Karadiyanaru Police Station Blasted by Accident

14 police officer were killed and another 16 injured in a massive accidental explosion at the Karadiyanaru Police Station around 11.30am today. The blast claimed the lives of 6 civilians while 52 others were injured. The details of this explosion are revealing themselves only now.

Investigation units confirmed a short while ago that 700kg of Gelignite stored at the police station by the Chinese construction company CONVAC had detonated during loading killing the two Chinese workers first and then the others.

The majority of the other civilians killed and injured in the incident were visiting the police station and the adjacent Govijanaseva Depot. The blast left a hole in the ground measuring roughly fifteen feet by nine feet.

The police station is situated 500 meters from Karadiyanaru town on the Chenkaladi-Maha Oya road.

From Daily Noose..
Liam Fox to get protocol assistance
A series of queries have been posed to the External Affairs Ministry concerning reports that the United Kingdom Secretary of State for Defence Dr Liam Fox will not be travelling to Sri Lanka to deliver the Lakshman Kadirgamar Memorial Oration, said a press release issued by it.

On December 18, the invitation to deliver the Oration was extended by the Lakshman Kadirgamar Foundation, it said.

Despite the private nature of the visit, due to the status of the visitor and the important nature of the Oration, the Ministry in association with the other concerned agencies of Government, has made all arrangements to provide the necessary protocol assistance and facilitation to Dr Fox during his planned stay in Sri Lanka.

These same arrangements will be afforded, in the event of the Foundation rescheduling the Oration by Dr Fox for a future date, the release said.

LOL!

....sigh.....

Alas, an opportunity for the Rajapakse regime to use the visit of Liam Fox to it's advantage appears to have been lost. Wikileaks brings out more and more information daily about the HR abuses, war crimes and the SL government's associations with the tamil paramilitaries and their atrocities against the tamil people. The Fox visit could have given the Rajapakse regime a little bit of moral support when the SL government's usual apologists appear to be slowly shying away from openly defending the Rajapakse clan - Rajiva Wijesingha has taken a vow of silence and Dayan Jayatilleke's pronouncements are increasingly becoming defensive. Prof Pieris has lost all credibility and no one takes him seriously after his laughable "freedom of speech" lecture to the British govt quoting Voltaire completely forgetting that he is representing a country that has trampled freedom of speech like no other in the history of Sri Lanka.

Liam Fox, albeit being the defence secretary is an old timer with outdated views who needs a reality check. His association with an unsavoury regime does not put him in good light.I am sure he is aware that he is being used by the cunning Rajapakse government but possibly feels that he is being trapped in a difficult situation. The good doctor who has been in politics for a long time should have known better than to accept gifts from a regimes that showed a dictatorial tendency from the moment it came to power. Liam Fox must be regretting the day he first had contact with the Rajapakse regime.

US lawmakers urge Sri Lanka rights probe

"We strongly believe that any conclusions reached by the Sri Lankan government's commissions must be verified by a parallel international mechanism" backed by the United Nations, the senators wrote.

"Without a means of verification, any findings will lack credibility and true accountability," said the letter, led by Democratic Senator Sherrod Brown of Ohio and Republican Senator Richard Burr of North Carolina.

The senators said that accountability was essential to ensuring reconciliation and warned that history is "littered with failed attempts to bring peace."

"We do not want Sri Lanka to be another one of those failed steps," they wrote

Sri Lanka allows UN to 'share' war crime evidence

Sri Lanka has backtracked and will now allow a United Nations team to visit the country and share evidence gathered during an investigation into whether war crimes were committed during the final phase of the island's bloody civil war, a Cabinet minister said Saturday.

U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon appointed a three-member panel last June to look into alleged human rights abuses during the decades-long war. The Sri Lankan government resisted the move, calling it an infringement of its sovereignty and vowed not to issue visas for the U.N. team.

Lanka-UK ties plunge to sub-zero level
Govt. refuses to release explosive Cameron letter
By Our Diplomatic Editor
The Government is refusing to release a letter sent by British Prime Minister David Cameron to President Mahinda Rajapaksa following the President’s second-term inauguration a month ago. This comes amidst reports that a private visit by British Defence Secretary Liam Fox this week was shot down at the eleventh hour due to pressure from the Tamil Diaspora in Britain and Dr. Fox’s Cabinet colleagues.

The Presidential Secretariat’s Policy Research and Information Unit which handles such letters said, "our office does not have the message sent by the Prime Minister of UK" and suggested this newspaper try the Ministry of External Affairs. The PRIU did, however, point out that the message from the Queen of England has already been released to the media.

The External Affairs Ministry Public Communication Director Bandula Jayasekera referred us to the Protocol Division of the Ministry. Protocol Chief A. L. Ratnapala then confirmed there was a message sent by the British premier but that he did not have the authority to release it and to check back with Mr. Jayasekera who then said that he had not received the message to be released to the media.
According to diplomatic circles, the Cameron letter was "unprecedented" in that it contained "unsolicited advice on good governance in Sri Lanka" together with felicitations for a second term in office.

The secrecy surrounding the message came in the backdrop of a further dip in Britain-Sri Lanka relations following President Rajapaksa's visit to London earlier this month to address a meeting at the Oxford Union and its sudden cancellation amidst street demonstrations by the Tamil Diaspora. The Sri Lankan Government was to take up with the British Foreign Office the matter of demonstrators waving the flag of a banned organisation (LTTE) during the protests.

The unexpected postponement of British Defence Secretary Fox's scheduled visit to Colombo to deliver the Fifth Lakshman Kadirgamar Memorial lecture yesterday aggravated the fragile relations between the two Commonwealth countries.

Dr. Fox's proposed visit was termed a private one but the Sunday Times learns that he had obtained prior approval from the British Foreign Office for the visit before accepting the invitation from the Lakshman Kadirgamar Foundation. He was to speak on the subject of International Security.

Britain’s Guardian newspaper said that Dr. Fox's visit was put off because of Foreign Office concerns while other British media reported that the concerns stemmed from Britain giving 'mixed signals' to a country Britain had placed on the rack on allegations of human rights abuses.

The British Defence Ministry, however, insisted that Dr. Fox’s visit was postponed and he would deliver the lecture early next year in Sri Lanka. The Ministry added that the visit next year would be upgraded to an official visit.

Analysts here pointed out that the upgrading of the visit to a more high profile one was a move to quell speculation that Dr. Fox succumbed to political pressure at home to put off his visit suddenly.

Hooligan said...

A spokesman for the British Defence Ministry gave the official reason as, "Dr. Fox has postponed his private visit to Sri Lanka due to an extension to his scheduled official visit to the Gulf". He is currently in the United Arab Emirates.

The Lakshman Kadirgamar Foundation was informed of the decision to postpone the visit by the External Affairs Ministry around midnight Thursday. Dr. Fox's office had informed the Sri Lanka High Commission in London of the decision that evening.

Dr. Fox's visit to honour the late Sri Lankan Foreign Minister Lakshman Kadirgamar with whom he had interacted when Dr. Fox was a junior minister in the British Foreign Office came at a time when cracks in the bi-lateral relations between Sri Lanka and Britain widened following the Sri Lankan President's visit to Britain earlier this month. His agreement to visit was however made prior to the Sri Lankan President's visit.

Dr. Fox was the only British political leader who met President Rajapaksa during that visit, but in his private capacity as other members of the British Government refused to grant the visiting Head of State and of Government an appointment. The British Government was at pains to describe the President's visit as a 'private one' and afforded him 'appropriate diplomatic security'.

This week, President Rajapaksa refused to receive a farewell call from the outgoing British High Commissioner Peter Hayes until hours before the diplomat left. He was invited for breakfast on the day he left Sri Lanka.

In diplomatic cirlces the current freeze in relations is seen as the worst since former President Ranasinghe Premadasa declared then British High Commissioner David Gladstone persona-non-grata for intefering in the local electoral process.

The already shaky relations between the two countries stems mainly from then British Foreign Secretary David Miliband's visit to Colombo soon after the crushing of the LTTE in May 2009 and comments made by him on the treatment of civilians during the last stages of the military offensive followed by the denial of GSP Plus duty concessions by the European Union (backed by Britain) and the recent 'cold shoulder' President Rajapaksa received when he visited Britain.

Meanwhile Sri Lankan High Commission officials in London will this week meet with British anti-terrorism officials over the issue of display of LTTE flags in London and the protest during the President’s visit.

They have also sought an appointment with the British Foreign Office over the issue and are awaiting an appointment.

Coconut growers against import of nuts
by Ananda KANNANGARA

The Coconut Growers Association (CGA) yesterday cautioned authorities to be vigilant on coconuts that are to be temporarily imported to ease the Christmas and New Year demand, since worldwide coconut plantations have already been affected by two dangerous diseases, the Weligama Vilt and Asariya Mika.

Speaking to the Sunday Observer CGA, President Anton Fernando expressed his displeasure over the decision taken by the Coconut Development and the Janatha Estate Development Board (CDJEDB) to import coconuts as a temporary measure to ease the current demand.

He said if these imported coconuts are affected by these two most dangerous diseases which have already destroyed millions of coconut plantation worldwide, it will be a massive threat to the local coconut cultivation. He therefore, requested CDJEDB, Minister Jagath Pushpakumara to refrain from importing coconuts and take measures to collect them from countrywide estates in a methodical way.

"There is no shortage of coconuts in the country, if correct measures are adopted to collect and distribute them," he assured

MPs sell vehicle permits, while govt. turns blind eye

In what might be the largest vehicle related scam in the country, MPs have sold their car permits and made mints from the sales. Over 60 vehicle permits given to MPs have been sold for between Rs 13-17 million each, a mere few months after MPs being voted into power by the people, after making lofty promises of serving the citizenry and criticizing those who have made politics a source of income. MPs of almost all political hues, have sold their permits to the highest bidder confirming Voltaire, (everyone’s favourite philosopher these days): ‘when it is a question of money, everybody is of the same religion.’
A businessman known as ‘Parliament Ashoka’ is said to be the biggest player in the market, and the choice of vehicle preferred by many who buy permits is the Sahara (Toyota Land Cruiser 200 series). Several MPs have imported these vehicles for Rs 15 million and have sold in turn for Rs 26 million. “Sahara 200 is the best vehicle they can procure from a permit and the market price of the vehicle exceeds Rs 32 million. At that price only a few people can afford to buy a vehicle; that’s why there is a big demand for these permits. A friend of mine imported 10 such vehicles while another imported four, using MP permits.
“The people who bought the permits off these people said that all of them were quite a handful and some transactions even turned violent. They have become so good at acting, that even seasoned businessmen are put to shame at their sales tactics.”
“Fifty one vehicles have already been bought using sold permits, while 65 permits have been sold overall,” said a dealer who specializes in procuring and selling MPs permits. “A large number of provincial councillors have also sold their car permits. This is one of the ways they recover the money spent on their election campaign.”

Sinhala permits and Tamil permits

If an MP dies within five years of obtaining the permit, ownership of the vehicle is transferred to the wife and if both die, parliament takes over the vehicle. Due to this reason permits belonging to Sinhala MPs, are sold at a much higher price than permits belonging to Tamil MPs.
“Many potential buyers still worry about the safety of Tamil MPs and as to whether they will leave the country. It’s a huge investment and everyone likes to play safe.”

LOL

Imported Chicken, Eggs, Coconuts and Onions to save the Rajapakse regime

Rata Nagamu” “Api Wawamu” were strikingly nationalistic promises and catchy phrasesn President Rajapakse spelled out in his Chintanaya when he asked for the people’s votes to give him the reins to lead the country to peace, prosperity, lower unemployment plus various other promises. These two features alone can produce much food for consumption, enable the export of excess material and create hundreds of thousands of jobs to bring relief to the young out of schools and universities. The people trusted him and, quite rightly, expected him to honour that trust. . Farmers, industrialists and indigenous investors looked forward to leadership from him and his future Cabinet to help the country and the investors concerned in the process. As months passed, they were alarmed their hopes and the assurances of the President were not working out. prices of Chicken, Eggs, Coconuts and Onions gathered to rise. They reached heights not seen before resulting in even respectable citizens taking to thievery and armed robbery just to keep their heads above water. Repeated requests from Producer interests and Trade Chambers of the industries concerned to help them remain competitive did not evoke satisfactory responses from the ruling elite.

It is in challenging times such as this the ability and efficiency of Cabinet Ministers are put to the test. I recall immediately after the 7/83 days Lalith Athulathmudali - as Minister of Trade - showed his extraordinary learning and talents. Together with his officials, the CWE and the Food Department – not only ensured the smooth supply of essential foodstuffs did not break down in those exceptionally difficult days but also saw to it that these were made available to the people at the same prices as before the 7/83 events.

But what do we have here today – in a super jumbo Cabinet of utterly inefficient square pegs in round holes. The Minister of Trade, with his entire set of dentures on show, claims he “will not allow the consumer to be taken for a ride by the traders” Consumers, at any rate, have been suffering in silence for many months now is something the rulers may probably not know since they are isolated in a different world of their own..

Hooligan said...

continued

The latest ruse of the government where the President himself offered to chair the Cabinet Cost of Living Committee has not and cannot bring prices down.

Bread, Pol Sambol, Dried Chillies – in addition to those items discussed here – have all virtually vanished from the table of even the poor and the marginalised. And what is the government’s and the new Minister’s solution? Imports from India and Pakistan. We do not need a costly Minister to do this for us. This can be done by a mere Assistant Secretary in the Trade Ministry – entailing no additional cost to the people. What is expected of the Minister is to protect the local farmers, growers and investors while ensuring a smooth flow of supplies at affordable levels. Above all, this should have been done with due regard to the lofty ideals of the Chintanaya’s rata nagamu api wawamu ideal.

The Minister and the Government have failed the country very badly here. Imports can only bring short-term price relief. In the long term we cannot afford the foreign-exchange that is required to feed 20 million people. We have already pleaded with the visiting World Bank President to give us a further US$500 million as oxygen to the economy that is virtually in the ICU. All that caravan of utterly inefficient ministers do is smile sheepishly, visit their electorates by helicopter and otherwise engage in profligacy -protected by an army of “support” vehicles and beefy security men. . Besides, imports of Coconuts and Chicken from India Onions from Pakistan also can bring various forms of diseases that can destroy our own agriculture and poultry. Both countries are disease-ridden is well known and, in addition, both have gone through unprecedented floods in recent times.

It might be a lot better for the President, his brothers Basil and Gothabaya – claimed to be extremely able material – to get rid of these ministers and run the government themselves. Or else, ministers expected to give a boost to increased production of rice, rubber, tea will all rather take it easy and chose the easy way out of imports. That will save the Exchequer a lot of money. That can also rid the regime of a few un-necessary and embarrassing excess baggage. Weerawansa has promised to set himself on fire if BKM’s Panel from the UN arrive. They cannot be stopped despite the Professor’s threat not to issue them Visas. Dr. Marvin – of Dutugemunu ancestry – may can be given some farming land in the Angoda-Mulleriyawa area to grow coconuts, produce eggs and chicken meet. He will ask for a few Samurdi animators to help him. Don’t forget to give him some diracha-lanu – just in case.

Asked why he was taking a low chillie option, the president said that this was the first day of an experiment he was embarking on for gastric reasons. One of his editor guests then told a story of a foreigner who went to dinner to a Lankan home.
