Rathnam Master's last stand

Task Force 8 finally reached the Puthukudirippu junction yesterday. Fighting still continues in the major part of the town as the density of LTTE fighters has increased due to loss of terrain.

Advance of FIBUA units is conducted at dawn or dusk as Tigers occupying civilian houses and public buildings direct heavy volumes of 12.7mm and mounted 23mm and 30mm canon fire at the advancing units. Often taking cover inside buildings is hazardous due to trappings.

Many of the infamous LTTE leaders have all been relegated now. The man leading the battle against the Army is Rathnam Master, the LTTE's head of Military Intelligence. Rathnam Master was a personal bodyguard of Prabha and perhaps his closest and most capable commander right now. With orders to shoot any deserters, Rathnam Master's ruthlesness seems to be keeping the other Tiger leaders in line.

The former head of LTTE Military Intelligence, Charles was killed by Major Lalith Jayasinghe, 3 Special Forces Special Reconnaissance/LRRP. Poddu Amman and Kapil Amman are the respective heads of the LTTE's Secret Intelligence.

Unlike Secret Intelligence units, Military Intelligence teams of the LTTE have always been distinguished by a strike capability. This means that not only do they collect intelligence but act on that intelligence as one unit.

Many of the successful LTTE attacks in government controlled areas were coordinated by this unit. The only compatible unit in the Army to LTTE Military Intelligence was the SP/LRRP teams who operated with Army Intelligence units (MIC).

Rathnam Master wasn't identified for years due to the secretive nature of his operational engagements. Poddu Amman's image was released by the media and Kapil Amman, a baldheaded middleaged man was identified some time ago as well. But a photo of Rathnam Master wasn't found until two weeks ago when an album abandoned by the Tigers gave away his identity.

Rathnam Master was the man behind the Anuradhapura airbase and Vavuniya SFHQ attacks. The Army has been studying him for years, particularly since he was appointed the head of Ratha Regiment, Prabha's own protection unit and special operations group.

"This is glass half empty view. Migration has resulted number of good things. When the unemployment is high, migration bring opportunities for those who are sitting in the bench."

Sri Lanka actually has a shortage of skilled personnel for the job market. I know this is being preached many a time but 13 years of investment for education spent by the government on a person will be gone to waste if she/he migrates.

you have to accept the hard fact that the majority (close to 90%) of migratees into western countries do not keep ties in an economic level with sri lanka. They go, they settle down and all their Labor is integrated into the respectful countries. Their spending, earning, saving will not help the Lankan economy.

migration does not actually help those sitting in the bench it actually puts sri lanka based companies in a spot of bother. When the Skilled personnel who actually can contribute to their activities decides to migrate they are left with the rest.
And because the education system does not churn out enough educated persons to the labor force( most probably due to the negative view on private universities)this has a very negative effect on the growth.

Just read the sunday observer JObs section. It will greatly support my argument on skilled personel. The irony is migration of skilled workers actually contribute to the unemployment factor.

In a scenario where this migrated labor force actually works in sri lanka.. Growth will not be hampered, businesses will grow on the way making job opportunities to the low skilled workforce.

Migration can hurt in certain situations. Doctors are the best example not the Engineer, accountant, or biologist.

In my case, I couldn't find a job in Sri Lanka and had no choice but leave. My migration was really a benefit to Sri Lanka. There were number of people in my situation.

In the suburb I am living in Sri Lanka, the quality of life in almost all homes have been elevated during last few decades since someone is working abroad. Now the second generation is being educated better than their predecessors thanks to someone living abroad. People can't migrate forever. Today's graduate will have hard time migrating.

The shortage is I think is in the result of not anticipating potential issues and not catering. It is easy to blame for migration since that is something we can relate with.

I actually think lot of Sri Lankans in the west have kept economic ties to Sri Lanka. The state I live in (a smaller one) has contributed over $2mil after Tsunami just through Sri Lankans. There are hundreds of houses to prove my point. The Sri Lankans in US may have helped to bring over $50 mil easily to Sri Lanka. Now, that is a direct benefit of migration.

Almost every one that I Know has a project in Sri Lanka. Some will donate prosthetic, some will help build temples, libraries, etc. Once I had a half an hour conversation with a book publisher in SL and after two weeks, her company donated over $25,000 worth books to our schools.

I am not saying migration helps Sri Lanka. What I am saying is it is not as worst as you think.

Another LTTE propoganda from Reuters saying Sri Lanka is on full collapse

Sharp fall in Sri Lanka tea exports

COLOMBO (AFP) — Sri Lanka, one of the world's biggest tea exporters, registered a 30 percent drop in overseas sales in January because of a decline in the crop, the Sri Lanka Tea Board said on Thursday.

Sales from tea shipments fell to 6.9 billion rupees (61.37 million dollars) in January, compared to 9.8 billion rupees in the same period a year earlier, official figures showed.

Volumes of tea exports also fell 25 percent to 17.76 million kilograms (39.07 million pounds) in January, over the same month in 2008, the board said.

"We are reeling from twin effects of lower rainfall and a deliberate effort to curtail our own production. This has hit our exports in terms of volumes and earnings," Tea Board chairman Lalith Hettiarachchi told AFP.

Russia and former Soviet republics are the largest markets for Sri Lankan tea, accounting for nearly a fifth of total exports, followed by the Middle East and North Africa.

Sri Lanka benefited from the global commodity boom in early 2008, with export earnings hitting a record 1.23 billion dollars for the full year, up from 1.02 billion dollars in 2007.

Tea output also hit a record 318.47 million kilos, up from 305.2 million kilos produced in 2007.

However, with the onset of the global economic meltdown, prices have collapsed to an average of 2.65 dollars a kilo (1.20 dollars a pound) from record highs of 4.26 dollars a kilo between January and September last year.

Growers have also curbed output at the request of the Tea Board to manage high production costs and maintain quality.

The first signs of a drop in the crop were seen in December when output fell by a third to 19.9 million kilos from 29.5 million kilos in the same month a year earlier, Hettiarachchi said.

He expects production to slow down to just over 300 million kilos this year, partly due to high labour and fertiliser prices.

Sri Lankan banks expand in former Tiger territory

Mar 05, 2009 (LBO) – Sri Lanka's two biggest banks, state-owned Bank of Ceylon (BOC) and the private listed Commercial Bank, plan to expand in areas of the island's north and east which have been cleared of Tamil Tiger rebels.
Gamini Wickramasinghe, chairman of BOC, said the bank will be establishing eight more branches in the north and east in the next two months.

"Three new branches will be opened in the Northern Province and five more branches will be opened in the Eastern Province, before the end of April."

Currently the bank has 17 branches operating in the north and 17 in the eastern province.

Wickramasinghe said the bank's outlets in the former northern rebel strongholds of Killinochchi, Manukulam and Mullaitivu had been functioning almost non-stop for the last 25 years.

"Most of the branches that existed in the troubled zones have run at a loss. It’s the service we want to provide, we are not there just for the money."

The army has driven the Tigers out of all the main towns of the north and east and cornered them in a small patch of land on the island's north-east coast, where the reels face imminent defeat.

The government has said it was to revive the economy of the north and east quickly to provide employment for displaced people and help them resume normal life, as well as re-integrate the regional economy with the rest of the country.

Bank of Ceylon's expansion program is part of the government's economic revival programs for the north and east, said Wickramasinghe.

"The ground level requirements have to be met for the people."

BOC has one of the largest networks in the island consisting of 305 branches, 132 extension offices and eight pawning centres. Over 300 of its branches provide online banking facilities.

BOC has overseas branches in the United Kingdom, India and the Maldives Islands.

Sri Lanka's largest private bank, Commercial Bank is also eyeing the eastern province as part of its branch expansion rollout.

"We are seriously considering opening a new branch in Kalmunai this year and two other locations in the future," said Richard Rodrigo, head of marketing at Commercial Bank.

"Commercial Bank is seeking regulatory (central bank) approval to setup new branches in those areas."

He said that finding suitable locations and infrastructure to start operations in the former war zone would be a challenge.

Most of the infrastructure has been destroyed or damaged in the fighting.

Commercial Bank has a network of over 160 branches island-wide.

Sri Lanka says foreign investment US889mn in 2008

Mar 05, 2009 (LBO) – Sri Lanka had received 889,9 million US dollars of foreign direct investments in 2008 which includes a 136.72 million US dollar loan, the island's investment promotion agency said.
The Board of investment said the investments in ventures approved by it were up 21 percent from the US dollars 734 million recorded last year.

Telecoms led the tables with 553.09 million US dollars, followed by power generation at 87.86 million and housing 19.854 million. The infrastructure category received a total of 660.8 million US dollars.

Manufacturing received 189.2 million US dollars with textiles, apparels and leather getting 72.28 million US dollars.

Chemicals petroleum and plastic, received 39.9 million US dollars, food beverages and tobacco 14.7 million US dollars, fabricated metals 14.3 million US dollars, non metallic mineral products 14.3 million, wood products 2.2 million, paper and printing 0.4 million and other manufactured products 32.4 million US dollars.

Services received 36.2 million US dollars with information technology and business process outsourcing bringing in 14.0 million, hotels and restaurants 3.0 million and other services 19.1 million US dollars.

The agriculture sector received 2.6 million US dollars.

Sri Lanka February inflation falls to 7.6-pct

Feb 27, 2009 (LBO) - Sri Lanka's inflation in the 12 months to February 2009 measured by the revised Colombo Consumer Price Index (CCPI) fell to 7.6 percent from 10.7 percent in January, the government statistics office said.
In the month of February inflation fell 0.1 percent with the index falling in absolute terms from 203.1 in January to 202.9 in February.

The moving average of the index, which is a lagging indicator, fell to 20.3 percent in February from 21.6 percent in January.

Tight monetary policy by the central bank and the effects of global deflationary conditions are bringing down inflation which had shot to a record near 30 percent in the middle of 2008.

Central Bank Governor Nivard Cabraal said last week that Sri Lanka's 12-month inflation would fall to around eight percent in February and that year-end inflation would be in single digits, "closer to 5.0 percent than 10.0 percent".

Falling inflation, he said, would allow the regulator to relax monetary policy.

However Sri Lanka is now in the middle of a severe balance of payments crisis, and the Central Bank has made unprecedented liquidity injections to the market.

The current exchange rate is seen as being under strain and increasingly undefendable by a central bank that is rapidly running out of foreign reserves.

Economic analysts say there is an inflation overhang in the economy which would be reflected in the inflation index as the exchange rate adjusts.

සීතල,

I accept that some migratees continue econmic ties with sri lanka. As a good example we can see the sri lankan labor force employed in the middle east.. They work there. There money comes to lanka which in turn is identified as the main source of income in sri lanka.

Yes some people help sri lankan community by building temples and various other infrastructure. But it does not even come close to filling the vacuum they left in sri lanka when they migrated in the first place. You have to accept the fact that majority of the people who have moved to other countries will not come here again.

If u are not married and in a western country "and" you have citizenship there, will you come here again? (you will come but only for the bride.. ) I mean when u are still in a capable age to positively contribute to the work force?

duzz, brother....I don't have to soothe myself, or feel guilty about anything; during my life I have pulled the Sri Lanka wagon harder than anyone else I know.

At the time I left Sri Lanka, there were no decent fulfilling engineering jobs to be had in Sri Lanka for Mechanical Engineers... it was all largely unrewarding make work. My parents paid for my primary education, it was not free. My BSc(Eng) degree at U. Peradeniya was free, and I worked several years in Sri Lanka as required, before I left. I left Sri Lanka for post-graduate studies on my own with a university fellowship I received from a US university, fully intending to return. I was promised a Sri Lanka govt. scholarship, which never materialized due to political corruption. Yes, I stayed in the US because I was very well treated here, even though I was a foreigner, and have done well both professionally and financially.

But, I didn't forget Sri Lanka; never have, never will. I have helped family members, friends and absolute strangers in Sri Lanka much more by working in the US than I could ever have done working as an engineer in Sri Lanka. I have opened doors for Sri Lankan students, and have brought investments and businesses to Sri Lanka and have invested over a third of my life savings in Sri Lanka. I am still busily engaged in doing that and helping the motherland.

Please don't jump to conclusions so quickly about people you barely know.

Senior Tiger leaders desert ranks as troops make the final push

Prabha sends Puli, Illanthiriyan to the front as punishment

In almost every war, whenever one side gets beaten by the other, fighters on the weaker side lose their morale and make attempts to leave the organization and flee to safer areas or surrender. This type of situation has prevailed in the numerous wars the world has witnessed. Fighters of the losing side disillusioned by the losses they suffer continue to desert the organization while the side that is winning tends to get more and more joining in.

The present situation in Sri Lankan is the same. During the last three decades of war, the security forces have experienced both types of scenarios. When the troops captured Jaffna town in 1996, there were a large number of youths willing to join the armed forces to fight the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE).

On the contrary when the troops lost the areas captured by them, there was a significant decrease in the number of youths joining the forces. For example, as the troops withdrew from Mankulam to Vavuniya three days after capturing the area after the ‘Jayasikuru operation,’ statistics show that there was a reduction in the number of youths who wanted to join the forces while a number of soldiers deserted.

Mr. Navindran:

You seem to be really concerned about Sri Lanka Economy. Thank you very much.

Such dedication, enthusiasm and concern beyond my imagination and always should be recognized and credits due should be given.

It makes me feel how limited I am in all of these wonderful qualities.

But, can I ask you some favor, very humbly, Sir? Could you please direct one billionth of your dedication, commitment and enthusiasm exhibited for Mother Sri Lanka towards Rescue of Tamil Civilians.

You and I both know that they are taken hostage, asking Sri Lanka for ransom. Sir, this must worry you. Since they are demanding Sri Lanka as ransom, this is bad news for Sri Lankan Economy.

You being a person so concerned of Sri Lankan Economy, I can feel how furious you are now.

I admire your passion, sir.

But, watch your blood pressure, sir. Coronary thrombosis is very common among dedicated people like you, sir.

I merely appeal you to divert just a billionth (not any more than this, sir) of your energy towards the Rescue of Tamil Civilians rescue, because we need all most all of your energy directed towards servicing Sri Lanka, sir. I know I look so selfish. I cannot help it, Sir.

I admit, I am mentioning hostage situation just to get you to be even more energetic feeling this ransom business is bad on Sri Lankan businesses, which is your only passion sir.

Shame on me, sir! Since I am taking the risk, by using Civilians as bait to get you to work even harder to save Sri Lankan Economy, you might die, Sir. Please do not die Sir. Take it easy, Sir.

Please do not blame me, sir, that I am an LTTEer who is trying to get your attention away from Sri Lankan Economy by mentioning this useless Tamils, Sir. That is not my intention, Sir. As you are I am dedicated to Sri Lankan Economy, but shamefully not as much as you are, sir.

I am just trying to get your efforts double, Sir.

Watch your blood pressure, Sir. We need your services. We need you sir. Do not die, Sir.

patriots,

i strongly feel that we should air drop food to the safety zone BEFORE any outside joker comes here with bullshit concerns for our ppl.

my letter to MoD.

"............................................The humanitarian situation in 45 sq km of tiger controlled area is appaling. I recon we should air drop food, especially ready-to-eat food to civilians in the safety zone.

I'm the last person to have any humane regard for terrorists and their supporters. In fact this plan is going to make things miserable for tiger administrators who have taken 80,000 people hostage. However, civilian plight may be used by potential interfering vile elements to interfere in Sri Lanka. This is a highly dangerous situation.

In 1987 the first wave of interference came as a humanitarian food drop. Soon they became more involved and ultimately stopped the war just days to go for a historical victory.

This should not be allowed to happen this time from ANY quarter. We should pre-empt this by dropping food to civlian areas, especially cooked food like fish buns. I know this is a big challenge as tigers will attack our air craft. May be we can get assistance from the ICRC, etc. in this effort. This will TOTALLY expel baseless allegations levelled against us by tigers. It will also convince the people that we are in charge (not tigers) and that Sri Lanka VISIBLY care for them.

I read with extreme anger and sadness the unashamed admittance by Tamilnet of their barbaric acts. According to self-admissions, LTTE hoards food including milk packets and give them in return to those who donate blood for injured terrorists. Milk-for-blood! What a barbabric act only ruthless inhumans like the LTTE could do.

I also know that dropping food to their existing places would make them less likely to cross to government areas where they are provided with all necessities and safety. But atleast for once we need to carry this out, I think. Along with food we can also drop leaflets directing civilians to safety in government controlled areas.

We should do this before interfering elements get down to business.

I humbly request you to consider this request and put into action subject to security concerns.

May God Bless You and Protect you. May God be with our soldiers every second and strengthen their resolve to liberate our people who are living in tribal hellholes in the north under LTTE terrorist hostage takers..................."

TO ALL ECONOMIC PUNDITS-

if u really want to look at financial collapse & the sky falling on somebody's head look at wall street.

it's not just a few investment wanks. it's the WHOLE WALL STREET FINANCIAL SYSTEM that's lost the confidence of inevestors. so much for the great american dream.

having said that - now's the time that really smart investors will makw their moves.

WHERE DOES THAT LEAVE OUR BOO PETER, THE INVESTMENT WANKER?
