Prabhakaran no more. Others dead too.

The Sri Lanka Army has recovered, what appears to be the remains of LTTE Leader Velupillai Prabhakaran and the bodies of his key aides. The remains of 250 LTTE leaders and their bodyguards have been recovered.

We can now confirm that the remains are indeed of Prabhakaran and his key leaders. The exact details of their demise will be discussed in time.

As we reported yesterday, the Army's 1 and 2 Special Forces, incidentally the two Special Forces Regiments who fought to regain Mullaitivu Base over a decade ago and the Commando Regiment are discovering the remains 'in order of importance' with assistance provided by the MIC.

My heart is with all those brave Sri Lankans who lost their lives defending the country. They make the supreme sacrifice for the motherland.

I like to remember the greatest of all the politicians of last 20 years the Sri Lanka has witnessed, Hon. Luxman Kadirgamar, without him the GOSL wouldn't have walk this far. His untimely death sealed the grand finale of LTTE and Eelam we witnessed today.
=========
I am in Seventh heaven because this bloody war is over and all civilians are out of the harms way.

I wish MR in his speech emphasised the fact that the war was fought to the bitter end to rescue the civilians.

Above all GOSL should be humbled and should not forget that it is a country of buddhist people. Who are in nature non-violent.(True LTTE changed that forever).

GOSL needs everyones help to rebuild the country. It should implemennt APRC proposals without delay. Give some autonomy to the regions. (Yes if we can find 2 Kadirgamars amoung the Tamil community then give them the Federal and see what happen. )

I hope there won't be another war on this land.

DAVID MILLIBAND

The Foreign Secretary claimed almost £30,000 for doing up his £120,000 constituency home over five years. He spent up to £180 every three months on the garden at the property in South Shields. At the bottom of one receipt for £132.96 in April 2008, his gardener wrote a note questioning whether some of the work was necessary. His £200 claim for a pram was turned down

GORDON BROWN

Mr Brown used his expenses to pay his brother, Andrew, £6,577 for cleaning work at his Westminster flat between 2004 and 2006. The brothers shared the cleaner at their two flats. Under the arrangement, Andrew Brown paid the cleaner and the Prime Minister reimbursed his share of the cost.

OK now the LTTE has been literally decimated. One way or the other the present phase of conflict is over. 2 unwanted pieces of advice is warranted:

1.Diaspora Tamils have to understand "eelam" in the present form of understanding is not going to come in their lifetime. They should forget about LTTE resurrection and concentrate on a political struggle, which will be harder for the Srilankan state to resist and do lesser damage to Tamils. At the very least they should change the name and leadership of armed organization, if they intend to continue guerilla war.

2.Sinhalese can rest assured their country is not going to be divided in their lifetime. They can be magnanimous in victory , and prevent any chances of future rebellion by giving Tamils some measure of self-rule.I dont think it will give rise to demands of separation--with self-rule, and a taste of economic prosperity the rebel supporters will be left in the Diaspora alone.

Having said that, I hope(and half-expect)the UN to initiate war-crimes inquiry against MR, GR and SF in that order of responsibility. The LTTE leaders have already paid with their lives.

I am afraid you have confused me for someone else.

****************

I note here and elsewhere many heart-felt posts about supporting the soldiers who made this victory possible and I applaud them and their families however I have yet to see anyone post about the many families in the North who were decimated by the fighting and whose lives have also been destroyed.

None of the bravery and sacrifice of the Armed Forces means a thing if the hostages themselves are not given the best care and attention the GoSL can muster.

Instead of a massive celebration to mark the end of this phase of the war I humbly submit that a few moments of National silence is in order to show respect for both soldiers and their families as well as the innocent civilian victims of this conflict.

A widowed women whose husband will not return from the battle, a mother whose son will never cross her doorstep with flowers and a smile for her, a family who watched as their children were stolen from them and forced to die as child soldiers... none of these people can fairly share in the joy that so many others are reveling in right now. They may one day take solace in the fact that their loved ones died as part of a great and noble struggle against terrorism and evil incarnate but what joy can they have today knowing little but the immense pain of such personal and permanent loss.

It is natural for people to be celebratory at such an important moment in the history of Sri Lanka but before anyone gets too excited it is critical to show respect and concern for everyone who has suffered the consequences of this armed conflict and thusly borne the great burdens thereof.

Bravery and suffering have danced hand in hand to the delicate and brutal music of this war and everyone who suffered its caprice and inevitable carnage must be shown humble respect and nothing less than the finest offerings of good people across the Country.

The true measure of Sri Lanka's character will be made not by the counting of vanquished enemy bodies but by the manner in which hope, reconciliation and mutual respect are embraced during the difficult years of reconstruction and settlement ahead.

May the Emerald Isle soon sparkle again as a precious jewel on the world's crown of decency and prosperity.

Peace to all of you here.

Miss Information.

from tomorrow onward we should start reclaiming our land in the north.

we should either use it or lose it.

make the north as diverse as colombo and rest assured there will never be any tamil elam movement peaceful or violent.

don't do it for whatever reasons, the tamil elam struggle will recommence.

the political solution should make the north as diverfied as colombo, otherwise it fails.

there will be MASSIVE SLA camps and along with them we MUST have settlements of all peoples, especially sinhala settlements.

if ALL sri lankans don't use it, they will lose it again to a racial community. don't blame them if we don't use it.

appeasing ppl begging them not to support tamil elam is not going to work.

do as much as possible but above all ensure the change in composition in the north by hook or by crook.

Guys this war is far from over, so lets not split any hair. We may be just about to close one of the best battles fought by SLDF. We won lots of battles, but not yet the war. As you can see LTTE is spread wide and far from Sri Lanka. They have already gone global. They have established them selves well and truly. They have reached western governments and UN. Western leaders are making political statements against Sri Lanka.

We will have to go through the next phase of re-settling the IDPs and re-development of the areas which were under LTTE. This is a huge task. Everything has to be re-built from scratch. Highways, electricity, irrigation, housing, religion, culture, education, etc. are just the main areas.

Though VP and the leaders are dead if we do not play our card right we can end up with another VP before we can know it.

Meanwhile we have to deal with the LTTE insurgents (No longer capable of fighting an open warfare) Remaining LTTE cadres will may move to carryout sabotage activities, arson, murder, IEDs, booby traps and suicide bombings. (Lets hope that the remaining cadres will fade away or give up, but we need to prepare)

We all need to understand that the situation will change from open warfare to insurgency. Mostly the politicians of all types and creeds need to understand this and should not try to use it as a political tool to get back to power.

Aim should be to retain Government control over the population of liberated area while defeating LTTE political and military subversion. (Both, nationally and internationally)

Concept of Operations. To win over the Tamil people through 'Security, Confidence and Development Concept'. Following may have to be carried out:

a. Establishment of a secretariat or coordinating headquarters with members where all requirements of the civil population are incorporated. This committee may consist of:

(1) Military/Police personnel.
(2) District Secretary.
(3) Heads of Government departments/Corporations.
(4) Important private sector officials.

It would be the responsibility of this coordinating HQ to ensure that all basic requirements are made available to the population. It is essential that this coordinating HQs are controlled and managed under overall leadership, i.e. Secretary of Defense.

b. Establishment of temporary refugee camps to the rear of the forward areas and maintain essential services for people, if circumstances compel the evacuation of the civil population (We need to ensure that LTTE can not take control of the population ever, even if we have to move the entire village/town city to fight LTTE). This is to ensure that we do not abandon the population on temporary tactical deployments. Troops to be instructed to keep the population within the own area of control at all cost, denying the LTTE the role of liberator. The population should be made aware of the contingency and evacuation plans arranged for their safety.

c. Adequate logistic lift should be planned to maintain Civil population in liberated areas and at normal market prices. Establish a commercial transport venture to liberated areas.

d. Activate proper psychological/propaganda programmes.

e. Dedicated Military/civil organization to look after the population and separate them from the Offensive troops whose role would be different.

f. Aggressively dominate all around the liberated areas to deny infiltration.

g. Continue with population and resources control measures.

h. Expedite resettlement, rehabilitation and reconstruction programmes.

i. Activate quick impact development programmes to offer the youth an alternate to the gun culture and LTTE.

j. Offer meaningful package for rehabilitation of surrendees/defectors.

k. Expedite socio-political programmes to eradicate any social/political injustices.

l. Police to maintain normal law and order.

m. Propaganda backed by action to swing the mood against LTTE and establish the sincere intentions of the Government.

n. Expedite long-term development programmes to convince the people that the Government intends to stay and will not abandon the people to the LTTE.

o. Invite foreign assistance to accelerate development impact.

p. Commence programmes to mobilize people to rebuild confidence in them selves, in their community and the democratic system.

q. Maintain a high level of courts of law and justice.

r. Encourage free enterprise and create a stable community.

s. Use of force against LTTE must be carefully worked out in conjunction with the measures designed to mitigate any unfavorable impact, which may have on people's attitudes.

Not everyone in north was victim. Only the people who chose to live with the terrorists were then taken hostages and freed by our forces. We must also remember that some of these hostages were volunteer human shields also spreading lies like the infamous doctors.

You know even with that these people are in camps getting free food and medicine. That is already done for them.

There are many families of armed forces that don't get free food and medicine like these people.

Also today and this week and future is about the brave sons of our soil who gave their lives to give us a new terror free Sri Lanka. Today I have not even said thanks to DW or even mentioned MR and GR (even though they are responsible for our victory) because today is about the lion hearts.

You are absolutely right, we should ask the Chinese, to help Sri Lanka to re-built and for the money. Sri Lanka also will save ton of money as they don't have to fight an open warfare anymore.

Loku Banda -UK said...

That also reminds me of something.

There are many family members of our brave hearts that work in factories to feed their families. They are hard working families that even after giving so much to the country don't want to live on government money.

But I am ASHAMED when someone like Ranil lives his entire life on our tax money. Ranil has NEVER had a job. He has never gone to work or contributed to anything. Still for many years we pay for his house, car and luxury life. In this golden time of new Sri Lanka we have to put an end to this. We need to identify traitors to the nation and stop paying for them. We should put Ranil on the front to lay a road or something if he wants out money.

I think MR will call elections in a month. Then with about 80% votes he can amend constitution to get rid of the stupid 2 terms rule. If he doesn't we can have MR for 1 more term and then GR for 2 more and also Basil for another 2. So that means we only need 1 party in Sri Lanka for another 25 years. In that time we can develop the country well. I am waiting for the day Ranil has to do actual work to feed himself instead of eating on our money.

IMF loan? : Some countries are planning to help Sri Lanka to control Sri Lanka. This was evident with the events parallel to the US senate hearing. We have to be very careful what we are taking in, not only the money also the people. It is best we develop our own as much as we can. I think expatriates can do a lot, than what they do today. This is not to blame, but to highlight the potential impact they can do. Whatever we do to help will accumulate to a lot of value. Also, it will be best we continue with our current leadership for a while. Our internal strength is necessary to face the external forces. We must use our own resources and develop our own capabilities to success. Our defense forces have shown us that they are second to none in the world. Lets not forget that Tamil terrorism is the pinnacle of evolution of Tamil racism in Sri Lanaka. The British baptized Tamil racism by special treatment, Chevanayagam said Sinhalese are not good enough to rule Tamils. Ponnambalma wanted undemocratic 50-50 representation.

Racism , separatism and terrorism is the order of evolution of misguided Tamil inspirations in Sri Lanka.

Peace will come to Sri Lanka when we defeat Tamil separatism and racism.

Now that the use of these blogs are coming to an end we should stat new blogs or convert these blogs to expose the myths like "discrimination of Tamils", "second class citizens" "Tamil home land in Sri Lanka" etc.

DID THEY REALLY GET THE FAT PIG?

Come on people. Fat Pig is no more with us. Sabbe Sanakara Anicca (All worldly phenomena are impermanent). Accordingly, the Fat Pig parted company with us. He was there a few days back. But today he is no more with us. He has made his journey to Avici Maha Narakaya (AMN) and is being given the treatment there. Mind you, this is not the standard type of treatment that other criminals get. The program has been specially designed for him and he is certainly NOT going to enjoy it. His residence permit in AMN is stamped for 3.3 billion years and may be considered for extension at the end of that period. But the important is that he is not with us any more.

When he comes out of AMN (ticket kapunayin passe, as they say in SL), he will be disappointed to find NO EELAM still and he had better not try to even dream about creating Eelam again.

Also, have some faith in the top team and the rest who have made so many sacrifices and performed flawlessly up to now while we have been just tapping away at our key boards. The Dhamma describes a state of mind similar to what you have now. It is called Vicikicca (Doubt about Dhamma). It is not a sin but a definite hindrance that prevents you from realizing the truth.

Do you think that such a monumental announcement will come as a posting in a web site? Not a chance, it will come from the great leader himself. So rest well and be up early tomorrow to hear the great man announcing it. Also tender an apology to DW who has played his assigned role flawlessly by not making a premature and unverified announcement. Read his posting. Everyone knows about it now except the Doubting Thomases of this site.

In the old bazaar area, Sinhala, Tamil, Muslim and other people told the BBC they were relieved.

For decades they had feared boarding buses or visiting temples, some said, for fear of bombs.

Now they hoped there would be peace with development.

There's still widespread humanitarian concern about civilians who may have been caught up in the fighting.

Prabhakaran's death: mixed feelings in ChennaiIANS
May 18, 2009

[ CHENNAI: Relief and frank disbelief - as news came in that Tamil Tigers chief Velupillai Prabhakaran had actually been killed, some in this Tamil Nadu capital said it was long in coming and others simply refused to believe it was true.

Unwilling to take chances, the establishment tightened security all over the state and especially in Chennai, where the issue of Tamil Eelam, or a separate state for Tamils in Sri Lanka, has always been an emotive one.

Security was particularly stepped up around the Sri Lankan Deputy High Commission in the heart of the city, making it difficult for people who lived and worked in the area.

"No chances are being taken as this could prove to be an emotional issue amongst a small section of society. Armed pickets have been posted at all vulnerable areas," a police official told IANS.

And while police went on alert, the reactions to the death of Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) chief in Sri Lanka's Mullaitivu area varied widely.

"If the news is true, the last hope of Tamils in Sri Lanka who once ruled that island nation, long before the Sinhalese, is lost forever. Whatever may have been his shortcomings, he will always be hero to us," said K.N.P. Dasarathan, a business executive.

Added a Sri Lankan Tamil student: "Knowing Thambi (brother), the news is probably untrue as there are little chances of his being killed by the enemy. However, if the story is true... he has become a martyr."

But for businessman N. Suresh, it was a matter of human life and the toll that the LTTE had extracted.

"If one looks at human life, the deaths in Sri Lanka sadden me whether it is Prabhakaran or anybody else. Prabhakaran extended the elastic bit too long and lost. He should have entered into a dialogue with the Sri Lankan government early.

"It should also be remembered that the LTTE killed other groups and leaders fighting for the Tamil rights cause."

Added homemaker R. Vasantha: "Terrorism has no space in a civil society. Whether it is Prabhakaran or Veerappan, both have to be eliminated."

Political analyst Cho Ramaswamy welcomed the development. "Sri Lanka is now rid of a problem and it is a great relief...

"The LTTE has eliminated many Tamil leaders though there are some remaining alive. In Tamil Nadu, some fringe groups may indulge in violence and there may some self immolations. The state police can easily quell that as there is no support for them from the people," he said.

The pro-LTTE political parties were unavailable for comment.

Both Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi and former chief minister J. Jayalalithaa had endorsed a separate homeland for Sri Lankan Tamils during the last days of the election campaign.

The decades long conflict for a separate Tamil homeland left nearly 90,000 people dead in the island nation, separated from India by a narrow stretch of sea. ]

Exactly Right, Sam!

The POLITICAL BATTLE to carve out an autonomous Tamil province in Sri Lanka will now BEGIN in earnest.

The Indian Govt, STRENGTHENED at the recent Lok Sabha elections, the US Govt with Obama and Hilarious Clinton, and ALL other DO-GOODERS will NOW TRY to IMPOSE a "Political Solution" on Sri Lanka, IRRESPECTIVE of WHAT WE WANT, or THINK SHOULD BE DONE.

We, the Patriots, will have to GIRD OUR LION LOINS now to HELP the GOSL resist that International Pressure, so that our SOVEREIGN NATION can IMPLEMENT a SOLUTION of our own that will GUARANTEE peace and tranquility in Sri Lanka, consistent with OUR HERITAGE and OUR SENSE of JUSTICE and FAIRPLAY.

ETHNIC INTEGRATION guaranteeing ONE NATION, ONE Sri Lankan PEOPLE with ONE DESTINY, without DEVOLUTION OF POWER on ETHNIC BASES should be that PERMANENT and ENDURING solution; No OTHER!

The "Military War" has been WON; but the "Political War" is YET to be WON...so Don't GO AWAY...my brothers and sisters.

PATRIOTS, Bravehearts ALL, Sharpen the SWORD of your WIT, Polish the Rebuttals of your VIRTUAL SHIELD, and RALLY ROUND with your KEYBOARDS, at THE BALANE' PASS to REPEL the Invading Hordes!

How the West was sidelined (for the moment)

A couple of years back, in Geneva, the British ambassador tried to have a resolution critical of Sri Lanka passed in the United Nations Human Rights Council. The previous year such a resolution had been proposed, and after negotiation, as I understood, it was kept on the table, so that it could be taken up if agreed.

In 2007 Dr. Dayan Jayatilleka decided that he would not accept a resolution. He also refused to negotiate on the terms of a Presidential Statement, which was then proposed by the British ambassador. He refused even to accept a draft text, since that would have been tantamount to agreeing that some sort of action was necessary.

Dr. Jayatilleka’s view was that there was no need of any action with regard to Sri Lanka, but he also recognised that, with the adverse publicity against the country coming from various quarters, it was necessary to make our position clear. He therefore ensured that a delegation from Colombo briefed regional groupings as well as individual states on the actual situation. The result was that many, who had previously heard only one side of the story, understood the efforts we were making, and agreed that any action against the country would be inappropriate.

The danger passed, though we had to deal with repeated criticism of Sri Lanka, from a few countries and from a plethora of Non-Governmental Organisations. Some of these were international ones, such as Human Rights Watch, which had fired the first salvo in the attack on Sri Lanka when, fraudulently, it accused us of indiscriminate attacks on civilians. There were also some local ones, though we found out soon enough that many of them were funded precisely by those countries that wanted us subject to criticism. The most appalling example of this came to my notice when the head of the Berghof Foundation, Norbert Ropers, informed me that they had funded one such organisation, which they recognised was a surrogate for the LTTE, but this had been done in good faith when they thought that the LTTE could be democratised. My understanding was that they had now ceased to fund this organisation though, when I found out later that this was not the case, Mr. Ropers wrote to me from abroad to say that I had misunderstood him.

Those were the days when the anti-Government press in Colombo was claiming that the Government was about to be defeated on the budget, and when it was declared that the whole world was against Sri Lanka. When there was no motion in the Human Rights Council against us, it was claimed that we had been saved by rogue states. Those were days when the opposition claimed that the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights was going to insist on a UN Monitoring Mission in Sri Lanka and nothing would stop this, when her sidekick tried to persuade me that the UN would do a better job than the Scandinavians, and when a very sweet Amnesty International worker in fact told us that she had been asked by UNOHCHR in Geneva to pack her bags and prepare to come to Sri Lanka to be part of the UN Mission. Entertainingly, Amnesty, in asking that a delegation be allowed to come to Sri Lanka now, suggested that that lady be part of it, though unfortunately their London office had meanwhile sought a visa for the much more prejudiced Yolanda Foster.

When it became clear that there would be no resolution against Sri Lanka, and that the attempt to denigrate the Government through this manoeuvre had failed, the British ambassador told me that our ambassador thought he had won, but we should wait and see. He did agree with my suggestion that, since we did want to improve our Human Rights situation, the British should help positively instead of simply pointing fingers, and promised to tell the High Commissioner in Sri Lanka to look into the matter. Those however were the days of Dominic Chilcott, who ignored my requests, and tried to tell me that, while he thought some elements in the Government were sincere, others were dreadful.

But Dominic Chilcott went away, to Washington and the Human Rights paradise of the Bush Presidency, and there was a new British ambassador in Geneva too, and it seemed things were better. 2008 passed without incident, except for a few squawks in the British Parliament, and we thought that in fact the British were now more genuine in their dealings with Sri Lanka.

We were wrong. Perhaps because of the determination of David Miliband to stamp his mark upon British Foreign Policy, we had a flurry of adverse commentary, with what seemed avuncular encouragement of Tiger demonstrators in London. And the determination to break loose from the international consensus that the Tigers surrender, exemplified in the Miliband refusal to answer the question put to him twice by the BBC, was accompanied by more plotting in Geneva.

Dr. Jayatilleka discovered early in May that the British, together with some other Western nations, were trying to invoke a special session of the Council on May 14th, to discuss the Sri Lankan situation. Whether they were genuinely concerned was a matter for doubt, since the Western Europeans alone of the regional groupings had refused to meet with the Sri Lankan delegation in March, when we offered briefings on the current situation and the opportunity to ask questions. It should be noted though that some European countries did give us the opportunity to discuss matters with them, and we were able to disabuse them of some of the more extreme examples of Tiger propaganda.

The European masterminds behind the move were very secretive, and went ahead without initially consulting the other regional groupings. They must have assumed they would have no difficulty in getting the 16 signatures required, since they had about a dozen themselves, and had managed to persuade one Asian country to commit itself.

But Dr. Jayatilleka then went into action, and convinced all the other groupings that the Western European move was manifestly unfair. As happened in Sri Lanka, where briefings were held with relevant diplomats, one obvious question was the timing of the move, which seemed obviously designed to assure the Tigers, fighting what should have been their last battle, that they had world sympathy. Mr Miliband’s failure to insist on a Tiger surrender, which had been remarked upon also by others, gave credence to the view that the whole move was disingenuous, nothing to do with humanitarian concerns but rather an obvious political ploy.

How intense the effort was became clear when hosts of NGOs, many of them funded by the countries most keen on the move, weighed in with their requests, and when Special Rapporteurs who had not been especially interested in Sri Lanka previously, issued a press release calling for an independent inquiry into the situation in Sri Lanka. One of them claimed this had been done because they had not had a response to their letters, but since the letters had been sent in the last few days in May, and the reply went ten days later, their haste in issuing a damning release on May 8th seemed positively indecent – recalling a similar release by the High Commissioner for Human Rights, sent out when some Western Europeans were canvassing for a Presidential Statement on Sri Lanka at the ordinary session of the Council in March.

Meanwhile the campaign of the Tigers was reaching fever pitch all over Europe and in America. Following the successful escape of nearly a thousand civilians on the 9th of May, the Tigers shot at those trying to follow on the next day, but the deaths were then used for intense propaganda that attributed responsibility to the Sri Lankan forces. Simple induction was beyond all those implacably opposed to the Sri Lankan state, the fact that we had got out over 100,000 with minimum civilian casualties in April, that the flood had been dammed until we succeeded again on May 9th in getting people out without civilian casualties, and it was precisely to claim a catastrophe that the Tigers had kept these civilians for so long.

The self-righteous Europeans must have thought then that their campaign could not fail. They could not believe that the efforts of Dr. Jayatilleka and his dedicated team at the Mission in Geneva would turn back the combined efforts of so many wealthy and determined countries. Knowing the trust his colleagues in Geneva had in him, they raised the matter in capitals all over the world, only to find that the ambassadors in Geneva had very different advice to offer.

Dr. Jayatilleka was helped in this by the work he had done with the other regional groupings over the last couple of years. In particular, the Non-Aligned Movement proved a rock of strength, with both its current Chairman Cuba, and the next Chairman Egypt, being categorical in their view that this singling out of what seemed vulnerable individuals was contrary to the spirit in which the Human Rights Council had been established. But the support of our immediate neighbours, Indian and Pakistan, and also Bangladesh, all of them respected members of the Council, also proved invaluable, along with the positive input of Russia and China, with their added prestige as permanent members of the Security Council.

There was a briefing on the 12th on the humanitarian situation in Sri Lanka, arranged without reference to Sri Lanka, though fortunately Dr. Jayatilleka had been working late in his office on May 8th, and had received the notice before he went home, so that he was able to ensure input from Sri Lanka. Otherwise it is possible that the session would have been used for critical comments, as were made by the British, based on the visit of their beloved Miliband, but apart from that we had only very generous inputs from the Japanese and others.

At a dinner that evening, even though there was still a danger that the Western Europeans would continue with their hunt for signatures, a number of ambassadors made it clear that they would not stand for this type of selective criticism. It was also understood that, even though the Europeans would not get the sort of resolution they craved, it would not do to be passive, because then the media would present a Western viewpoint, to the effect that Sri Lanka had been saved from condemnation by just a few countries who could conveniently be demonised. Any session for which signatures were obtained would then have to lead to a resolution, which would make clear the determination of the world at large to deal firmly with terrorism.

On the 14th a number of what seemed LTTE surrogates were seen coming into Geneva, perhaps having relied on assurances that they would get their lifeline that day, with a jamboree which would have been widely reported as proving how inhuman the Sri Lankan government and forces had been. But, though the quest for signatures continued, with more statements piling in, the week ended with the real international community resoundingly rejecting those who had tried to dragoon it into selective criticism.

A number of lessons should be learned from the whole episode. Firstly, making the West the cornerstone of our foreign policy is clearly a mistake – or at any rate the old West about which we still continue sentimental. If for instance we had voted not for Britain (which we did unconditionally last year) but for Spain, the latter would have been elected to the Council instead of Britain and we would not have had so many headaches. Secondly, whilst of course we must still continue good relations with the West (for they too have decent politicians, who will not all promote terrorism for political considerations), we must work more concertedly with our neighbours and also the regional groupings which share our interests.

Thirdly, we must also endeavour to satisfy the idealistic expectations of these our friends. All of them asked about the intended political solution to the political problem and, while they were steadfast in accepting that terror had to be dealt with militarily, and dealt with conclusively, they will also all expect a decent package that exemplifies the pluralistic nature of Sri Lankan society. They could understand delays while the terrorist sword hung over us but, now that is no longer a major threat, we must fulfil their expectations about the essentially democratic dispensation our government has defended so ably.

But at the same time there are also lessons the West should learn. The anger at obvious double standards was palpable amongst all our friends. Obviously we do not expect even the most idealistic country to abandon its own interests. But in sticking to them ruthlessly, the use of sanctimonious pronouncements to reach other ends is abhorrent. It is especially important that the Obama administration, which came in with such high hopes, should not be seen as just another cynical mixture as before.

Secondly, the West should not take the rest of the world for granted. Its failure to consult at all was surprising; its failure to consult neighbours who obviously have a stake in a stable neighbourhood was astonishing. The impression could have arisen that stability in our areas is not to the interest of the West, which would prefer a plethora of weak states, to allow it to maintain more easily its current hegemony, political as well as economic.

And thirdly, the West should think about the message it is sending, in seeming to want the Tigers to survive in some form or another, particularly in the light of its past blunders. After all the horrors we are witnessing now, which are attributed largely to the West, spring from its own encouragement of Taliban terrorism during the Cold War. Whatever its purposes then, there is no doubt they could have been achieved without worrying consequences had there been at least a modicum of adherence to basic principles.

Sri Lanka may for the moment have escaped the worst the West could do to it. But we need to be constantly vigilant for the future. We should do this with greater dialogue and discussion with our friends, and more forthright discussion with the West to enable them to achieve their own goals without irritating so much of the rest of the world. And we should use the intellectual and social capital of Dr. Jayatilleka and his staff in Geneva to develop solid guiding principles for international relations in the current world context.

Lionheart,

Wow!

Good thinking.

Why aren't you at Ananda's Blog as an author? All you have to do is to ask.

There are other top cadres who have not been accounted for. Poovana, Sudar, Ramanan. I met them when we were allowed to visit the Vanni and told that there could never be a military solution. These men although very intellident wre cocksure and complacent. Now we have to be careful never to allow them to rise again.

kumar,

I am with you man. No body no proof. PRBAHARAN is alive. There is no doubt about it. What I heard is that he just had a meeting with Charles Anthony about future direction of Eelam Struggle. When Prabaharan is too old to handle, CA can take it over. I am very hopeful that Eelam will be achieved soon before CA takes it over. Check this Tamilnet.com interview with Mr. Selvarasa Pathmanathan to find more about it.

Viva Eelam!!

I only want to add this to the general comments. Almost every family in Sri Lanka's been touched by combat deaths. You know that their pain and loss, especially that felt by the mothers, does not lessen or diminish with age. That this seemingly never-ending war is being ended will be MR & his team's greatest achievement to date.

Creating a new ForumI wanted to offer these thoughts about continuing the blog in a different, more useful format. Arguing with Eelamtards doesn't achieve much other than a momentary glimpse into a frozen, racist mindset.

We could help SL (without party political partisanship) through actively combatting LTTE & INGO on-line propaganda, making detailed dossiers on which INGOs helped the LTTE, which countries helped the LTTE etc. E.g. All too often SL newspapers write 'certain people' instead of naming names. Why?

It need not be military matters only. Re-development assistance could also be featured.

Talking is good, but action is better. The time for action is now. There are many technically competent contributors to the various blogs who can assist with this project, ranging from research to writing and planning.

A web-based forum, rather than a blog is the best option. rather like the ones that Pakistanis and Indians have.

I’m sure you’ve all visited these sites?

Sri Lanka's enemies have not given up. They've already started the media campaign to negate this historic victory against the LTTE. A victory paid for with the blood, lives and limbs of our fellow citizens.

So Mahen, Defencewire, Defencewatch? How about it?

DW,
What is going on? TamilNut is going nuts. How long does it take to do DNA tests?

When are we going to get the results?

AFP

Pathmanathan went on to accuse the Sri Lankan government and military of "crimes against humanity," saying senior LTTE leaders had been shot dead after being invited to negotiate their surrender.

--------------------------
Government should respond to this. If they arrange to negotiate for surrender, there should be telephone conversations or there must be third parties involved. Therefore government should respond to this saying provide evidence.

Also when is the government going to release DNA evidence.
If we have the DNA evidence, government should use this to show what BS news Tamilnet provides.
