The details of a pretty elaborate plan to take-out the Radar by the LTTE has come to light thanks to a team of vigilant Sri Lanka Army Special Forces. The plan had three components. The first was a ground infiltration followed by Artillery fire topped-off by an aerial bombing by Zlin 143s to demoralize troops.
The first plan to infiltrate the SLAF base was given to a team of 12 Black Tigers who were to infiltrate the Army line from the side of the Irattaperiyakulam Jungle. Once the team breached the Army line, they were to move stealthily across to the SLAF base dressed as SLAF personnel. Then the signal was to be given to fire artillery and the planes would take off from an undisclosed location in Mulaithivu.
By the time the planes reach Vavuniya, all eyes will be on them and the Black Tigers would have plenty of time to destroy the radar station before the air-raid was over, thus effectively destroying the capability to detect any flying intruders from Mannar to Weli Oya.
Unfortunately for the LTTE a Team of Special Forces were on to it. The team detected the LTTE intrusion but remained calm, observing their every move. The Special Forces allowed the Tigers to creep in through the SLA defence-line but gradually encircled them without their knowledge. Once the intrusion went ahead unchallenged, the Tigers had called in the Zlins and the operation was on.
Unfortunately, the operation was over as soon as it had started. The Special Forces swung into action at the most opportune time killing all 12 members of the team but the Artillery fire had killed 12 soldiers from the regular forces and one member of the police and injured a few airmen.
The elaborate plan to fire artillery soon fell into disarray. 80 shells were fired by Tigers from inside the jungles but the WLR systems homed in on the battery destroying at least one canon.
Further pleasant news awaited the Security Forces. The Radar system was still in tact. Contrary to initial reports, the Radar station was able to track the planes before they descended and an F-7 managed to down one with a single missile shot.

Unless the Zlin exploded in a fireball in which case it would have been lost to the radar at once and then there would be nothing left to crash into the jungles.

The reports say that the plane caught fire and went down. Soldiers would naturally see this from their FDL's if it was within sight. They would not see it crashing of course, but you can determine where it would have crashed. As for it surviving, a Zlin with no armour is likely to be severely damaged if it was on the receiving end of an AA missile. Even if the pilot escaped by some chance, the plane would be badly damaged, probably beyond repair.

Here is my humble reply to your question on the Zlin that was purportedly shot down: till such time a knowledgeable gentleman/ well informed blogger can answer it with authority.
a) It seems to me that your are questioning: How can the solders in FDL' can see a Zlin going down (not the usual descent prior to touch down) ?
b) So to answer the question, I will first have to ASSUME that Zlin went down (otherwise there is nothing to see in the first place)
c) Next is to check what was the cause for it to go down: answer would be that the F7s had successfully engaged it
d) What would be the mode of such engagement: Air to Air Missile or cannon fire
c)Both would have caused the Zlins to immediately caught fire: un-armored and carrying residual amount of fuel should ensure such result.
e) So as you say in your own statement, against such a pitch black night sky a burning aircraft/ debris would have contrasted well for person on ground to see.
f) further more since the Zlin was in flight, therefor having a forward vector, the burning craft would have arced across for sometime rather than falling straight down like dead weight
g) we can see shooting stars which flashes only for few seconds: human peripheral vision is very good at picking such things. Its very sensitive to contrasting moving objects and most active during dusk/night conditions.
Thus we can conclude that a person on the ground under right conditions should be able to see such and event.
But there are lot of assumptions here: the height at which the Zlins caught fire, speed at which if was traveling, distance from the point of engagement to the FDL's etc etc.
Once again this is my humble opinion based on logic, but not an attempt to twist the logic/ find logic to prove a point.
Most happy to be ripped apart by facts and stronger logic
