Determined, Dared and Done Again!

SF unit day. Source: army.lk
A Team of Special Forces that crept through a gap in the LTTE defenceline east of Akkarayankulam engaged in a fierce fight with 5 LTTE teams from Charles Anthony and Imran Pandian units this morning killing 60 Tigers. 8 Special Forces died in the fight and 20 others received injuries.

4 Battalions of regular infantry were dispatched to guard the periphery of the area as the Special Forces took on the Tigers. Heavy artillery and MBRL fire was directed at the enemy for almost five hours.

The SF team engaged in today's battle was from 1 Special Forces. Special Forces deployment was increased in the area following the deployment of LTTE 'elite units' in Akkarayan. The decision was made at a meeting between Commander Lt. Gen. Sarath Fonseka, Maj. Gen. Jagath "Choola" Dias (GoC 57), SF CO Brigadier Nirmal Dharmaratne and Brigadier Shavendra Silva (GoC TF-1).

Meanwhile Tigers have started digging another trench parallel to the A-9 from Kilinochchi to Iranamadu via Kokavil using forced civilian labour and heavy equipment captured/surrendered from NGOs. Some of this equipment was destroyed in an air strike yesterday.

The 59 Division operating in the general area Nayaru are set to capture the Nayaru Bridge within the next few hours. The pace of the operations have increased following intelligence reports of a possible LTTE attempt to blast the bridge.

If the bridge is captured, the next towns to fall would be Chemmalai, Alampil and Mulaitivu, in that order.

well done, BUT...basicaly this means that 8 died, and 20 are injured..and considering the fact that there are only a small amount of Special Forces, constantly exposing them the do-or-die battle situs. in deep battle space, wouldn't this create immense battle fatigue to these guys?

I find this funny if tragic. Special Forces should be just for the opening shock, and not to engage in slugfests while regulars stand ' guard' (sic). If true it seems a waste of skilled talent.

Also, going by the number and composition of weapons recovered by Tigers it looks like 2 or more platoons were worsted.
When the side who retreated in haste leaving behind men and arms quote such pointed & high figures
(60) of enemies killed, it does nothing for their image?
It would have been better to just state that enemy casualties were inflicted.

from defencenet:

Sri Lanka Army (SLA) and Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) were locked firefights south of tiger stronghold of Kilinochchi since yesterday (15th). This front has been relatively quite for the past week, after both parties suffered casualties in major confrontations in Akkarayakulam and Vennerikulam. Fighting was reported in Vennerikulam North, Akkarayankulam, Pannei Kandamadu and Vannikulam when LTTE fighters resisted limited attacks by SLA's 58 division. Fighting was also reported in Andankulam in Mullaithiv district where the 59 division has been conducting operations. Around 20 LTTE cadres have been killed in these clashes and a similar number have sustained injuries. 4 SLA soldiers have been killed and 24 more have been wounded.

Meanwhile several of the remaining Non Governmental Organizations (NGO) in Kilinochchi have notified that they will cross over to government held territory by today. It is also reported that LTTE has forcibly captured some of the heavy vehicles and supplies from several NGOs that exited Kilinochci in the past few days.

hi bhairav,

When people commit suicide it isn't regarded as something great at all. Infact it is regarded as the "easy way out" from difficulties. Carrying a cyanide capsule is not a sign of bravery. There are so many captured LTTE cadres who didn't bite into their capsule when they were caught.

It's very difficult to call the LTTE's cause 'righteous' when they have killed so many innocent people in bomb attacks and killed so many Tamils themselves in their quest to create an ethnically 'pure' state. These sorts of things have no place in this day and age. Kidnapping young Tamil kids and sending them to fight is not 'righteous' at all; it's criminal.

One of my friends living in Canada has sent the following message,

Dear Friends;

The film Prabhakaran is shown in Canada on the following venues,

Show dates:

Mississauga - Sept. 20th 7pm - at Cine Starz (Central Parkway mall- Burnhamthorp & Central Parkway)

Scarborough - Sept. 21st 10am - Cineplex Odeon (Warden & Eglington)

Call for tickets: Daya 416-281-2849
Mahinda - 416 498 0783
Hasaka (mississauga) 289- 232 0841

And another source from Canada indicates that LTTE front runners have requested a permit to protest in front of Scarborough Cinema hall where film "Prabakaran" is to be screened.

So, the patriots in Canada, provide your support to the team who organizes the film and show up there.

This would be a good opportunity for Canadian Police to photograph the LTTE supporters and Organizers in Canada too.

Moshe, in the previous thread you talked about how fear of Israeli retaliation keeps terrorists in line.

There is no comparison. Israel can strike known targets - public Palestinian infrastructure is legitimate targets for them.

It is very clear that retaliation is not at all a prevention tactic against LTTE. LTTE will strike whenever it suits them. And they will expect retaliation any valuable targets will lay low while SLAF wastes bombs on runways.

Whenever there's intel, strike - don't waste effort impulsive retaliation.

With this closer to K'nochchi, it is pure stupid to think that we can get K'nochchi wihtout any SLDF losses.

Few years back SLDF lost more brave men and arms overnight without a fight just by trying to defend when LTTE attacked. Now SLDF in an offensive which has more planned/expected casualties.

Point is to minimize SLDF losses. Which battle planners know and handle better than people here (same for the LTTE and its backers here).

There will be more battles to come. Some may favour LTTE and more to SLDF. But it will be the end of LTTE and its a matter of time.

Regd the news : We all have a preference and likness for certain news. SriLankan supporters like to hear more LTTE deaths and Terror supporters like to hear SLDF deaths. When you get the news you dont like...don't shoot thy Messenger!

And if terror supporters dont like the news, Pl. don't waste your time and argue here. It only shows your frustration and fact that you don't trust defence.lk, DW and even Tamilnet (if you trust Tamilnet, what the heck you do here?). Divinity is a funny thing. It messes you up. Almost all cultures have tales of divinity at its worst… tales of Gods gone crazy. Divine beings have been known to go crazy from time to time… and wreak havoc among their mortal worshippers.

But when humans who are deemed ‘normal’ take it upon themselves to become divine… then it’s a whole different ball game. Things basically go wrong from the time the first thought, ‘I think I will play God’, crosses their mind. There are people in the past who did that… played god and basically played hell. Those who seemed ‘divine’, in the end brought nothing but suffering, pain, destruction and death to the poor people who followed them to the end. Talking of such “mortal” gods, Adolf Hitler, Pol Pot and the Father and Son Duo God Team, Kim Il Sung and Kim Jong Il are some that comes to my mind.

Tucked away in the Island formally known as paradise, the point where many cultures believe that Adam and Eve stepped down from Eden after their original sin, the land that is still considered to be paradise on earth, the land that I think the real God goes on Holiday to, the land I call home, is another crazy ‘God’. A lazy, fat, sickly man who rose from nothing but dust, blood, tears, pain and death of his own people, the Sri Lankans. A man who has spent his adolescence as a part time bank robber and a full time smuggler. Whose reign of terror has consumed so much blood that if collected would fill quite a large number of Olympic sized swimming pools. Using his ‘divine’ power he built himself a domain and built up quite a number of devotees. These devotees pay their respects to him in terms of money, support and in many cases, human sacrifices. (Last week there were some cattle sacrifices too.)

This is interesting. Every tiger come here and write as they were watching xx SLA killed, 00 LTTE not killed and xx SLA whepons captured.

Of course, LTTE can show thier own whepons to fool the diaspora. OR they might realy show captured whepons. So its upto the reader to beleive either side. This may depend of previous experiance of reporting from either side.

So according to LTTE/ tamiznut Rajiv Gandi was not killed by LTTE. Mavil Aru, sampur... still under LTTE. And the list continues.

This is true if "lost" means dead or injured. Otherwise if 20+ injured they will probably leave the whepons and remove the injured soldiers.

lankapura,

no mate. SLDFs DO retaliate and it is NOT a preventative tactic. it is called deterance.

if you carefully look at SLDF operations after 2006 there is a clear pattern of retaliation. and in 2006 GOSL offically accpeted so.

i talk of retaliation and deterrence based on what i have studied, not opinions.

SLDFs NEVER carried out attacks without intel. as has been said a hundred times retaliation is NOT a knee jerk reaction. it is a WELL thought after attack or a series of attacks. it is the timing and the selection of targets that make a strike a STATEMENT.

tigers HAVE understood the language (the only they understand) of retaliation VERY well.

BTW israel doesn't carry out DELIBERATE attacks on civilian targets. cowardly terrorists hide among civilians.

Kfir and Lavi strike jets are the BEST precision strike fighters on SMALL targets in the world and were developed to SURGICALLY remove trouble-makers with LEAST collateral damage.

Moshe Dyan said...

developments in nayuru are very intersting. if SLA can take a foothold in mulaitivu town area b4 the rainy season, it opens up a range of possibilities.

however, there are still a large extent of LTTE controlled area WEST of 59 division's latest advances. this worries me. these tiger areas should be thinned down.

as expected tigers are now deploying more and more of their "elite" cadres. it is time to increase the HARVESTING rate.

SF has done well.

Mi-24s had supported the offensive in akkarayankulam.

if tigers are building a trench WEST of A9 backed by so many other obstacles, i propose SLA moves in a NEW thrust from vavuniya THROUGH OMANTHAI. after UN and others (except for ICRC) leave LTTE areas, there is NO POINT in keeping OMANTHAI. there are other "humanitarian corridors".

this thrust will

1. take out LTTE defences against 57

2. take out surprises (a POSSIBLE flank attack) awaiting 59's deep advances in the extreme east

3. bypass trenches west of A9

4. PRE-EMPT vavuniya type attacks

Ninja...fully agree on your point and nicely put. Have you ever heard about the Pareto's law? It can be applied hear: 5% of the population is responsible for 95% of the Keppa/Boru/Falsehood. But according to the Eeelam Diaspora guys, its the other way around: 95% of the population is responsible for 95% of fallacies. Well my bro, time will tell.

moshe,

We can not move up from omanthai unless we can reach some strategic location. Like in the case of national front, where we just can not move to the LPPE FDL. We have to move further south to support, protect and hold the area.

Sitting in the forest won't be a good idea. We'll need to have natural or man made protection to hold on.

I guess SLDF does not want to increase the offensive fronts without having a clear advantage of doing so.

Even though there aren't any offensives, small teams might be operating in the jungles north of omanthai.

Vezha then played the Indians by forcing Theelpan to go on a hunger strike. His aim was to provoke the Jaffanese to force the IKPF out. Vezha does not trust and cannot be trusted by anyone. This guy really is something. Only the Jaffanese can produce something like this.

sala salang,

i have to disagree. there are no "natual barriers" in most of our FDLs. man -made barriers can be erected almost anywhere. that is not the case.

the reason why we don't advance through OMANTHAI is to keep the entry/exit point (it was there was almost 8 years) for humanitarian purposes.

you can argue what if we move forward then we can set-up a NEW entry/exit point. possible ONLY if tigers agree and they made it VERY clear that they won't co-operate. if we do attack the entry/exit we get into UN, etc. bad books.

bcos of this reason, your following statement is also not true.

"Even though there aren't any offensives, small teams might be operating in the jungles north of omanthai."

of course "DPU"/LRRP teams may be operating.

but now there are other corridors opening up and aid agencies are going to operate from vavuniya. then there is little use of the OMANTHAI entry/exit point. there are big advantages in whacking it as i explained above. the recent arti attack on the vavuniya base was launched from north of omanthai.

shan,
looks like it. but again if the A9 stretch to OMANTHAI is to remain under LTTE for humanitarian purposes, SLA won't cross anywhere south of killi. (unless of course very close to kili).

most goods/patients/UN,etc staff are transported from kili to omanthai.

i'm praying that there be an attack diregarding humanitarian BS after MOST NGOs leave and the battle starts for kili.

Then it will be a mop-up along A9 between kokavil and mankulam with forces moving slightly east of A9.

If mankulam falls first, a mop-up will happen between mankulam and omanthai along the A9.

Busted: Gang in £3.5m petrol station card con
by SUZY AUSTIN - Monday, September 15, 2008
The gang used surveillance cameras to spy on customers' Pin details Three fraudsters who bought their own petrol stations to steal customers' credit card details were on course to make £3.5million, police said last night.

The gang, which included two illegal immigrants, used secret cameras in the legitimate businesses to film customers keying in their Pins. They also bribed staff in other filling stations to pass on customers' details.

The three then cloned the cards in a house they had turned into a 'veritable fraud factory' and sold them to criminals around the world, prosecutors said.

Sentencing the Sri Lankan gang to between three and four-and-a-half years, judge Martin Beddoe said: 'This was a massive, very determined, well-organised and sophisticated operation.'

Ringleader and British national Ariyakunathasa Pirathesan, 28, and accomplices Sombalu Jeyaganesh and Sivanesan Mayilvaganam began the scam last year.

They used state-of-the-art electronic equipment - including covert cameras and card readers - to capture Pins at petrol stations and then produced fake cards complete with embossed writing and magnetic strips.

When they were arrested in March, police found 4,500 cards at the gang's house in Coventry, along with a BP name badge and a commercial valuation for a garage.

They were charged with £254,000 fraud but police estimated the scam could eventually have netted the gang - which flew as far as Malaysia and the US to sell the finished products - £3.5million.

Pirathesan, of Coventry, Jeyaganesh, 34, of Liverpool, and Mayilvaganam, 28, of Mitcham, Surrey, each admitted one charge of conspiring to defraud clearing banks at Southwark Crown Court.

COLOMBO: VIGILANCE OF A PASSENGER and timely action of a bus conductor saved many lives from an explosion that took place inside a CTB (Central Transport Board) bus near the Horton roundabout in COLOMBO-07 this afternoon (16) around 1.50 p.m..

One passenger, having noticed an unattended parcel on a rear seat of the bus plying between MATTAKKULIYA and MORATUWA, brought it to the notice of the conductor who immediately instructed the passengers to leave.

In the meantime, Police, on being informed of the recovery of the suspected parcel, reached the scene and took every possible step to minimize the damage that could course in an explosion.

After about ten minutes, the parcel exploded causing extensive damages to the bus.

Police and Security Forces commenced investigations.

Fighting near front line is not an easy task for faint hart, at this point we'll have to use some urban warfare tack-ticks and use Robots etc to identify real combat enemy

Tigers will setup lot and lots of trap, yes they could be deadly – if you under estimate, so use Heavy equipment to blast as much as you can then use small teams around towns, houses etc.. (Make sure those teams are Networked)

Before you attack them, make sure your enemy is totally tired, (play some loud heavy metal rock music 24/7) don’t let them sleep – never ever

thats it for now...this is a pulic network - you guys fill in the ---- blanks.

Today, BBC website (http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/south_asia/7618016.stm) has put a news of pull out of UN from Killinichchi. In the middle of the page in a blue color box it say ‘Killinichchi town, The capital of Kilinochchi District, it is part of the Northern Province of Sri Lank. Serves as the administrative centre and headquarters of the Tamil Tigers

Now I’m not an English master. But to my knowledge generally there can be only one ‘Capital’ in a country…

So I checked the thefreedictionary.com and it says the capital is A town or city that is the official seat of government in a political entity, such as a state or nation. (http://www.thefreedictionary.com/capital)

Oxford says the most important city or town of a country or region, usually its seat of government and administrative centre
(http://www.askoxford.com/concise_oed/capital_1?view=uk)

Now as a whole, this proves, that the BBC is openly trying to tell the world that LTTE is a legitimate governing entity as much as SL government, it has a capital, it has a nation to protect and it has administrative and judiciary powers in it. What kind of losers !

Small groups or flood the battleground with offensive formations? This must be a dilemma facing battle planners. Small group operations worked well when the ground was sparsely defended. However, now the LTTE chased from coastal towns and Tunnukai/Mallawi etc are concentrated behind trenches north of Nachikuuda and Kokkavil. Mass advance is risky considering these areas fall within the range of their artillery located north of Kilinochi and Poonaryn.

What then is the solution? Could it lie somewhere in the middle? There are two key areas to consider.

1. Size and composition of military unit and patterns of movement

Its important to formally redefine the size and composition of an infantry unit. The unit 'Platoon' is outdated and suits conventional large scale warfare. A platoon for example only has one radioman for nearly 30 men. This is clearly inadequate for this type of warfare. Concept of fireteam however is a perfect fit for both our infantry and recon requirements. A fireteam consists of 4 grouped by two teams making into a squad. This tactic was used in breaking stalemate in trench warfare over at the Western Front in WWI. While attacking or maneuvering, a fireteam spreads over a distance of 50 m. In open terrain as the dry zone, 500 m distance is more suitable. The offensive formation is a large number of fireteams infiltrating and attacking enemy lines. The firepower of mass scale attack is retained without losing maneuverability of small teams. The 500 m gap prevents large numbers of casualties from APM and standoff weapons.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fireteam

'Firerush' is a commonly used tactic to move forward in safety. Sideways movement is discouraged since it creates overlap and could get caught in friendly fire.

2. Real-time data acquisition and communications

The high trench walls conceal LTTE concentrations behind the FDL. This means we need 'eyes above' before breaking through their FDL. Eyes above that can guide fireteams into the right places by hovering UAV/other aircraft. A ground center captures AV of the battle ground in realtime for analysis. A team of image analysts with battlefield tacticians guide fireteams into soft spots along the FDL and pulls back when enemy concentrations are high or when artillery is detected. Mine clearing teams can also be directed to clear mines without falling prey to enemy fire. For this to be possible, each fireteam must have at least one radioman and be clearly identifiable.

Many radios (icom?) have been captured being smuggled into LTTE. Cant we use them?

DW, the difference is: your sources would know how many of their own are missing, simply by subtracting the remaining from the original number. But counting exactly enemy casualties is a bit more dificult.
