President Mahinda Rajapakse is expected to make a speech on Sunday afternoon or Monday morning to declare the victory. He is expected to land tomorrow morning.
Middle-level LTTE leaders are surrendering in large numbers. High profile leaders like Poddu, Soosei, Bhanu, Rathnam etc are still alive with their leader and have surrounded themselves with several hundred civilians. They are expected to blow themselves up. The Army expects the civilians to escape before this suicide.
Among those who surrendered today was the wife of LTTE Political Wing Leader Thamil Selvan. She was caught with her new lover while escaping from the LTTE.
The Army has now withdrawn the cream of its fighting units. Yesterday's operation to rescue civilians was conducted primarily by fresh Special Forces recruits from 4 SF who drew a cable and inflated tyre tubes to save trapped civilians crossing the lagoon/sea.
The 59, for example, is operating with a batallion of 4SF but primarily with 1 Mechanized Infantry with two platoons from 3 Mechanized Infantry in the reserve. Since what is left now is a clearing operation, the going is easy for them.

1. sight - vp was chased from place to place by SLDFs. he lost all his beautifully decorated bunkersand instead landed in crudely dug ditches. he was forced to live there 24/7 staring at sand and darkness. man, this is unbelievably tortouring. just think about it.
2. smell - the crudely dug bunkers obviously didn't have toilet facilities. the stench of shit, urine (old and new), dead bodies, sea breeze, soil, sand, sweat, unwashed body ordour, etc. would have been simply UNBEARABLE.
3. hearing - all bad news all the way 24/7. ppl weeping loud. shell/firing noise everyday. unlike in a 30 ft bunker, a crude shallow bunker doesn't take away the noise.
4. taste - obviously vezapillai had VERY good taste of cuisine. his fat arse is a good example. but he lost the luxury of good meals in the NFZ. very few ingrediaents, few ways to cook. eating ANYTHING in the stench of horrible smells all around would have been another big form of torture.
5. touch - there is no bathing/washing facilities in a shallow bunker. hot weather, parasites in sand, skin rashes, no sex, restrictiveness of the shallow bunker would have been like hell 24/7
6. all this on top of mental anguish. knowing very well the looming defeat, death and destruction, end of the TE dream and all the other 5 forms of torture would have been horrible. can't imagine how vezapillai managed.

Our soldiers must find as many of the mahaveer ID cards as possible. I heard that they have been discarded by the mahaveer famlies in and around the lagoon before they crossed over to the government controlled territory.
We must try to recover as many of these cards as possible to identify the mahaveer families from regular civilians.

May 17, Colombo: An LTTE plot to save their hardcore leaders from capture by the security forces using a high-level international envoy is unraveling in Sri Lanka.
A highly placed government source said a monitored conversation of LTTE's chief negotiator Kumaran Pathmanadan, has revealed that the LTTE is planning to give the names of hardcore Tiger cadres to the high-level envoy as aid workers of UN and ICRC.
According to the sources a telephone call was placed to the envoy from Malaysia questioning whether he has obtained the list of names from the LTTE.
Informed sources say the high-level envoy is to hand over the list to the Sri Lankan government when he meets the government officials to secure the rescue of these senior LTTE cadres under the guise of international humanitarian aid workers.

Naming roads as proposed is not the best way in getting extra mileage of our great achievement.
If we can make 20 mil hearts beat in unison in carrying the core message,
"There exists no space in settling grievances through violent means in Sri Lanka".
Legends live in hearts and minds of people. What ever we do we must remain committed to make Tamils of Sri Lanka feel that they are the real winners of this achievement and feel the same way as we are. We must now look out for the best reconciliation methods/tools available to mankind and make Tamils feel they are free and secured and can enjoy basic human feelings of life.
I am not so sure though. Sinhalese extremists may try to glorify this win “in-your-face” as Nilambare put. I also think, as mentioned before, GoSL must handle beyond this point as professionally as they handled the war up to this point.

First, I didn't say rename ALL roads; I said "Many Streets" in honor of the SLDF officers who led us to victory, and the really noteworthy rank-and-file RanaViru heroes to fell in the process.
Second, the "goodwill" of the Tamil people, on average, is paper thin. They fully realize that they have been deprived of their monoethnic EELAM which would give them EXCLUSIVE UNEQUAL RIGHTS in EELAM, and EQUAL RIGHTS elsewhere in Sri Lanka. Don't expect them to be happy about the LOSS of A GREAT DEAL like that. I would not be happy if I was denied it EITHER.
Third, this whole thing about "winning the hearts and minds of the Tamil people" is bass ackwards.
What I mean is, this "tamil Grievances" thing that we are supposed to feel GUILTY ABOUT is largely manufactured to DEMONIZE US, TO PUSH US ONTO THE DEFENSIVE, and MAKE IS EASY TO JUSTIFY & DEMAND UNEQUAL RIGHTS. Each one of these charges can be shown to be MANUFACTURED, SELECTIVELY INTERPRETED to serve the SEPARATIST agenda.
For example, remember that the Black July Riot took place after 4 years of attacks against Govt officials and Sinhala people, when 13 soldiers bodies were brought to Colombo. Those were DELIBERATE PROVOCATIONS. I agree with the thrust of your arguments.
I did not mean 'all streets' what I meant was streets in that part of the country. And also I was sensitive about doing this straight away to create an impression ‘yes now we are here we do things the way we want” type. We shouldn’t do that.
In fact there are so many streets in SL named after useless politicians which can be re-named to honour our fallen heroes!.
I am totally against race-based regions, jobs, services and everything going with it.
I am also advocating that we can not have areas in SL where only some ethnic groups can live. Every SLankan must be free to live and work anywhere they like and can afford to.

Ananda, guilt trip of the Tamils aside, If we are naming roads, we should at least do it half half. Both sides fought a war. Tamils (this must be the way ordinary Tamils would be feeling, since most of them use to love the old LTTE) lost Sri Lankans won. Although VP went nuts, there were quite a few LTTE cadres even the army admire. If we are naming roads, we should put their names as well. This should not have anything to do with the guilt trip.
But maybe there should not be a constant reminder of this war and we should not name roads under our war heroes.

Guyz, I have seen our fellows mention about naming the road by fallen heroes.
Personally I think it is not a good sign.
- We have a true respect for them..so it should not be show in the way same as we name the roads by Politicians
- If we name the roads by their names, it will make people in those area more distant from others. That will help LTTE like proxies to again brainwashed them
- Thirdly Road should be named on the best scientific and practical way for the Highway codes. Like in the developed countries.
One problem we having is we mix our patriotism and politics with naming road, building roads and even everything..They should be treated separately for the best interest of the country and the industry/service sector...

Velu, in his young days was charismatic and could hold the imagination of his followers. To further assist, the weed killer was in-effective; the Sri Lnakan state had abt 2000 out-dated rifles and parade ground cannon. It was a marching band, one which had only once faught a few JVP guerillas armed with sticks and knives. And the SLA was largely moronic, bombastic and was led largely by a bad attitude with no recognizable aptitude.
Today the game is different. KP or whoever takes over does not have a vulnerably gullible following even among the most avid Sri lanka haters. We live in a world where news travels fast, and fiction is difficult to sustain. The world is suspicious and afraid of the tamil tigers. They may resort to creating a new brand name for the struggle, but even then whether the new outfit will be able to accomplish even half of what Velu and his band of barely literate thugs did, will remain to be seen.
My conclusions at this point;
LTTE may have a name change, attempt to form a govt in exile and canvass international community assistance for a seperate state which may not be carved out militarily, but in stages.
On SL's side, the govt is now free to take advantage of the situation to bring in developmental activity in verifiable ways, build roads, electricity and running water, build schools and invite investors etc in the NE.

What Canada, the UK and other diaspora hotspots are reaping is the direct result of the GoSL allowing the massacres of '83 after which those countries very generously opened their doors to hundreds of thousands of Sri Lankans, mostly Tamils, who were now deathly afraid of their own government.
If the GoSL in '83 had stepped in to halt the rampage that killed thousands and destroyed countless homes, lives and businesses these countries would never have been forced into a position to have to accept so many Sri Lankans in the first place.
Perhaps a little educated perspective might do you some good.
The LTTE are deserving of an ignoble fate but the diaspora problems are the fruit of Sri Lankan racism and a direct result of substantial GoSL failure to protect its own citizens.
No slaughter in '83 = no mass exodus to Europe and Canada.
No mass exodus = no diaspora problem.
Yet for all of this many Sri Lankans cry out foul to these other Governments and try to tell them how to handle the diaspora problem but these same Sri Lankan folks get apoplectic if any of those governments try to tell the GoSL how to handle their business.
Sri Lanka is very good at blaming former colonial masters for their mistakes but conveniently ignore problems of their own doing. Time for everyone to grow up and grow a pair as they say.

Colombo, 17 May, (Asiantribune.com): Latest report emerging from the war zone reveals that Prabhakaran’s body has been recovered and it has been flown to an Army camp in Colombo for DNA testing and to confirm it medically.
At the time of filing this report it is learnt that Sri Lankan Army has so far recovered more than 35 dead bodies of the Tigers and they continue to collect more bodies.
It is learnt that except for Dwaraka, the only daughter of Prabhakaran who is away somewhere in Dublin for her higher studies, said to be holding a Swedish Nationality Passport, all the other members of the family - Prabhakaran (father), Charles Anthony (son), Balachandran (son) and Mathivathani(wife) have deceased according to an unconfirmed report emerging from an army source, who wanted to remain anonymous.
In the meantime, Sri Lanka President Mahinda Rajapaksa who arrived early this morning and received a heroic welcome at the international airport at Katunayake, will not be delivering an address to the nation as earlier planned.
According to a source in the Presidential Secretariat, it is now learnt that he will be filing a report in the Sri Lanka Parliament on Tuesday 19 May, regarding victory over the Tamil Tigers and the end of the three decade old scourge of terrorism in the country.
