The Army launched a limited-scale offensive utilizing the 58th Division on Monday. Small teams of infantry, also comprising Commandos, have advanced between 800 meters to one kilometer into enemy areas and have captured an LTTE bunker-line. The Army has so far recovered 13 bodies of LTTE cadres. Casualty figures of the troops stood at 20 wounded and 2 killed as of today. The operation is still continuing left of the Yoda Wewa in the area between Uylankulam and Vankalai. LTTE has deployed an assortment of troops to counter the offensive including the 'Soothiya Regiment' comprising around 150 female cadres.

Defencewire,
How could a operation is defined as limited or otherwise?
What would be the main focus of this limited operation in Mannar? Killing more LTTE terrorits ? Destroying LTTE gunpoints?
Or capturing some stratergical locations.?

I don't know to whom I'm answering here but here goes,
A limited offensive is as opposed to an all-out offensive where an entire division or several divisions of the army will be deployed on an offensive at a given time. In a limited offensive, several units or at the most, a regiment will be deployed.

The objective of this offensive seems short-term, to destroy LTTE assets (including heavy guns), fortifications and fighting formations ahead of a major offensive.

We cannot comment on the overall strategy yet.

We havn't created an FDL in Mannar yet. The 4,6 and 8 man teams involved in the operation are likely to set the stage for further advancements. This is an offensive posture, not defensive. Therefore in the limited term, no FDLs have been built. Since the location of these units is clandestine to avoid artillery strikes, their positions aren't given away.

I can understand that. Hopefully we can penetrate deep into their territory before going defensive.

I WISH OUR BOYS THE BEST OF LUCK.

GO ON LIONS. KILL THOSE TIGERS.
