LTTE's old tactics no match for the 'new' SL Army

Heavy fighting ensued south of Chalai in general area Mulaitivu when a wave of LTTE infiltrators and attack teams targeted a weak point in the forward marching divisions last morning. The infiltrators were first spotted by the 55 Division as they targeted the boundary of two brigades of the 55 and 58 Divisions. The exact casualties to both sides will be revealed later.

During Oyatha Alaikal 1, 2 and 3, the Tigers successfully collapsed the Army's divisions by attacking them at the seam. This usually results in the two respective Divisions and their affected Brigades, Battalions all the way down to a platoon being split, thus opening up a gap through which the Tigers could flank the Divisions.

But this type of operation requires high morale, manpower and firepower on the part of the Tigers and weak leadership and morale and also inferior field tactics and strategies on the part of the Army, both of which were unavailable yesterday. A tactic like this will have little effect particularly on an Army which has 3 Divisions, 5 Task Forces and a Special Forces Brigade on reserve.

In many of the unfortunate occasions where this has happened to the Army, it happened due to low morale and inferior leadership on the part of some officers. Some Field Commanders-- from Platoon COs upto Brigade COs were concentrating on their own respective unit and not on the counter attack.

Meanwhile the LTTE has started another scam to discredit the Army and to give their fighters a fighting chance. The scam is to pose-off injured fighters as civilians who are handed over to the ICRC inside the civilian safety zone. From there these 'civilians' are registered by the ICRC and handed-over the the Sri Lanka Navy. The Navy will then transport them to Trincomalee Hospital.

Military Intelligence and Naval Intelligence have so far identified 30-40 such fighters from among the 'civilians'. They cannot be arrested or detained nor can they be rehabilitated like surrendees. If they are resettled once recovered from the wounds, there is a possibility that they might operate as insurgents from among the civilians.

Number one is identifying LTTE cadres who are mixing with Civilian casualties. Two things can be done. Share the way we identified them as LTTE cadres with ICRC and arrest them. Other thing is make sure they are kept in camps more closely monitored until war is over so that way at least we keep them away from joining LTTE again in this wave of fighting. Once the war is over, the landscape will be totally different. Even if they have thoughts of insurgency, that needs to be expected and dealt with.

Now that we know LTTE injured is among civilians it should be made available for news and media as a big deal, not just a small news flash in DW. Looks like the way SL is dealing with them is according to international law and that needs to be big news too. Once it is known and the stage is set, then SL can move to more risky territory by dealing with them.

Don't try to justify killing and war using Buddhism. Please stay away from that argument.

The name of our culture is Buddhist. Buddhism is something else. Sinhalese Buddhists don't have to feel guilty a about the participation of the war since it is for their own survival.

Only some of us have chosen to follow the path of Buddha and the rest can therefore do whatever they want.

He is under-employed and may be hating himself. People in UK know the current economic condition there and how hard it is o find jobs. That might be exploited by the brainwashing diaspora and pursued him to commit suicide possibly promising a large sum of money to his family. That is why his family is "Proud".

I have some doubts about Kasturi's patriotic zeal as once she said this vistory is all due to
1. Karuna
2. LTTE messing it slf
3. India

In fact in one of her blog comments she even went so far as to say that "Therefore, if MR, GR and SF have done their bit to get rid of bad rubbish, then Prabhakaran also did his part of self immolation by bringing eelam down in an irreversible process."

So...GR..SF and MR has done a bit and VP's contribution is similar to LTTE down fall.

If you read all her blog comments...she keeps on telling how Mahathay's were eliminated and this is her way to say LTTE's down fall is self inflicted...not perpetrated b SL.

Actually I believe he main intention is to trying very subtly to convince us that this victory is nothing much and we should not think much about it. If you have any doubts please read her/his blog comments.

...and I am very sure she is one of the youngest bloggers and the way she pushes around...telling every one who is good and who is not..this obnoxious...

So...in subtle way she is trying to side step very same people who supported this blog...in the long run by confronting LTTE AVATARS and to lead this into a LAME BLOG.... a blog full of PANSIES...

People talk about culture:
In Sri Lanka, the premier culture should be Sinhalese Buddhist.

It is kind of like the premire culture in USA - Caucasian Christian American.

That doesn't mean we need to suppress other minority cultures.

A premier culture is necessary to keep majority at ease. The Sri Lankan decisions should be mainly directed to address majority grievances first. The minorities can only expect to be happy when the majority is happy - this is what I call the law of nature.

This has nothing to do with majority being Sinhalese and their religion is Buddhism. This should apply when the Majority is Tamil and their religion is Christian as well.

Following this, Mr. David Loyn, the International Development Correspondent of BBC News and the author of the aforesaid BBC news report, has written to Professor Wijesinha to express his displeasure about the latter's criticism of the BBC: Given below is a series of E-mail messages exchanged between Prof. Rajiva Wijesinha and the BBC correspondent Mr. David Loyn.

Prof. Rajiva Wijesinha

I am not responding in detail to the substance of your attack on the BBC, which will be dealt with more fully in a separate response from my editors, although if there should be any doubt that I was faithfully reporting the views of the ICRC, for coroboration look at p 59 of today's Economist, which was based on similar access in London to Mr de Maio of the ICRC and says 'The normally circumspect organisation is complaining loudly of an unfolding humanitarian catastrophe...Many of the displaced Tamil civilians are huddled on a barren beach, awaiting rescue from what is supposed to be a government-designated "safe zone". In practice, it has come under fire.'

Nor will I take on your rather curious characterisation of me as young, inexperienced and lacking in academic achievement.

I would however ask just one thing: If the situation there is as you say it is now, then assist me in obtaining access to your forces in the field, to the IDP camps in Vavuniya, and to the beach at Putumattalan, and I will report what I see.

I look forward to your positive response
David Loyn

From:

Subject:

Dear Mr Loyn

Thank you for your response, which is most welcome because previously the BBC has ignored all rebuttals, even when they were sent to the directorate.

I am sure whatever Mr de Maio said could have been interpreted in different ways, but since the Vice-President of the ICRC told me he had been misquoted I am not sure that I should rely on what the Economist says for corroboration of your interpretation. The problem might be solved if you were to come to Geneva and we met together with Mr de Maio and the Vice-President. We could then discuss any further visits you might wish to make.

Today's revelation by the UN that AP, cited in turn by Human Rights Watch, had attributed to an UN spokesman what you had attributed to Mr de Maio, suggests that confusion can be even greater confounded by what seem current techniques of journalism.

I am travelling at present so cannot remember what I said that should make you feel I have characterized you as 'young, inexperienced and lacking in academic achievement' but I believe I was talking about academic precision, and it was those who should have checked on the references you cited who were guilty of a lapse. Since you had interviewed Mr di Maio yourself, you had nothing to check, which is why I used the word distortion. If it was genuine misunderstanding, you have my sympathies, as you do if you are not young.

I look forward to seeing you in Geneva, please call the Mission to arrange a meeting. Thank you again for caring enough to contact me.

Yours sincerely, Rajiva Wijesinha

RC,

Points you raise are very relevant today. These are matters that any student of Buddhism must try to ponder on.

Don't try to justify killing and war using Buddhism.

I, a humble student of Buddhism justify only self defence not killing.

Let us say I am very much dedicated to Buddhist studies and a certain group of people are planning to kill me just because I am on this path. I’m justified in utilising all the analytical rigour and physical vigour I acquire through the study of Buddhist philosophy to neutralise the ignorant enemy. Buddha himself is said to have used his psychic powers to neutralise devilish men like Angulimala, sadly most of us are far far away from any psychic powers.

The best is to make ourselves invincible so that nobody dares to challenge us, but we will remain as soft as deers, and compassionate as Buddha advised us to be. Buddhists of the Shaolin Temple practised that but they couldn’t stand the bullets.

Any student of Buddhism is embarked on a war which is far more fearsome and challenging than thousand and thousand of winning battles :

Yo Sahassan Sahssena
Sangamee Manuseeginee
Ekanche Jaiiya Aththanam
Save Sangame Juththemee

Knowing that the earth in infested with savage killer humans animated by cold hearts, all Buddhist who are dedicated to preserving all forms of life must make themselves invincible in the art of war, if the situation so requires. It is not to wage war but to defend oneself.

We must not have the same tragic fate as the Gandhara ( Buddhist Afghanistan) where the famous University of Thakshila was, neither that of the Tibet.

This approach also prepares the student of Buddhism for billion terrible battles that has to be fought to arrive at ATHTHANA VIJAYA.

All counter arguments are most welcome.

RC : The name of our culture is Buddhist. Buddhism is something else. Sinhalese Buddhists don't have to feel guilty a about the participation of the war since it is for their own survival.

Culture of the average Singhala is based on Buddhism. It is for each person to practice Buddhist philosophy as he thinks fit. There is nothing wrong if our village boys practises Samatha/Vipassana meditation in the battlefield itself to make themselves highly alert and vigilant. Student of Buddhism practices the philosophy everywhere, in war, in love or in peace

Only some of us have chosen to follow the path of Buddha and the rest can therefore do whatever they want.

You want to subvert Buddhism with a caste system, a mandarinat!!! Buddhism is a circle, not a pyramid.

Everybody can follow the path of Buddha, monk, layman or soldier. It is not an affair of one life or a million life but of cosmic cycles. Never forget that when our brother soldiers kill the tiger thugs in our name, whether you have chosen to follow the path of Buddha or not, you also participate in that killing. Let us not try to play the Ostrich.

Buddhist monks or your so called followers of Buddhism must go forth into the world to see how it works, so that you can serve correctly the people who feed you and sustain you.

The path of Buddha begins with right vision. Then we can build samma sangkalpas based on that.

I’m not at all for Upasaka saka Saka, Raeeta Raa Boothalaa Dekadeka ! ! !

MathaMathica is a mere humble student of Buddhism and all his concepts may be erroneous. It is up to the learned ones to point out logically, with reasons, what ever is wrong with these Mathas.

What the MFRs should do is, if they do not have right information, then refrain from reporting garbage.

If you are dedicated to Buddhist studies, why are you here?
This blog does not provide a source of Buddhist wisdom for you and therefore it is a waste of your time and effort.

"Buddha himself is said to have used his psychic powers to neutralise devilish men like Angulimala, sadly most of us are far far away from any psychic powers."

Do you believe this? I doubt it. In fact, the term "said to have" means it is an opinion.

The problem of using Buddhism to justify what we are doing is, that will make you vulnerable against arguements by those who knows Buddhism well.

If someone ask you, how come you are not believing in maithree and nahi verana verani concepts, how are you going to respond to that?

You say:
"Culture of the average Singhala is based on Buddhism."

I like to ask what part?

" It is for each person to practice Buddhist philosophy as he thinks fit. "

This has been a problem for Buddhists - every one has their own way of following it. Every temple has their own traditions. That doesn't make a strong society.

"There is nothing wrong if our village boys practises Samatha/Vipassana meditation in the battlefield itself to make themselves highly alert and vigilant. Student of Buddhism practices the philosophy everywhere, in war, in love or in peace"

I agree, nothing wrong and that is how it should be.

It is good to hear that you are open minded.

[ Buddhism is a philosophy not a religion. (am i right?)]

It depends. In true sense, it is a philosophy. However some follow it as a religion (over 95% of Sinhalese Buddhists). That was not the way Buddha intended people to follow.

[ I for one being a Christain follow certain philosophies practised by Buddhism. There are certain principles that i like and follow.]

There is nothing wrong with that. Jesus himself was a Buddhist and some of us thinks he was an Enlightened as well.

100% agreed.

His answer was “monastery people follow therawada to the letter and trying hard to end samsara alone while other group is trying to end samsara with everybody else”. Also the second type of monks wants to change with time. So, monks in London shake hands with white people etc etc.

I am for the monastery system and bit sceptical about those preach changing with the time and environment (living with western society) is not bad.

Even for self defence if you kill a living being, you are committing "pranaghatha" You have to try an minimise your bad actions. Otherwise you have to give up lay life and become a "wanawasi" monk (thapasaya)

I try to avoid coming to DW, but Civilian I have an answer for you.

1 Tamil Life = 1 Sinhalese Life = 1 Muslim Life anywhere
1 Sinhalese Life = 1 Tamil Life = 1 Muslim Life anywhere

That has been my stand since I was a Year Nine student. For this stand I have been abused by many, I had to disassociate myself with some (friends), I walked away from dinner parties.

In the basis of this very principle, this war needs to be continued until it sees its logical end, otherwise many people will die and enslaved, tortured and oppressed by Sun God. Your Sun God has no hesitation to kill these civilians by shooting them, even killing them in a refugee camp by suicide killers.

If this war is stopped many thousand deaths will occur. The Sun God’s cycle of violence will continue unabated. LTTE is a giant virus. It needs to be taken out. When it is taken out some harm will happen. We do not like it. In this war, it is my information that the Army works in the formula

SL Government soldiers life < Civilian Life.

This is evident from suicide killers were able to attack in side a refugee camp itself.

If you are crying for cessation of this war in the name of your family what you are asking is to sacrifice tens of thousands more families in the altar of Sun God. There are so many families killed by your Sun God’s suicide killers.

Still for me 1 Tamil Life = 1 Sinhalese Life and vice versa anywhere. So war needs to continue. If you cannot get it then you are most probably a believer of Sun God’s barbaric altar. You need more and more blood to be shed. Otherwise take it as a Natural disaster what we all have to see through.

Do not answer this. In the remote case that you are really distressed about your family I am really sorry for the pain you are going through. Do not answer this if you do not see the point. I will not ever address you unless you make a comment about Sun God’ responsibility for these crimes.

THat is partly due to the army not using heavy fire power, wanting to minimise casulaties to soldiers and civillians, and also the LTTE is using heavy fire, indiscriminately. My contact also says Army deaths in the northern war may be around 5,000 so far, injured also large numbers.

Let’s honour the Lankans
By Kamran Rehmat
===================

A QUARTER of a century ago, The Economist carried on its cover a poignant close-up of Junius Richard Jayawardene with a tear rolling down his cheek.

Jayawardene was then the Sri Lankan president and the teardrop was actually the map of his island nation, which was bleeding from a debilitating insurgency.

In Lahore on Tuesday, another Jayawardene was leading the Sri Lankans. This time it was the cricket team. His performance was to be his swansong as captain and the island-nation’s team came perilously close to becoming a teardrop – albeit for Pakistan.

One has come across many people, not all of them with even a nodding acquaintance with cricket, since the events of Tuesday, who have shed tears at what happened at the Liberty roundabout in Lahore. Others who were more tuned in to the intricacies of what brought the Lankans to Pakistan looked on with disbelief as the terrorists struck, for they knew what this would portend for Pakistan – and Pakistani cricket, in particular.

There was a collective sigh of relief when the visitors returned home ‘in one piece’ as a jaded Jayawardene told reporters at the Bandaranaike International Airport upon arrival.

To begin with the ‘Pearl Island’ – as Sri Lanka is popularly known – showed great character in the face of intense pressure from India not to tour Pakistan after Islamabad reached out to Colombo following the cancellation of the Indian cricket team’s scheduled tour of Pakistan last January. According to news reports, Indian External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee tried his best to nudge Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa into declining Islamabad’s request to fill the void left by New Delhi’s refusal to send over its team.

In the heat of the Mumbai mania – not to forget the geographical disposition of India vis-à-vis Sri Lanka – it was not an easy decision to make. However, Rajapaksa managed the diplomatic tightrope walk with grace. Although India succeeded in driving a wedge in the originally drafted series of three Test matches, five ODIs and a Twenty20 in Pakistan, Colombo did not turn its back on Islamabad. There is a bit of history involved in the Sri Lankan gesture of solidarity with Pakistan.

Sri Lanka won Test status in 1982 primarily due to a support campaign spearheaded by Pakistan. The people of Sri Lanka still remember with fondness how a combined team from Pakistan and India played friendly matches on the island to show solidarity with them when some teams, led by Australia, refused to play there during the 1996 World Cup.

But most of all, they have not forgotten how Pakistanis swarmed the Gaddafi Stadium with Sri Lankan flags to support them when, as poetic justice would have it, Australia had to face Arjuna Ranatunga’s tigers in the final of that World Cup in Lahore. No prizes for guessing who won.

But Sri Lanka’s ties with Pakistan go beyond a game both nations love and consider second only to religion. Sri Lanka’s geographical ties with India which has led to the latter being accused of fomenting the secessionist campaign of the LTTE through a sea route at the tip of the island in Jaffna has always been an albatross around Colombo’s neck. Subsequent Indian involvement – a result of late Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi’s decision to send peacekeeping troops to the island under an agreement with Colombo – gave rise to bitter resentment among the Sri Lankans, who felt that the action compromised their sovereignty. The agreement unravelled in due course with Gandhi paying with his life in a suicide attack in India.

All this while, Pakistan not only lent diplomatic support to Colombo but also provided military assistance. Even though they are not geographically linked, the Sri Lankans have since embraced Pakistanis – and not the Indians – as their neighbours of choice.

It is a measure of how much the Sri Lankans value this relationship that, despite the dastardly act by militants on Tuesday, no official in Colombo, no member of Sri Lanka’s cricket board, no player in the Jayawardene-led team that returned home after a miraculous escape, no one from the intelligentsia or among ordinary fans has reacted to the horrific event with anger. After all, it would have been perfectly justifiable to do so. This amazing grace should not go unnoticed.

If the Pakistani government has a conscience – doubtful given the brazen lapses in security at its end – it should immediately move to honour the Sri Lankan team with at least the Nishan-i-Shujaat (Order of Bravery). This is the least the Government of Pakistan can do after letting the moment to offer an official apology to Sri Lanka pass.

The incident is nothing short of a national shame for us regardless of the nature of the beast that we are dealing with, especially given the fact that intelligence about the possibility, style and even the route likely to be used for such an attack was available as far back as January this year.

President Zardari can be sure that even a belated step such as awarding the Nishan-i-Shujaat to the Sri Lankan team would be much more welcomed by Pakistanis than, say, awarding the Hilal-i-Quaid-i-Azam to the likes of Richard Boucher for his ‘services’ in boosting ties with Islamabad.

A deadly missile attack on Pakistani soil by US forces less than 24 hours after receiving the honour with the portrait of Jinnah in the background was Mr Boucher’s chosen expression of gratitude.

We can be certain that the Sri Lankans would be more considerate and we may be able to even retain more than just a sporting contact with the islanders. So let’s hail the heroes with the award on March 23, along with our own policemen who lost their lives in the line of duty on March 3.

This blog has become a living example of abominable mental status of quite number of individuals. I never thought even in an anonymous blog things can go this low.

We may loose our sanity temporarily in a heat of an argument but there should be a certain level above the threshold to maintain our status as humans. When you go below that you are only an animal of the worst kind.

that is the reason buddhism is known as a 'refined version' of hinduism. buddhists have seen the damage hindus can do themselves and others over thousands of years. it is the antipathy towards hindus that make sri lankan buddism strong.

BloggerDefence;

I first thought that you're seriously the new defence blog in town.

But there should be some truth behind the fact that nobody accepted your invitation. I have this gut feeling that you're up to no good. I am sure many people would agree with me here. Your aggression and pavement like authorship selling does not fit for a genuine noble agenda.

So I removed you from my favorite list. For the time I read your site, I did not find much importance anyway.

you are here rooting for a group that not only systematically abuse all known rights of even children. you are also batting for a group that deliberately bombed 4 most venerated places of Buddhist worship starting from Nagadeepa.

this is a measure of the values you inherited from your culture. that is why you have no shame and quite proud of it.

We can't go back to square one and argue all over again. What happen was that Sinhalese forced Tamils to do some drastic counter-measures which were simply wrong ones but those slowed down the further killings of Tamils by Sinhalese.

Whatever it is, I'm simply against any civilian killings.

After spending over 30 years fighting, what's your honest opinion about LTTE laying the arms to save some lives?
Moreover do you think LTTE fundraises can carry on funding for another build up?
(Just looking for your personal opinion)

"We can't go back to square one and argue all over again. What happen was that Sinhalese forced Tamils to do some drastic counter-measures"

was it us who started hacking innocent villagers to death and killing hundreds of unarmed policemen.

was it us who took up arms against a democratically erected government on the needs of a few barbaric separatists.

was it us who tried to distort history and make way for more bloodshed

perein,

I was bit skeptical about LTTE before the Eelam war IV, but not now. You have killed at least 3000 innocent kids and women in Wanni in last 2 months alone and wounded many more 1000s. The civilian casualties backfired big time against GoSL, now more or less all the Tamils are behind LTTE. Now, I see Tamils are LTTEers and vice versa. When SLA is getting military victories, even the moderate Sinhalese became hawkish on this forum that tells if there is no LTTE in SL, Tamils will be nobody there. I'm not hell bent on Tamil separate land but I believe in North and East combined federal solutions and no less.

Unknown said...

"You have killed at least 3000 innocent kids and women in Wanni"

was it us who forced weapons into their hands put them in bunkers to protect the "high ranking" other tamils..

was it us who killed our own and burnt them and said army did it.. even after these were done deep inside LTTE teritory.

was it us who shot the retreating cadres after battle.

was it us who killed injured cadres and burned after the KILi battles from the fear that SLa would capture them and help them to lead a peaceful life.

you must visit the north and east to get real opinions of the tamils.

velluprabhakaran said...

"imran pandyan" or "imran pundayan"?

prof,

both the same. no diference. it's in the behaviour.

my opinion about the relations of LTTE cock suckers-

all of them should be armed with toilet brushes & sent to ptk.

ha ha ha!

We fought for Eelam and that was the only solution acceptable then.
But now north and east combined federal solution is acceptable. We demand it or else we will start Eelam war V
