult situation. The good doctor who has been in politics for a long time should have known better than to accept gifts from a regimes that showed a dictatorial tendency from the moment it came to power. Liam Fox must be regretting the day he first had contact with the Rajapakse regime.

US lawmakers urge Sri Lanka rights probe

"We strongly believe that any conclusions reached by the Sri Lankan government's commissions must be verified by a parallel international mechanism" backed by the United Nations, the senators wrote.

"Without a means of verification, any findings will lack credibility and true accountability," said the letter, led by Democratic Senator Sherrod Brown of Ohio and Republican Senator Richard Burr of North Carolina.

The senators said that accountability was essential to ensuring reconciliation and warned that history is "littered with failed attempts to bring peace."

"We do not want Sri Lanka to be another one of those failed steps," they wrote

Sri Lanka allows UN to 'share' war crime evidence

Sri Lanka has backtracked and will now allow a United Nations team to visit the country and share evidence gathered during an investigation into whether war crimes were committed during the final phase of the island's bloody civil war, a Cabinet minister said Saturday.

U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon appointed a three-member panel last June to look into alleged human rights abuses during the decades-long war. The Sri Lankan government resisted the move, calling it an infringement of its sovereignty and vowed not to issue visas for the U.N. team.

Lanka-UK ties plunge to sub-zero level
Govt. refuses to release explosive Cameron letter
By Our Diplomatic Editor
The Government is refusing to release a letter sent by British Prime Minister David Cameron to President Mahinda Rajapaksa following the President’s second-term inauguration a month ago. This comes amidst reports that a private visit by British Defence Secretary Liam Fox this week was shot down at the eleventh hour due to pressure from the Tamil Diaspora in Britain and Dr. Fox’s Cabinet colleagues.

The Presidential Secretariat’s Policy Research and Information Unit which handles such letters said, "our office does not have the message sent by the Prime Minister of UK" and suggested this newspaper try the Ministry of External Affairs. The PRIU did, however, point out that the message from the Queen of England has already been released to the media.

The External Affairs Ministry Public Communication Director Bandula Jayasekera referred us to the Protocol Division of the Ministry. Protocol Chief A. L. Ratnapala then confirmed there was a message sent by the British premier but that he did not have the authority to release it and to check back with Mr. Jayasekera who then said that he had not received the message to be released to the media.
According to diplomatic circles, the Cameron letter was "unprecedented" in that it contained "unsolicited advice on good governance in Sri Lanka" together with felicitations for a second term in office.

The secrecy surrounding the message came in the backdrop of a further dip in Britain-Sri Lanka relations following President Rajapaksa's visit to London earlier this month to address a meeting at the Oxford Union and its sudden cancellation amidst street demonstrations by the Tamil Diaspora. The Sri Lankan Government was to take up with the British Foreign Office the matter of demonstrators waving the flag of a banned organisation (LTTE) during the protests.

The unexpected postponement of British Defence Secretary Fox's scheduled visit to Colombo to deliver the Fifth Lakshman Kadirgamar Memorial lecture yesterday aggravated the fragile relations between the two Commonwealth countries.

Dr. Fox's proposed visit was termed a private one but the Sunday Times learns that he had obtained prior approval from the British Foreign Office for the visit before accepting the invitation from the Lakshman Kadirgamar Foundation. He was to speak on the subject of International Security.

Britain’s Guardian newspaper said that Dr. Fox's visit was put off because of Foreign Office concerns while other British media reported that the concerns stemmed from Britain giving 'mixed signals' to a country Britain had placed on the rack on allegations of human rights abuses.

The British Defence Ministry, however, insisted that Dr. Fox’s visit was postponed and he would deliver the lecture early next year in Sri Lanka. The Ministry added that the visit next year would be upgraded to an official visit.

Analysts here pointed out that the upgrading of the visit to a more high profile one was a move to quell speculation that Dr. Fox succumbed to political pressure at home to put off his visit suddenly.

Hooligan said...

A spokesman for the British Defence Ministry gave the official reason as, "Dr. Fox has postponed his private visit to Sri Lanka due to an extension to his scheduled official visit to the Gulf". He is currently in the United Arab Emirates.

The Lakshman Kadirgamar Foundation was informed of the decision to postpone the visit by the External Affairs Ministry around midnight Thursday. Dr. Fox's office had informed the Sri Lanka High Commission in London of the decision that evening.

Dr. Fox's visit to honour the late Sri Lankan Foreign Minister Lakshman Kadirgamar with whom he had interacted when Dr. Fox was a junior minister in the British Foreign Office came at a time when cracks in the bi-lateral relations between Sri Lanka and Britain widened following the Sri Lankan President's visit to Britain earlier this month. His agreement to visit was however made prior to the Sri Lankan President's visit.

Dr. Fox was the only British political leader who met President Rajapaksa during that visit, but in his private capacity as other members of the British Government refused to grant the visiting Head of State and of Government an appointment. The British Government was at pains to describe the President's visit as a 'private one' and afforded him 'appropriate diplomatic security'.

This week, President Rajapaksa refused to receive a farewell call from the outgoing British High Commissioner Peter Hayes until hours before the diplomat left. He was invited for breakfast on the day he left Sri Lanka.

In diplomatic cirlces the current freeze in relations is seen as the worst since former President Ranasinghe Premadasa declared then British High Commissioner David Gladstone persona-non-grata for intefering in the local electoral process.

The already shaky relations between the two countries stems mainly from then British Foreign Secretary David Miliband's visit to Colombo soon after the crushing of the LTTE in May 2009 and comments made by him on the treatment of civilians during the last stages of the military offensive followed by the denial of GSP Plus duty concessions by the European Union (backed by Britain) and the recent 'cold shoulder' President Rajapaksa received when he visited Britain.

Meanwhile Sri Lankan High Commission officials in London will this week meet with British anti-terrorism officials over the issue of display of LTTE flags in London and the protest during the President’s visit.

They have also sought an appointment with the British Foreign Office over the issue and are awaiting an appointment.

Coconut growers against import of nuts
by Ananda KANNANGARA

The Coconut Growers Association (CGA) yesterday cautioned authorities to be vigilant on coconuts that are to be temporarily imported to ease the Christmas and New Year demand, since worldwide coconut plantations have already been affected by two dangerous diseases, the Weligama Vilt and Asariya Mika.

Speaking to the Sunday Observer CGA, President Anton Fernando expressed his displeasure over the decision taken by the Coconut Development and the Janatha Estate Development Board (CDJEDB) to import coconuts as a temporary measure to ease the current demand.

He said if these imported coconuts are affected by these two most dangerous diseases which have already destroyed millions of coconut plantation worldwide, it will be a massive threat to the local coconut cultivation. He therefore, requested CDJEDB, Minister Jagath Pushpakumara to refrain from importing coconuts and take measures to collect them from countrywide estates in a methodical way.

"There is no shortage of coconuts in the country, if correct measures are adopted to collect and distribute them," he assured

MPs sell vehicle permits, while govt. turns blind eye

In what might be the largest vehicle related scam in the country, MPs have sold their car permits and made mints from the sales. Over 60 vehicle permits given to MPs have been sold for between Rs 13-17 million each, a mere few months after MPs being voted into power by the people, after making lofty promises of serving the citizenry and criticizing those who have made politics a source of income. MPs of almost all political hues, have sold their permits to the highest bidder confirming Voltaire, (everyone’s favourite philosopher these days): ‘when it is a question of money, everybody is of the same religion.’
A businessman known as ‘Parliament Ashoka’ is said to be the biggest player in the market, and the choice of vehicle preferred by many who buy permits is the Sahara (Toyota Land Cruiser 200 series). Several MPs have imported these vehicles for Rs 15 million and have sold in turn for Rs 26 million. “Sahara 200 is the best vehicle they can procure from a permit and the market price of the vehicle exceeds Rs 32 million. At that price only a few people can afford to buy a vehicle; that’s why there is a big demand for these permits. A friend of mine imported 10 such vehicles while another imported four, using MP permits.
“The people who bought the permits off these people said that all of them were quite a handful and some transactions even turned violent. They have become so good at acting, that even seasoned businessmen are put to shame at their sales tactics.”
“Fifty one vehicles have already been bought using sold permits, while 65 permits have been sold overall,” said a dealer who specializes in procuring and selling MPs permits. “A large number of provincial councillors have also sold their car permits. This is one of the ways they recover the money spent on their election campaign.”

Sinhala permits and Tamil permits

If an MP dies within five years of obtaining the permit, ownership of the vehicle is transferred to the wife and if both die, parliament takes over the vehicle. Due to this reason permits belonging to Sinhala MPs, are sold at a much higher price than permits belonging to Tamil MPs.
“Many potential buyers still worry about the safety of Tamil MPs and as to whether they will leave the country. It’s a huge investment and everyone likes to play safe.”

Imported Chicken, Eggs, Coconuts and Onions to save the Rajapakse regime

Rata Nagamu” “Api Wawamu” were strikingly nationalistic promises and catchy phrasesn President Rajapakse spelled out in his Chintanaya when he asked for the people’s votes to give him the reins to lead the country to peace, prosperity, lower unemployment plus various other promises. These two features alone can produce much food for consumption, enable the export of excess material and create hundreds of thousands of jobs to bring relief to the young out of schools and universities. The people trusted him and, quite rightly, expected him to honour that trust. . Farmers, industrialists and indigenous investors looked forward to leadership from him and his future Cabinet to help the country and the investors concerned in the process. As months passed, they were alarmed their hopes and the assurances of the President were not working out. prices of Chicken, Eggs, Coconuts and Onions gathered to rise. They reached heights not seen before resulting in even respectable citizens taking to thievery and armed robbery just to keep their heads above water. Repeated requests from Producer interests and Trade Chambers of the industries concerned to help them remain competitive did not evoke satisfactory responses from the ruling elite.

It is in challenging times such as this the ability and efficiency of Cabinet Ministers are put to the test. I recall immediately after the 7/83 days Lalith Athulathmudali - as Minister of Trade - showed his extraordinary learning and talents. Together with his officials, the CWE and the Food Department – not only ensured the smooth supply of essential foodstuffs did not break down in those exceptionally difficult days but also saw to it that these were made available to the people at the same prices as before the 7/83 events.

But what do we have here today – in a super jumbo Cabinet of utterly inefficient square pegs in round holes. The Minister of Trade, with his entire set of dentures on show, claims he “will not allow the consumer to be taken for a ride by the traders” Consumers, at any rate, have been suffering in silence for many months now is something the rulers may probably not know since they are isolated in a different world of their own..

Hooligan said...

continued

The latest ruse of the government where the President himself offered to chair the Cabinet Cost of Living Committee has not and cannot bring prices down.

Bread, Pol Sambol, Dried Chillies – in addition to those items discussed here – have all virtually vanished from the table of even the poor and the marginalised. And what is the government’s and the new Minister’s solution? Imports from India and Pakistan. We do not need a costly Minister to do this for us. This can be done by a mere Assistant Secretary in the Trade Ministry – entailing no additional cost to the people. What is expected of the Minister is to protect the local farmers, growers and investors while ensuring a smooth flow of supplies at affordable levels. Above all, this should have been done with due regard to the lofty ideals of the Chintanaya’s rata nagamu api wawamu ideal.

The Minister and the Government have failed the country very badly here. Imports can only bring short-term price relief. In the long term we cannot afford the foreign-exchange that is required to feed 20 million people. We have already pleaded with the visiting World Bank President to give us a further US$500 million as oxygen to the economy that is virtually in the ICU. All that caravan of utterly inefficient ministers do is smile sheepishly, visit their electorates by helicopter and otherwise engage in profligacy -protected by an army of “support” vehicles and beefy security men. . Besides, imports of Coconuts and Chicken from India Onions from Pakistan also can bring various forms of diseases that can destroy our own agriculture and poultry. Both countries are disease-ridden is well known and, in addition, both have gone through unprecedented floods in recent times.

It might be a lot better for the President, his brothers Basil and Gothabaya – claimed to be extremely able material – to get rid of these ministers and run the government themselves. Or else, ministers expected to give a boost to increased production of rice, rubber, tea will all rather take it easy and chose the easy way out of imports. That will save the Exchequer a lot of money. That can also rid the regime of a few un-necessary and embarrassing excess baggage. Weerawansa has promised to set himself on fire if BKM’s Panel from the UN arrive. They cannot be stopped despite the Professor’s threat not to issue them Visas. Dr. Marvin – of Dutugemunu ancestry – may can be given some farming land in the Angoda-Mulleriyawa area to grow coconuts, produce eggs and chicken meet. He will ask for a few Samurdi animators to help him. Don’t forget to give him some diracha-lanu – just in case.

When President Mahinda Rajapaksa, following a question and answer session with a group of editors and heads of print and electronic media houses hosted them to breakfast at `Temple Trees’ last week, he was separately served a pol sambol obviously less fiery than what he is used to.

Asked why he was taking a low chillie option, the president said that this was the first day of an experiment he was embarking on for gastric reasons. One of his editor guests then told a story of a foreigner who went to dinner to a Lankan home. Emerging from the toilet next morning, he told his wife: ``I now know why these people use water for their morning ablutions. The (toilet) paper would catch fire!’’
