SLA enters Puthukudirippu built-up area

Earth bunds constructed by the Tigers to guard Puthukudirippu have fallen thanks to the newly formed TF-8, 58 Division and the 53 Division. The first bund erected across Perawil in Puthukudirippu West was completely overrun by yesterday, the second bund erected to the south of Puthukudirippu was also breached. TF-8, backed by the 53 Division, are now inside the trench and pitched battles have erupted there.

LTTE has deployed two Battle Tanks, one clearly identified by soldiers as a T-55 to counter the armoured onslaught from the SLA. Army fears the Tigers might use the tanks for a suicide mission towards the end. The forward advance is again hampered by the trapped civilians. The flow of civilians into government controlled areas had now ground to a complete halt.

Following the breach of the two earth bunds, the SLA is now in the Puthukudirippu built-up area west and south of Puthukudirippu Town Center. Puthukudirippu jungles are now behind them. Special teams trained at Maduru Oya in FIBUA or Fighting In Built-Up Areas have been deployed to capture Puthukudiirippu Town.

The LTTE, who once claimed very proudly that it doesn't fight for 'real estate', is now fighting for every inch of that same 'real estate'. Once famous LTTE leaders like Theepan, Sornam, Bhanu et al. have been relegated to defending the remaining real estate one square kilometer at a time.

The 57, which performed a herculean task in the fighting upto Kilinochchi and Task Forces 3 and 4 in Oddusudan etc. have received a well deserved break and are now placed in the reserve. Many of the high performing officers and men of these Divisions have been approved leave and a well earned rest.

Another Unit that's enjoyed relative peace during the Vanni Operation has been the Special Forces whose powerful attack teams were called in only on a handful of occasions as the other Divisions took the fight effectively to the enemy. The 59 Division, which was somewhat unsuccessful in the last battle has been placed on a defensive role to guard particularly the entry-exist routes to and from Mulaitivu by the Commander.

Folks, did you see the senate hearing on the "genocide in Sri Lanka"?

Wow, the HRW woman lied, she said "100s of civilians die everyday" - this means MORE THAN 100. this sounds enormous, over an year, this is like at least 36500 civilians, over the course of the 30 year war, it should be like 36500x30 = over one million people. They don't give periods, references, nothing, just verbal diarrhea. It is all bullshit, this is how HRW and agencies who depend on strife to keep them going in other parts of the world perpetuate violence by supporting terrorist groups. These are not humanists, but people who definitely have an agenda.

Rover said...

Factually she is correct of course. 100s of civilians die everyday, but NOT DUE TO SLA's operations. Most of them die due to natural causes (old age, disease ect). Is HRW woman trying to put even these deaths onto SLA account?

ReallyCold..... said...

@Rover
That woman set the tone for the evening and they only recovered somewhat from it.

She is a sick woman perhaps suffering from some kind of a mental breakdown.

The irony is we have people employed around the world and they had no impact on the hearing.

Diaspora views were often heard and also GR's statements were echoed few times.

We can't blame anyone else but ourselves for not representing MAJORITY of Sri Lankan views there. We were fortunate that nothing came out of that meeting as recommendations.

The misery of few unfortunate Sri Lankans shouldn't define the ship we need to navigate.

Some Tamils are born to whine and we need to ignore them.

Gringo said...

Rover,

The whole thing was a fabrication and the body language of the senators gave that clue.

In a nutshell, it was a total waste of time and yet another disappointment for the beneficiaries and benefactors of Tamil terrorists.

However, there's another bright and a sunshiney day out there... to harvest... and fry a 'reasonable' number of Tamil terrorists.

This is what I felt like as well. She was sick and blinded. Most of these humanitarian agencies do not have a screening procedure to take out the sickos. Being sick and polarized is perhaps one of the criteria to be a successful member. Pathetic huh?

"We can't blame anyone else but ourselves for not representing MAJORITY of Sri Lankan views there. We were fortunate that nothing came out of that meeting as recommendations."

Yep, this was REALLY pathetic. My only problem is the lack of our capacity to counter the UNTRUTH. If it was the truth, I wouldn't give a rat's ass about all this.

Few months ago, I had an engagement with a top diplomat and asked why there is no conscious effort from the government to counter LTTE propaganda. I showed them specific examples of youtube and wiki with some blog sites.

They said they have employed people and they are not passionate enough.

It is possible relatives of our politicians are occupying certain propaganda related positions with lavish pay yet they are unable to deliver.

50% of the war is fought oversees. Tamil diaspora from one hand write checks to LTTE and from the other hand write freedom songs for Tamils LTTE has trapped.

We are winning the war thanks mostly to brave poor Sinhalese boys.

Sujeewa Kokawala said...

Today's is a good show of pathetic and rather childish mindset of Pussycatospora.

They seem to be jubiliant. Some were spreading fresh punnakku delivered by Tamil-nut. Some are inventing their own tales. Some are trying to counter the humiliation caused by Mahen, by pretending they are Sinhala. Talk spread into an area 10 times bigger than whatever remains.

Few weeks ago there were none to be found in www.

This wavelike pattern is one prominent reason why they survived so far. Let's take an example.

If your Cricket team is doing so great and they lost this tight match with world champs, you still feel very down. And when your team is doing very bad, even a minnow beating is a day of celebration. Even a tightly contested loss.

Same goes for Pussycatopora. When they thought that Eelam has arrived, they were shot down by SLDF. Suddenly by January they had only one junction and scrubs in vicinity to take shade and lick their wounds. They were feeling down and hiding.

They sat back and thought hard, what to be done. They realized that they can market the term genocide. All of a sudden came Protests, road blocking and getting ass-kicked by UK police. Self idiotallation aka immolation and all the what not. World rocked with thalathel.

To be or not to be that is capacity max cry for eelam. Yet it gave nothing but more wounds.
In yhe agony of defeat and inferior complexity they suddenly find that remaining PTK is the glory rather than the loss. They see one town held with do-or-die battle but fail to see dozen such they lost in past few weeks.

In the contrary nothing has changed in battlegrounds. We shot down two of their planes just few days ago. In past few weeks 58th progressed past Sundarapuram to the outskirts of PTK. Regions like Ampalavanpokkanai [Ambalavanpokuna??] fell in a flash. SLDF overcame few retaliation attempts. They avoided sabotage of many types. They rescued a significant number of civilians. They killed many pussycats. If there is any change that is the SLDF casualty, but we understood and anticipated this as remaining pussycats have only their graves to withdraw tactically.

But now suddenly the wounded cats are back here. Rocking this site will thrill and triumph. Achieved nothing but voice is huge. Celebrations are on for victories unknown and mythical.

At a time the pussycats cannot ever think of roaring, a faint meow or even a smelly fart keeps them celebrating. Primitive psycho-heads. We pity you.

Rover said...

ReallyCold,

"They said they have employed people and they are not passionate enough."

This is quite true. People like us have to do their job for them, while doing other jobs.

"We are winning the war thanks mostly to brave poor Sinhalese boys."

Yep, the middle-class hasn't contributed much to this war; given that Sri Lanka has a huge middle-class, this is a problem. The poor guys have to sacrifice disproportionately.

Govt. has won the war so far because the right people were given the right jog, on the military front.

But they are unfortunately not doing this on all fronts. This is quite a concern. We should never let unsuitable persons to assume positions of power. THey not only do not get their job done, but also try to prevent other skilled guys from reaching higher levels. This creates a double-negative effect which is quite inimical to the rapid development of our country. In fact, I am hoping to write a note on this on my blogspot soon.

NOLTTE=Peace said...

Rover,

I believe that the politicians employing unqualified stooges to do the media jobs is the issue.

There is a Minister call "Media Minister" (laugh of this century), but Prof Rajiva Wijesekara and Dayan Jayatilleke have to go and rescue Sri Lanka from every Media Malfunction of the country.

This is a really pathetic situation.

Island Editor alone is doing several-fold more than our "Media Ministry".

Rover said...

"Island Editor alone is doing several-fold more than our "Media Ministry"."

Yes, NoLTTE=Peace, "media ministry" is a joke. They only need ONE good guy to do an effective job. ONE good counter propaganda article per day would do. But even this is not forthcoming. Yes, pathetic.

Tamil Net Reports ...

No neogitiations with Tigers even if they lay down arms - SL Premier

-------
Why don't they think before they shit like this. This is going to be bad press for SL. The govt. should really be careful of what they say in these last few days of the operation. The more presure our govt. gets, more pressure on our poor soldiers who have to pay for this kind of stupidity with their lives.

As the previous comments suggests, it is very important that we have a really got set of people doing the govt. PR. Even if we destroy the tigers, we have a long way to go to get our image back up. Being painted as SL chauvanists is not good when we try to deal with the west (Hypocritical MFs) that we have to live with.

One of the big mistake Chandrika did was not giving the post of Prime Minister to our beloved Kadiragamar and giving it to the most safest bet Ratnasiri -who is an utterly useless person to the country (yes, he is a very useful person to the party).

If Kadir was the Prime Minister, his life would be saved and the country would be in a much more better place.

At that time, other than the LTTE, whole Sri Lanka was ready to see Kadir being our Prime Minister. Even the JHU wanted Kadir as the Prime Minister. Our un-luck!

Thusitha said...

Yeah, we need bit young smart people running the country than these old guys. Yeah, very sad about Kadira. He was really good at communicating and winning over people. Wish we have another Tamil leader like that. It is not a bad Idea to give a PM ship to some one similar.

Re: Political Disruptions within Universities

Thusitha, Sujeewa, and others:

Very good discussion and suggestions, except the tyre solution (LOL) and the total closing of Arts Faculties(!).

1. Yes, indeed, as Thusita pointed out, universal free education in Sri Lanka is easily the best thing about the Country. This includes Univ. education. The high literacy engendered by free education since SWRD's time, is the main reason I feel confident that Sri Lanka can quickly transform itself into an Economically Powerful country, without social discord, after the war, unlike the largely illiterate India. But, free university education is an INVESTMENT even citizens who do not go to the university make on behalf of progress of the country as a whole. So, to give meaning to the sacrifices that even those who do not directly enjoy the benefits make to produce the educated future leaders of the country, universities must be MADE TO FUNCTION WITHOUT DISRUPTION.

2. The disruptions seem to be related to two things: A. Some students don't feel that they have anything at risk. For example, they have not paid for it; instead others are paying for it; they are there only for a good romp at the end of which they receive a gold embossed certificate as a university graduate, having learned nothing. B. They have no expectation of getting a job when they graduate. So there is no value added, from their viewpoint, to the course of studies they are pursuing; so why take it seriously?

3. Sujeewa's idea of reducing enrollment in Arts (Humanities) stream early at the GCE O/L and A/L stages, and then at the university level is good. We should produce only those graduates for whom there will be decent employment. We don't need to produce regiments of revolutionaries.

4. On the other hand, I know there is great value in Arts, Cultural Humanities studies. An engineering education will pay bills and provide employment, but the ability to write, sing, think, philosophize, and debate yields humanistic and leadership qualities essential to life itself in a civil society. Without people trained in these fields where will the next generation of Amaradeva's, Ananda Guruge's, K.N. Jayatileke's , Martin Wickremasinghe's come from? When we debate and espouse Patriotism...who are we quoting? whose songs are we singing? whose plays are we raving about? who is going to be the next generation of journalists, reporters and writers of historical novels? No, the Humanities must be fostered, but not to the extent that we produce reams of unemployed "viplavakarayas". Therefore, as Sujeewa says, we should reduce the Arts stream numbers and produce more accountants, lawyers, doctors, engineers, physicists, business administrators and so on, but not entirely eliminate the Humanities stream.

5. Sujeewa also advocates enforcing the law of the land within universities; This is essential I think. Universities ought not to be sovereign countries all unto themselves. In fact, as others have advocated here, I would go more in the opposite direction and prohibit political demonstrations, unions, and political activities of any sort on the university premises. At most, issues related to university academic policy, residential issues, etc should be allowed in protests by students. All non-university related issues should be taboo within the university; in that respect the university regulations would restrict the freedoms normally available under the laws of the land.

6. Punishments for transgressions against university policies should be fair, and meted out swiftly by the university administration, and not be countermanded by government. Punishment for violation of the civil laws of the land should be decoupled from university penalties, but enforced in addition to them.

7. Ragging has no place in universities, and should be totally prohibited with both university and civil law penalties against violators. When I was a Peradeniya student, ragging was the custom, especially in the dorms, practiced on the freshmen who in turn inflicted it on others. I did not feel then that it was an undue burden, but I feel it is of no intrinsic value, can often exceed safe limits, and should be banned.

8. What about academic freedom of university professors? I feel it should be protected, within the limits of university policy and civil law of the land. University administrators, in turn should be prevented from pursuing political agendas on the campus.

My two cents worth!

Re: Political Disruptions within Universities

------
I really understood the value of free education in Sri Lanka when I worked few years in South America. Even with such level of poverty compared to some of the countries in South America, Sri Lankan poor were much better off than these people. The main reason was some one poor in Sri Lankan can dream of becomning rich through eduction where as non of these guys ever can get out of poverty as only the rich can educate themselves.

The curse of the universities is that the law of the land does not apply within them. We should get rid of these.

Students or lectures have political aspirations they should do it outside the university and if this not the case they should be punished swiftly.

I am not sure about the humanities. We need good thinkers, but thinking alone doesn't allow you to survive in the real world. I am bit stump on a solution to this one, but humanities are the real reason for most of the problems in our universities. We have too many revolutionaries there and there doesn't seem to be any simple solution to stoping them protesting all the time.

From my observation, infiltrated LTTE teams can attack soft targets such as IDP camps. They are dressed like SL forces and it could be a preferred choice for them than attacking SL forces. At this stage they cannot win with the forces and try to use external pressure IC or TN to the maximum. IDPs left without LTTE consent so they might prefer to kill them and use them to their advantage.
