Prepare for the end!

DefenceWire wishes to announce with great authority that we are now approaching the last days of the LTTE in its known form. We wish to answer some of the key questions on people's minds today.

Prabhakaran

The last confirmed sighting of the LTTE Leader came on the 26th of March. This was when a mid-level cadre, an eye witness, surrendered to the Army. There are 'indications' of Prabha's presence still. This is how we 'know' he is there.

For example, when monitoring LTTE transmissions in code, LTTE field 'commanders' may request to talk to Banu or Poddu, at which point, the answer given in code states that "They have been called for a meeting". Another indicator is the "do-or-die" mentality of the remaining hardcore cadres. They will not fight so hard unless it is to protect their leader.

Prabhakaran is still believed to be in Mullaivaikkaal. Mullaivaikkaal is divided into Mullaivaikkaal proper, Vellamullaivaikkaal and Karayarmullaivaikkaal. The Army is in both Karayarmullaivaikkaal and Vellamullaivaikkaal.

LTTE fighting stength and morale

Based on our estimates, we can reasonably assume a cadre strength of around 200 hardcore fighters and un unknown number of soft core cadres. Their morale is low, as they have realized the end is near. But our readers must understand that any soldier fights well when they face imminent death.

Although the main reason behind these cadres' willingness to fight to their death is that they have no other alternative, the Army still has a healthy respect for their bravery, commitment and capability.

The ground reality is that the Tigers are fighting hard. Recent fighting in Karayarmullaivaikkaal saw the Tigers even recapturing lost bunkers and holding them for 8 hours until being driven-out or killed by the Army. The game will continue only till the hard core reserve is burnt-out. Burnt-out hard core reserves will be easy picking for the elite soldiers of the Army.

Military Intelligence, which has been gradually cultivating a 'relationship' with senior LTTE leaders indicate that the remaining Tiger strength will fight to its death. Although some of the LTTE leaders earlier indicated a willingness to defect, they soon realized their fate at the hands of the Army. Knowing there is nowhere to go, the only option these senior leaders and their cadres have is to fight to their death.

The nature of the operation

Even in this very last phase, the Army has not altered its winning formula, which we at DefenceWire revealed to the world for the first-time back in 2007-8. The formula is the two doctrines "Kill 10 a day" and "Don't die for our land, let them die for theirs".

Even the hardest stone starts to crack when beaten continuously. The Tigers are no exception. Although there are casualties to regular troops, it minimizes overall risks like exhaustion and fatigue, dependency and risk of undue danger to elite units etc.

DefenceWire has received credible information that either today or tomorrow, both the 58 and 59 Divisions will cross into the NFZ. An area, roughly 2 miles long and 2 miles wide, roughly half the size of the NFZ has been declared a CSZ.

The final scenario

As the Army moves into the areas surrounding the NFZ, Tigers and their hostages will move into the CSZ. It is the Sri Lanka Army that is dictating terms to the LTTE and deciding when, where, how and by whom the LTTE leader and his associates are killed. There is nothing anyone can do to prevent this. There will not be any high-profile prisoners lingering in state prisons in two weeks.

From Bottomline

While still being the Tiger spokesman, he also commanded the recent battles in the Mannar region. Thereafter, Tiger chief V. Prabhakaran appointed ex-policeman B. Nadesan and Puleethevan as spokesmen. While deployed at the battlefront, Ilanthirayan’s main duties centered around Vellamullivaikkal. On Sunday, May 10 mornings, he arrived near the Vellamullivaikkal/Karayamullivaikkal Tiger forward defence lines, escorted by his bodyguards. He had come on an inspection tour; little realising that death was also following him closely. While Ilanthirayan was inspecting and issuing instructions to his cadres, from the other end in Sri Lanka Army controlled area, he was being keenly observed through powerful telescopes by experienced marksmen, an army sniper and his assistant.
Ilanthirayan, who was frequently talking over his I-Com radio set, was being covered by his bodyguards, and the Army sniper couldn’t get a clear view of his target. The Army sniper, incidentally deployed only during daytime, waited patiently for around one-and-a-half hours, to get a clear shot at his target. At last he got an opportunity, when Ilanthirayan was visible through his telescope. At once the Army sniper pressed the trigger of his rifle, and the next moment he saw Ilanthirayan fall. Taken unawares, the bodyguards opened fire at the direction from which the shot originated, but the Army marksman was able to pick seven more targets, and a number of Ilanthirayan’s bodyguards were eliminated.

- Tamilnet -

39 + 40 = 79 mentally ill ????

U f____ kidding me TN, it has to be 1000+ mentally ill in NFZ!

Infact, all Eelamists are 'Mentally ill'. So the count could go up as high as 500,000+

Maaaaaaan... is the Tamil Diasspora and the US, UK, Canada, EU, UN etc. this dumb to believe something like this???

According to Bottomline, SLA has a sniper pool of about 1000 that is normally based in Diyatalawa. That is a massive contingent. The snipers are now operating in the frontlines causing havoc to the LTTE like what happened to Rassiah Illiyatharan. The same fate awaits the top LTTE leadership. The sniper contingent is led by Lt. Col. Sanjay Wanasingha, son of former Army Commander Lt Gen. Hamilton Wanasinghe.

NOLTTE=Peace said...

CASC,

The bottomline does not say that we have 1000 snipers. What it says is we have successfully taken 1000 targets.

A sniping rifles are massively expensive.

I wish we had 1000 sniper contingent. If it was the case, we would have won the war sooner.

LTTE Lobby

The LTTE lobby has been doing a better job than the GoSL and other "patriotic" organizations combined. For example, an (ongoing) Yahoo poll finds that 74% of those who polled wants international community to intervene in Sri Lanka. If this an indication of what is going on then about 75% of phone calls to the likes of Miliband demands intervention.

Apparently, LTTE lobby has learned from the most successful lobby in the world, the Jewish lobby. SL Armed Forces learned from LTTE (small teams, fast navy gun boats etc) to defeat LTTE. Now, GoSL and other "patriotic" movements must learn from LTTE lobby how to defeat it.

These biased western media exclusively rely on Tamilnut and other LTTE agents planted in various NGOs. Yes we should not participate in these so called surveys and researchs that are desinged to discredit SriLanka. The results of this kind of surveys must be taken with a truck load of salt, so to speak. What matters as far as Sri Lanka is concerned is the public opinion in our country. As such we, here after, should not give credibility to dying terrorists and their western agents like Millibrand by participating in online surveys from anti Sri Lankan websites.

For me the fact that all major parties in TN talk about SL means that the people there do hate us. How can an issue no one cares about be a electoral gimmick or vote winning ploy? Like MR campaigned to eradicate terrorism because we would all support it. He didn't talk about Nepal or some other country no one cared about.

Sorry. My error. Read the article too fast. As you mentioned, these British guns are very expensive. Island or Nation mentioned one corporal who had taken over 80 targets before he got killed by another LTTE sniper. Incredible feat for one person. Interesting to note that we have family members of former service commanders who are following in their elders footsteps. Gen Wanasingha's son is in charge of the sniper program. Gen Wanasingha lost a nephew, a brigadier, in the Elephant Pass debacle. Current Air Force Commander's father was a former Air Force Chief. Current Air Force commander lost a brother and brother-in-law when the LTTE shot down two Avros in the 1990s.

I totally agree with Loku Banda-UK

However, I also feel that priests [from whatever religion], if joining politics must revoke priesthood. Politics is too corrupt for priests and men of the cloth to dabble in.

I myself am not a religious man, but venerate Lord Buddha for his saving grace and his brilliant philosophy. I visit temples only for the peaceful experience and also to accompany my family, but I’m ashamed at Buddhist monks who create political parties or those who join them. Then soon after they are zooming around Colombo in their Prado’s and wearing robes of expensive materials, wearing $300 Gucci [Sheikh] slippers bought in Dubai, meeting their other monk friends at Deli-France for breakfast.

These are only my humble views.

Loku Banda -UK said...

You have very much exaggerated the situation. Yes it is bad for monks to enter politics but they don't do all the things you have mentioned.

JHU was the last of the sectarian parties. We need it now because all other communities have their own party while we have no one. I am sure JHU will give up if all the parties I mentioned before are banned.

Will the folks in SL accept English ( which is so important for international business development )to be the main language?

Are the SL citizens prepared to accept meritoracy for university admissions as well as admission into government jobs, when there are so many rural areas?

Are the SL citizens prepared to have no official religon like in Singapore ie all religons are considered equal?

Knowing that SL cannot afford to support a bloated civil service are the SL citizens prepared to accept privatization of water, electrictity, telecoms, postal services, road works, sewerage, garbage collection, eventhough SL consumers will likely pay more for these privatized services - so that SL does not have to run to the IMF for loans ?

Are the SL citizens prepared to accept privatized highway construction and pay toll for its usage?

In the same token, are the good folks in SL prepared to accept the creation of private universities including private medical colleges on the understanding that the government cannot afford to build many more universities?

Are SL politicians prepared to allow the private sector to become the main engine of growth?

Are SL politicians prepared dissolve their ethnic based parties to create only multi-ethnic parties?

Only way to get these in order is to get petty politics out of the administration. if and when we finished the war thats going to be the best opprtunity to rebuild sri lanka. We will never get this chance again. We need somebody like GR or SF for the task.

I am not an expert in warfare or medicine but I would expect his apron to have at least a few blood stains, just as in those war movies. How come? Have I seen too many war movies.

Obama: Sri Lanka must end warfare

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Barack Obama is asking the Sri Lankan government to end the violence and alleviate civilian suffering in that nation's civil war.

Obama called on Sri Lanka's government Wednesday to "stop the indiscriminate shelling" that has killed hundreds of civilians. He urged the government to give United Nations' humanitarian teams access to civilians trapped between warring parties.

Obama called on the Tamil Tiger rebels to lay down their weapons and release civilian captives. He said the situation there is a humanitarian crisis that could turn into a catastrophe.

Doctors in Sri Lanka say last weekend's warfare alone may have killed 1,000 people.

I may not have heard correctly but did he say that international agencies should be given access to IDPs (as if they weren't already)?

If he did, he must be one badly informed president!

Absolutely NO PROBLEM!

Obama asked Sri Lanka to "stop indiscriminate shelling" and "allow humanitarian agencies access"....But he also asked the LTTE to "lay down their arms".

So, nothing has changed.....

Brown used the same words some weeks ago.

They [LTTE] need to lay down their arms first, otherwise how do you allow humanitarians in? They will get shot. We cannot allow them access until LTTE hand over their weapons and all is safe. Otherwise we are responsible for these humanitarians safety.

US tried real hard to save LTTE in the last moment. They threatened the president with bogus war crimes also. It is very unlikely that they embark on a military mission against Sri Lanka to save the worst terrorist world has ever seen. Such a dirty act will an enormous dark patch on the face of USA. Furthermore, I don't think that they will try to break through the Indian Navy cordon in Mulathivu. Regardless, Obama shall respect the democratic will of Sri Lankans. Furthermore, Obama has no business in internal matters of Sri Lanka since he is not a citizen of Sri Lanka. My simple response to Obama is to say F__k off.

hehehe.
not because that's what we really want (we want to kill the pigs), BUT it would certainly go a long way in responding DPL-like, just for kicks.

booboo said...

Spearhead is right. Why can't we say we will let the red cross in if LTTE release the civilians. Even if they released the civilians, we can argue that all the civilians are not released, de-mining is not done etc.

Obama tells Sri Lanka to stop shelling civilians, Tigers to surrender

WASHINGTON (AFP) — President Barack Obama Wednesday urged Sri Lanka to stop "indiscriminate shelling" of civilians and the Tamil Tiger rebels to surrender, warning of a humanitarian "catastrophe" otherwise.

"Without urgent action, this humanitarian crisis could turn into a catastrophe," Obama told reporters, with the United Nations estimating that up to 50,000 civilians may be trapped in the ferocious Sri Lankan fighting.

"So I urge the Tamil Tigers to lay down their arms and let civilians go. Their forced recruitment of civilians and their use of civilians as human shields is deplorable," the US president said.

"I'm also calling on the Sri Lankan government to take several steps to alleviate this humanitarian crisis," he added.

"First, the government should stop the indiscriminate shelling that has taken hundreds of innocent lives, including (in) several hospitals."

US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton called Tuesday on the warring sides in Sri Lanka to stop fighting immediately and allow trapped civilians to escape the conflict.

But Obama himself has been silent on the issue, prompting Time magazine to comment that the president was "failing" a critical test of his young administration.

In his remarks outside the White House, Obama acknowledged that "with all the big issues going on," Sri Lanka "hasn't received much attention."

Attempting to put that right, the president said "the government should live up to its commitment to not use heavy weapons in the conflict zone," and should grant UN and Red Cross aid workers access to suffering civilians.

"The United States stands ready to work with the international community to support the people of Sri Lanka in this time of suffering. I don't believe that we can delay," Obama said.

"Going forward, Sri Lanka must seek a peace that is secure and lasting and grounded in respect for all of its citizens," he said.

"More civilian casualties and inadequate care for those caught in resettlement camps will only make it more difficult to achieve the peace that the people of Sri Lanka deserve."

Dozens of civilians trapped in Tiger territory in northeast Sri Lanka were reported killed in shelling Wednesday, as both sides in the war faced renewed allegations of war crimes.

The rebels blamed advancing government forces for the bombardment, which came a day after 47 civilians died in a similar raid, according to one doctor, and in the wake of weekend attacks that the UN described as a "bloodbath."

But the island's government, which says it has the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) surrounded in just four square kilometers (1.5 square miles) of coastal jungle, said only the rebels were killing civilians.

AP version

Obama: Sri Lanka must end warfare

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Barack Obama scolded both sides of Sri Lanka's quarter-century-old civil war on Wednesday, demanding that the government stop shelling hospitals and that Tamil Tiger rebels cease using civilian shields.

Before leaving the White House to deliver a commencement speech in Arizona, Obama told reporters that the situation on the south Asian island could turn from a humanitarian crisis to a full-blown catastrophe. He strongly urged both sides to take steps to alleviate suffering.

"Tens of thousands of innocent civilians are trapped between the warring government forces and the Tamil Tigers in Sri Lanka with no means of escape, little access to food, water, shelter and medicine," Obama said on the White House's South Lawn. "This has led to widespread suffering and the loss of hundreds, if not thousands of lives."

Officials in Sri Lanka said artillery shells on Wednesday tore through a hospital for a second day, killing at least 50 and crippling the medical facility. Health workers said the government launched a wave of bombardments in the war zone this weekend and has killed as many as 1,000 people.

The Sri Lanka government says its troops are not responsible for the shelling and that the military has not fired heavy weapons in the area in weeks.

But Human Rights Watch says satellite images and witness testimony contradict that claim and has accused both sides of using the estimated 50,000 civilians packed into the tiny coastal strip controlled by the rebels as "cannon fodder."

Obama said the United States is ready to work to end the conflict.

"Now's the time, I believe, to put aside some of the political issues that are involved and to put the lives of the men and women and children who are innocently caught in the crossfire, to put them first," Obama said.

Amnesty International urged Obama to push for a truce and appealed to the U.N. Security Council to establish a commission of inquiry into violations of international law. Outside the White House, protesters have been chanting in recent days of Obama to take action.

Obama urged the Tamil Tigers to stop fighting and release civilians as a first step toward peace. "Their forced recruitment of civilians and their use of civilians as human shields is deplorable. These tactics will only serve to alienate all those who carry them out."

He also said the government should stop the "indiscriminate shelling" and the use of heavy weapons in the conflict zone. He asked the government to give the United Nations and Red Cross staff access to the 190,000 displaced civilians.

"Going forward, Sri Lanka must seek a peace that is secure and lasting and grounded in respect for all of its citizens," Obama said. "More civilian casualties and inadequate care for those caught in resettlement camps will only make it more difficult to achieve the peace that the people of Sri Lanka deserve."

Will Obama take full responsibility of Tamil homeland, ask Tamil circles
[TamilNet, Wednesday, 13 May 2009, 20:57 GMT]
As news reports quote US President Barack Obama saying Tamil Tigers to "free civilians," and Colombo government to stop indiscriminate shelling, Tamil circles in the US asked whether President Obama is prepared to take full responsibility of the Tamil homeland and whether he is prepared to give full assurance to the freedom and the aspirations of the Tamil people.

"Without urgent action this humanitarian crisis could turn into a catastrophe," Reuters quoted Obama as saying.

Many expatriate Sri Lankans are promoting contributions to the Ranaviru fund which is in it self is a meritorious and a deserving cause. In the meantime LTTE and its international network is using their collections for malicious propaganda campaign that I believe is done with a dubious ulterior motive much larger than saving Prabakaran.

In my view the expatriates have got their priorities mixed up. Their plan of action should be;-

Persuade the GOSL and also all patriotic political parties in Sri Lanka to bring forward legislation that will ensure the dependants of SLDF’s are looked after for their life on the state expenditure. This to include housing, health, primary to university education, state jobs, living expenditure, transport and other expenditure (or concessions in public transport) etc. This has to be a comprehensive legislation that every soldier who is killed or disabled do not have to depend on anyone for ever.

On the other hand the patriotic expatriates should be using the funds collected with if possible with grants from the GOSL, to counter the propaganda of LTTE using professional advertising companies and mainstream media of the west. We need to communicate the crucial aspects and draw them to websites etc. that have full information. All of us know the lies, deceptions, killings of innocents, harassing Diaspora for collections, HR violations, hostage taking, occupying the NFZ designated to civilians, shooting the civilians that attempted to flee etc. These maters should be brought through the international media by way of paid print advertisements and TV spots etc. Fist things first patriots. Let’s counter this propaganda with our might.

U know Who! said...

Obama just trying to be politically correct for the international audience. It is a routine white house circus to feed media time to time with trivial nonsense.

Just don’t waste your time on a looser; Obama will be the biggest looser as USA president even before his first three year term is over.

2. may be the doctor knew too much about LTTE leaders.

3. may be the doctor pleaded LTTE leaders to released civilians

5. may be vezapilai didn't like his talk!!

but we don't have the most important footage. i.e. footage of LTTE attacks on hopitals, etc. bcos these happen when we are not engaged (and when UAVs are not observing).

One wonders if survivor accounts will allow historians to document the last days of the “No fire zone bunker” as the LTTE defense of its final two square kilometres of territory, actually in effect its control of one massive refugee camp of perhaps twenty to thirty thousand people crumbles. The similarities are quite obvious. A leader who led his people to ruin with a nihilistic agenda, a totalitarian approach, a scorched earth policy and finally a divorce from reality and the refusal to surrender when the war was really lost. Rather like at the Yalta conference, the Sri Lankan military has taken the decision that it will accept nothing other than the unconditional surrender of the LTTE and the bringing to justice or even the elimination of the LTTE’s leader and his entourage. Similar in more recent times the US and its allies, including the UK, decided that Saddam and his senior Baath Party leaders had to be eliminated or taken out of current and future political leadership.

Bugger! I pity the historians that will venture into fatty's bunker, 'post facto' of course, to document the last days of the fat monkey. The feces and urine that would be puddled on the floor from the fat man as he lost control of his bowels and bladder as death loomed would be punishment enough. But add the 'thala thel' smell to that stench and you have a potent aroma to knock out even the most tenacious.

Cheers!

Hey Boyz and Girls (pussies),

Ananda Ayya, I will put my network at your service today but I think we were tad too late in this operation. But we have learnt (from the enemy) as usual. I think you are quite right about utilising the same methods in future. I will upload an article asap on the PatriotBlog.

With regard to our enemies I must say that I have to admire them to the extent of organisation they have gone to. And further, as they are our cousins after all I feel a certain pride in what they appear to have achieved in fooling and manipulating the suddhas.

Please keep in mind that if it was not for LTTE, SL would not have built up a formidable defence force right under the nose of our cousins across the straits. Similarly, our cousins are helping us build a formidable intelligence network for the future. No doubt, the capture of some Tiger Bigwigs will assist in this.

So, I would like to once again invite our cousins to join us. After all the game is now nearly over. Together we have come to a point where SL is a force to be reckoned with. Your motives might have been different to ours (you wanted to remain masters of the island and we just wanted equality). However, now everyone can have what they always been claiming in any case; equality.

So I make this one last plead to our brothers and sisters to desist from attacking your mother country any more. This is the very last request I make. I hope we can hear from some of you regarding any willingness to collaborate.

Finally, my hard copy of Philip Baldeaus' book "A description of the great and most famous isle of Ceylon" has arrived.
It would be of interest to know that "Ceylon" in this English translation is a corruption of the Dutch "Ceylan" (which in tern would have been a corruption from Portugeuse who variably called it Ceylom (seehalam- heh heh) or Ceialo (seehalae).

I this book originally written in the 16 hundreds, it is of interest that they refer to the people of the south ruled by Candy as Cingaleses while the the people of Jaffnapatam are called Belale (Vellalah). They said to speak the "Malabar" language (note that the Dutch were well aware of Coromandel as disticnt from Malabar). There is no mention of Coromandel (later Madras state- since 1968, Tamilnadu) as being related to "Ceylon". Just for your info here is an excerpt from the book. It is found on the chapter on the Cingaleses:

"They pry their daily devotions to a certain idol call'd sambaja, by prostrating themselves upon the ground, and afterwards clasping their hands together over their heads. But concerning the religious worship of the cingaleses we shall have occasion to say more in the following treatise, which in effect differs very little from the Malbars and those of the Coromandel, except that they are not altogether such bigots, the Emperor of Ceylon allowing Liberty of Conscience to all nations"

(heh heh heh)- In the words of an enemy these pearls of compliment. The house of cards that Eelam-claim is based is so utterly flimsy that it is unbelievable that they have been able to keep this propaganda going for so long. I give them the option of either retracting the lies or face something they had not dreamt of in thier wildest nightmares.

That's right. A Gvt is always at a disadvantage when it comes to 'obeying the laws'. LTTE rats are taking every step to exploit that.

MOD certainly must do something about the fake photos displayed on Pukegal and expose their fake propoganda.

It might be that MOD does not want to name it as it may want to do this by not providing publicity to Pukegal.

MOD might have to point out 'some LTTE media' or something like that or whatever it is it has to be done. BBC will shortly pick it up otehrwise.

Gvt SL has to adopt an approch to be pro-active in these - 'get there first before the enemy strikes'.

`Farah` seeks Norway`s help

Friday, 29 December 2006 - 9:49 AM SL Time

The owning company of the Jordanian merchant vessel `Farah 3` which still remains in LTTE custody in Mullaitivu has sought Norwegian assistance to get the vessel released, a Norwegian embassy spokesman told the Daily Mirror.

However the Norwegians have advised the owners to coordinate with the government and other relevant parties to have the vessel released as the mandate of the facilitators is only to communicate between the two warring sides and not carry out rescue operations.

Subsequently the vessel owners as well as the local agents held talks with the Foreign Ministry yesterday on moves to salvage the stricken vessel.

`It does not mean we will not assist. We can help with communicating with the LTTE. We have advised the owners to communicate with the government to have the ship removed,` the Norwegian embassy`s acting spokesman Tom Knappskog said.

LTTE media spokesman Daya Master said he was aware of the `Farah 3` owners approaching the Norwegians for help but added the vessel still remained stranded in Mullaitivu together with the cargo of 14,000 MT of rice. The vessel was on its way from Kakinada in India to Durban in South Africa, when it developed engine trouble and requested its local agent to arrange for the assistance of a tug boat from Colombo. The vessel however drifted into rebel waters and was seized together with the 25 member crew.

Ship Captain Ramaz Abdul Jabar and owner Bosun Mohamed Abdul Aziz Ahmed Alsiturman confirmed at a meeting with the Sri Lanka Monitoring Mission and the Government Secretariat for Coordinating the Peace Process (SCOPP) this week that armed LTTE cadres forcibly boarded the vessel after firing gun shots into the air and proceeded to force the weighing of the anchor, raided the vessel and took the crew to the shore after firing more shots.

The crew members were handed over to the ICRC on Tuesday and were subsequently driven to Colombo where they briefed the media on their ordeal with the rebels who had also looted expensive communication equipment and computers from the vessel.

The Sri Lanka Monitoring Mission (SLMM) meanwhile said in a statement yesterday that the LTTE had acted contradictory to its commitment to the CFA by taking matters into its own hands without permitting the government to rescue the vessel.

`SLMM reiterates that the LTTE has no right to the sea and that the Government of Sri Lanka has the sole right to protect Sri Lankan territorial waters,` the SLMM said.

The SLMM on Saturday informed the LTTE that the Government would conduct a rescue mission to salvage the Jordanian ship M/V Farah III and its crew and strongly advised the LTTE to permit the operation to be executed.

`Despite SLMM`s advice to allow for the Government to conducts its commitments to Farah III, LTTE ignored the advice and took the matter into their own hands,` the SLMM said.

"Again, you seem to contradict yourself. How could the LTTE use civilians as a human shield, and thus endanger their lives, if there was a permanent ceasefire? How could the SLA try to eliminate the LTTE, if there was a permanent ceasefire?"

Because it wouldn't be "permanent." The 2002 CFA was supposed to be permanent but the LTTE had other plans. Human shields allow the LTTE not to honor its side of the ceasefire while expecting the govt. to.

The only permanent end of hostilities will be the defeat of the LTTE. A "permanent ceasefire," along the farcical lines of the 2002 CFA would only prolong the agonized status quo in the island. We need change, and for that the LTTE has to go.

"Since you haven’t challenged my point about the East being just as bad, if not worse, under Pillayan/Karuna compared to the LTTE, I’ll assume that you agree with me."

When you assume, you make an "ass" out of "u" and "me."

I have not come across a single eastern Tamil who told me that things are currently worse than they were under the LTTE. You can't justify the massive child conscription to feed the northern war and the onerous "double taxation" system with the "law and order" enforced by the LTTE's kavalthurai. In any case, the mass murder of dissidents under the LTTE belies your belief that things were better back then.

"I just don’t think the SLA will be the vehicle for achieving that, just as it hasn’t been in the East, or in Jaffna for that matter. Real change comes from below."

We'll get that "real change" with the LTTE gone from the picture.

"If you’re saying it’s OK for the SLA to attack LTTE vehicles without regard for the civilians in the immediate vicinity - when those vehicles aren’t even firing on the SLA - then that’s really no different from the suicide bomber who attacks a politician and brushes off the civilian deaths as collateral."

Poor comparison. The nature of SL democracy is such that politicians are quite expendable and easily replaceable. In other words, killing a politician won't change anything at all.

Totalitarian organizations featuring personality cults like the LTTE have a different, more unstable dynamic- the loss of a certain key leader, with Thalaivar on the top of the list, can change the entire equation. Karuna got into a tiff with Pottu Amman & Friends and the next thing you know the LTTE lost the entire East!

This is still just PC/DLP statements:
GOSL should have ample time before UNSC does anything as physical intervention, which I think will never happen anyway:

however, I REALLY think GOSL should make statement in reply, cover all the PC stuff in it, and LAY FORTH DEMANDS such as LTTE totally surrendering ro SLSF etc, if the GOSL is to even consider accomodating NGOs to go inside NFZ, which we don't have to do, but it's good to pretend that we want to and make clear that LTTE surrender is necessary to do it...which they'll never do, we go on as usual, and do what we need to do, and we also made the UNSC happy by acknowledging its request.

Yeah, This is a good suggestion. But make sure that we do not get bound by things. The really stupid things we have done in this war is:

1. NFZ. We should never have called it a NFZ, we should have called it some other name such as reduced fire zone or what ever.
2. GR saying Hospitals are legitimate targets. That is why Tamilnet is putting so much pictures of hospitals.
3. No heavy weapon fire in to the zone. We should have said something like if LTTE stop firing at us. Look how U.S. respond to stop air raids.

Therefore should decide a good diplomatic response to this, but must be very careful when we pick the words. Otherwise the fucking International media would be quoting this all the time to get at us.

Simple suggestion would be
We will stop firing
If LTTE lay down their arms and surrender.
Let the civilians go.

Which would never happen. So we can go on our merry ways killing the rest of the vermins.

Spearhead said...

if the 2 of us ordinary (at least on my part) dudes can see this and understand the need for such a statement, why the HECK can't the MOD or SL govt see this? and issue a figgin' statement, ASAP? just to please the whiners?

Is there anyway we can suggest this to a big shot at MOD/GOSL ??? I write to MOD all the time, but who the f knows if they even read those emails?
ARRGGGHH!! frustrating; a simple 25 word statement that can mean a whole lot!

I think Obama is seems to be on path of self destruction just Prez Carter where his top man former Mayor of Atlanta Andrew Young often shot from his hip making him unpopular thus bringing in a very right wing Reagan to power. Here Obama himself seems to be directly firing from his hip. He seems to have made two mistakes in one day says an American who watch the news an hour ago observed where Obama seems to be critical of the humanitarian situation in SL and doing a U turn on the release of those photos of their POWs thus going back on their pledge on transparency. People too saw how US made missile from Pakistani helicopter gunship demolishing a civilian house in NW Pakistan. People too saw in the same news cast where the British PM pledging £12 million to help the escaping refugees from Taliban. People here fully support any action against a bunch of terrorist where ever they are and they fully support the military action against the terrorists in SL who have killed the democratically elected leaders and ethnically cleansed the minorities among them. If the reporters in these capitals only ask the front line Police or the public in general what they think of it then one will be surprised how supportive they are on the action taken against these terrorists in SL.

We must use the words like "immediate ceasefire" with conditions and some uncertain words. Then we can shift the direction of the media. What media do is SELLING NEWS. We must provide them some news that they can sell. Otherwise they take the LTTE propaganda.

for example
[government can consider IMMEDIATE CEASEFIRE if LTTE lay down weapons and surrender]

"LTTE never lay down arms"

or

[government can TEMPORALLY HALT THE MILITARY ADVANCE if the civilians are released]
"LTTE never release civilians"

or

[government is in URGENT discussion with ground commander about a temporary CEASEFIRE possibly on next week]
"war will be over in one week"

Referendum if any, should only be held in entire Sri Lanka and not in north and east. LTTE has killed or chased out every one who would oppose them. Their performance on the grip on votes of people was amply demonstrated by the last presidential election. So it will be a one sided referendum if held only in those areas.

My belief is we should have a countrywide referendum on a wide equal opportunity legislation that will put 'grievance' BS to rest. It will also help many voiceless masses of all communities especially Sinhalese. The decision makers should be thinking fast how to get the current Diaspora painted world opinion on majority demonizing a minority opinion reversed. Equal opportunity act with much fanfare would be the best.

Exiled Patriot said...

As soon as the LTTE is finished and we captured all territories, re-settling IDPs must done expeditiously. Otherwise, I am afraid, that these places will breeding ground for dissent (especially with NGO vultures and foreign press all over them and we call "lose the peace'"

Most regular tamil folk in the NE, although sympathetic to the LTTE cause, are more likely to gwt on with their lives when re-settled in their home environment than when they are confined to these camps with nothing to do but "reproduce'"

Sinhalese must also be careful not to be in their faces, e.g. celebrating Vesak in Killinochchi is a gimmick for the Buddhist Sangha but we have keep in mind that people in that part of region are predominantly Hindu. Pre-1983 mistakes must not be repeated. Re-establishment of government rule of course should be priority but if southern institutions are to establish a foot hold in these regions, it must done gradually and in a sensible manner. A Buddha-poojawa everyday at the Killinochchi junction with Pirith chanting over loudspeakers will set-off the next rebellion for sure!

Yes. There is no need to hold referendum. Our focus should be on development. People should have something to do. Re-direct all their energies to develop their regions and the country. There is so much to be done" build roads, develop schools, new banks, hotels and resorts and even factories. The entire NE is going to trigger our economic resurgence. People in the south should become part of that and by no means should we be envious.

I have two close family members in the business world and they can't wait to get in there. The south will boom with the NE.

Yes. No referendum for separatism. Nobody ever gave land away free or based on a referendum. These are dumb ideas coming from the post-imperial, "liberated" , White-European societies who are trying to wash away years of crimes against humanity during their days of empire-building.

We are still in early stages of our development. We have to follow the examples of countries like Singapore, Malaysia and China to model our economic and social development. Our societies are not advanced enough to have a truly meaningful and free public discourse on these issues. Just look at our politicians...most of them are a bunch of jokers,e.g. Mervin Silva, Chandrika K, Rohitha Bogellagama, Ranil W, Gamini Lokuge. For Heaven's sake, we can't even have a proper election in the cricket board.

So no referendum. The country stays as one until we are more advanced politically, socially and economically.

It is important to take notice of the fact that a purely Westernized model of development has failed in most third-world countries. Countries in the east that have developed fast had strong governments that told people what to do. e.g. China, Malaysia, Singapore and now Vietnam. They also told the Western do-gooders to go fuck themselves. The only thing we should ask from the Obama administration is to borrow their election slogan "Yes, We Can!" But then again we already know that don' we? After all, the Sri Lankan Army is on the beaches of Mullaitivu, fighting and winning battles that nobody thought we could!

Obama is just paying lip servicing to human rights. You must understand his political platform is a liberal one. He has to be seen as a liberal democrat who protects human freedom and promotes freedom around the world. Sort of anti-George Bush who by the way was the best American Friend we ever had. We need to erect his statue somewhere in the NE. He told us "go forth and kill terrorists ye cowards! I shall protect you from my Heaven in Washington DC. The fury of Hell awaits all terrorists.." or something like that.

On the same token, it is harder for Obama to commit to any kind of aggressive intervention overseas. So let SL Army march on amid the din of foreign press and street protest in Toronto!

Ian,

As you know, we discussed this EO legislation earlier.

We can use this as a very good weapon due to a number of reasons:

1. Many of these do-gooders in the west have this kind of legislation

2. their arguments are always based on 'every community should be able to live with equal rights' Right good and well. Here we go, we say and put the legislation.

3.If Tamils can en mass live under these conditions in those westerns countries, we ask them why can’t they do that in SL. Noting that over 200,000 Tamils for eg live in Canada they say.

4. West can not ask SL to anything that they themselves don't do in their own countries, i.e. not going beyond 'equal opportunity' in the law. They never advocate separate states.

5. As Ian's point, if anything this will help Sinhala masses.

I think Gvt should serious consider this. Even better they do introduce it RIGHT NOW rather than even waiting for the game to finish. The game and the politics should go hand in hand.

Someone has to the government about this NOW. This is called Gvt being pro-active.

1. Step one, create a Legislation, give lot of publicity to this. I am sure, all of us have equal right now, but let us create some BS legislation anyway.

2. Step 2. Get some experts from U.S. AUS, UK, Canada and ask them to create and indicator to identify whether there is equality among races.
i.e. Percentage enrolled in schools, universities, government sector e.t.c. or any other measurement criteria.

3. Step three, check whether this criteria is satisfied or not, then fix it.

I am sure, if we apply the criterias these fuckers give us, to their own countries it would fail. Specially in Australia, where the aborginies are treated appallingly. They definitely deserve a separate country.
