The Army has only 400 meters to reach the Puthukudirippu Town center. Heavy fighting raged on as both sides clashed for this final bastion. SLA is using heavy armour extensively as Tigers had removed civilians from the Town today. The town is expected to fall within the next 48hrs.
However, Tiger teams have infiltrated along the A-9. An STF ambush party was counter ambushed by Tigers in the general area north of Vavuniya at Puliyankulam.
Regarding the Zlin 143 attack, there is no confirmation of a pilot captured alive. Sources say the first plane downed on the IRD building following anti-aircraft gunfire. over 40 persons, majority civilians were injured in the downing of the plane. One person later died. The other plane went down at Welabada following F7 attack.

We need to buy good 3D radar and cover all the island. SLAF must find a way to down low flying objects as still they are not capable of doing that. SLAF and SLN both need to work more on protecting our sky and sea in long term. Buying MIG29 for SLAF and getting air capability for SLN should be considered.
Ok these r the latest news which i heard.normaly taf planes carry 20-40 kg one or two bombs. but this time found explosive more than 190KG. yesterday (22nd)evening

So this plane shot down in Katu carried 190 KG of high explosive and I suppose it carried a detonator if it was to crash land on to the hangers? So that must be the reason for not carrying the bombs and perhaps came from PTK.To be cautious is the best policy as they may appear from somewhere else in future. I doubt that all their assets are in this small area of 70 sq km.

Many LTTE cadres have infiltrated into other areas from shrinking eelam when east of A9 and west of 59 division was not fully guarded. They are the terras now operating in clandestine attacks. They cannot go back to the pack now. So, they are trying to disrupt civilian’s lives in order to divert defence forces from main attack.
It is not working but due to lethargy and ad hoc coordination of STF making things worst for some villagers. However, eventually our forces will eliminate this threat.

During the mutthur and Toppigala attacks I saw no less than 24 in two vehicles coming south from Manampitiya to Mayangana and towards Baddulla on the way to the jungles in lahugala.I reported this matter to the police in Tissa and Katharagama but their answer was for me to mind my own business. I too saw signs of them on the southern most coast of the Yala sanctuary where the guides were preventing us going further towards their habitation. I mentioned this many times in this blog.

Tamils fear peace talks with LTTE, say rights activists
Sri Lankan Tamils are wary of any peace talks that will give oxygen to the Tigers, said Rajan Hoole and K. Sritharan of the University Teachers for Human Rights (UTHR-Jaffna) in an interview with IANS news service.
India should stop seeing the Tamil conflict from a strategic prism and instead focus on the community’s long-term welfare and humanitarian concerns, they said. Stating that all previous peace parleys had only given a free run to the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE), Hoole and Sritharan told IANS: “Presently the indications we have are that the people want an end to the war but are wary of any more peace talks with the LTTE.”
Hoole and Sritharan said that several thousand civilians had now escaped into the government-controlled area, risking attacks from a furious LTTE that did not want Tamils to ditch it in its hour of crisis.
“Many have had the experience of being shot at by the LTTE as they escaped or (by) the army personnel at the entry points, deliberately provoked by LTTE fire.
The LTTE’s direct shooting at civilians has on most occasions been aimed at the legs, but cases of fatal shooting have also been reported,” they said in their statement.
In contrast, “generally the behaviour of soldiers at entry points has, in the cases known to us, been exceptionally good,” they said.
The civilians escaping from LTTE territory, they said, had been invariably forced to participate in activities of the Tigers before the terrorists began to retreat in the face of the military advance.
They pointed out that in the past India had mostly looked at the Sri Lankan issue through its ‘strategic interests’ and used Tamil militant groups for its short-term goals.
“The notion that the Tamils can be used as a ‘strategic interests resource’ is again being aired by prominent persons in India,” they pointed out.
“The plight of the Tamils in the island also forms about the only ‘political capital’ for some fringe groups in Tamil Nadu,” they said.
“Tamils in Sri Lanka have suffered enough and they should not be used as dispensable resources, as the LTTE (does).”

NO!! not at all.
3D radar may be bought for better overall surveillence but that cannot in ANYWAY would have stopped the 9 or so TAF attacks.
SLAF IS capable of shooting down low flying objects.
don't get confused.
the problem is DETECTION not interception. have explained this many times but got to do so again.
radars - the types used for tracking flying objects - are not capable of (and not made for) tracking low flying objects. so buying a new one for the SAME PURPOSE is not going to help.
when TAF planes want to cross our FDLs, they climb higher to avoid our guns. then they get registered in our radar.
then they bring the altitude down. low enough to avoid detection. our radar guys by now know there is a TAF crap in the sky but DO NOT KNOW WHERE THE HELL IT IS GOING or where it is at any given time.
for a J-7 to intercept a TAF crap, it should come with <20km from the target. this CANNOT be done without knowing where the zlin is!!!!
this is THE problem.
SLN, SLA or others could co-ordinate with SLAF but this too is a very time consuming affair as the taf crap's position should be always followed by ground monitors (if the plane circles the same place, then it is ok) which is not possible as a zlin is faster than ANY ground/sea craft.
the solution is to have GROUND surveillence radar that can track low flying objects and track the planes on ground b4 takeoff!!
also we need a few SAMs positioned close to strategic locations. SAMs are of VERY limited use bcos their horizontal range is VERY small. and unless TAF crap is circling, a truck, etc. cannot be used to give more range bcos of the speed difference. but in limited strategic locations SAMs would be useful.
buying world-class interceptors won't solve the detection problem though their interception range MAY be higher!!
BTW for obvious reasons our authorities will NOT accept that we have a detection problem!!!
they will site ONLY initial detection and MAY be a few more times if TAF was passing known AA positions like KAB.
i like MoD's "easy" approach to taf. only thing is, it is not at all popular.

I first want to thank you for kind words of encouragement you made for the troops. Your brothers and sisters in arms are humbled by your efforts against LTTE.
The offensives are progressing as planned, and as you already know Tiger airforce is no more.
During the last two weeks life for LTTE has been absolutely hell with no moment of breathing space. We have managed to capture a large haul of heavy weapons, some which were in new condition, as well as destroy over 8 tiger air crafts of various sorts.
It should be noted that though LTTE's conventional capability would destroyed, we would have to face a long term low intensity warfare in the near future.

I got myself almost killed last week but a good man died. The battle will end up with the destruction of LTTE mahaveer families who have so prop this terrorist organization for so long. The carnage is absolutely incredible as now LTTE is handing weapons to older/younger people who have had no proper battle training. When LTTE says civilians as dying they refer to these people who are fresh recruits (Achchi and baby brigade)

Solution I am going to describe is little different, but they do work. Idea here is, we have to use sound instead of heat, take a sensitive microphone, it can detect tiniest-to-big sound and air pressure, so if we have array of those mic-s then we can feed that in to a filtering stage of amplifier then to a radar (oscilloscope)
Then install a database with all knowing recoded sounds from air crafts, tincan etc – we can download them from zling (tincan) factory. If we find the mach yaaha we got the sucker.
Using this method we can detect them b4 or after takeoff low/high flying.
Not only that,, we can detect snipers and other threats too.
All you need is good electronic Engineer/Technician, little money.

Even though the ratio was roughly 1:10, we effectively communicated that there is a contesting view, bearing -15 freezing cold and a rather discouraging scene unfolding in front of us in the ellipse square facing the White House in DC on the 20th.

I am sending this e-mail after taking action in response to a forwarded e-mail I received. Even if you are unable to do the needful before the hearing, you may still send a letter to the member senators at your earliest as our opinions do matter to our representatives.
As you may (or not) know, there is a hearing on Tuesday, Feb 24th at 2.30 pm by the Senate Foreign Relations Committee on recent developments in Sri Lanka. The committee is chaired by senator John Kerry. There are 3 witnesses -- Anna Neistat (human rights watch), Bob Dietz (Committee to protect journalists) , and Jeff Lunstead (former US ambassador to SL).
From what we see/hear, LTTE supporters are trying everything known to mankind to stop the 'humanitarian mission' to liberate Tamil civilians from Tigers. Out of the three witnesses above, the first two are not likely to give a positive picture of Sri Lanka if you go by their past record. So, it's up to us to let the members know what we know already.

I took some time last night to write my thoughts and sent it to all 18 of these senators (one letter but separate copies addressed to each of them and sent it to the address found in the 'Contact Information' link).
The guidelines they suggest when writing to them (as per their websites) are as follows:
1. Keep it short and do not write more than a page (if you were to print it).
2. Write your real name and address and sign the letter (anonymous letters are routinely discarded).
3. Start by indicating what you are writing about.
4. State each of your concerns in paragraphs.
5. End the letter by urging some action (what you would like them to do about the issue).
Here are some points that I elaborated in my letter (ok, I must confess that I ended up with two pages though :)
1. Introduce yourself as a Sri Lankan American who visit Sri Lanka frequently due to family ties. (business/leisure/ ... whatever that applies to you) and as someone very concerned about the situation of your country of origin.
2. Express your appreciation for the concern they show towards Sri Lanka by holding the hearing.
3. Let them know that Sri Lanka's war on terror is finally seeing the light at the end of the tunnel after thirty years. The separatist terrorist group LTTE are now cornered and holding thousands of civilians as a human shield against their will. Mention that if Sri Lanka succeeds in routing out terrorism, it will be a very rare achievement for any secular democracy.
4. Mention that the LTTE is one of world's deadliest terrorist groups as classified by the FBI and many other western law enforcement agencies. They are fighting to carve out a mono-ethnic separate country in the island by attempting to suicide bomb the country in to submission. They have a support network of dedicated individuals who mostly live in the west who also subscribe to the separatist project of the LTTE.

Mayhem in South India and Its Impact on Sri Lanka
Earlier last week Pranab Mukerjee, External Affairs Minister and Acting Finance Minister of India, made a brave statement in the Indian parliament by saying that the LTTE is a terrorist organization and that they are responsible for the misery of Sri Lankan Tamils during the last thirty years. There was an instant uproar and the LTTE gallery was calling for his blood. Later this week, as the Sunday Times puts it, Pranab did a complete sumersault. He is now calling for negotiations between the Govt of Sri Lanka and the LTTE. Today Pranab was interviewed by a TV reporter on India Now who solicited his views on Pakistan's Govt entering into a permanent ceasefire with the Taliban in the Swat Valley, With a sanctimonious face Pranab said "India is very concerned about this situation and that India does not negotiate with terrorists." Wow ! Two sumersaults in one week.
According to the Sunday Times, the U.S. Pacific Command has offered logistics support to evacuate Tamil civilians and some sort of team from that entity may already be in Sri Lanka. It seems Pranab too is coming to Sri Lanka in two weeks. I don't think the Indians want the Americans in their back yard especially after they have made similar unsolicited offers to Sri Lanka. I would not be surprised if Pranab puts a stop to this matter when he makes his unwelcome visit to Sri Lanka.
In a related development, there is mass chaos in Tamil Nadu courts. Dr Subramaniam Swamy, Leader of the Janata Dal party (he is also a practicing lawyer), attempted to appear in court only to be thrashed by a group of pro-LTTE lawyers in the presence of the judge and the police. It is said that due to the lawyers strikes the courts have only functioned for ten days this year.
The day after the Swamy incident police arrested 15 lawyers involved in that matter, and it looks like all hell has broken loose since then. The lawyers have burnt a police station and vandalized cars. In turn the police have lathi charged them (the lathi is the long cane stick used by Indian police), destroyed some of the lawyers vehicles, and cracked a few skulls in the process. Today the Chief Justice of India K. G. Balakrishnan (who is also Tamil) called for calm. The head of the lawyers association interviewed on TV today said that the only way they will stop is if all of the top cops from the DGP are arrested and remanded, and if their jailed colleagues are arrested.
I would not be surprised if the lawyers strikes and other incidents (yesterday another lunatic set himself on fire and killed himself) in Tamil Nadu are instigated by the LTTE and their supporters who hope that the Indian Govt will turn the screws on the Sri Lanka Govt and thereby give the LTTE some relief.

I don’t think senate committee hearings on the 24th of February, USA will do any harm to war against terrorists. However, there is a strong possibility of SLG would be criticized heavily for media interference and controls along with human right violations.
Having said that, they better be remembered how Bush administration treated human rights after 9/11 incident. Americans have no rights to criticize anybody now on war against terror and human rights. Therefore they may come down heavily on violation of media rights.
On the same token most of our media people are far away from western media when it comes to journalism.

More LTTE Finds Reported
MULLAITTIVU: 57 DIVISION troops in a search in the general area of VISUAMADU Sunday (22) recovered a large haul of LTTE arms and ammunition left behind by fleeing Tigers.
The recovery made from a suspected LTTE one time arms production factory included one hundred and fifty 81 mm mortar bombs, two hundred and fifty mortar bombs trails, one hundred and fifty boxes of iron balls, fifteen rolls of aluminum cable, thirty-five thousand 12.7 ammunition empty cases, ten thousand 12.7 ammunition heads/noses, forty-one 130 mm mortar projectiles, one pistol magazine, one hundred and twenty-six 9 mm pistol rounds of ammunition, twenty-three barrels of diesel, twenty-nine barrels of kerosene, twelve hand grenades, three T-56 weapons, five Motorola Base station communication sets, eighty I-com sets, fourteen 81 mm bombs, one hundred and ninety-five 81 mm mortar bomb trails, two hundred and fifty claymore mine double leg stands, seventy-one claymore triple leg stands, five Bangalore Torpedo explosive devices, one 2.5 kg land mine, one 5 kg land mine, 288 kg of TNT explosives, two trapped 81 mm bombs, one thousand plastic mine covers, thirty-three claymore mines, thirty pressure mines, twenty patrol bombs, 10 kg of C-4 explosives, one computer, one Ashok Leyland truck, one Ashok Layland lorry, ten 60 mm mortar bombs and five LTTE made Arul mortar bombs.
An attempt by a group of LTTE cadres belonging to their attack group to infiltrate the general area of VATTAPPALAI, MULLAITTIVU was thwarted by 59 Division troops Sunday (22) killing all terrorist infiltrators on the spot. In the search following assault, troops recovered four terrorists dead bodies along with three T-56 weapons, one assault rife with a silencer, one magazine, twelve hand grenades, two military packs, one I-com set, forty-two dry ration packets, and fourteen packets of biscuits.
Meanwhile, 58 Division troops in their advance deeper in to PUTHUKKUDIYIRUPPU east also recovered one LTTE dead body, one I-com set and one T-56 weapon Sunday (22) following confrontations with terrorists.
In the meantime, Task Force – V troops in a search in the general area of PANDIYANKULAM recovered one 122 mm artillery round and one more LTTE made mortar bomb.
Two more 81 mm bombs and one Rocket Propeller Grenade (RPG) bomb were also recovered by Task Force – VII troops in the general area of MUHAMALE the same day.

Claim: Tamils are discriminated in Sri Lanka
Fact: A person from the majority Sinhalese cannot buy a piece of land in
the North (prevented by a pact), but the Tamils can buy land anywhere in
the country. Statistically speaking, Tamils are occupying more than their
share in universities, in the civil service, the government and even in
the private sector. From Sea Street to 4th Cross Street , there are
certain
trades and industries that "belong" to the Tamils, and no Sinhala or
Muslim merchant can penetrate that. A closer look at the transformation of
Colombo and its suburbs will make any pea-brain understand who is having
a
better life and who is being pushed aside from the capital city. From
Paskaralingam to Kadirgamar to Muralitharan, there are millions of Tamils
who have flourished in this country. It is the Sinhala students who cannot
attend the Jaffna University or the Eastern University , while the Tamil
students enjoy their rights all over the country, including the Peradeniya
University in the heartland of the Sinhala Buddhists. Even in Colombo , a
Sinhala student is not admitted to any Tamil school, while all the Sinhala
schools accept Tamil students.
From education, to civil service, to businesses and private sector, to
land-ownership in Colombo – Tamils are enjoying more than their fair
share. How would it be possible if there is so-called discrimination
against Tamils in Sri Lanka ?
Claim: Sri Lankan regime has failed to take care of the North and the East
Fact: Jaffna had been almost on par with Colombo at one time, a thriving
cosmopolitan – the second capital of Sri Lanka – before the troubles
began. There are many provinces and districts that have been forgotten by
the ruling parties – North and East aren't at the top of that list. Uva,
for example did not even have a university until 2 or 3 years ago;
Moneragala district is the most deprived in the entire country. The
governments have always favoured the Tamils – in order to keep their
votes, and as a result, they have been enjoying better benefits than the
others in Sri Lanka .
Claim: Tamils get hassled and harassed by the security checks
Fact: The Sinhalese, the Muslims, the Burghers – we all get woken up in
the wee hours of the morning, during search operations; we all get our
bags, baggage and vehicles checked, we all get harassed – that's the price
the innocent people pay for the environment the stupid LTTE has created.
Anyone who fails to produce valid identification or reasonable evidence
for whereabouts would get into trouble – unless you are a foreigner (they
are the privileged ones in paradise). There are Sinhala and Muslim
informants on the LTTE payroll too, so everyone is a 'suspect' at a
checkpoint. We all go through the same hassle, same agony. But then again,
you hardly visit Sri Lanka , so what would you know?
Claim: Sinhalese Buddhists are at War with the Tamils
Fact: Nope, we aren't. If we did, there wouldn't have been any Tamils
living outside LTTE-controlled areas. Majority of the Tamil population is
living outside the LTTE grip; living amongst the other ethnicities in
harmony. Government of Sri Lanka (GoSL) is at war with the terrorists,
just like some other democracies around the world. Some LTTE propaganda
agents substitute GoSL with Sinhalese Buddhists and LTTE with the Tamils,
to leverage certain situations in their favour.
Claim: Some Sinhala Extremist Parties are spreading Sinhala-only
ideologies
Fact: Yes, there are extremist elements such as Jathika Hela Urumaya (JHU
trans. National Sinhala Heritage) – which came to being to counter the
extremists such as the LTTE under a political mandate. Tamil extremism is
over 50 years old in Sri Lanka while JHU isn't even 10 years old. JHU,
being an extremist, has almost zero influence on the average civil
society. Tamils, on the other hand, have "erased" Sinhala from their areas
(only Tamil and English exist on the sign boards from the North – out of
sight, out of mind?) while the rest of the country treats Tamil as one of
the official languages.
Now, who is being extreme and who is breeding extremism in this country?
Claim: Sri Lankan Government has no option but to negotiate with the LTTE
Fact: Sri Lankan Government did not negotiate with the Sinhala Buddhist
uprisings in the early 70's and the late 80's. The Sinhala terrorists were
captured, tortured and killed – and their heads decorated the roadside
fences. Their burning bodies were seen in almost every street corner every
morning, and over 50,000 youth are still missing to date. That was the
Sinhala Buddhist government taking care of the Sinhala Buddhist youth who
terrorised the country. The government does NOT have to negotiate with
terrorists. The Sri Lankan governments have been too nice, and tolerant,
to the Tamil terrorists all these years.
Claim: The international community has a right to involve in the Sri
Lankan situation
Fact: The international community has already banned the LTTE – a terror
outfit and its sister-concerns. Not even India can ecourage terrorism or
division anymore; they too have Mumbai and Kashmir on their agenda. Sadly,
it is only a few misguided Tamil businessmen and individuals who support
the LTTE around the world trying to lobby a voice for lost cause – they
hardly quantify or qualify as the "international community." BBC and the
gullible British elements don't qualify either. You too will soon see the
truth and realise that the Ealam dream was nothing but a painful
nightmare.
Claim: LTTE is the only and true voice of the Tamil people
Fact: LTTE does not represent the true Tamils of this country. If they
did, why would they eliminate EPRLF, EPDP, EROS and TULF? Weren't they
representing Tamils too? Why would they kill any Tamil voice that was
against the LTTE agenda – no matter how big or small the person was? From
innocent villagers who were labelled as "traitors" to great statesmen like
Lakshaman Kadirgamar, LTTE has killed thousands of its own kith and kin
that they were "supposedly" protecting. In fact, the LTTE has killed more
innocent Tamils than the number of LTTE militants killed by the Sri Lankan
Security Forces. LTTE is not the true voice or the protector of the Tamils
in Sri Lanka . It's just the opposite.
Claim: LTTE is protecting the civilians in their area, if they get out,
they would be killed by the Sri Lankan Security Forces. (Also according to
LTTE and the BBC)
Fact: Almost all the Tamils in Sri Lanka – except for the ones who are
trapped in the current War Zone – live outside the LTTE influence. How
come they are not killed? If over 90% of the Tamils are living outside the
LTTE held areas, in harmony with the rest of the Sri Lankans, protected
and freely, what are they talking about? They would be killed by the
military advance if they DON'T leave the LTTE-held areas soon enough.
Claim: Sri Lanka failed to recognise the demands of the Tamils and never
offered a political solution
Fact: Sri Lanka did, but sadly the Tamils didn't recognise the power they
had in their hands. The country switched from a 225-seater parliament that
represented an MP per electorate to the Provincial Council System to
satisfy the demands of the Tamils. This may not have been perfect, but it
was a very good beginning. North and East were combined and offered in a
silver platter to the terrorist leader twice, but he refused to enter the
political stream. LTTE rejected democracy and took up arms, not once, not
twice, but many a times. Every "Cease-Fire" ended in LTTE regrouping,
re-arming and murdering hundreds of Sinhalese – the Tamil Diaspora that
has never set foot in the island should use their brains to understand why
the LTTE were NOT acting for the benefit of the ordinary Tamils.
Sri Lanka would have been better off without the high-maintenance
Provincial Council System – with a leaner, meaner, accountable and more
responsible Parliament. Today we have a white elephant – created for the
Tamils, but fed by the rest of the Sri Lankans.
We were a resourceful nation in South Asia, ahead of Singapore on the
development curve, once upon a time. Thanks to the idiotic ideologies and

win the war and restore peace and stability, but we cannot gain the time
we lost. We cannot turn back the clock. The world has moved on, leaving us

Lanka. It is going to take a few heavy monsoons to wash away the crap and
the stench, and its going to be a hell of a long time before we begin to
