A ferry to link Sangupiddi with Chava

After staring at it for many months and consequent to the deployment of the SLA's newly formed Task Force 3 (63 Div), the Sri Lanka Army today decided to cross the A-9 highway from the west to the east and capture Mankulam as part of what seems to be an objective to capture Oddusudan and then Mullaitivu. The A-9 was freed from all military operations to facilitate the movement of civilians but the LTTE prevented the civilians from moving out.

The 57 Division, which cleared Adampan and Mallavi went further north via Uylankulam spearheaded by Lt. Col Subhashana Welikala. The same officer was posted to the 63 Division now forming a west to east mobility corridor via Olumadu to Oddusudan as part of TF-3/63 Division. The 57 encountered some resistance in Kokavil last week but are now well set to capture the ground around the Kokavil Rupavahini tower.

The 58 Division, which captured Pooneryn also cleared the area upto Kalmunai Point on the same day, although some sources still claim the area is under LTTE control. The area is completely ridded of LTTE. The Army now plans to deploy a large ferry capable of transporting 500 persons and 5 buses at one time to cross the 4km lagoon from Sangupiddi to Chavakachcheri. Similar ferries were deployed after the Eastern Province was liberated. This will not only ease SLA movements but also open Jaffna to the outside world.

The A-32 has also been cleared and preparations are being made to reopen the road in December. Repairs to the road, including the reconstruction of bridges and culverts will be handled by Army engineers with support from the government's engineering department.

Meanwhile troops from the 58 Division who bisected the Pooneryn-Paranthan road were less than 9km away from Paranthan Junction. Field Commanders are of the opinion that the LTTE would start withdrawing from Muhamalai and Kilinochchi as they get closer to Paranthan. The 53 and 55 Divisions and the Mechanized Infantry Divisions stepped up attacks on the LTTE FDL there. However, no plans have been made to break lose from the FDL. The situation might however change when the 58 reaches Paranthan.

The 130mm howitzers and 122mm mortars stationed in Pooneryn by the LTTE had been withdrawn after the fall of Nachchikuda, sources confirmed to DefenceWire. Field Commanders told DefenceWire that like in the East the LTTE will move their assets around until they get cornered and eventually destroy their own assets or leave them to be captured or destroyed by SLA or SLAF.

Top article, finally, on Times of India:

"... Tamil popular culture especially cinema has helped this sub-nationalism gain deep roots in society. The response to the Tamil cause across the sea is not merely sympathy for a people who have lost homes and livelihoods but a deep sense of identification with a people who are part of an imagined cultural nation....

The tigers....have militarised the political space so much that democratic dissent and negotiation are impossible. This political vision, limited to a spatial understanding of nationhood, is hardly emancipatory. An alternative vision of politics is necessary to recover the political space for the Tamil minority in Sri Lanka. The LTTE, which has systematically destroyed civil society in areas under its control, is unlikely to provide it."

I like your idea to down the Zlins using GalKatas.

Here is something better.

Why don't we form a new regiment: MAAU: Madinna (Toddy Tappers) Anti Aircraft Unit.

Enlist all the Madinnas from Vanni to Galle and arm them with AK47, Galkatas, Sten Guns and what not....and station them on Coconut trees (with strict orders not to touch Raaa) during night time.

They should be able to down the Zlins as the birds are known to hug the treeline.

Strict instructions to be given to them to light up the skies as soon as they hear the Takarang noise.

From our TamilNut

The SLA attempt to advance, from Vannivi'laangku'lam towards Maangku'lam and in south of A'lampil towards Kumizhamunai, aims to cut off the access routes between Mullaiththeevu and Vavuniyaa, officials engaged in humanitarian mission said expressing concerns on food and medical supplies to the uprooted civilians of Vanni, now densely populated in LTTE controlled Northeastern territory of Vanni.

In the meantime, Sri Lankan military circles in Colombo anticipate heavy battles in the forthcoming weeks as the SLA was expected to step up the offensive operations and the LTTE to encapsulate its defensive region with stringent combat coordination of its Northern, Western and Southern defensive formations.

All the good news. I am very happy to see the word Oddusudan. And can't keep silent on anything but Oddusudan :)

More important than the capture of Mankulam is the fact that they have moved some distance towards Olumadu. In my view Mankulam, Kilinochchi and EPS shud not be captured with heavy casualties in us. The three symbolically important nodes can turn obsolete based on the capture of other militarily important sections. Paranthan, Oddusudan etc are such. The fall of the prior should be an eventuality in the capture of latter.

I hope that Mankulam capture was not costly.

Anyway, now we have focus on Oddusudan. Interesting to know how prepared they are for the newest move. Oddusudan may fall even before Paranthan, if they are not prepared.

Several concerns. Firstly, this move to Oddusudan is the first time we are going to be sandwiched. For every move of 57th there was 58th leading them in shore. But there seem to be no movements in either side of Mankulam-Mullathivu road [A34]. And this sandwich model is one failure point of Jaya Sikuruyi.

Secondly there is no cover for the stretch between Vavunia and Padaviya. If the pussycats are well prepared, then they might first attack that line in order to unsettle the operations before taking TF3 on A34.

At the time of Madhu I stated [not in this blog] that the tiger heartland is the surrounding of Oddusudan. That is because most of machinary seem to be around that region. This is a walk right thru. It will bring their do-or-die sooner. Note that they are almost as strong as they were at the beginning of Wanni battles as far as their numbers [strong cadres]are concerned. The prime plan of saving them at the cost of land was to use them at a more important battle.

Being a k/b warrior, my concerns are subjected to the realities of the battlefield. I am sure SF does a good study on enemy strength before attacking. Also I am not only faithful but also amused about the brain power of our commander [specially after the "kade" journey he sent pussycats by putting pressure on Kilinochchi]. Tigers may have abandoned the Puliyankulama-nedunkerni region where there was not much happening. Or there may be hunters prowling for the best harvest in case tigers charge at the dangling carrot of Vavunia-Padaviya.

Fingers crossed, I'm hoping for the best, wishing that our life and soul brothers will reach Oddusudan safely.

reports indicate that the SLA has suffered another humiliating blow in muhamalai....there has been the use of a "new" weapon that the SLA did not expect, alot of the sla bodies returning are with extreme burns and no shrapnel or bullet wounds....this is just the begginning modhayas, pooneryn won't be in ur hands for long, the ltte is ready for a massive counter attack which will include new tactics, weapons and maneuvers that was not expected by ur top brass.

Defencewire said...

sujeewa,

Oddusudan is Mulaitivu's GTI (Ground of Tactical Importance). Don't be too hasty in ruling out TF-3 as acting on their own. Just below them is TF-2 operating from Kanakarayankulam. Besides, once Paranthan and Kilinochchi falls, 57 will also turn eastwards on TF-3's northern flank. On the 57's northern flank will be the 58 and perhaps even the 53.

In our opinion Commander has used TF-3 as the first division to turn from the western flank to the eastern flank thus opening up the first mobility corridor and avenues of approach towards Mullaitivu but it will not be along and soon will be joined by others. Let's wait and see shall we?

Annonymous said...

And thanks a lot for your comments on educating the civilian tamil forces. Sadly that is not happening right?

Seeing many diff ideas by all here on the final solution, I came up with the following.

No conflict can be solved with all parties forgetting their ideologies. We can tell them to forget eelam, but they have committed their own bro/sis for it. So they will never loose the ideology.

However the realization of ground truth should make them inactive. At the first stage we have to make sure they KNOW that eelam is a lost course regardless they support it or not. JVP ideologies of south were brought to control this way.

After realizing that their dreams will never be, the individuals will take diff paths, some leave politics, some flourish in cunning politics and corruption, some keep on preaching the lost agenda in a peaceful manner whereas some become NGO hookers like Sunanda Deshapriya. Noteworthy is the fact that they will have internal conflicts within these divisions.

It is NOT about purely convincing them about Sri Lankan ness, but convincing them that their tamil superiority is hard beaten. Keep you head down and live or you're shot. That is how a conflict can be brought to stop.

Don't worry the next generation will be "normal".

And within this space we should always preserve the Tamil right for self annihilation. Free white vans provided.

DefenceWire,

Can you please record outstanding action in the recent operations similar to SF landing in Vakare? During the eastern operations, it was very dramatic to see how Captain Vijitha Alexander held the Kattaiparichchan camp against 500 teras with very minimal casualties. Once again in Vakarei, how an officer broke the deadlock by attacking a vital LTTE bunker but gave his life. These were the moments that turned the tide of the war. I am pretty sure that we had enough stories like these in the current battles. However, they seem to be going unpublished. Then of course a plenty of LRRP missions. Even though they are not significant from the viewpoint of overall operations, such ops are very important in historical point of view. Future generation of our country need heroes and heroic action to exemplify the sacrifices made by the current generations, just in the way we read chronicles today. If somebody doesn't document them today, they will be gone forever. Please record such heroic action in your blog whenever you get a chance.

Folks,

Lot of people say LTTP is retreating or withdrawing tactically to fight back with a major attack in place of their choice.

I don't buy this due to followings:

1. 59 is fighting ferociously and only inching forward.

2. 57 is also similar to 59.

3. TF2 also fighting hard with little gain.

I think LTTP is trying their best to turn tables big way in these fronts. However, our boys are holding and killing them in good numbers. While 58 is very successful in harvesting and gain teritory also.

So, logical deduction is LTTP is trying their best but the best is not good enough with the SLA.

LTTP is backbone seems to be fractured, demoralised and confused.

I think within next few weeks we will see the begining of the inevitable end of military arm of the LTTP.

It seems, LTTP is trying to protect senior and elite members by sending them to east, south of Mavil Aru. They can do it while child soldiers and junior members are hoding and delaying SLA progress.

If managed to relocate majority of senior cadres to the bush area from Mavil Aru to Yala, we will be in trouble again despite of winning military battles at present FDLs.

This is the only way they can survive to fight another day.

SLN should guard sea routes to the east while SLA should guard land tracks from Mulative jungles.

LTTE Heavily Involved In Fund Raising For Hilary Clinton In New Jersey

"(Guardian Unlimited) Yeah. Do you think that the terrorists hate us for our freedoms, or do you think they have specific geopolitical objectives?

(Hillary Clinton) Well, I believe that terrorism is a tool that has been utilized throughout history to achieve certain objectives. Some have been ideological, others territorial. There are personality-driven terroristic objectives. The bottom line is, you can't lump all terrorists together. And I think we've got to do a much better job of clarifying what are the motivations, the raisons d'être of terrorists. I mean, what the Tamil Tigers are fighting for in Sri Lanka, or the Basque separatists in Spain, or the insurgents in al-Anbar province may only be connected by tactics. They may not share all that much in terms of what is the philosophical or ideological underpinning. And I think one of our mistakes has been painting with such a broad brush, which has not been particularly helpful in understanding what it is we were up against when it comes to those who pursue terrorism for whichever ends they're seeking."

"Yes, we can" Vaiko tells Obama

I mean Obama plus Hillary is too good for the LTTE equals to independence like Kosovo. I do not know whether that Prabha will declare independence now in the speech or by the time BJP comes to power.

UPA regime against Sri Lankan Tamils’ interests: BJP

http://www.hindu.com/2008/09/18/stories/2008091854460400.htm
On two Indians suffering injuries in the recent attack by the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam in Sri Lanka, the BJP president said he wanted the Centre to spell out its policy clearly on the island nation’s ethnic question. Expression of solidarity in support of the demand for legitimate rights of Tamils was different from supporting the LTTE. When Sri Lanka had no enemies and it was given arms and ammunition, there was every possibility of the weapons being used against innocent Tamils under the garb of attacking the LTTE.

Quite sad that after losing poneryn is such an adrous fashion its taken over without much life loss this time for the occupant. I mean losing 1000 soldiers and getting its back like this is an anti climax. Any idea whether the army will finally accept the MIA are actually dead.

Anyway lets just wait and see.

I guess what the BJP cannot do is openly declare support. Hence it will give the US the blessing for an indepence decleration in private and in public say we are disappointed with the US support, however it may be the only way to solve their greviances blah blah blah.

In the state level, the BJP will go round telling that they are protecting hindus from prosecution and good example is the break up of a hindu portion of sri lanka.

I guess pakistan got 7.5 billion. Ask them whether the collapsed tea produces can be traded for weapons. I guess its a land grab for Sri Lanka. I do not see how mahindha mama will keep sri lanka afloat. Anyway loot as long as possible.

Pro-Tamil Tiger Views
Thackeray has admitted that he is pro-Tamil Tiger. He says, "I am proud of the Tigers for the gallant manner in which they are fighting."[27]

He also wanted a ban on the LTTE lifted by the center-wing government.[28]

Writers Pi. Ci Kaṇēcan̲ and P.C. Ganesan write, "The LTTE may not be a communal outfit but it derives a lot of support from the Hindu Diaspora living in different countries. That is the reason why even the Shiv Sena Chief Bal Thackeray came out openly in support of the LTTE."

The BJP-Shiv Sena combine won the 1995 Maharashtra State Assembly elections and came to power. During the tenure of the government from 1995 to 1999, Bal Thackeray was nicknamed "remote control" since he played a major role in government policies and decisions from behind-the-scenes.

"On the same issue, LTTP success here and there time to time is due to several factors including CFA.

1. Use CFA to develop their network in south and gather intelligance.
"

We also used the CFA to gather intelligence on the LTTE's support network, taking pictures of people participating in Pongu Thamil etc. Why do you think the white vans got so busy after Mahinda won the election?

"2. Use CFA to procure arms and solidify defences, bunkers, trenchs and earth bunds."

We spent most of the CFA under Chandrika and Ranil dithering, but from Nov 05 to July 06 Gota and Fonseka were very busy procuring arms and getting the SLA ready for war.

"5. RAW trained them, provided with arms, explosives and money for more than 20 years."

RAW provided help in the 1980s but that all ended when Rajiv Gandhi was killed.

"6. T'naadu covertly supplying them money, shelter, arms, expolosives and logistics todate."

Again this ended after Rajiv Gandhi assassination. Jayalalitha as CM was very anti-LTTE and cracked down hard against them. That is why the LTTE hates her.

Wijayapala,

GOSL or SLDF do not need CFA to procure arms, gather intelligence or to solidify defences. We can do those under any circumstances.

RAW helped them after even Rajiv's death, may be ex RAW guys. Some ex RAW officers help them even today.

T,naadu state govt also helping them covertly with money, material, logistics and providing safe heaven for their activities.

In short CFA always help LTTP to achieve its goal.

Therefore, we are opposing to CFA, our support is to eliminate armed struggle completely with its leadership. Untill it is done tamil community will suffer from both sides. From SLDF it is only minor harresments due to tightened security but from LTTP its child recuitmet, recruitment by force, abuse of civilians, heavy taxes and discriminatory treatment for civilians while LTTE members enjoying everything they got.

Even rice 1kg/person, provided by GOSL freely, LTTE members get 1.7kg while civilians get 300g.

Therfore, if think of liberating ordinry SL tamils, help us to eliminate tigers and the leadership.

Anything else is only a lip service to help the terror group.

"The stability depends on how you structure it, and the cost can be offset by utilizing that force in peace time as an economic resource, and endowing the defense establishment with military R&D and training capabilities to generate income to support its own cost."

How will we be able to generate income from a large army???

"Ultimately, its a value judgment: the actual cost Sri Lanka has incurred to date by being defenceless with a small largely ceremonial army, far exceeds any cost we would have borne in maintaining an adequate force to defend our country."

Not necessarily. Our post-independence leaders neglected the military for 2 reasons: 1) high cost of a standing army and 2) the very real danger of military coup, as demonstrated by Pakistan, Bangladesh, Burma, and our very own failed 1962 coup. We spent the money that would've gone to a large military towards getting the best health care and education in S. Asia.

Perhaps a better way to phrase it would be, "the actual cost Sri Lanka has incurred to date by murdering 3000 Tamils in 1983, far exceeds any cost we would have borne in avoiding communal violence."

The flawed assumption is that India is our enemy and must be defended against. India did not intervene in our internal matters until Black July, and will probably not intervene again unless we do something equally stupid and self-destructive.

"What I am proposing, in effect, is not merely a standalone professional defence force, but one that is intimately integrated into a peoples defence force consisting of the SLDA and a National Guard reserve force."

The idea is good on paper, but the reality is that you cannot have a professional military force which is simultaneously a "people's force." You can have one or the other, but the military cannot be both. Perhaps I did not understand your idea.

"The important thing here is to recognize that the top of the list is populated by small countries threatened by larger enemies or by countries with more advanced military technology."

Some of the countries (N. Korea, Syria) are not even democratic. Others like Greece and S. Korea have had authoritarian histories. Syria and Cambodia have generally failed to keep their borders secure despite their large standing forces.

Israel is not comparable to Sri Lanka. Israel had fought at least 3 major wars with its neighbors from its very inception; that is how it is able to field a conscripted force. Taiwan also has a history of conflict with China, that is not comparable to whatever beef we had in the past with India. Any leader who tries to introduce conscription into Sri Lanka on the other hand will be out of power in a second.

"The threat Sri Lanka faces from Tamil Nadu is a permanent one that will not diminish in time. With its 60 million and growing population, Tamil Nadu's influence in India will always trump ours, and even India's own self interest."

If that was true, India would not have ceded Katchathivu to us in 1974, when we still had just a small ceremonial army.

"Sri Lanka need not remain a defenceless pawn in this game; through military strength we can make the option of intervening in Sri Lanka, untenable, nonviable, impossible."

Again I have to respectfully ask the question: at what cost???

The first thing to observe is that Israel is a nation formed from immigrants who were mostly unwelcome in their land of origin. Therefore unlike us, the Israelis had a strong reason to support a conscripted force. As immigrants, the Israelis did not have the same problems with land reform/tenure as we do- many of them were poor but the political system was not built upon patronage as ours is. It was basically a society of Western colonists bringing Western education/standards to bear.

Israel didn't have much of a defense industry until it received billions of free $$ from the US.

I found the link to David Blacker's ideas of SL military force structure. His ideas are pretty close to mine regarding improving the SLN & SLAF and downsizing the SLA after the end of the LTTE:

http://defencenet.blogspot.com/2007/07/ltte-multi-barrel-rocket-launcher.html

Oshada, I agree that the SLAF & SLN need to be beefed up to face foreign threats as well as preventing support for domestic threats. However, I disagree with you about the propportion of special ops troops to conventional ones in the Army. Even now, our SF component is disproportionately large for our forces (5-6 operational battalions + SBS & STF), where a country like the UK has two operational battalion-sized units (SAS & SBS) and one reserve. The problem is that our SF handles certain roles that should be conventional, such as the amphibious assault and airborne roles. We should have dedicated marine and airmobile units. The SF should only be used for very specialist roles like hostage-rescue and guerrilla/recce ops.

I'm not really a fan of national service. I'd give it a definite thumbs-down in wartime, but think it doesn't matter in peacetime. Most countries that have it, like Switzerland and Germany, have a long tradition of military service, and it's more traditional than a necessity. I've spoken to several Germans who've gone through national service, and most of them thought it was useless. And unlike Israel we're not likely to facce a sudden overwhelming attack that would neccesitate the mobilization of huge reserves.

I agree that in wartime, most elite SL youth would escape the draft (as they did in the US), and also, having unwilling troops in the ranks only weakens the Army. Good examples are the US in Vietnam and the USSR in Afghanistan and Chechnya.

Sam, Switzerland is an incredibly wealthy nation, and well able to afford that sort of a system. As you said, hardware's expensive, and if you want a resevoir of 500,000 troops on call, you need to have the weapons ready for them to use. Switzerland produces its own firearms so that's not a prob for them. Also, that sort of a reserve needs regular training, which also costs money.

A typical peacetime SL Army would be about 50-60,000 regulars with maybe that much again in reserve. That would be realistic.

Yep, the war for seperation (not seperatism) started after 83, I mean, in that scale. (LTTE killed 13 troops well before the 'black July' and LTTE and other groups have already started military struggle before the black July. Black July just helped LTTE to expand easily their already started project.

Seperatism started probably 100-200 years ago, first in the minds of higher ranked, higher caste, higher educated tamils minds. Some even requested from british not to give independence unless they seperate NE. This is well before the war or 83. You should know better than me - history.

I agree 120% with David Blacker he knows best since he had served in the army and Ananda from USA. Sri Lanka needs a sizable army to face the Tamil Nadu threat, insurgents threat, seperatists, kallathoni threat from time to time.

All youngsters should be trained for combat to have a 4,000,000 army that can be called upon if and when needed. Only cowards LTTE sakkiliyas like Wijaya-Hapala are scared when Sri Lanka has a goodsize army.

#### THALATHEL RATHRI ####

This is an important day in the de-facto state of peelam. It is to commemorate the day on which tiger supremo consumed the deadly sambaru to save the Peelam from destruction. The mother Madivadini worshipped tiger supremo with great devotion and the Lord Thaleivar by sticking his dick blessed Her. She asked for the benefit of all the zakkiliyas that in future whoever worships the Lord Thaleivar the Thalathel rathri day with devotion, they should also be blessed and should be given the ultimate liberation and it was granted by the supremo with many - many suicide belts.

When Bhanu and Pottu fought between themselves as "who has the balls", Lord Thaleivar appeared before them as the largest dick, they have ever seen. They were not able to find the origin or the end of that dick. This day is called Thalathel day. Bhanu and Pottu repented for their mistake and prayed to Lord Thaleivar for forgiving their sin worshiping the supremo lingum which was the form of the dick. In the night of Thalathel day Thaleivar appeared before them and blessed them with C4 explosives. Devotees pray the Sun God throughout the night of Thalathel rathri firing T56 and throwing hand grenades into the sky.

Every month, second monday is called maha Thalathel rathri. The one that comes in the month November is called Maha Thaleivar rathri.

The annual Thaleivar rathri festival held on the banks of Akkarayankulam at Kilinochchi is one of the most colourful and noisy local festivals of Peelam. The pilgrims keep awake the whole night firing mortars and return home next morning after performing fake suicide explosions.

This year anuual Thalathel rathri will not be held instead Lord Thaleivar will consume another dose of deadly sambaru to save the shrinking peelam from annihilation.

My question is this: How will you react if Mahinda declares a ceasefire (not necessarily an agreement with the LTTE) around January, after Kilinochchi is taken? Would you accuse him, Gota or SF of being a traitor?

The LTTE would try to rebuild itself but the SLA would be in a better position, having pinned the LTTE in the Mullaitivu jungles (with the hundreds of thousands of civilians agitating to be freed from the jungles).

On the other hand, Gota and Fonseka might think it's best to keep up the pressure, and I would say more power to them. They have info that we don't.

"Yep, the war for seperation (not seperatism) started after 83, I mean, in that scale. (LTTE killed 13 troops well before the 'black July' and LTTE and other groups have already started military struggle before the black July. Black July just helped LTTE to expand easily their already started project."

The LTTE only had 30 members (and about 9 full-timers) before Black July. It didn't have much of a "project" back then and there's no way it could have seriously waged a war against the Sri Lankan state. Likewise "separatism" did not have a strong enough calling to mobilize Tamil youth to arms.

It is unfortunate that Arse-ithri (I don't see why he refers to me as "Arsehole" since his own mother saw fit to name him as such when she saw him after birth) doesn't have a sense of history to understand the beginning of the war. Regardless of what his UK Tamil friends believed, their cause could not have had a serious beginning until Black July took place (in the early 1980s, when the Arse claimed to be in school).

"Seperatism started probably 100-200 years ago, first in the minds of higher ranked, higher caste, higher educated tamils minds. Some even requested from british not to give independence unless they seperate NE. This is well before the war or 83. You should know better than me - history."

This is not true- the notion of "Tamil homeland" did not really exist in the minds of Tamils until 1956. Chelva started his Tamil homeland party in 1949 but nobody voted for him.

Out of the question, Wijayapala. It isn't going to happen. There is no 'if' here. You may not understand this. The wavelength Gota, Army Commander and the President operates with is as same as an average Sri Lankan (the better term would be Sinhalese. No racism intended) operates with. These are not complex characters. They are simple people who had set their minds on achieving a single target i.e. defeating this terrorism menace. They are not going to waver.
How do I know this? Because I am an average Sinhalese. Both above mentioned people and I myself resonate at the same frequency. Due to this reason I know that there is not going to be any 'if's. I understand why you think there may be some 'if's. But I am not angry at you for that.

From 27 November 1982, when the first LTTE fighter Lt.Sanker was killed, until 20 November 2006, a total of 18,742 fighters have died, all of whom have been declared War Heroes by the LTTE. 818 LTTE fighters, 568 men and 250 women fighters of the LTTE, have been killed in a largely defensive war faced by the Tigers in 2006. The list also includes members of Eelam Revolutionary Organization of Students (EROS) and selected members of other organisations."

Wijeyapala, you are defining what is the start of the war to suit your own theories. Whether you look at political manoeuvrings or the first attack on Sri Lankan army, the war was initiated well before Black July. To say that separatism was never the motive is laughable.

As for Anagarika Dharmapala, his main contribution to independence was the revival of Buddhism and Sinhala nationalism (in a good way). He created the foundations to create leaders to fight for independence and to rule after independence. There are enough sources to find out more about him - you tell me how he was a happy servant of the Empire, as you put it.

["Tamil homeland" did not really exist in the minds of Tamils until 1956]

Another apology for Tamil racists’ violence from WesaBalla!

Typical of an undercover Tamil racist whore-bitch!

This whore-bitch is trying to say the “Tamil homeland” only came into being after 1956!!!

Here is a brief excerpt from writings by eminent Prof. Nalin de Silva that amply clarifies that Tamil racism and the grand design for a “Tamil homeland” very well pre-existed 1956:

[(February 01, Colombo, Sri Lanka Guardian) Tamil racism in Sri Lanka has entered the fourth phase with the formation of the so called Tamil National Alliance (TNA). As we said last week in these columns the Tamil Hindu Vellala leadership of Tamil racism is no more and now we have the phenomenon of Tamil Christian (Catholic) Karaivar leadership of LTTE, the sole representative of the Tamils as declared by the TNA. The TNA has only one policy in effect. Do what the LTTE tells them.

The first phase of Tamil racism baptised by the British, commenced in 1833 with the appointment of one representative each to represent the Sinhalas, Tamils and Burghers. With that the British equated more than two thousand three hundred years of Sinhala history with a continuous history of Tamils in Sri Lanka that did not extend for more than two hundred years. They also equated more than seventy five percent of the population of Sinhala people with less than ten percent of Tamils.

They had no regard for the unique culture that the Sinhalas had created in this country over a period of more than two thousand three hundred years and as far as they were concerned, that culture did not have a weightage more than that was given to Tamil culture that was nothing but a continuation of Tamil culture in the Malabar coast from where the Dutch imported Tamils for their tobacco cultivation. The first phase of Tamil racism in Sri Lanka lasted till about 1947. The Tamil leadership was Tamil Hindu Vellala and they tried to manipulate at that centre (Legislative Assembly until 1931 and then the State Council) and have political power over the entire country. The Tamil racist leadership wanted more representation for them than for the Sinhalas at the centre and in this they were assisted by the British.

Three infamous incidents out of many during this period were the demanding of a Tamil representative for the western province by Mr. Ponnambalam Arunachalam and the others in 1917, the opposition to universal franchise by Mr. Ponnambalam Ramanathan and the others around 1929, and the demanding of fifty fifty representation by Mr. GG Ponnambalam in the forties. Universal franchise was opposed by Tamil racist leadership as it would have given more representation to the Sinhala people in the state council. During this period the Tamil racists coined the concept of a Tamil nation with a history of more than three thousand years in Sri Lanka. In this exercise as well, they were assisted by the British and were influenced by the mythical history as given in Yalpanam Vaipava Malai written by a Tamil poet who had been "commissioned" by the Dutch. While the Tamil Hindu Vellala leadership in Colombo was fighting against the Sinhalas to deprive Sinhalathva its rightful place in the country, in Jaffna the Vellalas maintained the repressive regime against the less privileged casts.]

Need I say more?

Nice try Tamil racist WesaBalls…go Balla go...your Tamil racist whore-mother is waiting for your "mount"...!!!

Another shameful lie from that article

"Since 2004, belt tightening has been craftily imposed on every one other than the state sector through 20 percent plus inflation and high interest rates, while the state sector got fat salary hikes, dirt cheap housing loans and tax free cars and subsidies to prop-up red bottom lines.

But now history is repeating itself. A severe balance of payments crisis is underway, the central bank is intervening and injecting liquidity in a self-destructing sterilized intervention cycle and the country is hemorrhaging reserves."

Lies, Lies, Lies, WE NEED ECONMICWIRE OR ECONMICNET to tell the truth and be unbaised.

Over the past two months Sri Lanka has spent 99 billion rupees (900 million dollars) to make up for foreign reserves spent to defend its peg in a deadly sterilized intervention cycle.

The rupee was also 'devalued' from 108 to 110, but currency defence is continuing.

I mean 900 million dollars equal to 2 sets of mig orders. Lies again. You mean after selling this bullshit about the migs now within 2 months these guys have blown off twice the money.

Unknown said...

Another lie from the same article

By printing and driving up inflation through part of the year when budget cashflows got hit, and tightening policy and borrowing abroad to hold the exchange rate at other times, the central bank has steadily 'overvalued' the currency.

It even partially closed its discount window, bringing the country close to a currency board. Last month the central bank slapped import trade controls, instead of curing the real problem, which was liquidity injections to offset a cash crunch caused by currency defence.

The worst trade controls in the island were imposed during the 1970s, when massive central bank money printing forced exchange and import controls and led to an 'import substitution' economy.

From WIKI

The 1971 uprising led by the Sinhalese Sri Lankan People's Liberation Front, or Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna, was an unsuccessful Marxist youth rebellion that claimed 15,000 youth lives. Another from wiki which said this:

Initially identified simply as the New Left, this group drew on students and unemployed youths from rural areas, most of them in the sixteen-to-twenty-five-age- group. Many of these new recruits were members of lower castes (Karava and Durava) who felt that their economic interests had been neglected by the nation's leftist coalitions. The standard program of indoctrination, the so-called Five Lectures, included discussions of Indian imperialism, the growing economic crisis, the failure of the island's communist and socialist parties, and the need for a sudden, violent seizure of power.

WHEN I WAS READING THE FIRST PART AND HAD WORDS LIKE TEENS, KARAVAS, I THOUGHT THEY WERE TALKING OF THE LTTE!

Unknown said...

Indian army, killing teenagers(of course non were innocent), all were killed by brave Sri Lankan Soldiers. We must lodge a complain to wiki. The author is writting the beginings of the LTTE problem and makes it should like the JVP uprising. I know prabha the karava probabily part of the JVP and LTTE is JVP uprising 3!!!

"Although there had been some warning that an attack was imminent, Bandaranaike was caught off guard by the scale of the uprising and was forced to call on India to provide basic security functions. Indian frigates patrolled the coast and Indian troops guarded Bandaranaike International Airport at Katunayaka while Indian Air Force helicopters assisted the counteroffensive.

After two weeks of fighting, the government regained control of all but a few remote areas. In both human and political terms, the cost of the victory was high: an estimated 15,000 insurgents[citation needed]- -many of them in their teens--died in the conflict, and the army was widely perceived to have used excessive force."

Ananda-USA said...

Wijeyapala,

Thank you very much for raising these important questions. My replies follow.

Ananda-USA:"The stability depends on how you structure it, and the cost can be offset by utilizing that force in peace time as an
economic resource, and endowing the defense establishment with military R&D and training capabilities to generate income to support its own cost."

Wijeypala: How will we be able to generate income from a large army???

Ananda-USA: I said "costs can be offset" using the defense forces to provide services needed for national development during peacetime; but the costs will not be completely eliminated. In a later paragraph I listed some of these services.

For example, the Army Corps of Engineers can build the new high-speed expressways, including bridges, that SL sorely needs for economic development. They can also undertake the development of reservoirs and dams for power generation, flood control and water conservation. They can build the airports, shipping ports, and in collaboration with the navy, offshore windpower and ocean wavepower generation plants.

Today, many construction activities are being awarded in SL to for-profit foreign firms on a build, operate and transfer basis; our forces can provide much of the labor and management services and acquire dual-use equipment purchased for these projects.

The Navy can use its facilities and ships to train our people for jobs as seamen and officers in a Merchant Marine...to make Sri Lanka into major presence in shipping...as the small nation of Greece is today. The Navy can lead the way for us to exploit our strategic location in the Indian Ocean to transform Sri Lanka into the preferred location for repairing, refitting and building ships...work that countries like South Korea are giving up and is going to Vietnam and China today. Trincomalee is ideal for large scale ship building, there is a large Graving Dock there.

The Airforce can help train civilian pilots, foreign and Sri Lankan, both for short-hauls and long-haul international flights. All of three branches of the armed forces can develop training schools for the electricians, mechanics, welders, and IT personnel such as networking technicians, computer programmers, computer technicians etc. A military university-level technical college can be set up for higher level technical traning in each area in addition to the purely-military training offered by officer training schools.

During the last 35 years, for better or worse, Sri Lanka has gained much experience in fighting an insurgency of the worst kind. Terrorism is now a commonplace cottage industry in the world; we can offer training to the armed forces of other friendly nations in need of training.

A military R&D research establishment, utilizing young and older talent both within Sri Lanka and from the Sri Lankan diaspora can be used, like Israel, to develop weapons suited to our needs, so that SL would not have to rely on other countries for weapons or ammunition to defend itself. While we must have our own capability to develop small arms ammunition, RPG rockets etc locally, we must initially select higher-value weapons systems for development that are too costly to buy, but are within our abilities to build, and are profitable to sell to other countries. The Arrow fast attack boats and the heavy armored personnel carriers locally built by the Navy and the Army,
respectively, are good examples.
But there are many other weapons systems, mechanical and electrical, software and hardware,
exploiting the latest developments in solid-state electronics, robotics, sensors, communications and materials that would fall
within the envelope of feasibility for us.

Finally, there are many highly qualified scientists, engineers, medical doctors, and
others, some with specialized state-of-the-art defense industry knowledge, who given the opportunity, would love to help the motherland without remuneration.

Ananda-USA:"Ultimately, its a value judgment: the actual cost Sri Lanka has incurred to date by being defenceless with a small
largely ceremonial army, far exceeds any cost we would have borne in maintaining an adequate force to defend our country."

Wijeyapala: Not necessarily. Our post-independence leaders neglected the military for 2 reasons: 1) high cost of a standing army and 2) the very real danger of military coup, as demonstrated by Pakistan, Bangladesh, Burma, and our very own failed 1962 coup. We
spent the money that would've gone to a large military towards getting the best health care and education in S. Asia.

Perhaps a better way to phrase it would be, "the actual cost Sri Lanka has incurred to date by murdering 3000 Tamils in 1983, far
exceeds any cost we would have borne in avoiding communal violence."

The flawed assumption is that India is our enemy and must be defended against. India did not intervene in our internal matters until Black July, and will probably not intervene again unless we do something equally stupid and self-destructive.

Annanda-USA: I agree with you that the funds we saved from military expenditures were well spent on educating and uplifting our
people, compared, for example, to India which gained independence at the same time.

The prevention of a military coup was never a concious consideration of any SL government. In any case, if the regular force is much smaller than the National Guard, as I propose, it is very unlikely that a coup-de-etat would be attempted. By the way, this is the reason for the constitutional right for people to own and bear arms in the US. A weel armed population was considered to be a deterrent to abuse by an armed government.

At independence our relations with India were so good that we did not feel, quite foolishly in retrospect, that we had any external enemies; so we didn't prepare for it. If we had paid any attention to our own history of repeated invasions from South India, we would have done otherwise.

It was the military weakness of Sri Lanka, the presence of a large Tamil population across the Palk strait, that encouraged the aggression against Sri Lanka, and the decisions by the Indira Gandhi govt (continued initially by Rajiv Gandhi also) to arm, train and support insurgents in Sri Lanka to divert Sri Lanka away from the western capitalist world back under India's socialist thumb sealed it.

You point to the riots of 1983 at the spark that triggered the conflict, but we all know that the insurgents were being trained and deposited on our soil by India itself well before that, and that it took about 4-years of killings and hit-and-run raids before 1983 for the pot to boil over in 1983. The provocation was delibrately designed to evoke the violent response it did in 1983. In the 35 years since, we have not seen a similar event. I can assure you that in India it would not have taken so long for retaliation to begin, as evidenced by the daily violence we see all over
India now on much less provocation. No segment of the Indian population would have tolerated the violence inflicted on us in SL since then.

I strongly disagree with you that it was only the "Black July" riots in 1983 that precipitated Indian intervention to partition our
country. Black July was precipitated deliberately by the Indian government to control Sri Lanka by engineering a situation that would allow it to intervene. The Tamil issue was just a convenient lever to use. Unfortunately, for India, neither Indira Gandhi nor Rajiv Gandhi initially, recognized the Greater Dravidian Nation agenda of their tool, the LTTE, and that the terorism would come home to roost all over India...but that is another fascinating story.

Indeed, India is not permanently our enemy, but as I said, we have little leverage with India in controlling Tamil Nadu or acting on perceptions to its security, however flawed that might be. We cannot depend on "good neighborliness" to assure our safety; we must prepare for the worst and hope for the best.

I am not willing to gamble the lives of our people, and the integrity of our country, on a potentially flawed assumption that
India will always be our friend. India is shortsighted as we have seen to date: it will do what is most expedient for itself at any
given time, and we will pay the price. Our enduring friendship for India as the fount of our Culture, Language and Reliogion may not be reciprocated.

I stand by my statement that the cost of not paying attention to our defense needs has exceeded the cost of maintaining a good
defense. The two decades that followed WW-II, most countries colonized by Europeans achieved independence. In the subsequent 30
years, few countries made as much headway as Sri Lanka towards social equity as literacy, the essential preconditions for economic growth. For example, I remember how backward Malaysia was then compared to Sri Lanka, yet Malaysia is now far ahead of us in
economic development. I believe that we were poised on the threshold of transforming Sri Lanka into an economic powerhouse like the so called "litte tigers": Singapore, Hong Kong, Taiwan and South Korea. In addition to the lives lost, the failure to achieve that status is the true cost of the conflict in Sri Lanka. Instead, our literate educated people are forced into jobs as maids and servants in other countries to be abused and
humiliated.

To me, the prize at the end of the tunnel in winning this war is getting back on track towards creating a peaceful country in which all of our people can live in dignity in their native land. Given the internal and external threats we face, we have to maintain a very strong defense force to defend our country against external and internal enemies.

Ananda-USA:"What I am proposing, in effect, is not merely a standalone professional defence force, but one that is intimately
integrated into a peoples defence force consisting of the SLDA and a National Guard reserve force."

Wijeyapala: The idea is good on paper, but the reality is that you cannot have a professional military force which is simultaneously a "people's force." You can have one or the other, but the military cannot be both. Perhaps I did not understand your idea.

Ananda-USA: I mean a large regular force (500,000 strong) that forms the core, and a much larger reserve National Guard force,
essentially every adult (male and female) that can bear arms. The National Guard will be trained for a short-period every year in
rotation by the regular force, to serve in battle-field units or in supporting units, according to their ages, physical abilities
and skill-levels. The National Guard will be affiliated to the various units of the regular force, and can be called up for service as needed. This is largely, for example, how the Israeli Defence Force is structured. The idea is not only good on paper, but works in practice in many countries I have identified...this is the only way in which the preponderant military threat posed by larger potential enemies can be checkmated.

Ananda-USA:"The important thing here is to recognize that the top of the list is populated by small countries threatened by larger
enemies or by countries with more advanced military technology."

Wijeypala: Some of the countries (N. Korea, Syria) are not even democratic. Others like Greece and S. Korea have had authoritarian
histories. Syria and Cambodia have generally failed to keep their borders secure despite their large standing forces.

Israel is not comparable to Sri Lanka. Israel had fought at least 3 major wars with its neighbors from its very inception; that is
how it is able to field a conscripted force. Taiwan also has a history of conflict with China, that is not comparable to whatever
beef we had in the past with India. Any leader who tries to introduce conscription into Sri Lanka on the other hand will be out of power in a second.

Ananda-USA: Whether a country is democratic, has an authoritarian history, or has succeeded in maintaining security, are irrelevant to the perception by its leaders (acting on behalf of that country) of the threats they face. The only relevant issue here is that they do perceive a certain threat level, and have chosen the sizes of their military establishments accordingly to meet the perceived threat. That is all that I am trying to show in Table 2. How successful they have been in maintaining security, given
their systems of government, and the state of their external relations, etc are additional issues for us consider at the next
decision level. Some of these countries are certainly not good models for us to emulate, but others are. None of these countries exactly match Sri Lanka's situation, but they all share a high threat level, as we do.

Regarding the comparative willingness of Israelis and Sri Lankans to endure conscription, I strongly disagree with you. People of Sri Lanka are crying for leadership on a means of ensuring stability in their lives, and security for their children, and generations yet unborn, without having these issues to be debated only after the horse is stolen. Do we have to fall in the same hole again and again before we learn to avoid it? Look at the Swiss: there is no threat existing on their borders, and they have not been involved in either of the two world wars; yet every Swiss adult is prepared and organized to fight. Adequate organization and preparedness is the difference between countries that survive and countries that die.

Ananda-USA: "The threat Sri Lanka faces from Tamil Nadu is a permanent one that will not diminish in time. With its 60 million and growing population, Tamil Nadu's influence in India will always trump ours, and even India's own self interest."

Wijepala: If that was true, India would not have ceded Katchathivu to us in 1974, when we still had just a small ceremonial army.

Ananda-USA: In 1974, Indian policy had not yet shifted against Sri Lanka. That happened later as a result of Sri Lanka moving
away from socialist policies towards a more free-market economy oriented towards the West. Sri Lankans were tired of the socialist policies, initially beneficial to the masses, that created shortages, unemployment, low growth and unrest in the country. This was viewed by socialist leaning India, aligned with Russia, as inimical to its security. This change in policy began under Indira Gandhi, and continued under Rajiv Gandhi, until after the Indian intervention when Rajiv
recognized the threat posed to the integrity of India by the LTTE's Greater Dravidian Nation agenda. If he had been re-elected, he would have moved forcefully against the LTTE; his assisination forestalled that.

Recall also that India had few, if any, terrorist movements within India then, and never thought their LTTE client would assist terrorist groups in India, and attempt to bring down the Indian Federation as well. The subsequent growth of terrorism and civil discord in India that we see now, was catalyzed, in part, by the LTTE.

Ananda-USA:"Sri Lanka need not remain a defenceless pawn in this game; through military strength we can make the option of intervening in Sri Lanka, untenable, nonviable, impossible."

Wijepala: Again I have to respectfully ask the question: at what cost???

Ananda-USA: What is our nation's integrity and our people's lives worth to you? As you know, the actual number of Sri Lankan citizens who have died in this conflict, often blown to bits by the LTTE, greatly exceeds 100,000. We have come within a hair-breadth of a divided country. By the grace of the Holy Triple Gem, we finally have a few courageous leaders willing to fight with the will and determination required to save the
nation.

Instead of remaining to develop our own country, many of our people have fled overseas and are afraid to return until there is some assurance of future stability. In short, the kind of defence establishment I propose is both necessary and feasible, and we have no other option.

Unfortunately, "if you desire peace, prepare for war" remains a truism in this dangerous world.
