I fully agree.he must not enter the political cesspit.we would like to remember him for his great achievement in eradicating the terrorists.
I think he should be useful in charge of a defence training establishment like a defence academy where his services could be used by foreign personal who may wish to be trained in SL.

offering the secretary post of the sports ministry to SF is a mockery.

UNLESS SF wanted it which is dubious. he was a brilliant sportsman but that doesn't mean he has to be made the sec.

with a MASSIVE 20% increase in defence budget and no war, SL should be STRATEGISING defence which means SF, SF and SF should be in the scene.

has anything similar happened to MR??? his opponents know that there are only 2 ways to get rid of MR.

1. physically get rid of him.
2. bring SF or GR to contest the next presidential election

by creating disrespect between Mr and SF, someone may be trying to separate the 2 of them.

Hunger striker's £7m Big Mac: Tamil who cost London a fortune in policing was sneaking in fast-food

He was the hunger striker at the centre of one of the longest-running demonstrations ever mounted in Britain.

For weeks Parameswaran Subramaniyan lay in a tent outside the Houses of Parliament as Tamils protested about the plight of relatives under attack in Sri Lanka.

At one stage, his supporters claimed he was 'critically weak'.

Tamil takeaways: 'Hunger striker' Parameswaran Subramaniyan, sitting outside the Houses of Parliament, secretly ate McDonald's burgers
The protest finally ended in June, but two revelations put it back in the spotlight yesterday.

First, police said it had left them with a £7.1million overtime bill.

Then it emerged that Mr Subramaniyan, 28, had eased his ordeal by secretly eating McDonald's burgers.

Scotland Yard surveillance teams using specialist monitoring equipment had watched in disbelief as he tucked into the clandestine deliveries.

A police insider said: 'In view of the overtime bill, this has got to be most expensive Big Mac ever

I hope they give this LTTE whore bitch the "works"...that will make her remember the milk she drank from her whore mom's tits!

'Do not dictate terms affecting country’s sovereignty'
Oct 8 (Island)

"Several International Non Governmental Organizations and Non Governmental Organizations work with the Government. But, some of them think they could do anything in our country by providing cash aid. Such attitudes should not be encouraged in Sri Lanka," Prime Minister Ratnasiri Wickramanayake said, at a ceremony to mark the 60th anniversary of the Department of Wildlife Conservation at the BMICH.

Neat! Truly neat!

It is time we told off these meddling white LTTE biased gooks/bastards/bitches where to get off - and did so with utterances from no less person than our PM!

When the country's PM speaks, it becomes news (as opposed to a minister/dep-minister saying it).

As such, yes, Thusitha, I agree with you that PM Rat Wick did the right thing by reminding one-and-all about the Monika Lewinsky "the cigar that never lit up" episode!

ha ha ha...

The key is for Prez MR to keep away from these types of below-the belt utterances and today in GOSL we see it.

So, there appears to be a method to our madness one can say...

Kerry Lugar bill not a threat to Pakistan: US

Pakistani protesters rally against the United States in Multan,

ExpressBuzz.com
October 8, 2009

WASHINGTON
: Dispelling fears raised by the Pakistan Army that the Kerry Lugar bill is a compromise on the country's sovereignty, US Assistant Secretary of State for Public Affairs P.J. Crowley said "we are not going to impose US solutions on Pakistani problems".

The bill provides unconditional non-military US aid to Pakistan but imposes conditions for military assistance. The Pakistan Army said the bill is not in line with the official position of Zardari's government, GEO TV reported Thursday.

The Obama administration believes there was no threat to the democratically elected government in Islamabad in view of the Pakistani Army's public opposition to the bill, Crawley told reporters Wednesday.

Asked about the differences that have emerged between the Zardari government and Pakistan military on the issue, Crawley said: "I don't think it is a threat to the civilian government in Pakistan."

"Quite the opposite. I think that actually what you are seeing is a government in Pakistan that is becoming more confident. It is becoming more assertive. It is doing things that are important to, you know, the Pakistani people," Crowley said.

"We are working very diligently, very closely with the Pakistani government. That's why the Secretary (of State) and the (Pakistani) foreign minister met yesterday (Wednesday). It's why the secretary and President (Asif Ali) Zardari met in New York," he added.

Noting that the US recognises that Pakistan is shouldering a significant burden on the war against terrorism, he said the administration wants to make sure that there is proper international support for Pakistan.

Asserting that the Obama administration is committed to help Pakistan, he, however, said the US would not impose its will or dictate things to Islamabad. "We are committed to work closely with Pakistan. We are not going to impose US solutions on Pakistani problems."

This is the same mongal who told that 'army commander is not good even for salvation army'. (I am not sure he talks by mouth or ****) Mongal first get some foreign money and buy a lot of "thanakola" and make our people eat it instead of rice, then some people may believe these losers. (I am also amazed to see how these gal kollas became a military expert overnight.) Its ironic too Mongal has to praise now the same person he wanted to destroy while ago.

Offering the secretary position of the Sports Ministry to SF is a disgrace. He should reject this offer.

(Does this mean the post "Chief of Defence Staff", he currently holds has no value? I am afraid even to think about such a scenario. How much hope we had on everything?)/

CDS was just a honorary position and when SF was given it its said amendments were done so that CDS plays a bigger role. However, we don't see any such change. Also, it seems there is some issue between SF and Rajapakshe bros (precisely with GR) probably for who is better than who.

So this is more than enough for RW/ UNP/ Mongal clan to hit on the nerves of sinhala nationalist vote base. This is already in progress, with a mix of twisted truths, half truths, total lies and exaggerated events on LNW, etc. (Seems this is their one big trump card in hand for next elections..)

We just need to back and correct MR and his men. (moona ekka tharaha wela nahe kapa ganda epa kiyanawane..)

Also, we should not be victims of well organized propaganda of UNP/mongal clan. (Recall what happened to the son and dad who tried to take advice of every one about their donkey.)

If MR gives a powerful position for SF mongal will say military junta is on the way, lets send all of them home. If MR gives a low profile position for SF, mongal will say 'see, how bad and ungrateful to disregard our war hero'. If MR gives embassy position for SF, mongal will say 'MR chases away our war hero out of country'.

In general, whatever MR does we can criticize him. Even I can do this even on daily basis (better than mongal). But that's not my country needs. My country needs true patriotic leaders and not power hungry losers.

I was never comfortable with DJ. But the way MR screwed him wasn't good either. And they are not the only people got a similar treatment.
Yes, the country needs a great leader (opposition bitches have no chance in this regard). But I feel we are loosing the one could have been such(MR).
It more and more looks like the time for the 'yes men' and opportunists. Lack of criticism from proper corners doesn't help either.

100% agree. And I've been saying the same.

MR seem to have got deceived in his own flamboyance. And in the newly acquired political acquaintance of Duminda Silvas, Anarkalis, Thilangas [note the 's' there. I mean categorically, not individually]. And he's flattered too much by the "yes"men Dullases, Boggles, Sajins etc.

Latest philosophy has become "I saved the nation, so what?" or "let's talk about May 19th".

With all due respect to heroes [forever] we need to erase May19th from our memory and move on. If you remember well, I was very crossed by 20th May, and I wrote "victory is poison, pls do not get contaminated". I feel that it is exactly what is happening.

Behind the mega blast parades of "May 19", endless propaganda and endless elections, lots of limbless soldiers are finding nobody to ask for what they lack in their life. So many war heroes are forgotten, although it is publicly stated every now and then that "we shud take care of our heroes".

MR has done a great service to our nation. But I am not a believer that MR dreamt of this from his kid age or even when he entered politics in 1970. MR was a silent minister in a cabinet where a megalomaniac peace lunatic CBK passed a P-TOM. MR could have been anyone.

But he turned our savior. That was because the situation was set to be so. He was left only with that political path by CBK and RW. He found that his own party [mostly peace hawks then] would reject him. Patriotic elements of JVP and JHU gave him temp shelter ideologically. MR blossomed.

Today, I wonder where those patriotic forces are. [let me clear you that I do not align with JVP/JHU politically, but in the context of war they are my allies] Some have left MR and protesting against him [rightly or wrongly]. some have been forced to become yes men, or the frontline dancers for the May 19th praising procession. Wholly they're ignored.

MR who took temporary shelter in patriotic camp, owns it now, leaving its original landlords as borders, with the chance of being kicked out anytime. MR brings Anarkali and Duminda and tells everyone to accept them in his patriotic camp. Duminda will show his arm and Anarkali would say "haanee, harii sweet paytriots laa".

I am not against Anarkali, and her right for politics. But i am against Anarkali-brand [not person, but category] of politics chosen by MR. Sometime back I had a discussion on this with Asithri too. It is not a personal matter. But being a strong supporter of Mr and his war I am failing to see what I can discuss about her. She'll have to grow up first. And even in that case her upbringing raises doubts in me, whether we'll share anything to discuss in THIS context.

I am one man. Hemantha is another. But there are hundreds more. They [and us too] still vote for MR, with total displeasure. MR says "he he patriots" and makes his walk further into anarkali-brand politics.

Where is the plan for north? Where is ethnic integration? How did terras get away? Why do we not have a grand inquiry? Is Rishard Baduddin not liable to the legal proceedings over Lakshman Cooray? What are we doing to these IDPs? Are we grooming a vote base for TNA? There is a lot of other things than Anarkali-brand topics for the president to look. He overlooks them.

And they seem to loose their common sense. After so many years, MR no longer feels the heart beat of our nation. Look at the mockery of elephant cubs. Look at the mockery of Boggles. Dullas's historical ad. Whole hell-break-loose times with Mervyn. MR is resonating with these, isn't he? Otherwise, where is the humble apology.

Today ppl are compelled to support him. We still have hopes. But the big % votes do not mean that public have lost conscience. On a different day with a different Sun, these ppl may teach him the lesson he forgot in his newest anarkali-brand politics.

Again i wish to be wrong.

Sujeewa and Hemantha,
Don't you think you are asking too much from a MR? There is a limit a political leader can do. There are so many wrongs in our country. They cannot be address within few months. They takes years to do. MR cannot micro manage every body. He cannot stop the corruption in the country. They will stop when peace come to the country and when the nation start developing.

Also about SF. What if MR and GR screw SF? What is the big deal. SF is a soldier. He had one duty. He completed that brilliantly. Every person in the country knows that. Every Child born in SL would know that in the future. No one can take that away from him. If he is a true patriot, that is all he should require. Also now the army is in the hands of really good soldiers. So he can relax and let the next generation do what needs to be done.
Therefore all these things about MR, GR screwing him should not matter. The more we talk about this BS, more we would divide our nation. There would be lot of vultures waiting for this type of situation to occur.
So let us try to avoid this situation.

AP source: Obama focusing on al-Qaida, not Taliban

By JENNIFER LOVEN, AP White House Correspondent Jennifer Loven, Ap White House Correspondent

October 8, 2009

WASHINGTON – President Barack Obama is prepared to accept some Taliban involvement in Afghanistan's political future and will determine how many more U.S. troops to send to the war based only on keeping al-Qaida at bay, a senior administration official said Thursday.

The sharpened focus by Obama's team on fighting al-Qaida above all other goals, while downgrading the emphasis on the Taliban, comes in the midst of an intensely debated administration review of the increasingly unpopular war.

Aides stress that the president's decision on specific troop levels and the other elements of a revamped approach is still at least two weeks away, and they say Obama has not tipped his hand in meetings that will continue at the White House on Friday.

But the thinking emerging from the strategy formulation portion of the debate offers a clue that Obama would be unlikely to favor a large military increase of the kind being advocated by the top U.S. commander in Afghanistan, Gen. Stanley McChrystal. McChrystal's troop request is said to include a range of options, from adding as few as 10,000 combat troops to — the general's strong preference — as many as 40,000.

Obama's developing strategy on the Taliban will "not tolerate their return to power," the senior official said in an interview with The Associated Press. But the U.S. would fight only to keep the Taliban from retaking control of Afghanistan's central government — something it is now far from being capable of — and from giving renewed sanctuary in Afghanistan to al-Qaida, the official said.

The official is involved in the discussions and was authorized to speak about them but not to be identified by name because the review is still under way.

Bowing to the reality that the Taliban is too ingrained in Afghanistan's culture to be entirely defeated, the administration is prepared to accept some Taliban role in parts of Afghanistan, the official said. That could mean paving the way for Taliban members willing to renounce violence to participate in a central government — the kind of peace talks advocated by Afghan President Hamid Karzai to little receptiveness from the Taliban. It might even mean ceding some regions of the country to the Taliban.

In Kabul on Thursday, a suicide car bomber detonated his vehicle outside the Indian Embassy and killed 17 people in the second major attack in the city in less than a month. The Taliban claimed responsibility.

Obama has talked positively about reaching out to moderates in the Taliban since he first announced a new Afghanistan strategy in March. It would be akin to, though more complicated than, the successful efforts in Iraq to persuade Sunni Muslim insurgents to cooperate with U.S. forces against al-Qaida there.

Obama has conferred nearly every day this week on the war, and continued that Thursday afternoon with Vice President Joe Biden and Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton.

AP source: Obama focusing on al-Qaida, not Taliban

.....continued 1.....

On Wednesday, the eighth anniversary of the war launched by President George W. Bush after the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks, Obama and more than a dozen officials in his war council met for three hours to focus on Afghanistan's neighbor, Pakistan. Another of those larger discussions — the fourth of five currently scheduled — is set for Friday, on Afghanistan. That meeting also could feature the group's first discussion of specific troop options.

In the first two of the sessions, which are taking place in the secure Situation Room in the White House basement, Obama kept returning to one question for his advisers: Who is our adversary, the official said.

The answer was al-Qaida, as it was back in March.

Amid changing circumstances in Afghanistan, the renewed determination has big implications for the current war debate.

There now are no more than 100 al-Qaida in Afghanistan. Instead, the U.S. fight in Afghanistan is against the Taliban, now increasingly defined by the Obama team as distinct from al-Qaida. While still dangerous, the Taliban is seen as an indigenous movement with almost entirely local and territorial aims and far less of a threat to the U.S.

Obama's team believes some elements in the Taliban are aligned with al-Qaida, with its transnational reach and aims of attacking the West, but probably not the majority and mostly for tactical rather than ideological reasons, the official said.

"They're not the same type of group," White House press secretary Robert Gibbs said. "It's certainly not backed up by any of the intelligence."

That leaves the primary aim in Afghanistan to deny al-Qaida any ability to regroup there as it did when the Taliban was in power before the U.S. ousted them.

A focus on al-Qaida is the driving force behind an approach being advocated by Biden as an alternative to the McChrystal recommendation for a fuller counterinsurgency effort inside Afghanistan.

Biden has argued for keeping the American force there around the 68,000 already authorized, including the 21,000 extra troops Obama ordered earlier this year, but significantly increasing the use of unmanned Predator drones and special forces for the kind of surgical anti-terrorist strikes that have been successful in Pakistan, Somalia and elsewhere.

There also is increasing reluctance among Obama's advisers to commit large additional numbers of troops because of concerns about the impact on already severely strained U.S. forces and the troubled Karzai government.

In Pakistan, however, the administration has been encouraged by the government's recent willingness to aggressively battle extremists inside its borders. Getting additional cooperation from Pakistan is delicate, as the anti-extremist operations remain extremely controversial there and the U.S.-backed civilian government in Islamabad is weak. But the administration sees opportunity there nonetheless.

Clinton has not revealed how she is leaning in the sessions, according to aides. While she is broadly supportive of building up troop levels — although not necessarily in the bigger numbers favored by McChrystal — she also believes economic and other civilian efforts must be prominent parts of the plan too, said the aides, who spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to detail her views.

Defense Secretary Robert Gates, long wary of a large troop presence in Afghanistan, appears to have grown more comfortable with the prospect of a moderate, middle-path increase.

AP source: Obama focusing on al-Qaida, not Taliban

......continued 2........

Many lawmakers from Obama's own Democratic Party do not want to see additional U.S. troops sent to Afghanistan. According to a new Associated Press-GfK poll, public support for the war has dropped to 40 percent from 44 percent in July.

Rep. David Obey, the chairman of the House Appropriations Committee who led an effort in 2007 to block money for the Iraq war, emerged with deep concerns from an hourlong Capitol Hill briefing Thursday for House lawmakers of both parties by Obama national security adviser James Jones. Obey cited the high cost to the country of a ramped-up war, as well as doubts about the ability of the Afghan and Pakistan governments to be effective partners.

Republicans, meanwhile, are urging Obama to heed the military commanders' calls soon or risk failure. "Unnecessary delay could undermine our opportunity for success," House Republican leader John Boehner of Ohio said Thursday.

The article I posted just now on Obama administration's developing approach to the Afghan war said:

1. "Obama's developing strategy on the Taliban will "not tolerate their return to power," the senior official said in an interview with The Associated Press. But the U.S. would fight only to keep the Taliban from retaking control of Afghanistan's central government — something it is now far from being capable of — and from giving renewed sanctuary in Afghanistan to al-Qaida, the official said."

2. "Bowing to the reality that the Taliban is too ingrained in Afghanistan's culture to be entirely defeated, the administration is prepared to accept some Taliban role in parts of Afghanistan, the official said. That could mean paving the way for Taliban members willing to renounce violence to participate in a central government — the kind of peace talks advocated by Afghan President Hamid Karzai to little receptiveness from the Taliban. It might even mean ceding some regions of the country to the Taliban."

It is a PIPE DREAM to believe the Taliban

1. will accept not being the dominant force in any Afghan govt,

2. would be willing to accept only regional power,

3. would be willing to abandon their medieval theocratic approach to governing,

4. would be willing to abandon the Al Quaida, which they refused to do after 9/11.

When this news, that the Obama Administration is contemplating essentially acommodating the Taliban, becomes clear to the middle and upper classes in Afghanistan, those Afghans will feel VERY INSECURE, and will PRECIPITATE THEIR MASS EXODUS OF from Afghanistan. Furthermore, all the REGIONAL WARLORDS will begin to move towards consolidating their own power bases annticipating the return of the Taliban. ALL HOPE of a STRONG CENTRAL GOVERNMENT in Afghanistan will go up in smoke, together with development of the Afghan economy on a national scale. If this news true, I fell sorry for the Afghans.

Furthermore, the Karzai Govt will COLLAPSE in short order, and then. LACKING AFGHAN ALLIES WILLING TO FIGHT BACK, the US will evacuate and abandon Afghanistan in a HURRY.

This is my personal opinion on what will happen if the US goes lukewarm on pursuing the war Afghanistan as this news suggests.

Do you have any different prognostications?

What you have written above I totally agree. Since 19th of May MR seems to have abandoned us the grass roots who supported him. I don’t want to wash any dirty linen for patriotic reasons as the enemies of the country would love it. We are sad that our investments are at a loss in some instances in danger of losing for ever. We appealed to the people there when those elephant cubs were beaten by the thuggish looking handellars. Then my friend was refused a visa who have been doing a great job sorting out the mess in our collage, some of our houses have been forcibly occupied by thugs. Then the sad state of the srilankan. To me it looks like the people up there haven’t got the will or good sense to tackle these. Law and order situation is truly bad which had come down to the street level even to your own home. I constantly have to finance the upkeep of my business from abroad. Last August I had to leave a fair bit of money with my people to pay for overheads but was stolen by a 16 year old nephew of my partner while his sister came down to the airport. Kandy police doesn’t know what to do with this case where the offender is a minor who excelled in a prestigious school in Kandy. Some involved is a lot and he and his mates have gone down to Colombo stayed in hotels with some Colombo girls blew most of it ,perhaps gambelled it on a casino? When the leadership was allowing those cubs to be beaten up then what do you expect the rest of the population to do. Leaders and their aids must set an example to the nation and they live a very arrogant life accountable to no one. This is sad and we have no victory to celebrate after the 19th.

also the russians got something with the taliban. taliban was used to CONSUME the mujahidin which was pro-US. this relationship can be disrupted, if the war on taliban stops.

looks like a BPR project.

but as you say, the next step must be to take on the taliban. otherwise taliban will become the next big thing!! a never ending cycle.

kevin, and others,

In your posts, you assign to MR and the GOSL all of the ills of Sri Lankan society, that have taken root in Sri Lanka over several decades. These problems grew primarily due to weakening of the law and order situation in the country; these things cannot be SWITCHED OFF the day after the war is won.

Some of the problems kevin describes are personal issues best addressed within his own family by its elders; we cannot hold MR responsible for those too!

The gradual degradation of respect for the law in the country was a direct result of the weakening of government control over various segments of society, both regionally and demographically.

The free availability of powerful weapons and explosives, the existence of parts of the country beyond the jurisdiction of government to which miscreants could flee, the ability of people to escape the law by fleeing abroad through uncontrolled borders, the corruption of state and local government officials and security personnel, and so on, was made possible by the availability of vast sums of underground money circulated by the LTTE, and by other criminal elements.

Don't forget that it was only a few months ago that it was quite uncertain in Sri Lanka whether you would be able to return home in one piece without being blasted to bits at the bus stand, or the train station.

The lack of security guaranteed that there would be little investment, or business and employment growth in Sri Lanka. This translated into high inflation and high interest rates ensuring a high cost of living, and too little money in the hands of people to pay their bills. People unable to earn enough to live through their regular jobs, resort to stealing, and taking bribes to make ends meet .. and the moral fiber of the nation as a whole declines, degrades, dissolves.

Now, Peace and Security on the national front has finally been achieved. Strengthened Law and Order, and increased CIVILITY in interactions between people, are sure to follow, but that takes TIME.

Not enough TIME has elapsed since the end of the war for these things to take root again, and grow. Mahinda Rajapaksa and his crew did something that no other govt or party was able to achieve in the past, and few people believed it was even possible. Remember that our "human rights heroes" CBK and RW were getting ready to accept a de-facto partitioning of the country.

We are still in the midst of attending to MANY PROBLEMS at the national level: resettling IDPs, chasing after the residual LTTE and hidden traitors, fending off foreigners who want to prosecute the leaders who rescued our country from terrorism and disintegration, coping with the loss of international loans and trade benefits (e.g., GSP+), are among them.

In the meantime, the UNP, the TNA, the JVP and other assorted political opponents are attempting to disrupt society, being incurably jealous of the achievements of the current GOSL, just so they can propel themselves to power. Patriotism is NOT FOR THEM, if it were we would have them coming together to form a UNITY GOVERNMENT.

How then, do you expect Sri Lanka to become an overnight VALHALLA?

I say to ALL PATRIOTS, please understand that Mahinda Rajapaksa and his GOSL cannot reverse all the accumulated ills of Sri Lanka overnight.

Cut them some slack, and assist them where ever you can. HAVE SOME OF THAT FAITH you showed in them during the height of the war .. these people have done more for you, me and all citizens of Sri Lanka than any other government of Sri Lanka since Independence!

I see some of the same things you talk about; but I don't expect MIRACLES.

I see the HIGH PRIORITY PROBLEMS BEING SOLVED .. ONE BY ONE.

Accordingly, I am COMMITTED to doing all I can to help all patriots, including the current GOSL, succeed in achieving a more perfect Sri Lankan society.

But, HAVE PATIENCE, my friends; Rome was not built in a day!

RE: MR

I am not complaining for not doing the big list of items. My cry is more about what he's doing. As I see no initiative into any.

Pls note that I am yet to believe that there is a parting between MR and SF. So I did not talk about that. I still see taht it is more of a wish item among many.

Since Thusitha spoke about it, here is my take. SF is soldier you're right but by being the highest ranked soldier on national security he's got the right to question some actions of politicians. All politicians are not above every soldier.

But in any case, we do not know any such problems regarding SF.

My blame on MR is purely in choosing seeni bola politics. RW, of all ppl pioneered that. Now, when he shud move forward gracefully, MR seem to have found scoring for a chosen lot of his.

Ex:

- Pussycats running away from camps

- The nonsense he made with two elephants. The minister and Nilame didn't even consider what he said.

- Deterioration of foreign service

- Sajin Vass Gunawardena, use of PSD and all the rest of nonsense

- Anarkali

- Duminda/Thilanga politics in colombo [this may be fair as they had to win some votes in colombo]

- Dayan Jayathilaka

- Mervyn

- Most ministers are messing around and he keeps closed eye

- Way they did war against underworld [looks like only one side of under world]

- P B Jayasundara

List is endless. I believe MR Prez has to do something soon.

Let's say they're mistakes, still how come no acceptance or inquiry has happened.

As such, it is likely that he will be unable to effectively wage war in Afghanistan. From now on, all we will hear of is "peace" with people who would rather have "pieces" of other peoples property.

Is this a Norwegian plot to tie Obama's hands? If it is and it succeeds, the US is Right Royally Screwed!

I wonder whether the award of the Nobel Peace Prize jointly to Franklin Roosevelt and Winston Churchill on the eve of WW-II would have resulted in a negotiated "peace" with Hitler, leaving Hitler occupying a large part of his ill-gotten gains in Europe!

Pander to the EGOs, and buy-off the leaders before they can act in the best interest of their nations!

Yes! You have a valid point there but as I see it we have seen siblings of politicians misbehaving openly with impunity. So are the likes of Mervin and others. They take most of the TV and media time in SL, that is if you care to go there and live and see to your self. Kids follow these guys as something glamorous and even ‘cool’ as they say. These days parents have little control. This is why we always expect people who are in the limelight by virtue of their privilege positions to set examples to the nation.
When Tony Blair’s son was held by the cops for being drunk, to protect his father’s name he gave a false name but when one of our leaders’ son was arrested here in UK he boasted who he was.
When there's lawless and corruption that compromise the well being of a nation and it's security.Somalia is a good example of a such a nation. We have one of the highest number of people trying to get out of the country and that must say loads about our situation and we must every effort to put things right. It's within our our power but we must have the will to do it.

Ananda, I think you got it spot on. Afterall, everyone finds that Obama as a weakest of US presidents, so why not try their own agenda.

Like it or not Us had long before right royally screwed in at least three places, Afg, Pak, and Iraq. Obama is getting the harvest.

- Afg, where lunatics ruled, they failed to create a proper opposition from within. They jumped in, and now the afgans love lunatics over americans

- Pak, good old general was suppressing teh call for islamic state. Neo-liberal Us troubled their true ally until he stepped down. Enjoy now...

- Iraq was held from Islamic fundamentalism by none other than secular sadam. He even banned some religious acts in most gruesome ways suppressing them. And America found him in worng end. Now Iraq is inevitably heading towards Islamists. In 20 yrs, WOMD will truly be produced by Iraqi islamist govt using Sadam's facilities.

So now we have Norwegians making their way over remaining option for Obama too.

I wonder how much Iranian funding was involved in changing the winner. It looks like a last moment selection too.

October 9, 2009 01:47 pm

Sri Lanka’s Permanent Representative to the UN Dr. Palitha Kohona speaking at the UN said that after the defeat of the LTTE it has been discovered that their networks were being transferred to arms smuggling and drug trafficking on the international arena.

He further added that this development underlined the need for intelligence-sharing and joint operations among States. He stressed the importance of achieving global consensus on a comprehensive normative framework for international cooperation on terrorism.

He said this at the UN General Assembly Third Committee (Social, Humanitarian and Cultural) during the general debate on crime prevention, criminal justice and international drug control

Sri Lanka Insurance probed for funding LTTE

A number of well - known foreign and local business institutions operating in Sri Lanka, including private banks and financial institutions, are believed to have donated millions of rupees to the LTTE.
The police Terrorist Investigation Division (TID) has initiated investigations on these business establishments and the giant in the insurance industry, the Sri Lanka Insurance Corporation (SLIC) is a key suspect in this regard.
According to the TID, in 2005, SLIC has made large scale contributions to the North Eastern Development Organization, an NGO operated by the LTTE. The TID has already brought this to the notice of its managing director, Nalaka Godahewa.

/Tamil hunger strikers' condition deteriorates in London

[TamilNet, Friday, 10 April 2009, 02:36 GMT]

Two British Tamils, 21-year-old Sivatharsan Sivakumaravel and 28-year-old Parameswarn Subramaniyan, who are on a hunger strike in the Parliament Square since 10:00 p.m. Monday, have refused to consume any food or water until there is a ceasefire in Sri Lanka.

The main demand of the hunger strike is "immediate and permanent Ceasefire."

Thousands gathered around Parameswaran Subramaniyan's tent early Monday morning demanding the British Government to take immediate action against the carnage of Tamils in Sri Lanka to avoid another Tamil life being forsaken at Parliament Square in London, according to sources in London. Parameswaran, 28, on his 14th day of hunger strike, reiterated his calls to the British Government to impose for urgent ceasefire in Sri Lanka. Doctors by his side reported that his condition is critically weak. Dr Arundkumar Velauthapillai said "His condition is deteriorating rapidly. He is not taking enough water but he is stable for now."/

Ha Ha

/A Sri Lankan secretly ate McDonald's burgers while on a hunger-strike outside the British Parliament to highlight the plight of Tamils during war with the LTTE, it was revealed. According to The Daily Mail, Parameswaran Subramaniyan, 28, had eased his ordeal by eating burgers. The Scotland Yard surveillance teams using specialist monitoring equipment had watched in disbelief as he tucked into the clandestine deliveries./

Its amazing how these kazhuthais become eezhaam tamiz, sri lankans, sri lankan tamils, british tamils, diaspora youth time to time...

Parameswar and the £ 7.1 m, Big Mac.

We all knew the media and the MPs were taken for a ride. Check this clip. From start to 3:00 min and 4:00 min to 4:50min - Poor Simon Hughes.

During the fast, four doctors looked him after ( 4 doctors….. where have I heard that before …)

I found 3 names:

1) Dr Velauthapillai Arudkumar, one of four Tamil doctors monitoring Mr Subramaniam, said: "He is very weak and we are worried that he might slip into a coma in the next few days unless he takes some water. We keep asking him to drink but he simply refuses."
Audio link.

2) Dr Jayendran Namasivayah said: “When they started they didn’t have any medical support and then my daughter received a call from one of the organisers and so I offered to help.

3) During the protests, Dr Josephine Francis, consultant microbiologist at Queen Mary's Hospital in Sidcup, conducted blood and urine tests on Mr Subramaniyan. She warned he was on the brink of kidney failure through starvation.

Were they taken for a ride too??
Or have we been taken for a ride by all of them???

Well, now the BBC reports that the "Fasts Unto Death" by LTTE Diaspora protestors in front of the British Parliament in April, 2009 were entirely sustained on the nutritional strength of fast food, to be more precise McDonald's Big Macs!

I wonder how the British Parliamentarians who gave them support, and the three Tamil Doctors treating them and pronouncing "imminent kidney failure" of one faster Parameswaran Subramaniyan, feel now about the ride they were taken on!

Did they work hand-in-glove with the protesters to dupe the public too?

Underworld diminishing, Sri Lanka Police says

ColomboPage.com
October 8, 2009.

Oct 08, Colombo: Due to the operations conducted by the Sri Lanka Police in the recent past criminal acts by the underworld gangs and leaders are virtually fading away giving a sigh of relief to the public, police officials say.

Police officers behind these operations are well committed towards hunting for members of the underworld and many of them were killed in shoot outs, an official said.

According to the police, once the terrorism was eliminated from the country, the underworld, which had strong links with the LTTE earlier, started their secret operations to threaten the public and politicians. The criminals have made money by hijacking and selling vehicles to the LTTE, the police said.

Furthermore, I STRONGLY disagree with the notion that only "peace activists" preserve and protect lives and promote peace, but not those who engage in war to confront aggression. To my mind, Abraham Lincoln, and later Roosevelt & Churchill deserved the Peace Prize more than most who have been awarded it; yet among their greatest accomplishments was the defence of innocents through confronting aggressors MILITARILY!

Galle district pref top ranks: Muthuhettigama, Randima Gamage, Anarkali, Sajin, Shan.

hemantha said...

Sam,
He is being gradually sidelined. Things are murky because 'ponna samagama' and the 'koti samagama' together are using it to the hilt for their own political advantage. News are created and exaggerated by them (but based on some truth).

Gen SF was the greatest hero in our 30 year war against terrorism. I think it is time for him to seek some foreign employment. Foreign, defence related advisory jobs would queue upon him if he shows a slightest interest. That would save him from this political muddle.

Hemantha,

In our history, not only we have rewarded heroes like General Fonseka (Mahasenevi Gaardihewage Sarath Fonseka) who protected our motherland with land deeds, we have granted preemptive pardons to anybody descending from him from even from death sentence for three times. That is where General Fonseka stands today. Same goes to GR, WK, and RG. I am perplexed by others interest in pushing him towards politics against his will.

Sam/Hemantha;

I'm failing to compile a firm comment w/o concrete facts. Knowing that Lakbima is owned and articulated by a man whom I still believe as a UNP/Tiger covet operator whom contested under UPFA for western PC, I am seeing this news doubly vague. There can be 101 plots underneath this news.

Having said that, and despite some of my fellow patriot's vision on this, I find a diff MR after May 19th. And I feel [pure gut feeling] almost all his decisions after that were going the other way.

And we all know that the specialty of the victory was SF. MR/GR and ministers and secretaries etc stood with a backbone and backed up the operation. WK/RG cordinated in their ways. But the thinking brain and the chief architect is none other than SF. SF's brilliance, clarity of mind, great perception, anticipation and purity [not at all corrupted] are unmatched by [still great] likes of MR. So Sf should remain the special case he is. And he shud contribute for whatever many years he can.

Had he been fired this year, it will come after MR in more than one way.

And had this been for jealousy created on SF for 2010 campaign, as teh news suggests, oh hell, we all know it was initiated by a class A eelamist. Goodness me !!!that was a set plot, and what this news reveal is exactly what the plotters wanted.

Yet the extra-ordinary nature of this news and the evil bias of Lakbima makes me skeptical.

Sujeewa Kokawala said...

I always see MR as a strong man but void of opinion. I have seeing him from days of paa gaman and what I see is MR always needs an ideological frame to be borrowed. And once he does that he leads the gang and stands firm to get there.

Right now I sincerely fear that and evil gang has taken over this ideological drive of MR. Pardon me for repeating this for many weeks now. But I am failing to see the happenings of today, in a different way.

Mind you, with all isolation of exe pres role, and other zillion happenings it can happen to any good man.

Frankly - I'm sick and tired of others preventing me from going about my own business in my own country, and disfiguring the environment. Go somewhere else and protest!

how did he pass a university student exam, as I am damn sure english is one of the criteria to getting in and a visa

Isn't it time we found out how he managed to come to this country and flaunt his immigration status?
After all, his face must be well known to the Mitcham Police!

how can this person be studying in the UK and need and interpreter?????

He failed to attend lectures for a month or more, his action resulted in traffic jams around Westminster causing inconvenience to office workers, tourists and businesses alike and left us with a policing bill of a few million pounds. He did all the above on a student visa.

First, just to check I got it right, a student can have 24 days without going to college and can only talk English via an interpreter? So what is he actually studying?

All you comments about MR might be right. Also you might be right about MR going bad. But remember if it was not for MR, and his use of the Chinese connection, we would have never been able to complete this war. Not with the international pressure. SF could have been replaced by any other brilliant commanders we have (But of course not have won the war so quickly), but MR can not be replaced. I cannot think of some other politician who would have taken us to the completion of the war. Not with the kind of International pressure we got near the end of war.

Therefore the end of war is much a political victory rather than a military victory. I believe the architect of that is MR. The rest of the leaders, either used war for their advantage or backed down for various reasons.

Folks;

Let me retire from the debate of SF vs MR. Firstly we lack concrete facts. Secondly it is not a simple matter for casual discussion. Thirdly it is not a time for talking but watching.

Thusitha;

I may not agree with you mate. There was something unique about victory at ground level, and I am 100% sure no other military leader would achieve it. And that is my greatest fear too, when I take it in a futuristic way.

I never undermined the great work done by MR and his diplomatic generals, and of course GR.

BTW, I'm not a man who'd VOTE someone for WHAT HE DID. I believe that is a base minima for every voter. Gratitude is one thing future is another.

Hemantha;

We both feel worried, and it makes us write about this alleged tragedy we fear. But I think at this uncertain stage we both shud stop it and watch. We shud only write about it if our writing can stop such catastrophe or it has already happened and our writing has no impact. I hope you read me.

- Stop bashing his eating of the big mac.

- Stop talking about kicking him out of UK

- Stop all personal attack on P'maran

Because it wasn't his personal tactic. F**king pussycats did the same all over the world. If they did not, that was when they decided to kill the protester due to infighting. Otherwise how do they become fasting record holders?

Take the whole bloody mishmash of tamil/eelamist fasting. Think of Karunanidi, Tol Thirumalavan, US-tamil babe who fasted with vitamins on a schedule given by her physical trainer. And another 101 cases all over.

They all did cheating in diff ways.

So stop bashing P'waran personally and talk about the common hoodwinking, cheating and fake claims made by the tamil-eelamist/racist/separatist/diaspora elements.

If you do that general study you'll see how a student can do all those things. It wasn't his individual plan, but he was just a small part of the major plan.

I don't think this is good. When war was there I preferred to watch rather than criticize as I am no military expert. But any citizen has a right to criticize politics. And our writing may have an impact. The reason I m reluctant to discuss this issue is I have no reliable information other than rumors.

But then again what do these "salmon eating busy bodies" know about Peace!

Rather premature for Obama to win this coveted prize, but he wasn’t against worthy candidates. What has Obama done? (Is it strategic move?)
I'd rather see the NPP differed until a truly deserving contender earns it.
Devalues the concept, why award it every year if there are no worthy winners?

MR would have been a worthy contender had he not incarcerated 300k of his own citizens in “concentration” camps, allowed independent observers and media to report on the war and camp conditions to counter allegations of human rights violations and not taken the “raised sarong” mode against any local and international critics. Cie la vie..

What a waste of tax payers money and inconvenience to the traveling British public but then why would a toilet cleaning tax exile in Monaco complain about the wastage of a “politically correct” British establishment.

SL PM comments to Hilary- I'm sorry does he know the difference between Rape and consenting adults? Or were these comments for local consumption. Stool pigeon

Kevin’s comments vis a vis lack of common sense and principles.

It all stems from the caliber of politicians and their capabilities.
Everybody "Tom Dick and Harry," wants to be a politician in SL. It's easy money
Value of life, money, human dignity, and respect has been lost for votes!
It goes back possibly to JR or Premadasa's time when politicians can be bought for money "screw" principles. There have been more crossovers that one can imagine purely to please owns pocket. MR has made it worse (by his own insecurity) by having over 130 ministers and “carte blanche” and fleecing the country whilst the hard working lankans suffer in silence.
No doubt we will hear about all the corrupt dealings that went on, on his ‘watch” after he is gone. Isn’t that always the case? Lankans have very short memories!

MR decision to appoint SF as Sports Ministry Secretary. An insult to SF and the intelligence of Lankans. A typical knee jerk reaction that proves MR is slowly losing it or feeling very insecure. I’d rather see SF appointed to a “law and order” Ministerial position with unfettered authority to clean up the corrupt police, judiciary and internal security (including miscreant ministers).
His vision, determination and foresight will be lost if MR or any other leader is unable to grasp his skill sets.

GSP +
This concession was never going to be long term. Granted after the Tsunami to give a helping hand to the apparel industry.
Regrettably, the EU and GOSL have started playing a game with each other to the detriment of the industry.
Most “savvy” apparel companies (eg MAS) have diversified and formed joint ventures in India, China and Japan knowing the “hand outs” will not last.
It’s about time the apparel industry stand up on its own feet and compete on an international level without depending on handouts
GSP + , I believe will be granted but phased out by 2011.

This comment implies that the past history of a man, has little or no bearing on how he will act in the future.

On the contrary, the past activity and performance of a person is the best indicator we have of how he/she will ACT and PERFORM in the future, and of his/her ABILITY to so ACT and so PERFORM in the future.

That is why, all of us diligently polish our RESUME'S, because people rely on our past performance to predict our future performance, and ask for our resume's before they trust us in some capacity.

And it is also precisely for that reason, that if we find a person with a good RESUME, we are PATIENT with that person, and are TOLERANT of mistakes, because we have EVIDENCE of the person's good CHARACTER and excellent ABILITIES which we VALUE HIGHLY!

In short, lacking a divining stick that allows us to predict the FUTURE, we rely on PAST performance, grounded in the belief that people don't change radically in CHARACTER and ABILITY with time.

There are, of course, exceptions, to every rule, and to every belief.

One last note on SF.
Some suggest here that SF could have been replaced but not MR. Not quite correct. Non of the above two (and roles played by them) could have been replaced by others under the prevalent situation at that time. They were unique in their own fields. SF was a great general even before 2005 presidential election. He was fighting against politicians to save high security zones in 2002. He was fighting on the front line to save Jaffna in 1998 and was successful in both instances. But without MR he would have been a retired great general now (Which was bound to happen around the end of 2005). Even if he wasn't retired under a president like Ranil(Thank you god for preventing that) his resolve and courage would have been useless. But without him Mahinda wouldn't have had the courage to continue on. SF never wavered from his belief on our ability to defeat terrorism and fortunately his point of view prevailed in the security council(specially during the harder times of the war). With somebody else in that position, like earlier Commanders of Army the war would have been dragged on. The political leadership would have ended up with no option.

Two last suggestions:
1. MR can rectify the situation by giving him the post of "Inspector General of Police". He will clean up the Police Force.(I honestly do not know weather the politicians would like this idea or not)And he won't be a threat either. (Even a civilian can hold this post. There is a precedence during the SWRD Bandaranayaka time)

2. SF should leave the country honorably and seek a job elsewhere. He could fight with terrorists and win. But he won't have a chance against politicians (many Kitchen sinks can be expected in such a scenario).

The first, almost impossible. The second, looks most probable to me.

Wow!

What the media failed to report was this was a reciprocal agreement. She had agreed to let the Sri Lanka Army’s Vanni commander “unfettered access” to her “other parts – that were not opened to others so far – as well” ….it remains to be seen if the SLA commander took her up on this offer…although, I doubt very much as our SLA boys are well known to have minimum standards when bartering a deal!

Yes, the sovereign proud nation of Sri Lanka owes no obligation to these LTTE supporting JOKER bastards/bitches from ToiletNadu and any unfettered access (Gosh, I love that term!) must be strictly done on a fair and equitable exchange basis…as such, alas, it is doubtful whether we will have a deal.

Anyway this is my clarification on that. He is my hero. He did so much for the country. Yes, he can do much more. But I am not sure he will get the opportunity. Jonathan Kay: Giving Barack Obama the Nobel peace prize is ridiculous
What seems clear from all this bafflegab is that Mr. Obama is being given his award for mere words — for striking fashionable poses in favour of multilateralism, for making a nice speech in Cairo, for offering “hope.” Months after Americans learned to dismiss Mr. Obama’s 2008 presidential campaign slogans as the bromides they were, Scandinavians apparently are still drinking his Kool-aid.

So who should have gotten the Nobel peace prize?

Instead of droning on about “hope” and “a new international climate,” a group of people charged with awarding an annual peace prize might find it useful to focus on a more mundane and obvious inquiry. To wit: What part of the planet was beset by bloody war in 2008, but is now entirely at peace?

The only nation that fits the bill is Sri Lanka. And the reason for that is a ruthless military campaign waged by President Mahinda Rajapaksa against a militarized Tamil death cult known as the Tamil Tigers. This conflict has taken nearly 100,000 lives since it began three decades ago. But Rajapaksa ended it definitively at one stroke, killing or capturing virtually the entire Tiger leadership. It is one of the only times in the history of modern warfare that a guerrilla/terrorist movement has been utterly destroyed in such a fashion. Overnight, war became a stranger to Sri Lanka.

Sounds like a pretty good candidate for a “peace” prize, don’t you think?

But of course, actually making peace is not what this nominal peace prize is about. It’s about going through the motions of pursuing peace in a touchy-feely UN-approved way.
Mr. Rajapaksa has done some fairly nasty things en route to destroying the Tigers — including imprisoning and perhaps even killing pesky journalists and human-rights activists. More importantly (from a Scandinavian point of view), Mr. Rajapaksa committed an unpardonable foreign-policy sin en route to his victory: flouting “multilateralism.” Which is to say that he ignored the bien pensant voices from abroad urging him to let the Tigers go just as the Sri Lankan military was about to administer the coup de grace. Had he listened, the war would continue to this day.

Let's compare the results so far with my prediction...

My prediction:

Galle: UPFA 70+%, UNP 25-%, JVP 5%
Matara: UPFA 75+%, UNP 20-%, JVP 5%
H'tota: UPFA 70+%, UNP 20-%, JVP 10%

Result:

Galle: UPFA 68%, UNP 27%, JVP 4%
Matara: UPFA 68%, UNP 26%, JVP 5.5%
H'tota: UPFA 67%, UNP 22%, JVP 11%

I was slightly over estimating UPFA in Galle and H'tota [by 2% and 3%] and really over estimating [by 7%] in Matara. Equal % under-estimates for UNP and my predictions about JVP more or less tallies with actual result.

Let us see what the result is saying...

This is not really a pure victory for UPFA, there is much to ponder than celebrate. Public of South have protected teh govt that did the great service, yet passed a warning with the result [I always have great respect to them, not because I have relationships, but because they have always been a political becon for the nation]. UPFA % which was predicted as 80%+ was brought below 70%. In H'tota where MR actually did a great development like never before, public is still skeptical about somethings.

I think MR should read the hidden message more than the praise in it. His candidates behaved a level low - like cats and dogs. Fighting with one another making comic statements, threatening the party members, using thugs, show-off and arrogance [Sajin Vaas], and many many other mean ways. And of course the intimidation on opposition. It made UPFA party members feeling disgusted, and discouraged some from voting, whereas it encouraged UNPers to whole-heartedly vote their members. Note taht there had been a reserved UNP lot who never voted against MR for their love to country. UPFA goons woke them up this time.

Plus the selections. The seeni bola politics which was trade mark of RW was copied by MR. And RW, to my surprise did not make a single stupid statement thru-out the campaign, but MR not only selected hillarious candidates, but also his ministers kept on broadcasting blatent stupidity. UNP for the first time forwarded a good bunch of candidates lead by good deep rooted politicians. In addtion, for the first time we felt the dogma and neglegence of govt, instead of its humble and caring past.

Hon MR, the post election days leave you with more thinking than pre-election, if you're a futuristic President.

I agree that future is an extrapolatiion of past. But there are times one can get deceived and deviate. In SL politics, a slight deviation of Exe pres may impact the country heavily.

I don't like to take on MR in a bad way, and my postings about him, the criticizes are primarily to convey it to system, and in a direct path to those who matter.

We're going towards an undefined future. Although war was hard it was homogenious plan categorically [although its internals had several einstein loads of thinking]. But the remaining future is so non-deterministic that anyone can define anything as right. It depends more on who your allies are than what you think of it [in my view].

In simple terms, winning war does not mean to me that MR would save us from the up and coming new trends of terrorist/separatist movement. I am worried, for the moment, and sure you can call it a meaningless fear. I have no arguments to prove me right as at now. A pure feeling of fear and insecurity.

It is a touchy topic, so let's not make us feel bad with one another. I understand the sentiments of both sides surely.

What are we talking about here? A mere news paper article [in a paper used for political campaigns of an individual, whose politics by all means not clean at all].

There is NO better or deserving role for great general than being the top seater of the future security planning. He has a mammoth job at hand. We were ~10 yrs lagging, he shud make us 10 yrs futuristic. I have full faith he can do that.

He needs not to purify thugs police or politicians. Such acts are harder than many believe. Their culprits are within the system. Not easy to eliminate. SL shud find her own ways to improve these, and we need to have patience. Although we won war in 3 years, that does not mean many other systems can be put in right place so easily.

SF needs not to worry about those. He never did. He shud and will continue as CDS.

Let us leave it, w/o letting it make further pre-cooked comments on an uncertain allegation, which has no current footing. Let's re-open it only something bad happens, like MR not extending SF [I believe both of you agree that it is a worthy moment to discuss the topic].

Otherwise, adios on this topic from me. If that renders us jobless, let's have a bigmac. :)

I've never seen Bhanuka Rajapakse of SL U19 cricket team batting at a strike rate below 100, in any form of game. I like that attitude. Bhanuka's 154 in 111 balls in a run chase in a hostile Aus pitch, suggests me that we're gonna see him soon in national outfit.

Once we saw a similar skill in SL youth cricket in late 80s who'd score 200 out of 300+ score of his side in a couple of eye blinks. Having followed his cricket from then till now, the giant master blaster Sanath makes me proud of every moment of following his cricket.

Wish Bhanuka a great future.

Friends,

The details of the Graduation Class of 2009 in Engineering at University of Sri Lanka at Peradeniya was released recently.

To figure out how things have changed since I was a student at the EFac, I entered the data in an Excel spreadsheet and analyzed the performance of the students by discipline (see below).

The size of the graduating class has increased by about 50 students over 1969. CE, ME and EE were the three largest disciplines in 1969 when ranked according to the number of students, whereas in 2009, the order is CE, EE, CO, ME, PR, CH with computer engineering moving ahead of ME. CE is, by far, the largest field with 43.3% of students, but has fewer students that the rest of the disciplines. This is to be expected, because most engineers were CE's employed by Govt in 1969, with fewer jobs in govt for EE's and ME's then, with virtually no demand for engineers in private industry. That situation has changed significant for the better sine then.

These statistics also reflect the changes in the economy from one geared to producing services and goods for local consumption, to one more dependent of producing goods for the export market, with increased demand for engineers by the private industry serving those markets.

Given that Sri Lanka must grow its economy by competing in the Global Marketplace, we will see the trend towards producing engineers belonging to the disciplines that serve that segment of the economy (i.e., EE, CO, and ME) accelerate in the future.

Performance of the students within traditional disciplines of CE, ME and EE reflect the same patterns I saw in 1969: ME seems to be the most difficult discipline in which to shine with students having difficulty in gaining 2nd Class Upper Division and First Classes. Then, CE's obtained comparatively better results in exams than in the other two disciplines, and the great majority of the students (~80%)followed the CE curriculum. Very interestingly, this seems to have changed, with a significantly larger fraction of EE's doing very well with nearly a quarter of the students getting First Classes.

One difference from the late 1960's I saw was the very small number of students who got Passes (4.5%) and the comparatively very large number of First Classes (12.4%). In the late 1960's it was very difficult to get a First Class, and 41 students out of 330 getting First Classes was unheard of then.

Investors reap peace dividend in Sri Lanka

By Amal Jayasinghe (AFP) – 5 hours ago

COLOMBO — Sri Lanka's small stock exchange has become one of the world's top performing bourses as investors reap the peace dividend from the end to the island's bloody ethnic conflict.

Investors are banking on renewed economic strength and profits in the country that emerged in May from a bloody and protracted civil war which claimed between 80,000 and 100,000 lives over nearly four decades.

"All the economic indications are in the right direction but the end of the war has been the key factor" in the market's performance, said Shivantha Meepage, analyst at Acuity Stockbrokers in the capital Colombo.

Tourism-related stocks have been faring particularly well on the back of expectations that more foreign holidaymakers will visit the country's golden sandy beaches, picturesque tea-growing mountains and ancient heritage sites.

Infrastructure-related shares have also been performing strongly on the back of plans by the government to rebuild Sri Lanka's war-ravaged northeast.

The positive news has helped make the stock market Asia's best performer and just behind Peru's Lima in the global stock market rankings.

So far this year, the All Share Price Index (ASPI) has recorded a 110 percent increase after sliding 41.57 percent last year, when government forces and Tamil separatists were locked in what seemed an unwinnable war.

"The ASPI is one of the best performing indices in the world," said Tushara Jayaratne, Business Development Manager of the Colombo Stock Exchange.

But with daily turnover a relatively paltry 10 million dollars, it's still a dot on the global map for most investors. In fact, nine billion dollars could buy all the 238 companies listed on the bourse.

"For all the good news, Sri Lanka is still a tiny speck for a big-time foreign investor," said Channa Amaratunga, director at CT Capital, an investment advisory company.

The Central Bank of Sri Lanka just raised its growth forecast for 2009 to 4.5 percent from an earlier estimate of 2.5 percent, bolstering investor hopes of stronger economic activity.

A sharp fall in interest rates is also routing more money into equities, analysts say.

"The economic outlook is better since the war ended," said CT Capital's Amaratunga.

Many people who have put money in the market are small investors and analyst Mahesh Peiris, a director at Asia Securities, says there is "a strong element of speculation" in the bull run.

Sri Lanka's separatist Tamil Tigers took up arms in 1972, five years before the country ended a socialist-style system to become the first in South Asia to embrace a free-market economy.

An unprecedented 2.6-billion-dollar IMF bailout for Sri Lanka recently also galvanised hopes that the country may be on the road to recovery.

Sri Lanka's annual inflation rate was running at a record low of 0.7 percent in September, official data showed.

"Investors seem to be betting on an economy without war and they are also hoping that inflation and interest rates will be lower," said Asantha Sirimanna, the head of Lanka Business Online, a top financial web portal.

Engineering graduates should not be made to laboriously search for jobs. It's a disgrace to them.
That's what has happened to the pera EE batch this year. Usuallly these guys found immediate employment since graduating.
Given time i'm optimistic that many will get jobs but it's not good to have telecommunication/electronic/electrical graduates in such a position as they are now. They have studied so hard over the years both during A/L and university and now they are having a hard time finding employment.

Mahen said...

Also we at EFT do not agree with this socialist / communist policy of the government giving jobs to every Tom, Dick and Harry graduate. If Sri Lanka wants to be a free market economy, then the realities must be accepted, i.e., jobs are available where the skills are in short supply, its upto the A/L students to decide what discipline to study for after carefully researching what the market needs. The government is going out of their way to provide free, first education to the populace, what country in the world does that, and these guys want the government to provide them jobs too, this cradle to grave attitude must stop if we are to succeed.

Mahen said...

Sujith, don't get us wrong, we sympathise with the plight of the graduates, its cruel not to do so, we undertand the hardships faced getting into Uni, some of us have being through that. but BR is more ambitious than GR. BR MAY BE worried that SF would be more popular than him WHEN IT COMES TO POLITICS although SF has shown NO interst in politics yet.

if BR continues to WASTE time and money in developing the north WITHOUT colonisation, he will lose both the south and the north. BTW he has no real political capital in the south. he may get into parliament thanks to his brothers but that cannot take him any further.

for some reason ppl in the north NEVER voted for development. they prefer race-based politics to development. i don't know why. higher the development, more the shoft towards racial aspirations.

e.g. dutch times
british times
1970s
2002-2004 (DAMN disaster for those who waited for the northerners to have SOME gratefulness at the elections!!!)

IF BR creates a loyal votebase in the north without colonisation, i will stop blogging.

Sajith;

In your opinion, what exactly is the prob. In truth there are not many vacancies in industry with the impact of melt down in west. Every company has become conservative. But I hope you guys did a good try with whatever vacancies available in papers. Also the companies that came to uni.

I am with the belief that most of the guys in COl uni and Mora are occupied. Pls correct me if wrong. In that case it would be worthwhile to find how they get through [as I can 100% assure that uni favoring no longer exists in IT, except for one or two minor places]

In SL, there are only two main stream sectors for Tronics, computer and IT chaps. They are telecom and SW development. [Of course there is a wide range of other options at smaller scale. But they do not provide a consistent number of opportunities annually].

Telecom sector has few mobile vendors, SLT etc. I believe they are more affected with crisis. SW sector is not dying but has become conservative. There was a time they hired ppl for "possible" new projects next yr. That is how most uni kids got jobs upon grad. But now industry can't take that risk.

I understand that it is very bad students are kept out upon completion w/o jobs. I sincerely understand the plight. But the ground reality is there is no "central body" to control that. So whatever happens in industry as at now, you guys gotta learn its trends and adapt to it. That is the only way as at now. [I didn't mean there are no other ways theoretically. But not existing]

Ananda;

SL's industry needs the investments and entrepreneurship from their expats. Like India did, SL will blossom in technology if it happens. It is some thing we shud promote among expats. Even in discussions like this.

It does not have to have their own money. It can be some negotiated investor whom they can convince into the entrepreneurship. It shud not go as pure charity. It shud be a win win for all, i.e. every party making their dreams come true.

I can provide nice cases where some expats started with just a project or two with the view of hiring 2-5 team members in the annex of his old house, and now occupying several floors in a city sky scraper. And of course some v good research companies.

Like war we're proud of these companies, which is almost all a creation of SL entrepreneurship.

The morale of this little bot is to pass the message around. Pls invest in SL. Let your creativity and links you have there to best use. It will be something you'll also benefit, and make your beloved motherland benefit a lot.

Mahen,
I get your point. But your fears are unfounded. Nobody is asking for government jobs nor are they going to engage in civil disobedience! These are engineers!! The problem i wanted to highlight was that they have to face a tough laborious process to find employment. Probably they may be able to find jobs in other sectors or lesser paying jobs pretty easily but that wasn't what they want after doing a very hard electronic/telecom/electrical engineering course. The electronic/telecom/electrical sector should in theory have the highest demand.
Btw i applaud you for your great misinformation campaign that took guys like peter, bhairav, thiru and co on a wild goose chase.

In 2005 i met a US-Indian gentleman, CEO of a very succesful IT/Software Co based in Frisco on a flight from Amsterdam.
He was on his way to India to "Induct" over 50 soon to graduate students from IIT (Kanpur, Madras and Delhi). This, he tells was the third year of recruitment. He was keen to get the best crop before Indian IT giants like Infosys take the cream.
I enquired from him why does he not go to SL on this recruitment drive as there are more than capable graduates.
He gave me two reasons
1)Unable to converse fluently in English unlike the Indian graduates.
2)Indian graduates always return home after a stint in US and work for the company from India.Whilst SL graduates jump ship as soon as they arrive in US.

There was also another reason. He himself was a product of IIT recruited by a US company.

I'm perplexed why SL graduates dont get the same opporunities from US-Lankan run companies (eg American Reprographics Co, Galleon Group) or UK Lankan Companies. (eg Rodel Group)

No .. I don't know who Sujith is other than he is a blogger at DW and that he seems to be a young engineer from SL. That could be a cover as you seem to imply. He has not said anything that is crucial to, or against, SL's survival.

I have batchmates who are now heads of engineering departments at universities in SL; I can very easily verify Sujith's information with a few emails.

On the other hand, I know good jobs are hard to find for graduates in SL; a situation likely to be alleviated by the ongoing recruitment of CE's primarily for development work in the North and East.

Sujith's response only generated an appeal from me directed to patriots to do what they can to generate businesses and growth in SL. That has always been, and continues to be, an increasingly urgent objective of mine.

Controversy over Norwegian Peace Prize for Obama – Was it for his role in the Sri Lankan Conflict?

Dr.P.A.Samaraweera, Australia
President Obama created history by becoming the first black-American President of the USA. He was also the first black-American to edit the Harvard Law Journal. Now according to critics, he has made history by winning the Norwegian Nobel Peace Prize for having not done anything. This stunning choice has shocked Nobel observers.

President Obama himself had been surprised and his comment was, ” To be honest, I do not feel that I derserve to be in the company of so many of the transformative figures who have been honoured by this prize”.

According to some as this most prestigious award has not been given on any of his accomplishments there is a debate on this controversial issue.

For example, with regard to his efforts on reducing nuclear war-heads there had been only negotiations on this. Secondly, he wanted to end the Iraq war but so far there are no signs of this. Instead, he had increased the number of soldiers sent to Iraq. Then the war in Afghanistan had escalated. Thirdly, not much can be said about his push for peace between Israel and Palestine. Fourthly, he has been trying to mend fences with US foes like Iran, North Korea and Cuba but there had been not much progress. Finally, he had pledged to take the lead against climate change but so far he had not got much support from China and India.

So there is a shock and awe over the award of this Norwegian Nobel Prize.

Neutral observers are wondering if this Nobel Peace Prize for President Obama was awarded for the US efforts to stall the Sri Lankan war against the LTTE terrorists? Towards the end of the war the US brought pressure on Sri Lanka and urged for a cease fire. The US marines offered to rescue the LTTE leaders. The LTTE leadership offered to surrender to the US or to one of its allies. Thus the US made desperate attempts to give cover to the LTTE terrorists.

On the other hand Norway which prides itself on the Nobel Peace Prize had been supporting the LTTE through out in the guise of peace-brokers. During the last stages of the war LTTE supporters attacked the Sri Lankan Embassy in Oslo but the Norwegian government kept silent and did nothing to apprehend the perpetrators of this criminal act.

Subsequently, it had been reported that Norway had been constantly communicating with Kumaran Pathmanathan who was the Overseas LTTE leader. The Sri Lankan government expressed its concern over this communication. Thus because of this dubious approach by Norway the Sri Lakan government terminated Norway’s role as facilitator.

Thus Norway and the US had been working hand in glove to inject oxygen to the LTTE leadership. Therefore, the question asked is whether Norway awarded the Nobel Peace Prize to President Obama for his role in the Sri Lankan conflict, which would have been a disaster for Sri Lanka after 30 years of terrorism!

I can see a typical CONspiracy theory developing from here...

LTTE paid the 5 "salmon eating busy bodies" in the NPP committee to award the prize to Obama for his relentness efforts to stall the Sri Lankan war against the LTTE terrorists (sic).
That not being successful, US, Obama Admin files a report (which conveniently is delayed until after the award) against Rajapakse cabal for human rights abuses to appease the LTTE.

Yako Somapala! Make that a large one on the rocks...

Jay, my dear poor fellow,

Is there something you can do about your hiccuping affliction? It seems to affect your writing too.

Try a strong laxative. Failing that, you could try super gluing your hand across the mouth .. that should suppress it .. I think!

I hate to see you suffering like this! :)
