53 and 58 to meet-up as LTTE ban comes into effect

The Sri Lanka Armed Forces have been told that the LTTE will be banned, according to a decision made at today's Cabinet Meeting. Exact details will be made available later.

Meanwhile the 58 and 53 Divisions are expected to meet up shortly as Pallai starts being vacated by the LTTE. Only a weak frontline remains at Palai presently, which will be overcome shortly. The 55 Division also marched south at Nagarkovil without any resistance. LTTE seems to have vacated these areas via the sea.

The Army is also expecting a large exodus of civilians, over 100,000 to start moving out of Puthukudiirippu- Vishwamadu areas. They expect to take charge of these civilians at Kilinochchi. The idea is to channel them to safety along the A-34.

a simple one, are you happy that he was assasinated? Yes/No?

LW was a filthy bastard who would sell his Mother if the price is right.

I would never ever mourn for a miserable accursed creature like LW

That said, you just can't kill an unarmed person in broad day light, filthy bastard or not! So the answer is "NO"

Personally I think there something very sinister behind the spate of attacks on media within a matter of days, especially at a time when the country is celebrating its military achievements. In fairness to the Govt, they had ABSOLUTELY NOTHING to gain by killing LW. If they wanted to do that, its would have happened long time ago.

Ultimate beneficiary in all these assassination (starting from LalithA, Premdasa, GaminiD) has always been LTTE.

Deaths to be happy about:

1) Rohana Wijeweera
2) Rajiv Gandhi
3) Velupilai Prabakaran, Pottu Aman & Velu Jr (when it happens)

I really wish SP Thamilselvan was still alive...it would have been so funny to watch him and his grin try to explain the LTTE permanent withdrawal.

Air Strikes at LTTE positions - Wanni
Sri Lanka Air Force fighter jets have carried out two more air strikes targeting LTTE terrorists now loosing the battle in Wanni.

According to Air Force spokesperson Wing Commander Janaka Nanayakkara, Air Force jets have pounded LTTE terrorists withdrawing their heavy guns in the Chundikulam area around 1.25 PM.

The other air strike has been carried out at 3.15 PM targeting LTTE reinforcement on the Mullaittivu battlefront, said the spokesperson. He added that the attack has been launched in support of the Sri Lanka Army 59 Division.

Speaking further, Wing Commander Nanayakkara told that both air raids have been effective citing operational sources.

Meanwhile, the Air Force has released video footages of recent air raids at terrorist positions to media today.

Below is a statement by "Dr" Subramanian Swamy to a question about the operations against LTTE:

"The relevant question instead is: What should India do now to secure Tamil human rights, since the Tamils are squeezed between the devil[LTTE] and the deep sea[Sinhala chauvinists].

My answer is: India must initiate action to assist the Sri Lankan government to take out the LTTE, and the same time tell their President, Rajapakse, that following the end of the LTTE, India reserves the right to intervene militarily if the Sri Lanka government does not implement, as promised, a proper devolution of powers for the Tamils under the Constitution of Sri Lanka."

The following is the comment by a reader of AT following this report:

"Submitted by S.Ramabhadran on Thu, 2009-01-08 17:54.

Dr Swamy was a sympathiser of LTTE and tried to invade Sri Lanka in fishing boats about 20 years ago. After the assassination of Rajiv Gandhi, he turned against LTTE and still remains a vociferous critic. However, there is a point to note in his view. What is the guarantee that after the elimination of LTTE by the GoSL, Sri Lanka tamils will have a peaceful life? Will their culture be safeguarded? Can the President of Sri Lanka give an assuarance for it? Because Sri lanka leaders have a history of tracking back citing various reasons. "

Greed, it appears knows no bounds. One cannot equate safety of citizens of SL (whether Tamil or otherwise with Sri lankan leaders "tracking back". What this commentator is referring to would be events like JRJ's opposition to SWARD-SJV pact which proposed specific, ethnically based territories in the east. If you call defence of integrity of SL back-tracking then so be it.

Do you guys at least now, see the reasoning behind Ananda-USA's proposals for safe-guarding the Sri Lankan territorial integrity following this land struggle?

If you don't and you are Sri Lankan then please put away some savings to catch a refugee boat to Australia.

ananda,

as we discussed earlier today, SLAF and SLA are targeting fleeing tigers.

1. according to tn, more than 40 bombs were dropped in the chundikulam area which is fantastic.

2. the new vanni capital - tharmapuram has been attacked by SLA repeatedly. tn reports 7 civilian deaths. what this really means is not civilian deaths but VERY LARGE scale LTTE casualties. tharmapuram hospital should be taken over by SLA so that tigers will lose it. more wounded tigers will be dead tigers!

3. all tiger groupings should be attacked without delay.

4. tn also reported a mid night attack by SLAF yesterday. simply stunning.

re: LTTE ban

when some countries were forcing GOSL to talk to tigers, banning tigers sends a very powerful signal.

it says we WILL NOT talk to them in no uncertain terms!!

in a way the gaza incident came as a blessing. the world is focussing on it allowing us both cover and 'protection'. we can bomb the shit out of tigers when the world is trying to figure out gaza.

to make things better, israel might take on targets within lebanon as well.

in 2006 also when the I-L war broke out SL disappeared from the IC's radar screen.

In this news lull, its worth reflecting on two things. VP's bad luck (has anyone done a reading of His Royal Fatness's horoscope? :) due to external events and Western Bloc hypocrisy.

VP's Bad Luck: 'Hero's' Day Speech in November overshadowed by Bombay terror attacks, neutralising TN's efforts to halt SLA offensives.

Israel's uncaringly brutal, disproportionate collective punishment of the Gaza ghetto by bombing and withholding basic supplies.

As for Western Western Bloc hypocrisy, I have two words. Gaza 2009. We all know why the IDF's doing this, now. They don't give a damn about minimising civilian casualties and they have until Obama gets in to get their dirty jobs done under the Bush regimes' tacit approval.

Nevertheless I don't think that GOSL should gloat and point out the obvious hypocrisy in the West's preaching to SL about 'human rights'. We still need their financial and intelligence support to dismantle the LTTE support network.

How did people transfer money to this bank? Did it have a SWIFT, BIC or IBAN code? Which clearing banks allowed it transfer facilities?

Where are the bank's deposits?

"KILINOCHCHI: VALIANT troops of the Army’s 53 and 55 Divisions continuing their forward march after the capture of LTTE stronghold PALLAI this afternoon (8), despite LTTE heavy resistance, obstacles, minefields and booby traps took the hold of SORANPATTU, 5 km southeast of PALLAI in the evening as their latest victory to record within a single day.

According to the ground troops, Tiger terrorists went to the extent of exploding a string of cluster bombs which have been banned under UN conventions as the troops were closing in on them.

Troops despite those unethical challenges resisted fearlessly. A few soldiers sustained injuries during those confrontations this afternoon.

It is believed that a considerable number of terrorists now sandwiched between SORANPATTU and PALLAI would have either perished or bled to death since all the routes for their passage either JAFFNA, KILINOCHCHI or to the north of MULLAITTIVU remain now sealed off after the capture of several key strategic major towns in those areas."

Peter was the CEO and Head of Capital Markets at BoTE, and Mahen the cashier/counter manager/bank manager / toilet cleaner of BoTE. BoTE went bust as Peter kept on approving sub prime loans to Mahaveer families.

4. Small Business: For erecting market stalls

5. Poultry and Goat Farming.

6. For the purchase of Tractors, Trailers and Lorries

Let me add to that list:

7. For the purchase of T56, RPGs, Mortars, 122mm artillery, and HMGs.

The two big boats are providing an alternative transport to Iyakachchi Chundikulam rd, in the inner side of the lagoon.

Some time ago, I wrote the following, which matches with this video evidence.

- Is the Rd from Iyakachchi to Chundikulam inundated at places? Boats may have been used where the road is untenable.

- Even in sea, they must have gone along coast mostly and only if needed used boats.

- We cannot risk SLN lives and assets unless we have a sure case of harvest.

So when we were vigilant in open sea, pussycats used land route to flee, and crossed small patches using boats.

What better 'action' LTTE could have taken at this moment of truth to DISCREDIT THE GOVERNMENT?

What ELSE is remaining there, fro the LTTE to scare us, since they cannot fight our troops?

Would Velu hesitate to behead his son / daughter / mother... if that action would accelerate arrival of Elaam?

Think about it... taking into account his actions over the past 25 years.

I am particularly concerned about those loud mouths preaching publicly against GOSL.... they are good 'raw material' for the LTTE at this moment.

CASC, Shay,
Thanks, dear chaps, for the clarification regarding the sniper rifles used by our brave army chaps. I thought I saw it somewhere that SL special forces use the Dragunov. So then the regular army is using L96A1.

I saw this about L96A1 and 115A3 in strategypage.com.
[The British Army is replacing most of its 3,000 7.62mm L96A1 sniper rifles with one modified to use the .338 (8.6mm) Lapua Magnum caliber round. The Accuracy International "Super Magnum" rifle is basically a L96A1 "Arctic Warfare" rifle modified to handle the larger, 8.6mm Lapua Magnum round.

Snipers in Iraq, and especially Afghanistan, have been calling for a longer range round, but find the 12.7mm (.50 caliber) weapons too heavy. The .338 (8.6mm) Lapua Magnum round has an effective range (about 1,500 meters) about 50 percent greater than the 7.62mm standard NATO round. ]

Cheers!

to be fair, I did not see anyone rejoicing over the journalist killing, It is a murder and the perpetrators must be punished. There is no two about that. Democracy means, you have opposition. If you cannot answer to the opposition other than the bullet, then you are not a good leader. Simple as that. Right now, I strongly believe ruling party connection to this murder. But, that is just me. In SL, all parties committed crime when in power. JRJ regime was the worst in history.

I don't think the general public know who is for sure at this stage. The truth is it is easy hire a killer to kill anyone in Sri Lanka.

How many journalists have been killed in the past and who killed them?

People in Sri Lanka usually don't like criticism. Some people shut their doors on blogs when others do it or call childish names.

Ability to take a criticism like a grown up man is a good human quality. The fake patriots will not tell such things for their fellow loving brothers. They are only interested in messing up people's minds.

Sure Lasantha W was a traitor! If you look at his Newspapers they are full of anti-government articles and more disgustingly LTTE supporting ones as well.

However just as DW allows everybody's opinion on this blog, there should be a freedom in this country for free expression of ideas. That might be one distinguishing factor from a government like ours and a ruthless LTTE control.

Therefore I think this is a cold blooded murder, as Lasantha W was just an un-armed civilian travelling in a car. If the government allows this trend to continue it would set a dangerous precedent. I am not saying that the government did this but , unless the government reveal who did this all fingers point towards the government.

This is so unwanted and would be just like getting a black mark during these unprecedented glorious victories of Sri Lankan history.

Yesterday if you checked out SF's blog at LNP, the man was having a blogpost titled "Balu sirasa under attack". He directly indicated that the attack was done by the government. The man even claimed repeatedly that he heard people celebrating Sirasa incident by firing crackers. Having followed this SF guy for sometime, I would tell that he has more political connections than military connections. But today somehow that blogpost is deleted . If someone thinks that yesterdays Sirasa incident and LW incident are linked yesterdays claim by SF@LND is definitely troubling !

Therefore perpetrators of this crime should be brought to justice at any cost !

I do not mourn his death as he was a bastard who exposed unnecessary information about SLDF, attempted spoil work against SLDF, conducted pavement quality journalism, threatened ppl for blackmail, took part in vicious master planning with RW and co, etc etc.

Why would you force that I should feel sad when such a cancer is killed? Why do you think that no matter who it is we ought to feel sad?

However I think he shouldn't be killed. Ppl like him has been very much hated by majority of SL. His acts were bringing them all into one side. So he should have been allowed to make it happen more.

And today we see a man gunned down against the norm. So there is no assurance that it won't happen tomorrow against someone else.

On these grounds I denounce the act.

You are welcome.

Its possible that the SLA uses the Dragunov too. NORINCO the SLA's main arms supplier definitely makes these guns. Probably cost about one fourth or one fifth the cost of the L96A1.

The LTTE snipers use it too. Its a relatively cheap gun made in many countries, Because of its age it probably does not have the modern alloys and computerized machining found in modern guns. It uses a very old caliber (7.62 x 54) which I believe goes back to WW1. All the ex-Soviet guns are easy to use and are made so that ordinary soldiers can strip these with basic tools and little training.

The vintage Lee Enfield No4 Mk2 that the SLA used before the eelam wars would also make excellent snipping guns with a little modification (long barrel and large caliber bullet). The British Army used some of these WW2 guns in the 1981 Falkland war.

Cheers !

The 53 Division under the command of Brigadier Kamala Gunaratne had to face comparatively severe resistance from the LTTE and took control of the Kilali and Muhamalai LTTE defences little later than the 55 Division."

3. all tiger groupings should be attacked without delay.

4. tn also reported a mid night attack by SLAF yesterday. simply stunning.]

Lasantha's killing was most probably done by a group close to UNP (before the elections)and LTTE. Just to destabilise Colombo. They are going for soft targets.

Ananda-USA said...

In my book Lasantha Wickramatunga was not a patriot. Whatever his reasons and funding sources were, he was assisting the LTTE in his writing to bring down the GOSL which is the only effective government that has emerged to defeat the LTTE, and preserve the motherland, in 30 years!

Nevertheless, I strongly condemn his killing. If he violated the prevention of terrorism laws, he should have been hauled into court and prosecuted. We must respect the laws of the land.

I also do not believe that either the destruction of Sirasa, or the Lasantha Wickramatunga killing, are the work of the GOSL. These coordinated actions are in no way GOSLsanctioned acts.

Why should the GOSL do this?; it is not to their advantage, they have no need of it; they have the support of the vast majority of the people of Sri Lanka, already. In fact, it is to break that support and trust that this was done, at this time by anti-national forces.

Recently, there have been many posts by LLTE agents at foreign websites pointing out that MR has taken over the Media Portfolio; these may have been to set the stage for these acts.

THIS IS AN LTTE OPERATION camouflaged to look like a GOSL sanctioned operation, to defame the GOSL, and divide the Sinhala people on the eve of the Provincial Elections, and to prevent the final defeat of the LTTE in the battlefield.

I hope and pray that the voting public in Sri Lanka are smart enough to recognize and confront this for what iot is: An LTTE trap!

Sam Perera said...

That last battle story came from Soosai around 2004-5 period. LTTE was at its zenith of power. That was a final "war" they boasted about before establishing Eelam, not the final battle before getting extinguished. That probably was a diversion tactic in that time.

LTTE Proscription in Sri Lanka:

This article at D B S Jeyaraj's Transcurrents.com is correct that the three reasons given are among those driving the decision; but they are not the only ones. Here are four additional ones, that may be even more important than Jeyaraj's three reasons:

1. The GOSL has correctly judged that the LTTE would be the seed around which all separatists would crystallize in post-war Sri Lanka. It has correctly judged that Sri Lankans want a final-end to this, and the govt. needs to have a legal free-hand to pursue residual LTTE agents pursuing the terrorist separatist agenda.

2. The GOSL has correctly judged that SL Tamils are at the peak of their dissatisfaction with the LTTE, especially the Vanni Tamils now held prisoner in the Mullaitivu jungle. What better way to demonstrate to them, that their welfare is a concern of the highest importance to the GOSL, than to proscribe their tormentors at the peak of their suffering?

3. Not proscribing the LTTE has long been an inconsistency in our own appeals for help against fundraising to foreign governments who have responded by proscribing them. With the military defeat of the LTTE in Lanka, the LTTE becomes an organization without a country...and will seek to establish itself in Tamil Nadu, or elsewhere. India will be the country most directly threatened by the increasingly obvious calls of Tamil Nadu leaders leaning towards separatism and their close links to the LTTE. The next country most threatened is likely to be the land-rich, but sparsely populated, liberal Canada, which clearly lacks the legal and law enforcement strength and focus needed to cope with the large Tamil diaspora population controlled by a Mafia with international terrorist links. Like the Italian Mafia, that has penetrated every branch of the Italian government, this organization has a very real potential to become a country within a country, inimical to the interests of the average law-abiding Canadian citizen. Sri Lanka has to close the door against all forms of illegal-trafficking at the Sri Lanka end, to help these other countries bring the emerging LTTE Mafia International to an end.

4. Finally, there is the issue of punishment for LTTE leaders captured in Sri Lanka. This is best handled within the context of a proscribed organization, to preclude all kinds of civil disobedience that will be launched by their supporters in Sri Lanka. Supporters such as the TNA, the NGOs and the INGOs who helped them build earthbunds. All of these INGO bleeding hearts will now descend on Sri Lanka to tell us with "moral authority", inherited from only God knows where, how we should secure our country by lionizing the LTTE and passing them off as the "only true representatives of the Tamil people". Complete foreclosure on the LTTE is best!

[Three "real" reasons behind Govt. proscribing LTTE

Notwithstanding claims by the government headed by President Mahinda Rajapakse that the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) organization was proscribed because it failed to release the people allegedly held through force in the Wanni, the real motives according to authoritative govt sources were different.

According to these sources who spoke on condition of anonymity there were three real reasons for the Government to clamp down the ban on January 7th midnight.

The first was tremendous pressure by Defence secretary Gotabhaya and Army commander Lt. Gen Sarath Fonseka. The duo whose influence on the President and Government is enormous had accelerated and intensified pressure after the capture of Kilinochchi and Paranthan.

Gotabhaya and Sarath who think alike on most matters felt that no quarter should be given for the LTTE and that the military campaign should continue until the tigers were totally defeated.

It was feared that the tigers may try and stave off possible defeat by reviving peace talks through international mediatory efforts.

If the on going military drive was suspended and talks begun with the LTTE , it would seriously affect armed forces morale it was pointed out.

Moreover open revolt from the rank and file and junior officers was also anticipated.

As such it was insisted that all options for the LTTE to enter talks should be foreclosed.

In 2002 the LTTE demanded that it be de-proscribed for it to enter talks. Logically it meant that the tigers would not enter talks if it was banned.

So it was advocated that the ban be re-imposed so that the tigers could not enter talks. It was in military jargon a pre-emptive strike.

The President who is also on the same wavelength with the defence secy and army chief promptly agreed

The second reason was also on similar lines.

The International community has been mounting pressure on the government that it should initiate talks with the LTTE

The government rationale for wagging war with the tigers was allegedly to weaken the LTTE and force it to come to the negotiating table

The international community which went along with the idea now feels the tigers have been considerably weakened.

So efforts are on to make Colombo revive political dialogue.

The proscription therefore is a pre – emptive strike to prevent further IC pressure

The third reason is India

Apparently New Delhi does not want any negotiations with the LTTE. But in recent times there is significant pressure from Tamil Nadu that India should pressurise Colombo into resuming talks with the LTTE.

More importantly there is a growing demand in Tamil Nadu that India should remove the ban on the LTTE. It was imposed in 1992 after Rajiv Gandhi assassination in 1991.

Many Tamil Nadu leaders have called for New Delhi to de – proscribe LTTE on the grounds that it is not proscribed in Sri Lanka.

Thus it was suggested by the big neighbour that LTTE shuld be banned.

These then are the real reasons behind the re – imposition of the LTTE ban.]

Moshe Dyan said...

ananda,

indeed yes, mate.

as i said yesterday the REAL reason for banning the LTTE is to FRUSTRATE ANY 'peace' with them.

1. tigers won't come for peace as long as it is banned.

2. govt cannot LEGITIMATELY agree to anything while the LTTE is banned.

3. by putting together 1 & 2, in the context of the LAST call by MR to tigers to surrender, we are in for aggressive harvesting, at least on paper.

4. the IC is stumped nicely. blooody hypocrats while banned the LTTE in their own countries preach us to talk to them.

why not? little lanka follows their example!! what a way to shut their foul mouths!

5. to top it all up, bogs (RB) goes and tells the IC that the ban is to facilitate negotiations!

6. supporting, abetting, concerting with, working in the company of, etc., etc., a banned organisation are ALSO criminal offences.

Yes, indeed! Complete Forclosure; shut all doors against the LTTE and all supporters, in one fell swoop.

Does anybody know if its compulsory to wear helmets for SLA combatants?
I've seen many a time they walk around with hats or with no head gear. Its a bit distressing to see pictures of soldiers shot through side of the head if it could easily be prevented. I know for a fact it's compulsory for US troops serving in Iraq/Afgan to wear head protection at all times out on duty.
Do you know if one of those helmets could withstand LMG fire?

This article calls for the GOSL to abrogate the 13th Amendment; as I do.

['Deny funds to anti-national NGOs'

By Janaka Perera

The World Alliance for Peace in Sri Lanka (WAPS) has urged the Rajapaksa Government to deny foreign funds to any organization that has questioned the country's sovereignty and advocated power sharing with the LTTE.

WAPS representatives made this appeal at a media briefing held at the Royal Asiatic Society office at Mahaweli Centre, Colombo on Wednesday – the same day the government banned the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam. WAPS comprises of Sri Lankan expatriates across the globe committed to the cause of defeating separatist terrorism. Among the representatives present at the media briefing were Dasarath Jayasuriya (Australia), Mahinda Gunasekera (Canada) and Ira de Silva (Canada).

Commenting on the fall of Kilinochchi and Elephant Pass, they said:

"The victory that we have won has been against a host of local and international forces. We urge the government to stand firm and resist external powers that want to dictate to us how we should govern our country. We have been at the receiving end of such unsolicited advice for 500 years. A major tool of foreign interference has been foreign-funded non-governmental organizations – literally a few individuals fattened by foreign money masquerading as civil society. It is their lies that we at WAPS had often to counteract."

WAPS representatives stressed the need for ensuring that what Sri Lanka has won in war will be not lost in peace.

"Forces, both internal and external, that in many ways tried to prevent the military victory are now waiting to change the victory to camouflaged defeat. We should remind ourselves that this time it is not like the 1980s where India having trained and armed the separatist insurgent groups imposed the 13th Amendment against all international norms. WAPS considers the 13th Amendment as a travesty imposed on a small nation by a regional bully as part of her external policy."

The representatives urged that suitable grass-root models be explored including India's Panchayat system. Devolution to political party officials should not extend beyond the district, according to WAPS. In addition it has recommended a more equitable power sharing arrangement at the Centre where the minorities would be drawn into the decision-making process from the policy-making stage to the implementation stage through fair representation in special Parliamentary Sub-Committees and Experts Committees, where they would participate in the day-to-day governance of the nation.

WAPS has called on the government to speedily develop the North and East so that the development the LTTE denied them could be quickly made up. The model, the representatives suggested, should be the multi-ethnic Western Province where all ethnic and religious communities live side by side.

WAPS came into being on the heels of the World Federation of Overseas Sri Lankans, at the time of Chandrika Kumaratunga's questionable leadership and the weak-willed Ranil Wickremesinghe Government.

Observed a WAPS spokesperson:

"In those dark days when the government itself became conduit for LTTE propaganda we attempted to tell the truth. Our activities across the globe including in Norway as well as events we organized in Sri Lanka helped expose Tiger perfidy as well as those of our then ruling cliques."

WAPS member organizations include:

Society for Peace, Unity and Human Rights in Sri Lanka (SPUR), Victoria, Australia,

Sri Lankans Against Terrorism (SLAT), North South Wales, Australia,

Canadian Association for United Sri Lanka (CAUS), Canada,

Sri Lanka United National Association (SLUNA), Canada,

United Sinhalese Association, Rome, Italy,

Ape Shakti Sanvidhanaya, Auckland, New Zealand,

Sinhala Association of Sri Lankans, United Kingdom and

New York Society of United Sri Lankans, United States of America .

Rana,

Whoever did this killing only helps anti-Sri Lankan forces. Government does not need any of these now. All the anti-Sri Lankan forces are humiliated including the Wiki and Kiri Joker wing of UNP as recently demonstrated by Ravi K. Therefore, the only effect this has it to belittle our heroes.

Any way, this was the modus operandi of LTTE for the longest time. I view this with utmost suspicion in LTTE. No matter what, we can't let us fall in to the same LTTE trap in this historical moment.

Sam,

Yes, I agree with you on LW's case. It has a hall mark of LTTP or under world orgs.

However, I was talking about "Sirasa" case. Eye witness records show clearly, it is different to LTTP usual acts.

What is sad is not the killing of LW. If he exposed SLDF, yes it is unpatriotic and I am puzzled by there were not enough law to prosecute him. My sadness is our ability to gun down someone we don't like.

There are many journalists I don't respect. Sanjana Haththotuwa at groundviews.org is one of them. You write something on his web site criticizing him, he will immediately delete it. He claim his site to be award winning news media site and some day his donors will find out that he is another bad journalist.

I got the feeling that groundview manufacture news item to show they are independent reporters so that they get grant money from the donors.

There are other ways to take journalists down.

Just a thought about "real reasons" for proscribing the LTTE. Jeyaraj used this term to make the Government appear cynical as is his customary role.
I think the reasons you have given are also quite valid reasons.

However, I would advocate seeing the Government's reasoning for what it is. It is our kith and kin who are trapped in Wanni. We have to pull out all stops to rescue them.
(I like to put myself in a situation where the village where one of my relatives live has been taken hostage- I would not negotiate with such criminals- but until hostages are taken there may have to be avenues left open to talk. This does not mean that you give the criminals parity nor any guarantees of freedom from prosecution- all you can guarantee them is that they would not be killed if they disarm and surrender).

Currently the LTTE have been down-graded from a terrorist organisation with conventional capability to one with only guerrilla capability. Furthermore, they continue to be terrorist whose modus operandi is to hold innocents hostage.

The immediate challenge aside from actually harvesting tigers is to protect and rescue the civilians. This has to be the primary reason right now. The fact that other reasons are also served is good management of strategy and tactics.

Anybody lives in SL? (any blogger/patriot)
Of course MR is good at his War. How come anybody oppose the government politics become a lunatic or a LTTE member. LW's media was a one similar to ITN media. "Wholesale Kade Yanava". But nobody can justify the killing. Eventhough he was not popular at his political p.o.v, he is the one bravest journalist we have had for a long time.
MR & the gov is justifying the deaths & negligance of Supreme court (they can't secure everybody,.. they say) with the advantages of WAR wins.
This is turning out to be something similar to Premadasa regime, colder version of it *(Not all the good part of premadasa politics)
Who ever goes against gov cannot be removed.. this is a worst political situ we've ever had in this country... except for the WAR you all are cheering.

Patriots (most diaspora singhalese).... :-)

Gov will remove SB when they capture Mulative,..looking at the way they are governing ..
then there will be "No opposition" (ranil does not have a sound in the country as you all know.. JVP is hadicapped)in SL and what will be the Future of SL??
"Kumbala Malu kevanam Duka vidapan balalo" kiyala thamai kiyanna venna..
Cheer only good,, oppose what is not good (at least oppose worst)

Have pleasent blogging sessions..PATRIOTS...

mayil,

that's what the govt said.

but there is no correlation between the two. LTTE would rather get banned, than change its terrorist plans.

this is what happened in canada, EU as well.

simply LTTE doesn't speak this language.

but good "excuse" by GOSL to the IC to justify the ban.

nu,

in PRACTICAL terms there is no use of an opposition in SL. the ruling party does whatever it pleases. and the opposition is OK with that. what the opposition wants is to SOMEHOW grab power and do the same.

also when there is a strong opposition, govt have to dance to the tune of thonda, hakeem, etc., etc.

PLUS when there is a strong opposition, govt can't do any LONG TERM things. it has to ALWAYS work to the galary.

so it is BETTER if there is no strong opposition in SL.

BUT we need a strong judiciary that looks after ppl's interests. that is there (subject to the sri lankan style).

there is also a BETTER police today than b4.

having said that we need a strong RESPONSIBLE opposition. the "OPPOSITION" can never be that. it should come from the ppl and within the govt.

if the govt is VERY popular to the extent of silencing the opposition peacefully, it is fair that there is no effective opposition, me thinks. it is like republicans in the US NOW or the nationals in aussie or khalidasia in bangla.

things WILL change when the time is up.

OTOH, GOSL needs the backing of almost everyone to win this war. as you know it cannot be done with lankan types of oppositions.

I don't blog .. but I've been reading the stuff here for few months and enjoyed the war updates of our IT captain of SLA
just wanted to mantion the "sakkili" work gov is turning into. Only week into take over of Media ministry 3 major attacks were on Media.(may be these media dont carry our words)
Neglected the Supreme court ... and nobody seems to care about as gov is marketing the War campains. We can't eat, breath, drink , walk the war. It's not the ONLY thing country should have.....

I regret the murder of LW and the attack on Sirasa. Whatever my differences with these people I am upset by this for many reasons.

Both LW and Sirasa were unscrupulous in many ways. Even if they are exposing any corruptions they themselves are corrupted as the individuals whom they try (tried) to expose. To expose corruptions and dirty deals one needs to have credibility. If the government’s credibility is zero then the credibility of UNP, Sirasa, LW and Mangala measured in large negative numbers. This is proven by their conduct.

By the above statement I am not trying to rule out the involvement of the government with any certainty. Even if they are not responsible they deserve the finger pointing at them. They had enough opportunities to demonstrate that they are above such crimes. They played with the security arrangements of Anura, Janka and many others. Even if the Government is not so noble, just for the sake of their own protection against possible accusations of attacks of this nature they should not have played with their security. They did and that meant they do not care about the public opinion. So they are getting their Karma.

On the other hand, it is so difficult to imagine that the Government has any hand in these attacks at this juncture (as many others pointed out) but this could have been their alibi. Knowing that people would ne hesitant to connect the Government with the attacks some unscrupulous elements would have done that. These elements may include the President himself. Knowing that this is their alibi the LTTE could have done this to discredit the Government to take some mileage out of it. (The LTTE’s thinking could have been: since this is the moment people would be hesitant to link the Government to the attacks the Government thought that this is the best moment to settle their longstanding dues and acted accordingly.)

Also in the President’s statement there is some thing that could be suspicious. He mentioned that LW was a close friend of him. If it were true then that was OK to mention otherwise it generates suspicion. If LW was actually a close friend of the President then that raises eyebrows too. Not having a personal animosity is different from being a close friend. I cannot imagine that I would be a close friend of Premadasa, LW, Mangala or LTTE leader. This itself portrays the duplicity of our politics. I would have been a close friend of Iriyagolla or Dudley for that matter regardless my political views.

At the end the LTTE and UNP get the benefit of these attacks but a short-sighted government might not have perceived that. If they could think in such a broader manner in dealing with dissent they could have done many things differently.

Finally I do not speculate who done it, but if the President has any respect for public opinion then he would invite an independent panel that can be agreed by general public to investigate the attacks and provide more security for the people who could be next targets. I doubt that this will happen.

Thanks!

t. Colonel Nalinda Kumarasinghe, RWP, RSP was the most senior Army Officer to die in the battlefront from the commencement of the Mavil Aru operation in June, 2006.

The signal operator went along with him also got caught in the trapping. It was unfortunate to lose a senior officer in the rank of Lt. Colonel at a time Security Forces are fast completing their mission of eliminating terrorism form the Sri Lankan soil.

This comment was found in an article in Sri Lanka Guardian:

"If the President is sincere about restoring democracy in the North, he should listen to broader Tamil opinion from all sections of the community such as doctors, lawyers and professors."

WTF!- Since when did the doctors, lawyers and professors become all sections of the broader community. How about asking the opinion of Nagesan in Vanni who has lost his daughter to the LTTE? How about listerning to people like Mr. Sebastian Rasalingam (who has lost a grandson) who has warned against devolution to the provinces?

It is exactly these doctors, lawyers and professors with their arrogant bitterness, living overseas who have wrought this curse on the poor Tamil people. I say ask the man in Vanni first.

CASC,
I am happy to hear that our snipers have the advanced weapons needed for the job. Generally, a sniper's primary function is to provide detailed reconnaissance from a concealed position and, if necessary, to reduce the enemy's fighting ability by striking at a small number of high value targets, especially officers, communication and other personnel. I think we need to employ our sniper teams (shooter and spotter) more now, since we have the LTTE bastards cornered in a relatively small area. Who knows, we may catch the fat freak in the open one of these days and have a sniper team concealed to take the shot.

Cheers!
