LTTE concentrated fire on the 1 kilometer its left with

Heavy fighting continues in an area roughly the size of a square kilometer in Puthukudirippu, ahead of the no-fire zone. Task Force 8, the 58 and also the 53 took the brunt of a massive artillery and mortar attack almost carpeting the small area covered in coconut trees during the last two days. Though casualties are reported exact numbers are not available at this time.

Any further advances into the no-fire zone will take time as the Army cannot use its heavy firepower while the Tigers use all the fire power they can muster from gun positions situated inside IDP settlements.

The flow of civilians was continuing steadily until today when only 90 civilians reached Army controlled areas due to the massive shelling from the LTTE. As the week progresses more civilians are expected to come into government areas. So far around 55,000 civilians have returned to government areas. No agency has accurate estimates of the numbers still trapped in the no-fire zone.

Meanwhile the LTTE's cream has started abandoning the organization. The Director of the LTTE's Vanni Institute of Technology (VIT) surrendered to the Army a few days ago. A former Assistant Lecturer at the University of Peradeniya, the VIT Director graduated from the same school as a Computer Engineer and was later recruited by the LTTE while visiting his wife in the Vanni.

Sri Lanka suffering from the global crisis, government in denial
by Melani Manel Perera
Women and children are the hardest hit. The endless war between the army and Tamil rebels is making matters worse; so are decades of waste and corruption which have crippled the country. Here is an interview with sociologist Sunil Ranasinghe.

Colombo (AsiaNews) – Sri Lanka is not being spared by the worldwide economic crisis. In an interview with AsiaNews Sri Lankan sociologist Sunil Ranasinghe confirms that the global recession is having a major impact on the country. In order to continue its war against Tamil Tiger rebels the government is downplaying the problem, accusing those who talk about crisis of deceiving the population. In fact “we are in the midst of a social, economic and political crisis.”

What are the reality and myths of the economic crisis in Sri Lanka?

We are trying to understand the extent, roots and nature of the crisis at the global and local levels. Academics and activists are trying to interpret a crisis that is spreading like wildfire, affecting the rich and poor alike. But the Sri Lankan government and the head of the treasury are saying that there is no economic collapse in the country related to the global crisis, and are criticising economists and the opposition for deceiving the nation on this issue.

If that were true why is it that they got the International Monetary Fund (IMF) to give them a loan? Even children know that we live in one world, affected by the same global meltdown that is affecting everybody else, with rapidly rising unemployment and poverty.

How did Sri Lanka avoid this situation? What kind of dispensation do we have that we are not affected? The fact of the matter is that when the financial bubble burst the government asked for a US$ 1.9 billion loan to get out of the current economic quandary.

The IMF closed its bureau in Colombo in 2007, saying that no project was planned in Sri Lanka for the foreseeable future. In fact we are in the midst of a social, economic and political crisis. No one can get away with inventing political myths in order to carry out a brutal war against the nation.

Can you explain the present economic situation in Sri Lanka?

In December 2007 foreign currency reserves stood at US$ 3.4 billion dollars. Today they are down to US$ 1.7 billion, which correspond to three months of imports of food and basic necessities. In the last few years the government wiped out 45 per cent of the country’s reserves in war expenditures.

In its latest financial statement the government said it was going to raise 760 million rupees (US$ 7 million) in taxes, on the back of the population. The government is also expecting some US$ 600 million from the Japan international Bank Corporation to privatise the energy sector. Yet its overdraft on banks and the Bank of Ceylon is for more than 1.6 billion rupees (or about US$ 200 million).

The fact that the president had to call on Sri Lankan expatriates to help out is a sign of the crisis; it is the government and its backers who are deceiving the population.

How much does the past affect the current crisis?

Since 1980 many state-owned companies have been sold as part of the Structural Adjustment Program of the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund. This was meant to reduce the foreign debts of developing countries accumulated during the Seventies.

Sri Lanka was among the first in Asia to espouse free market economics. Since 1990 the government in Colombo has sold about 100 state corporations to private interests.

Corruption has increased as the nation’s wealth and public resources became tools in the hands of politicians and bureaucrats with total disregard for the interests of the population.

More than a thousand billion rupees have been wasted this way and people have become poorer.

The United States chose to decide their fate in the pursuit of the War on Terror, wasting US$ 35 billion since 9/11. Sri Lanka has increased military spending by billions of rupees, forgetting that half of the population lives below the poverty line.

Women and children are the hardest hit by the crisis. What can be done to avoid it?

With the war still on we cannot deal with the situation faced by many women. Women are half of a population of 20 million. One woman in two lives on 200 rupees a day (US$ 1.80) and many are poor without access to basic social services, treated like human garbage, suffering from hunger and malnutrition. About 45 per cent of pregnant women suffer from anaemia.

Children are not much better off. About 32 per cent are malnourished, and one in three is under weight.

Women are victims of the political system and male chauvinism which violate their basic rights. They are marginalised by the war and the country’s economic and cultural inequalities.

Yet they are the heart of the country’s economy. Out of 600,000 people employed in plantations, half are women who earn about a billion dollars. Out of 280,000 people working in free trade zones, about 75 per cent are young women, generating about US$ 2 billion.

All this money has not however freed women from enslavement and social segregation.

In the past 30 years more than 120,000 Sri Lankans have sent home earnings they made overseas, working as slaves; 65 per cent of them are women, who altogether earn about US$ 2 billion.

Until a few months ago foreign remittances by emigrants were worth more than US$ 3 billion; now they are down to US$ 1.2 billion.

Who destroyed such a women-based economy, the result of women’s toiling, tears and blood?

Women working in plantation are now sitting in front of their homes watching their children go hungry, asking themselves who stole the future. More than 16,000 young female workers have been laid off. What future do they have? More than 10,000 women, who lost their husbands fighting for the army in the last three years, have given up on their land because they cannot farm it because of the war. . . .

Prof Navindran's "Model Economy" country Singapore in trouble!!

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/asia-pacific/7949794.stm

Quotes from above:
"Singapore's prime minister Lee Hsien Loong has warned that his country faces its worst economic crisis since World War II.

Exports from Singapore are falling at their fastest rate since records began, down 24% last month on 2008 figures, and down 35% in January."

"Worst in decades

Trade has driven Singapore's economy throughout its 200 years of existence.

And, says Mr Lee, even record levels of government spending cannot stop the island state sliding into its worst recession in decades.

"Well we're going to have very negative growth this year," Mr Lee said. "

"But perhaps the biggest question hanging over Singapore is what the impact record levels of local unemployment will have on the government's popularity.

There is no political opposition to speak of, and public demonstrations are banned, but people may find other ways to express their discontent if this recession proves to be a prolonged one. "

Ha ha! Where are those Tamil financial experts Navindran has been quoting all the time??

IF WE ALSO BAN PUBLIC DEMONSTRATIONS AND POLITICAL OPPOSITION, WE CAN DO 100 TIMES BETTER THAN SINGAPORE!
NAVINDRAN, TAKE NOTE!

Sharp fall in Sri Lanka tea exports
Mar 5, 2009

COLOMBO (AFP) — Sri Lanka, one of the world's biggest tea exporters, registered a 30 percent drop in overseas sales in January because of a decline in the crop, the Sri Lanka Tea Board said on Thursday.

Sales from tea shipments fell to 6.9 billion rupees (61.37 million dollars) in January, compared to 9.8 billion rupees in the same period a year earlier, official figures showed.

Volumes of tea exports also fell 25 percent to 17.76 million kilograms (39.07 million pounds) in January, over the same month in 2008, the board said.

"We are reeling from twin effects of lower rainfall and a deliberate effort to curtail our own production. This has hit our exports in terms of volumes and earnings," Tea Board chairman Lalith Hettiarachchi told AFP.

Russia and former Soviet republics are the largest markets for Sri Lankan tea, accounting for nearly a fifth of total exports, followed by the Middle East and North Africa.

Sri Lanka benefited from the global commodity boom in early 2008, with export earnings hitting a record 1.23 billion dollars for the full year, up from 1.02 billion dollars in 2007.

Tea output also hit a record 318.47 million kilos, up from 305.2 million kilos produced in 2007.

However, with the onset of the global economic meltdown, prices have collapsed to an average of 2.65 dollars a kilo (1.20 dollars a pound) from record highs of 4.26 dollars a kilo between January and September last year.

Growers have also curbed output at the request of the Tea Board to manage high production costs and maintain quality.

The first signs of a drop in the crop were seen in December when output fell by a third to 19.9 million kilos from 29.5 million kilos in the same month a year earlier, Hettiarachchi said.

He expects production to slow down to just over 300 million kilos this year, partly due to high labour and fertiliser prices.

What do fellow patriots think we should do about this terrorist? Should we use international pressure to try to have him arrested and executed?

In the past the LTTE has always used their battle tanks several kilometers from the front lines, fired a few shots and then retreated. To think they finally decided to drive straight into the enemy territory is ridiculous.

China is consistently giving a tough chase to policymakers in New Delhi and is trying to out shadow India on every front and every sphere at the regional and global stage. Although the world perceives this tug of war as a race between two emerging Asian giants to acquire domination, an insight into this rat race clearly reflects asymmetry. According to highly placed sources in the Ministry of External Affairs, Beijing has upped its efforts and is employing backdoor diplomacy to stop the expansion of the United Security Council to remain the sole Asian representative in this all powerful club. China is skeptical of India's entry into the Security Council because of myriad reasons."

a VERY strong reason why SL should be with china not india.

glad gota made an IMPORTANT visit to china recently.

gota's travel (not AT ALL a frequent traveller) is a GOOD indication of SL's strategic DEFENCE interests!!! ((c) md(j))

actually there is some truth in what navindran says.

SL economy IS in trouble. we should accept this b4 it is too late. the fact is that SL cannot re-employ all those laid off employees. but overall the unemployment rate can be kept under check.

what to do to stimulate the economy??

the MOST basic is to expand business ventures starting at the most basic level. it needs factors of production.

1. LAND
2. LABOUR
3. CAPITAL
4. ENTREPRENUERSHIP

unemployment means, #2 is in abundant supply. although SL has VERY VERY high population density, vanni, etc. has little. so #1 is in abundant supply in liberated areas. entrepreneurship is in reasonable good supply and there are enough free advisory institutes.

capital IS a problem. but if we start from KNOWN industries with SHORT PAYBACK times and a READY MARKET, such as agri, fisheries, etc. the limited capital can be snowballed.

this is what the govt should do.

SL MUST convert military victories into ECONOMIC victories

the global recession and local recession fears are PERFECT opportunities to do this. there cannot be a better time to do this than global recession.

at the last budget one minister said that the war spend is an investment. if so, show some returns!!!

We are not in a position to convert military victories to economic victories until demining activity is over and complete security clearance given by the SLA.

actually GOSL is doing just what i said!!! few hikkups though.

the IMF loan and the economic stimulous it creates will be used to develop the north as well. remember the EASTERN REVIVAL program??? its a similar thing. but a broader one this time.

i prefer a more agressive development program. imports, exports, re-exports, transshipments are ALL dependant upon other countries' economic performance which is beyond SL's control. but SL has a huge internal economy and has ALL THE REASONS for a resurgance in the short term. get the MAXIMUM from it NOW.

Does anybody know prevailing conditions of the No Fire Zone ?

I don’t think they can get drinkable water in NFZ!

SLA should cut-off water supply to NFZ with immediate effect. This will force civilians to come over and destroy fighting capabilities of tigers.

If we managed to cut-off water supply successfully match will be over within few days!

Moshe,

I am not talking about food and medicine but water. If you have over 50,000 civilians and say 2000 terrorists living in NFZ at present, they need massive water supply, at least 25,000 litres a day. They used boiled water to an extent but not for long. It will be a quick end to civilian suffering.

Sniper said...

Romeo said,

This should not be done at all....or should not even think about it..we are not a nation like that...true that LTTE cut off water supply when capturing EPS..but we should not fall into their low level...

also if we do this it will have real bad impact towards the post LTTE era..as these civilians will always have a strong negative attitude towards the govt...only civilians would suffer from it most..and not the LTTE..

Romeo said...

This is a hostage situation and one good thing is hostages out number armed terrorists by far. If we can create a catalyst to agitate civilians tigers won’t be able to control them. Not only that even tigers be heavily affected by shortage of water.

This has been done by many occasions in the past at hostage situations. No fire zone can be a hell in day time under heavy sun without drinkable water.

At least we should not supply water to them in bottles because tigers will use them invariably on their long excursions.

Editor: "Badrinath" said...

["SLA should cut-off water supply to NFZ with immediate effect"]

Dear Modaya,

There are no pipes bringing water into no fire zone. Water comes from wells dug in the ground. There is no way to "cut off" water into the no fire zone.

Besides, cutting off water is a war crime.

Editor: "Badrinath" said...

["also if we do this it will have real bad impact towards the post LTTE era..as these civilians will always have a strong negative attitude towards the govt..."]

Already these civilians will hate you for life. You killed 5,000 of them so far by bombing then with artillery. They will jump at a chance to kill you or any sinhalese after this. You created a huge batch of terrorists for the next generation.

Sniper said...

Romeo,

in addition it will give some propoganda mileage to the LTTE against govt...which inturn would increase foreign involvement...so far the govt. has been successful in convincing the Int community that we are concerned about the civilians...if we cut off water it will give a real bad image about the govt and also us as a nation...what ever said these are our people..they are also sri lankans..

cant agree on this strategy at all...

Moshe Dyan said...

romeo,

food includes water. plus water has other uses as well.

what we should do is to intensify SLAF bombardment on identified big cat hideouts. we have precision guided munitions that causes LEAST amount of collateral damage.

it is allowed under conventions.

Sniper said...

They will jump at a chance to kill you or any sinhalese after this. You created a huge batch of terrorists for the next generation.

I seriously doubt it...the affected people know the reality.and not the diaspora who wants to continue on this hatred going so that they can get the benefits...

are the people in east hate the govt or act like terrorists...NO..

if you dont know go to east and see for yourself how peacefully they are living now..without the fear from terrorists...

The north will be the same...although you people want to continue it..you are not suffering from it....

this is the end of this terror in this country...

Romeo said...

It is just a suggestion aimed at ending human tragedy quickly. If we go on like this for another month even with all supplies intact, they are going to suffer more.

I thought quick end to hostage drama is better for all. When it comes to propaganda; no matter what you do, they will try to nail us with lies anyway.

However, I am not a decision maker and your disagreement welcome.

Romeo said...

Moshe,

No matter how precise is our guided munitions, we will be killing and injuring civilians because LTTE leadership keep heavy contingency of civilians close by.

As time goes on every Tom, Dick and Harry is going to shout at SLG. We cannot afford to drag this hostage drama more then necessary.

Either we should stop offensives for three more days with invited observers from foreign embassies, before we cut off supplies. Or go on attacking with small arms into the no fire zone. Either way civilians will die by huge numbers.

Sniper said...

If we go on like this for another month even with all supplies intact, they are going to suffer more.

This would work against the LTTE..the more time people stay there with LTTE the more they will start hating the LTTE for not letting them go..which is what we want for the post LTTE era...

I read few years ago that VP is destined to get die by the tamils it self...didnt think it would become real...but the turn of events now suggests it might well become a reality...

Some of these half baked economic pundits are limited by their inability to think through an entire process in its realistic context.

When the markets dropped 50% and even long term return ratios diminished due to the weightage of those numbers. So the fund managers who are looking for a quick return to address that situation are desperately looking for the emerging markets phenomenon which usually provides the highest and most spectacular growth.

With the war over, SL will be well positioned to be one of those engines of growth that 'buy and hold' investors will be looking for mediaum to long term investment. We already have analysts proactively seeking a time line for restoration of normalcy in SL so that they can beat the risk ratio curve.

Fuck the wanni monkeys, who cannot read anything right. We got the war right. The economy is just waiting to happen.

Romeo said...

The other problem with no fire zone is it has three roads to main land. It is like a peninsula which is easy to guard with fewer sentries. Therefore even with 2000 armed terrorists they can guard over 50,000 civilians.

This is a huge mistake. If tigers have to guard complete periphery with 2000 cadres, they will not have anybody to fight because they will thinned around 25km periphery.

SLG may withdraw giving them extra 20 sq.km without mines or arms and declare that as the new no fire zone. Then attack coastal area from Palamathalan to Mulative encircling peelam subjects completely.

Then it will be easy for civilians to escape because new boundary will be longer.

Moshe Dyan said...

TS,

agree.

but what SL needs is not just a boost to the share market. foreign (and even local) investors marketing to recession affected markets are not likely to invest very much directly in projects.

we need much more than that to generate employment, boost local production, especially food production, have a production linked-development plan (i will be harping on this ALOT in time to come).

SL is already feeling the heat of others' recession and as you said, we are IDEALLY placed to turn it into an opportunity. but we must act fast (of course not in a haste).

Romeo said...

The above strategy will divide remaining numbers of tigers into two. One section fighting with SLA in the coastal belt and the other section have to guard civilians. I do not think they have enough to do both. This makes SLA progress quickly while civilians can make rather easy attempts to free themselves.

Moshe Dyan said...

romeo,

that has been same with the war. we can go for a temporary truce but nothing much will happen. LTTE knows that if it releases civilians, that will be the end of it.

what use of winning the IC (even a little bit) by releasing civilians (to the LTTE) if it is going to get annihilated???

yes, we are in a VERY difficult situ. as i said a few weeks back, we are now facing the task of attacking our own NFZ. but there are ways.

in addition to targeted bombing by SLAF on tiger positions, we can split the NFZ. the "piece" where the BIG CAT is hiding will offer MOST resistence!!!

it is 12km long and only 1.7 km wide offering PERFECT conditions for a split.

the isolated "piece" will fall with little resistence.

the other piece will need to be pieced further. again in the new pieces, the piece with the BIG CAT will offer more resistence.

this will continue until the BIG CAT is trapped further and further.

TropicalStorm said...

The money for investment is in the East; China, Japan, India and to some extent Iran and other South-East Asian countries. Building bridges with countries like S.Korea, Indonesia and Thailand are very good and timely moves.

We don't need the west, because our needs are not that great, and in any case the west is sinking into its own cesspit. There's no need to suck up to the west anymore. They'll come to us anyway, not because we need them, but we offer very viable risk:return on investment.

Clinton's first overseas visit was with the begging bowl to Beijing. The worst nightmare of the American economist is the a Chinese NO to US debt. The chinese not only control liquidity in the US, but also have significant ability to control the US dollar exchange rate in global markets.

Romeo said...

You haven’t got what I said exactly. Narrow 12 km strip is easy to guard and fight without thinning out for terrorists. It will be difficult for SLA to progress with civilians.

Let SLA to destroy all shelters and facilities on 10 sq.km east to Puthi…. And withdraw SLA and demarcate that area as new no ire zone. Then LTTE will come with civilians to that area. Then attack coastal belt and clear it.

When we do that LTTE have to divide its cadres to fight with SLA in coastal areas as well as guarding humans in longer periphery.

This will make SLA progress quick and civilians escape easy.

What you talk about is the original NFZ. In fact LTTE herded civilians to the new NFZ before we declared that area. The motive of LTTE as you know o minimize escape routs. I wish that we can empty the Challai lagoon to make it easily walkable for civilians.

Moshe Dyan said...

romeo,

i earlier suggested this targeting the southern part. but it won't work now. we will be taking a step backwards and tigers will fortify the present NFZ with civilians - their best shield.

my suggestion is a piecing strategy spliting the LONG THIN NFZ.

the present LTTE plan is to save the sorry arses of its leaders. they don't really care about holding land. so when the NFZ is being split, tigers will mobilise its cadres/weapons to save the big cats.

Does not name correspondent but one regular ITN correspondent has been off the air for the past few days so I assume he is the culprit.

Govt needs to do a systematic inventory all LTTE items recovered and identify from where items were sourced, who was involved, review financial records and bank transactions, database of photographgs retrieved, etc.

Moshe Dyan said...

sam,

you got a point there although it may be very difficult.

originally govt decleared the present NFZ bcos it has NATURAL boundaries. that means there will be no confusion on its boundaries.

it is demarcated on the east and west by the sea and even in the north and the south, there are clear boundaries.

the plan worked well. but now we have only few access points to civilians.

SLAF rejects media reports on LTTE aircraft

March 29, 2009 12:51 pm

The Sri Lanka Air Force (SLAF) rejected a news report published by some international media outlets saying that the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) was in possession of another light aircraft.

SLAF spokesman Wing Commander Janaka Nanayakkara said they have not received any information over another light air craft belonging to the LTTE. According to him, four light aircraft of the LTTE were already destroyed by the government forces during the past two years. Seven air strips have also been captured by the forces during the ongoing operations in the North.

However some international media said that the Tamil Tigers may still have an aircraft left in their arsenal. Media reports said civilians had sighted this aircraft on several occasions and repairs are being done on the aircraft by the LTTE technicians inside a hut.

Some defence observers also believe the existence of another aircraft reserved for the exclusive use of their leader V. Prabhakaran for him to get away when the need arises.

but i saw the scroll'er on ITN news saturday. confirms another light air craft. shh don't shout.

State TV reporter found carrying LTTE laptops and cameras

A senior journalist attached to a state television station was apprehended by the police at a checkpoint in Medawachchiya on Thursday with 10 digital cameras and five laptops in his possession.

The journalist, who had been covering the ongoing conflict in the Wanni for a considerable period of time, had told the police that the cameras and laptops were his property.

However, after further questioning, he admitted the equipment had belonged to the LTTE. Several religious artefacts were also found in the journalist’s possession. According to a senior police officer who did not want to be identified, the artifacts had been removed from Hindu temples in the North.

The police later released the TV journalist but confiscated the equipment and artifacts he was carrying.
According to sources, the Medawachchiya police had received instructions not to record the incident.
Members of the independent media are banned from entering the conflict zone in the North.

/Less than a month after the attack on Sri Lankan cricketers in Lahore, the police training centre in the city has been attacked and as many as 15 are feared killed.

A blast was heard and then the attackers opened fire while entering the camp, reports said, adding that the attackers came from two sides and were wearing police uniforms.

Trainee policemen were doing parade when the attackers came. They scaled the training centre wall and threw grenades on trainee policemen, said media reports.

Eight grenades were lobbed. The attackers are still inside the police training centre, and the firing between them and policemen is still on, the reports added.

As per the reports, around 1500 cadets, who were inside the training camp, have been held hostage by the attackers.

More elite forces have now been called in.

Meanwhile, Pakistan Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani has condemned the attack.

The police training centre is located on outskirts of Lahore, at a place called Munavaan.

Parallels are being drawn with the recent attack on the Sri Lankan cricket team in Lahore./

Some one is taking away the No 1 place for terrorists from LTTE..

Guys,

I am not telling Ramawickrama is guilty or innocent without knowing facts.

There may be so many valuable items that are left by high ranking LTTE cadres in a hurry when SLA comes attacking. Then these items may be taken by soldiers and officers for their private use. It usually happens with police.

Therefore, if Ramawickrama’s story is true, there is nothing to get upset about it. You can’t expect every person involved in war front to be a saint. Most of the things get destroyed by LTTE before they retreat; any leftover is anybody’s in the battle front. You cannot maintain law and order in the battle front, especially when somebody has a gun in his hand. Rama is popular with SLA guys, they may have left him to take whatever he wants.

Romeo said...

Karu,

I predicted this just few hours before as a possibility as well as a strategy. This is good to keep IC at bay and finish remaining cadres later. IMF loan also will come.

CriMeWatCh said...

By the weekend, two military Divisions had laid siege to the LTTE held pocket in the coastal stretch. Guerrillas fighting to hold onto shrinking land were offering last ditch resistance. The deflating numbers of cadres already have a toll on the guerrillas, whose resistance is becoming uncoordinated most of the time during the past week, but, on Wednesday, the LTTE launched another ambitious counter attack against the 58 Division operating ahead of Iranapalai junction.
Is the LTTE prepared to risk annihilation? That is not a sane decision under any military theory, but all indications point to that direction. It would not be long before the guerrillas would lose the remnant ground. Some units attached to the 58 Division are operating a mere 400 meters from the boundaries of the No Fire Zone. The 55 Division which is advancing southward is two km from the northern edge of the No Fire Zone. Troops of this division had overrun three earth bunds of guerrillas since they crossed the Nanthikadal lagoon and were positioned near the fourth bund by the weekend. This is where the bitter fighting is expected to flare up between the advancing troops and the defending guerrillas who have lost much of the land in the southern front to the 58 Division, which had prompted it to relocate its long range guns and operational centers to the No Fire Zone. Aerial pictures taken by the Air Force reconnaissance planes have revealed the ammunition dumps, bunkers and some of the vehicles mounted with heavy weapons located inside the No Fire Zone.

Fleeing civilians

Military officials citing information from fleeing civilians claim that the Tiger chieftain Velupillai Prabhakaran and his son Charles Anthony have moved to the “No Fire Zone.”
The Surface to Air Missile attacks directed at the two Bell 212 helicopters engaged in the evacuation of wounded soldiers are believed to be launched by the cadres of the Ratha regiment providing security for Prabhakaran. The two missiles where launched from the “No Fire Zone”, however the counter missile systems were activated saving the troops onboard.
Though its strike capabilities are gradually diminishing, largely due to the shortage of trained fighters, the LTTE launched a major counter attack on Wednesday.

Tiger leaders

An estimated 300 Tiger cadres launched an attack on the troops of the 7 Singha Regiment and 20 Gajaba Regiment. Tiger leaders, Banu and Lawrence had led the attack. The Seven Singha regiment pulled back 500 meters. General Officer Commander of the 58 Division, Brigadier Shavindra Silva was on leave at the time of the attack. He flew back to his Division next day afternoon to direct military operations. The LTTE strategy had been to break through the defence line manned by the 7 Singha Regiment. Additional troops were dispatched to reinforce the defence line. Newly dispatched troops beefed up the second and third defence lines, which meant that the guerrillas who would break through the forward defence lines would march into a virtual ambush. Commandos and Special Forces were dispatched to support the troops while infantry troops of 20 Gajaba Regiment were assigned to cut off the road which could be used to send in reinforcement.
By the afternoon of Wednesday, troops succeeded repulsing the attack, but in the evening, Tigers attacked the troops of the 20 Gajaba Regiment. Four waves of the guerrillas tried to storm the newly consolidated positions. Main Battle Tanks and Infantry Fighting Vehicles targeted two cabs fitted with heavy weapons. The Mechanized Infantry Brigade of the Sri Lanka army is now fulfilling its mission. The high mobility of the troops since the collapse of the northern front of the LTTE is largely attributed to the Mechanized Infantry, of which the main objective was to address the disadvantages stemming from the lack of mobility of the conventional infantry troops. While the Infantry Fighting Vehicles and Main Battle Tanks are regularly used to provide fire support to the troops, the Mechanised Infantry Brigade has extensively been used in combat in the open land when the troops are faced with stiffer resistance.

Guerrilla warfare

However, as things stand now, the LTTE would like to revert to guerrilla warfare in the coming months. However, the success of the LTTE in guerrilla strategy is largely dependent on its ability to infiltrate the security forces defence lines in order to retreat into the Iranamadu jungles. Should the guerrillas succeed in retreating to the jungles in large numbers, the security forces would be compelled to deploy a large number of special forces in the search operations. Any large scale guerrilla infiltration would complicate the second phase of the government’s overall strategy related to the North East. This has compelled the troops to beef up secondary defence lines and engage in regular search operations and deploy ambush teams targeting possible guerrilla infiltrators.

Retreat

What the Tigers could achieve through retreat to the jungles was evident last week.
Five paddy farmers were killed and 2 wounded by a group of LTTE cadres in Dehiwatte, a remote village in Serunuwara, Kanthalai on Tuesday. Tigers abducted seven farmers and shot them at point blank range, killing five and wounding two others.
Four other farmers were killed the next day in the same manner. Four farmers who escaped with gunshot injuries are now receiving treatment at the Government Hospital at Polonnaruwa, Welikanda Police said. On Friday, Serunuwara poice said it had arrested two suspects believed to the members of the guerrillas responsible for last week’s killings. The two men were carrying four hand grenades and a shot gun, police said. It is not clear whether the guerrilla infiltrators were part of fresh infiltration from the Wanni or the remnant of the groups of Tigers who operated from Kanchikudichchiaru jungles.

One solution available for GoSL for precision strikes as of now is:
1>Alert any of the 2 Big Brother's to be on standby mode.Strikes have to be within the NFZ and co-ordinates are there.
2>Mount 24\7 surveillence to track the BigFish
3>When established, sound the BigBrother for launch

Its faster \ safer \ precise and above all lethal as the Tiger's dont have any measures to counter its success.SLAF can always claim responsibility in future.

Something tells me that the end would come this way

End Game..

1. SLA advance up to the no fire zone

2. GSL declare end of war, all areas liberated except no fire zone

3. GSL declare unilateral cease fire

4. Divert all the UN/IC/HR heros/ diAsspora etc pressure on LTTE to release the human shield

Case 1. LTTE hold the human shield

Then SLA will start the worlds biggest hostage rescue mission possibly with help of India/ IC etc.

Case 2. LTTE hold the human shield but civilians come out

[No cases for barbaric LTTE to release the human shield!]

Case 2 will minimize civilian casualties unless LTTE keep killing their own human shield.

In either case;

5. SLA will move in to the no fire zone after few days.

6. All the heavy weapons, ammo, boats etc to be found.

7. At any time SLA will fire (cease the cease fire) IF LTTE attacks.

8. LTTE cadres can mingle in to the civilians or surrender or commit suicide or infiltrate in to the jungles (even first using the sea routes.)

9. LTTE top leaders also have the same possibilities as #8.

10. Once safe zone also fully cleared GSL will declare the victory and it is the victory.

LTTE help for Indian Maoists?

The Maoists’ plan to challenge the security forces during the forthcoming Idian general election may turn ominous as the former are likely to
get support from various anti-national groups including a battered LTTE looking to create diversions. Sri Lanka’s LTTE have been a known ally of the rebels.

In the ballot versus bullet war, government security forces would possibly have to fight grim battles to ensure that citizens do not succumb to the boycott call of the Maoists and the polling is not disrupted. Though the effect of LTTE -support, according to the central intelligence agencies, is expected to be felt mostly down south and southeast, the repercussion cannot be ignored even in the central India.

Maharashtra state Anti-Naxal Operation Cell (ANO) has already issued an alert to the adjoining states to step up their border-sealing activities to prevent ‘crossing-over’ and ‘joint-operations’ of the Naxal outfits. The LTTE, which had earlier also supported Maoist with training and arms, is likely to play mischief in order to disrupt election. “LTTE is in a shambles but it would not leave any stone unturned to settle scores with India,” said a cop.

Intelligence agencies have often found evidence of joint training camps and meetings of the LTTE and Maoists in forests of south India. “We also have to disrupt these meetings in the jungles and hilly terrains,” the officer said. The threat in Gadchiroli, which shares borders with Andhra Pradesh and Chhattisgarh that have large numbers of highly-sensitive zones, is also looming large.

We need more patriots who think like you. But one humble suggestion, 2 generations is not enough. We should make the Tamils as slaves for at least 5 or 6 generations.

Make their great grandsons be slaves as well, so that they learn the lesson. In fact we should punish the kids as soon as they are born. No milk for the children. Let them learn not to be a terrorist from birth itself. No milk for them and then no school either. Straight to being slaves.

Saman said...

Guys,

How this would end?

Well I still put my faith on SF/GR the grand masters.

NFS is 2x12 km strip, flanked by sea and the lagoon to east and west plugged from the North and South.

Any cease fire at this stage a disaster as that would not yield any results. GoSL have to feed, say 100k, under serious human suffering and LTTE would hold happily. May be GoSL would give a short period before the next move.

I feel there will be three incursions splitting this 12km long sausage to three segments by Army moving west to east while Navy landing on East shore. Then they would move North and South by splitting LTTE strength to three small units. Obviously DPU’s and SLAF will have their say too.

I can’t see any reason to stop now. For UN to deploy task forces purely from a logistical point of view would take at least a month. LTTE would use this period for further pressure and re-organize.

Even if 2000 Mahaveers dead, if we get the job done all these “victim industry scum” will create/find another tragedy to make a living like blood sucking parasites. Don’t worry. I do not think any one will put their finger in to this area -very unlikely with crack battle hardened GoSL turning to a reactionary force.

All Tamil women should be seen as just payment for years of terrorism. And all properties should be divided based on who found them first. In fact I think we can sell the young children for adoption in foreign countries, to people like Madona, and the money should go to the heroic soldiers who fought for justice for all Sri Lankans.

Not only were they built indegeneously, they have achieved an enviable CEP of 40metres.Considering the payload they carry, this CEP is negligible completely.

In current situation,it would be devastating as the bunker's the top rung use would be make shift ones and they wont stand a chance against such launch. To rub it in,Tiger's dont have any counter measures,no one in the world has effective counter measures against guided missile launches.

This option is fool proof and safer for GoSL as they neednt risk their aircrafts

I don't know how many times it has to be made clear to Eelamtards. If you want Eelam, you've got to get to Sri Lanka and fight for it. It's no use moaning and complaining for it in the UK. I realise that the 'fighting for it' option isn't looking particularly attractive, especially if you're settled comfortably in the West.

I know you want to be proud of your country, but the facts are India is no where up there in the list of world powers. How long did it take to clear some scroungy terrorists in Kargal? No question of precision weapons. Soldiers had to actually climb those mountains by hand and use machine guns to get the terrorists out. They were certainly brave, but they didn't have the type of equipment the U.S. and other countries have.

Today everyone sees these catch words on BBC and CNN and thinks slum countries like Lanka are in the same league. As a general rule, if you are buying weapons from African third world countries, then you aren't in the precision strike league.

India has made big achievements for a third world country, but it is still testing various types of ballistic missiles. Its a long way away from being a super power - in fact it never will be. India doesn't deserve to be a super power. Third world corruption doesn't fit in with the "super power" concept.

I have been repeatedly asking our Navindran Bappa to give the eelamic definition for his famous term 'economic collapse'. So far my humble requests have been valiantly ignored.

Following is my two cents on the subject.

Understanding Navindran ‘s economic collapse

What is economic collapse?

An economic collapse is a disturbing breakdown of a national, regional, or territorial economy. It is essentially a severe economic depression characterized by a sharp increase in bankruptcy and unemployment.

Has the SL economy collapsed?
The third quarter GDP for 2008 grew by 6.3% while the unemployment rate for the third quarter of 2008 stood at 5.2% a reduction compared to 2007’s third quarter figure of 5.6%. However, the external sector continues to show a sharp deterioration as the terms of trade, trade balance, official reserves , net capital inflows and private remittances continues to decrease. This adverse trend will cause growth figures to fall and there could be a raise in the rate of unemployment (projected to be around 6-7% but still lower than USA’s projection of 9.2%). The deterioration in the external sector can be addressed, using short term measures.

However , whether the deterioration in the external sector is sufficient to bring about a complete standstill or a disturbing breakdown of the national economy characterized by a sharp increase in bankruptcy and unemployment is yet to be seen.

POST WAR-
What SL need most for accelerated growth are
1. Capital – FDI , grants, aids, Loans
2. Technology- to increase efficiency and maximize efficient use of factors of production.

The underutilized factors of production in North can be productive/added to the SL resource base only if capital and technology can be effectively applied.

This is our biggest post war challenge. Expats, please help SL with technology transfers.

You really have a grudge against India, dont you.Could sense it in your post.

But bringing Kargil in here..hmmm
Well the operations lasted for 2-3 months and it was not some scroungy terrorists as you mentioned. It was a mix of militants with Pak army.

India collected bodies of Pak army personnel in the war and who said India didnt use precision attacks in the war.You ought to study that war more carefully.

Anyways, all that is immaterial in this blog.

Yesterday, I met an interesting gentleman on the flight. He owns a Jwellery Shop in Colombo and is a Tamil.

According to him, LTTE demands Rs. 2M from him every month. He says it is a constant struggle with LTTE on money. According to him, the collection is still going on. [TID take note!]. He has negotiated it down to Rs 250,000 for the last few years. He says he can not avoid it owing to repercussions.

He says all the Tamil community is tired of LTTE, and told that it is the biggest curse to Tamils.

His words are that "LTTE is cancer and he can not wait to see government puts an end to them".

According to him, many Tamils who live in Sri Lanka would be happy when this thing is over and Prabhakaran is no more!

I believe him!

Would LTTE have lost East under 2 year had they commanded even 25% eastern tamil support?

Would forces be able to corner them into 24Km^2 area had even 40% nothern tamils supported them?

Its just like what JVP had in south. 10% supported willingly the rest of the support was due to the guns.

I not only agree with this... but also cautiously optimistic that a Tamil Elaam would be born in a province / state in one of the western countries…. Sooner than later.

Because:

a)These large countries have enough space that need to be developed. Only missing ingredient is human resources.

b) These countries are deeply interested only in profit in $$$$ terms, and if a good case is put forward by Tamil Diaspora, there's a good chance that Elaam would even be offered.

c) There's never a shortage of emigrated 'Tamil' population in the west, than in Asia, Africa, or South America.... So why not in the West?

Sri Lanka will have to look at this scenario in a positive way... not that we care about the fkucking Elaam... but the opportunity it creates and offers to us… to become the Israel on the Indian Ocean... because... #1 agenda of the Republic of Elaam will be destroy Sri Lankans... no matter where is Elaam is created. So we can launch weapon industries to manufacture our weapons to fight the Elaam forces…. (Imagine Sri Lanka sending a intercontinental missile… all the way to hit the heart if Elaam 7000 KM away?)

Never take this possibility lightly... Who knows... a crooked western country wishing the doom for resource-rich Sri Lanka, might even offer a 'Temporary Elaam' next week, at least until Sri Lanka is, partly paralyzed.

This is what actually happened…

The peelamists had a dream girl called ‘Peelam’….

They looked after her from birth so that one day all peelamists can marry her…

They put a guardian called Vihilu Pille to protect her from others…who was given all powers to look after her…This Vihilu even went to the extent of killing the relatives of the peelam dream girl to protect her!!!

(Like Rajiv who was like a brother to Peelam girl..where both had the same mother Indira…and Premadasa who gave food and shelter to the peelam girl and the guardian Vihilu…just like a good old uncle….)

Time went by…the Peelam girl reached puberty…and all peelamists started to dream and wank about her…they all were praising Vihilu for the protection he gave for all these years…and they gave him the prestigious title…“Sun Goat”!!!

However, a guy called MR started to flirt with the Peelam girl…and he managed to convince Vihilu that he will arrange the marriage of Peelam girl to the peelamists…and Vihilu trusted him…

One day MR asked the Peelam girl on a date..and she was given the OK by Vihilu…but he didn’t know that MR was a gangster pretending to be friend..The Date went on…but MR had other plans..he called out bros GR, BR and started to rape the peelam girl…GR called out his good old friend SF to join in…and they started a ‘mega gang bang’ on the Peelam girl…

SF also called up his fellows, like JD, SS, PS, to get a taste of peelam girl…Even by passers like Keheli, Wimale, Koho joined and the Mega gang bang kept on going…

The peelamists were stunned…they immediately stopped dreaming and wanking…unable to withstand on what’s happening…they cried out for help…but in their hasten they shouted with wrong words like “Genocide”, “Genocide”…but actually they should have shouted “Raping”, “Raping” or “Gang Bang” etc…. So no one came to help as it was not a Genocide…

In the mean time the Peelam girl who couldn’t withstand the gang bang passed away from it!!!…

The peelamists got so frustrated they started to self immolate, hold hands, send telegrams…and started wander around the cyber space attacking anything that came in the way to dent their frustration…Vihilu started to wander around a beach near ‘Puthu’ looking at the sun set thinking about the mistake he did by trusting MR…he too contemplated to self immolate…

This was the sad story of Peelam girl….

Hope you understand the pain, frustration and anger in the peelamists..and forgive them…

So let us all start praying for the Peelam girl..that may she RIP…and hope she will not come to this world again to get such a vulgar treatment…

amen...

Puran Appu,

Are we stopping short of eradicating rats in the NFZ? I am very puzzled by it given how GR and SF would do things. In any case, Velu will not come to any discussion nor surrender. This sounds little bit insane to me unless of course we keep hunting them every day. What are the current goals of 53, 55, 58, and TF 8?

Colomblogs said...

SLA is getting harvest in a good rate at East of Iranapali. There were several diversion attacks by 58 to get more rats to an one location and snipped.

Message to Makkal Army is clear. You are the softest target!

Two sucide carders were sent on a mission. They were backed by good hard core team. With the SLA fire they were scattered and suciders lost the place and atarget then just blew him self.

With Govt's expected annoucment MI warn several "attention seeking" black tiget attacks in Colombo.

Sam Perera said...

Puran Appu,

The most desired outcome is getting Velu killed by Tamil Sri Lankan civilians. Otherwise, we have to send him to Eelam without any delay. Any chance given for Velu to breath is treason at this point.
