LTTE's old tactics no match for the 'new' SL Army

Heavy fighting ensued south of Chalai in general area Mulaitivu when a wave of LTTE infiltrators and attack teams targeted a weak point in the forward marching divisions last morning. The infiltrators were first spotted by the 55 Division as they targeted the boundary of two brigades of the 55 and 58 Divisions. The exact casualties to both sides will be revealed later.

During Oyatha Alaikal 1, 2 and 3, the Tigers successfully collapsed the Army's divisions by attacking them at the seam. This usually results in the two respective Divisions and their affected Brigades, Battalions all the way down to a platoon being split, thus opening up a gap through which the Tigers could flank the Divisions.

But this type of operation requires high morale, manpower and firepower on the part of the Tigers and weak leadership and morale and also inferior field tactics and strategies on the part of the Army, both of which were unavailable yesterday. A tactic like this will have little effect particularly on an Army which has 3 Divisions, 5 Task Forces and a Special Forces Brigade on reserve.

In many of the unfortunate occasions where this has happened to the Army, it happened due to low morale and inferior leadership on the part of some officers. Some Field Commanders-- from Platoon COs upto Brigade COs were concentrating on their own respective unit and not on the counter attack.

Meanwhile the LTTE has started another scam to discredit the Army and to give their fighters a fighting chance. The scam is to pose-off injured fighters as civilians who are handed over to the ICRC inside the civilian safety zone. From there these 'civilians' are registered by the ICRC and handed-over the the Sri Lanka Navy. The Navy will then transport them to Trincomalee Hospital.

Military Intelligence and Naval Intelligence have so far identified 30-40 such fighters from among the 'civilians'. They cannot be arrested or detained nor can they be rehabilitated like surrendees. If they are resettled once recovered from the wounds, there is a possibility that they might operate as insurgents from among the civilians.

Puligal's recent blog post regarding the pix of SLA soldiers and allegations regarding its authenticity together with the VERY STRANGE removal of the said pix from defence.lk site seems puzzling dont you think??..

SOME(NOT ALL) of puligals posts seem plausible or debatable..like the above article..others like 1000's of SLA killed in actionin 4 days or so are utter fantasy creations..

Whats your opinion on this particular pix?..The close-up photo of the dead (soldier/tiger?) APPEARS to be a clean-cut Special Forces/Commando trooper unlike a Tiger who normally wear mustaches..:) and whats one body doing with its hands held upwards???..seems FAKE to me..i'm convinced on this lets see what others think shall we..

US Warns Cambodia of LTTE's Tamil Foundation

Cambodia mulls probe of foundation supporting LTTE
www.chinaview.cn
2009-03-09

"PHNOM PENH, March 9 (Xinhua) -- The Cambodian government was considering to investigate the actions of a local foundation which allegedly supported Sri Lanka's separatist Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam, said national media on Monday.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation has sent a letter to Interior Minister Sar Kheng to request him to do so, said English-Khmer language newspaper the Cambodia Daily.

The foreign ministry received a diplomatic notice from the U.S. Embassy warning of the existence of the U.S.-based Tamil Foundation, the paper quoted the letter dated Feb. 26 as saying.

"Please, Minister, be informed about the organization and take measures to investigate the actions of this organization," said the letter, while not elaborating whether the Tamil Foundation was known to be active within Cambodia.

In July 2007, international security magazine the Jane's Intelligence Review reported that Cambodia was a significant source of weapons for the Tamil Tigers, but failed to mention its sources.

The Cambodian government denied it at the time, saying that Cambodia had destroyed many of its surplus arms and that the report referred to the situation before 1998. "

The proposed IMF facility for balance-of-payments problems will supplement the government’s efforts to stabilise the external sector performance of the country. As per the Governor of CB, the conditions of the facility are in line "with the government’s own policies" and would not be on “unpalatable” conditions. If this is the case then there is an acknowledgment that conditions such as those to which ponna Ranil agreed to, on which his Regaining Sri Lanka document was drawn upon -(a document which simply lacked explanation of what we were trying to regain implying its extent of failure)-are not welcomed by Sri Lankans any more.

However, if the government is to still stick with its policy of kicking IMF ass, then it should negotiate this loan for the time being(just take the 60 million-out of the 1.9 bn, on immediate offer ) and look for other means of financing / alternatives in due time. As sakkili land shrinks- increasing SL’s resource bases, economy will in fact recover in the long run. Also funds pledged by co-chairs of the donor nations will be available for post war reconstruction.

The debt/ GDP ratio in countries like japan(170%) and Singapore (96%) are close or more than 100% of their GDP. These countries are not bothered about government debt and are not reluctant to administer deficit budgeting. Thus, government debt is not a problem as long as the government ensures an uninterrupted cash flow and avoiding the so-called debt trap as predicted by many UNP biased economists .

THE IMPLICIT BOTTOM LINE HERE IS TO FINISH THE WAR ASAP.

Challai still under siege.

LTTE sent 21-person team into the enclosed area on Monday morning. Heavy fighting ensued; 16 of the team died in action; five managed to return.

Photos published on DefenceLK/ArmyLK included SLA dead stacked amongst bodies of dead LTTE cadres.

Meanwhile, 55th Division is firing artillery in all directions, a show of desperation reminiscent to that of the EPS siege.

Unless SLN comes-up with a radical initiative, 55th Division will wither within the next month.

Col. Lawrence and Col. Keerthi are commanding the operation. Seran Unit and Jeyanthan Unit cadres are involved, along with a significant number of Sea Tigers.

I too saw the Puligal article on the Defence.lk photo.
The first dead soldier has an SLA typical look, but I sure there are many LTTE carders resembling typical Sinhalese as well.
As Puligal claim the photo was replaced after the article appeared, but as the statement is part of the main article, not a later added portion, it is clear the photo was removed before the article appeared. So either Defence.lk knew about the Puligal release or the switched the picture for some other reason.
Few soldiers seems to mock the dead towards the rear of the picture, maybe the reason to remove it.
One comment at puligal was about the office having a different boot than the soldiers. He hasn’t noticed that all almost all the dead LTTE fighters are minus boots these days? Is it because survived cadres rob the boots of the dead or SLA robbing boots? More like LTTE has failed to provide them with boots.
Is Diaspora only fund for guns, not for personal protection of their fighters. I saw only one dead Ltte fighter warring body protection.

SLA deaths in the past 3 days is less than 50, LTTE deaths over 200. They launched another attack on 55th today, trying to emulate Ceaseless Waves, but without much success. Unlike in the past, the SLA isn't holding onto territory at all costs, objective is to kill as many pigs as possible, thus they yield territory and allow the attacker to advance and employ defence in depth, hence the high kill rate, we are doing exactly what the LTTE did to us in the past!

We have shifted focus from PTK after capture of PTK junction, capture of that junction denies them many escape routes, no point thundering into PTK town with high casualties when the main battles are in the eastern side.

Anything is possible these days as some are suffering from some kind of hysterias. Some say 1000s of SLA killed. If one can put that video showing bodies being pulled out of the back of a truck (including at least one alive at the time), surely some dead SLA bodies is not a big deal. Unless there is no kill to show. Lot of people want to see tigers' handy work, please.

2) Now Take a pan, preferably earthen ware pot
3) Add oil
4) Add mustard seeds
5) Let the mustard seeds pop, then add chopped red onions, garlic, green chillies and curry leaves, add a few pieces of tomato chunks (optional)
6) Fry until onions are golden brown
7) Add thick coconut milk and a few fenugreek seeds, red chilli flakes, yellow powder (kaha kudu) and non roasted curry powder (optional and very little of it)
8) Allow to boil
9) Then add dhal
10) Simmer for a few minutes

Yes, now eelam is over. But remember that the LTTE won most the battles in Eelam war III. So claiming "LTTE never had the power to defeat SLA." is simply incorrect. Lets assume that the LTTE did not use their best fighters or main battle tanks or most of their boats when they attacked Jaffna due to VP being too cautious. If they had used everything they had then and this would have been enough to take Jaffna, then the war would have been very different.

Yes, the army was much stronger at the start of eelam war IV than at the end of eelam war III. But so was the LTTE then since they had used the whole peace period to arm themselves.

At Jaffna LTTE could have, if VP had not been so afraid, brought everything they had against only a relatively small part of army. Remember also at that time the LTTE had many infiltrators and weapons inside Jaffna due to the A9 being open. Effectively crushed now then but very differently back then.

Not saying that the LTTE would have won. That is for historians to debate when more data have been declassified.

Sure, the army would have always have won an war if having good leaders due to the smaller resources of the LTTE. But if Jaffna had fallen and the LTTE could thus increase its conscription base by many times while making blockading very difficult it may have required conscription also in the south to win the war.

Remember that in 2006 there were less troops in Jaffna and there were many infiltrators. Let us say that the LTTE had attacked with 10,000 men instead of 1,500. Also included their battle tanks and all of their elite troops and used all of their boats, many hundred if including the fishing boats, for landing troops.

The LTTE would still have been outnumbered but they would only face a small part of the army and odds that were not impossible, just very difficult.

Think-tank calls on LTTE to negotiate surrender

March 10th, 2009 - 11:32 am ICT by IANS -

Brussels, March 10 (IANS) The humanitarian crisis in Sri Lanka’s northern Wanni region is rapidly becoming a catastrophe, the International Crisis Group (ICG) has warned and called on the Tamil rebels to surrender, EuAsiaNews reported Tuesday.
In a report Monday, the ICG said an estimated 150,000 civilians were trapped in an ever shrinking space, forcibly held back by the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) and exposed to indiscriminate attacks by the Sri Lankan military.

“The Sri Lankan military has already achieved its military objectives and essentially won the war. It must not pursue a strategy of annihilation,” the Brussels-based think-tank said.

“The Sri Lankan government must hold off on the final assault to allow adequate supplies of food, water and medical aid to reach the civilian population and to let those civilians who wish to leave to do so.”

“The LTTE has been defeated and must surrender,” the ICG said, adding that the group’s current actions demonstrated its “utter disregard for the Tamil people”.

“The international community should send its strongest possible messages to the LTTE that it must negotiate a surrender. In exchange, key international parties should commit to supervise the surrender and to guarantee the physical protection of any surrendered fighters.”

On the other hand, if the LTTE continues to use civilians as a human shield and forcibly recruit children and adults, the report suggests that its leadership should face international justice for its serious war crimes.

International leaders, in particular the UN secretary-general, Indian prime minister and the president of the US, must press for these actions immediately, the ICG stressed.

[18 Tamil youths arrested in outskirts of Colombo]

Way to go Sri Lanka. It is imperative that we stop giving LABELS like 'LTTE' to Tamil terrorists. We cannot waste time analyzing if these terrorists are indeed LTTE.

Suspects should be photographed, finger printed and their assets need to be recorded for future confiscation, if convicted.

A terrorist is a terrorist, and only good terrorist is a dead terrorist.

At least now... realistic Sri Lankans need to see how many forces are AFTER US... to grab our resourceful land.

We MUST jettison out-of-date systems and introduce all new laws and regulations for the great country.

If we cannot defeat the terrorism, it's our weakness... not the strength of Tamil terrorists.

[* US doesn't want to advocate talks with LTTE - Ambassador Blake ]

Mr. Blake... It is now time to apply brakes on your unsolicited involvement in Sri Lanka's internal affairs.

Do you expect us to TALK to Tamil terrorists, even if you ADVOCATED doing so?

When, where and how did you qualify to advise us, proud Sri Lankans?

[Military Intelligence and Naval Intelligence have so far identified 30-40 such fighters from among the 'civilians'. They cannot be arrested or detained nor can they be rehabilitated like surrendees. If they are resettled once recovered from the wounds, there is a possibility that they might operate as insurgents from among the civilians.]

is it really true?

if anything SLA nor SL police always kill tamils if they even had a little suspicion they r linked to ltte

i dont believe the above statement

this is DW thinking inside his head then writing it :)

Sri Lanka dusts off the begging bowl
Sri Lanka's bill for its war on rebels, declining exports and a failing currency policy have forced an about-face from the government as it seeks US$2 billion from the International Monetary Fund. A boast that Colombo had access to cheap credit without conditions now looks bankrupt

The country had $1.7 billion in gross official reserves at the end of December, sufficient just for 1.5 months of imports, compared with more than $3.5 billion a year earlier.

Senior economist Sirimal Abeyratne from the University of Colombo told Inter Press Service (IPS) that the financial crisis is so acute that Sri Lanka had few choices. ''Otherwise, why ask for money if we have money, particularly from an institution [IMF] that the government didn't want,'' he said.

Hugh Bredenkamp, deputy director of the IMF's strategy, policy and review department and one of the study's authors, said that Ghana and Sri Lanka are good examples of the relatively few low-income countries that, prior to the crisis, had began to get access to international financial markets to help finance their budgets.

Bredenkamp said both countries were hit as the markets essentially shut down. Sri Lanka has seen the spreads on its international borrowing rise to essentially prohibitive levels.

At the same time, both countries have seen foreign investors exiting from their domestic bond markets. So those two avenues for financing budgets are now drying up, Bredenkamp said in the report.

Weerakoon says the swaps and diaspora funds do not work in the short term, a view shared by bank governor Cabraal. ''We have exhausted access to domestic borrowing and international markets [or it has dried up]

conomist Abeyratne said Sri Lanka was in a debt trap, where one had to borrow to pay off debts. ''We are down to our lowest levels. , the government paid close to half a billion dollars in debt payments and this year it will be higher. So we are borrowing to pay off our debt - which is where part of the $1.9 billion IMF facility will go.''

Weerakoon said the debt payments will increase this year once some central bank bonds expire and payments are made. There was also payment to be made to Iran for an oil credit line, she said. ''There is quite a list of payments.''

last two days were busy days.. close to 2000 civilians have managed to escape terra clutches. almost all of them through the eastern FDL manned by 58/53 divs.

all though the main FDL is about 3-4 kilks westwords of the NFZ, groups of SF snipers are deployed almost to 400m of the NFZ.

They have taken down 13 targets yesterday alone.

now both 53/58/55/59 are sending sniper teams to hunt down terras guarding escape routes for the civilians.

civilian informants have managed to tip off the recent bomb laden truck departures from within the civilian settlements. Thats how SLA managed to stop any infiltrations easily.

air sorties are done on a daily basis. atleast 2 sorties only from the Kfirs.

further 7 bodies of infiltrators were found in a jungle patch south of puthu. the 50 or so members that managed to breakthru 58 FDL had broken into groups of 10. The guess is about 10 still survive. This group was hunted by Tf4 troops.

Colonization:

(Thanks for Dinky Winky and Wijayapala for their responses.)

It is time to do another round of so called colonization. We need to re-settle Sinhalese back in villages created by our ancient kings without disrupting the land occupied by Tamils.

All the provinces in Sri Lanka has to have a uniform ethnic composition. This will ensure each and every person in Sri Lanka get an equal share of access to opportunities. It is time to invite Sinhalese back in to the provinces of N and E. Most importantly, equal ethnic distribution will reduce future crisis related to the territorial integrety of Sri Lanka.

One of the the best way to do this population redistribution of creating permanent military bases in these areas and providing the heroic Sri Lankan soldiers well needed land that was used by their ancestors around the lakes created by ancient Sinhalese kings.

At the end, these areas will see a development benefiting both Sinhalese and Tamils in the area.

This is Sri Lanka for new ages - think about it. Don't let anyone tell you you can't. We were told so many 'you can't' and we have risen above them.
