Mysterious attacks in Vanni

A motion has begun in the Vanni to limit LTTE and other movements. Exact details of these activities cannot be revealed as the Army may deny them for purposes of safeguarding its overall plan of action. One objective of these Special Operations is to limit movements of LTTE leaders and the the rapid mobilization of LTTE cadres from theater to theater.

Unspecified actions have been planned and are currently being taken simultaneously, in all parts of the uncleared area in the Vanni, as part of an overall strategy to destabilize the enemy. This is in addition to aerial attacks and LRRP operations, both by the Special Forces and the Commando regiment. Plans are also afoot to put pressure on the LTTE to expedite the release of civilians or to declare Demilitarized Zones. Although we are unable to disclose what they are, close observations would reveal the nature of these activities.

Meanwhile the Nachchikuda-Vannerikulam LTTE trenchline, which was holding back the 58 Division for weeks now, is failing.

LTTE defences in Vannerikulam have collapsed completely and the Tigers have started abandoning the fight gradually, in the western coast. A few LTTE units have remained in Nachchikuda though the village has been flanked from the east. Withdrawing cadres are now being absorbed into the LTTE defences at Iranamadu.

The level of resistance offered to the 58 Division in Pooneryn in general, is observed to be dwindling. This could be more out of necessity than due to a strategy by the Tigers. The LTTE's demonstrated need has been to prolong the SLA's siege on Kilinochchi by inducting more fighters into trenches being newly constructed.

Field Commanders whom we spoke to mentioned that the gradual vacation of Pooneryn is a huge gamble for the LTTE considering the 58 Divisions clear intentions to capture Pooneryn. This Division is a highly mobile offensive division spearheaded by 2 Commando Regiment.

Their understanding is that if the 58 managed to reach Pooneryn, Paranthan would become untenable. Considering the fact that the 57 has laid siege to Kilinochchi from Iranamadu, and Akkarayan, Paranthan is now the back-door to Kilinochchi. It is also the door to Elaphantpass.

I remember, Lalith Athulsthmudali said in Moratuwa around 1984 "we have to deal with north problem in one hand and "Dakune kullappuwa" on the other hand. that is what I am refering right now, this "dakune kullappuwa" also a cancer to SL. We need to eradicate LTTE as well as "dakune kulappuwa" also.

Please remember action and reaction teory, if we have acted responsibly, this situ couldn't have arised at all. half of the blame for "dakune kullapppuwa".

At least do the right thing now. traet all people just and equal.

Otherwise my Lanka will never be a place to live peacedfully.

Take it to ypur log head now, b4 it is too late!

NFF calling the govt to stand firm against india is understandable.

UPF praising india is also understandable.

JVP and UNP stand on it is highly suspicious. although it is is good IF they are genuine, they MIGHT have other plans too.

govt should NEVER go for a confrontational or antogonisation approach. india is doing a reasonable job in averting LTTE weapons transport. we need this support; indian arms, etc.

we've seen the RCL being used in the front line, ca you tell us more about this weapon and it's use in the front line

Unknown said...

shan,

The RCL is a crew served direct/indirect fire support/Anti tank weapon.

In the case of SLA, it plays an important role of "bunker buster" along our FDL's where LOS can me established most of the time.

The 106mm RCL (M40 or its many copies made in Pakistan, Iran, India) we use is customarily mounted on M-151 Jeep (or similar vehicles as Land Rover 90/110/130 or Land Cruiser BJ jeeps.

But we are now mainly using it in a "dismounted" manner, where the crew moved the tripod mount, weapon (inc, sight I doubt the .50cal spotting rifle is used anymore) and a few rounds of ammo.

The RCL round pack a bigger warhead than most RPG (HEAT & tandem round) and is more accurate most of the time. This helps to take out bunker/fortifications & booby traps. Plus there is a variety of types of rounds available for them. HEAT, HEAT-T and some great APERS-T (latter which I doubt we have, but would be ideal) Both POF & OFBI makes 106mm rounds so we can get them with relative ease.

DW noted that we now employ the Type-78 82mm RCL which are more light weight and man portable, thus more flexibly employed in the various roles.

Ninja,

When you say..

/*
I think the figures given by history are realistic if you divide them by two.
*/

I believe you are correct..

I may be wrong with the numbers that I have given about LTTE's military strength, but these figures are not just sky born, you can verify these figures to difference sources you can find on the internet. So if you are to drop them by half, (you may be correct) you need to give a source. Is there any reliable source that you used to say that??

MR can forget about reelection if there is any appearance of backing down or giving into Indian influence.

It is not the Indian Govt, Indians, Karunanidhi or Tamils in Tamil Nadu that have elected our Sri Lankan government - it is us... the Sri Lankan people living in Sri Lanka. Not the diaspora, not the dual citizens, not the Sri Lankans living amongst the IC, but us Sri Lankan citizens who live in Sri Lanka.

Send for the Indian envoy in Sri Lanka and deliver a powerful message - that where internal matters of Sri Lanka are concerned, we will not brook any intervention. Do it now and do it diplomatically.

Is India Ready to take responsibility if this stoppage of war initiates a civil war in Sri Lanka?Causing in the total collapse of any government control over the action of the people. The people know the result of peace talks, no peace talks should take place unless the LTTE lays down every and all of its weapons, howitzers, SAM's all the weapon hauls they still have and most importantly is the Indian Government going to take responsibility from the day a ceasefire begins of all and any life of any civilian lost due to the consequence ofany action taken by the LTTE against any Sri Lankan no matter where in the world.

I don't care if all these developments emanating from India 'Demarche' or not (DBS Jeyraj is a LTTE-biased pigmy), political posturing or not, but i would feel a whole lot confident if we had some high-calibre AA misiles at all thr frontlines. Just in case, the Indian Airforce feels like coming to the rescue in the guise of by air-dropping food for 'helples' refugees (but in fact they'll be arms and explosives to replenish the depleted LTTE lot).

If they come this way, they should not be allowed to leave.

The Sri Lanka Navy has to tighten all the waterways, damn burgers will try to come inn by sea with supplies for the LTTE.

LTTE Killed Rajive Gahndee, likewise

Terror must dealt with terror, if tamilnadu is too aggressive about what happening to LTTE then, what we have to do is get couple of LTTE terrorist to attack Indian Nuclear Plant, and that will solve all problems in Sir Lanka and India.

Everyone can live happily ever after, and end of the story.

Regarding the relationship with India and China....

We should stick to good ethics. We should not resort to low tactics such as using one country against the other. Genuine friendliness towards the both would give us good dividends.

General Indian population and the press (outside Tamilnadu and Kerala) are on our side. We should have a faith in them and keep them informed.
And we have to make Big Indian political players to understand that if they behave recklessly then they are going to loose a genuine friend. Otherwise they loose almost nothing.

A friendly approach with India??

India is having a one and only one goal, and that is to become the power house of the reagion..

But given the current situation, in the shot run India has limited options.. as I said before even if we (SL) want to stop the war, still we cannot.. So how India going to stop it.

It is with a carefully planed diplomatic approach that we can win India,

just for a friendly approach, no noo..
