Army elite search for Prabha and other leaders

Several groups from 1SF and 2 Commando have entered south of Valairmadam yesterday with a few objectives to achieve. The area is encircled by the 53, TF 8 and the 58 Division with the 59 Division south of the Nanthikadal lagoon.

Sources told DefenceWire that the groups have engaged several LTTE vehicles and strong points. The area situated just below the A-35 and spanning about 5kms south towards Nanthikadal lagoon is the last remaining LTTE hideout where LTTE Leader Velupillai prabhakaran and other surviving leaders are thought to be hiding.

Contrary to earlier reports, the Army's latest figures indicate a presence of around 50,000 more civilians trapped in this area. Though keen on escaping towards the SLA line, the LTTE, acting as a barricade, seems to be preventing such movement. The civilians are also scared of the Army due to years of continuous brainwashing by the Tigers.

However, the overall figures of returnees indicate that the recent rescue operation was a success. Within the last 72 hours, over 100,000 civilians have escaped and joined the Army. This brings the total headcount of civilians now in government custody to over 170,000.

The two LTTE translators who surrendered to the Army are expected to make statements to the media shortly. Of them, George, the translator for Thamilselvan, is fluent in both Sinhala and English, in addition to Tamil. The Army was also amazed at the skill demonstrated by three LTTE doctors who also surrendered today. They all expressed amazement at the exceptional treatment they received at the hands of the officers and soldiers of the SLA.

DW,
Thanks for the update. This news is not very good in the long run.

The way things are moving I will not be surprise if VP and all other leaders surrender and go for a law suite. They will start maniac again in another day.
If they managed to surrender, sure to get released as soon as UNP come to power. There are 70 million people (Virtual Tamil Nation) to raise money to get UNP into power and get VP and leaders out from jail.
Sri Lanka do not execute death sentence. I am not happy what is happening now. But what can I do? Is there anything you can do? I do not expect you to reply this. But hope you realize the gravity of the situation 

B.Raman shows his Tiger Stripes and RAW Personality in latest ArticleThis article shows why we must hold INDIA at an arms length from us. Their hegemonic ambitions require the maintenance of FIFTH-COLUMNS within neighboring countries.

LTTE is dying but long live the Tamil cause8. After the final death of the LTTE, which is expected any day, what is the future of the Sri Lankan Tamil cause? Would a Requiem for the LTTE also mean a Requiem for the Sri Lankan Tamil cause? Hopefully not. It is in India’s interest that the LTTE as a terrorist organization is destroyed once and for all, but it is not in India’s interest that the Sri Lankan Government and Armed Forces proceed from the destruction of the LTTE to the destruction of the Tamil aspirations for greater political and economic rights in their traditional homeland and for greater human dignity.

9. Let us not forget that ever since our independence in 1947, the Bengalis of the then East Pakistan, the Balochs and Sindhis of Pakistan and the Tamils of Sri Lanka have been India’s natural allies. It was this reality which persuaded Indira Gandhi to assist the Bengalis of the then East Pakistan to achieve their independence. Even though successive Governments in New Delhi refrained from supporting the causes of the Sindhis and the Balochs, Indian public opinion sympathized and continues to sympathise with their cause. It was sympathy for the Sri Lankan Tamil cause at New Delhi when Indira Gandhi was the Prime Minister and in Tamil Nadu, which induced India to take up their cause in the 1980s.

10.There is no reason why India should not pride itself and seek to be the paramount power of the region. To emerge and remain as the paramount power, we need natural allies in the region around us. We should not let the legitimate aspirations of our natural allies---whether they be the Sindhis and Balochs of Pakistan or the Sri Lankan Tamils--- be crushed by a brutal regime--- whether in Islamabad or in Colombo.

11. Since 1947, the Balochs rose twice in revolt in favour of independence for their homeland. On both occasions, they were defeated by the Pakistani Armed Forces as decisively as the LTTE by the Sri Lankan Armed Forces. The Pakistani leadership brutally used the Air Force against the Balochs to crush their freedom struggle. Undaunted by this, the Baloch people, under a new leadership, rose in revolt for a third time two years ago and their third war of independence is still going on.

12. The remarkable victory of the Sri Lankan Armed Forces against the LTTE was partly due to their improved counter-insurgency and counter-terrorism capabilities made possible by Indian assistance in the form of training and sharing of intelligence and partly due to their emulating the Pakistani Armed forces in the brutal use of the Air Force against people whom they portray as their own. Just as the Balochs were defenceless against the brutal Pakistani air strikes, the Sri Lankan Tamils were defenceless against the Sri Lankan air strikes.

13. The US has used air strikes in Iraq and Afghanistan----but in foreign territory and against foreign nationals. Only three countries in the world have used air strikes in their own territory against their own people---- the Pakistanis against the Balochs, the Russians against the Chechens and the Sri Lankans against the Tamils.

14. President Mahinda Rajapakse has repeatedly promised that once the LTTE is defeated, he would be generous in meeting the political aspirations of the Tamils. He gives the impression of being a sincere man, but will the Sinhalese Army with its head bloated by its success against the LTTE allow him to do so? The indicators till now are not encouraging. Many Sri Lankan officers might have been trained in India, but their mindset and their attitude towards the minorities have more in common with those of their Pakistani counterparts than with those of their Indian counterparts. Therein lies the danger that after winning the war against the LTTE, the Government, strongly influenced by a victorious army, might trey to impose a dictated peace on the Tamils.

15. If the angry Tamils once again look up to India, there is no reason why we should not reciprocate provided a new leadership emerges in the Tamil community and it has drawn the right lessons from the brutalities of the LTTE.

16. The LTTE is deservedly dying, but long live the Tamil cause. (22-4-2009)

Dialogue with DBS Jeyaraj on his recent ArticleNOTE: I read the article he referred me to, but that did not change my assessment. He still has quite a ways to go.

111. Ananda-USA | April 22nd, 2009 at 1:32 pm

Dear Mr. Jeyaraj,

I commend you on a well written article, with some reservations on several statements that show your bias against the Government of Sri Lanka. The GOSL has to eradicate the LTTE entirely from Sri Lanka NOW, so all of us can go back to enjoying our rights to life, liberty and happiness, as we did before all of this murder and mayhem was unleashed upon us by the Tamil separatists.

Although I commend you for your opposition to the violent methods of the LTTE, my objection to your views go deeper…to your support for the imagined “grievances of the Tamils” in Sri Lanka. Tamil grievances in Sri Lanka are largely manufactured ones, engineered to exploit the military weakness of Sri Lanka, and support available from Tamil Nadu and India, to carve out a separate mono-ethnic country in which the Tamil community would have greater rights than they would have in a multi-cultural multi-racial multi-religious Sri Lanka. In short, the Tamil separatists did not want to live as equals in Sri Lanka with the other communities; they considered themselves special and wanted more than the lesser beings around them. In your writings, I consistently detect this attitude and overt and covert support for that separatist goal.

My vision for Sri Lanka is that of a country populated by people of one SriLankan identity. One people, one nation, one destiny, equal rights and responsibilities for all to be achieved through policies that promote ethnic integration, not national disintegration. No Eelams whatsoever. I fervently hope that the Tamil community can give up those separatist ideas and begin to reintegrate themselves into the fabric of Sri Lanka as they had to a large extent before this violence began. They will find that we Sinhalese are waiting to welcome them back to the fold with open arms.

Having read your writings in the past, I know you will not agree with much of what I have said here, but I can live with that.

Regards,

Ananda-USA

DBSJ RESPONDS: If an educated man like you thinks the Tamils and other minorities have no legitimate grievances or aspirations needing to be redressed and accommodated there is no room for discussion. Its a waste of time, energy and space to argue and counter argue on these matters. The only point I want to mention is that you are totally wrong in making assumptions or presumptions about me in the way you’ve suggested.

If you have time please read my article “Sri Lankan Tamils and 61 years of Independence” posted on this site.

BBC

Eyewitness: 'I thought, I won't survive'
Almost 100,000 civilians have fled the war zone in northern Sri Lanka. Journalists are generally not given access to fleeing civilians. But Swaminathan Natarajan of the BBC's Tamil service managed to speak to Vinoo, a young mother who made this difficult journey and is now in a government-controlled camp in Vavuniya.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

We were staying near Puttumatalan hospital. On the night of the 20th there was heavy shelling. I thought, I won't survive. There was continuous shelling from midnight to the early morning.

Many civilians have made a harrowing journey from the war zone
During that time we took shelter inside a bunker. At around 6am, when I came out of the bunker, I saw people running all around amid shelling.
I also joined them. But soon I got injured in the legs and arms. My husband got injured in his head.

Some shrapnel is still inside his head. Still, we came out of the LTTE (Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam)-controlled area along with our son.

My mother and brother also started with us, but I don't know what happened to them. I have lost all contact with them.

The LTTE had built a bund and because of that structure it was difficult to move. People had to walk through neck-deep water.

Some children fell down in the water. It was difficult to cross that area. I don't know how to describe that.

We were trying to escape for the past month. We packed a few of our belongings and tried to escape at an opportune moment.

But we were prevented by the LTTE from escaping from the area.

Once we crossed over to the government-controlled areas we were checked in at a few checkpoints. They completely checked everything. They made a detailed account of the jewels I was wearing and took note of the cash I had with me.

After the checking we were kept in a military camp, in a place called Chalai. From there we were taken to a school. From there we were brought to Vavuniya by bus. Before reaching Vavuniya we were checked again in the Omantai checkpoint.

There has been no proper food for the past three days. Yesterday afternoon we got something to eat. Today, only in the late afternoon, we got food. But the amount is very little. We three shared a single meal.

I have not been given any clothes. So I am still wearing a dress which got wet and is covered by mud and dirt. I have not taken a bath for the past three days. It is very difficult here. My husband's bandage needs to be changed immediately.

In the LTTE-controlled areas life is very difficult. There is a huge shortage of food. There is heavy fighting and many are dying every day. Some days it is difficult to get a single meal. So we planned to escape to the government-controlled areas.

We were not bothered to take any of our belongings. We made three attempts in one month to escape but all of them were thwarted by the LTTE.

Now we have come to safety.

Are you sure you aren't giving away anything when you talk about the operation?

It seems 150k civilian numbers given by International agencies on trapped civilian in NFZ is correct.

Has the government got enough resources to handle that many Tamil civilians?

Is she aware of our previous efforts to end this conflict with LTTE through negotiations. We must say in the loudest possible terms that the entire world is disappointed about her pro terrorist rants these days. Practice what you preach Hillary, you are not welcome in Sri Lanka.

""I think that the Sri Lankan government knows that the entire world is very disappointed that in its efforts to end what it sees as 25 years of conflict, it is causing such untold suffering," Clinton told lawmakers, referring to the thousands of civilians trapped in the war zone."

Can some one explain why we are holding women and children in these camps? Can't we let them go? I mean at least some of them? Just as a PR thing?

If there are relatives who are willing to take them in, then if we keep a record of IDPs and the relatives (All the info about them and maybe give them separate ID cards so that we know who they are).

Just don't see the reason for keeping so many people inside camps and getting very bad PR from all over the world.

Not enough voices are being heard against the Taliban's progress, she added. You know Taliban are freedom fighters and they are our heroes.

Hope they get hold of some big Military installations. That way the world attention would divert to Pakistan.

DW,

Now that few leaders have surrendered, we believe SLA, MI and so forth has interrogated them including the doctors.
Even the other misguided LTTE carder who was trying to escape with the civilians may have interrogated by now.
The few obvious questions should have been, “where is your bloody leader?”, “where did you see last? They should be giving some answers.

What are those answers? We like to hear please.
We never see this question been ask by any of the media personnel from any of the so called civilians either?

What are you hiding?
What is the truth behind this?

These answers may give a clue on the brutal, ruthless, merciless, cruelest murderer Prabakarana’s whereabouts. I mean inside NFZ or not.

This is my comment on the DBS Jayaraj blog (partly in support of Ananda-USA's comment)

127. Nishan | April 22nd, 2009 at 9:54 pm
Reference to Ananda-USA #111 & #115 and others.

I tend to aggree on much of these comments. This is not a Sinhala Budhist view as many LTTE supporters are banging about.

The post-LTTE SL should concentrate on Equal Opportunities. There is no argument whatsoever over the fact that every citizen of Sri Lanka should have an equal opportunity to participate fully in all aspect of his/her life.

It should be remembered that this includes not only enjoying all privileges, but also discharging obligations which come along with the citizenship. The opportunities to get a decent education and other government services, participate fully in political life, freedom to live anywhere in the country and practice one’s religion are top among these.

Things should be based on merit not on one’s race, religion or creed. For example, in selecting someone for a job, the most deserving candidate should be selected based on merit because he/she is the most capable, not because he or she belongs to a certain ethnic group.

What is imperative then is to look at whether the Sri Lanka’s current set up has any impediments or discriminatory practices which prevent certain citizens from availing themselves of these opportunities. The golden principle here must be the equal opportunity i.e. no one should get more and no one should get less.

We need to carefully analyse and find out as to whether minorities, the tamils in particular, are being deprived of the opportunities within the Sri Lanka’s current policy and legal framework. In other words, are there benefits and privileges that are only available for the majority (displaying unequal opportunities)? There aren’t any obvious things to find.

One of the best things that a country can provide its citizens is the individual freedom. All citizens of Sri Lanka should be free to fully contribute and participate in all aspects of the country irrespective of where they live.

Diversity is an asset to any country as much as it is to a region within a country, and it should be cherished. Diversity makes any place an exciting location to live and work in. In this context, the creation of a mono-ethnic and mono-religious region does not sit well. In fact, such establishments are a hindrance to any country’s development and prosperity.

As an example, let’s take Sri Lanka’s universities, places of higher learning for the country’s best and the brightest. It is unfortunate to observe that two of Sri Lanka’s universities have become, by default, mono-ethnic. This clearly is a disadvantage for those students who do not have much interaction with those of different backgrounds and opportunities for other ensuing intellectual debates that they ought to engage in as part of learning.

Mono-ethnic, mono-religious and mono-linguistic societies are unlikely to bring full benefits in the long term in the modern era of globalisation. The world today is becoming more and more a borderless society. In fact, to succeed as individuals, we need to fully interact with others (countries /cultures) and, have the abilities to live among those who are different to you in many ways; racially, religion-wise and speaking languages other than yours. As such, success in these environments can only be achieved through learning to co-exist.

Living in a separate state within a state may not be the hope of all Sri Lankan tamils. There may be various reasons as to why this is so. Tamil people living in parts of the country outside the North and East are unlikely to favour such a set up. Contrary to what LTTE or its supporters may tell and preach, many tamils may argue that an ethnically segregated part might not be the best for them (unless one likes to live his/her whole life in segregation), before it becomes a problem for Sinhalese.

The government’s efforts should be geared towards creating an environment where all ethnic groups can live in Sri Lanka (co-exist) to realise their full potential. This should be about providing an equal opportunity for all, nothing more, nothing less.

As mush as it is a great achievement to win against terrorism, taking every possible step to prevent it happening again ever, is equally important.

You believed that your so called leader will take you to eternity. But now you are partly convinced that there was some mistake. In a day or two you will certainly know that.

You are responsible to the plight of all the sufferings of the people in Wanni. Specially who were now in temporally resettlement camps.

SL government is trying hard to do as much as possible to make them comfortable. But you too can help by contributing in cash direct to rehabilitating parties (not the INGO or NGO) in the SLG.

Time is up for the rich Diaspora relations to send money to feed their own relations liberated from their own ruthless leader who deceived the whole world.

This is my comment on the DBS Jayaraj blog (partly in support of Ananda-USA's comment)Nishan, bro...thank you!

The Tamil separatists, including DBSJ, are starting to chant "legitimate aspirations" and "Tamil grievances" again to get the other Sri Lankans on the defensive, as if other communities do not have "legitimate aspirations" too. That can be satisfied only by holding onto the concept of equal rights and equal responsibilities: no more, no less, and rejecting all other subtle and direct blandishments and appeals for special rights.

Unless we start pushing back, while firmly advocating equal rights and equal responsibilities, and rejecting all forms of special rights based on ethnicity, we will fall back to square one...That MUST NEVER BE ALLOWED to happen.

Thank you again.

Some have interpreted my Comments at this blog as the “Sinhala Majority View” that “the Island belongs exclusively to the Sinhala people.” This is a mischaracterization of what I have said here and elsewhere, and I very much doubt that Sinhala people as a whole espouse that view either. I reject that option, because it would imply disenfranchisement of minorities. In fact, that is precisely the reason the Tamil-only mono-ethnic aparthied racist agenda of the LTTE coupled to their ethnic cleansing activities in Sri Lanka was rejected by ALL OTHER COMMUNITIES. They united and resolved to defeat them, no matter what the cost. The LTTE’s facist attitudes towards the Tamil community accelerated their downfall.

My view, and I believe, that of the Sinhala majority as well, is that the Island belongs to all of us irrespective of our ethnicity and/or religion. As such, everyone in the country should have the right to live and settle wherever they please.

In order to root out separatism by leaf, branch, trunk and root, and prevent its resurgence in the future, the GOSL should adopt a program of ethnic integration as government policy leading to ethnic homogenization of the country. Cultural diversity will not vanish through such ethnic integration; it will exist in its proper sphere in the personal private domain.

Existing laws, modified as needed to alleviate insecurities of minority communities, should be strictly enforced to assure equal rights AND equal responsibilities for all.

If, as the “Tamil grievances lobby” claims (note that I totally reject these claims as false and totally manufactured), lack of equal rights was the causal force behind the Eelam war, then Sri Lankan Tamils have nothing to worry about. They, and every other citizen, will be guaranteed equal rights under law. What they will not have, is a separate region of the country that they can govern as a Tamil Community-only Fiefdom where people of other ethnicities are NOT WELCOME, NOT ALLOWED TO LIVE, AND CHASED AWAY FROM by overt and covert methods.

The federal solution, that some members of the Tamil community in Sri Lanka, in the Sri Lankan Tamil Diaspora and in Tamil Nadu, are gearing up to advocate again, is only the first step towards ultimate partition of the country…I have no doubt about that. After 30 years of war, having been brought to the brink of partitioning the motherland, we instinctively recognize these moves for what they really are: attempts to achieve by strategy and stealth in peace the independent mono-ethnic state the separatists failed to win by murderous war.

SL Armed Forces have done their duty by freeing 100,000+ civilians from the ltte TERRORISTS.

Now it's our duty as SL citizens to look after the wellbeing of our fellow tamil citizens...

We should not stop at just praising the Armed Forces and the Government on this historical rescue mission, but join hands with them in providing a better life for these Tamil people.

Donating material is one way to go, but don’t forget that the GoSL has to spend a large amount of money for this.

It's time for us to strengthen the hands of the GoSL by donating money, so that they we can ease the burden on the GoSL, which is already faced with a tight budget.

I propose the GoSL set up a separate fund for this, 'WANNI MAANUSHEEYA ARAMUDALA' so that all peace loving Sri Lankans can contribute...

When talking of the diaspora supporting LTTE, I think we are ignoring a vital aspect of it. When I see the conditions most people in the LTTE has being living in, it is hard to imagine how these people had been going to UK, US and other Western countries in the first place. They can hardly manage to educate their kids in SL, or afford a decent life under the LTTE. The way those that did manage to leave SL would only have been able to, with the help of the LTTE for both money and forging of documents etc.

It just shows the two tiers of society under the LTTE. The majority that we see being rescued by the army seem to be the serf class that were used by the LTTE without giving them anything in return. The upper class has been funded by the LTTE initially to reach certain goals of financial status and in return provide the LTTE with a portion of their returns. This second segment (mainly the diaspora) has a need to protect the LTTE due to the fact that they are living in western countries through the deals they had with the LTTE. They owe what they have to LTTE, and therefore their loyalty is with the LTTE rather than the overall tamil population.

I believe this reason, that the loyalty of the diaspora is with the LTTE for the above reasons, must be emphasised by our diplomats when responding to their charges. Showing this situation to the tamil civilians who have been suffering under this system in SL and getting their support in it's exposure could also do wonders to correct this injustice against a large group of helpless people by few benefiters as well as improve the image of SL abroad.

INDIA backing Baluch Liberation Army within PakistanYou may recall that B.Raman was advocating further support by India for Tamil Rights within Sri Lanka, in parallel with Indian support for the Baluchs within Pakistan, as well as groups in other neighboring countries.

Apparently, the lesson that terrorism one sponsors in other countries will come home to roost, has still not sunk into the minds of the leaders of India.

India backing Balochistan Liberation Army: Rehman Malik

By Farzana Shah-AsianTribune.com
Islamabad, 23 April

Advisor to Pakistani prime minister on Interior, Rehman A. Malik on Wednesday informed the Upper House of the Parliament that India is backing the Balochistan Liberation Army (BLA) for fuelling insurgency in the province and creating unrest.

Winding up debate on an adjournment motion, to discuss the Balochistan situation in the wake of a recent killing of three Baloch leaders in Turbat, Rehman Malik said "BLA was raised and funded by Russia during Soviet-Afghan war when Pakistan was supporting Afghans and now India is backing its activities."

"BLA remained dormant since the Afghan war ended, but it was reactivated after killing of Nawab Akbar Bugti, whose grandson Barhamdagh Bugti has openly sought Indian and American support for independence of Balochistan in a recent interview," he added.

He said that Indian consulate in Iranian city, bordering Balochistan, was also involved in activities other than granting visa to people.

The BLA Chief Barhamdagh Bugti, in his recent interview to a Pakistani channel has openly sought Indian support for independence of Balochistan, he added.

"Barhamdagh Bugti is residing in Kabul just five kilometer away from President Karzai's palace and Pakistan has continuously been asking the Afghan government for access to Barhamdagh," he said.

However, he said, the Afghan Government has been denying Bugti's presence in Afghanistan, though Pakistan repeatedly raised it with Afghanistan that their soil was being used against Pakistan.

It is to be mentioned here that Pakistan blames Balochistan Liberation Army—a terrorist organisation being funded by India, for terrorist activities in Balochistan province.

Meanwhile the Upper House of Pakistani Parliament decided to hold an in-camera session to discuss Balochistan situation on Thursday (today).

The decision was made during the winding up speech of Advisor on Interior Rehman Malik when he was reading out some secret documents before the House.

Couple of members described it not in favor of the country and its relations with the neighbors. Malik proposed an in-camera session to inform the members on role of the neighboring countries in fueling insurgency in the province.

The House then decided with a consensus to meet in-camera Thursday at 1230 hours.

During his speech Malik had mentioned some of the developments regarding Brahamdagh Bugti, kidnapping of John Solecki and killing of three Baloch leaders in Turbat.

PML-N Chairman Senator Raja Zafarul Haq objected on grounds that the Advisor must care for limitations and the country's relation with its neighbors.

"Every government has a right to defend itself but it is not necessary that all information it has, is always correct. When a minister issues a statement he should be cognisant of his limitation in broader regional perspective and its relations with neighbors," he said.

He said the minister was discussing all the neighbors and was even reading out the secret letters. "Let his statement not create problems for the country. We need to keep our national interest supreme," he said.

Senator Prof Sajid Mir also demanded to disclose the activities of all the countries involved in destabilizing Pakistan. "Let we also not give a clean chit to America, and if they are also involved, we need to name them."

Senator Haroon Akhter also supported Prof Sajid Mir's stance and said, "If any country is involved in destabilizing Pakistan, we should not be shy to name it."

After the debate the matter was put before the House that unanimously agreed to hold an in-camera session on the Balochistan situation today.

They owe what they have to LTTE, and therefore their loyalty is with the LTTE rather than the overall tamil population. Related to your reason is that many Sri Lankan Tamil Diaspora members are in these countries on "refugee status."

If the war ends, and peace reigns in Sri Lanka, the host countries will revoke thier refugee visas and require their returning to Sri Lanka. Most of these people just don't want to give up their incomes and softer lives and go back to Sri Lanka.

Therefore, it is IMPERATIVE for them to keep the CONFLICT in Sri Lanka boiling as long as possible, at least until they acquire permanent resident status. So, they have a VESTED FINANCIAL INTEREST in keeping the Eelam Struggle alive!

This whole thing is riddled with SCAMS and CON-JOBS of one kind or another!

Hi to all patriots,

Like all of you, this blog makes my day. DW files very informative news and reader's comments make it very interesting. However, it seems only a few know about this blog but readership is sufficient to discuss about a topic of importance.

I am a professional based in Colombo but for reasons beyond my control I want to migrate away from Sri Lanka. As much as I am concerned about leaving my elderly relatives, teachers and helpers, I will have great difficulty leaving those brothers/sisters of Security Forces (SF) who have been incapacitated and families of those who paid the supreme sacrifice. Enabled and able bodied Sri Lankans cannot and should not forget them.

After this war comes to an end, I wish civilians like you and me and all of others who did not wage war could come together to support families and those disabled soldiers. I hope the Government would have thought about these matters but Sri Lanka is a funny place - we tend to forget the past when the heat goes down! Another important characteristic is that in a cabinet of ministers numbering well over 100, everyone talks about the war but there is no one to attend to the garbage problem and we are woefully under prepared to deal with the exodus from the wanni. Very quickly, our "ministering angels" will hop around with the begging bowl and then compromise that sacrifice made by SF.

So in Sri Lanka, there is no governance and fortunately for MR, he has GR & SF, otherwise there would not be a blog like this!

Thus, I would like to propose creating a NGO called "Brave Hearts - Clean Hands". I propose we could have a Board of Directors drawn from this blog readership; more important - NGO Finances and Activities will be transparent (to the bone).

The purpose of the NGO is to give lifetime support to the disabled and enabling support to destitute families. But the NGO will not make these people become beggars - no hand to mouth existence supported.

I would like to start it; work free of charge and be totally transparent down to the red cent. By the way, I am not an affluent person and that is the reason I want to migrate to another country but I will organize and contribute from wherever I will work. We could have the DW folks (then the blog will also continue) manage it and even others could propose a Board of Management. No need to have this NGO, if you are comfortable contributing to "Api Wenuwen Api" but I have no faith in anything that the GOSL is doing apart from the war.

Just for your information, I am squeaky clean and have the integrity and a reputation as someone not after the filthy lucre.
And, I am not after prominence or am I aspiring to be a politician.

You are welcome to comment.

My apology if you got tired reading this post and got angry.

Thanks!

From DLK:

Kouchner in Sri Lanka

The French Foreign Minister according to an Island Report of 23.4.09 has suggested a foreign coastal intervention to render assistance to the persons fleeing form the clutches of the LTTE. This could well be a last minute effort to save Prabhakaran from facing consequences for 30 years of terrorist activity. The report further states that Kouchner is seeking British assistance. It is well known that Prabhakaran is trapped and in a few days would be apprehended. At present, Prabhakaran can be saved only by a naval exercise and probably this is uppermost in the mind of the French Minister Kouchner.

It is interesting to dwell into Kouchners background in Sri Lanka. He was in Sri Lanka as an so-called ' Eminent Person' to observe the proceedings at the Presidential Commission. While holding this position, charged into a chamber of a Magistrate in the Eastern Province and demanded to read the proceedings in a case record. This was a matter outside his powers especially to intimidate judicial officers. Thereupon he went on to examine the case records which was a not function entrusted to him. It has drawn critical comment from some of the Commissioners for usurping power.

Counsel who appeared for the Army, Mr Gomin Dayasri who immediately on appearance noted the prejudices the Eminent Persons had against the armed forces. He was extremely critical of their conduct and the Eminent Persons soon withdrew from the proceedings after the appearance of Mr Gomin Dayasri. Before they left they criticised the Commissioners and later revised their opinion to display their inconsistency.

Mr Kouchners loyalty to the LTTE had surfaced prior to the recent incident

Tamil National Liberation Army Leader now canvassing for DMK in Tamil NaduExtremist leader seeks votes for DMKBy George Rajasekaran
April 23, 2009

Suba Ilavarasan, the leader of the banned Tamil extremist organization, Tamizar Vidudhalai Iyakkam, is campaigning for the DMK in Salem and Dharmapuri. Both places are considered hot beds for extreme left groups who hold a staunch pro – LTTE and pro Eelam stance.

The Tamizar Vidudhalai Iyakkam is an offshoot of the Tamil Nadu Liberation Army (TNLA) which was banned for its support to the LTTE.

Ilavarasan told reporters in Salem on Wednesday that he considered the DMK chief Karunanidhi to be more concerned about the welfare of the Tamils, including the Eelam Tamils, than AIADMK chief J Jayalalithaa.

On whether he agreed with the wide- spread view that Congress was anti-Tamil, Illavarasan replied in the negative. “If the Congress was indeed anti-Tamil the people of Tamil Nadu will teach the party a fitting lesson as they did during the Hindi agitation,” he said.

Asked if he would campaign for the Congress candidates he said that a decision on that would be taken at a meeting of his party in Salem on April 24. Presently he is campaigning for the DMK candidate in Dharmapuri constituency, part of which is in the Salem revenue district.

Observers feel that the DMK has chosen Suba Ilavarasan in order to capitalize on his ideological and organizational background to strike a chord with people who have for long been exposed to ultra left political views on the LTTE and Tamil Eelam, lest the anti-Eelam stigma now cast on the DMK proves determinental in the hustings.

Asked if the Tamizar Vidudhalai Iyakkam was still functioning, he said a case to lift the ban is on in the Madras High Court and till then the outfit remains dormant. He said the organization had come to the election path through a series of steps and with the launch of the Tamizar Needhi Katchi, had also reached a ‘certain stage’ in the process of full democratic participation.

Max;

Cool. this is a wonderful idea.

But my two cent's worth on NGOs suggest that to make a big time success, we need to access doners. This is not an underestimation of the pocket-depth of our brothers here. But a functioning NGO is a costly operation and might not be able to work on our kind donations alone.

The doners in the world are the vultures who ask for other plans inside the movement. This is why many good ppl end up working for their agenda. I have friends in NGO. As ppl they are crispy good ppl. But little by little they fulfill the agenda of those vultures. Brainwashed and mouth gagged with dollars maybe.

I hope that there is a way to function w/o falling to that. Count me in for anything.

Also, there is a union of good patriots in LankaPatriots. Ananda can speak on behalf of it I suppose.

BTW, for the moment let's start with Ranaviru kids. I was having a leaky pocket which will be sorted by end April. Immediate after that I am gonna start with at least one ranaviru kid sponsership. I wanna share any financial glory of mine with them.

Of course for those who live abroad that is a mere drop of a visit to night club or pizza hut. Start dieting and reduce alcohol and save that money for them. Gains both ways.

Let's do something anyway.

HERE IT COMES: US Wants Military Presence in PakistanRecently, the Pakistani Govt. ceded control over the Swat Valley to the Taliban, where they introduced Sharia Law. Yesterday, the Taliban announced that they would extend their control outside the Swat Valley...as they see fit, causing great alarm in the Pakistani Govt. I predicted then that the US would soon feel compelled to intervene to prevent a creeping Taliban takeover of Pakistan.

Apparently the powers that be Washington DC CONCUR!US seeks increased military ties with PakistanIANS, Washington
April 23, 2009

Saying it wanted to move beyond a transactional relationship, the US says it wants to ramp up military
ties with Pakistan to help combat militancy."

We need to substantially increase our military assistance and broaden the form," US Under Secretary of Defence for Policy M. Flournoy said at a seminar here.

The US wanted to move beyond a transactional relationship that only involved equipping, supporting and reimbursing to a strategic relationship also involving training, advising and working together on the ground, Dawn Wednesday quoted Flournoy as saying.

Such a relationship "would be much more effective and get a lot farther down the road of achieving our common objectives", she maintained.

According to Flournoy, the US wants to share with the Pakistani Army the counter-insurgency tactics developed in Iraq and Afghanistan and support ongoing operations with intelligence and other assistance.

Speaking about US President Barack Obama's newly-unveiled Af-Pak policy, Flournoy said it aimed to "disrupt, dismantle and defeat Al Qaeda and its extremist allies and to ensure that they cannot return to Afghanistan or continue to stay in Pakistan as safe havens where they can train and stage terrorist attacks".

This could only work if there was a "fundamental shift" in the US-Pakistan relationship.

in my view...Soma thero was a religeous extremist who was trying to "add" to the issues we were already having...
loving your religion is fine but trying to undermine, insult other people's beliefs is down right wrong...even if you're the majority that doesn't give you the right to insult other people's beliefs...
so my friend please don't drag folks like that here...
this war was won over by many people from many walks of lives with many religious beliefs...
I have seen enough of this thero's TV programmes to see that he was downright insulting on other religions and that's worng

My biggest concern is; will they articulate a surrender. If so we also have no choice but to accept it.

We should stop calling for surrender or clear out a time frame for it. After such dates there is no surrender. Death all the same.

It is very interesting to read the about differing views of ANANDA_USA and JEYARAJ. This kind of disagreement is typical. Both of you live abroad I believe. From my experience having lived in Canada for most of my life, since 1972 (as a boy) and now having returned to Sri Lanka to live (Colombo, since 2007), my perspective has changed with regard to this ethnic issue. One sees things very differently when abroad.
In Canada, while I always supported the eradication of the LTTE, I believed that the government had to push harder for a peaceful solution. I also believed that neither side wanted a solution really as the war would continue to feed their hunger for power and money. I was also totally opposed to the hawkish approach of the current govt.
On the other hand I was more inclined to agree with ANANDA-USA that the Tamil grievances were exaggerated and manipulated by propaganda.
However, having spent much time with both Tamils and Sinhalese from all walks of life here, my views have changed. There is no doubt in my mind now that virtually every Tamil (elite or not) has a genuine grievance to some degree. There is also far greater racism towards the Tamils by the Sinhalese than I initially believed. All you have to do is have an honest conversation with any of them, particularly with a couple of drinks behind them and it comes out. ANANDA-USA, I would now tend to disagree with you on that point and I think Jeyaraj is absolutely right.
My views regarding a peaceful solution have also changed. The only way to begin resolving the Tamil grievances is to totally eradicate the LTTE using the zero tolerance approach. The LTTE has no real interest in its Tamil people; it’s all about power, really and that is very clear. For that reason alone, they will never negotiate a peaceful settlement. It is too bad many of the Tamil Diaspora elements don’t see it that way. I think the reason is that many of us are immersed in a one-sided view when we live abroad. I believe the Diaspora elements will also in time, post LTTE just fade away an it is unlikely any of they will ever return to help their people. Their current motives are questionable at best.
It will be up to the Sri Lankans living in Sri Lanka to resolve the problem post LTTE. Can it happen? I can't be as positive as ANANDA-USA (as I was when I was living in Canada). The government is not the issue in the end. They will do whatever they have to do to get votes. So majority population needs to speak up and unite us.
On that end, I am skeptical, given the larger than expected racist element in the South. But I am guardedly hopeful because racist or not, I think the people have had enough of 30 years of hopelessness.
So to ANANDA-USA and Jeyaraj, I believe you are both people who fall into the category of the population that wants unity and peace and that is what is most important. I hop e we can all band together and get our great country to where it belongs.

Dear Ranil,

And I suppose you think your Christian priests are lily white angels? Those pedhophiles are currently running about preachimg hate against other religions and trying to convert everyone to Christianity, claiming it to be the only truth. All the non-Christians are heathens, idol worshippers and pagans destined to burn and rot in hell for eternity. Yeah, real fuckin tolerant eh.

If you want religious extremism, just open the Bible and read all the hate it preaches against others. This God that Christians get on their knees and worship was a blood thirsty animal who killed, butchered and brought misery to so many pople. This has sadly rubbed off on the child-raping Christian priests that inhabit Sri Lanka.

The Catholic church has been in bed with the LTTE all through this conflict and that fuckwit Anglican priest Duleep Chickera was forever trying to tell the government to kowtow to the LTTE. Well, it looks like Sri Lanka has taken a big, hot piss on the face of the Christian extremists. That's why they are screaming like banshees about the anti conversion bill and shitting their pants.

Before pointing fingers at others, look at the Christian community in Sri Lanka itself. Most of you guys are intolerent, self righteous assholes who try and preach to others about tolerance when you yourselves are the most intolerant, self-absorbed and hateful people. Christianity was the only religion that came to Sri Lanka drenched with blood, hatred and violence.

I just wish that once this war is over, those freaks in frocks can be kicked out of Sri Lanka, or at the very least be shown their place.

SriLankan_Canadian_Tamil_Sinhala;

I would like to see further details on few issues that you mentioned.

1. Grievances of tamils that you found? What exactly are they?

2. The racist elements in south? Which parties do you refer to? If possible pls name few individuals who lead such movements.

3. What do you think of diaspora taking tamils for a ride? And pussycats taking them hostages for past 30 years?

4. Do you think that peaceful separation or race based devolution [which is a short cut to prior] is the solution?

5. If we think of united and racially undivided SL, do you think those grievances of tamils will be sorted out. I mean everyone being Sri Lankan will be accepted by them?

6. The "grievences" of tamils again. How many of them are "privileges" instead of "equal rights".

I would be thankful for a good honest response.

Sanath/Ranil/Jerome;

Few points.

- Soma thero is regarded as an extremist by some parties whereas he's regarded as a hero by others. Regardless what he did in religious domain, he did some awakening of the nation and some derivatives of it must have contributed for the current military excellence.

- I do not agree with politics of JVP, NFF, JHU, and other such ideological movements. But as I stated in past, these movements played a very critical role in getting the war towards right direction. Let us appreciate the contribution regardless their color. And let us leave our differences to the corresponding areas but be united for the cause of ours here.

- Religion is in a way a brain wash. It is pretty hard to state that any one of them is absolutely right. Everyone sees the defects of others and they always find them as funny. But they fail to see similar in theirs. However most ppl have a religion. We respect them not because they sound sane or logical, but because it is a respectable matter for our own bro/sis of that faith. Pls do so.

- This discussion has been taken on hostage many times by distractors and they wait for an opportunity like this. To take away the defence debate and apply fractions among us. Do not let it shape here again. We are not discussing the religious importance of Soma Thero or the righteousness of any religion here. If the Thero did some contribution for the war let us accept it. But I do not think that he is the one who made it all. There are so many individuals and many un-named mass. We owe them all. But do not let this discussion move out of the prime topic please.

- Separatist and terrorists like dividing us into another level. And do not let other differences take shape, not only i this blog, but anywhere in SL. Think Sri Lankan please. We paid a dear price for some not being able to think so in teh past.

- I am not a christian, and didn't say amen, okay?? :)

Religious extremism? Just try reading the Bible:

http://www.evilbible.com

This web site is designed to spread the vicious truth about the Bible. For far too long priests and preachers have completely ignored the vicious criminal acts that the Bible promotes. The so called “God” of the Bible makes Osama Bin Laden look like a Boy Scout. This God, according to the Bible, is directly responsible for many mass-murders, rapes, pillage, plunder, slavery, child abuse and killing, not to mention the killing of unborn children. I have included references to the Biblical passages, so grab your Bible and follow along.

Amen!

You must be joking. When we are drunk or not we have our opinions which cannot be categorised as racism. Racism is in action not in talking. we are very critical of our gov minsters, american foreing policy mostly when we are drunk we are most critical of our wives. That doesn't mean that we go home and abuse them.
in a way we sinahalese hate tamils, muslims, Indians the same way we hate our mother in laws and police.

I absolutely agree with Ananda USA's comments. Bandaiya and Haramins in Hambanthota has same grievances as any tamil in north and east. Haramanis probably has more because he cant travel anywhere in the country and no ICRC or UN to speak for them.

I live England and English hate Scottish and Welsh. That doesnt make them racist.

Dear Ranil,
I'm not familiar with Soma Thero and his views.

But I am familiar with one Ryuppu Joseph and his treacherous views. This guy actually wrote lies and sent it to the "Holy See" and the Arch Bishop of Sydney, attempting to get International Intervention.

If as you say Soma had caused potential division among Sri Lankans then people should censor him. On the other hand if he, in that process had done a great service to SL by mobilising its defence then that can be forgiven while not accepting any divisive statements by him.

On the other hand Ryuppu can never be forgiven, for he betrayed mother Lanka herself.

This is not an attack on any religion but an observation of two individuals. It is unfortunate that your comment has attracted Jerome's comments. (I hope this is not another one of those LTTE dialogues to disrupt patriots. If not own up and end it.)

Jerome, I don't know if you are a patriot or a mole. Attack Christian Individuals, but not the people. Many of the noblest sons of the soil who have sacrificed their lives were Christian (Puran Appu was an example).

The unique aspect of Sri Lanka is that it is home to all four major religions. That's the way we should try to keep it. At this point all Sri Lankans, Sinhala, Tamil, Burgher, Muslim, Christian, Hindu and Buddhists have to be united.

# This might explain why not killing VP could be helpful SL in long term.

Also, you goa love all those self immolations, hunger strikes, genocide protests and finally end up in a jail in a developed country..

DBSJEYARAJ RESPONDS: Dont give me this sanctimonious nonsense. Dont blame the postmen for bringing bad news. You are utterly wrong in calling me indifferent or you dont know the meaning of the word. Is there ANY journalist who has written so consistently about the Tamil cause as I have? Not LTTE but Tamil. But then how many of you supported me publicly when I criticised the LTTE openly and urged them to change course?

Dont blame others for the Tamil predicament. The current crisis is mainly due to Velupillai Prabhakaran. How many times have I written urging the LTTE to do “this” or not do “this”in the interests of the Tamil people? What did I get? Continuous bashing by tiger supporters, physical assaults, intimidation, threats, abusive telephone calls, emails, anonymous letters, vilification campaign, the stopping of the newspaper I edited etc.How many of you sanctimonious cats expressed solidarity then?

My right of free speech and free expression was severely curtailed by the LTTE and goons. Except for a few souls (For whom I have the greatest regard) no Tamil sympathised let alone supported me. Now you guys are preaching to me about “journalism” and how to practise it.

In the open letter I wrote after my paper was stopped I stated that the LTTE is causing the greatest harm to the Tamil people and challenged tiger stalwarts to a public debate. No response but for threats, vilification and intimidation.

Yet when Anton Balasingham approached me in 2000 and requested my support to get the LTTE ban lifted I responded positively. I did so ONLY because he PROMISED me that the LTTE will enter negotiations and opt for a settlement within a UNITED Sri Lanka. So I backed the LTTE despite angering many friends. I did so ONLY because I wanted the tigers to settle politically thereby emancipate the Tamils. But they DEFAULTED and I resumed criticising the LTTE

Did I not ask the LTTE to give up an unwinnable war and go in for a negotiated settlement umpteen times? Were people of your ilk supportive then? You guys mortgage your minds and souls to the LTTE and now cry out for the people? Yet you go and demonstrate with tiger flags and chant “our leader Prabhakaran” How hypocritical and stupid.

Did I not argue strongly that the LTTE should mend fences with Karuna in the long term interests of the Tamils? Did I not repeat again and again that the LTTE should stay the course and not abandon the negotiating table? Did anyone listen? Even on Mahinda government’s ruthlessness did I not plead with the LTTE not to enforce a boycott and enable a racist regime to emerge? The shameless LTTE got just 180 million rupees from Basil. This is the price of betrayal. So who is responsible So if you are in the blame game start with Prabakharan and do so under your own name.

I am like a father who warns his son that he would crash his exam if he keeps on playing instead of studying. But he passes with flying colours. Will the father be sad that what he predicted did not happen. No he would be happy to have been proved wrong. On the other hand if the boy does crash will the father be happy that what he said came true. No he will only be sad at what has happened notwithstanding his warning coming true. I am in that position.

Even on the current crisis it was I who WARNED of a forthcoming HUMANITARIAN CATASTROPHE long before all the media and human rights organizations and NGO’s did. But did anyone pay heed? You tamil supporters of LTTE thought the Thalaiver was going to let the army in and whack them. Now you run around like headless chickens.

If the Tamil people are to extricate themselves from this morass they must first recongnize and acknowledge that Prabhakaran has brought them to disaster. That will be the beginning of redemption and renaissance. Instead if they persist in supporting this man who has done the greatest damage to the Tamil people I can see no way out. The comic scenes of waving tiger flags and shouts of our leader with Praba’s portrait makes me think that we have no future at all.

THE LION SHARE FOR TAMIL TROUBLE LIES WITH THE TIGER

“Theethum Nandrum Pirar Thara Vaaraa”.

Usually I keep these thoughts bottled up inside me and remain passive to all the bullshit said about me by all you so-called Tamil patriots but somehow you succeeded in making me erupt. God bless you

for sure... being and ardent supporter of SLDF...a sri lankan...i do not support rayappu or anybody else who has in some form or the other has helped lpte's agenda...
the problem with Soma was that he was creating un-necessary hatred between communities that we can certainly live without... there was a time where some churches were attacked by mobs, some burnt down etc...
The masses can be quite easily manipulated in SL for "popular" causes... and he did just that...
did it help him and his agenda? yes it did...
Did it help Sri Lanka? I refuse to believe so... Further barriers and tensions between otherwise peaceful communities is completely un-necessary...
Not to defend that devil of a bishop rayappu but his words had little impact in real life... on the other hand...Soma had a huge following... My guess is that we could have easily seen major religious wars but luckily for us the attacks against christians were somewhat limited...
but you can see the hardliners attitude even in this space...look at jerome and how he want to chase away all these priests :)

- Church did a similar role as the LTTE propaganga machine, NGOs, INGOs did internationally against Sri Lanka on the issue.

Tamil grievances/cause

If Tamils need/demand a separate country or a federal state with police powers as a solution to the so called 'grievances' then I don’t think Sri Lankans would agree to that.

There are grievances in Sri Lanka that are not specific to a race. These common grievances are 'abused' or highlighted as Tamil grievances. Almost all not so privileged people in Sri Lankan (Sinhalese, Tamils and Muslims) have the same grievances.

Hence it is my belief that finding solutions to these common grievances at this crucial time would help all communities and put our country on a path of development.

(a) To restore the competitive examinations and influence free selection process for all state jobs.

(b) To allow private sector to increase the capacity of higher education and implement a higher education loan scheme similar to that of developed countries. This loan scheme can be state funded and disbursed through the banking system and payments to be made from the employment income.

(c) To eliminate the hurdles of employment creation such as termination of employment acts of 1971 for future employees and encourage creation of jobs. Nationally recognize the entrepreneurs who create jobs.

(d) Implementing changes to the laws to depoliticize the education, local government, land and land allocations and other resource allocations.

(e) Expanding the Teaching few subjects in schools in English language that would enhance the use of a link language and also useful in obtaining employment etc. This will also reduce the gap between the elite and non-elite (to an extent)

Making the changes now and making them publicly will be good as the eyes of the world is on us and anyone would see that these changes address most of the grievances of Tamils and everyone.

Mottapala:
Thank you for attempting to explain to me a true meaning of a racist. I am well aware of what racism means and how to decipher the difference between deep inner racism and harmless branding, dislikes and humour at each others' expense.
The inner racism can be kept hidden, but after few drinks or after an angry exchange, sometimes the true nature of the deep-rooted stuff might be revealed, even from the most cautious ones. I am not talking just Sinhalese racism towards Tamils, but also the Tamil hatred, grievances or whatever you want to call it. Some of these come from elite Colombo Tamils and that surprises me frankly. You really don’t think alcohol can help to expose a person’s true feelings towards race? Ask Mel Gibson. It ended his career. As far as anger, you only have to look at the job search boards for unemployed actors and you will see Michael Richard's name everywhere.
By the way, racism is not always expressed by actions. It is a belief. Many racist live their entire lives without ever showing it directly with actions or words.
Furthermore, in Canada if you hate the Scottish and Welsh simply because of their ethnicity, then you are a racist.
If Anglo Canadians hate the French Canadians, they are racist. If the Tamils hate the Sinhalese, they are racist.
Anyway to be fair I do understand the context of your use of the word "hate" and yes that is not racist, but then again I do understand the difference.

Colombo rejects UN civilian plea

Defence Secretary Gotabhaya Rajapaksa told the BBC that such a move "would not be sensible at the moment".

Mr Rajapaksa's rejection came after a senior UN official urged Tamil rebels to lay down their arms so trapped people in the war zone can be helped.

The government says the rebels are now facing all-out defeat in the war.

"It's not a sensible thing at the moment. There is a civilian rescue operation going on in the area and allowing aid agencies inside the conflict zone is not matching with ground realities," Mr Rajapaksa said.

Since there was a big debate on this blog on two religouse groups I thought I should write some comment on it. As a begining I should say I am a Sinhalese Chatholic but I resepect other religions since they all say the same thing which is how to live in this world as a good person. However the only thing that different is that the way they told it. Anyway they contributes towards the same cause.

If you observed most of the people who talk and shout about buddhism are not practicing buddhist. They just do it for political or business gains. Similar kind of thing happen at the beging of ethnic conflict between us and tamil you can observe similar kind of people acting for their gains. From that terrorists like Prabha took advantage of it and distroyed over mother land. So I urge from each sides please don't do the same mistake in different way. If it's happen that will be the end of our mother land and it will convert to a country like somalia.

I am also angry about Rayappu Josap. He is not deserve to be a priest. I wish I can kill him. Also I am agree with ranil about Soma thero comment. Some of the things he said are right and very good for our country. But on the otherhand he started to insult on other religions to attract more people around him. Anyway we should appreciate if there is any good thing done by Soma Thero.

Also there are lot of Christian war heroes still fighting and gave their life for our mother land. There are lot of amry officers including some army officers who are famouse with sri lankans are Chirstians. There are lot of Muslim solders and officers fighting along side with other solders. I personally know the guy who gave life when LTTE attacked on SLAF base. He was the pilot of the helicopter which came to rescue solders from that attack. He was a excelent pilot as well. He used to live in Ja-ela area and He was a devoted Chatholic who went to a well known Chatholic school in colombo. So we can't say only biddhists are fighting for this mother land. Every solder from different religion or ethnisity is fighting for our country as brothers and sisters for our country.

Therefore my final plea is do not try the small flame of religouse difference in to a big fire. It will distroy our country. please put side our differences and let's rebuild our country. :)

I am also a Sinhalese catholic. But before anything I am a Sri Lankan.

Best way to destroy a country is to get divided on race, ethnic, tribal or religious lines. This has happened in Lebanon, Palestine, Yugoslavia, Chechnya, Ruvanda, Pakistan and in India and also in our country. The divisions are promoted and abused by power hungry people.

Average normal Tamils living in other parts of the country and also many that were rescued by the army may be realizing now that Sri Lankan army (that comprise of Sinhalese, Muslims, Buddhists, Catholics, Malays etc.) are not racists as they were made to believe. In fact Sri Lankan Defense forces comprise of people from all religions and all political parties, all casts, and all creeds.

Harmony among communities is not good news to people with dubious intentions. Hence some people may now try to find ways to create other divisions among us. Hence please don’t respond to comments on religious lines.

If any person (clergy or layman) from any religion or any community or any political party aid and abet terrorism or separation of our motherland arrest and punish these people. But please don’t generalize.

All patriots,

I am little bit baffled by the silence from battle front. There are some rumors that there was stiff resistance in certain parts including a civilian free zone. What is more baffling is that why SLDF can't simply turn that civilian free area in to dust. For example, Ampalavokkana and Valayanmadam have no civilians at all and we should be able concentrate all the fire power and armour we want in to that area. Why is the silence? I hope that this is another PTK encirclement story.

@ Ranil,

I had a respect on the blogger Ranil from the early days. and still I have. But friend, I cannot agree with your comments on Soma thero.

He can be seen as you saw for a Non sinhala, buddhist person. Because he always talked about Sinhala,Buddhists. But it is Soma thero who has awakened the SRI LANKANS against LTTE. He is a person who said "This war can be won".

I have heard, viewed most of his Bana. He blamed not to muslims, not to christians, but to Buddhists.

He always get the good points from other religions and said "Look how good is this? But you buddhists do not practice such?

I can write more. But do not want to drag this any more. I don't reply again on this regard.

I didn't see any anything wrong in Sanath's comment except repeating 3 times.

[Sri Lanka has rejected an appeal by the UN to allow aid agencies into the war zone in the north-east to help civilians affected by heavy fighting.

Defence Secretary Gotabhaya Rajapaksa told the BBC that such a move "would not be sensible at the moment".

Well said... and stick to this policy to the letter. UN infested with vultures.... is testing if we are WEAK.

This is the time we have to show the HIGHEST LEVEL of leadership and determination.

Let the UN or US or Martians do anything... we must now redouble our policy to wipe out the Tamil terrorists while targeting to achieve ZERO civilian casualties.

That's our policy, which is being shown to everyone. If anyone doesn't see it or believe it... it's their problem... and they can go to hell.

If we put a pause now... and the Fat Pig will get another life.... a total disgrace to our troops.

We learned a bitter lesson once, when the Injuns put pressure on us, right?

Waanga Machaan.... Waanga.... we must take risks sometimes.. and stand up to tyrants.

SRI LANKAN LEADERS PLEASE TAKE NOTE of this Rising Star: MAYAWATI, UP Chief MinisterWe must befriend her, cultivate her, and GET HER ON SRI LANKA's SIDE before our ENEMIES DO!

"Mayawati is India's anti-Obama": NewsweekApril 23, 2009
Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati features on the cover of Newsweek's latest edition, with the US weekly drawing parallels between her and US President Barack Obama - in their rise to political heights though belonging to the bottom of the social ladder.

However, the weekly with the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) chief's photo on its cover design, says Mayawati is a "bigger underdog" and a "bigger threat" to the "established order than Obama was".

While commenting her "suspiciously ostentatious fortune" and her "limited accomplishments" on behalf of the socially oppressed Dalits, whose cause she champions, the weekly has said her possible bagging the prime ministership would "ironically end up bolstering the caste system that has kept them (Dalits) in chains".

She would "likely be a highly divisive national leader - an anti-Obama - and not only domestically".

Mayawati became the chief minister of India's most populous state of Uttar Pradesh in 2007 on her own steam. She is now gunning for the country's top job, or even as king maker, after the parliamentary elections in India get over in May."

Her supporters are trying to position her as India's answer to America's youthful black president," the weekly said.

It said the chances of her party actually winning a majority of the seats in parliament were unlikely. "But the likely outcome is that the two main parties, Congress and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), will be forced to rely on coalitions. Mayawati's followers hope she'll emerge as kingmaker in the negotiations, with enough clout to grab the top job herself.""

There are indeed parallels between Mayawati and Obama. Like America's president, Mayawati is young - just 53 in a country where most political leaders are in their 70s."

She is also an outsider who comes from a long-oppressed segment of society: the Dalits."

Mayawati is both a bigger underdog and a potentially bigger threat to the established order than Obama was. While he benefited from a first-class education, she grew up in a shantytown with eight brothers and sisters and attended poor state schools."

Obama enjoyed the backing of a long-established party, while Mayawati's organization, the BSP, has been built up largely by Mayawati herself - and in a part of the world where women have made it to the pinnacle of power only as wives, widows or daughters of beloved male leaders."

But unlike Obama, Mayawati has built her power on demagogic class warfare. As her national ambitions have grown, she recently began reaching out to upper-caste voters - but by playing on their fears of the upwardly mobile middle castes, not by appealing to their better, caste-free angels."

She has accumulated a suspiciously ostentatious fortune, and is dogged by corruption charges. She is admired by many Dalits, but often more for her power and jewels than for her limited accomplishments on their behalf."

Her victory, if it comes, may be seen as a great leap forward for India's oppressed - but, ironically, will end up bolstering the caste system that has kept them in chains."

Mayawati would likely be a highly divisive national leader - an anti-Obama - and not only domestically."

Patriots,

The Newsweek portrayal of Mayawati I posted earlier, does not properly reflect her abilities or her wide appeal to Indians in general.

They cast her as a divisive class warfare oriented person. Although she derives her power from the dalits, and other disenfranchised people in UP, she also has some very sound solutions to India's ills, and has captured the support and imagination of the upper castes as well.

In particular, she wants to dismantle the CURRENT caste-based affirmative action programs of the Federal Govt of India, and replace them with POVERTY & NEED based programs that CUT ACROSS CASTE BARRIERS. This is clearly the correct way to go because it will stop pitting various segments of India's people against each other and perpetuating CASTE differences.

This is important to even the Brahmins, who constitute 40% of the toilet cleaners and rickshaw pullers in New Delhi, but are denied benefits because they are of the Brahmin caste, doggedly wearing their "Purna Noola" across their chests. Clearly, this deneial of benefits is unjust to them!

The CASTE based benefits system has created a VERITABLE MONSTER in India, with different castes fighting each other for government benefits. One Indian Supreme Court justice quipped "I know of no other country in the world where people fight so hard for the opportunity to degrade and debase themselves in social status for the sake of money!"

In Sri Lanka we should take a page from Mayawati's book, and offer government assistance to people solely based on POVERTY and NEED; not any other consideration.

dear friends

update barring classified details

Prabhakaran and his group isolated now closer to two clicks west of vallamullivakai

his son, pottu amman, bhanu, soosai also sighted

the biggest risk is excape with civilians or flee southwest along the lagoon and hide in mulativu forrests (mullayaweli area),

But the plan seems to be wait it out until the civilian carnage causes a foreign rescue operation.

the operation should end in perhaps hours if there is no political interference.

more delay in military operations will lead to more civilian casualties.
