The Army suffered a setback last weekend when around 600 hardcore LTTE cadres infiltrated the FDL of the Army's 58 Division from the general area Puthukudirippu North. A group of around 200 cadres who attempted to flank the 55 and 58 were massacred by 3 Special Forces and 2 Commandos after the 55 Division spotted them early on.
Although Military Intelligence had warned of a possible infiltration, the 58 Division had not taken the warning seriously. The 600 member LTTE team was led by Lawrence and Swarnam and around 200 of them had escaped back to LTTE dominated areas after dismantling the 58 FDL. It is believed that the body of Lawrence is among those recovered by the SLA.
A group of around 200 more are still inside SLA dominated areas. Troop movement along the A-9 has stopped due to fear of attacks on soldiers returning on leave. The 58 was unable to bridge the broken FDL until the Special Forces and the 57 Division arrived.
Today a team of Tigers from the infiltration team captured an Army Artillery Gun Position and destroyed 3 130mm canons after turning the guns against the SLA. The Tigers had infiltrated 10-12km into SLA dominated areas to capture the position, which is situated near the former IDP camp in Kilinochchi where a woman suicide bomber blew herself up some time ago.
The Army had 200 casualties on the 7th alone, which included 70 killed. After helping the 58 regroup from its setback, the Special Forces will now hunt the Tigers down, which will be somewhat difficult as they are wearing SLA uniforms and reinforced by weapons and food dumps yet unrecovered by the 58. Many were expecting the LTTE to breach the coast from Nagarkovil to Puthumathalang by sea but the 55 Division had made the coastline unbreachable.

LTTE attacks 58 and 55 FDL`s the true stroy in a nutshell

Well folks from what it seems you know most of the news. Some of you have even seen the recent article on DW about LTTE actions.
Well what you saw on TV was true. But only the details are beginning to emerge and that from a very robust intelligence analysis.
I am posting this to educate some people who seem oblivious to our victories against LTTE are hard come.
On the night of March 5th 55 div started moving southward passing the chalai FDL`s crossing the short lagoon opening. In the meantime 58 began moving its strike force remnants along an east south axis but leaving gaps between strike force III elements.
LTTE countered this operation due to a number of factors of which most importantly because if the operation if succeeded would end LTTE land sea access and severely hamper its future operation base.
LTTE massed a large group of cadre consisting about 300 IP/R regiment hardcore, and about 400 recent recruits who doubled up as civilians. They moved about 100 odd ip/r with another 200 civilians and divided the rest to groups of 30 with individual responsibilities. The chores included breaking through set FDL`s digging weapons caches and then attacking 58 from the rear guard. As a diversion to move 58 toward east flank LTTE inducted Swarnam and asked him to lead the group which was subsequently ambushed by 55 and 58 SLI.
Little known about 100 cadre had managed to breakthrough 58th and SF III fdl`s reach rear fire support bases, they managed to kill the arty units manning those areas and turn the guns towards EP/Muhamali. The goal of this was that if the group lead by swarnam had succeeded they could reach ep and capture the strong points thus giving them the needed fire support.
Finally when everything was under control 57 had to utilize its commando brigades, and LTTE had managed to infiltrate wilpatthu/mankulum forest reserves (two very different areas).
I will not post the losses of 58. LTTE used the time that many commanders were on leave and only low key operations were being planned to attack.
As we all know, VP is very good at attacking STATIC targets, this has been the strongest point in LTTE`s military victories against sla. if the hunter is passive it becomes the pray.
listening to foreign media and governments while slowing down offensive operations only leaves LTTE the opportunity to strike back. LTTE is now awaiting a large consignment of Anti air missiles of the type SA18A series which were purchased in a nearby country.
What is baffling is that 58th CO and XO were given advanced intelligence of LTTE strike force (freaking Visually cited) and detected by ground radar at least 3 days in advanced. Our operatives in the refugee camps in LTTE manned civilian zones saw how they trained for weeks and prepared rations in advance of this operation.
If this what LTTE has to throw at SLA and this is the best, it may come too late and short. It was perhaps to hit three Sixers of the last ball of the match hoping the next two balls were no balls.
So the responsibility is on our side to make sure we do not make blunders of this caliber. LTTE did not gain anything from this operation except more time at the cost of at least 300 of their well trained men.

For offensive; you select time, location and fighters and you use your best, at least better fighters than defensive guys. You did not run to him because you did not like vomit he tried to console me.
I said to him, "That is the point. Because of your compassion you overcame your Tamil apathy. But this humanistic Internationalist could not overcome his vomit apathy. YOU ARE REALLY A GOOD PERSON, PLEASE TRY TO BEHAVE like your True self.
There after he was so kind our Tamil Lab mate.

Remember this was not a solo effort 57 was facing the brunt of the the tiger strength which sort of helped 58 to move quickly. What is done is done if SS had made a mistake lets hope he learns from it and moves forward.It is human to err. “Calling a spade, a spade”: Lanka hit by global crisis, needs help
That the harsh realities of the global crisis impacting on Sri Lanka have now been acknowledged by the government is a noteworthy factor, according to the Lead Economist at LirneAsia Dr. Harsha De Silva. He made these observations following the Central Bank’s announcement on Wednesday of a potential loan in the form of a stand-by arrangement in the range of 300% of Sri Lanka’s current quota with the IMF, which amounts to approximately US$1,900 million ($1.9 billion).
He observed: “I am indeed glad to note that senior government officials have finally agreed with the critics that Sri Lanka needs IMF assistance. Ironically it was only literally last week that the Central Bank issued a statement that its swap deals and the Diaspora bond programme was expected to build our reserves to a "very comfortable level" before long. What is sad is that this realization took so long, and in the process, investor confidence in Sri Lanka eroded and our sovereign rating outlook was downgraded.”
In line with other views received by the Daily FT from the business sector, Dr. de Silva commented “It is still not too late to undertake a realistic assessment to determine the true impact of the oncoming global economic crisis on Sri Lanka to take appropriate steps. It is far better to be prepared to face reality; however harsh it is, than to pretend we are insulated from the global fallout and pride ourselves by presenting external reserve figures that overstate the actual amount when using accepted measurement indicators.”
The extent of the terms and conditions that are expected from the IMF with this loan are yet not public. However, Dr. de Silva speculated on a possible scenario: “I am not privy to the conditions the IMF will impose on the Government to provide the facility, but I believe they would require the Government to maintain an exchange rate that would reflect market conditions. In my view we should not look at it negatively, but consider it an opportunity to improve the macroeconomic position of the country. Maintaining a market exchange rate will not only have a major positive impact on exports but also help to slow imports and thereby improve the deteriorating balance of payments position.”
He offered some cautionary sentiment before any euphoria on an IMF “fix” for the country’s woes. “While I agree that the IMF bailout will be a strength going forward, Sri Lanka is not fully out of the woods yet because the sum of the expected current account deficit and the short term debt repayment obligations including contingent liabilities particularly with regard to the Ceylon Petroleum Corporation would still be as high as or even greater than the new level of reserves. Thus, this is good time to consider the reasons for the large macroeconomic imbalances we face in this country and re-start the stalled dialogue on the reform agenda to put Sri Lanka back in contention to leverage from global trade that will recommence by next year the latest. Who knows the government may agree with the critics on that too.”
Inconsistent messages by government
Meanwhile, in its latest round of public justifications, the government has reformulated its stance such that “The availability of an IMF facility for balance of payments support at this time would help to supplement the Government’s efforts to stabilize the external sector performance of the country, and enable the country to face the times ahead with greater confidence and certainty. Such funds would be used to finance the new needs as well as to bridge any gap that may arise due to the global financial crises.”
The GOSL has further explained that the current global financial conditions are not conducive for any country to mobilize the required level of essential external financing, and that Sri Lanka is no exception. Yet, it was not long ago that the public were given this message in our own DM FT Interview (February 4th 2009,FT):

DM FT Question: “Are we seeking IMF assistance to bail us out of our current foreign currency position?”
Central Bank Answer: “No. We do not need such assistance. I know there has been a time in our history when the IMF representative in Colombo was the person who decided on economic policy in Sri Lanka. That was in the past. Today, it is different. Very soon you will see the outcomes of our new and innovative policy actions and then you will know why we did not need the IMF”.
Clearly Mr. Cabraal is a man for all seasons, and just possibly only as well informed as we are. The IMF too has its own chequered past in assisting and imposing terms especially on developing nations. But credit goes today to a government that has at least now tested the winds. In so far as its media messages to the public go, consistency in what is said to the public would further help enhance the much needed investor and internal economic confidence that we all need so badly.
Our soldiers are brave compare to other countries. I saw 3 times how they act when they detect suspicious vehicles parked on the road. Kisima bayak naha.. nirbeethai.. vishistai.. I salute all of you brave heats.

If we remember this simple truth, no body has to argue as to what 58th has done.
