LTTE concentrated fire on the 1 kilometer its left with

Heavy fighting continues in an area roughly the size of a square kilometer in Puthukudirippu, ahead of the no-fire zone. Task Force 8, the 58 and also the 53 took the brunt of a massive artillery and mortar attack almost carpeting the small area covered in coconut trees during the last two days. Though casualties are reported exact numbers are not available at this time.

Any further advances into the no-fire zone will take time as the Army cannot use its heavy firepower while the Tigers use all the fire power they can muster from gun positions situated inside IDP settlements.

The flow of civilians was continuing steadily until today when only 90 civilians reached Army controlled areas due to the massive shelling from the LTTE. As the week progresses more civilians are expected to come into government areas. So far around 55,000 civilians have returned to government areas. No agency has accurate estimates of the numbers still trapped in the no-fire zone.

Meanwhile the LTTE's cream has started abandoning the organization. The Director of the LTTE's Vanni Institute of Technology (VIT) surrendered to the Army a few days ago. A former Assistant Lecturer at the University of Peradeniya, the VIT Director graduated from the same school as a Computer Engineer and was later recruited by the LTTE while visiting his wife in the Vanni.

"A total of 332 Tamil civilians who were forcibly detained by the LTTE terrorists in no fire zone were managed to escape the terror grip and reached security forces in general area Iranamadu yesterday, 29 March.

The group comprising 94 males, 105 females, 68 male children and 65 female children among the escapees"

if the national average is applied, there should be (65+105)*0.95 = 162 males.

162=68+94.

perfect!!

so this means this latest batch of ppl,

1. have no family members in the LTTE who were left behind, OR,

2. almost an equal number (0.95:1.00 to be precise) of females and males in the LTTE.

the males to female ratio in the LTTE has always been MANY more males than females so #2 is not a possibility.

this means #1. however, LTTE will keep its cadres WELL DISTANCED from their family members now for OBVIOUS reasons.

this leaves only one possibility.

LTTE has stopped their agressive forceful recruitment campaign now. may be tigers are now giving up on having as bigger a force as possible.

this i guess is a QUIET turning point. (when turning points are against the LTTE or ranil's UNP they are generally quiet.)

compared to WB, ADB, IMF that are mostly concerned about imposing their BS on the govt and don't care about developing our SMEs, the above group has done some good work.

they co-operate with the relevant ministry.

the amount of support is very small but still its valuable.

we will lose this if we are expelled BUT there is no reason to betray national interests just to remain in the commonwealth. no way!

britain didn't do that bcos SL didn't fall into a category that requires expulsion or suspension.

Sri Lanka: School principals protest in Colombo over pay claim
By Panini Wijesiriwardane
31 March 2009

More than 1,500 public school principals marched and protested outside the Ministry of Education (MOE) in Colombo on March 25 to demand an end to longstanding salary anomalies. The demonstration brought together Sinhala, Tamil and Muslim school heads across the ethnic divide that has been deepened by the government's ongoing communal war.

A section of the principals’ protest

As part of the protest, 200 principals handed over symbolic resignation letters to press for their demands. In their letters, they call on the education ministry to put them in their previous position as teachers, who receive higher wages than principals.

Backed by a heavy police presence, the officer-in-charge repeatedly threatened the principals with arrest under the country's emergency laws, accusing them of supporting "Tiger terrorists". The principals, members of the Association of Educational Professionals (AEP), ignored the threats and continued their demonstration.

The government has previously exploited its war against the separatist Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) to crack down on striking workers and protests by students and farmers, claiming they were aiding the enemy.

About 3,000 school principals—one third of the total number—have threatened to resign if the government does not resolve their problems. The Grade One Principals Union did not support the protest as its higher-level members are not affected. The Grade Three Principals Union, which is affiliated to the ruling Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP), also did not take part.

Protesting principals told the WSWS that they had received no increments since 1991. Their monthly salary has stagnated at between 18,000 to 24,000 rupees (approximately $US175 to $225). Some would be entitled to 600,000 rupees in arrears if the increments to which they are entitled were paid. Over the same period, the cost of living index has skyrocketted from 1,131.5 in 1991 to 5,416 in 2007.

School heads have been given extra responsibilities, but fewer funds. Their monthly allowance has been frozen at 500 and 300 rupees according to their grade. Their travelling allowance has also been limited and their entitlement to buy a car tax free ended. To pay day-to-day expenses, most schools depend on donations from well-wishers.

A ministry letter to the union on February 27 noted that cabinet had approved a proposal on the salary anomalies and submitted it to the Public Services Commission in 2007 but had received no reply. The commission oversees the salaries of higher categories of public employees and other administrative matters.

The letter, however, is an evasion. President Mahinda Rajapakse has flatly refused to increase salaries of public employees, including teachers, on the grounds that there is no money because of the huge cost of the war.

Prior to a one-day teachers' strike in September 2007, the AEP along with the Ceylon Teachers Union (CTU) and the Ceylon Teacher Services Union (CTSU) met with Rajapakse over their salary demands. When the president asked whether they wanted him to withdraw the army from the North and East, none of the unions—including the CTU which claimed to oppose the war—were prepared to challenge him.

An unprecedented 200,000 teachers took part in the one-day protest on September 14, 2007. Incapable of waging a political struggle against the government and its war, the unions adapted to the pressure exerted by Rajapakse and ended any campaign. In October, the AEP and other unions called off a two-day strike on the basis of a worthless government promise to grant their demands by the end of 2007.

The AEP's protest last week was primarily aimed at letting off steam among its members. After handing over the resignation letters, AEP leader Wasantha Dharmasiri emphasised to the media just how moderate his union had been, saying "principals had been patient for 16 years, unlike other government servants". He claimed that another round of talks next month with the education ministry secretary represented a victory.

The government has no intention, however, of granting the demands of school principals or any other public sector workers. Having mortgaged the country to pay for his war, Rajapakse is confronting the worst global economic crisis since the 1930s. Desperate for funds to overcome a chronic balance of payments deficit, the government has been forced to turn to the IMF for a $1.9 billion loan.

While details of the loan talks have not been released, the government is already signalling its willingness to impose savage austerity measures and the IMF's free-market agenda. Earlier this month, the government passed a bill that sets the stage for the privatisation of the power sector. On March 12, it presented legislation to parliament that will open up tertiary education to private universities.

Last Thursday, government spokesman Lakshman Yapa Abeywardena announced further plans to slash public spending. Last week the Public Services Commission gazetted a series of new measures, including an efficiency test for all public sector workers that opens the door for mass retrenchments. Anyone who fails the test three times faces dismissal.

School principals and other public sector employees will not achieve their demands by pleading with and pressuring the Rajapakse government, which has already demonstrated that it will not hesitate to use police-state measures against any opposition. Workers can only defend their basic rights and living standards by unifying, opposing the war and building an independent movement based on socialist policies in the struggle for a workers and peasants government.

That is the perspective on which the Socialist Equality Party (SEP) is campaigning in the Colombo district for the Western Provincial Council elections.

I agree. If anyone wants to speak bad about our news reporters or politicians, we, as patriots, should arrange for white vans for them. If the government isn't doing it, then its the duty of patriots to do it themselves.

So what if they stole some laptops from Tamil refugees. What is a Tamil refugee doing with a laptop anyway. Better a patriot news reporter has that laptop.

Re: patriot's news report on Principals

I'd like to shed some light into few parties involved in reporting this news.

WSWS website:

This is the last stronghold of the 4th International. Being persecuted by rest of communists and killed, and being laughed at by rest of the world, 4th International lost any ground representation and ended up in cyberspace. This site is the only presence for their cult like political movement right now.

They have few components of them in SL by means of Viplavavadi Communist Sangamaya aka Vikosa aka Vikara Korannange Sangamaya. Also some ppl involved with the humorous X group are followers of this crap. None of these movements represent anything in SL. They waste a couple of uni kids future every year. Sadly not more than a handful of kids in uni "are intelligent enough" to learn heir crap. So again no harm.

SEP: Samajavadee Samanatha Pakdshaya.

These buggers went for some election in 1999/2000. Following was their published plan. I read it being printed on the party agenda [their sign was light bulb]. Chase them if they come on campaign this year. No rights reserved. Just hand them over to Angoda.

See this lunatic agenda. This is what they will do if they won that election [huh].

- Give pussycats separate homeland Eelam
- Using that TN ppl gain independence and create greater eelam
- Develop southern SL using their socialist policy
- Ppl of Eelam, seeing the improvements in south, get together in revolution and topple LTTE and join SL side to accept socialism.
- So SL+TN is under extreme socialism therefore they develop very well.
- Ppl of India revolt against govt to join SL+TN. SL+India become one socialist nation
- Ppl of Asia revolt against rulers to join that. Asia becomes one socialist nation
- Ppl of rest of the world revolt against their rulers and join Asia. Entire world become socialist single nation.

The goal of 4th international is to make the entire world one socialist nation. JHooray for the revolution. Hik hik hik.

I hope you guys can see what kind of donkeys are behind WSWS.

It is true that school principals have organized protests and there may be fair demands. But I am only worried about the messenger. This is the time to kill this lunatic messenger

- Never believe in WSWS

- Never waste your time listening to them

- Hand over these lunatics to nearest asylum

- Attack at your best to such lunatics

Desperate Tigers Play with Arty Guns, but End in Disaster

2009-03-31 14:30:11
MULLAITTIVU: Disaster struck hard on Tiger terrorists once again at about 11.30 a.m. Tuesday (31) forenoon when Tiger terrorists after bringing a 130 mm Artillery gun, as close as some 200 meters away from troop positions in PUTHUKKUDIYIRUPPU, tried to launch direct-roll fire (face to face) on the troops.

Timely preparedness and alertness of the troops however prompted action and completely destroyed the LTTE artillery gun with the help of Army artillery fire.

Army troops through technical sources well in advance learnt the movement of this LTTE artillery gun and reacted accordingly, no sooner than the LTTE artillery gun was brought and deployed.

Tiger terrorists by doing so have openly flouted standard firing practices and strategies, laid down for conventional warfare, analysts said.

Lol! I'm from Trinco. LTTE administered our street for a week in '90; thereafter, it has been under Sinhala occupation. There hasn't been a single day without at least a a dozen Sinhala soldiers patrolling our street.

Tamil Homeland does not equal areas administered by the LTTE at anyone time. If that was so, prior to '90 we would have had an even lesser area as Tamil Homeland than is now.

Army controlling territory will not make Tamil Homeland disappear.

If anything, most people are looking forward to the LTTE returning to basics. In fact, many are envious of what 'insurgents' have achieved in Afghanistan and Iraq.

Every terrorist should be killed unless they surrender and give up.

Every separatist should be punished and imprisoned.

If the government can come up with a political solution without delay the IC will not demand for a ceasefire.

I don't know about Political solution, but we need devolution of power on regional basis. That may become a political solution for those who suffered by geographically centered control.

But it has to happen long after war. These ppl haven't even eaten well for days and you're asking for a bullshit political solution.

So who would be satisfied with your suggested Political solution? Diaspora and pussycats. Wanni ppl in NFZ can't even walk straight. Let them breath first.

And in due time Northern provincial elections will be held. And I'm sure they will be happy to have their own CM for north.

People will rebel against LTTE making war easier.

Now this is not needed. And that will make more "civilian deaths" and "genocide" like in past. And Diaspora/NGO can put the blame on SLDF. This is what your guys have been doing all this long.

SLDF have taken 99.99% so trust them they'll take the last 0.01%.

Ah, GOSL is not willing to support every nonsense request of IC. We have a backbone. Only meaningful dialog is considered.

I can't understand why the government is postponing the political solution.

I can't understand why you are talking about this BS on and on.

Devolution of power will not happen according to the will of diaspora. It should happen to represent Sri Lankans.

Eastern ppl got it, so trust GOSL that north will also get it. And also trust that north will NEVER get anything more than east.

Diaspora and Pussycats, now that you lost the war, you have to accept what is given to them and shut up.

What if the ship is found to have three armed space aliens, and those aliens supply the cure for cancer to Sri Lanka, and Sri Lanka becomes the richest country in the world by selling it, and then the aliens make Mahinda president of the universe? What if that happens? What, huh?

Funniest thing would be if it was a giant suicide bomb, and Sri Lankan navy sent 15 Dvoras to escort it.

SRI LANKA HIT BY INTERNATIONAL PRESSURE

Mar 31, Colombo: Sri Lanka today said that it has withdrawn its troops from Internally Displaced Persons centers in Vavuniya, where thousands of civilians from uncleared area are housed.

According to AFP news agency Sri Lanka's Human Rights Minister Mahinda Samarasinghe said that the action has been taken in response to the pressure from the United Nations.

"We have accepted the UN recommendation and camp management has now been handed over to the Resettlement and Relief Ministry and the camps will be supervised by civil servants," Samarasinghe was quoted.

Currently there are more than 61,000 people fled from the battlefield are now residing in these camps.

How to deal with the LTTE's 'relief' ship in three easy steps

1. Stop & board the ship in SL territorial waters. Escort it under guard to Trinco.

2. Confiscate & distribute any useful supplies to civilians escaping from the NFZ and to those civilians still living in IDP camps. Arrest the ship's company, fine them for illegal entry into SL. If they can't pay the fine, straight to jail.

3. If they can pay, deport them and ensure they pay for their own airfares.

See how easy it is to deal with Eelamtards?

I can only presume that the Eelam struggle is really scraping the barrel for recruits if this sort of ill thought out relief mission is the best that can be arranged. Part of the reason is that the Eelamtards never imagined that their 'struggle' would get to this humiliating situation.

In their worst nightmares, did the Eelamtards imaging having to face a relentless GOSL and SLA that simply will not stop, whatever military and diplomatic obstacles are thrown in their path.

As I never tire of telling Eelamtards, just think of the SLA as 'The Terminator'.

"Listen and understand. The Sri Lanka Army is out there. It can't be bargained with, it can't be reasoned with. It doesn't feel pity, or remorse, or fear, and it absolutely will not stop. Ever. Until you are dead"

Two Sri Lankan Tamils in Forbes Billionaire List
We need white van now.

Two people of Sri Lankan Tamil origin were named in the Forbes Billionaire list, released on 11th March 2009. Forbes magazine presents an annual list of the world's richest people. Both are major investors in their country of origin.

Mr.T Ananda Krishnan, a Malaysian of Sri Lankan Tamil origin, was named the 62nd richest person in the world and the richest Malaysian. The 70 year-old Harvard Business School graduate's personal fortune was estimated at US$ 7 billion. He was previosly ranked 119th richest person in the world. Though Mr Krishnan has risen in the rankings, the credit crunch has taken its toll on his personal wealth. His fortune fell by US$400 million, which is a lot smaller than the losses suffered by others in the Billionaire List.

Mr. Ananda Krishnan's father Mr. Tatparanandam, a Malayan civil servant, hailed from Vaddukkodai in Northern Sri Lanka. Last year, Mr. Krishnan acquired a controlling stake in Sri Lanka Telecom for US$300 m, representing his first foray in his country of origin.

His holdings include Maxis Communications, Malaysia's largest cell-phone service provider, with more than six million subscribers; now entering the Indian cell-phone market. His Measat satellites help telecoms and broadcasters reach customers and audiences across Southeast Asia, China, South Asia and Australia. He also controls racetrack betting and lottery systems in Malaysia via Tanjong Public.Last year, he sold Excel, the exhibition venue in London’s Docklands, and bought a 20% stake in Johnston Press in London.

Mr. Raj Rajaratnam, the New York-based founder of the Galleon hedge fund, made his first appearence in the Forbes Billionaire list. He was ranked the 559th richest person, with an estimated fortune of US$1.3 billion. Mr. Rajaratnam is a major investor in the Sri Lankan stock market. The Sri Lankan-born investor recently held over 10% of the shares in John Keells Holdings, Sri Lanka's leading conglomerate. Mr. Rajaratnam is the son of David Rajaratnam, former Managing Director of Singer (Sri Lanka) and a graduate of Wharton Business School

The LTTE relief ship is NOT safe from being boarded by SLN in International Waters.

If any of you Eelamtards believed that the good ship Vanangaman is safe from being boarded in international waters, off the coast of SL, think again.

"...Under the relevant treaties, any State can board a ship on the high seas if the ship is suspected of piracy, transporting slaves, or broadcasting illegally. A ship and its occupants can be arrested for piracy and illegal broadcasting by a warship of any State."

Educate yourself here: http://tinyurl.com/6mt9hk

The GOSL can certainly make a credible case that this ship is suspected of all three of those suspect activities.

Back to the (rapidly shrinking) drawing board, for you Eelamtards.

The poor, poor Diaspora Eelamtards...

For a group of poverty stricken refugees who fled from [/begin sarcasm] a racist, genocidal Sri Lankan state [/end sarcasm], the LTTE supporting diaspora have chosen one of the swankiest venues in London to launch their 'rescue mission' ship.

Room hire charges at The Royal Horseguards range from £300 to £10,000. So let's be kind and assume £1500 for a room for a day to whinge and moan. Equipment hire, food, staff, etc .. we can add at least another £2,000.

http://www.theroyalhorseguards.co.uk/index.html

A terribly concerned Eelamtard called Arjunan Ethirveerasingam can be contacted by all LTTE-sympathetic media outlets.
UK Mobile: +44 (0) 7758649198 Email: arjunan100@yahoo.com

I hope Arjunan has a large stock of onions nearby to generate the copious amounts of tears we expect to flow at this 'launch' event.

It's always good to see how the diaspora taxes are being spent. Nice work, if you can get it, eh Eelamtards?

nice try patriot the terrorist,

What exactly is the purpose of sending white vans for Sri Lankan origin billionaires? Are they part of LTTE, I guess not? They are peaceful world citizens engaged in legitimate business, not acts of terror against the people of Sri Lanka.

FYI Tamil Sri Lankans != LTTE and LTTE != Tamil Sri Lankans.

LTTE-Maoists tie-up to disrupt Indian elections?

From Defence.lk

The LTTE is likely to join forces with India's Maoist guerillas all out to disrupt the upcoming Indian elections, The Times of India reports.

Quoting Indian central intelligence agencies the paper reports, that the effect of the LTTE support for the Maoists is expected to be felt mostly down South and Southeast though the repercussion could not be ignored in the Central India.

The full text of the report titled 'LTTE help for India's Maoists?:

The Maoists' plan to challenge the security forces during the forthcoming Indian general election may turn ominous as the former are likely to get support from various anti-national groups including a battered LTTE looking to create diversions. Sri Lanka's LTTE have been a known ally of the rebels.

In the ballot versus bullet war, government security forces would possibly have to fight grim battles to ensure that citizens do not succumb to the boycott call of the Maoists and the polling is not disrupted. Though the effect of LTTE -support, according to the central intelligence agencies, is expected to be felt mostly down south and southeast, the repercussion cannot be ignored even in the central India.

Maharashtra state Anti-Naxal Operation Cell (ANO) has already issued an alert to the adjoining states to step up their border-sealing activities to prevent 'crossing-over' and 'joint-operations' of the Naxal outfits. The LTTE, which had earlier also supported Maoist with training and arms, is likely to play mischief in order to disrupt election. "LTTE is in a shambles but it would not leave any stone unturned to settle scores with India," said a cop.

Intelligence agencies have often found evidence of joint training camps and meetings of the LTTE and Maoists in forests of south India. "We also have to disrupt these meetings in the jungles and hilly terrains," the officer said. The threat in Gadchiroli, which shares borders with Andhra Pradesh and Chhattisgarh that have large numbers of highly-sensitive zones, is also looming large.
