58 Division troops are now 2kms south of EPS. Tigers are positioned along the former forward defence line constructed by the EPS' 54 Division. This FDL is where Hasalaka Gamini Kularatne gave his life in heroic fashion.
58 Division troops, somewhat fatigued by recent exploits into Kilinochchi will probably take some time to retake the area. Further north the Mech Infantry, formerly under Ralph Nugera, is awaiting orders to march under Udaya Herath, Nugera's deputy.
Meanwhile sources indicated that the LTTE maybe constructing another bund at Murusamodai, 10km east of Paranthan. Tigers have moved around 1000 cadres from Kilinochchi to Mulaitivu. Air strikes, MBRL and artillery strikes were launched on identified gathering points to eliminate the build up.
Heavy LTTE mortar and artillery strikes are being launched from this area for the last 10 days. An artillery barrage also fell on Kilinochchi town today. Despite these developments no clear strategy has emerged from the LTTE's side.
The SLA also captured the Iranamadu tank bund today. They recovered 8 bodies of soldiers declared missing in recent confrontations in this area. A large number of LTTE bodies recovered from various places in this fashion were all buried.
A contingent of 15 SBS and RABS units were deployed at Nayaru today to help end any sea tiger infiltrations. The contingent will increase to about 25 boats or 75 SBS/RABS men in due course.

Well, being from a middle-class family back home in Jaffna, I never thought about leaving SL in any circumstances, but things happened so fast just like in any other Tamilian’s life from SL. After witnessing my friends/relatives getting killed, and constant threats of mortar shells in 90, I had decided to leave SL for good. My family sent me to Colombo on the process of leaving to some foreign country, mind you, that was the first time I saw Colombo, yes, I was discriminated by my own Colombo Tamils who thought that I was real Jaffna country brute, in fact, I was. Fortunately within next 6 months of my Colombo stay I left the country for good.
For god’s sake, I’m successful as anyone in terms of education and career, walked through the North American cities, big global firms and board meetings etc. For better or worse, VP had opened the door for every Lankan Tamilian. Whether you live in SL or US, you can be happy with your lives if you are into spirituality. I still love back home, and my people. Some day I believe that I will give back to our community what I gained from it.

without good road access; it is roughly in the shape of a tilted rectangle with its corners located at Kokkavil in the West, Vellikandal in the North, Puthukkudyiruppu in the East, and Oddusuddan in the South.
I want to make some suggestions that would help clearing this area Mullaitivu-District-Jungle, not only to help sweep the LTTE forces from the Ampakamam area towards A35 through this region, but also to help in maintaining this region free of terrorists, and hidden arms and explosives, in the future if the LTTE reverts to a guerilla type conflict. The biggest problem I see is that this region has no roads to support quick resupply and reinforcement of the SLA troops operating in this area.
Therefore, I suggest that the SLA create two good quality roads that extend across the region: the first one would extend from Iranamadu (i.e., Iranamadu Airstrip area) in the West to Mulliyawalai in the East, and the second from Ampakamam in the Southwest to Theravilkulam in the Northeast. These two roads would intersect at a 4-way road junction in the middle of this region.
If, as I understand, there is a long earthbund-trench fortification erected by the LTTE extending between Iranamadu and
Mulliyawalai, this can form the basis of one road. Two army units can head towards each other from Iranamadu and Mulliyawalai, respectively, capturing the earthbund fortification, followed by army engineers with earth moving equipment filling the trench with earth from the bund, compacting the surface, installing culverts and small bridges as needed, and creating a road that can be paved
later. In this way, the burden of cutting down trees to create a clear path, and leveling the road would be minimized. Since both ends of this road are in SLA's hands, this can be done from both ends.
While the Ampakamam end of the second road is in SLA's possession, the Theravilkulam end is not. Therefore, this road would have to be contructed only from the Ampakamam end. A third unit of the SLA would launch itself in the Northeast direction towards
Vellikandal capturing territory and advancing the front, while an army engineers unit would follow with roadbuilding equipment cutting down trees, leveling and creating a road which will ultimately terminate in front of the projected final LTTE fortfications defending route A35. Upon final defeat of the LTTE along A35, this road would be joined to A35 at Theravilkulam.
Such a strategy would have three benefits:
1. It would yield the necessary roads to rollup and clear LTTE elements through the Mullaitivu District Jungle,
2. It would open another easily supplied front located in the middle of A35,
3. It would permit rapid motorable access to this densely forested area to combat terrorists in the future.
I consider these roads to be a necessary military asset for in permanently securing this region in the future, and an economic asset for developing it with due regard to environmental impacts.

Army deserters trained by LTTE infiltrate army

A group of Sinhala youth who had been receiving training from the LTTE’s armed intelligence wing has infiltrated the army, our sources say.
Keselwatta police with the assistance of the military police were able to arrest one soldier who had been trained by Tiger armed intelligence operatives recently. This soldier was arrested while serving with the army at the security forces forward defence line at Kilali.
Sources reveal that he is now being kept at an undisclosed location and is under intense interrogation by both the police and the army. The soldier is said to be a resident of Moratumulla area in Moratuwa.
Meanwhile, Keselwatta police are conducting investigations in order to arrest another soldier after receiving a tip off. A senior police officer said that they have not been able to locate the area where the soldier by the name of Anil was serving.
Police have uncovered a plot hatched by him on the instructions of the LTTE, to assassinate a senior officer of the navy engineers. The assassination was due to be carried out at a location in Athurugiriya.
Details of these Sinhalese terrorists trained by the LTTE’s armed wing were revealed upon interrogation of a Sinhalese underworld gang. They were arrested while preparing to assassinate senior security forces personnel. This gang had been given weapons training in the Wanni by the Tigers.
During interrogation, police have discovered that the suspect soldier arrested in Kilali had sold the firearm given to him by the LTTE, to a politician for Rs. 75,000. Sources reveal that police have commenced investigations to arrest this politician, identified as a councillor of the Moratuwa urban council.
The arrested soldier had served in the army for many years, and had been registered as a deserter during the period of the ceasefire. This was after he failed to report back to duty having left on duty leave. Instead of returning to the army after the completion of his leave period, he had travelled to Kilinochchi with a trader selling furniture.
This was where he had first come into contact with the LTTE and become a member of its armed intelligence wing, investigators have found. Sources also reveal that the suspect had been planning to kill a number of Tamil businessmen in Colombo on the instructions of the LTTE.
Meanwhile, a senior security forces officer told Lakbimanews that this was the first instance where they have found Sinhalese LTTE intelligence wing members infiltrating the army. However, the officer said that a significant number of army personnel and deserters have been arrested within the last five years for their suspected links with the LTTE. Among them was an army major.
The security forces officer said that this major was arrested in connection with his suspected involvement in the suicide bomb attack on the army’s deputy chief of staff, Major General Parami Kulatunga.
However, he added that during interrogation, it was revealed that the major was also involved in the attempted assassination of the Army Commander.

Consequently, although slow, they can defend themselves, using guns, RABS and the helicopter gunships. Because they are relatively large freighters (e.g., 10,000 - 30,000 tons displacement), they can weather storms, can carry lots of supplies such as food, fuel, and ammunition, and have on-board workshops for repairs. In stormy weather, the RABS can be hoisted on board for safety.
These ships can also carry a couple of smaller supply/rescue helicopters with folding rotors, and buoyant floats for landing on bodies of water.

Ananda-Usa..that new idea about the war ships sound interesting...., but I think the way forward for us wud be to try and build it our selves, maybe for a start we can follow ur approach of using a WWII freighter, but the key wud be to make it a homegrown industry, so all the knowledge we have gained in facing the SeaTigers for all these years can be made in to a commercial product that wi can market.
This new breed of was ship will be not made to go head to head with another fully fledged war ship belonging to another countries Blue water navy, but to counter the new category of threat posed to countries by non-country players (eg- seperatists, drug runners, gun runners, pirates etc etc)...

Kurinchattiv with its unique high ground area, a vital topographical feature adds more advantage for the recent military manoeuvres of the SL Army where troops will be able to concentrate heavy gun attacks at all directions, the sources further said. According to latest reports received from the battlefront, TF-1 troops are further pushing into the EPS while separate military fighting formations are marching eastwards at LTTE last bastion in Mullaittivu, security sources said.
Elephant Pass is the main entrance to the Jaffna Peninsula which can be used in all weather conditions. In 1991, Army Corporal Gamini Kularathne of Sri Lanka Army Sinha Regiment made his supreme sacrifice to save his comrades by attacking an explosive laden bulldozer driven by an LTTE suicide bomber. Corporal Gamini prevented the LTTE bulldozer entering the Army camp by getting on to the vehicle and destroying it with a hand grenade attack. He was posthumously conferred with Parama Weera Vibhushanya (PWV), the award for the bravery of highest order.

i agree with ananda on the cost factor. however, i have doubts about the feasibility of converting or upgrading WWII craft.
while we most definitely have enough people with expertise and skills for the job, we would also need some outside help and resources to realise this goal.
i say this because it would be smarter to produce existing models under licence from other countries such as china or one of the eastern bloc states like we did with the israeli dvoras than to start from scratch and go through the research and development process to develop an indigenous vessel. if we were going to do this, then the process should have started years ago.
perhaps, it's much easier to lease/ buy 2nd hand like we have done in the past? or is it once again a case of budgetary constraints where funds need to be diverted to more pressing needs?
i am all for sri lanka developing its own military industry by itself if not with the help of friends but perhaps we should start with the smaller, more manageable aspects.

The idea is exactly what you said: develop our own R&D and technology skills, meet our own defense needs while building products that GOSL, or Sri Lankan defense industry companies can sell to the world with GOSL permission. I go away for a day or so, and find the blog infested with a new virus- the school rivalry type. I am not going to waste my time working out who has started and who has fed the fire. But I notice that the usual suspect has had a lot to say.
I would remind bloggers about few of the tactics adopted by anti-SL forces in the blog:
The LTTE coolies are easy to spot with their Buruwa language and handles.
The more subtle ones are as follows:
1)Conversations about political parties usually feigning a fight (intention- to drag fellow bloggers in and create dissent)
2)Making conceited and 'superior' statements but having no real substance. When challenged they make circular arguments.
3)Isolating individual bloggers and attacking the individual in a concerted fashion hoping to drag other bloggers into it.
4)Seducing isolated individuals hoping to convert these patriotic bloggers or that others would attack the blogger.
5) Making statements about the integrity of Sri Lankan society in a non-constructive manner by directly attacking either culture, history, Government, Civil Service etc etc. Individual examples are given after making vast generalisations.
6) Now we have a variant of the number one method; that of bringing up school rivalry.
I would suggest that individual bloggers should be careful of anyone who has contacted them outside the blog who may use 'seduction' to prompt them to make certain statements as proxies (for the above methods). I have myself contacted some bloggers but do not consider these interactions to be in that category.
One has to consider what would be the utility of such disruption of a blog full of Keyboard Warriors?
I would suggest to you that the principal reason is to prevent the bloggers from forming a real network of patriots who would be of great assistance to Sri Lanka in the forthcoming Propaganda War.
I want the bloggers to know that in the nearly 4 decades I have spent ouside of SL I have seen examples of the very clever and subtle network that the LTTE/Tamil-Dravidianist/Compradors have developed. They are not to be under-estimated.
No doubt they have predicted the formation of a similar International Comradeship being developed by Patriots of Lanka. They would see this as a clear and present threat. Do not forget that they are part of a ruthless criminal network. Do not ever, reveal the identity of a comrade to any other contact unless you are entirely sure of the identity and intentions of each and never without the knowledge of each. Cultivate any contact very carefully before you can trust. First develop a network of people you have known for years and have a degree of trust in.
Remember, there are only degrees of trust.
What can we achieve?
We can develop an International network of Professionals who can be helpful to mother Lanka in her hour of need. We would help by establishing achievable goals such as providing professional services, goods, investments to bolster the growing economy of Sri Lanka. This is very crucial because, for the first time in 7-800 years, Sri Lanka has an economy which has risen from the ground to at least it's knees. We need to help it stand upright again. This alone will permit the defenders of Sri Lanka do their job undistracted.
The criminal network may go to any length to disrupt the good we can do.
Every contact you may make within the blog (for example) will expand the networks you already have several fold. However, in Google Maps the "bridge" does not look particularly fragile since the A9 seems to be located an land strip. It seems to not be a true bridge.
