After laying siege to Mulaitivu from 3 different areas, the 59 Division finally entered Mulaitivu, a small island-like area across the Nanthikandal lagoon. The LTTE had started vacating the area prior to this.
The delay experienced in entering Mulaitivu was to avoid losses in open lagoon. By last evening, Mulaitivu was completely under seige from the south and east, except from the north. 59 and 55 Divisions, who were expecting to jointly take Mulaitivu could not do so as the 55 was held up by some resistance further north.
But the linkup between the 59 and the 55 is inevitable as the 55 marches beyond Chalai and finally reaches the Nanthikandal lagoon. With this, the two divisions will turn eastward now becoming the first divisions to do so in this war as the Commander's plan to get the Tigers boxed-in in the middle gradually becomes a reality.
One avenue of approach would march along the A-35 as the uncleared areas get sandwiched by the 58, 55, 59, TF 2, 3 and 4 while the 57 prepares to hold down and secure Kilinochchi to welcome the trapped civilians.

I think LTTE is the first to take out a dam in modern history. Though they did this to falter the army, the act itself destroyed civilians and their property; and thus terrorized the civilians.
Holding civilians against their will, as a human shield, is also a terrorist act. Most of the acts of terrors that will come about from here on will involve these civilians.

It does not make any difference. In this part of the world politicians define ppl, whereas in some other places ppl define politicians. These moderates are not bound to political religionism. Mostly they belong to the category of “floating voters” who is not yet a majority. Most ppl look for their party to decide their political views. If a major political leader calls on killing some minority today [like in 83] it will happen, at least for a short period.
The future of SL is in the hand of the few powerful ppl of each faction, race or region. We need them to gather into one side and work for one future. Fatpig provided the reason for that unity so far. Lack of him may make some of them to divert. How can you keep Karuna, Pillayan, Snagaree, Douglas all fighting one another under one umbrella.
Note that in politics there cannot be an unbalanced power tree.

NEW YORK: Two of four defendants pleaded guilty Monday to charges they tried to supply missiles and assault weapons to militants involved in a bloody civil war in Sri Lanka.
U.S. authorities said the men took part in a secret mission to help militants locked in the bloody civil war in their homeland by buying and smuggling hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of surface-to-air missiles and guns.
The FBI engineered a sting in which three of the men drove from Canada to New York in 2006 to meet with undercover agents posing as black-market arms dealers.
After the men crossed the border, the undercover agents lured them to a warehouse, where they were caught on videotape and arrested after allegedly agreeing to an initial shipment of 10 surface-to-air missiles and 500 AK-47s.
The videotaped sting was central to an unusual case against four alleged agents of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam, or "Tamil Tigers" — a Sri Lankan rebel force the U.S. State Department calls a terrorist organization.
Along with missiles, the men also wanted guns, according to court papers.
"We need AK-47s, but only if you have Russian-made or American-made," prosecutors allege one defendant said during a meeting with an undercover agent posing as a crooked arms dealer. "Not the Chinese."
On Monday, just as jury selection was due to begin, Nadarasa Yogarasa and Sathajhan Sarachandran, pleaded guilty to providing material support to terrorists.
The case against two other men — Sahilal Sabaratnam and Thiruthanikan Thanigasalam — was expected to go forward.
Although several of the Tamil Tigers' sympathizers have come under investigation in the United States, Canada, Europe and elsewhere, authorities say Sabaratnam and Thanigasalam would be the first to ever go to trial in a U.S. court on charges of supporting terrorists. Their lawyers have declined to discuss the case.
The Tamil Tigers have been fighting for an independent homeland since 1983. The 3 million mainly Hindu Tamils have long claimed persecution by the predominantly Buddhist Sinhalese majority in the nation of 19 million people. The conflict has killed tens of thousands on the island, which lies off India's southern tip.
The Sri Lankan military captured the rebels' final stronghold Sunday and fought heavy battles with the separatists in a rapidly shrinking, densely populated war zone on Monday, the military said.
The arms case is part of a broader campaign by U.S. authorities to cut off support for the Tamil Tigers. Prosecutors have also brought charges against several men they allege tried to bribe U.S. officials to remove the group from the terrorism list.
The four defendants each face up to 30 years in prison if convicted.
