UN on Sri Lanka: A Comedy of Errors

These days, talking about Sri Lanka means talking about the Sri Lankan military, its elite politicians and diplomats and…oh yes…The UN. Are we trying to single-out the UN or the “West” here? Not really. The UN is singling its own self out. In fact, the UN looks more ridiculous now than it did when it allowed the Tutsis to be killed in 1994. If you want proof, read the news items in the world press about ‘leaked’ UN reports where the dead Tamil civilians increased from 6,000 to 20,000 almost overnight. In another report, 13,130 civilians had ‘disappeared’ after arriving in the camps.

The UN, certain “Western Governments” and the pro-LTTE Tamil Diaspora are all saying, pretty much the same thing these days. They just cannot accept the fact that Sri Lanka, comprising of all ethnic groups, have prevailed over racist separatism. But this is a simplified way of looking at things.

The United Nations is primarily a tool to police developing countries—to keep them in line with the “West”. It seems that the morally righteous “West” is trying to make the rest of the world tag its line. There is no evidence to prove otherwise. The UN has a track record of selective interventions. The reasons for not intervening, for example in Rwanda, were because President Bill Clinton thought it inappropriate. So we know very clearly who is behind the current UN ‘actions’ against Sri Lanka.

An intervention by the UN in Rwanda was ‘inappropriate’ in 1994 because the UN, backed by the USA were humiliated in Somalia just before the Rwandan genocide started. The use of the word genocide was forbidden in the description of the violence in Rwanda. What in the world did the failed Somali excursion of the USA have to do with those poor Tutsis? Why were they punished by the same International Community who now screams genocide at the Sri Lankan state for wiping out the LTTE? The question on every Sri Lankan’s mind today is why did they all jump in to save the LTTE when they themselves opposed it and when the entire country of Sri Lanka and the rest of the free thinking world (even Communist China) wanted otherwise? What does China’s naval domination in south Asia, Iran’s generosity and Libya’s friendliness to Lanka have to do with Sri Lanka’s right to decide its national security?

The same groups running the UN from the "Western world" today allow a section of the Tamil Diaspora looters the free and undisturbed use of the word “Genocide” to describe the massacre of terrorists in Sri Lanka. How are these two things similar? Where were the Milibands, Kouchners and Clintons when Tutsi’s were massacred in the thousands for 3 months until the Interahamwe gave up on its own, tired? In fact, UN Secretary General Boutros Boutros Ghali refused to even visit Rwanda after the genocide. He was taken, almost by force to a Rwandan church to witness the horror with his own eyes. All he did even then was lie to the survivors that the UN wanted to help those dead Tutsis. Perhaps a Tutsi should have held Navi Pillai’s current position. Then that job would have made some sense.

Now that was a real genocide. Compared to that, what have the Sri Lankan Tamils faced? Large numbers of Tutsi’s were systematically removed from educational institutions in Rwanda. Even the most brilliant ones weren’t spared. In Sri Lanka, Tamil university students come to Colombo and help run the LTTE networks while surviving on government scholarships. Giving birth to a Tutsi child was a crime before and even after 1994. The birth of a Tutsi child was a closely guarded secret. The Tutsi mothers never saw the inside of the local hospital during that entire ordeal. In Sri Lanka, you walk to any hospital, even those in the south; you will see hundreds of ‘minorities’ obtaining free treatment.

No UN documents ‘leaked’ to the press about Rwanda back then. Why do they ‘leak’ now? How and why do these ‘leaks’ occur in the absence of evidence when actual facts about the Rwandan genocide could have been ‘leaked’ handsomely both before and after April 1994?

But the biggest question in our mind is that why do the Diaspora Tamils sitting comfortably abroad perpetuate such hatred when they themselves have nothing to lose or gain from continued violence in the name of separatism? The latest claim was for a Tamil Homeland. Why do Sri Lankan Tamils take this so seriously? Why do Tamils in South India, South Africa, Malaysia (including Prabhakaran’s father and Chelvanayaham), Singapore etc are demanding that the SRI LANKAN TAMILS MUST FIGHT FOR A TAMIL HOMELAND? Why don’t they do it themselves? WHY ONLY THE SRI LANKAN TAMILS, THE POOREST TAMILS ON EARTH, HAVE TO DIE IN THEIR THOUSANDS? Why can’t the Sri Lankan Tamils say NO. ENOUGH IS ENOUGH! TO HELL WITH YOUR HATRED! IT HAS BROUGHT US ONLY MISERY AND SHAME. WE CHOOSE TO LIVE, PROSPER AND COEXIST WITH THE SINHALESE. WE HAVE FINALLY EARNED THAT RIGHT!!!

If you look very closely, you will realize that the Tamil Homeland concept seems to be driven by a group of greedy Tamil elites more than lower class Tamils. The latter plays the subservient role of trooper, suicide bomber and child soldier while the rest live in luxury abroad and perpetuate the hatred. But mark these words. The day moderate Tamils start raising their heads AGAIN isn’t far away. This is all thanks to whom? Who else but the Sinhalese of course! The days of the Tamil racist is numbered in Sri Lanka.

Led by Tamilnet, and many pro-LTTE websites, TV and Radio Stations, they are stupidly planning for the next wave of destruction of Tamils in Sri Lanka.

Since many who are involved in this effort live outside Sri Lanka, they have no real concern whatsoever about the results of their actions.

They are still dreaming of mythical Tamil Homelands, and Ezhams. They want to renew their "struggle" from where Prabhakaran has stopped.

This shows their huge EGO and callous concern about the Tamil people in Sri Lanka. They still do not want to accept the reality that their "separatism" brought nothing but utter destruction for the Tamils (and other) society of Sri Lanka.

They are still not in the right wave-length to accept the fact that Sri Lankan Tamils would be much much better in a unitary society enjoying equal rights and opportunities..

They have invested too much for too long that they are suffering from the syndrome where they are reluctant to withdraw (perhaps considering it as a defeat - an ego issue?).

My sincere suggestion for TamilNet its backers and other Tamil diaspora groups are to leave the past a side, and reconcile, and get together to build a 'Unitary Sri Lanka' which brings the equal opportunities and rights for people as a whole.

This is the best opportunity in history of Sri Lanka for Tamils who supported separatism to take this historic decision. This decision at this juncture will save millions and millions of future wasted effort of man-hours (from both sides to fight and counter), which could well be spent on building and uplifting livelihoods. It would be the best decision that anyone could take at this moment in the history of Sri Lanka and Tamils.

Those who still lead separatism in your minds please take a moment and think. Think about this GOLDEN opportunity in front of you that would never be presented in history if you would continue pushing separatism and hatred.

Think again. We can move forward together for a bright future where everyone benefits under a vibrant society that thrives and flourish under one flag. You have to come out of your closet.

DO NOT BE AFRAID to take that BRAVE decision!

Since we are going to have a 300,000 army, I say we also train all of the news recruits in building/constructing infrastructure as well. Some can be also trained to become civil engineers. We also need order a large number of construction equipment and machines to transform them into an effective and speedy workforce.

We should invite Catapillar to open a factory in Sri Lanka.

This way we have a large army and an army of construction workers as well. They can build the some of the highways, railways an bridges that are sorely needed all over the country.

If trouble starts again they can go back to being full time soldiers and crush any enemy.

The economic growth of the provinces will SHOOT UP when there is sufficient highways and railways connecting them. Then conducting business an transporting goods and raw materials will be much faster. The whole island will be interconnected as never before.

With this method we will tackle the post-war environment and boost the economy at the same time.

The Top Scum Ranil Wickramasinghe apparently (subjected to verification) has realized that he is already in the garbage bins of Sri Lankan history. He wants to escape the most humiliating defeat ever in Sri Lankan political history by not competing in the next presidential election. I believe that the people of Sri Lanka should challenge to compete since he was delusional about his anti Sri Lankan garbage. What a wimp and a pimp? How about Lakshman K, Ravi K, Malik S, Jayalath J. or Tissa A. competing for presidency instead of Ranil W.

The US was going to buy the only luxury hotel in the NWFP of Pakistan to be used as a consulate. A massive suicide bomb attack has now reduced that hotel to rubble.

In Sri Lanka too, the military needs to be vigilant against these types of bommb attacks.

GoldenEagle,

Most of the heavy equipement previously made by caterpiller are now made by Indian and Chinese manufactuerers at a fraction of the cost. In fact some of the cheapest tractors in the world are made by Mahendra. Even SLA seems to be using Mahendra tractors. Their quality is very good. Like other Indian conglomerates they are into everything. Their info systems branch was invited by the GOSL to set up an IT park.

It is ok for Canada to deny entry for Champika Ranawaka who was going to Canada for an environmental conference. However, it is not ok for SL to deny entry for Bob Rae who was going to meddle with internal matters of Sri Lanka.

Bob Ray,

You are not an elected representative of Sri Lanka. No SL government ever asked you to be a mediator for anything. You shall learn to respect Sri Lankan's democratic right to live without external meddling. Mind your own business next time.

Have you read the Opinion page of the Daily Mirror On-Line dated 10th June? Does anyone know of the Doctor in the Obama orbit?

Have any of you seen a newspaper called the "Tamil Nation"? Do any of you know people like Nadesan Satyendra, Wakely Paul and Arjuna Sittampalam abd in a lesser way Dr. Vasukhi Nesiah?

Do any of you voluntarily give information to GOSL and MOD?

How could you help GOSL to stop a Peelamist ever setting foot in Sri Lanka because like the ASS, their is a possibility that new viruses could be spread?

Hope you will not think of me as an eccentric? Have you considered if LTTE started Biological Warfare - rampant viral infections in Sri Lanka and our MRI is clueless.

This is for Sam Perera:

How could you think of Dr. JJ to ever contest with that scum RW; that bugger is worse than scum because he was in and out of the Cess Pit. That fellow should be banished with Ravi K. to thimbaktu. Other fellows will fall by the way side. Anyway UNP is history!

these sakkiliyas are worse than LTTE. they are trying hard to disturb peace and create UNNECESSARY trouble for the govt and the ppl.

UTHR(J) sakkili say vezapillai was tortured. how hilarious!

1. there was no time to waste torturing a sakkiliya in the midst of the battle that ended the war. if these toilets take a look at the images, they may understand it.

2. he has NO SIGNs of torture. signs of torture are visible on through out the body. there is nothing apart from the gun shot wound.

3. look at his teeth, eyes, fingers. all in tact. these are the favourite areas in torture.

4. SL does not practice torture. that is a western concept practiced by UK police and US marines.

yoganathan, noltte, charitable,

you are saying the same thing and that IS the problem now.

we knew this coming. LTTE was only ONE manifestation of the tamil elam struggle.

there is only ONE way to solve this problem. FRUSTRATE the tamil elam project. blow up the cookie bottle.

this can be done by multiethnic colonisation of the north and east.

as long as the north remains MONO ETHNIC, tamil elamists will want it.

in other words they have ethnically "CLEANSED" it. we should DIRTY it and they will not want it thereafter.

e.g. a story

once there was a guy very (too) possessive of his things. he had to rush to the boys room and thought someone will drink his coffee!!!

so he wrote a note saying, "my saliva is in this coffee" and went.

when he cam back he found another note, "my saliva is ALSO in it".

he threw away the coffee.

this is an example how to resolve the tamil elam project.
that is the ONLY solution.

The Way We Were………

By S. Skandakumar

The year was 1965. At the conclusion of our traditional big match versus S Thomas’, the Royal team was summoned by its Principal and told that, reciprocal matches had been initiated with schools in Jaffna , and as a first step, the school’s cricket team was to proceed over the weekend, for an encounter with S John’s College.

So, a team of 14 players, comprising of a Muslim captain, 10 Sinhalese ,two Tamils, and a Burgher bundled off in the Yal Devi the following Thursday, arriving at the Jaffna railway station to a truly warm reception. Over the next two days, we played some fascinating cricket before an unprecedented and enthusiastic crowd. A challenging declaration by our captain, on the second day, in the true spirit of the game, left the Johnians around 140 runs to make from 20 overs. Their talented players rose to the task, to take them to victory, much to the delight of the very appreciative crowd. Jaffna had seen a great game of cricket, played to its highest traditions. Yes, time wasting tactics, in the face of possible defeat, were unheard of in those days!!

At the closing banquet that followed, the night air was filled with songs, in Tamil, Sinhala and English, with team members exhibiting their talents in solos and duets. The warm and generous hospitality continued into Sunday as well, before we were escorted to the railway station for a memorable send off. As the train pulled out of the platform, there was not one dry eye in the Royal team!!

Yes, there was indeed a time, when that boy from the North, was no different to his counterpart from the South, East or West……….
He was just as CARING ! There was a very good reason for this. The concept of equality was still prevalent throughout the country then, and the commonly and widely spoken language of English, made communication so easy. What happened in the ensuing years, could be summed up in just one sentence from the memoirs of a leader, who once looked to Sri Lanka as the model for his own country.

One time Prime Minister of Singapore, Lee Kwan Yew, observed, “On my subsequent visits to Sri Lanka , I watched a country of great promise, go to waste”
A product each, from S Thomas and Royal, through their actions (SWRD – “Sinhala Only”) and inaction (JRJ – 1983 Riots), were largely responsible for the ethnic divide, and the horrendous destruction that followed in the ensuing years. In July 1983, the world witnessed a merciless assault on innocent Tamil civilians, (in retaliation for the death of 13 soldiers, killed in the North by extremists), that was orchestrated and ruthlessly implemented by gangs of misguided thugs of irresponsible politicians: barbaric acts of cowardice, that had their inevitable long term consequences, that we have all experienced, and some of us have been fortunate to survive. The shame of those acts will unquestionably haunt our beautiful country forever: and yet, through it all, there were also heart rendering acts of kindness and courage from many civic minded Sinhalese, who rose to protect their Tamil friends, at great risk to their own lives. I was one such beneficiary, as the Sinhalese members of the Tamil Union cricket team of 1983, moved into live in our family home in Bambalapitiya, and left only when they were certain that the threat to us had totally receded. In that group of eight, three were outstanding cricketers from the South, and to each of them, my family and I remain forever indebted.

The way we were.. contd
By s Skandakumar

The nation is now at the crossroads, where, His Excellency, the President, having inherited the consequences of the actions of his predecessors, has successfully brought a needless and yet, brutal war, spanning over 26-years , leaving behind a trail of untold suffering, death and destruction, to its termination. Immediately threafter, His Excellency inspired confidence, in his repeated addresses to the nation, by speaking in Tamil as well, conveying with sincerity, his genuine desire to unite the country. Moreover, he also stressed that, it was mandatory to respect the Constitution, and to be mindful of the need to establish Good Governance and the Rule Of Law. With such Statesmanlike assurances from the head of our nation, genuine Peace, has never had a greater chance, as it has now, though the healing process will take its time.
Although a practising Hindu, I have also read with great interest, Lord Buddhas teachings. In a predominantly Buddhist country, let those priceless pronouncements be the guiding light, on the path that we will all have to travel, to unite our nation, conscious that, there are wounds on both sides, that may, probably, never heal.
Perhaps, each of us, genuinely committed to that goal, could take a quote from the sayings of Mahatma Ghandi, ...”LET ME BE THE CHANGE I WANT THE WORLD TO BE”, and allow our CONSCIENCE dictate our actions, so we may go back to “The Way We Were”. GOD BLESS SRI LANKA

I was sceptic about MD's colonsiation idea at first. (I mean about 3-4 months ago). what I see and hear now has convinced me beyond doubt any other action other than making the north and east representative of all communities will solve the issue for good.

Bruce Fein and Boyle are now advicing the ealamsist of avenues of segregating the country (see tamilnet). Except for Quebec in Canada and Tamilnadu in India there are no other areas that are 'ear marked' for a community. There too anyone of any community can freely settle without been labled as colonisation.

It is the right of every person to live anywhere in the country. Giving incentives to settle in less populated areas is not colononisation and it happens all over the world.

Seems that Max Jackass hasn't figured out that most of the above Tamils already live in SL.

Dr. Muttukrishna Sarvanandan had exposed the LTTE's tsunami's scam and had debunked Eelamoids' claims of separate state and genocide:

In Pursuit of a Mythical State of Tamil Eelam: posted on the MOD website

M.I.A. and the bogey of genocide in Sri Lanka: posted on the SL Mission to the UN website

Bhavani Loganathan is the widow of Kethesh Loganathan, the deputy head of the SL Peace Secretariat who was murdered by the LTTE in 2006. Here is an eulogy by Amb. Dayan Jayatilleke mourning the loss of his old friend.

Hmm.. what has Max Jackass done to oppose the LTTE the way that Sarvanandan and Loganathan have done?

Ian,

The word “COLONISATION” is not applicable to Sri Lanka. We should not use it. Sinhalese, Tamils and Muslims lived together for centuries with other communities. It must continue.

The correct word to use is “ETHNIC INTEGRATION” and its true meaning has to be implemented with 100% sincerity. Long lasting peace will come from that.

Each and every Sri Lankan should be free to live anywhere anytime without fear or anxiety.

Rana said...

Further on the same issue:

The best way to eradicate mistrust, suspicion and racial hatred is to live together and interact with each and every one of the community you are living with.

Our country’s majority population is based on village system which has multi racial and religious participation to a varying degree from village to village. Some villages got Sinhalese as the majority and others got Tamils or Muslims as majority. Nothing is wrong with that. Let us continue the same trend in north and east too.

Sinhala people should go into north and east and help Tamil and Muslims to rebuild their lives.

"

Looks like Mushe-headed Mushe Dyan also has done it again- made an ASS out of himself.

Here are some key statements from the UTHR report about the SLA and the LTTE. It carries the widest description of what happened in those last days of battle:

Our examination of events suggests that by normal military standards, the soldiers in close encounters behaved exemplarily towards civilians.

Escapees, who were closer to the western edge of the strip, positively discounted the Army using a human shield to move in. Their experience was that LTTE cadres who withdrew from the bund moved into bunkers the civilians had built to protect their families from shelling and aerial bombardment, and started fighting the Army from these. The civilians scolded them and virtually chased them away. They also said that the second line of soldiers advancing directed the civilians out of the zone and helped them across, before resuming their advance. Deaths in their sector, they said, were mainly due to people peeping out from cover while the fighting was on and getting shot or from LTTE fire as civilians escaped towards army lines.

Soldiers who entered the No Fire Zone on 19th April 2009 and again on the 9th and 15th May acted with considerable credit when they reached the proximity of civilians. They took risks to protect civilians and helped across the elderly who could not walk. Those who escaped have readily acknowledged this.

Although the conditions in the so-called welfare centres where the displaced are housed amount to imprisonment without charges, as far as we could make out, allegations of sexual abuse of women refugees by the security forces does not represent the general atmosphere in the centres and cannot be substantiated. The bodies of dead persons, mainly elderly women, found abandoned near a bathing place were part of the confusion and neglect of the elderly at the initial stages and we are assured that such problems are being rectified.

Until mid May at least, girls and boys who had been in the LTTE were taken away. But this was after a public announcement for them to register, and it was done decently and the ex-cadres were taken to rehabilitation camps. Some who went to rehabilitation camps were told by inmates of some others in the camp who came to the rehabilitation camps because they had been involved in crimes like shooting parents who resisted the conscription of their children and are afraid to stay with the civilians.

wijayapala said...

In the context of present war which took a heavy toll on the lives of soldiers, these ordinary men have shown remarkable restraint towards civilians when they come to contact with them. The civilians are uniformly scathing about the LTTE, and frequently found the Army helpful and considerate. So far we know of no major discrepancy in the civilian population before the fall of Killinochchi and after the war’s end. The population before was estimated at 300 to 350 thousand. Presently nearly 300 000 are accounted for in IDP camps. It would be some time before all are registered and detailed checks could be made. There is no evidence of genocide. It is hard to identify any other Army that would have endured the provocations of the LTTE, which was angling for genocide, and caused proportionately little harm.

From a previous report:

As they reached the front-line of the military, they had been received courteously and given a meal and drinks. Since the civilians had been in fear and hunger for long they had delved into the food and in the end there was not enough food. One older military officer, who was announcing in crude Tamil over the speakers tied high up on the palmyrah trees, gave his own food parcel to a refugee and went without a meal him-self. This particular officer was shown on television (Eye Channel) making the announcement over the speakers, and the lady pointed him out as a very good and kindly man and related this story.

There are many grateful testimonies from IDPs of how military personnel put them-selves at great risk in checking and taking them in as they came in groups to the front-lines and surrendered to the military. There are reports of many instances where when the checking process had begun, a group of militants had appeared, and taking cover behind the trees, started shooting, and often killing some military personnel. The military have, by all reports, invariably taken cover, but avoided retaliating in order to protect the civilians from getting minced in the cross fire. Invariably in all such instances the civilians had felt desperately sure that even if they survived the cross fire, they would become victims to angry revenge killings. After the shooting subsided and the militants withdrew, they had invariably been received well. In one particular instance in early February 2009, a female suicide bomber had arrived at the front-line with a group of refugees and exploded her-self while being checked in, killing about four military personnel
.

Magaleshwary Sivapackiam.

Dear Fellow Srilankans who were called Tamils earlier.

I am also on of them and returned from the Killinochchi area via an IDP camp.I must first thank the Armed forces of Srilanka for the super operation they executed in style.

What all the world must know is what they do not know as yet. NGO’s shady activity NGO;s and Aid giving organisers are keen to be here in Srilanka Why??

SLMM what were they here for nobody knows! only we know. please read on. These rich foreign bodies come to Srilanka on the pretext of helping the afflicted. What do they do.? They recruit the village lasses and entrust them with a so called training which is outings of a day at a time where they are exposed to team games.

These games are well planned and the foreigner gets a chance to get close, touch(unsuspectingly) win the confidence of the girls. He bocomes a good boss to them. Then the girls are sent in batches of 02 or 03 the most, to the remote villages by a LuxuryJeep. For most this is 1st time and they are over the moon.

This goes on for two to three weeks and during this time the girls get good pocket money while all meals are provided. Most of these girls have never worn a brassier and they dont know what a sanitary napking is. This is the plight of these innocent girls. Critical point Thereafter these trips require an overnight stop over.

Thats where it begins. The foreigner buys them brasssiers gets them to try it out in their presence. They also show how a loopless pad is used. A bon fire gathering is held with the foreigners in attendence some cosy moments are spent. More money is thrown at the unsuspecting girls.

After gaining the girls fullest confidence and getting so close to them, hugs begin then grabbing and fondling with little or no resistance from the girls. All in all this is a patient game. During this time the Millitants enjoy the NGO/aid organisations patronage whereby Military Hardware, Supplies and Medicines are obtained as donations.

This prevents any complaints being entertained by the Militants from parents of the girls etc.. Now the foreigners move in and speak of Calenders and Posters etc and start photographing the girls in different attire. Then a partial revealing photo session. Finally all this ends up with a photo session with nothing on but bere human skin.

In the process advances are made nude baths in waterways are done and the girls end up as the playmates of the foreigners and sometimes their stooges.Their are cases of pregnancys and this usually ends up in crude abortions or death by suicide. Loss of their precious treasure

These girls are so conservative that once they are violated they feel their life is over and will not face their parents or their kith & kin. They will try to hang on to the foreigners. Alas the foreigners believe in replenishing the old stocks and another batch is trained. So the used ones are discarded.

Zooming in This an opportunity for they Militants. A mentally deranged young lass is easy to convince and brain washing goes through without a fuss. Now these once innocent virgins since violated and manhandled in the crudest forms of sexual actions are ready to carry the ball bearing filled explosives in their under garments to a predertimed target.

The suicide cadre is born Conclusion So my friends and relations you will see how the so called freedom fighters offer human sacrifices to the fair skins and then prowl around till the victim is mentally pressurised, to use her for their destructive actions on the pretext of fighting a cause.

[ 'Prabhakaran was tortured before being killed'

ExpressBuzz.com
June 11, 2009

NEW DELHI: Tamil Tigers leader Velupillai Prabhakaran was tortured by the Sri Lankan military before being killed, a leading human rights body said in a report released Wednesday.

The University Teachers for Human Rights (UTHR) quoted high-level military sources as saying that Prabhakaran was tortured in the presence of "a Tamil government politician and a general".

The torture, it said, took place probably at the headquarters of the army's 53 Division, which battled the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) before crushing it last month.

"Several army sources have said that Prabhakaran's (younger) 12-year-old son Balachandran was killed after capture. Our (sources) said that he was killed in front of his father," said UTHR, which has always been critical of excesses both by the military and the LTTE.

"These sources added that this information is correct unless officers at the highest level are fibbing to one another.

"Our sources in addition to several others have said that all the LTTE persons remaining in the NFZ (No Fire Zone) were massacred," it added in a 48-page report, an advance copy of which was made available to IANS.

Sri Lanka announced May 18 that Prabhakaran, founder leader of the LTTE, was killed in a lonely coastal stretch in the northeastern district of Mullaitivu where the Tigers had massed their forces before going down.

His body was put on display, placed on a stretcher, the back of the head blown off.

Sri Lankan minister Vinayagamurthy Muralitharan alias Karuna, a former confidant of Prabhakaran, had told IANS that the LTTE chief was shot dead with 18 of his guards.

Prabhakaran's death marked the end of the LTTE's dragging conflict that claimed 90,000 lives since 1983.

UTHR said: "Information seeping into the public domain from within the army points to capture or surrender, but the official responses dismissing this are a rehash of stories that public no longer finds credible. It is left to an impartial enquiry to answer this and related questions."

UTHR pointed out that the government was evasive about the fate of Prabhakaran's wife Mathivathani.

It quotes a brigadier as saying: "We had to look for Prabhakaran's body because the world was interested in seeing it. But the body of his wife is not of any importance to us."

The UTHR report said: "That would be the fate of the unknown hundreds of civilians and militants killed in those last days (of fighting)."

According to the report, among the LTTE leaders who surrendered to the army included Baby Subramaniam, a member of the group since 1976 and one of Prabhakaran's oldest associates.

Others reportedly now in government custody included former eastern province political leader Karikalan, former spokesman Yogaratnam Yogi, former head of the LTTE international secretariat Lawrence Thilakar, political advisor V. Balakumar, Jaffna leader Ilamparithi and Trincomalee political leader Elilan. ]

Some thoughts;

A proper ethnic integration is not creating a Sinhala only village adjutant to Tamil only villages as we have done in the past. It should be done in such a way to facilitate interactions between different ethnic communities.
There are two different ways to launch and introduce ethnic integration to communities:

1. Integration into the existing social, economic and political system of the majority of the population: This is the easy way of integration as it has been quite familiar to the majority but highest possible resistance may come from minor communities.

2. Integration by changing the current social and economic system under use of the existing political and legal regulations. The possibility of a new constitution offers a number of chances to improve the political, economic and social situation of all ethnic communities. Legal changes to eradicate caste systems and other social barriers must be there. A promising way to approach integration but takes time and difficult to implement.

Sri Lanka may need a mix of both ways to ensure following post war systems and order in settlements:

Governance:
Some system of responsibility for regulating behaviour in terms of avoiding all forms of racial conflicts and victimisation should be in place as a common law to all settlements. A new order following war cannot be based on perceived injustice or repression, and principles of justice have to be embodied into the post-war settlements.

Assimilation:
With links to aforesaid legitimacy to create clearly defined gains for living within an integrated community is rewarded than the potential advantages of seeking to destroy it.

Deterrence:
Victors should create a coalition strong enough to deter defection, by force if necessary, to protect settlement norms, or change them by peaceful means.

Conflict Resolution:
Conflict resolution procedures, systems and institutions should be in place for monitoring, identifying, managing and resolving conflicts between settlement members.

If large scale ethnic integration is to be launched in a proper way, it will be successful to great extent.

Patritots

Our gallant security forces finished their job and decimated the LTTE terror network from Sri Lanka. Now it is Sri Lankan ex-patriot’s duty to decimate the Die-Ass- Parayas terror network overseas. One of the things we have to do is to keep monitoring these overseas Tamil Tiger Terrorist networks, identifying the Die-Ass-Paraya Tamil Elam Terror Merchants(Sri Lankan, Indian and the White Tigers) and relaying the identities to Sri Lanka so that they can never enter our mother land (just like what we did to Bob Rae, the Tiger mouth piece). Tamil tiger Die-Ass- Parayas…. It is time to meet your Leader, the Vesa Pillai Parayah Dog in the dungeons of doom.

Kevin

Are you worried about a half a million Sri Lankan Army? It might not be enough. LTTE was only a small but important Part of the Tamil Elam Terrorist’s Grand Plan. Tamil Elam means Tamil Lanka. Does that ring a bell? The overall plan is for the Tamils of Tamil Nadu and the Die-ASS-Parayas spread all over the world to grab Sri Lanka, ethnically cleanse it from the Sinhalese and other minorities and make it their first Tamil Kingdom before breaking Tamil Nadu from India and creating a greater Tamil Elam. Sarath Fonseka recognized it right away and we have to give him our full support with our blood, sweat tears and money to decimate the sinister Tamil Terrorist Plan .

It is time for Genuine Sri Lakans to organize ourselves to face the next Tamil Terrorist Die-Ass-PAraya challange

Your calculation may be mathematically correct, but it doesn't take into account Risk factors which require premium to justify. If you are looking at investment purely from a sri Lankan perspective, that is difficult to visualize.

But for those who are looking at SL for investment, there needs to be an attractive rate of return to compensate for various forms of risk; political, exchange rate, inflation rate etc.

Still, SL is a very attractive investment opportunity and the trick is in buying into a well diversified poerfolio of stocks, bonds and short term investments.

rana,

fully agree.

BUT those should NEVER be allowed to be constraints in the process.

what is MOST important is NOT actual integration of ppl which is upto the ppl to do and a government cannot force it, but CHANGING the monoethnic tamil only nature of the north. actual integration may take a LONG time.

for that to happen, first there should be ppl. this is what i'm after.

while interactions are a MUST in the long run. it is not a MUST to start with.

also even if there is little interaction, no problem.

e.g. colombo.

in colombo there are hundreds of thousands of tamils who DON'T much interact with sinhalas or muslims especially housewifes, children, old ppl, etc. not bcos they don't want to but there is no need.

no problem whatsoever.

of course it is BEST if ppl intersct, not interacting is NO BAR to physical ethnic integration.

previous "colonisation" schemes have worked fantastically well by NOW despite LTTE terror attacks and AT THE VERY LEAST we should have that. ask those ppl whether they want to leave these areas and go. they would say NO. they are doing better than elsewhere. thats it.

Moshe Dyan said...

do what tamil elamists would call COLONISATION first and then lets look at improvements.

security is already there and providing basic needs for the ppl has been an essential part of the process. no change required.

I LOVE THIS STORY! It captures EVERYTHING.

I ran to relate it to my wife, and we rolled around laughing until our bellies ached and we could laugh no more!

AND, it captures the value of ETHNIC INTEGRATION very well...that we mix salivas into the tea until NO ONE COMMUNITY can say it belongs ONLY to ITSELF. The SALIVA is FROM everybody...so either DRINK it or THROW it away!

New Road to Eelam?

By Gomin Dayasri

The Oslo Declaration was greeted by the UNP as a major triumph in their negotiating process while the critics argued against it as a stepping stone to a separate state.
It is worth while harking back to the approved text of the Royal Norwegian government outlining the basic proposal which was hailed by the UNP government as jettisoning the Eelam concept-

“The parties agreed to explore a solution founded on the principle of internal self determination in areas of historical Tamil habitation of the Tamil speaking peoples based on a federal structure within a federal framework within a united Sri Lanka.”

Sri Lanka delegation to Oslo talks consisted of G.L.Peiris, Milinda Molegoda, Rauff Hakeem and Bernard Goonetilleke. LTTE was represented by Anton Balasingham, Adele Balasingham, Jay Maheswaran and R.Rudrakumaran.

Looking back at the text it is frightening and if implemented would have placed Sri Lanka in peril. It recognizes the (a) concept of internal self determination and (b) such internal self determination in areas of historical Tamil habitation.

It was agreed at a time when Sri Lanka had merged the provinces of North and East which were depicted to constitute Eelam on the maps of the LTTE. Yet the term ‘historical Tamil habitation of the Tamil speaking people’ can be extended to mean the tea country in the hills to form a homeland of the Tamil speaking people.

The Oslo Declaration did in fact extend the borders of Eelam reaching beyond the North and East.

Furthermore it introduced dissolution of the unitary state to be replaced with a federal constitution. Envisaged within a federal constitution was the creation of internal self determining unit for the Tamil speaking people on a vague historical concept.

Indeed crafty word play by the Norwegians which escaped our delegation and the UNP government which went overboard with the sight of the word ‘Federal’. Fortunately, Prabhakaran disassociated himself with the text and the local patriotic forces were sufficiently enlightened to highlight the impending dangers.

We never came closer to establishing Eelam and yet Ranil Wickremasinghe determined it as a historic victory. The belief that undermined our inner strength was the bloated image of the LTTE war machine and a view of a war incapable of being won. Naturally the chicken hearted saw in the 2002 December Oslo Declaration as a golden egg with the yoke of peace.

The state of mind is best reflected in the transcript at the press conference at the Peace Talks at Sattahip Thailand in September 2002 where G.L.Peiris in the presence of Anton Balasingham asserted:

“Well all I would like to say is that the overwhelming majority of people in the country are solidly behind peace. There cannot be any question about it. Across the political divide there is a deep desire for peace…..The country does not believe in war. This war has gone on for 18 years; we can see the destruction that has been caused by the war. And today the country is deeply committed to a political process and there is a profound conviction that is the only key to a viable solution”.

It was not a winnable war so the process of appeasement was to grant the maximum and leave the rest to history.

In 2009 in retrospect such a bounty on a platter is virtually unthinkable. It is the reason for those in the West, the Diaspora, the NGO community, and the Colombians to counter by attempting to degrade the victories on the war front by raising the issues of humanitarian violations, war crimes and the plight of the Internally Displaced People (IDPs) to achieve through a political solution what was not reachable in their war or peace exercises.

LTTE and their local and foreign coterie lost on both fronts - in war efforts and peace negotiations. The final resting place is in the forum of political solutions; to which they will next turn their attention. So must others.

The political solution must be to attend to the grievances of the minorities and not to confer more power to minority politicians by which the ordinary people do not gain any or sufficient benefits.

The grievances of economic social and cultural nature which are the pressing demands include the hardships faced by children can be fast tracked only by the central government. IDPs must be given better facilities and be resettled in their homes swiftly. This again is the province of the central government and beyond the reach of the peripheral outfits.

These are the priority issues which need immediate remedial measures. The IDPs is the show piece for foreign interventionists. It is the make or break issue for Sri Lanka with foreign aid and the attending NGO personnel. The country could be held to ransom and it must be handled delicately to safeguard the image of the country and win the hearts of the displaced people.

The soundings have already being made by some Government MPs partial to a federal framework leaning on an extensive devolution pattern which could lead to secession. Among them are those left leaning internationalists and some recent crossovers from the UNP and those inclined to federal solutions.

In the opposition in parliament there are stalwarts still under the influence of western embassies and NGOs propagating the federal formulas under deceptive captions.

Both in the government and the opposition the bedrock is supportive of a country that will be never be placed on the road to secession.

It is because the People voted for Mahinda Rajapaksa as President and for his Unitary State platform on which he stood; and he utilized his presidential powers to defeat the LTTE comprehensively, that we are blessed not to be in the hands of Norwegians reading out the text of the Oslo declaration.

The decision again is with the People. Vote for any Party of your choice for any Candidate of your choice but for candidates who stand firmly for a unitary state and not yield an inch to separatism, peacefully or otherwise. In a nutshell, vote to retain the glory achieved by our Forces with blood sweat and toil to eliminate terrorism without any revival of a movement towards the creation of two states. again

The value of the vote is two fold. It will bring to parliament from the government and the opposition, the patriotic members to the forefront, who will not stoop to sell the country with local and foreign internationalists. It will silence those politicians who seek to divide the nation. Afraid of the voter-as patriotic voters irrespective of politics- constitute the majority in both the main parties, such loose talk will soon fade away.

There could also be those who will try to win the minorities with sweet talk on IDPs and win the majority bashing the 13th amendment comprehensively. That blend will win only a handful of supporters.

[BJP questions Karunanidhi’s call for autonomy]

ExpressBuzz.com
June 11, 2009

CHENNAI: The BJP on Wednesday slammed Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi for his call for autonomy that he had made immediately after the recent Lok Sabha elections.

“Why has he chosen this time for a call for autonomy? Is it out of the frustration that the regional parties did not get a major say in the government formation after the recent polls? Or is it because of the DMK’s ploy to rake up the emotional issue as part of their plan to leave the alliance with the Congress before the 2011 Assembly elections?” asked La Ganesan, BJP State president.

Ganesan said BJP had always sought more powers for the State. “Asking for more powers is different from the call for autonomy,” he said.

The State unit of BJP and Janata Party have planned intense political campaign jointly on the Hindutuva and development planks in the State.

Announcing their decision, Ganesan and Janata Party leader Dr Subramanian Swamy told reporters that based on the two parties’ commitment to nationalism, good governance, economic development and national security, it was felt that the process of consolidation of patriotic forces should begin by effecting a long-term alliance between the parties in the State.

Ganesan said that the joint campaign would not be against any religion nor for the creation of a theological State.

Team to visit Lankan camps

BJP State unit would urge the party high command to send a delegation to Sri Lanka to look into the reports of human rights violations of ethnic Tamils and the situation prevailing in the relief camps in Sri Lanka. State BJP president La Ganesan said that he would present his suggestion to senior BJP leader L K Advani at the national executive meeting, which will be held next month.

[DMK attacks UPA over Lankan Tamils issue}

ExpressBuzz.com
June 10, 2009

CHENNAI: In a belated realisation, the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) on Tuesday charged the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government of remaining a mere spectator when Tamils were being killed in Sri Lanka and that the Centre had failed to strongly condemn the Lankan government to protect the innocent Tamils.

“At least now, this government should come forward to help the Tamils. Indian government should take all efforts to extend all possible assistance to rehabilitate the Lankan Tamils who have lost their belongings due to the war,” DMK MP and organising secretary of the party, T K S Elangovan said in his maiden speech in the Lok Sabha.

Speaking on the motion of thanks to the President’s address, Elangovan observed that after the massacre of Jews by Hitler’s army in 1940s, thousands of Tamils who were residing in ‘no war zone’ were killed by Lankan Army.

“What had happened to us? The entire world remained a spectator to this atrocity… particularly, India, boasting itself of nurturing unity in diversity and taking pride in giving room for various cultures, languages and religions, also remained a spectator,” Elangovan pointed out.

On Sethusamudram project, Elangovan said some vested interests were trying to scuttle the implementation of the project by raising suspicions.

They were trying to stop the project keeping in mind the interests of somebody else, he said and urged the Centre to reiterate its commitment on the project.

Sri Lanka Targets Tamil Tigers' Overseas Support Network

By Peter Wonacott
[WallStreetJournal, Colombo]
June 11, 2009

After routing the Tamil Tigers at home, the Sri Lankan government has set its sights on destroying the group's network overseas -- an effort that involves working closely with countries that were critical of Sri Lanka's tough tactics during the war.

In recent weeks, Sri Lankan officials have been sifting through computer files, business cards and daily schedules taken from Tamil Tiger offices in the country's north during this year's military offensive. The intelligence haul, officials say, is helping pinpoint sources of financial support and weapons that flowed to the separatist rebels from overseas.

That supply network appears in some disarray after Tiger leaders in Sri Lanka, including chief Velupillai Prabhakaran, were killed, say two Sri Lankan officials involved in the investigations. Now, top members of the Tamil diaspora are jockeying to take the reins of the movement, the officials say. "Everything will be focused on the international arena," said one Ministry of Defense official. "They are losing control of their activities."

Sri Lanka's civil war -- fought off and on since 1983 -- threatened to split the country along ethnic lines. The Tigers, purporting to represent Sri Lanka's mostly Hindu Tamils, battled for a separate state against the government, which is largely Sinhalese and Buddhist. Money and arms from the diaspora sustained the 26-year conflict.

The U.S. and other countries have labeled the Tamil Tigers a foreign terrorist organization for a raft of suicide bombings and political assassinations.

Sri Lanka's bid to dismantle the Tigers' overseas network got a boost Tuesday, as four people pleaded guilty to providing material support to the Tamil Tigers, among other crimes, in a Brooklyn, N.Y., court, according to a statement from the U.S. Department of Justice.

The defendants include the head of the Tigers' U.S. operations, Karunakaran Kandasamy. Federal prosecutors say Mr. Kandasamy supervised fund raising and laundered donations through an international charity front called the Tamils Rehabilitation Organization. In 2007, the U.S. Department of the Treasury designated the Tamils Rehabilitation Organization "a front to facilitate fund raising and procurement" for the Tigers. Mr. Kandasamy faces up to 20 years in prison, the Justice Department statement said.

Mr. Kandasamy "has accepted responsibility for his actions," defense attorney Charles A. Ross said Wednesday. Mr. Ross expressed hope his client would receive "a fair and merciful sentence," given Mr. Kandasamy's poor health.

The global scope of the investigation, from Hindu temples in Europe to charities in North America, shows the Tigers rival the complexity of prominent Islamic terror groups.

But officials of the tiny island nation face formidable obstacles as they attempt to sift through illicit and legitimate activities of 1.2 million Tamils living outside Sri Lanka. Some analysts say the Sri Lankan government doesn't have the manpower and diplomatic muscle to track Tamil Tigers and persuade other countries to make arrests, unlike the U.S. in its hunt for al Qaeda operatives.

"There has been a lack of resources and lack of understanding of the network," says Shanaka Jayasekara, an expert on the Tamil Tigers at Macquarie University's Centre for Policing, Intelligence and Counterterrorism in Sydney. "It's extremely difficult to know how it operates."

Sri Lanka Targets Tamil Tigers' Overseas Support Network

...continued...

At the same time, Sri Lanka must overcome strained ties with some powerful allies. The U.K. is calling for investigations into possible war crimes by the Sri Lanka military after heavy civilian casualties during the civil war. The U.S. has expressed reservations about Sri Lanka receiving an emergency loan from the International Monetary Fund.

The Sri Lankan government has rebuffed proposed inquiries into the military's conduct, and has turned to countries less critical of its human-rights record -- such as Iran and China -- for financial help.

Sri Lanka officials say that for the past decade, Europe -- particularly France and the U.K. -- has been a base for Tiger fund raising and propaganda. The Sri Lankan government recently asked members of the European Union to scrutinize financial statements from offices of the Tamils Rehabilitation Organization to verify whether funds the group said it raised for tsunami relief actually went to victims.

In 2007, French antiterrorist police agents detained 17 people in Paris and neighboring areas suspected of funneling cash to the Tamil Tiger rebels. Sri Lankan officials are also monitoring satellite television programs that they believe help the Tamil diaspora raise money and enlist support of human-rights activists, who in turn put pressure on the government in Colombo.

A number of such satellite channels have been set up -- and abruptly shut down -- in countries including France and Serbia, according to a Sri Lankan government report. A Sri Lankan official says the Tamil Tigers were able to access satellite links to broadcast from Paris. Intelsat Ltd., a satellite-service provider, said in a 2007 statement that the Tigers used one of its satellites without permission before the company said it acted to halt transmissions.

Tuesday's guilty pleas in the U.S. offer a glimpse of the Tigers' alleged foreign support. One defendant was involved in global procurement of improvised explosive devices, missiles, machine guns and radar, according to the statement from the Department of Justice. He and another defendant also tried to bribe "purported U.S. State Department officials" to remove the Tamil Tigers from the list of foreign terrorist organizations, the statement said.

Sri Lankan officials are pressing Interpol, the international police organization, and countries in Southeast Asia to help locate and arrest a Sri Lankan fugitive known as Kumaran Pathmanathan, or KP. In January, the Tamil Tigers appointed KP head of their international operations.

After Mr. Prabhakaran's death last month, KP has emerged as a spokesman for the separatist movement. The 54-year old businessman is already wanted by Interpol for crimes involving weapons, explosives and terrorism, according to a notice on its Web site.

Wijayapala said about Max Jackass,

Hey! you are no Wijayapala but a Kona(ka)pala. I do not think you belong to that category, too.

You are a Peelam Sakkiliya throwing puke (vomit) around in disgust, knowing that Lions have really done the back-end job on Tigers and Tigresses. I do not want to go into gory details.

I am talking about 1989 - 92. Nesiah family are well known LTTE supporters. Chandrika's LTTE adviser - Ram Manikkalingam - was a two timer from Boston, MA, who was close to Vasuki Nesiah, then an undergraduate at Cornell U. She was the main organizer for LTTE thinking at Cornell. They held conferences and I have attended those myself whilst working in upstate NY. I have some other information that could shed more light on traitors in Sri Lanka, working "hand and glove" with Peelamist in the US. I have already informed powers to be.

This time around, I will keep a close tab on my best friend even if he is a Tamil; even if he is a Sinhalese friendly with a Tamil.

We living Sinhalese have to safeguard our motherland for ourselves and other communities because we owe a massive debt to those people who paid the supreme sacrifice to keep Sri Lanka as one country.

Wijyapala, if you are still two timing in Sri Lanka, your days are numbered brother. I will expose you and appeal to GOSL to give you "Rae" treatment. That's my way of paying back dues.

If you are residing outside Sri Lanka, do get a life soon.

Patriots,

The last line of this article to wit "unlikely to be a substantial reduction in anti-Tamil discrimination at national level" is what we must FOCUS ON in the coming months and years to DEMOLISH and ERADICATE as a TRUISM from the minds and writings of news media journalists.

This OFT-REPEATED mantra that there is intolerable institutionalized discrimination against Tamils in Sri Lanka was THE BASIS for the EELAMISTS drive for international support. We KNOW it is SIMPLY UNTRUE...and therefore, we MUST CONTEST AND DEMOLISH THESE STATEMENTS everywhere we encounter them...starting RIGHT NOW.

Where next for Sri Lanka's Tamils?: The uncertain future of Tamils in Sri Lanka

[Economist.com]
June 10, 2009

With the government's defeat of the rebel Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE, or Tamil Tigers) and the end of the civil war, attention in Sri Lanka is turning to the future. Beyond the need for economic development in former war zones, and humanitarian support for civilians displaced by the conflict, the peacetime political role of the country's large Tamil minority is of key importance. Devolving powers to the provinces may go some way toward addressing Tamil grievances, though separatist violence—albeit on a much smaller scale than during the war—will remain a threat.

The major surprise in the last stage of the Sri Lankan army's campaign against the LTTE, in mid-May, was its unexpected success in wiping out virtually the entirety of the rebel group's leadership. The credibility of the government's declaration of victory on May 19th was strengthened by the death of the rebel leader, Velupillai Prabhakaran, in the final bout of fighting. Although conflicting accounts of his death emerged, images of the corpse and identification by senior former Tamil rebels backed up the veracity of the claim. Apart from Prabhakaran, other senior LTTE leaders were also reportedly killed. They included the leader of the group's intelligence wing, Sivershankar Pottu Amman, the commander of its naval force, Thillaiyampalam Sivanesan (known as Soosai), and its political chief, Balasingham Nadesan. Prabhakaran's son and head of the rebels' small air force, Charles Anthony, was also killed in a separate encounter. The fact that so many in the senior leadership are dead, and that the LTTE has no land base left, suggests that the Tigers are finished as a political and military force.

Tamil separatism is nevertheless likely to continue as a movement, and other terrorist organisations may arise to take the LTTE's place. It is doubtful, however, that these will be able to tap the financial and organisational networks that were available to the LTTE, especially in the Tamil diaspora. Generational gaps and disillusionment with the Tigers had in any case been making it tougher for the rebels to generate the same level of support recently as in previous years; a new insurgency would find motivating donors even tougher.

Meanwhile, much of the stock of arms and ammunition available to the Tigers was lost in the recent war, so a new group would have to start from a poorly supplied base. If separatist incidents occur in the coming months, they are thus likely to be unsophisticated attacks—although they may still be bloody.

Where next for Sri Lanka's Tamils?: The uncertain future of Tamils in Sri Lanka

....continued....

With the prospects for the armed struggle looking poor, new attention is likely to turn to the political sphere. The government has ruled out allowing what remnants, if any, exist of the LTTE to return to the political mainstream. Still, despite the LTTE's past efforts to kill off moderate Tamils, the Tamil community is not lacking in political parties or leaders. Although these groups are fragmented, prominent individuals include Douglas Devananda, the social welfare minister and leader of the Eelam People's Democratic Party; and Veerasingham Anandasangaree, the head of the Tamil United Liberation Front. Both distanced themselves from the Tigers many years ago. Vinayagamoorthi Muralitharan (also known as Karuna), a former head of the Tamil Makkal Viduthalai Pulikal (TMVP) and now a member of the Sri Lanka Freedom Party (the main component of the ruling United People's Freedom Alliance government), may also become more prominent, although his main base of support is in the east. Before joining the political mainstream, Karuna had created the TMVP as a breakaway faction of the LTTE.

The government has already promised that elections will be held soon—in August, the latest reports indicate—for local authority positions in Jaffna and Vavuniya in the north, the first in a decade. It is possible that provincial elections could follow in the north, possibly in late 2010 or 2011. What is not yet clear is how much the government and security forces will interfere with the results. (Militants and thugs associated with Tamil political groups may also intimidate voters.) If the government actively discriminates against certain Tamil politicians, for example those associated with the Tamil National Alliance coalition (which won 22 seats in the 2004 general election but has been closely associated with the LTTE), the election result may lack legitimacy and underlying ethnic tensions may rise.

Moreover, despite the end of the civil war, resolving the grievances of the minority Tamil community will remain a major challenge for the government. The government's strategy is to address this problem by fuller implementation of existing measures that devolve power to the island's provinces. However, a lack of fiscal resources will limit funds available to the regions. In addition, the president, Mahinda Rajapakse, has a personality-centred style of leadership that does not seem suited to ceding power to provincial authorities. Many therefore doubt that devolution will occur in practice. Nevertheless, if the government can promote economic development in the east and north, this may help to lessen resentment in the wider Tamil community in the long term. But there is unlikely to be a substantial reduction in anti-Tamil discrimination at national level in 2009-10.

Sri Lanka's deportation of Canadian MP 'absurd': Ottawa

By Ananda-USA
June 11, 2009

We don't think it is absurd; we think it is high-time that enemies of Sri Lanka who want to interfere in the internal politics of the country, are summarily expelled; declared PERSONA-NON-GRATA in Sri Lanka.

Canada did the same in the past when it refused a visa for President De Gaulle of France who was stirring the communal pot among the French Canadians in the Quebec province of Canada. The Canadian Govt has conveniently forgotten how it feels like when foreigners attempt to exacerbate separatism in your own country. HYPOCRITES!

[Google.com], AFP, Ottawa
June 11, 2009

The Canadian government on Wednesday rebuked Sri Lanka for its refusal to allow a prominent Canadian MP into its country for allegedly supporting defeated Tamil Tiger rebels as "absurd."

Bob Rae, a Liberal member of parliament, former Ontario premier and outspoken critic of the Sri Lankan military's offensive against the rebels, was detained after flying into Colombo's Bandaranaike International Airport.

"He was put in the next available flight and sent back," an airport official told AFP.

In a statement, Canada's foreign affairs department said: "It is absurd to suggest that Mr. Rae represents a threat to Sri Lankan national security, or is a supporter of the LTTE."

"We have registered to the Sri Lankan government our dismay and displeasure concerning this unacceptable treatment of a Canadian parliamentarian," it added.

The ministry outlined that Rae had traveled to Sri Lanka on a "private visit with a valid visa issued by Sri Lankan authorities." Upon arriving, he was detained, "accused of being a national security threat" and refused entry.

Sri Lankan immigration chief P. B. Abeykoon said Rae was blacklisted over his alleged links to the separatist Tamil Tiger rebels, who were defeated last month after a massive military onslaught in the north of the island.

Rae had added his voice to widespread international condemnation of the offensive, which according to the United Nations left thousands of civilians dead in indiscriminate shelling.

In postings on his website, Rae had said he was planning to travel to the island's devastated northern Wanni region, where hundreds of thousands of Tamil civilians are being held under guard in government camps.

He said he wanted to press the Sri Lankan government to be magnanimous in victory.

The MP was involved in failed peace attempts in Sri Lanka following the February 2002 Norwegian-brokered truce between troops and Tamil Tigers, and worked on proposals to create a federal state as a means to peacefully end decades of ethnic bloodshed.

The peace process, however, collapsed 18 months ago with both the rebels and the Sri Lankan government choosing to return to war.

Can somebody shed some light on these photos?..coz my cousin showed me a mobile video clip of the same dead bodies and even more gorier scenes not shown of SLA troopers poking their T-56's into the dead bodies vaginas..

Is it possible that some of our soldiers who were engaged in the victory euphoria and after a few "shots" of gal arrack could have done these dirty deeds?.even the americans have done similar stuff-remember abu ghuraib in iraq?..

I dismissed the mobile video as a hoax or something done by the Tigers as propaganda but after seein the same photos I do wonder..victory is one thing but abusing of dead bodies whether it be of the worlds most horrible human even has to be condemned..

Beautifully Said, Mr. Gokhale!

Double standards of the West

By Nitin Gokhale
NDTV, New Delhi, India
Defence.lk
June 10, 2009

If ever there was a proof needed about the double standards applied by the Western nations in dealing with Asia and Africa, there is no better example than their reaction to the developments in Sri Lanka over the last fortnight.

Here's a nation that secured a hard-earned military victory over what was unarguably the world's most dreaded and ruthless terrorist group--the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam or LTTE. Banned in 26 countries across the globe, the Tamil Tigers, as the LTTE was also known, had a powerful naval arm, a rudimentary air wing and at least 25,000 infantry fighters backed like a conventional army with 155 mm artillery guns, multi-barrel rocket launchers, Universal machine guns and claymore mines among other small arms.

This was the outfit that gave the world the suicide vest and suicide belt that were responsible for the assassination of at least one President and a former Prime Minister across two nations, this was the group that killed and wounded at least 70,000 people over a quarter century; here was a group who's writ ran large over one-third of a sovereign nation.

And to top it all, the LTTE had kept over 250,000 innocent, hapless Tamil civilians--women, children, the young and the old--hostage for over two years and mercilessly used them as an insurance against the advancing Sri Lankan army.

If ever there was a ripe case for a well-planned and executed military operation, here it was in Sri Lanka. President Mahinda Rajapaksa and his team went about prosecuting what, by all accounts, was a legitimate war. But the world, the Western world went into an overdrive to stop Colombo. Norway, Sweden, UK and to a lesser extent the United States put pressure on Sri Lanka by various means. Some threatened to move a resolution in the UN, others lobbied to prevent a bailout package mooted by the International Monetary Fund for the war-ravaged country. Now, many have called for war crime investigations into the conduct of the Sri Lankan military.

Had it not been for countries like Russia, China and to an extent India, Sri Lanka would have suffered grievously at the hands of the so-called liberal lobby, ably aided and abetted by the 'bleeding-heart' liberals among the western media who think they are the judge, jury and executors when it comes to dealing with Asian and African nations. All of them had tried to stop the war in Sri Lanka, ostensibly to safeguard the civilians but in reality the efforts were directed at rescuing LTTE chief Vellupillai Prabhakaran and his top associates.

The simple and bitter truth is: the Western world has not been able to digest the fact that a small, underdeveloped nation like Sri Lanka has managed to defeat a terrorist group, a feat that they have not managed despite deploying huge resources and manpower across the globe.

Ananda-USA said...

....continued....

For years, the US and the NATO countries have been trying to vanquish the Al Qaeda and the Taliban, without much success. In the past decade, the US and other western militaries, operating in Iraq and Afghanistan to take just two recent examples, have killed and maimed scores of civilians. But except for cursory apologies, none of these nations or the defenders of human rights operating from the safe havens of western capitals have bothered to even acknowledge their gross mistakes.

So why is it that a small nation's victory over terrorism "fit to be tried for war crimes," but a big bully's (like the US) blatant violation of human rights is part of a "necessary war on terrorism?" Why didn't any one of these defenders of human rights put pressure on the LTTE when it was taking hundreds of thousands of civilians along with it as it retreated during the war?

If ever there is a clear case of the western nations' hypocrisy, it is demonstrable here in India's backyard, in Sri Lanka. Let Washington and London and Bonn and Ottawa first look at their own conduct before trying to prosecute a small country for doing what any sovereign nation has a right to do.

(The author, NDTV's Defence Editor, reported the war in Sri Lanka from the conflict zone for the past six months)

We must write UTHR(Jaffna) to be exact. Then a reader will understand better.

Sinhale
It’s good to have half a million now while this government in power should UNP gain power will they turn this military against it’s own people should the people in the country protest against another attempt to divide the country? During the JVP trouble the UNP under JVP emergency time acquired draconian powers for its MP to shoot anyone on sight which also gave the powers of a police ASP. Soon after one of their Kandy MPs held pistol in hand and led a mob along Colombo Street over a liquor licence and the wise people in Kandy voted him out. Like wise there are people in that camp willing to accept large sums abroad to let in these terrorists in using one disguise or other. Just think of the time after the SLFP government the state of the nation would be?
Labour guys in UK thought a year ago that they could walk on water hoping to stay in power and one can see their state now, will be defeated badly in the next election.
We must not worry about the TN faction for the moment as the murder of the Rajiv has given us some insurance besides the Central government under any political party will never allow the militants or any military unit there to be in the hands of the TN politicians as it would lead to disintegration of India besides people of Tamil Nadhu will not stand for it and they hate their politicians.
What we have to do is to get our infrastructure right; just as in Singapore and we can do it with the same determination that defeated the terrorists. We have to make sacrifices with respect to unnecessary privileges enjoyed by the few at the expense of the country.GOSL must deal with the issues that is affecting the well being of our daily lives in sl which I know is there as I too have a heavy investment or two is not doing well and simple urgent action is required. Investment of half a million is a heavy burden of the taxpayers and it’s like cracking a nut with a sledge hammer.
We have to learn from people who have similar situation to ours and who have succeeded in dealing with a similar situation.
Having connections with Singapore I could say that the 5 million people there are surrounded by over 170 million who might turn against them any day. First they sorted out their internal structure where saboteurs and infiltrations are strictly controlled where the simple police man to the top politician is warned against any type of corruption where the penalty could be death to a very long spell in prison. As for civilians a simple act of throwing a cigarette butt ends up in prison unlike our island the possibility of enemy infiltration and sabotage is high due to high level of corruption and lack of respect for the country’s law as some think that some are more equal than the others and this type of privileges enjoyed and sought will be the ultimate disaster to the island and the likes of VP is only a symptom and not the cause.

Yesterday soon after our gathering at the House of lords where our Lon.HC was there I rush down to my business for a dinner appointment with a couple of Singaporean business people where what they uttered that I made note of and I would share with our patriots.

They mentioned the incident where an American youth in Singapore was sentenced to jail and canning for a simple act of writing graffiti on walls where President Clinton intervened nevertheless the sentence was carried out claiming that anyone living or visiting Singapore has to abide by the laws of the country and US respected it and our island can’t claim the status as Singapore where people very close to power like Mervin Silva or the BOI and the Immigration using their powers just to evict people who are doing good work on flimsy, perhaps with a political motive are chased out.
When we have such double standards then they too will come out with double standards of their own. These are reasons they give when we try to explain our plight to them.
I am glad that terrorist supporter Bob Rae MP was banned entering which is in line with the norms practised in most countries.
So if we respect our own laws by everyone without an exception the world will respect us.
I have seen to my self at the road block in front of my house where the humble officials there were made to make exceptions to some cars where anyone in the vehicle would be a potential terrorist. I know a very powerful business man(jumping from one party to another)showing off his status and driving his expensive 4 wheel drive simply going up and down the street with a badge of an scared organization which is immune from scrutiny. People in authority should have distanced themselves from him for bringing disrepute to town and country by loans taken from ADB and being misused by him. What is to stop the terrorists using such people to create havoc in the country? So having half a million or 15 million will not solve anything. Just follow the painful steps to achieve another Singapore then to a status of Israel then there will be peace and respect for the country.

Nuclear,

UTHR was the original one: Rajan Hoole, Rajini Thiranagama and Daya Somasunderam started the original UTHR. Rajini Thiranagama was killed by the LTTE. They did a good job highlighting human rights abuses especially by the Indian Army during the IPKF reign in Jaffna.

Rajan Hoole came back a few years ago at the invitation of President MR to head Jaffna University but was chased out by the LTTE who threatened to kill him and his family.

I suspect UTHR(J) was created by a group of LTTE people who hijacked the UTHR name.

Rajan Hoole is an international academic and like many Tamils he is probably an eelam sympathizer. However, I can't imagine that he would write something so stupid

Narcotic Activity Thrives,

This is 100% reliable information on how over 90% of Heroin and other hard-drugs come to Sri Lanka.

They have adapted the same LTTE strategy of smuggling arms.

This is a huge organized operation which has the hands of LTTE (former), Colombo Underworld, number of businessmen, Police, and handful of Colombo Municipality Councilors, and few key politicians.

The narcotics are transferred from foreign trawlers to our local trawlers in mid-sea. Then they get hidden in specialized compartments made in trawlers and "Fish Boxes", and brought to shore. The narcotics are then transported into other areas of the island through fish-boxes in the guise of transporting fish.

Major part of these boxes come to Aluthkade fish market and then go to the intended hands. Some Police personnel attached to Aluthkade Fish market get rich thanks to avoiding eye -this is called "Es Kuliya" (Eye Fees).

Some Narcotic stocks come to Colombo from Mannar in Dried Fish bails. They go directly to intended Dried Fish wholesalers in Pettah. From there, they get distributed to other parts.

The President should amass a highly secretive anti-narcotic unit with at least 50-60 officers to dismantle this ring. This needs the support of the Navy and other intelligence too, and should work in secrecy for many months identifying all the individuals and dismantle it in grand-scale. Otherwise, they will organize again.

This network is huge because it is the largest narcotic smuggling route to Sri Lanka.

I have a bit more time before my staff pick another Stanger or two to have dinner with us.
Ananda and his mates must have my type of business to reach out to people in the world that you will never get a chance in the street and not even the country’s HC has that kind of closeness to the members of the public.

No ltte… To amuse you bit more let me say an incident or two that really tells so much about the country and its people.

1, My business partner and I was approached by a supposed to be a business man in London and knowing that we are in the present governing party brought a video of his daughter at her wedding in a 5 star hotel in Colombo where Mrs B had attended perhaps signed the registers as a witness also a still picture of Anura.B at his business place in London after this little show, trying to convince us in a bizarre way how important he is got a loan to develop his business further a sum of £20kWe gave him promptly not because of his connections(which is irrelevant) but because of he being a Sinhalese who is very rare in these parts who may match the diasspora.Soon after we lost all contact and folded his business and we are minus 20k with a egg on our face.
2,The powerful crooked business man in Kandy whom I mentioned in a previous presentation above came to my home in Kandy trying to flog a valuable bit of land in a prime area in Colombo and he too put up a show.
First he came in with two cps and one village cop and made sure he parked his Mercies 4 wheel drive in front of the building with lights flashing and with few more cops on perahara point duty giving further flavour to his show by standing guard to his 4 wheel vehicle and he made sure that me and my partner noticed it too and started talking about he selling this land with a promise of getting permission to have direct access to the harbour where by I could have a container yard etc My colleagues weren’t convinced that he really owns it or the government would ever allow access to the port.
Since he could not win us over he went to the second act by going in to another part of my house and made a call and the scene was set just outside mu home where couple of high ranking cops perhaps of the ranks ssps on Perhara duty were looking up into our balcony and when this guy dragged up to the balcony for us to see this guy waving at the cops below and in return they saluted back implying that he is a man of great influence in the country and we must buy his land. My people there says that he may have hood winked those guys with offer of favours just to act like clowns.
The moral of this story is once bitten twice shy, besides we are no nonsense business people we go by the hard facts of real business life but not his type of nonsense that is peddled around in the country and we are(in SL) so naive enough to be gullible and this is my fear for the country where the conniving terrorists make use of this weakness with their vast sums of money.
Sorry must break off as we got three more mugs for dinner. Bye!

Giving 20 k is a mistake and we have done similar stupid things in the past however the almighty or someone above has blessed us and we must share that with those who can’t be like us and it’s our pleasure. We never go on holidays anywhere else except to dear Lanka but go on brief business trips to Sing, Malaysia and Jap.We want to be with our people in the most humble surroundings in SL and it gives us great pleasure. I couldn’t read your question properly because of the distraction here with these people in my place. I don’t deliberately mix with con men and show me an honest business man in SL.Mates relative is Lilith whose parents we knew (Justin K, the senator) a person of high integrity and he must be turning in his grave after seeing what the son has done. Can’t blame his son as he is a victim of the awful conditions in the country where the victims are both the investor and the banker. I too fell for a scam in mid eighties where I lost millions to a company name stambo and stambo in moratuwa.
It is painful to say the trouble we are going through with our investments in SL where the blue chip companies are mucking us about with the rents etc. It’s corruption where the rental cheque sent from their HQ is kept hidden by the local manger for over a month expecting us to give him a bribe and this is true with the government and local government depts. as well. I should be minting money instead I have to pay the wages of my humble employee from UK.These mangers in the building get small jobs and errants done by these humble employee who are just cleaners and security and don’t they ever have a heartfor them when they don’t pay the rent that only goes for their wages? I don’t seek a red sent from that place and where have we lost our sense of charity and good nature? When kadiar died I was the only person who put a white flag in the town except for a good old Tamil class mate of mine. I couldn’t buy a whitecloth but use a white bed sheet from London and I was nearly arrested by an SSP who was on perahara duty who may have been in the pay roll of the terrorists. Due to a timely intervention of a good natured sub inspector we compromised by removing the big bed sheet with a much smaller pillow case. He said it was not appropriate because of the Poya day. That’s why religion is the opium of the masses and that’s why we don’t want more of the uniforms in our streets and now the war is over they should be back in their barracks or you will have a little Hitler in every corner in our towns and do we need that? I can tell you more but it’s painful/I too in my profession are in the law and order industry so is my sibling but we respect the public that pay our wages and we are accountable to the public and the law but not to the politicians so when one blame the West and should be aimed at the these conniving politicians not the majority of the people who wants the terrorists routed out of the island at any cost.

Before I get off I must say that the protestors have vanished from the Parliament SQ except for the guy sleeping inside a tent and police are ever ready to throw him out of that place awaiting a ruling. There was a sizeable crowed of top class Tamils at the House of Lords who seems to be in a conciliatory mood which was absent for over a decade. Getting rid of those terrorists has put some sense in to them. Looks like things may look good in future for us in the island now that the terrorists are off the backs of some of the Diaspora Tamils..

Below is a para from the above article.

/A few months ago, thanks to a newly appointed young Sri Lankan Teacher, a daughter of a friend of mine, I had had access to her friend, a mainstream Toronto Area Grade 9 Teacher whose preparatory lesson notes on Sri Lanka revealed the unimaginable. In brief, the teacher, depending on interviews with some parents of the Tamil students in her class (50% Tamil), had prepared the lesson for a 'Sri Lanka Day' in her class. As per her notes, "Sri Lanka is the habitat of the Tamil Nation, the home of the original Tamils. Over the years the Sinhalese becoming more powerful had occupied their nation and persecuted the Tamil people, especially after the country had become independent of the Great Britain which ruled it. Today, Tamils are being forced out of Sri Lanka! Thanks to countries like Canada, now the Tamils have a place to live. Tamils have come to Canada to avoid being killed! Killing the people of a nation or an ethnic group is called genocide!" Etc. /

Why do you think the Tamil Diaspora Teach thier kids such lies? I think they have the long term plan to make SL a Tamil Homeland (not just part of it ), and to justify it to the world. We have a bigger burden of protecting ourselves than just avoid seperatism. We have to educate our younger generations of these intentions and ,never to allow any kind of separatism to lift its head ever. It is not mere keeping our teritorial intergrity it is about our existence as well.

What do you expect? The whole tamilnation concept is based on lies and only lies. But we are at fault too.

Can you tell me a single book in simple langauge that gives the truth of the whole issue? Do the children of patriots know the history of the issue? If a non sri lanlan ask them what will they say?It will happen but only after the separatists have managed to make the wholeworld belive in their lies. There is no proper brefing or a book on the issue for our diplomats leaving alone the younger generation.

Good thing if we can do something about it.

the subject of post-war SLDFs was a hot topic.

well, it has been sorted out by now in OUR FAVOUR.

another BIG defeat for peaceful tamil elam whores.

main features.

1. SLA will be raised by a MASSIVE 100,000+

2. SLDF HQs already established in mula & kili.

we NEVER had SLDF HQs in these districts b4.

3. a MASSIVE number of new SLDF bases will be established in the north.

4."The Army was equipped with highly sophisticated military hardware that prominent armies in the world use for their military purposes."

5. "plans are underway to purchase ships and other military requirement for the Sri Lanka Navy"

6. "For Sri Lanka Air Force, the government has decided to accrue new aircraft"

7. a very powerful Chief of Defence Staff will be created from the present one which is more of an admin role.

8. some jokers thought the promotions given to tri-forcers commanders AFTER war was over was about THANKS GIVING!! what fools!!

it was according to a BROADER plan to beef-up the military in FUTURE.

9. my bet is SF will be appointed the new CDS????

increase in SLDF capabilities

"Sweeping powers for Chief of Defence Staff

Major reorganization of the military on the cards

At the end of the decades long war the Sri Lankan military has emerged as one of the most experienced and effective counter terrorism and counter insurgency outfits.

With the termination of the war, the government is keen to further strengthen and re-organize the armed forces to meet any situation that may arise in the future.

Approval has already been given to further increase the strength of the manpower and equipment of each the three forces as well as that of the Police. Recruitment drives are underway to enlist more youth to the forces.

The Sri Lanka Army, Navy, Air Force, Civil Defence Force and the Police played a key role to put a stop to LTTE terrorism.

During the last three years, the government provided everything that was needed to the forces despite the global financial crisis. The Army’s strength has been increased by 100,000 personnel within a short period. The Army was equipped with highly sophisticated military hardware that prominent armies in the world use for their military purposes.

Army Commander General Sarath Fonseka recently said that he expected to increase strength of the army from 200,000 to 300,000 especially as he had to deploy more and more soldiers to the new bases established in the liberated areas.

Soon after winning the war, President Mahinda Rajapkasa promoted the Commanders of the three forces to the next rank in recognition of their service to the nation by way of eliminating terrorism from the country. Accordingly he promoted Army Commander to General, Navy Commander to Admiral and Air Force Commander to Air Chief Marshal ranks. Significantly, this is the first time, serving Commanders in Sri Lanka have been thus promoted.

Likewise, plans are underway to purchase ships and other military requirement for the Sri Lanka Navy, which would have to play a major role in the future to protect Sri Lanka. With Sri Lanka poised to gain an extended exclusive economic zone in the sea aound the country more and more ships are to be deployed in deep sea operations. With the growing trend of smuggling and other illegal activities in deep seas such enhanced measures would be needed to protect the Sri Lankan waters in the future. Though the Sri Lanka navy has only a few deep sea operational ships with low capabilities, it is capable of carrying out deep sea military operations, as they have done earlier. But due to the growing security threat in the sea the government is planning to enhance the Navy’s capability by way of purchasing new ships.

For Sri Lanka Air Force, the government has decided to accrue new aircraft under the reorganization of the country’s armed forces. "

Enhancing the powers of Chief of Defence Staff

As a part of the reorganization of the defence sector, a bill was presented to parliament this week by the Ministry of Defence, Public Security, Law and Order to increase the powers of the Chief of Defence Staff with the establishment of a Committee of he Chief of Defence Staff.

The current Chief of the Defence Staff (CDS) is the head of the Joint Operations Headquarters (JOH) of the Sri Lankan Armed Forces and is a member of the National Security Council. The present Chief of the Defence Staff is Air Chief Marshal Donald Perera who succeeded Admiral D.W.K Sandagiri on 12 July 2006. A few years back the Chief of the Defence Staff was appointed to the highest rank in the branch of the Sri Lanka armed forces to which he belonged (equivalent to a US ‘four-star’ rank) being a General, an Admiral or an Air Chief Marshal. At present the Chief of Defence Staff heads the Joint Operations Headquarters (JOH) which is responsible for the inter service co-operation and the implementation of joint operations of the Sri Lankan military. However the respective service commanders have autonomy. The post of CDS was created in 1999 replacing the civilian post of chief of the Joint Operations Bureau which existed before.

Moshe Dyan said...

the background to the increase of SLDF strength MUST be mainy to FRUSTRATE the tamil elam dream.

this should be the guiding light.

if they are guided ONLY by the need to protect territorial integrity, boarders, and other OLD concepts, we will be in trouble.

the order of modern military response.
1. DETERRENCE
2. prevention
3. restriction
4. attack support services
5. fighting with the enemy
6. mitigation
7. disaster recovery
8. other bullshit after the event.

1 has the LOWEST long term cost and 8 has the HIGHEST long term cost. it goes in that order.

1 is a political strength and 8 is a fcuk-up. it goes in that order.

1 works OUR way, 8 works their way. it goes in that order.

the next lesson would be the difference between DETERRENCE & prevention!!! lol!

Moshe,

I am a die-hard fan of this defence plan. We most certainly need General Fonseka, Admiral Karannagoda, and Air Marshall Goonathilake serving in our future defence advisory committees. It is their foresight and wisdom together with President and Defence Secretary's leadership we wrote our own golden page in the chronicles. They have lots of things to do in shaping the national security policy of our nation. We need to march forward in single minded determination to improve our economy and defence. I hope that we soon will engage every young man and women in some kind of military training in the future. Lets keep our fingers crossed.

PS: I saw elsewhere that our legendary 53rd and 58th divisions will be stationed at Mankulam and Paranthan as separate reserve forces. Anyway, our SF and CR brothers will be busy in LRRP missions for years to come.

Sam Perera said...

Moshe,

I didn't see any indication of having some naval units at Vidaththalthivu, Devil's point, and Nachchikuda. It is extremely important to seal off the western seaboard for any future incursions of Eelamist from Tamilnadu side. I hope that our planners won't forget it.

Sam Perera said...

Moshe,

We need to defend this plan at every possible corner.

Moshe Dyan said...

sam,

100% agree.

sealing off the north western coast is a MUST.

but there are MAJOR challenges we should overcome.
1. this is a VERY good fishing area.

2. restricting the movement of fishing boats here directly affects MANY lives

3. however, without a SEVERE restriction (on distance), we CANNOT stop SL fishermen interacting with tamil madu fishermen.

4. some ppl are trying to open up DIRECT shipping with tamil madu. i'm TOTALLY against this crap. their argument that it will regularise goods movement is BULLSHIT. the PROBLEM is not goods coming in regular channels but the OTHER ONES!!

detecting their transport will be IMPOSSIBLE if ships/boats regularly go up & down between SL and tamil madu in the north.

if it was not allowed, then ANY crap that is travelling between SL & tamil madu in the north is a target and things work well.

5. illegal migration of tamil madu ppl is the BIGGEST problem. already there are more than 100,000 ILLEGAL immigrants from TN.

due to war they avoided coming, now they will restart it. we might have to use some very UNCONVENTIONAL methods!!! to our advantage there is NO RECORD of them!!!!!

6. border control and humaneness don't go together.

these are the hard choices we have to face that were not much of a problem during war.

NOLTTE=Peace said...

The Velvetithurai HQ with whole North Western covering seaboard was the Smugglers' Paradise that ultimately gave birth to LTTE.

We have to seal the entire Northern seaboard to prevent any illegal activity. Else, it would be the birth of next LTTE or the Northern Underworld, which would need another 30 years to conquer!

Therefore, it is better to nip it off the bud and maintain as it is through out.

Moshe Dyan said...

however, in the long run we cannot use mainly force forever at 100% perfection rate. that is where multiethnic colonization come in.

what we can do is have ppl who are NOT LOYAL to tamil madu in the north.

i LOVE it.

but sorry to disappoint you. it will NOT happen for at least another 100 years.

the SL identity must come within. it cannot be forced. still it can be done IF NOT for the tamil elam MFs.

1. the TE lobby is VERY powerful and very rich. and VERY active.

tamil diaspora's economy >> SL's economy

they use this to RETAIN the seperate identity at least among their relatives.

2. TE lobby is made up of CLOSE RELATIVES of our tamil ppl.

ppl are CLOSER to relatives than neighbours

3. tamil madu ALSO has plans for SL and pressure will be on SL (through india) to do little things that will eventually lead to big things. obviously there is a identity crisis.

SL cannot win all the tamils from their BIGGER alligiance to tamil madu. its their choice.

having said that there IS a way. but that cannot bring everyone into the true honest SL identity. that is based on making the other identity powerless, mythical and unachievable.

Why are these Eelamists are so concerned about how SF and WK getting along? How many of us are ready to accept our children marrying from the other community???. (ie. Sinhalese' children marrying from Tamil Community and Tamils's children marrying Sinhalese)

There should be a way to promote this.

2. His father came recently to Sri Lanka and then returned to India. So, it may be that VP was not a Sri Lankan citizen either. So, was he like, for example, these Norwegians, who messed up our country...a total foreigner?

Can we find out what exactly VP's status with respect to his claim to be a Sri Lankan Tamil was?

Did a non-Tamil Indian citizen make war on Sri Lanka pretending to be a Sri Lankan and a Tamil? Did he take everybody for a ride? What is the TRUTH?

The Vellalar Tamil racists in UTHR(Jaffna) assholes are doing their best to discredit Sri Lanka and blame the proper leadership in the country.

After their disgusting statement on 10/06/09 they are again digging the dead ass of Prabhaharan.

Look what these Vellalar Tamil racist assholes say about the Bob Rae incident. Because of these people we cannot have peace here.

His deportation reflects the paradox of continuing internal repression and unhealthy xenophobia despite the end of the war. It reflects a mindset that bodes ill for the minorities and the democratic rights of Sinhalese.

In our recent report, released on the 10th June 2009, we highlighted the character of present government and its leadership, which is using the euphoria following the military success to end the war to promote a majoritarian agenda with increasing authoritarianism.

But during the last stages of the war and thereafter, the bankruptcy of the political leadership and an attitude of imposing a majoratarian agenda is becoming clear.

Beginning with the killing of five students on the Trincomalee sea front in January 2006 through the thousands of extra-judicial murders over which the Defence Ministry presided were based on the premise that the victims were LTTE supporters. These were culpable acts based on the intelligence of paranoid minds and cry for a thorough investigation that will never come from the Sri Lankan Police.

To delay movement towards peace and reconciliation due to the personal whims and ambitions of the Defence Secretary and the military establishment would be a historic blunder.

This type of Vallalar Tamil racist can come only from the asses of UTHR(Jaffna) morons. They are discrediting our Defence Secretary, President, Police and troops.

We can never have peace if this type of Vallalar Tamil racist dogs cannot stop barking.

Hope Wijayapala is not part of this Vallalar Tamil racist UTHR(Jaffna) dogs. Or am I expecting too much?

Sam, Moshe,

I too agree that protecting and controlling unauthorized traffic between TN and SL along the NW coast is ESSENTIAL.

BTW, the Sethu-Samudram Canal project WILL become a reality. Then, deep draft ships will be able to navigate the Palk Strait in the future, avoiding the trip around Sri Lanka.

This will be pushed by both TN and India for commercial and National Defence reasons. In my judgment, the Ram-Bridge fighting the concept will lose ultimately.

This will reduce income to Sri Lankan ports. That is why quickly developing Hambantota was a great idea. That should be followed up with a crash program to capture for Trincomalee the premier position as THE PORT for ship construction, repair, refitting, and for transhipment of container goods and petroleum products in tankers, in this ENTIRE REGION, before the Indians wean away that business with their larger industrial base.

majoritarianism (uncountable)

1. a form of democracy in which decisions are made by a simple majority of some organized group

So, UTHR (Jaffna) is saying that we are a democratic society. It is similar to LTTE fighting 30 years to get us Sinhala Homelands. Remember Eelam = Hela Land (Hela Dveepa)

I received this email today and posting for everyone's benefit.

I do not know whether this is true or not!

===================================
I would like to share this interesting discovery from a classmate's son who has just recovered from dengue fever. Apparently, his son was in the critical stage at the ICU when his blood platelet count drops to 15 after ! 15 liters of blood transfusion.

His father was so worried that he seeks another friend's recommendation and his son was saved. He confessed to me that he gave his son raw juice of the papaya leaves. From a platelet count of 45 after 20 liters of blood transfusion, and after drinking the raw papaya leaf juice, his platelet count jumps instantly to 135. Even the doctors and nurses were surprised. After the second day he was discharged. So he asked me to pass this good news around.
Accordingly it is raw papaya leaves, 2pcs just cleaned and pound and squeeze with filter cloth. You will only get one tablespoon per leaf. So two! Tablespoon per serving once a day. Do not boil or cook or rinse with hot water, it will loose its strength. Only the leafy part and no stem or sap. It is very bitter and you have to swallow it like "Won Low Kat". But it works.

*Papaya Juice - Cure for Dengue*
You may have heard this elsewhere but if not, I am glad to inform you that papaya juice is a natural cure for dengue fever. As dengue fever is rampant now, I think it's good to share this with all.
A friend of mine had dengue last year. It was a very serious situation for her as her platelet count had dropped to 28,000 after 3 days in hospital and water has started to fill up her lung. She had difficulty in breathing. She was only 32-year old. Doctor says there's no cure for dengue. We just have to wait for her body immune system to build up resistance against dengue and fight its own battle. She ! already had 2 blood transfusion and all of us were praying very hard as her platelet continued to drop since the first day she was admitted.

Fortunately her mother-in-law heard that papaya juice would help to reduce the fever and got some papaya leaves, pounded them and squeeze the juice out for it. The next day, her platelet count started to increase, her fever subsided. We continued to feed her with papaya juice and she recovered after 3 days!!!
Amazing but it's true. It's believed one's body would be overheated when one is down with dengue and that also caused the patient to have fever. Papaya juice has cooling effect. Thus, it helps to reduce the level of heat in one's body, thus the fever will go away. I found that it's also good when one is having sore throat or suffering from heat.
Please spread the news about this as lately there are many dengue cases. It's great if such natural cure could help to ease the sufferings of dengue patients.
Furthermore it's so easily available.

Blend them, squeeze the juice, drink immediately! It's simple and miraculously effective!!

The Laws of Manu

59. Carnal intercourse with sisters by the same mother, with (unmarried) maidens, with females of the lowest castes, with the wives of a friend, or of a son, they declare to be equal to the violation of a Guru’s bed.
73. For his purification the slayer of a Brahmana shall make a hut in the forest and dwell (in it) during twelve years, subsisting on alms and making the skull of a dead man his flag.

74. Or let him, of his own free will, become (in a battle) the target of archers who know (his purpose); or he may thrice throw himself headlong into a blazing fire;
76. Or, in order to remove (the guilt of) slaying a Brahmana, he may walk one hundred yoganas, reciting one of the Vedas, eating little, and controlling his organs;

77. Or he may present to a Brahmana, learned in the Vedas, whole property, as much wealth as suffices for the maintenance (of the recipient), or a house together with the furniture;

78. Or, subsisting on sacrificial food, he may walk against the stream along (the whole course of the river) Sarasvati; or, restricting his food (very much), he may mutter thrice the Samhita of a Veda.

79. Having shaved off (all his hair), he may dwell at the extremity of the village, or in a cow-pen, or in a hermitage, or at the root of a tree, taking pleasure in doing good to cows and Brahmanas.

92. Or he may drink cow’s urine, water, milk, clarified butter or (liquid) cowdung boiling-hot, until he dies;
100. A Brahmana who has stolen the gold (of a Brahmana) shall go to the king and, confessing his deed, say, ‘Lord, punish me!’

101. Taking (from him) the club (which he must carry), the king himself shall strike him once, by his death the thief becomes pure; or a Brahmana (may purify himself) by austerities.

105. Or, having himself cut off his organ and his testicles and having taken them in his joined hands, he may walk straight towards the region of Nirriti (the south-west), until he falls down (dead);

PRABA'S END (Maj Gen Kamal Gunaratne's Account)

For those who are claiming that VP was tortured in the South before he was killed, here is my translation of an excerpt from an interview with MG Kamal Gunaratne (Irida Lankadeepa 07th June).

We started clearing operations in the Kadolana area around 9.30 AM on the 19th at the time the President was addressing the Parliament. Soon an intense battle was raging. I also went there. One of our boys shouted at me saying "Sir, the body of Prabakaran is here". Initially, I could not believe that. I told them to bring the body out. My boys dragged it out and laid it at my feet - the body that all of Sri Lanka was waiting eagerly for - the body that I spent sleepless nights hoping to find, was dragged along the water and there it was at my feet. Praba did not deserve any more honour than being dragged that way. Soon about 3000 of my boys were flocking around.

Thus he died while the president was addressing the parliament. All the rumours that he was brought to Colombo, tortured for a number of days and so on are completely untrue. I am telling you this with the greatest responsibility. He was killed my boys. But there is truth in one of the stories. He was not dressed in the uniform that you saw finally. We put that on him. The first commander to see his body was me.

I could hardly bear my excitement. I informed the Commander of the Army and informed him. I told him that "Maha Ekage Miniya hamba vuna". That is what I said in my excitement. He asked me, which Maha Eka? I told him Prabakaran's. He asked me "Are you sure?". I said that I was certain. Then I called Col Jagath Dias. Finally I informed my fellow commanders. I called Brig Shavendra Silva and told him " Machan, we found VP's body. come an see". I told Chagi also.

Looks like Sri Lanka has sent a bum to Canada as High Comissioner.

What a b*ll-less person this is, who does not stand up to GOSL's decision and going after a witch hunt.

Thank God our Foreign Service for posting this kind of incompetent idiots to foreign missions abroad,

Check his comments,
"Some Sri Lankan and Tamil expatriates in Canada believe de Silva's article was the report that nixed Rae's visit. "She may very well have told somebody," said Daya Perera, Sri Lanka's high commissioner in Ottawa. "It's quite possible. I wouldn't put it past her."

Perera said he intends to sue the paper and de Silva for suggesting he personally approved Rae's visa. The application was filed by the deputy high commissioner, he said.

Don't worry about the Sethu canal.

It will require constant re-dredging because when you dredge there, you mostly dredge sand not rock. That area underwater is mostly sand, so because of the currents of the seas sand will always pile-up in the palk straits. So constant re-dredging is required to keep the passage way open. That will be costly.

Second even if they dredged it perfectly like they wanted to, the ships traveling through it have to reduce speed significantly because water is still shallow compared to the water around southern/western/eastern lanka.

Ships all over the world are getting larger because it is more economical and cost effective to smaller cargo ships. But big ships need deeper waters, and most of them will not be able to cross the palk straits because it is too shallow.

In other words constant re-dredging, limits to size of ships that can use it and reduced speed for ships traveling through will be the halmarks of the Sethu canal.

So far the indications are that it is not suited well to compete with Colombo LET ALONE the future port of Hambantota.

**BTW, most ships travel through the straits of Malacca(Malaysia/Singapore), They will travel right past southern Lanka to get there because it is the more shorter route. They won't even use the sethu canal to loop-around northern lanka to get to Malacca straits because that would be waiting time and fuel.***

GoldenEagle said...

Let the Tamil Nadu people go ahead with the canal I say. They will fall flat on their face after it is completed.

If they don't go through with the project they will always complain of "what could have been". So I say go ahead.

I posted at DW (several times) the Sethu Samudram project details, and my analyses of impact. Yes, it is true that frequent redreging will be needed to keep the canal clear. It is also true that, because of cost, the canal will not be designed to accommodate the largest ships, like tankers and container ships, but only mid-size merchant vessels.

However, mid-size ships constitute the vast majority of commercial traffic, so we may lose the traffic going to the East coast of India from the West (Suez and Persian Gulf).

As you say, traffic between the Cape of Good Hope and Malacca Straits, and the Suez-Canal and the Malacca straits...which is most of the really heavy large-ship haulage.... will not be affected. The first of these would by-pass SL completely, and the latter usually stops in SL.

The only traffic that may be affected are mid-size ships travelling between the Gulf-of-Suez and the East Coast of India.

GoldenEagle said...

Ananda

The main reason ships might look at the Sethu canal is to save time but......

You must consider that ships will have to travel at a slower speed through the shallow sethu canal. Since it is shallow, careful navigation is required as well. They won't save as much time as they might have hope. All this has been calculated by Indian analysts themselves.

So I say, go ahead and build it.

Means that they laid him on the ground and went about the task. Those wide eyes we saw previously staring at the mammoty blade?

My only regret and complaint against our boys in this episode:

They should have tortured and killed the pig slowly, cutting off one small piece at a time like in a barbecue. Still better the pig should have been roasted alive over a slow fire and cut up before he conked off.

The pig was treated too well.

Ananda-USA,

There were a number of immigrants from southern India in the pre-independence era and in the early years of the post independece era.
I have an old picture of DS Senanakaye with a Sikh man who was working on an irrigation scheme.

It would be very easy for the Government to find out whether Prabjakaran's father, Thiruvengadam Velupillai, came from Kerala. The Government has his father and mother in custody.

I knew a old Malayalee gent who had come illegally in the 50's. He had to obtain a bogus birth certificate so that he could obtain a Sri lankan passport.

I don't think Prabjakaran's afther could have been a government servant, which he was for his entire working career, if he had come illegally.

Also, there were a number of Chinese who came before the communist revolution. Recently Prime Minister Ratnasiri Wickremanyaka gave citizenship to 150 Chinese who had lived most of their lives in Sri Lanka.

HRW seems to be experts in IDP resettlement also. We can resolve this issue if HRW and Anna Neistat have the answers to the following questions.

(1) Number of houses destroyed by LTTE before their withdrawal marathon (hint: roofing, doors, and windows were totally take out by LTTE from these homes.
(2) Number of bridges LTTE destroyed in their withdrawal marathon.
(3) Number of other public infrastructure destroyed by LTTE before their withdrawal marathon (hint: Kilinochichi municipal water supply system as partially destroyed by LTTE, also one reservoir was totally destroyed by LTTE)
(4) Number of land mines and booby traps LTTE setup before their withdrawal marathon.
(5) Time needed for law enforcement to arrest all the LTTE terrorists hiding among civilians.
(6) Time needed by SLDF to clear all the areas free of land mines and traps.
(7) Time needed for Sri Lanka to restore the essential public infrastructure destroyed by LTTE.

If they have done all of these things by themselves in the past, the I believe it is fair criticism. However, HRW neither has expertise or experience in any of the above mentioned tasks. The only thing they are supposed to do it use HR as a tool to control the poor countries on behalf of the west. Therefore this is pure HRW garbage.

PRABA's LAST MOMENTS

Here is a recreation of what actually happened in the last few moments of the Pig's life, based on all the evidence I could collect:

Kamal Gunaratne (KG's) boys find the pig hiding in the Kadolana grove, half submerged in water and dressed only in an amuda. They drag him squealing and shivering to KG and shove him on to the ground at KG's feet.

The terrified pig starts to beg KG for his life kissing his feet and worshipping him and aaying: "Namaskaram Dorai. Namaskaram. Andavane" The pig licks the mud covered boots of KG. "Nan Setta Pochchi Vana. Bhayankaram Dorai. Muruga. Muruga. Oh! Muruga.....Nan nallam dorai. Ellam shariyana pui......

Translation: "Aney mage deiyo, mava maranna epa. mama marenna hari bayai. Mama naraka muniyek neme dore. Ma gena kiyana deval vishala boru deiyo. Mama neme meva kare. Poddu, Soosai, Theepan, Bhanu, Varadakka onna ovun thamai me serama kare. Mama ahinsaka muniya dore. Un ova karala mava allala thiyala setta pochci una. Un mage puthavath narak kalaa dore."

Saying all that the pig shivers violently as if in an epileptic fit and faints face down.

KG walks away in disgust telling the boys to stand guard over him and starts calling his boss and so on. While his back is turned the boys roll him right side up and give him the mammoty treatment. They knew exactly what to do. Just one precise blow above the forehead keeping his face intact. Mutilating the face would make recognition difficult and lead the Diaspora to believe that it was not Praba. So they kept it nice and clean. But did that help? No the stupid diaspra were not still convinced.

KG comes back after phoning everybody back and exclaims. "Yako umbala ayi mekava meruve?"

"Ne Sir, muu negitala duvanna heduvane".

KG turns away to hide his smile.

"Onna okata unge uniform ekak andavapalla heluvallen thiyanne nethuva".

The rest you can see in the movie clip.

PRABA"S BRAIN SURGERY

After seeing that video clip where some Army boys (perhaps medics) working on Praba's brain, I was wondering what the hell they were doing. Now a pretty good theory has come to my mind.

They were removing the brain of Praba.

Now, why would they do that? One may think that they were trying to find out whether he had any brain at all. The way the pig has been acting towards the end , you cannot blame our boys for wondering about that.

The other more likely possibilities are:

1) They wanted to check its similarities with the brain of a Sus Domesticus (Common Pig). Knowing that Praba was a Sus Domesticus Homo - meaning a Pig in human form, (not, I repeat not, a homosexual pig) again we can see why they did that.

2) Somebody wanted his brain.

I think the 2nd possibility holds more water, so to speak. In this case who would want a stupid pig's brain? Then I remembered that Princeton, NJ keeps the brain of Einstein in a well preserved state. Why, because they want to know how that man was so brilliant.

Don't take me wrong. I am not putting a common pig in league with Einstein, though pigs are known to be quite smart, especially when it comes to finding their next meal, which is normally due a minute after the previous. No someone wanted to study the brain of the the most brutal terrorist for very practical purposes.

Now the plot gets thicker. Who would want to do that? Who but CIA and FBI of course. You see they have this Bin Laden and Ayman Al Zavahiri running loops around them and they have no clue how to catch them What better way than to find out the brain of a terrorist works and in this case the best one in the world?

You know, when you have the correct theory worked out, all the clues fall in line. Ask Columbo.

Why was Robert Blake calling KP, Hilary, The Norwegians and so on? To get Praba free? Don't make me laugh. They wanted his brain. And now our guys will hand it over when the 1.8 billion is coughed out.

also since the ships are running ALONG the indian coast there will be BIG RESTRICTIONS in CUTTING ACORSS the shipping routes by fishing/smuggling boats. that will be the end of the smugglers!!

BTW sethu project is NOT for ships going in asia's biggest shipping route to follow the indian route. that will NEVER happen.

it is for the transport with in the INDIAN subcontinent.

all other ships will go in the usual route which does not come close to india.

The 20/20 cup has brought the perfect platform for SL to shine to the world right in the midst of Tamil diaspora who was trying its best to batter the country. A world stage is made outside SL for the patriotic Lankans to celebrate wildly, hoisting and waving Lion flags so soon after the country's military victory. It to happen right in the centre of England where so much bad publicity was created is a god send blessing. The very papers that lambasted SL would not have imagined to write glowing tributes to Sri Lankan cricket brilliantly executed by our team. The media that seemed to have a crusade to talk on nothing but killings murders and human right violations is heaping praise now on the country's cricketers.Tamil diaspora's limp protests were overwhelmed by deliriously cheering Sri Lankans singing and drumming their way down Trent Bridge. Dilshan,Malinga,Mendis ,Sanath & Sangakkara all have taken to the hearts of cricketing public overnight.
Who would have thought England would provide the ideal place to express Sri Lankan jubilation when its media and politicos were at war with SL just a few moons away. Now the world got the opportunity to see the cheering and dancing Sri Lankans draped in Lion flags thus showing the world a completely different image of true Lanka when there was all to see was a diaspora protesting and shouting against the country. Could there have been a worse slap on the face for the diaspora? When the whole ethnic population, Indian,Pakistani,Bangladeshi,Sri Lankan and Carribeans are buzzing with enthusiasm and fun, it is the moron Tamil diaspora who are isolated and left unaccounted. This will bring further truth to the diaspora that their children will be raised in a vacuum of feeling no bond to a home country to cerebrate competitive events leading to utter humiliation and frustration among their friends and therefore to feel slaves to the whites unless they quickly realize their folly and rally round SL.
The 20/20 cup has come at an opportune time at the right place for SL and wish it to be a Sri Lanka and England final but the icing of the cake will be if Sri Lanka lifts the cup!

ANANDIANS

Just received this from a friend. Are there any Anandians who can give some ideas?

Dear fellow Anandians,

Most of us knew that the Defense Secretary and the Commanders of the
Army and Navy were products of Ananda.

To know that almost all the key players in the battle from the Generals ranks were from our alma mater makes us proud.

What I am searching for is the the common quality, attitude, value or
other attribute that made these Anandians fearless, military strategists of excellence, patriotic to the core, leaders who motivated their troops, isciplined and committed to the cause.

If we can find that which they learnt/acquired at Ananda to excel as much, we should be able to reach similar heights in our respective fields/endeavours. This is not to say that what each of us has achieved is inadequate but to set a standard with our military leaders as a benchmark.

Regards

Moshe,

what you said about Sethu project is very true. The bizzar thing here is that even indian commercial ship numbers going across the sethu canal would be low.

A local expert pointed out the daily "passer by" ship count for Sethu compared to other major canals of the world and numbers are very low.

The secret here is that they have a planned nuclear power plant in south india and there might be ships loaded nuclear material, passing through this canal. Therefore Sethu is not a commercial project , but it has a military/strategic objective. Otherwise there is no reason for them to revamp this project which was abandoned earlier.

Ananda-USA said...

Observer, Moshe, GoldenEagle,

There are two thrusts to the Sethu Samudram project. The cover story, propagated by TN, is the commercial objective of serving the South East coast of India and the industrial-commercial base there is the ONLY interest.

However, the second objective, deliberately hidden from public view, is the military one...this should concern us in SL. The ability to quickly transfer Naval assets between the East and West coasts of India without going around Sri Lanka, and exposing these ships to attack (by ships of other great powers, and possibly their land-based units in Sri Lanka) beyond the range of land-based defences on Indian soil, is of GREAT INTEREST to the Union Govt of India (GOI). This is what I call the LEGITIMATE defence interest of India.

However, let us now introduce another POLITICO-MILITARY objective dear to the hearts of many TAMIL NADU politicians, and less so (provided SL is capable of offering an adequate defence to Indian REGIONAL hegemonic interests) to the GOI, because it has separatist ramifications of its own.

As we all know, the Tamil EELAM project was crafted by the RAW of the GOI, with the enthusiastic support of the Greater Dravidian Nation (GDN)supporters in Tamil Nadu. Ultimately, the idea of the TN pro-LTTE GDN politicians (Karunanidhi, Vaiko, Thirumavalavan, Ramadoss, ad nauseam) was to create Eelam, ANNEX EELAM to TN, and set about expanding the GDN from there in BOTH South India, in SL, and in the global Diaspora.

With that TN-EELAM union ACHIEVED, the SETHU SAMUDRAM canal would become an INTERNAL SEA CHANNEL of the GDN, defensible from BOTH sides from land bases located in TN and SL.

The NEXT step of the GDN, and of the rabid GDN-supporters, was to SECEDE from INDIA, EXTENDING and INCORPORATING within the GDN the Dravidian states of Kerala, Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh.

If that is acheived, the GDN would be fairly LARGE independent state, with REGIONAL interests. Thus, the GDN would have the SAME NEED as the GOI to be able to transfer commercial and military assets by SEA between the West and East coasts! The difference, for Sri Lanka, is that the GDN is an ENEMY POWER with a historical VESTED INTEREST in occupying as much land in Sri Lanka as they can conquer.

With the military DEFEAT of the LTTE this agenda has been PUSHED back, perhaps indefinitely, but the underlying concept of LAND BASED control of the channel FROM BOTH ENDS lingers on, delayed but NOT DEAD.It is of STRATEGIC interest to both TN and the GOI. As Sri Lanka moves to assert its independence and sovereignty more and more in the years ahead, the GOI will become increasingly anxious, and may fall prey to the self-serving "advice" offered by TN politicians for "action" against Sri Lanka. The National interest of India will dictate their policy, not universal principles on non-interference.

We must also remember that the GDN-states are rapidly becoming the "JEWELS IN THE CROWN" of India with their rapid improvements in education, science, technology, medical services, energy (nuclear, renewables). Moreover, they are viewed as "SAFE LOCATIONS" in India toconstruct and operate defence and space-technology installations, far away from attack by the major enemies of India, and allowing control of the Indian Ocean sea lanes. Thus, INDIA has a LARGE vested interest this part of INDIA.

BOTTOMLINE: BOTH the GOI and TN have strong MILITARY interests in the Sethu Samudram project, from BOTH Common and Divergent viewpoints. THe Divergence in interest will become obvious in the event a separate GDN becomes a reality: time will tell.

I have sent a detailed analysis of these issues and scenarios to the MOD/SLDF of the GOSL.

Great for Sri Lanka and too bad for Eelamists like Wandurupala. One of the most important matters are also being addressed, that is to have military cantonments in Kilinochchi and Mulathive. Way to go our defence planners. We are waiting eagerly behind you to see these great ideas taking shape.

A few Kind Words for Eelamist Racists.

This country is not yours. This country is ours, yes us Sri Lankans of all ethnic origins.

Beefing up the Army

All these changes have become necessary because the cry for Eelam is still much alive, though Prabhakaran is no more, and the need to further strengthen the security forces to prevent a possible re-emergence of an armed struggle for Eelam, is imperative. Army Chief Sarath Fonseka is now taking steps to increase the manpower of the Army to 300,000. Accordingly, several additional Divisions are to be deployed, so that, the Army could face any future contingency. 58 and 53 Divisions have already been re-named as additional Divisions. Meanwhile, a decision has been taken to further strengthen the Special Fores (SF) and the Commando regiment. Establishing Army cantonments in Mullativu and Kilinochchi as in Panagoda, is now receiving the attention of the Army Chief, who is expected to be appointed CDS shortly, to herald the major changes in the offing.

observer, GE, ananda,

agree with your views.

re: the expansion theory of india (GOI) by Ananda...

i don't think this is true. IF india wants to expand, it should NOT be digging the sethu canal. by doing so the ability to link TN and TE is naturally restricted. india can always send ships to SL and its waters without the sethu project if required.

in this regard, in my view the sethu project is MORE about keeping the FALLING INDIAN STATES TOGETHER.

it is RATHER a ring around india. to be precise, a RING inside the NECKLACE OF BEADS of china that has come up encircling india.

also after the mumbai attacks it makes sense to build this ring. look at india's neighbours. EVERYONE of them have MAJOR grudges against india!!!

TN is happy bcos of commercial benefits it gets. but some TN politicos don't like it. you know who.

it will also have symbolic value to TN-TE proponents as it physically SPLITS it into "two" (they believe it is one).

also check in TOILETNET about how the LTTE is against it. their reasons can be classified as "petty". but they obviously don't give the REAL reason!!!!

the ONLY disadvantage to SL will be the destruction of MAJOR fish pools in mannar and north of jaffna peninsula.

BUT that is VERY GOOD security-wise!!! shipping activity in this areas has ALWAYS been a major headache for us. we discussed this recently.

IF we can put the blame of RESTRICTING northern fishermen for going to the mannar/north of jaffna fishing areas on the SETHU CRAP, that would be fantatstic!!!

i said this will be unpopular. but looks like there is a way out.

Thank God.
