Akashi off to seek peace in Sri Lanka

Kyodo News

Japan expressed concern Friday that the Sri Lankan conflict will escalate and said it will send special peace envoy Yasushi Akashi to the country Sunday to call for continuing dialogue.

"We are very worried that Sri Lanka's decision (to withdraw from a ceasefire agreement with rebels there) will lead to further conflict," Foreign Minister Masahiko Komura told reporters in announcing Akashi's three-day trip.

"Japan would like to call on the Sri Lankan government to continue efforts toward a political resolution through dialogue," Komura said.

Akashi is scheduled to meet Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapakse and other senior officials during his visit, the Foreign Ministry said.

Pan Hinda,

""Yes why not wait and see?""

Exactly thats what I have been suggesting too:) .I am not saying the Govt cannot win, but if the bombastic predictions turns out like past ones, then?

""Assuming a victory for LTTE, a small window will emerge for some R&R until the military takes a break and does it again in a few more years time. This pattern will go on until LTTE is beaten""

You don't sound so sure anymore, do you :)? Anyway, the military does it again, and the LTTE does it again, and your country goes to the drain again? If your country had solved this issue with wisdom @independence, workers from surrounding countries would have been flocking to your country for jobs by now ,you know.

""Does the words 'hollow victory' ring a bell with you?""

It does, loud and clear. And again and again--for a country who needs to 'defeat'its own people, practice 'scorched earth policy'on its own, bomb and shell its own people and then exults in anticipation of such a ''victory''.
Hollow indeed.

Sam,
Thank you. We agree to disagree then

how about those peace loving northern tamil people who have no choice but to follow the LTTE just because they live in the north?.How about those peace loving peoples kids and grand kids made to serve a brand of luntics while their kids enjoy all the luxuries overseas?..will these bring jobs to SLanka as well?.So what do we do now ..invent a time machine and try to rectify history or try our best to do the right thing now.?.the time machine idea is th easiest..well start with 1948 and ensure a lot of sinhalese/muslim/people of other minorities immigate overseas so that they give the world a more balanced opinion without waiting for 9/11 to happen(a blessing in disguise for us)

Defencewire,

Can you explain when you have time how come even after abandon of CFA so called "co-chairs" can exist? (I thought co-chairs were part of CFA) What about removal of Japan and including Canada and Australia? (This relates to the political column of the island.)
