Zlin downing further confirmed

Intelligence units have uncovered the general area of the crash-site of the TAF plane. The site is situated inside dense jungle at Mullaiyaveli, south of Mulaithivu. Unfortunately no UAV images taken upto now have been able to clearly show the site due to thick vegetation and immediate action taken by the LTTE to cover it up.

Civilian informants of MIC residing along the Mulaitivu-Oddusudan road have seen the plane descending in a ball off fire. Some had observed the plane from their Chena cultivations and others had heard the noise of the plane crashing. The area was then cordoned off by the Tigers.

Other credible sources have also confirmed the destruction of the plane. These come from radio messages recorded by 2MIC corp attached to 59 Division in Mullaitivu.

But the most credible information comes in a taped conversation between a Chengdu F-7 pilot and the SLAF Operations Control room at Katunayake. In this tape, heard by sources very close to DefenceWire, the F-7 pilot confirms the sighting and identification of the plane and requests permission to engage it with a missile whereupon the permission is granted and the pilot describes the Zlin taking a direct hit and plunging into darkness over Mulaitivu jungles.

These tapes might never be released to the public due to some sensitive information in them.

Meanwhile some web-based sources have distorted the battle between Black Tiger units and the Special Forces at Vavuniya claiming that there was an intelligence warning of the intrusion and that the Special Forces were lying in waiting for the intruders to come. Unfortunately this was not the case.

The operation was top secret in the LTTE, as it is with this type of suicide operation. It was betrayed only by the vigilance of Special Forces troops deployed in two bunkers in the Omanthai FDL.

The Special Forces platoon was from Special Forces Squadron 2 who were deployed in a small detachment where some injured soldiers and soldiers about to go on leave or had just returned from war were resting or recuperating from injuries but also forming a vital back-up in case of need. This is a normal practice in the Army.

It was these men who made the call to allow the Tigers to come in, instead of engaging them in front of the FDL, in which case they would have escaped and never called in the Zlins in the first place. True to the wise decision of SF soldiers (importantly no officers made the call) the Tigers ran for their lives in the first engagement, but towards the base, instead of the Irattaperiyakulam jungle, and were soon trapped. The entire SF platoon swung into action and started surrounding the now injured Black Tiger unit.

By last morning they were completely surrounded. Wounded and up against a mighty foe, the Tigers had their backs against the wall (or the fence in this case) after having lost the element of surprise. In desperation they called in artillery to take out the radar, but then the Special Forces made their final push killing 11 members of the team in one place with two committing suicide.

A guy called ruwan weerakoon emailed us sometime back offering to write in this column if we paid him money. We don't need journalists to tell us what's going on in the battlefield so we declined it. Anyway, we are all volunteers who want the truth to get-out and we do what we do due to motivations that are never economic in nature. I now see that this guy has been cutting and pasting stuff from the blog without even mentioning our name. So now do we send him a bill? or deal with him in another way? We will decide. But i tell you, this is pathetic. There are decent bloggers and news website people who are in touch with us as have an 'agreement' with us to copy. Its just courtesy. There are also others who take this information and let their imagination run riot and write all sorts of news items. All we have to say is, you the reader be the judge and keep an eye out for con artists who haven't even seen a shadow of war even in their dreams.

tkx indeed 4 the prompt
clarification.

1st of all DW is doing an excellent job = SLAF.

1. I never had doubts about the SLAF interception.
Note : F- 7 max speed 2400 KM Vs
Tin Can @ 240 KM

SLAF bird is a bomber & a intercepter flown by PROF. pilots.

The chase is like an Armed " Hummer Jeep " chasing a 3 x wheeler down the Galle Road , lol

Beside SLAF pilots are the best!!!!
Look @ how nato top guns performing in Afan....n

They kill + civilians / fellow mates ( friendly fire ) than the actual enemies .

look @ the most difficult scenario
out pilots are operatng @ despite the forced human shields.
Check the casuality figures & judge
it by yourselfs.

Remember the SLDF mission in the east. Zero civilian deaths despite
the forced human shields & other threats.

So BRAVO & hates off 2 SLAF!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Also SF may god blesssss U all.
U are our living heros!!!!!!

According 2 the inside info. the rader station is up & runing as never before.

So the Tin can Air force be aware!!

Next time = last time.

All SLANS including those of tamil origin shall financially ( word &
deed ) assist SLDF in their nobel mission to FREE our country from this Criminals = LieTTE.

The peelam state is a sick patient,
run by a very mental sick & very FAT thug.

Destroying our country & our people
& taking the most valuable of our society = The men & women of our forces.

This is big business for the Fat Paba... & the other Pigmies.

liberation story is just a smoke screen !!!!!!!!!!!!

Wake up

Every single day gone more money pumped in, so they can live well while sacrificing lifes of kiddy soldiers, women & civilians + the poor & the sick.

Even other Terror masters like
Al...a respects women & children.

The criminal gang is the worst scam of all.

Dear Tamil expats dont be fooled.

Your hard earned money is spend on a journey going no where !!!

The biggest portion goes to the account of the criminal gang bringing DEATH & MISSARY to the poor Tamils & others like.

After 30 + yrs of destruction what
have the Criminal gang achived,
BIG VOID & missary for millons of SLANS.

And still receving FOOD / MEDICINE / EDUCATION all the
rights from VERY SLAN state = People they keep destroying.

Judge it by yourselfs.

We all shall stand firm behind the Govt. & our SLDF on its nobel mission 2 free our country from the Criminal gang .

DW pls set up an corruption FREE tool so our forces have the very best 2 finish the mission & serve this very nation of ALL SLANS

DW,

Don't worry guys, your posts are the most accurate and the most objective of what is out there (why else would we incessantly hang around here).

Reading the BL article was like reading a very cheap thriller, I hate the way that idiot has written as if he saw everything and experienced everything; while honest men toil on in the trench lines and behind enemy lines.

Unfortunately, this is the way that most journalists operate. Please don't take it too hard.

I know that you are officers and gentlemen; anyway I hate it when people directly plagiarize from honest hardworking men like you. But truth will prevail, and we'll make it a point to highlight the plagiarizers, who feed off men like you.

About copying your articles by others, we have to expose those rogue journalists. I'm not quite sure as to how though. Ideas by all are welcome.

DW, any idea on how this LTTE team managed to infiltrate Vavunia? I asked earlier as well, any idea on the LTTE team who managed to escape into Padaviya area towards end of last month. Can this team be part of that group?

That bottom line article made me laugh. It looks like a compilation of stories taken from different sources put together by a child:

DefenceWire (2/9/08):
"SLA Artillery batteries fire incessantly on this FDL day and night. Each Battery has 12 howitzers and gunnery crews operating on them continuously."

BL (10/09/08):
"SLA artillery batteries fire incessantly on this FDL, day and night. Each battery has 12 howitzers and gunnery crews operating continuously."

Defencenet (9/9/08):
"Special Forces (SF) units of the Sri Lanka Army have now been deployed in the are to hunt down any remaining tigers who managed to infiltrate the FDL last night."

BL (10/9/08): "The Special Forces have now been deployed in the area, to hunt down any remaining Tigers, who managed to infiltrate the defence lines that night."

And the list goes on lol

A police constable who was seriously injuried during the LTTE artillery attack on Vavuniya police complex on Tuesday dared to carry six other injured officers by ambulance to Medawachchiya hospital despite his bleeding injuries that nearly incapacitated him.

While many others ran for safety constable 46592 Lasantha Sujeewa of Badulla took the wheel at the peril of his own skin to rush six fellow officers to hospital. The doctors of Medawachchiya hospital who provided immediate treatment to the injured police personnel including Lasantha transferred them to Anuradhapura hospital. The doctors who praised Lasantha for taking prompt action to rush the injured to hospital said that any further delay would have endangered the lives of two of the officers who were in critical condition. They said Lasantha deserves the respect of other officers of the police force.

One wise man...

//To create another appalling humanitarian crisis in the Vanni region, the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam, made use of the entry – exit point at Omanthai, to attack the Security Forces Headquarters and the Air Force Base located in Vavuniya early on Tuesday morning.Basil Rajapakse: "Government is providing the IDPs with food, medicine and shelter. We are providing whatever possible to the people."
Basil Rajapakse MP and a senior advisor to Sri Lanka President Mahinda Rajapakse said that Omanthai entry – exit point was kept open for the goods and essential food items to move into the Vanni region and the people in Vanni to enter into the Government area to go to hospitals, banks, to travel abroad and to attend to their needs. Making use of this situation, the Tamil Tigers moved their heavy guns very close to the entry – exit point to attack the Security Forces Headquarters in Vavuniya, he pointed out.

He said it was easy to read the Tigers’ sinister intention behind this move. One of the main strategy behind this meanest attack was to force the Government to close down the entry – exit point at Omanthai, located on the A-9 highway, to come up with a propaganda ploy that the Sri Lanka Government has created a humanitarian crisis to prevent peoples’ movements as well as the movement of food and goods in and out of the Vanni region.

Basil Rajapakse told the Asian Tribune that if the Government wants, it can easily take over Omanthai in a day, but the Government is keeping Omanthai open purely on a humanitarian consideration.//

Boys and Girls and anyone in between - nothing wrong being in between anyway : ))

2 things I noticed recently:

* Frequent use of word “Modaya” against Sinhalese by Tamil LTTE supporters.

* Frequent use of term “Tamil Home Land” by Tamil LTTE supporters.

Tamil LTTE supporters’ use these terms trying to get few points (some of it is utter BS) across. But if u think backward or “out of the square” then it is time for a hypothetical…

As most of the Tamil LTTE supporters claims, before King Vijaya 505 BC. establish Sinhala monarchy on this fair Island called “pearl of Indian ocean” Tamils were running the joint and having a “smoke & a pancake” in their home land.

I am not sure when Tamil LTTE supporters claim to have a Tamil home land that it is only the north and east of the Island or the whole Island. I am a very giving person so I’ll give u the whole Island. and so

Hypothetical: Tamils were running the joint before Vijaya crash their party with few of his friends who had few too many to drink.

So, when Vijaya and the boys sail in to Mannar port on this beautiful day the so called Intelligent Tamils who were running this joint but:

1) Failed to identified the threat pose by Vijaya and the boys whom had a moderate views and a sporty life style : ))
2) Failed to kick a bunch of boofe-heads out of their home land
3) Could not protect the best looking women on the Island ( Kuweni ) getting knocked-up by a hunk Vijaya
4) Didn’t had enough fire power to kill a gang of 800 or less
5) Vijaya and the gang of boofe-heads out-smart so called genius Tamil race
6) Vijaya and the gang of 800 bunk down and fought with few (10?? Or 15??) millions of Tamils and won the land
7) When out-smarted, so called smart Tamils failed to negotiate or offer a solution
8) So called Tamil warriors failed to fought back to win their land back
9) Failed to negotiates with their cousins in Tamilnadu to come and help them to kick Vijaya and boys out
10) Failed to produce a beautiful enough women to get Vijaya to marry after he divorce his first wife so lost the last chance to protect the crown.

For the next 2000 years (until English crashed the party), Sinhala people:

• had their “ smoke & Pancakes”
• knocked-up few “Miss world” from India
• went to Thailand for a quick massage
• Did “Ding-a-Dong” with Chinese
• Smoked best from Afghanistan,
• Rode Iranian horse and bet for the winners,
• Had a drink with Roman emperors and olive oiled skinned hoties,
• share a laugh with funny people from Russia,
• rap few songs with African home-boys,
• talked philosophy with Greeks after few drinks,
• swooped architectures with Egypt and bet they had a crack @ Cleopatra,
• built massive swimming pools and relaxed with Europeans

and ofcoz looked after and developed the beautiful country too!

So called brilliant Tamils lost the plot and whingh for next 2000 years??? and sabotaged the development of this beautiful county every time they could with the help of equally retarded cousins from Tamilnadu???????

So, who are the real modayas??????

And honestly speaking Tamil Ellam/Ezam/ or Meepasanam a bunch of retarded scums and no way Sri Lankans going to loose their land to MODA LTTE ponnayas!

So, MODA LTTE/Eelam/Eezam and MODA DI-ASS –PORA the only way to survive and develop is to join Sri Lankans and move forward.

AmmaGahai

P.S. Tamil Ellam/Ezam/ or Meepasanam : This is only a “Hypothetical” and u never ran the joint. So, snap out of ur wet dream before u have an orgasm.

Any “Tight Ars@” reply with-out sense of humor will be dismissed just like Eelam

bandara: pls don’t try to fill blanks but try coming up with an original (bet u can’t) so better try finding that “open pit toilet”

Even though u guys didn’t care about MasterCard and VISA commercial rights pls respect my “copy rights” on this piece.

If u guys felt like I rub salt to ur wounds pls donate some money to “Tsunami Fund”. VP need money as he began up-grading a flying Tuk-Tuk with Gold plated toilets, massage seats, personal bar with “Kassippu on the tap” and have employed few Buxom Blondies from Norway for his planed escape to Africa.

There is more than meets the eye. Ruwan Weerakoon is a normal contributor to Asian Tribune:

Tiger plane shot down
http://asiantribune.com/?q=node/13151

In another of his columns:
http://srilankainfocus.blogspot.com/2008/01/army-makes-steady-progress.html

"Why didn’t the so called HR groups condemn this attack or make any statements? Is this because the victims were Sinhalese? Not only Sinhalese, even Muslims were killed by the LTTE, but why were the HR groups tightlipped? An NGO, working with children and women, was silent regarding the above incident. This raises serious doubts about HR INGO’s, both within and outside Sri Lanka.

"HR should be applicable for the majority as well as the minority.
"

So when Mr. Weerakoon worked for AP he wrote about "Sinhala-dominated governments," but now he's whining about the rights of Sinhala people?????

Perhaps Mr. Weerakoon felt guilty about writing crap about Sri Lanka in the international press and turned a new leaf. More likely, he's a fraud and is still a fraud (judging by his plagiarizing DW).

I encourage DW fans to write appropriate responses to Mr. Weerakoon's contributions to Asian Tribune.

Dear Amma Gahai/Gahawi,

"* Frequent use of word “Modaya” against Sinhalese by Tamil LTTE supporters."

I use the term "Modaya" to describe Sinhalese who are stupid, and I am neither Tamil nor an LTTE supporter.

The truth is that just as there are dumb Tamils, there are dumb Sinhalese out there as well and both should be put in their place. Sri Lanka had "Modaya" leadership in 1983 which brought about this war and untold suffering for Sri Lanka. "Modaya" leadership is also the reason why we were not able to defeat the LTTE until recently.

"As most of the Tamil LTTE supporters claims, before King Vijaya 505 BC. establish Sinhala monarchy on this fair Island called “pearl of Indian ocean” Tamils were running the joint and having a “smoke & a pancake” in their home land."

The LTTE supporters are wrong, but the reason they claim this crap is because there had been certain Modayas who claimed that the Tamils should be 2nd-class citizens in Sri Lanka because the Sinhalas had come 1st.

The truth is that Sinhalas and Tamils had been in Sri Lanka for about the same length of time, and both had contributed toward Sri Lankan civilization and influenced each other.

There are some people who simply can't take bad news. If the war was going badly right now, I'm sure there would be people who would refer to DW as "traitor" and "Ponnaya" for telling us the truth.

SFs foiled the STUPIDITY of politicians. tigers that unashamedly eat food meant for civilians, etc., etc., WILL rob any other "HUMANITARIAN" bullshit the government HEAPS upon vanni. NOW there are ENOUGH humanitarian corridors and civilians CANNOT CROSS OMANTHAI anyway without tigers' permission!!!!!

cut the crap AT LEAST now. start a new northward thrust THROUGH omanthai area and make a MORE horizontal EAST to WEST FDL which is shorter, therefore much easier to man, reduces tiger reach DRASTICALLY to the south and takes away many more headaches.

Ban-Ki-Moon has recently made some noises about the ongoing insurgent problems and political solutions. The newly appointed UN commissioner for HR is also unknown for her stance. As part of its PR campaign, the govt must get proactive here. In order to reinforce to the world military option was necessitated due to the intransigence of LTTE. In order to do so, the govt must put forward a proposal that we know LTTE will never accept. The proposal should be to agree to a political solution respecting the territorial integrity of the entire island. There must also be one army, navy and air force. They must comeback within 2 weeks commencing this Friday. There will be no formal ceasefire, however assurance given there will be no major military push.

Why now? It will take at least 2 weeks for UN and other INGOs to withdraw. There will not be any major military action during this period anyway. If possible, the Muhmalai exit should be re-opened only for emergency patients after closure of Omanthai checkpoint. The govt must have an escape route for emergency patients. Muhmalai FDL can be opened because it will be dormant anyway for some time to come.

I do not think that the black cadre unit was key responsibility to destroy the radars. There was a arti sighting scope captured in the stuff they had. They were there to give correct coordinates to the arti batteries. To do so one has to infiltrate the concentric defences of the camp. It is in the last frame in the bottom right.

http://www.defence.lk/new.asp?fname=20080909_02
http://aruchuna.net/details.php?image_id=1319
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Artillery_observer

There is no way that with the weapons captured that they were responsible for the expolosions. In one instance the Special Forces say they allowed them to infiltrate and then surrounded them. Then where were the C4s or any explosives captured. The weapons they are carrying are really standard section infantry weapons.

Furthermore the fact that they were carrying few GPS kits was to zero their location and from that location give accurate information to the artillery units for weapon correction. The LTTE cannot have mustered so many guns and fired so many rounds for so long if they were only a back up. Unlike the army they also do not have sufficient guns.

There were 5 women in the operation. The Kutti Sri Mortar Brigade has a strong presence of women. Like in AAB the women's role was lesser of the men. There they took over the Anti Aircraft guns. Here they were used probabily due to their arti background and were responsible for sighting etc.

The gpmg is to hold onto to the area and give fire support when facing a large opposition. Hence the LTTE knew that once the arti fire started and with the accuracy of the rounds that their team of spotters would be deteted. Hence they were given the option to hold their position as long as it was necessary and perish at the location.

I am also suprised that the FDL duties are being carried out by the Special Forces. Special Force Team can be kept on standby. On infiltration they are alerted by the FDL troops and activated. If the army uses Special Forces for FDL duties then some top brass should be shot for that.

My read of the assualt based on various information gathered and I could be wrong.

A team of LTTE Black cadres had infiltrated the camp as far as possible without being detected. They set up their stuff and started giving information to the arti units. The guns would have already being set based on previous recce information. Yup there should have been few recce trips before this attack.

Once the attack started base forces reacted. The army taking command of ari bases here shows they have paid dividends. One being a standby team of Special forces who unlike in AAB need not be flown in etc. Secondly the military units are more capable at defence and attack then their air force (base defence forces) counterparts.

The accuracy of the incoming arti would have alerted the team and they quickly moved to surround the black tigers. On confirming damage to the radars, the cadres who hae called in the air wing to hit probabily the HQ or important instalation which would possibily be out of the arti range. The camps are big and important instalations are always kept deep in.

At this stage whether the base radars or outside radars directed at mulaithivu (possibily even indian help)could have alerted the airforce that the air wing was airbone. This was due to the aftermath of trinco attack alerting to the possibility of mulaithivu as a launching pad. Also intelligence which has not been sucessful in gathering ground information in the Vanni region. Simple deducions who lead to belief mulaithivu who be the best location for a secretive launch pad.

The F-7 could have been on standby mode. However the LTTE dropped their payload and were turning back. The F-7 must have zeroed in on the Zlin.

Here the pilot must have locked his missle on the plane. However its suprising that he needed to ask permission to engage the target unless the command was held at the base or if he was not Sri Lankan.

However if he used the F-7's cannons to target the Zlin, i would believe it would have come down. Using the missile on the Zlin would have been ineffective. Maybe some enthuastic guy reported it out and the polticians banged on it. the Zlin would have also immediately dived to the ground from the attack as the pilot would have been scared shit.

Like Prabha got killed in an air raid story. making amountain out of a molehill. The people are telling that the FDL saw it, the now chenna caltivators were up at 3-4 am looking at the fireball.

Unknown said...

The pilot whether he did destroy or not the Zlin has put some fear into the LTTE Air Wing modus operandi. This is in a way a sucess. However the 2technicians as the Indian High commission official said were there to maintain the radars. They could be permanetly attached and the maintanece could be a cover story. Looks like the LTTE saw the possibilty that the radars were faulty to launch the attack.

The LTTE photos are taken months ahead of the operation. The black cadres need time before they can slowly be forward so deep into Army territory. The photo realeased is clearly photshopped to replace a person and this was done based on information of the cadres who have escaped.

Putting too much value into the photos is not use.

In Sri Lanka today selling praise of Mahindha and family and telling lies keeps you safe. Unless you want to get bashed up by Mervyn or disappear in a white van.

Iqbal is a senior journalist. Yes you could accept a bit more indepth knowlege before he writes some stuff. However he still writes in this climate of indimidation. Chandrika did it to Island newspaper when she came to power.

The blog has been an easy avenue for internet news. How many people would turn their blog into a newspaper and publish this informaion to the masses without access to the facilities.

Alot of people do things for the sake of money. Basil wanted to deal for his brother with the LTTE and then today theu say they are the holy sons defending Sri Lanka. Do not shoot the messenger.

Ali thanks for the compliments, here is something for B.Raman

While the Air Force version of the incident claimed that the Indian-supplied radar did not suffer any damage, the version given by the Sri Lankan Navy in its web site did admit some damage to the radar, but it claimed that it was slight. A web blog run by the Sri Lanka Naval Intelligence said: “ Reports indicated that the radar system was slightly damaged after a bomb fell close to it. Two Indian nationals operating the radar system were injured in the blast.”

Unknown said...

Even defencenet stated that they were artillery spotters under "LTTE aircraft intercepted over Mullaithiv"

Wonder who Raman has called a navy intelligence blog? He is former RAW and not stupid though I do not agree with some of the things he says. This is because he is Still a former RAW guy who likes to protect Indian intrest first. I take his words with a pinch of salt. He states all the stuff that the SLA gets from indian's enemies reflecting Indians frustrations.

Too bad that there were 2 indian technicians in the raid. Hence he got his update quite fast on what really happened. He is smart enough to mask the fact by qouting other sources. Guess Indian radars would have picked up the planes and they know wether they were downned too.

This article is about the Russian Army's response to the Georgians. The Russians simply bulldozed the Georgians with their sheer numbers.
Their tanks were 1970s vintage T-72s but their numbers were overwhelming. Ultimately with the LTTE, the SLA will overwhelm the LTTE with sheer numbers.

While the Sri Lankan Armed Forces repeatedly exaggerate their successes and play down their losses, the LTTE generally gives a factual account of the battles. Even if it did badly in the battles, it does not try to cover up its failures. This is one of the reasons for the high credibility enjoyed by the LTTE's statements in the eyes of its cadres, the Tamil population and diaspora abroad. The LTTE version of the Vavuniya operation has more credibility than the version put out by the Sri Lankan Armed Forces.

This is the opinion of external observers. It not that LTTE/TN does not lie, it just that is lies are believable unlike the stuff that appears on defence.lk. I find this Tamilnet article about SLAF bombing middle of Kilinochchi is amazing.

Sri Lanka Air Force (SLAF) Kfir bombers attacked Ki'linochchi town Wednesday around 7:00 a.m., wounding a 90-year-old man and a 11-year-old boy and causing damage to 23 houses. A 23-year-old pregnant mother was to be operated due to fetal death, caused by the bombardment and a 1-year-old child was admitted in fainted state, medical sources said. The attack has taken place at the heart of the town where NGO offices, residences, civilian facilities and other offices are located. The Sri Lankan bombers fired 16 bombs and deployed lethal air bursts, causing wide destruction. NGO office of Seva Lanka and a store of OXFAM are located 100 meters from the attack site.

Despite all the use of high power bombs with air burst charges, only 3 injuries were reported. Buildings as close as 100m remain intact. To some reason, these bombs magically appear to be acting in very small area.

Same thing worries me mate. Even though we move the radars bit further it’ll be still within their arty range as they know the approximate coordinates.

I see your point about Omanthai entry/exit point. Better if we could move ahead and dislodge arty positions or their ability to get us within arty range.

Unknown said...

Defencewire, why do you think they used the Zlins. Its only to go to places where it will require more manpower and losses to achieve an objective. Hence as I said once and again I do not think the ZLins were meant to take out the radars. Its probabily something else within the camp possibly the HQ or commanders bunker.

The issue is that the Air force managed to track and possibly target the Zlins. Do you think the LTTE is stupid enough to relaunch the planes now that they know this has happened.

That is why I said that they have to rethink their modus operandi. Secondly thats why i said its a sucess for the air force in that sense.

Unknown said...

During the first world war Zlin type low level planes were intially used as Arti spotters. It was along the war did they add machine guns and then mature to their uses in the 2nd world war.

I do not think the Zlins were used as spotters. The reaction of the airforce is also typical as ramman said in his article.

Pro LTTE sites do not necessarily lie. They often do not report a loss. Example they do not report the loss of towns so far. Thats why the Pro LTTE crowd comes to defencewire to read about the happenings.

Defence establishment on the other hand overplay their victories due to politicial pressure. Mahindha and gang are no different. Maybe if a son/daughter to serve in the front line or the person themsleves needs to have unifrm experience is set as a pre requiste, some of the goons would not be allowed into politics.

Unknown said...

@ navindran

Yes. I also think that Zlins were only a diversion here, just like the AAB attack. The black tigers were the main strike force.

Given the accuracy of a bombing run with a Zlins specially under the cover of dark Its hard to believe that tigers will rely on Zlins for the main objective of a operation like this.

And even with we got one of the tiger plane down it again proved that we should rely more on missiles(at least MANPADs) rather than AA guns!!!

Do we have to get personal when we correct a mistake of another blogger?

I don't think so. Its apparent all the participants here are not of military background, thus one should expect some "Stupid" comments for which I too am guilty of.

Most of the time I see unnecessary personal remarks are mixed in to good responses.

While we come from different professional backgrounds, there is one thing that unite us: that's the love for the country and hunger for accurate (as possible) news. So the humble suggestion is avoid attacking one another, where its not warranted.

Such Vitriol is better spent on the enemy ( I don't mean to shower their agents with copious amounts of filth)

After all most of this corrective responses must be coming from military bigwigs(ex/ present), thus such people can afford to cut us some slack.

Vavuniya raid : By B. Raman
[Wednesday, 2008-09-10 21:26:12]
The Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE), which is increasingly under pressure due to a war of attrition waged against it by the Sri Lankan Armed Forces in the areas controlled by it in the Northern Province, launched a surprise land-cum-air attack on a vital military complex of the armed forces at Vavuniya, about 260 kms North of Colombo, in the early hours of September 9,2008. Even after allowing for the usual exaggeration by the spokesmen of the Armed Forces in projecting the progress made by them, it is evident from independent reports that the LTTE has been forced to fight a defensive battle to retain the territory under its control and to prevent a weakening of its conventional capability due to the loss of its weapons holdings during the battle and its inability to replenish them through smuggling from abroad. While the morale of the LTTE's experienced officers and cadres remains high, it has not been able to reverse the tide of the battle against the armed forces. Even its wing responsible for mounting acts of terrorism in Sinhalese territory has been facing difficulty in mounting spectacular terrorist strikes due to a shortage of cadres trained in suicide terrorism and low stocks of explosives. While the Army's oft-repeated hopes of being able to defeat the LTTE decisively on the ground by the end of this year seem over-optimistic, the tide of the war continues to be in favour of the army. There are two questions involved---- defeating the LTTE conventionally and destroying its capability for continuing its struggle for Tamil Eelam through acts of terrorism. The achievement of both these objectives will depend upon a critical weakening of the morale and motivation of the LTTE officers and cadres, leading to increasing desertions and splits in the organisation. There are no signs of such a weakening of the morale and motivation. Despite the repeated and ruthless use of air strikes against the LTTE by the Sri Lankan Air Force (SLAF) and despite the vast superiority in numbers and equipment of the armed forces due to regular flow of supplies from Pakistan, China, Israel and even India, the LTTE has been fighting doggedly, inflicting increasingly heavy casualties on the Army, which is not admitted by the Government. Thus, the attrition is on both sides. The only advantage enjoyed by the Army is that it is able to make good the attrition through material procured from Pakistan, China, Israel and India with money given by Iran, whereas the LTTE has not been able to make good the attrition. The continuing strong morale and motivation of the LTTE officers and cadres and their ability to take the armed forces by surprise became once again evident from the spectacular and audacious attack jointly mounted by the planes, the artillery and suicide commandoes of the LTTE on the Vavuniya military complex, which co-ordinates the operations of the Armed Forces against the LTTE. It was as spectacular and audacious as a similar attack on an SLAF base at Anuradhapura in October last year and as well-planned and well-executed. The operation, which lasted about three hours, started with a sustained artillery attack in the dead of night followed by bombing by two aircraft ( Zlin 143 )of the LTTE and this was followed by the infiltration of the complex by 10 suicide commandoes (Black Tigers), five of them women. All of them died during the attack, but not before killing 11 personnel of the security forces and badly damaging the equipment kept in the complex, including an Indra radar supplied by India. Among those injured were two Indian radar technicians. It is not clear whether they had been permanently attached to the radar station or come there on a short visit to do the periodic maintenance of the radar. The injuries sustained by the two Indian technicians were not life threatening, but required initial hospitalisation at Colombo. While the LTTE has stated that both its aircraft returned safely to base, the SLAF has claimed that one of its fighter planes (F-7s) ,which had taken off from the Katunayake airfield near Colombo on gettng information of the approach of the LTTE planes ,managed to chase one of them as they were returning to their base after the bombing and shot it down over the skies in the LTTE-controlled Mullaittivu area. However, the SLAF spokesman ( Squadron Leader Sanjaya Adhikari ) admitted that it had no video coverage of this engagement in proof of its claim. As it did after the Anuradhapura raid of last year, the SLAF has tried to project the LTTE raid as a fiasco, which failed in its objective. However, independent reports say that as had happened in the past, the SLAF was once again taken by surprise and was slow to react. The LTTE aircraft managed to drop their load of bombs in the vicinity of the radar station and flee from the scene without being intercepted by the SLAF planes. Two Indian nationals operating the radar system were injured in the blast.” The two LTTE aircraft were over the complex for about six minutes. During this period, any SLAF aircraft taking off from Katunayake could not have reached Vavuniya and intercepted the LTTE aircraft. Even if it is established that the radar has been severely damaged, if not destroyed, this should not affect the on-going ground operations of the Sri Lankan Army. The mastery of the skies enjoyed by the SLAF during day time ensures that the LTTE planes could not pose a threat to the troops engaged in battle. The absence of a radar would not also affect the punitive air strikes made repeatedly by the SLAF on LTTE-held positions. The successful Vavuniya raid would be a morale-booster for the LTTE cadres, but would not turn the tide of the battle against the armed forces. again bullshit.

in war of attrition what matters MOST is the EXTERMINATION of one group. access to money (and therefore weapons) is secondary. LTTE will not run out of money but WILL (in future) run out of cadres. the writer tries to cover up this eventuality.

my personal opinion is that the latest Zlin flyby is mainly too boost their sagging morale both locally and internationally. The other is of course as a diversion.
normal SLA troops are not very happy about the presence of Zlins cos they feel like it's a foe they cant deal with...not with their usual armaments. sort of a fear psychosis for our own troops.
I heard that some bombs dropped by the Zlins were duds... seems to be happening again and again to LTTE...
There targeting "accuracy" seems to have improved so had one of those bombs landed smack on the target things would be different...
Zlins have always been a mistary since we could never shoot one down until recently, we didn't know where they were based, whose flying them etc etc...
Them making SLAF red in the face even after processing superior equipment has always worked to please the diaspora. A main component in their funding.
Looking at places like LNP, even after one Zlin going down and the other probably taking multiple gunfire hits... LTTE has pleased the diaspora achieveing their objective :)
just my 2 cents

B.Raman's article as blogged by "Shyam the Sham" brings up quite a few interesting points.. First of all he claims that the 10 suicide attackers in Vavuniya were responsible for all the SLDF deaths reported before they were cornered and killed. That brings up the question, does that mean that the 60-80 artillery shells that every one seems to agree on as having fallen in or around the camp did not cause any deaths???
He also claims that the LTTE figures are factual and the MOD is grossly exaggerated to favour the SLDF! What is this man talking about? Get your head out of your ass dude! I totally believe the that the Truth is the first casualty of war, but to claim that the LTTE is a more credible source for news just is the most absurd claim ever! Well apparently his source of information is the RAW. When you consider that this is the same agency that nurtured and mentored the LTTE in its infancy its no wonder that they still follow their paternal instinct of being partial towards them!
Have these so called military and humanitarian experts of the world forgotten that its the SLDF that are laying their lives down to save this country and all its people from the clutches of the most facist, brutal terrorist organisation in the world? Well Raman and his Tiger sympathisers can believe whoever.. For the rest of us here DW will do fine thanks...

We are reading DW its web based wel known blog. An unforunatly some fuc....ing jounalists who are working for some private Company news papers copy cat DW article and put under their name. Including Riwan Weerakona, Keerthy Warnakulasooriya, Ranga (Lak bima News) and many follish writers depening on DW.

I think DW shoul put add on the top od their site saying " If you fool Journalis you can put and publish all of contect of the DW under your name" .

So funny Sri Lankan journalism. This only answer to second commnet.
Thanks,
Comment by nor meber of DW but Im also obser all of Defence Column in Sri Lanka

Sinna Thambi did you understand what i am trying to say.

"10-15 Black Tigers are to give correct coordinates to the arti batteries is really a joke.

If the assumption was made based on the number of Male-Female Black tigers, you are utter Idiot."

Firstly 10-15 black tigers are not necessary to give coordinates but they are there to give support till the line falls thats why there are gpmg etc. Maybe you should read my comments. Unfortunately I write sometimes without realising that my post are split and not my train of thought.

Do you really read what i have read. LTTE has never used so many female cadres in one mission before. Kutti brigade is a women wing. They were also probabily the "cheapest" to scarfice for such a mission. The men were for other roles.

You need to have basic military knowledge an analyse my statements before you comment as such. Even when the Israelis use females, they often do not go for frontline roles.

Panhinda tamilnet articles do not necessarily lie does not mean they never lie. The gist of my point is that they do not report their defeats. Do you get all the losses of the Sri lankan forces in any website expect that of Tamilnet. Example 4 soldiers killing their comrades in a mistaken ambush. The fact is even when people come here and discredit defencewire or called tamilnet tamilnut, they still go and read because you never are confident of whether what is being said is the whole truth.

Do you think B Raman has no agenda for India on his writtings. There is no such thing as unbaised reporting. The best you can get is from a third party with no intrest in the conflict. B.Raman wants to hit Sri Lanka but at the end he adds a sweetner that LTTE will not win. He wants to not upset certain elements but still hit Sri lanka.

Emotional argument,

Before Active Radar in vavunia, F7 + night flying capability + A2A missiles , did TAF fly over Colombo daily ?

You are telling same thing again and again by changing some words. And you are indirectly telling all the Black tigers did their duty successfully. lol

Giving the correct coordinates
to the arti batteries can be a part of their role, may me 2 black tigers for that role.

(oru kallin erendu mangai..)

But their key responsibility could be get into the base and doing the maximum destruction.

again you are talking about the women black tigers......

I believe at present out of all black tigers more than 75% are women.

(aanai vida pennukke unarchigal athigam..)

If you need to win a war, you need to understand it.

You cannot take or accept what you see. Always, there is a bigger picture which you fail to see or understand.

DW is trying to report what has happened and insight to the whole episode (may not be the 100% truth as that should not end up in this page anyway) where as can you find a single website which does it from the other side.

For LTTE, there are no middle paths. Either you are with me or you are with the enemy. This could be a strength for 2 decades, but with time, I think, this will be proven to be disastrous for LTTE.

Like forces battling in north you are a hero in cyber information battle countering tamilnut propaganda.
We believe what you are reporting is the truth or close to the truth unlike many other sources.

Moving on to war, you mentioned we managed to destroy one of their arti using WLR system. Can you clarify more. Isn't this a significant victory, because they must have moved arti from Pooneryn?

"It seems to me that Tamils, in general, are suffering froma massive inferiority complex - "

Could you please remove this , a very polite request. We are against terrorism and the brutal Sun_Goat, but not with the tamils.

After all please ask this question:

Lakshman Kadirgammar is a Tamil, and has he got an inferior complex.

Everybody has some sort of inferior complexity, you can't help. Ultimately we have to live together as Sri Lankans not Sinhalese and Tamils. No offence.

assasinrajive,

As some commenter here told once,

You people are so equal to spectators who cheer for every 1 run even their team is gonna loose the match.

Remember! This is the situation you are in at the moment!

- You have only 1 wicket and 1 over.

- You have to score 100 runs in order to avoid an innings defeat.

- But even if you score 100 you lose.

Understand the situation, You are going to lose the match!

About this Indian 'expert',
I will tell you now, naval intel does not run a blog. Not even MIC has a blog or even a website. Someone has either tricked Raman or he has tricked himself. The reason WE are running a blog is that it keeps us safe FROM BOTH SIDES. Not that these fellows can bump us off that easy, but it helps us do what we do when we are anonymous. Believe me, neither side wants this type of detail getting out.

Some of our readers, from both sides rejected us from time to time because it made them feel uncomfortable when 'their side's' dismal performance was revealed. But now we can see people realizing where we come from and are starting to engage us with their heads rather than their emotions. We salute you for that and encourage you to do more of that. We firmly believe that the day we drop our emotions and start seeing things the way they really are, we will make our country better place for everyone.
