The Army has only 400 meters to reach the Puthukudirippu Town center. Heavy fighting raged on as both sides clashed for this final bastion. SLA is using heavy armour extensively as Tigers had removed civilians from the Town today. The town is expected to fall within the next 48hrs.
However, Tiger teams have infiltrated along the A-9. An STF ambush party was counter ambushed by Tigers in the general area north of Vavuniya at Puliyankulam.
Regarding the Zlin 143 attack, there is no confirmation of a pilot captured alive. Sources say the first plane downed on the IRD building following anti-aircraft gunfire. over 40 persons, majority civilians were injured in the downing of the plane. One person later died. The other plane went down at Welabada following F7 attack.

I also wish to note what Ananda-USA said "there is no better race for Tamils to live among than Sinhalese" (or to that effect), which is true. These two races share so much.
I am for one who would never ever be convinced that the roots of Tamil terror has anything to do with Sinhala only policy. That was a political need/response of the hour against discriminated Sinhala masses from non-English speaking background. Both Sinhalese and Tamil masses were subjugated under that. If any injustice done to Tamil non-English speaking masses in 1956, as you have mentioned, it was corrected in 1958.
Every act brought forward in the post independence to do justice to the majority race the country, Sinhala masses and their religion - which suffered under untold injustice over 500 years - were interpreted as acts of discrimination against Tamils. This is a fallacy. As I said once, there is no land on earth where sole minority representative (LTTE) could exert atrocities to a majority, yet 60% of that minority could survive among the majority. To massacre entire aboriginal tribes only required one white woman having sex with (on her own consent) with one aboriginal youth. Same goes to black Americans until late 50’s.
Tamil issue stems from something deeper. Only they can fix that. They have a very deeply rooted "Tamil super race" view and it's inevitable outcome is Tamils wanting to become a mono-ethnic entity governed by them. My view is if that is the case they must go to Tamil Nadu (which is the land of Tamils). We simple can not afford that as we have 20mill mouths to feed.

Sri Lanka Air Force (SLAF) sources said that SLAF could have easily shot down the LTTE aircraft before it crashed into the Inland Revenue Department (IRD) building Friday night, had a five star hotel in the vicinity virtually not given the directions to the Tiger flight by switching on lights in the hotel building and compound. The whole of Colombo was in darkness after radars detected two LTTE aircraft heading for the city, after taking off from Mullaitivu.
“One of the planes which flew over Chaithiya junction was circling the area many times in an attempt to locate the target. All of a sudden the five star hotel switched on its lights and then the plane was seen moving towards air force headquarters”, a LAKBIMAnEWs staffer who is an eyewitness to the incident said. “At a time when the whole of Colombo was plunged into darkness, the hotel decides to switch on even its garden lights” he asserted. Meanwhile it is evident that the two planes were targeting SLAF headquarters in Colombo and the SLAF base in Katunayake as a pro LTTE website indicated. Temple Trees may have been a possible target.
Tamilnet falsely claimed “The LTTE Friday night claimed two aircraft on a Black Air Tiger mission dived into Sri Lanka Air Force (SLAF) Headquarters in Colombo and into the SLAF base at Katunayaka, carrying out sucessful air raids”.
Our staffer said: “I was with some friends at the press club discussing the country’s situation.
Since the “lights went off we came out of the club and we saw flashlights being swished around and anti aircraft guns firing in the air.
Then all of a sudden a plane came from the side of the port towards Chaithiya junction and began circling the area and, suddenly the hotel in the vicinity of SLAF switched on its lights and then the plane went in the direction of SLAF Headquarters”.

The LTTE leaders, who each controlled an area of hundreds of square kilometers, are today, in charge of one square kilometer each. Bhanu, Theepan and Swarnam have been appointed to be in control of one kilometer areas. The LTTE is making every effort to halt the advancing forces of 58 Division which is advancing a minimum of one kilometre a day”, a front line commander said.

Why weren’t flying Tigers intercepted?
Questions are once again being asked as to why the Air Force failed to intercept the LTTE aircraft before they reached Colombo, on their ninth air raid on Friday night. This is in the light of the service publicly stating that it was well prepared to meet any challenge from the rudimentary aircraft operated by the Tigers.
Some are of the opinion that they should have been intercepted before reaching Colombo knowing the fact the threat they pose to the vital installations in the Commercial Capital.
Air Force Spokesman Wing Commander Janaka Nanayakkara yesterday, however, said that it was impossible to attack LTTE aircraft, because they were flying at 300 feet, which was too low for Air Force planes.
He insisted that the Air Force was on alert to meet the enemy from the time they were spotted around 8:30 pm and their arrival time was estimated. When the aircraft reached Colombo to attack the Air Force Headquarters, they were successfully shot down, according to the spokesman.
“Once they reached an altitude of around 10,000 feet, they could be targeted successfully. When the aircraft is flying at a lower level it is impossible to attack,” he explained.
This was the ninth attack carried out by the LTTE since 2007. The first was on March 26, 2007, when they attacked Katunayake, followed almost a month later on April 24, 2007, by an attack on Palali. April 29, 2007, saw Kolonnawa being targeted with October 22, 2007, being the last attack of that year in Anuradhapura.
Last year, there were four more attacks. The first of 2008 was on Welioya on April 26, August 26 on Trincomalee and the third on September 9 on Vauniya. Many will remember the Talliadi and Kelanitissa attacks on October 28, as the last sighting of the LTTE aircraft before Friday.

Somewhat controversial Sri Lankan Ambassador and Permanent Representative to the UN in Geneva, Dr. Dayan Jayatillake, who has, at times, gone out of his way to defend the country’s interests, in answering foreign critics of the government’s ‘war on terrorism,’ will return soon to Colombo, after completing his two-year term there.
The revolutionary politician turned university academic, who was picked by the Rajapaksa regime to defend its position at the world body, especially, on the subject of human rights, wielded a mighty rapier, which, some of the career diplomats frowned upon. His remarks also led, at times, to protests from foreign governments at the receiving end of his caustic comments.
It is not clear whether Jayatillake (52) will revert to his academic position at the Colombo University on his return or, continue to serve the government in some other capacity.
In the short-lived first North-Eastern Provincial Council under Chief Minister Varatharaja Perumal, Jayatillake was the sole Sinhala Minister in the administration. He was nearly killed at the funeral of Gen. Denzil Kobbekaduwa at the Borella Kanatte, when some enraged mourners set upon him. At that time, he was a great defender of the unpopular Premadasa regime.
Jayatillake is an out and out canal breed; he knows no diplomatic etiquette. Probably eats and washes with the same hand.

February 21, 2009 (AFP) - Tamil Tiger rebels who staged a suicide air raid on Sri Lanka's capital used a pocket torch to navigate, but their planes were packed with high explosives, military officials said Saturday.
One of the Tigers' two light aircraft was shot down before it could hit its intended target the main airforce base at Katunayaka the military said.
A military source said a search of the wreckage found that the pilot had no night vision equipment to fly in pitch darkness and instead used a pocket torch and a hand-held global positioning device.
"We have recovered the wreckage in almost one piece and found 215 kilos (473 pounds) of C-4 type high explosives," Wing Commander Nanayakkara told AFP. "But the aircraft had very basic navigational aides."
Authorities immediately switched off electricity in the capital when they detected the rebel aircraft heading toward the city late Friday.
Two people were killed and another 58 wounded when the second plane smashed into Colombo's main tax office.
Military officials said they had expected the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) to use the planes in a suicide attack before losing them to advancing government forces in the north of the island.
The guerrillas have now lost over 98 percent of the territory they once controlled and are confined to an area of less than 100 square kilometres (38 square miles) along a coastal jungle stretch in the island's northeast.
"Both planes were operated by suicide pilots," Nanayakkara said.
"One plane wanted to hit the air force headquarters, but due to the volume of anti-aircraft fire, it had to change course," he said. "He probably crashed into the Inland Revenue building after taking a lot of ground fire."
Military sources said they suspected the Tigers lacked sophisticated automated systems and had also used basic navigational aides on their previous missions to Colombo.
"It's not easy to fly low at night and it's even more difficult when you don't have the right instruments," a senior commercial pilot said. "These Tiger pilots must have had extensive training abroad."
The guerrillas are known to have at least five Zlin-143 planes smuggled into the country in parts and re-assembled.
Sri Lanka's military has captured all the air strips the guerrillas operated, but the two aircraft took off from a strip of paved road in an area still under their control.
They were airborne for nearly an hour before they were taken down by ground fire.

I firmly believe that Upul is right. When I drove in the area after the super massive TAF attack, I saw that some Army men putting up a cardboard building at the place where SLAF headquarters was to fool us. What I heard from Katunayake is that the SLAF camp there is gone altogether. I agree with Upul that SLAF does not exist any more and the war is going to turn in favour of LTTE. Fear not, in a few days, you will see SLA running away because there is no air support and Eelam is just around the corner.
