Heavy fighting continues in an area roughly the size of a square kilometer in Puthukudirippu, ahead of the no-fire zone. Task Force 8, the 58 and also the 53 took the brunt of a massive artillery and mortar attack almost carpeting the small area covered in coconut trees during the last two days. Though casualties are reported exact numbers are not available at this time.
Any further advances into the no-fire zone will take time as the Army cannot use its heavy firepower while the Tigers use all the fire power they can muster from gun positions situated inside IDP settlements.
The flow of civilians was continuing steadily until today when only 90 civilians reached Army controlled areas due to the massive shelling from the LTTE. As the week progresses more civilians are expected to come into government areas. So far around 55,000 civilians have returned to government areas. No agency has accurate estimates of the numbers still trapped in the no-fire zone.
Meanwhile the LTTE's cream has started abandoning the organization. The Director of the LTTE's Vanni Institute of Technology (VIT) surrendered to the Army a few days ago. A former Assistant Lecturer at the University of Peradeniya, the VIT Director graduated from the same school as a Computer Engineer and was later recruited by the LTTE while visiting his wife in the Vanni.

After weeks of intense fighting SLA has finally conquered PTK and sent remaining tigers into the refuge of No Fire Zone. During tiger elimination process scores of tigers perished along with their frontline leaders. Curfew imposed by tigers in the CSZ for civilians has helped to eliminate more tigers in the CSZ by SLA Commando Regiment 1 & 2 along with Special Forces.
What defencewire has posted here is fairly a true account 36 hours ago. But tigers have lost their final km outside CSZ since.
55th Division has successfully broken into tiger defences in northern tip of the CSZ and established their defences in Putumatalam.Teams of CR and SF carries raids into tiger hideouts in the area on daily basis and at times deploying heavy armour to take stubborn target. Snipers are well deployed around CSZ to take targets that hinders civilians.
SLA moving into CSZ without firing heavy armour with the intension of clearing any obstructions forcefully if needed to rescue civilians held forcefully. VP along with 3 other leaders who are holed 2 km SW of Puthumathalm has simply run out of options other than deploying suicide cadres to stop advancing SLA.
Navy has brought into 8 km range from the CSZ to accommodate any escaping civilians and to deter tigers from water bound.
MI reports there are 300 to 400 tigers holed up with conscripts still being trained in makeshift camps.

National Freedom Front leader Wimal Weerawansa has asked the government to sever ties with Norway following reports that the country had facilitated the contact between Holmes and KP. “We would like to know more but we have no confirmation,” said Kohona, when questioned. Other foreign ministry sources commented that if such a telephone call had been arranged by Norway, “it is extremely serious”.
“There is an Interpol arrest warrant out for KP’s arrest,” they said. “He represents a terrorist organisation and is a wanted criminal. If Norway facilitated the call, it was utterly improper of them. For John Holmes to even have conceded talking to him would have been very poor judgement on his part.”/

Russia, China and France say it’s an internal matter
The plan to take Sri Lanka to task at an informal session of the UN Security Council on Friday over the deteriorating humanitarian situation among trapped civilians in Mullaitivu proved a damp squib, with only Mexico making a statement against us, diplomatic sources said.
They said two other promoters of this extraordinary session, Costa Rica and Austria, were either silent or was not represented at all, while the EU heavyweight France had taken a similar line to Russia and China stating that it was no business of the Security Council as the matter was an internal affair of the country.
Some even predicted that Japan, a long time close friend and has been one of the largest donors of aid to Sri Lanka for many years, too would turn against Colombo at the session, but that too failed to materialise.
Sri Lanka being so concerned about this attempt to tarnish her before the world body went to the extent of even briefing the five permanent Security Council member ambassadors in Colombo on Wednesday by a high level team on the exact situation in the conflict zone. The high level team included Foreign Minister Rohitha Bogollagama, Minister of Resettlement and Disaster Relief Services Rishad Bathiudeen, Presidential Advisor and MP Basil Rajapaksa and Army Director Operations, Brig. Udaya Perera.
Sources said out of the 15 members of the Security Council only 13 were represented at the session on Sri Lanka held in the basement of the world body headquarters, and showing their general disdain for the project some had not even been represented by ambassadors and only by First Secretary level. Usually, only insignificant events are held in the UN basement like briefings to NGOs.
Instead of Sri Lanka getting a thrashing, according to diplomats, it was the LTTE that got blasted by the international community, with speaker after speaker blaming the LTTE for the plight of civilians in the north, while the UN, US and UK called for a humanitarian pause in fighting in Sri Lanka.
As a first step, UN Humanitarian Chief Sir John Holmes appealed to the LTTE “to let the civilians out in a safe and orderly fashion.”
US senior delegate Rosemary DiCarlo said, “We certainly condemn the fact that the LTTE use civilians as human shields. We call on the LTTE to lay down its arms, renounce violence and negotiate with the government.”
DiCarlo also chided Colombo for continuing to shell areas heavily populated by civilians.
Sri Lanka has repeatedly rejected the charge of attacking civilian no fire zone and military sources point out that they have been suffering unusually high rate of casualties in this last phase due to the LTTE using civilian cover to fire at them. “If it is a case of finishing what remains of this war using our heavy fire power it can be done in a matter of minutes, if not hours now,” they said. “But we are not doing any such thing because of the concern for the civilians.”
Sri Lankan Permanent Representative to the United Nations H.M.G.S. Palihakkara pointed out that the Lankan Government shared the concern about the fate of civilians and noted that Colombo had already declared a 48-hour ceasefire period once to facilitate the evacuation of civilians.
“If the LTTE is ready to let them go today, my government will agree to a modality, a pause,” he said.

Colombo (AsiaNews) - In anticipation of a decision from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) on the 1.9 billion dollar loan requested by the government of Colombo, the Sri Lankan rupee (LKR) has been seesawing at the mercy of the financial markets.
The Central Bank of Colombo has intervened to halt the devaluation of the currency, which has been weakened by greater demand for dollars and by a selloff in shares of John Keells Holdings, the largest publicly traded company on the island, which in one day has seen trading valued at 1.9 billion LKR, equal to 12 million euros.
The future of Sri Lanka's currency and economy deepens on the decision of the International Monetary Fund. The government of Mahinda Rajapaksa is negotiating a bailout package with the IMF, intended to revive the country's economy.
The markets are awaiting an agreement, but Caroline Atkinson, head of the external relations department at the IMF, says: "We don't have any date as to the conclusion of those discussions or their likely bringing to the IMF Board, and we don’t have any information yet on how much Sri Lanka will be requiring from the Fund."

Export ceramics industry on verge of collapse
The export oriented ceramic industry pleaded to the Government to loosen its tight policies on the industry with the officials claiming that the US dollar 4.8 million industry is at the brink of collapse.
Dankotuwa Porcelain Chairman/Managing Director, Sunil Wijesinha warned that the additional tax Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) on the ceramic industry has created a crisis of survival for the industry.
According to the officials, LPG price supplied by a leading LPG importer in the country depends on the Saudi Aramco prices. However, from January this year, the government had imposed a Special Government Levy (SGL) plus taxes on LPG imports. Meanwhile, in February, government had further increased SGL to Rs. 27.50. This has increased the price of LPG by 32 percent.
High Liquefied Petroleum Prices
The four main leading ceramic companies in Sri Lanka hoped that the government would reduce the SGL on LP gas before the ceramic industry collapses.
According to Managing Director of Lanka Wall Tile Ltd and Lanka Walltiles Pvt Ltd, Mahendra Jayasekara, introduction of SGL has increased local LP gas prices resulting in reduction of competition for the industry.
"This has increased our unit price. Sri Lanka is at a disadvantage, since our competitors have their own LPG resources and they also receive government subsidies, which we do not have," he said.
Jayasekara also added that the industry had to pay around Rs. 15 million per month for its energy consumption and it could not continue to pay such a large amount.
Industrialists also added that Banks and state institutions are not willing to give credit for the industry, and it could not find adequate funds to finance working capital for its existence.
Meanwhile, Wijesinha said that distortion in LPG and diesel prices have resulted in a severe negative impact on the local ceramic industry when competing with global markets.
"Artificial tax burden and distorted price mechanism for energy can cause irreparable damages."
Industrialists also added that ceramic customers are paying a premium price for Sri Lankan products due to its quality but in future due to the global economic turmoil, many of the customers would rethink placing orders in Sri Lanka.
"The world economic crisis has already effected global sales and this will be felt in Sri Lanka when we run out of export orders," Chairman/Managing Director of Midaya Ceramic Co. Ltd, D Warnakulasooriya explained.
Sri Lanka Ceramic Council also warned that due to the prevailing economic environment exports sales will decline and the industry was looking at other option if the government assists it.
Warning of unemployment
According to Sri Lanka Ceramic Council (SLCC) there are more than 5000 persons directly employed in the industry, of which many have undergone specialized training and had the expertise in ceramic manufacturing.
They warned that if the current trend continues many employed in the industry would lose their jobs increasing the unemployment rate.
Mahendra Jayasekara said ceramic companies will be compelled to curtail production in the near future until it reduces stocks to an acceptable level, "this will result in the reduction of the work force."
No need of a stimulus package, but give relief
According to SLCC, the economy over the last five years has changed dramatically. Companies have had to adapt quickly to survive. Current business strategies are planned for months not years, the Council explained.
"The conditions of the stimulus package do not take into consideration the current economic backdrop and the effect it has had on the market. This will be difficult for companies to benefit from a stimulus package," Warnakulasooriya said.
Jayasekara noted that the main qualifying criteria of having to maintain 90 percent of the previous year’s exports turnover is very unrealistic.
"The value of exports has to be equal to the corresponding quarter of the previous year. However, the volume of exports declined since October 2008 due to the global recession," he added.
He also said that Sri Lanka exports to Australia, Canada, Europe and the UK in their respective currencies. However, due to the global crisis these currencies depreciated sharply against the US Dollar and Sri Lankan Rupee since September 2008.
"This resulted in a two way scenario, the export turnover has reduced compared to the corresponding quarters of the previous years."
Meanwhile, SLCC also requested the government to devalue the Rupee in order to safe guard the export industry in the country.
It noted that the US dollar is the main currency for the industry exports and by having a higher US Dollar to Sri Lanka Rupee exchange rate, the export becomes cheaper, and the industry will be able to get better prices for its products.
"We request the Government, therefore not to interfere with the US Dollar movements and allow it to fluctuate based on market requirements," it said.

The day after the LTTE announces they destroyed 2 Sri Lankan battle tanks, the Sri Lankan army shows footage of a destroyed tank in THEIR OWN territory, and says its an LTTE tank. Do you think the LTTE drove their battle tank all the way into government territory? In the past the LTTE has always used their battle tanks several kilometers from the front lines, fired a few shots and then retreated. To think they finally decided to drive straight into the enemy territory is ridiculous.
The Sri Lankan army lost two battle tanks, and then decided to film it claiming that it was an LTTE battle tank.
