Sit Rep 31 Oct 2009

A cautionary note on the present situation re Gen Fonseka. Our task was to allow things to settle down on their own which has worked. However, recent developments led particularly by a section of the diaspora Sinhalese is a cause of concern for DefenceWire.

DefenceWire team's stance up to now has been to avoid commenting on this dispute knowing fully well the capacity of both the present government and SF to come to a compromise on:

1. The direction the Sri Lankan Military will take
2. The direction General Fonseka would have to go

These may not be the most ideal directions for either, yet they are ones that are at best described as realistic and unavoidable.

There are many moves by politically motivated Sri Lankans, including Sinhala groups and also non Sinhala Sri Lankan groups to exploit a disagreement that has unnecessarily spilled over into the public's eye due to politics in the military and a very small section of the military in politics.

These groups, particularly those civilians involved who are not insiders or have little inside information can or will not understand the discipline of a professional soldier to take what he wants and to relinquish duty when required sans insubordination.

A professional soldier is not Dutugemunu. The Sri Lanka Army/Military is a modern Army/Military positioned within a democratic society. The professional soldiers serving in it will know when to let go. By asking them to perform a larger role based solely on selfish motives of individuals in the periphery, they may destroy that soldier and even themselves and their reputation.

The Sri Lankan Military and its leaders are now hailed the world over for their victorious feat. Their role in bringing peace to the country through military means will be remembered for decades to come as the ultimate example of a trained military executing its sacred task flawlessly from start to finish. But remember this, dear readers, military action is a means of achieving the end and the end is always political.

DefenceWire, as an impartial site whose work you have witnessed for over 3 years now wish to appeal to our readers to refrain from joining or supporting either 'camps' and to allow the professional soldier and professional politicians to resolve potentially resolvable issues mentioned above.

Thank you

Thanks. You must be a blatant fool to call me a Guru. Never heard from else where but pls keep it up.

[[ Sir where is the percentages, formulas and predictions.]]

If you see %s numbers etc, and you disagree, I'd rather say that you shud counter them. I believe numbers [right/wrong] is a way of analyzing some event.

What I do here won't won't be changed on what you say, sadly. Maybe you should shoot Lincoln.

[[You must be the most intelligent creature ever walked on the earth.]]

As long as blatant fools of your make prowl in blogs and make comments worthy of no conversation, YES I agree with that perception. But for most others, I'm an average man.

Freddie Silva once sang a god advice for you in one of his songs. Song is called "Pan Kiriththa". Let me extract the relevant part.

Punish LTTE supporters severely: Union Minister

November 30, 2009 01:28 am

Union Minister V. Narayanasamy today called for stringent punishment to individuals and organisations supporting the banned LTTE in Tamil Nadu and Puducherry.

“The authorities concerned should take stringent action against any individual or organisations supporting the LTTE in Tamil Nadu and Puducherry,” the Minister of State for Planning, Parliamentary Affairs and Culture told reporters here.

He condemned the petrol bomb attack on the house of former Union minister and Congress leader E.V.K.S. Elangovan here on Friday. Three persons of a little known pro-Eelam outfit were arrested in this connection.

Petrol bombs were hurled on the residence of Elangovan, a strident LTTE critic. The attack came after he had torn down posters and banners eulogising slain LTTE founder V. Prabhakaran on his birth anniversary at Erode on the day.

Elangovan was not present during the attack. But some furniture was damaged. – (PTI)

Statement: There was no proper army leadership until he became the General.

Indication: Political leadership was there in all these years but what lacking was right army leadership.

"I am the only right leadership; no one else could/can do the job. Political leadership was there but no right Army leadership. So MR's political leadership helped but it was not that crucial. Ranil would have done it if he were there as the General. CBK would have done it if he were the General.

But CBK did not appoint him as the General. Ranil transferred him out of Jaffna. So there was no right political leadership.

MR has only one card and that is the WAR Card to play this PE game. Unfortunately that also in SF's hand.

Don't try to attack or criticize SF with the help of few words available in the web.

SF has 100% confident that he will win this election.

Read between the lines.

Swarnajith Udana said...

Mangala was 1000% certain that the UNP would win all the PC elections.

We 10000% know that it happened exactly as the results were predicted by UNP.

Am I saying MR will win?

No, I cannot say that. It is the likely result( by a big margin) at this moment, though.

This could change either way.

But unlikely.

It is more likely that some UNP
top guns will secretly campaign against SF.

Also there may be some MPs in the Government who are ready to change the ship in the unlikely case that MR looses.

That is the sordid nature of politics. It is (in the case Government MP's) about stomach not about principles.

Consider this:

IF the UNP did not loose its credibility so badly then so many (out side the Government) would have looked into the possibility of SF having the remote control of the abductions and murders of journalists.

If the accusation made by UNP is correct, SF, Government and UNP are all responsible for this disaster of having a murderer for the General

AT least the Government had an 'excuse' They claimed to have a single focus of defeating LTTE. (Still I do not approve it).

Now even the Sunday Leader is serenading SF. The UNP is trying to make a murderer ( if the accusations were sincere and true) the next President of the country and every UNP top gun is serenading the murderer.

SF paid homage to Lasantha. (I vehemently opposed the killing of Lasantha even though his actions were so treacherous. This does not mean that all of his investigative reports were false but he was not the journalist saint he was painted to be.)

About paying homage to Lasantha by SF there is no "any if true"

Do you not believe that MR has started lots of infrastructure development such as roads, harbors, power stations, irrigation projects city building [for the first time in SL] etc.

Do you not think that ppl will be so foolish to ignore them. Especially considering the fact that such started happening after Premadasa days. One big criticism against CBK and RW was that they never did anything of that sort.

I understand there is a lot of criticism over these projects, but I'm just asking, do you think the projects are not happening at all?

[[Don't try to attack or criticize SF with the help of few words available in the web]]

His own words - nothing more.

I will not support someone who'd give something MORE THAN 13th amendment for sure. Now this, even taught by his traitor clan, is a new low, bigger than taking part in the traitor lot.

[[SF has 100% confident that he will win this election]]

So does likes of RW, JVP etc on their behalf. Not even them but also, Wikarabahu, Siddalepa mudalali etc too.

I pity this kinda arguments.

[[Read between the lines.]]

Stripes are between most lines of SF. It was written in the memo books gifted by LTTE to Mano Gonason when he attended Ponna Thamil Festivals.

B#1,

There were OTHER FAMILIES that led Sri Lanka in the past: The Senanayake's, the Bandaranaike's, and the Premadasa's, for example.

Each of these distinguished families did much good, some bad, and failed in some ways.

But, most of them failed to confront and reunify the country, and lay the foundation for growing the economy rapidly, as the MR-GOSL has.

Let us not be JEALOUS of the Rajapaksa Family, but be GLAD that they were there to take up the fallen Lion Flag and raise it high above our collective heads when we needed such leaders. Family leadership is a historical tradition in our country; so why bemoan it .. especially when they are ABLE? Would you have said the same thing about Kavan Tissa's two sons DutuGamunu and SaddhaTissa, also?

In times of great uncertainty, distrust and internal and external threats, is it not natural to rely on one's own SIBLINGS as the pillars of your own survival, and of your country? Do we not KNOW that the MR-GR-BR brothers worked SEAMLESSLY and EFFECTIVELY to defend and protect the Motherland in the past few years? Why, oh why, do we try to tear them down for the sake of a fleeting political expediency?

Let us not give any credence to the INCURABLY JEALOUS new-politician SF who is on a personal and political vendetta against the Rajapaksa clan.

MR had a very small majority in parliament, to fight and win a war with. He kept that majority together with a variety of strategies, including giving a Ministerships to everyone who wanted one. If he had the 2/3 majority, THAT HE IS NOW ASKING THE PEOPLE TO GIVE HIM, he would not have had to do that. Yet, astonishingly, he kept the government whole, confronted internal and external enemies and won the war. Give him that 2/3 majority, and he will dismantle ALL OF THESE STRATEGIES he adopted to maintain a STABLE GOVERNMENT in the throes of a war of national survival.

Given our history of how the SEPARATISTS and ANTI-SL FORCES always used the tactic of SPLITTING THE SINHALA VOTE down the middle to prevent a military victory, and frustrate the economic resurgence of Sri Lanka, is it not quite ASTONISHING what the MR-GOSL achieved?

Now, unfortunately, SF is LEADING THE CHARGE of the Anti-SL forces to again SPLIT THE SINHALA VOTE DOWN THE MIDDLE, and bring back the bad old days of governmental instability and impotence. They are using EVERY FALSEHOOD and DEVIOUS TACTIC to do that, as we see here at the DW blog.

BLINDED by jealousy, and personal ambition, Sarath Fonseka has fallen into the trap laid for him by these separatists and nti-SL forces.

Let us, you and I.. my friend, NOT FALL INTO THAT SAME YAWNING TRAP!

Let us keep the WELFARE of OUR beloved Motherland foremost in OUR thoughts, and NOTHING ELSE!

'Et tu Brute'- The inside story

(By: Special Correspondent )

The following article is an in-depth analysis of the grand-strategic-level virtues that led the island nation into a feat which was once defined un-winnable; a distant goal. The writer provides us with a glimpse of an insight into a vision made real, a mission achieved......

A leader is a leader only when he has a team and a mission to be shared with his team. The inseparable bond between the leader, team and the mission is fundamental to all leaders whether he is a ring leader or a national leader. What makes one a national leader, is the nobility of his mission. He who wants to be a national leader must commit himself to a mission that benefits the whole nation. When a leader detaches himself from the mission as well as from his team and decides to follow a path leading to self serving purposes, his leadership comes to an end.

Unfortunately in this country, we have seen many leaders once respected by all were later reduced to mere disrespectful figures because of power politics. The reason is quite clear if one looks closely how things had transpired in the lives of such ill-fated leaders. It is the replacement of a noble mission with self serving one. The saddest part of their stories is that most of them have met their fate because they let others to exploit their weaknesses and to drag them blindfolded to make wrong decisions. The pandemonium about General Sarath Fonseka coming into politics as the common presidential candidate can also be seen in that context, perhaps among many other views.

The writer of this article is neither a great fan of General Fonseka nor a panegyrist of the Government. Yet, he was a key role player of a unit, though little known to public, provided a very valuable service to the team that rescued the nation from horrors of terrorism.

He uses the word TEAM, with a great emphasis because the whole operation that brought the victory to the Motherland was indeed a team game that no one can claim individual credit. It was a perfect combination of individual competencies synergized by a compelling vision that transpired beyond self serving needs. It was a battle worth fighting for, an opportunity to reach the highest self-efficacy, and a fulfilling of duty of the manhood. It was fought for the future generation, our children, to give them the peaceful, terror - free country that we had not seen during our childhood.

This effort is not to find fault with General Fonseka or to question his right to compete for the presidential election. The writer truly wishes that he would never have to pen this out. This is written out of desperation knowing the dire implication that would be caused on the Armed Forces, and the whole nation by a single wrong assumption made either by General Fonseka or by the citizens of this country. The victory over terrorism is certainly not General Fonseka's individual achievement.

Ananda-USA said...

Et Tu Brute'

.....continued 1....
Thus, no soldier, sailor, or airman, in this country wants to be a political football to be kicked over and over by selfish politicians. This effort is purely to prove with the facts why one should not betray such a great team that he was once part of, purely because of selfish objectives. If he does so, he is not only betraying the noble mission, but also desecrating the sacrifices made by all in accomplishing the mission.

As mentioned earlier, the humanitarian operation that brought freedom to the country was a team game. Yet, contributions made individually, certainly have their differences. Principally, there are four levels of contributions can be identified as the core success factors of the whole operation; 1. The President and the Commander in Chief, 2. The Secretary Defence, 3. The Service Commanders, and 4. The Servicemen. All these levels were equally important but unique in the way that they helped the success of the mission.
Servicepersons

If one needs an answer to the question: who fought the battle? Clearly it is the brave men in our Armed Service. It was them who fought the actual battle but not the President, Defence Secretary or the Service Commanders. Even General Fonseka never travelled beyond Vanni (Vavuniya) and Jaffna (Palali) headquarters throughout the operation, except for ceremonial occasions. Therefore, if it was not for their commitment for the mission, strong discipline and valour that made them fighting selflessly, none of those who try to claim ownership for the victory could be seen around today.

However, it should be not forgotten that these Servicemen had been fighting the enemy for over 20 years without success. Even Three Service Commanders and the Defence Secretary were once in the frontlines. What made our Forces to show a dramatic change in their performance within just three years? The answer to that question is something that all discernible citizens of this country must know without doubt. Yet, the answer would come with the sad truth that all Sri Lankans have to admit; our Forces were always with the ability to defeat the enemy and we could have ended this misery long time back.
The Service Commanders

The Service Commanders were the three main line authorities responsible for implementing operational plans. They were carefully selected to their roles purely based on their competencies. The authority that devised the grand strategy knew the behaviour to be expected by the three main operational commands and selected them accordingly irrespective of their seniority or political views.

All three commanders played equally important roles in the success of the battle though the media attention was not equally distributed for their achievements. When General Fonseka is concerned, he was a well experienced General, and an extremely ambitious individual, who was indeed the perfect match to lead the Army to a mission that cannot be delayed any longer.

Yet, he was far from perfect; he had no career prospects in the Army by the end of 2005. Though the writer does not wish to make further elaboration in this aspect, at least for the moment, it is quite clear that General Fonseka would have been another retired General unless his usefulness was correctly identified by the grand strategists of the national defence.

...........continued 2....
It is a Generally accepted norm in the services that military commanders have to be officers and gentlemen. A skilful commander is essential to win a battle, but if he is only a gentleman that he would recognize the contribution of all and shares the credit with them. Unfortunately, General Fonseka's tongue has never been flexible to thank the support he received from other services, particularly the Navy.

It was the Navy that destroyed arms supply chain of the LTTE, and enabled the Army to have a free reign on the ground in terms of weapons. If it was not for the effectiveness of the navy blockades, all senior LTTE leaders were now happily living in some foreign country.

The fact has already been established by the statements of KP that LTTE could not ship any arms in or take its leaders out via sea due to the naval defence during the whole operation. On the other hand, it was the Air Force that paved the way to the Army in LTTE areas by neutralizing LTTE threats with effective bombing. Close air support, helicopter operations, casualty evacuation, and transportation were crucial for the Army's success. Yes, it is the valiant soldiers who advanced into the LTTE dens and liberated the ground; but for the victory, all Three Services made equal contributions. General Fonseka was at the helm of the Army just like Admiral Karannagoda in the Navy and Air Chief Marshal Goonatilake in the Air Force.

Like in the case of the Servicemen, all Three Service Commanders during the humanitarian operation were not new recruits to the Forces. They had already completed 30 years in the services that failed to prevent a gang of murderers growing in to a world's most ruthless terrorist organization. None of them were charismatic commanders like Lt. General Kobbekaduwa, Maj Gen Wimalarathne or Gen. Janaka Perera who had been known to the public for their battlefield successes, though they never became Service Commanders. What was the force that enabled the Service Commanders to achieve such tremendous success in their tenures? Clearly it was the same force that made them celebrities that even enabled some to dream about presidency in the country.
The President

When people of this country elected Mahinda Rajapaksa as their president, they made a very clear choice between two very distinctive ideologies. One was characterized by pusillanimity and uncertainty whereas the other was characterized by bold action and clarity.

Never in his campaign had President Rajapaksa tried to promote himself as a business genius, economic savvy, or an expert in international relations. He simply said he would free the future generation from the burden of terrorism. It was this compelling vision that made people believing in him and ultimately enabled him to do the impossible. Thus, the contribution of the President in the victory against terrorism was paramount.

President Rajapaksa was the only opponent in the whole team that LTTE had not met before. He was the team leader, creator of the vision, and the only national leader out of five Sri Lankan Presidents dealt with LTTE terrorism, who could convert his vision into action. He was the buffer against international pressures, master politician in bringing out political stability, and the leader who could unite the nation to believe in one single vision. He held the nation together amidst the global economic crisis, ever increasing cost of living, and unprecedented political conspiracies. Above all, he even managed to start huge development programs in the country against all odds.

Ananda-USA said...

Et Tu Brute'

.....continued 3.....
He is the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces or the top line authority of the whole operation. He headed the Security Council, weekly he sat with the top brass in defence, monitored the operational progress, reviewed plans, listened and understood the concerns of the defence officials, made bold decisions, solved problems, gave confidence and motivation, provided advice and issued orders. In simple terms, he managed the whole operation. Thus, if one wants to answer to the question who led the operation, it can be no one else but him, President Rajapaksa.

Yet, President Rajapaksa was not the only President who wanted to rid the country of terrorism. President JR Jayawardane tried it hard but failed miserably. It was during his time that LTTE grew into a mass murdering terror outfit. President Premadasa took the challenge to fight with it, but had to pay the ultimate price for the wrong assumptions he made.

President Wijetunge took a bold stance against terrorism but was not strong enough to convert his vision into action successfully. President Kumaratunge had to retire without an eye during her endeavour. How Prime Minister Ranil tried it, is not even worth mentioning. A politician once considered to be a potential President ended up as a clown to the nation. How President Rajapaksa did outperform his predecessors in fighting terrorism? The answer is the bridge that helped him to link his vision with the action.
Defence Secretary

Having worked as a junior staff officer in the nation's top most defence authority under two Presidents, the writer identifies one key factor that made the nation incapable of winning the war against terror for a quarter century. That was the lack of understanding between the executive power and the military. These are the two most important instruments of nation's powers, in the domain of national security.

During the early days of the conflict, both executive and the military were headed by barely Sri Lankan individuals who had very little understanding over the situation they were handling.

They spoke the same language but it was foreign. They did not understand the root cause of the conflict and therefore the implications of their actions and lack of action. They failed to control the anti- Tamil riots in 1983, or the bloody village massacres by the terrorists. They could not stop LTTE bombings targeting civilians. In the writer's view, they did not really care, for they never felt the pain.

Then came the era when military started getting individuals with better understanding of the situation to its top positions. Unfortunately, the executive remained the same and the two instruments of national power started distancing themselves. The executive learnt to live with the war, whereas military top brass withdrew to the comfort zone, until they became mere "yes men". The synergy of the effort between the two instruments was lost for almost forever. There was no genuine interest in either party in wining the war.

Ananda-USA said...

Et Tu Brute

.....continued 4.....
The most unfortunate scenario was how this distancing affected the military ranks. First the executive stopped participating of military functions, and then the service commanders were not to be seen even at officers' passing out parades.

There was a time when the battle commanders had the orders not to disturb the sleep of their respective Service Commanders even during military debacles. Helicopters were allocated to bring snacks from Hilton to Trincomalee for the top defence officials' meetings when soldiers were dying in the battle without proper casualty evacuation. During President Kumaranatunge's time the Security Council meeting was the day that junior staff officers like the writer had to learn fasting since she always arrived six to seven hours late.

That was the kind of interest she had for the national security. The Servicemen lost the pride of their profession, they were called "broiler chicken" when they come home, it became a war no one interested in that they had to fight.
The vital factor

The lengthy explanation above is considered necessary for an ordinary citizen to understand the most vital factor that the enabled Sri Lankan Armed Forces to achieve, what was deemed impossible. It is the contribution made by Defence Secretary, Gotabaya Rajapaksa. He was certainly not the one who created the vision and led the operation but he was the grand strategist, the facilitator, advisor, and the man who looked after the people behind the weapons. Simply, he was the man who bridged the gap between the executive and military and enabled the President to convert his vision into action.

He was the person who selected the Service Commanders including General Fonseka and even defended them during the difficult times they had. The key strategic decision, which was to destroy the LTTE with force, was taken even before General Fonseka was appointed Army Commander. He did the planning and made strategic decision, and General Fonseka becoming, Army Commander was just one of those decisions.

He being a battle hardened soldier himself talked same language of the soldiers. He being the brother of the President knew how to establish the two way communication and trust between the two instruments of power. He knew the people commanding, and the weaknesses they have.

He supported their strengths and compensated their weaknesses with his own strengths. He looked after the welfare of the war heroes, uplifted their morale, resurrected their pride, and made them confident that they where fighting an ending battle. The welfare programs he started for war heroes are unprecedented.

His scope of strategic planning for the national security was very much wider and important than of an individual Armed Service. For instance, General Fonseka did not have a clue how the LTTE armada in the seas were tracked and destroyed, how the international pressures were handled, how LTTE propaganda was defeated , how the national intelligence was managed, and etc.

Hence, if one wants the answer to the question who was the mastermind behind the success of the whole war effort, he is no one else but Defence Secretary Rajapaksa himself. He was the factor that had been not there before with the previous Commanders-in-Chiefs who dealt with the LTTE. He was the man who outwitted Prabhakaran, and his far more intelligent allies around the world and brought the terror Tigers to their feet.

Ananda-USA said...

Et Tu Brute'

........continued 5....
Finally, it is an irony why General Fonseka is thinking that he is the only hero of this war and deserves more than the rest of the team. Maybe it is because of his ignorance of the realty or he being pandered to the mean-spirited politicians who once sought to destroy him. He might have been engaged in a mission something like "Saving Private Ranil" even without his knowledge.

The writer still remembers the day when the news of Prabhakarn's death came to the Defence Ministry. It reached the Ministry even before it reached General Fonseka. When the writer inquired from Defence Secretary whether to release the news, he had only one thing to say "let General Fonseka tell it to the nation on TV". That was the kind of leadership Defence Secretary Rajapaksa gave to the team.

General Fonseka has been given what he really deserves. He was made Chief of Defence Staff, the senior most staff authority in the Armed Forces. Even the position of the Defence Secretary is a staff authority. General Fonseka's desire to take the line authority of all Three Forces or to hold an appointment like "Three Forces Commander" is hilarious for any discernible military person.

Nevertheless, General Fonseka's battle ended on the day that LTTE leader died but not for the rest of the team that he was once part of. If he thinks he can be the President by marketing his part of the contribution to war, the writer truly wishes him success. Yet, if he tries to cheat the people by beating the others' drums, it would be a serious mistake on his part. May he would be wise enough not to make that mistake!

("Et tu, Brute?" (pronounced and occasionally spelled "Et tu, Brut‚?") ("Even you, Brutus?", or "And you, Brutus?" or "You too, Brutus?" or "You also, Brutus?") is a Latin phrase often used poetically to represent the last words of Roman Emperor Julius Caesar. Immortalized by Shakespeare's Julius Caesar, the quotation is widely used in Western culture as an epitome of betrayal.)

I am deply disturbed about what is going on now. I think there is a big story behind all these happenings and SF just want to revenge rajapakshas in return.
If the SF just a commander of army and work accoring to the master strategists (gota and MR), he can not be so hard on his claims and he evewn can not dictate on things to get favored to his side.
If you analys all the communic going on these days, It gives me strong fleeling that, Lot of winning stregies were of SF and he himself had exssesively put pressure on political leadership to not to bow for international pressure. Some time the pressure might have come as indication of military takeover, if there is any pressure to stop the WAR.
If you go back to mavil Aru incident, it was JHU, JVP and other partiots, who presurise govt to take actions. MR was tight by those forces and later he found that it is really boosting his image to stick to it.
Military coup story in these circumstance, can be understandable and who in this blog believe that MR to inform India for a help.
what had happen is only known by MR, SF and gota.
But whatever done by SF is not a reason for him to sleep with "Jathiye Pahara Ballo"

Dear Ananda Aiya,

I understood and agree with you. Please check my previous posts, I have never against Mr President until Gen. SF's resignation letter published to the media.

There are two reasons why I have changed my mind.

01. Indian (bloody-Indians) intervention in Sri Lanka. You know from the beginning I was very mush of against the India because I live in such a society where people do not know how to love their Motherland and my most of posts here were against the India.

What is the assurance you can give that MR will not follow the Indians agenda??

02. Some of our old chaps here trying to discriminate SF with some falls propaganda.

------
I guess we should argue and counter argue in this blog to select the correct person at the end as we have 55 days more.

You stand quite close to my pov. It is indeed what I say too. Whatever he did for nation, nation is not a little gift that we can give away to him, when he brings his team of traitors, either appoint them with exe powers, or take the dictatorship to his hand, and divide SL by means of a strong constitutional amendment that gives more than 13th. Lot more.

Ranil/Mongala/Gonason/Hakeem/... all agree for a fegeral solution with acceptance of self-determination, and hmoland myth. If SF thinks of something more tahn 13th, and he believes that RW and clan has cision rightly for teh future of SL, I'm quite certain that he will accept federalism, selfD and homoland.

What would most of his supporters say on taht day? What do you guys have to say about "something more than 13th amendment"?

Panhinda loves anything more than any other devolution package. He'd love this. Fonseka 2010 was always supporting eelam, and he'd also love it. But Priyashantha, B#1, and few other new names taht popped up, what have you gotto say about "something more than 13th"?

It will be very difficult to support SF when he competes to revive the dying top scum of Sri Lanka and Eelamists. SF was better known for his warrior spirit. If his intention is to carry forward the agenda he had in the past when he was a hero, then I will be hard pressed to select one candidate to vote for. Teaming up with Ranil, Awamangala, Mano, and Rauf is a no show for me.

I do not wanna see SF winning, yet I denounce the racist candidate more than that. Even if they vote for SF, that is better than allowing a racist to contest.

SL needs the laws to prohibit sectarianism, separatism and segregation.

If you refer to TNA, NO.

Not until they denounce eelam claims, tamil tamil tamil sectarianism and hgatred against SL.

There are some who'd leave them and accept Sri Lankanism. Most back row members and relatively anti-pussycat chapies like EPRLF and TELO etc. But the top scums remain so as long as they keep up with their agenda.

FYI, I have never appreciated likes of MilindM, GL, Rajitha, Thissa Witharana etc although tehy are a part of MR admin. But MR keeps them silent and away from national security. So I have great faith in him that he can do teh same to some of the converted eelamists.

The diff in SF is taht he's succumbing to the traitors and uttering the gibberish of rotten federalism and f**king velvet democracy and media mess-anything freedom.

What have you got to say about "something more than 13th"?

What have you gotta say about SF handing over exe powers to RW [now this is the plan accepted by all the parties]?

And B#1; in your charge sheet against MR, you never mentioned anything about lack of development. Does this mean that you agree with us that there is some level of development happening under MR? Do you agree that the outcome for nation is better than Premadasa/CBK/RW times [latter two, did they do any development anyway?]

B#1; we may differ in ideas, but we debate this as we share some fundamentals. I guess it is time to NOT TO consider us as your personal enemies.

And if you dug a bit into my posts, I have never criticized SF for matters other than getting hooked up with traitors and issuing some very disturbing statements.

Well…

After some time. Interesting developments after LTTE menace.

Totally agree with SR@SL’s comments about JRJ, RP, CBK era on last page.

Not sure you already discussed about this earlier (sorry… I’ve followed comments only on last 2 pages)
According to some info, there was this intelligence report received from neighbour country (I suspect India) stating SF is going to topple gov. and form a military rule with help of another neighbour country (I suspect Pakistan). Then gov. believed in that and requested help from Indian gov. if such scenario occurs (This is also mentioned in SF’s mail to MR. So I believe there is some truth around this Intel report story).

First thing came to my mind is, who exactly provided/prepared this info?
Is this report wrong and MR trapped for that? (Even though this is false report, then I think MR has every right to suspect and take action as necessary, So in that sense I strongly disagree with SF)
After all… are we facing Indian involvement again?
Time will tell….

On the other hand. This is no international game. Just Mongala/Chandrika work. Plan plotted way back in July
http://www.lankaenews.com/Sinhala/news.php?id=11300
(I’m sure even Ranil won’t vote for SF as well as hard line UNP supporters). Only sad part is SF has to go on this path and people has divided.

My personal feeling is MR deserves another term and if he don’t deliver economically, continue with corruption and Mervin type politics, then people should decide then. (Please note I’m not hard line politician or supporter, changed political views time to time. I think everyone has good and bad so, should not be labelled. Only the specific actions he/she makes should matter and dealt with).

Cheers…

SooraP and others;

Note that we're not 100% happy with Indian influence in SL or the scums in govt and [worst] traitors in govt.

This is why most bloggers here are happy to see MR not getting 2/3 although it may cost us a chance to change constitution. I'd rather remain with the crap vote system and exe presidency if the other option involves risks of providing unnecessary decision powers to regional rule [13+].

If SF can stand for these critical matters and come clean and by himself, into a meaningful contest, yes I'd vote for him. Right now problem is;

1. He contests with worst enemies [far worse than India] of nation

2. Ideologically he gives into them and utters their gibberish.

3. Him contesting PE is purely for vengeance of his and opportunism of his clan. In reality he shud have contested GE not PE.

4. MR is doing some development. And to me, its gain to nation is far better than most recent leaders. So we need them to finish. We don't want to see hambantota harbor, mattala airport, City in hambantota and many other such work stopping.

5. SF assures that his goal is to bring Ranil to power. Instead of current good work, previous Ranil crap such as taxes on wells, implementing Us systems in SL, Sathosa holding a UB40 musical show and later disintegrate into their friends hands, federalism, sending BD cards to pussycats, calling Portugral to come and celebrate with us for the anniversary of that ruthless 1505 invasion etc getting under way.

So choice is obvious. That does not mean that we'd agree for all what MR does.

Good thing about SF affair is that it made MR humble again and he seems more sensible than SPC election times.

B#1 said...

SK,

I see here that you are taking bloggers for a ride all the time. Keep it up.

To answer your question I did not expect any development projects from MR as I needed to finish bloody WAR as soon as possible and MR+SF+GR did it very well. And you know a small country like Sri Lanka can't even think about big scale capital investments while there is a high expensive war.

/Fonseka’s wife says Astrologers predict good times ahead

by Norman Palihawadane

Anoma Fonseka, the wife of Gen. (Retd) Sarath Fonseka, the presidential candidate of the UNP-JVP combined opposition, yesterday said that her husband’s horoscope had been read by some leading astrologers in the country and all were of the opinion that he would have a good time ahead.

"We did not have much faith in horoscope readers and soothsayers. But as our friends and relatives kept on insisting that his horoscope should be read, I gave it to them. They took his horoscope to several leading astrologers who all had said that the time ahead was good for him and there were no signs of any problem," she told The Island.

Mrs Fonseka said that she had no intention of participating in her husband’s political works actively but would encourage him./

If true.. nothing to worry.. He will lose, UNP will fire the coole, he will have good time ahead with no problems.. as MR is so kind for him.. OTOH, he should be facing a lot of troubles if he become preident as usual for any leader..

Response of WW was pretty good. But the cordinator is already a SLFP organizer and I don't agree some facts he said.

Ex: It was a conspiracy that SF said war will be over by December 2009.

Come on. It was a very realistic prediction. There must have been lots of contingency planning in it. And lots of luck worked out. And India's political map forced the May19th finish.

Pls do not use bullshit for attacking either candidate, and note that you're loosing support for your side if you do this.

Astrology and elections..

Its only in SL astrologers too can earn when elections are called. Both parties use paid astrologers to predict victory of their own parties and candidates. SL population is largely controlled by astrologers when it comes to marriages etc but I am not sure what extent they influence in elections. Anyway, both parties employee same trick for decades in motivating and demotivating voters. In RPs time he used lakehouse astrology paper effectively, and then mongal used irahanda with priyantha kumara until they got screwed.

/President Mahinda Rajapaksa still in the lead

A survey conducted by the State Intelligence Service has revealed that President Mahinda Rajapaksa was ahead of General Sarath Fonseka. The secret report handed over to the President by Director of the Intelligence Service, DIG Keerthi Gajanyake states the President had 53% of the preferences while the General commanded only 46%.

The report further stated that although General Fonseka was very popular in urban areas, the President was the preferred choice in rural areas.

However, a secret report presented to the President by the Intelligence Service a month earlier said the President had 60% of the preference. The President’s election campaign was launched months earlier while the General is yet to launch his campaign.

A senior officer of the Intelligence Service who gave us this information said a survey has not been done aft General Fonseka officially announced his intention of contesting the election. Threw officer said the results could differ after the General launches his campaign and the possibility of a Tamil candidate contesting the election./

Polls and elections...

The common method in developed countries. It may be hard to manipulate in western countries though some accuse. Classic example was all polls predicting BJP victory and congress winning in 2005. LNW/mongal approach is starting from MR-60%, SF-40% and ending just before election MR-40% and SF-60%.

yes and no.

SF is driven by mainly 3 things.

1. to become the president (which is a motivation in itself)

2. to satisfy his HUGE ego

3. to take revenge from GR

but MOST battle plans involving the TRI FORCES were NOT his. they were MOSTLY GR's. SF used to agree to every plan of GR.

the mavil aru thing is deeper than that. SF was on medical leave from april-july 2006. during this time govt planned the eastern assault starting from newly built LTTE camps around trinco.

mavil aru was a trap and LTTE fell into it like idiots. by late july we were 100% ready to smash the LTTE without even attempting to open the sluice gates!!!! LTTE then opened the suice gates and said, there is no need to fight now, we have done it.

how dumb?? we were working to a BIGGER plan they didn't understand. by the time they understood it, it was too late.

the same goes for the last 1 and half weeks of war as well. planning and execution (immediate planning was required bcos things were changing so rapidly) were done WITHOUT SF. SF was out of the country.

SF clearly said the reason to resign was he didn't have powers as promised as CDS. So if he had powers he will not resign. In other words he is after power. He is driven by extreme power greediness, huge ego and revenge from GR his men.

He is determined. VP was also determined. SL people know better than any other nation what will happen a determined man is after power with ego and revenge. Majority of tamils believed it will be good for "them" and supported a monster for 3 decades and rest is history. Now sinhala people has democratic chance to show the world what's their type.

Moshe and Sujeeva,

I recently spend lots of time speaking to the people of various walks in SL. The people I talked to included, a soldier from Southern Province, a son of a poor farmer from SP, an officer from NCP, a mechanic from NWP, a Moor businessman from NWP, a few teachers and professionals from NWP, a few professionals from CP, professionals from WP including doctors and scientists, and a few wealthy businessmen from WP. The feedback I received was overwhelmingly for MR. Many of them flat-out rejected SF for the fact that SF is an unknown name in politics. Only one die-hard UNPer was for SF. The wealthy businessman said that all he wants is political stability and peace. He simply doesn't want another election. Things could be even worse after SF openly stated that he would accept LTTE money also. Even though I doubt "LNW" SIS opinion poll, I think that MR should even spend a second idling until the election day.

What is the assurance you can give that MR will not follow the Indians agenda?? ]

B#1,

There is no absolute assurance anyone can give that MR will not follow the Indian's agenda. This is a legitimate fear that most patriots have.

But, what assurance can you give me, that SF who is allying himself with known Anti-SL forces (except, perhaps, the JVP) will not do so either? Once he joins them, and relies on them for political support, he is a captive pigeon that must CONFORM to their wishes or give his dream of political glory. So, the man who sacrifices his honor for personal aggrandizement, will be blackmailed and debased further in time, until not even he would be able to recognize the patriot and war hero he was! Given the character flaw that SF displayed in breaking ranks and joining the Anti-SL Opposition he had formerly assailed, and his particularly disappointing purile letter of resignation, I believe he will have far less resistance to the Indian agenda than the MR-GR combination.

MR may become foolishly heady with Western and Indian accolades as a "peacemaker" and begin to follow the Indian agenda, against Sri Lanka's best interest .. it is possible, but very unlikely .. because MR's legacy will be PLANTED, GROWN and FOSTERED among his own people, not in the outside world to whom MR is a fish in a very little pond. For example, o us Sri Lankans, Dutiugamunu is a patriotic giant we revere .. to the world at large he is unknown.

However, If that happens, we can rely on GR to resist and correct MR's course back to the patriotic path linked ONLY TO Sri Lankan interests, as he had done when the Milibands and the Kouchners were pressuring the GOSL.

In the final analysis, Sri Lankan patriots will be the ONLY RELIABLE ASSURANCE that our leaders do not deviate from the Patriotic Path.

something tells me if or when SF loses this election, we will have a permanant "mahasona".

"The origin of the spirit ‘Mahasona’

After winning the war against king Elara, almost every one was only feeling sad about Theraputtabhaya’s renunciation of worldly life again. They however, consoled themselves thinking that he was greater than any one of them. The ceremonies were not confined to the capital city. In distant villages too, people were celebrating. The commanders and warriors had celebrations in their own homes. The entire city of Anuradhapura took a festive atmosphere that day.

Except for Theraputtabhaya, all others participated in the celebrations. They ate, drank and made merry. Some enjoyed dancing. Out of all the scenes of festivity, the one at Gothabhaya’s residence was very grand. Gothabhaya’s best friend Jayasena was instrumental in making it a great success.

Jayasena, was strong and well-versed in the art of fighting. He was a good wrestler too. Being a clever hunter, he preferred hunting the bear. He never killed a bear by shooting an arrow or striking him with a weapon. Instead he followed a method of irritating the bear and when the animal was angry he jumps on him and starts wrestling. Jayasena then succeeds in making the animal almost lifeless. Then he kills it.

On certain days, Jaysena skins the animal from head to foot, covers himself with the skin and dances a real ‘Bear Dance’. Many witnessed this dance. It’s here, that Gothaimbara met Jayasena and made a friendship with him. They got so close, that Jayasena played a major role at Gothaimbara’s celebrations. All who met at Gothaimbara’s house were well treated by his wife.

The chief invitee at the function was the warrior Nandimitra. All who were gathered there, respected him. At this party, Jayasena consumed a lot of liquor. When he was drinking beyond the limit, his friends advised him to stop, but he didn’t. He could not control himself.

Drunk though he was, he was still enjoying. When Gothaimbara’s wife, who was very pretty, went past him, Jayasena held her by her hand. In anger, she pulled her hand and went away. Jayasena followed her and held her by the hand once more. His friend who tried to discipline him, failed. He followed the lady and a big commotion was created.

Gothaimbara noticed all this. He tolerated for a while. When Jayasena was going far beyond the limit, Gothaimbara lost his patience and jumped upon Jayasena to attack him.

Jayasena too tried to fight back. The friends then jumped in between the two and with great effort stopped the fight. As a result of this fight, a lot of good food and drink arranged for the party was strewn all over. The place was in a real mess.

At the ceremony at Gothaimbara’s residence, there was a big commotion. The best of friends had become enemies. They were all involved in a big fight.

Though some attempted to stop it, it was of no avail. Warrior Nandimitra who observed everything in silence, roared aloud asking everybody to stop fighting. Everyone was stunned. They stopped the fight.

Nandimitra then went to Gothaimbara and Jayasena and told them, “If you want to fight, this is not the place for it. I’ll arrange a place with the king’s permission and keep you informed of the details”. Then he asked Jayasena’s friends to take him away. They did so. The ceremony came to an end. Nandimitra went back.

[02. Some of our old chaps here trying to discriminate SF with some falls propaganda.]

Yes, some times the "old chaps" do go overboard in their enthusiasm, and it is good to point out their errors from time to time .. when they are in error.

But, that does not mean that you have to vociferously support SF's candidacy when you are equally unsure of his motives and agenda.

Look at what we do know beyond debate:

1. He is an important war hero whose war strategies on land may have been the deciding factor in gaining us our victory. We also know that he has served the military creditably his entire career.

But, we also know that he had only a land operations assignment; and cannot claim credit for naval and air force operations, the coordination of the overall war strategy, providing funds and material for the war effort, and handling the diplomatic and political issues. He played his part, as others did theirs. So, how can he claim excessive credit for being the SOLE WAR WINNER?

2. His letter of resignation was a disaster; he should have thanked the president and said he wishes to now enter politics. Period. Instead, he gave a laundry list of MINOR complaints .. to lay the basis for his political candidacy. But, that displays his political inexperience .. no one would vote for someone who writes a letter like that. Moreover, we know that letter was dictated by the people he was courting for political support .. does that sound like what a man of honor, a war hero would do? I thought he had lost his senses!

3. SF has allied himself with KNOWN desadrohis .. an eventuality I would not have dreamed possible from a war hero like SF. Allying himself with RW, Mano Ganeshan, the TNA etc etc! He threw his entire reputation away by doing this. Here he again displayed the weakness of his character: he let unbounded personal ambition overwhelm his patriotism. His patriotism was for sale if the price was high enough!

I largely dismiss all other false allegations being levelled against SF by people as election gundus, as I dismiss similar allegations against the MR-GOSL.

But, for me, points 1,2 and 3 are enough not to support SF's candidacy. We desparately need 10 years of stable development economic growth; and a stable patritic government is the MOST IMPORTANT necessary prerequisite for that.

Points 1, 2, and 3 should also be ENOUGH for every other PATRIOTIC Sri Lankan who wants OUR Motherland to remain secure and prosper in the years ahead!

OUR people deserve this BREAK after a 30-year NIGHTMARE; let us make it possible by giving a 2/3 majority MR-GOSL government in the Presidential and General Elections!

Moshe Dyan said...

....contd.

"
Nandimitra met King Dutugemunu and reported everything that happened. The king gave permission for an unarmed fight. A date and a place was also decided upon and they were kept informed.

When they were free of the influence of liquor, they realized the gravity of what was to come. Both of them got further training in fighting. Meanwhile, Nandimitra got the men to decorate the place where the fight was going to be and arranged seats for the supporters of both sides.

Warrior Suranimala was appointed as the judge. The appointed day dawned. Crowds gathered, well ahead of the fixed time. Gothaimbara too arrived early. Jayasena then followed, accompanied by his friends. A bell was rung to announce the starting time. The two contestants were standing in the centre – both frothing and fuming. They bowed to the crowd gathered there and got back.

Both of them almost ran to each other, with clenched fists. Each was trying to put the other down. They were equally matched and neither would give in. Warrior Suranimala then came up and parted them for a while. In a moment, the struggle started again. Jayasena pounced upon Gothaimbara.

Gothaimbara avoided the blow and returned blows to Jayasena. Jayasena was also clever enough to dodge them. As the fight dragged on, the onlookers were getting bored. Jayasena jumped up and pounced on Gothaimbara, giving him a big blow.

Gothaimbara dodged it and took his turn to jump up in the air and pounce upon Jayasena. Jayasena dodged but he was slightly hit. This made him act ferociously. He gave a deadly blow to Gothaimbara, who with difficulty, managed to dodge it. Jayasena was more than shocked to see his attack fail. Gothaimbara made use of this opportunity. He jumped into the air. No one noticed what he did with his left leg. They could only see Jayasena’s head, right up. The fight ended and the crowd dispersed.

When Gothaimbara left the battle ground, accompanied by his friends, Jayasena’s friends too got together. They took the headless corpse of Jayasena to the closest cemetery. They kept a bear’s head in place of the head and covered Jayasena’s corpse with a bear-skin.

This corpse was kept standing, leaning on a tree and tied to it. In the evening, a villager who went past the place shouted in fear, thinking it to be a strange creature. He ran away. He was later discovered unconscious.

A devil-dancer was brought to the scene and a ‘thovil’ had to be performed to bring him back to normality. When he gained consciousness, he related all that had happened. The odd creature he saw at the cemetery was a ‘spirit’ and he was named Mahasona."

What we use against a person (in social arena) must be able to be proven in a court of law with genuine evidence.

What we use against a politician must be at least sincerely felt according to the available evidence. Distorting the events and statements are tools of deprivation of the voter to make the right choice for the voters themselves.

Politicians not only should behave impeccably but also should insure that they would be perceived as impeccable. Otherwise they deserve public scorn. But the attacks need to be sincere otherwise we are attacking the right of the public for sincere information.

Though I vehemently oppose to SF, some Ministers are going overboard discrediting themselves rather than SF.

It is a sad situation; indeed it is very sad to see patriots are fighting each other. I put the blame on MR, GR and SF equally and squarely. They all lost their heads over unbelievable success of eliminating the abominable cancer called LTTE. They got drugged from the victory and couldn’t see the danger until it is too late.

Is it too late even now? No! Still they can come to their senses and avoid a possible disaster. Disaster is not who will win the next PE or who will lose. Disaster is the division it will create.

When Ponnaseka2010 started his smear campaign; I never ever thought it will come to this.

Our patriotic camp has undermined the strength of internal and external traitors and enormous wealth they posses to destabilise our motherland.

I sincerely hope that MR, GR and SF will see the wisdom of being united once again keep on fighting the true enemy of Sri Lanka.

United we stand; divided we fall.

I like to think Mr. Fonseka as a true patriot from Ambalagoda. He should give his nomination as a common candidate or independent candidate and bid for time until it is too late for opposition to do anything. Then withdraw from the contest and join the patriotic camp and campaign for MR. In return MR should make him the next Prime Minister of Sri Lanka.

Is it possible, yes it is? That is the only way to defeat dark forces that are gathering to condemn and destroy Sri Lanka for few more decades.

Mr. Fonseka please wakes up for the sake of motherland as well as yourself.

this is the wish of all patriots.

GR is least at fault.

1. he keeps away from politics.

2. he did EVERYTHING he could to help SF.

3. he went out of his way in helping SF and the familiy with EXCEPTIONAL benefits like land, etc.

4. he gave his neck for SF. when SF was allegedly killing journalists, GR came forward and told journalists not to interfere. they were trying to provoke SF and get something out of his lose mouth. as a result GR got the bad name for nothing.

5. when SF (factually correct) called tamil madu jokers ass clowns (well done but bad timing), GR apologised and made amends.

6. GR intevened and told MR to keep Sf until the war's end extending the term by one year after another.

7. GR managed VERY VERY DIFFICULT NSC meetings where SF and WK and even RG were not behaving like team members. donald p kept away from it which was the wise thing to do.

SF is most at fault.

MR is at the middle.

STILL, the continuing fall of SF is unthinkable. on sunday he said he will even get the help of VP's parents to defeat MR. this is not something a former team mate would say in his right mind.

there would be a time, IF things continue at this rate, where SF would have spent all his good name earned over 40 years.

“Why should the Tamil Speaking Communities Give Critical Support to Sarath Fonseka?” – Vasantha Raja

2009-11-30 | 3.45 PM

Tamils must not play a sectarian role in the presidential election. That’ll be counterproductive. This is not the time for Tamils to do politics based on anger and hatred. Tamils, I think, should realize democratic transformation of the Centre is crucial for them. Also, Tamil-speaking people - including plantation-workers & Muslims and Colombo Tamils- live all over Sri Lanka. Therefore, it’s

important to make all calculations in general terms, not in sectarian terms. All parties of the Tamil-speaking people should maintain a solid united front in presenting their demands. They should present them to the General in no uncertain terms. It should amount to a critical support – not a blank cheque.
The presidential election will mark a unique turn in Sri Lankan politics, irrespective of the protagonist’s personal background. This election will change Sinhala majority’s post-independent consciousness substantially. Sri Lanka will never be the same whatever the outcome.

But, it’ll be better if the General wins. For, such a change will accelerate the change. Remember, he doesn’t represent any politically deep-rooted party of the Establishment. That’s positive. A substantial section of the Sinhala majority - who backed the crushing of the Tigers for its separatist/terrorist politics – will oppose the Mahinda-regime in this election for very good reasons. It is absolutely important to educate this section of the Sinhala majority to go beyond their changing mindset. They should be helped to grasp democratic/socialist values. This election campaign provides an unprecedented opportunity to do exactly that. In order to do this, enlightened minority should participate in their experience along with them. This is why JVP’s backing of the General is prudent.

It would have been much better if the entire Left – along with the JVP – took the same stance, and use the electoral platform to educate the people anticipating post-electoral developments. This is why I think Comrade Bahu is wrong to contest independently. Now that he is contesting, he could still use the election-platform for propaganda purposes, and pull out towards the end of the campaign appealing his supporters to vote for the General; I’ve no doubt he’ll be able to give extremely sensible reasons why he’s pulling out. His supporters will surely understand that.

Gents,

I have watched General Fonseka's interview on video several times. I recommend that all patriots, even those who don't support him, watch the entire video segment. There is a big disconnect between the English translations as reported in some of the leading newspapers and the original Sinhala text. The General conducted the interview in Sinhala 90% of the time and it is difficult to capture the true essence of some of his statements in translation.

here are some noteworthy things in this video segment:

Minutes 5.50 on seem to bring out his reasons for quitting his CDS post:

(1) no power in CDS (2) looked at CDS position in other countries (3) wanted operational authority over three services (my take is that he must have made some recommendations to change the position structure but was probably rebuffed)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=559VAy5tQ-I

8.35 is about allegations against son-in-law regarding arms deals

The speech is not bad for someone who just came out of the service. In fact, he is quite humourous at times (e.g., he says that he will not ban alcohol usage because no one will vote for him).

On a related subject, here is the text of the petition filed with the Supreme Court

Expert Inspector said...

The victory over terrorism is certainly not General Fonseka’s individual achievement.

Expert Inspector said...

Though the writer does not wish to make further elaboration in this aspect, at least for the moment, it is quite clear that General Fonseka would have been another retired General unless his usefulness was correctly identified by the grand strategist of the national defence.

It is a Generally accepted norm in the services that military commanders have to be officers and gentlemen. A skilful commander is essential to win a battle, but if he is only a gentleman that he would recognize the contribution of all and shares the credit with them. Unfortunately, General Fonseka’s tongue has never been flexible to thank the support he received from other services, particularly the Navy.

It was the Navy that destroyed arms supply chain of the LTTE, and enabled the Army to have a free reign on the ground in terms of weapons. If it was not for the effectiveness of the navy blockades, all senior LTTE leaders were now happily living in some foreign country.

Expert Inspector said...

Close air support, helicopter operations, casualty evacuation, and transportation were crucial for the Army’s success.

They had already completed 30 years in the services that failed to prevent a gang of murderers growing in to a world’s most ruthless terrorist organization. None of them were charismatic commanders like General Kobbakaduwa or Janaka Perera who had been known to the public for their battlefield successes, though they never became Service Commanders. What was the force that enabled the Service Commanders to achieve such tremendous success in their tenures? Clearly it was the same force that made them celebrities that even enabled some to dream about presidency in the country.

Expert Inspector said...

He is the Commander-in-chief of the Armed Forces or the top line authority of the whole operation. He headed the Security Council, weekly he sat with the top brass in defence, monitored the operational progress, reviewed plans, listen and understood the concerns of the defence officials, made bold decisions, solved problems, gave confidence and motivation, provide advice and issued orders. In simple terms, he managed the whole operation. Thus, if one wants to answer to the question who led the operation, it can be no one else but him, President Rajapksa.

Expert Inspector said...

Having worked as a junior staff officer in the nation’s top most defence authority under two presidents, the writer identifies one key factor that made the nation incapable of winning the war against terror for a quarter century. That was the lack of understanding between the executive power and the military. These are the two most important instruments of nation’s powers, in the domain of national security.

In the writer’s view, they did not really care, for they never felt the pain.

Then came the era when military started getting individuals with better understanding of the situation to its top positions. Unfortunately, the executive remained the same and the two instruments of national power started distancing themselves. The executive learnt to live with the war, whereas military top brass withdrew to the comfort zone, until they became mere “yes men”. The synergy of the effort between the two instruments was lost for almost forever. There was no genuine interest in either party in wining the war.

The most unfortunate scenario was how this distancing affected the military ranks. First the executive stopped participating of military functions, and then the service commanders were not to be seen even at officers’ passing out parades.

There was a time when the battle commanders had the orders not to disturb the sleep of their respective Service Commander even during military debacles. Helicopters were allocated to bring snacks from Hilton to Trincomalee for the top defence officials’ meetings when soldiers were dying in the battle without proper casualty evacuation. During President Kumaranatunge’s time the Security Council meeting was the day that junior staff officers like the writer had to learn fasting since she always arrived six to seven hours late.

That was the kind of interest she had for the national security. The Servicemen lost the pride of their profession, they were called “broiler chicken” when they come home, it became a war no one interested in that they had to fight.

Expert Inspector said...

He was the factor that had been not there before with the previous commanders in chief who dealt with the LTTE. He was the man who outwitted Prbhakaran, and his far more intelligent allies around the world and brought the terror Tigers to their feet.

Finally, it is an irony why General Fonseka is thinking that he is the only hero of this war and deserves more than the rest of the team. Maybe it is because of his ignorance of the realty or he being pandered to the mean-spirited politicians who once sought to destroy him. He might have been engaged in a mission something like “Saving Private Ranil” even without his knowledge.

The writer still remembers the day when the news of Prabhakarn’s death came to the Defence Ministry. It reached the Ministry even before it reached General Fonseka. When the writer inquired from Defence Secretary whether to release the news, he had only one thing to say “let General Fonseka tell it to the nation on TV”. That was the kind of leadership Defence Secretary Rajapaksa gave to the team.

General Fonseka has been given what he is really deserves. He was made Chief of Defence Staff, the senior most staff authority in the Armed Forces. Even the position of the Defence Secretary is a staff authority. General Fonseka’s desire to take the line authority of all Three Forces or to hold an appointment like “Three Forces Commander” is hilarious for any discernible military person.

Nevertheless, General Fonseka’s battle ended on the day that LTTE leader died but not the rest of the team that he was once part of. If he thinks he can be the President by marketing his part of the contribution to war, the writer truly wishes him success. Yet, if he tries to cheat the people by beating the others’ drums, it would be a serious mistake on his part. May he would be wise enough not to make that mistake!

You asked me “bro, why is your blood boiling now?”…well, here is a very good reason:

General Fonseka at his first news briefing at the JAIC Hilton formally announced he would contest the presidential election as the common candidate and that he would gladly accept the support from whatever quarter whether former LTTE cadres, sympathizers or supporters including Velupillai Prabhakaran’s parents if they were prepared to accept his work plan and policies

Read my last post carefully…if not READ MY LIPS CAREFULLY….what matters to me is who is out to destroy our motherland with racist separatism and whoever that COCKSUCKER will meet with my humble displeasure.

On the contrary if even RW PONNA HUTTHA were to come into the anti-racist-separatism, patriotic clan today, I will consider him a “friendlie.”

LTTE People Smuggling Racket in India Continues With Renewed Vigor with the General Release of IDPs

.......
LTTE cadres fleeing Sri Lanka via India

Rajesh Ahuja / DNA

November 30, 2009

New Delhi: The decimation of the LTTE in Sri Lanka has given a big push to illegal immigration involving Sri Lankan Tamils in India. There is a sudden spurt in Sri Lankan Tamils illegally crossing over to India to take a flight abroad. Agents have kept apace by doubling fees for passports and visa.

Investigators believe most Sri Lankans trying to cross-over to western shores via India are LTTE cadres or sympathizers. Airport authorities have caught at least 40 Sri Lankan Tamils trying to take such flights from Indian airports.

In a latest case at the Indira Gandhi International (IGI) airport on November 16, Rajan Kumar was stopped from boarding an Air India flight to New York, after the US visa on his passport drew suspicion. The regional passport office in Hyderabad had purportedly issued the passport.

But close scrutiny showed the passport was fake. It would have gone down as another case of illegal immigration had Rajan not told investigators he was a Sri Lankan Tamil who had illegally crossed over to India.

His original name was Sivapalan and apart for his Indian passport, he was also carrying documents to prove his Sri Lankan identity. Sivapalan explained he planned to show his original Sri Lankan documents on reaching America. "He would have claimed to be an LTTE sympathizer and a victim of persecution by Sri Lankan forces," said a source who interrogated Sivapalan. But authorities are undecided on whether Sivapalan was really an LTTE recruit or just trying to get a toe-hold in the US.

Sivapalan had got his boarding pass before he was detained, indicating some kind of connivance with airline staff. It is also clear that Sivapalan got his Indian passport from a gang that catered to Sri Lankan Tamils.

The gang has links to an illegal immigration racket busted in Chennai. On October 22, the Chennai police arrested two agents -- Mahenthiran Kajenthiran and Vellaiyan Tharamalingan -- from Vetri Nagar and recovered 27 Indian passports of Sri Lankan Tamils from their houses. Seven Sri Lankan passports and some visa stamps of UK and other western countries too were found.

The passports were meant for Sri Lankan Tamils but the racket was busted before they could be handed over to clients. What startled the authorities was recovery of LTTE propaganda, indicating the gang was helping Sri Lankan Tamils flee India.

During interrogation, the agents gave details of a well-oiled operation in which LTTE cadres or sympathizers are sent abroad. The gang was led by a person named Kalidass, arrested later.

Kalidass used to take people to exotic European locales posing as film crew. But the crew never returned.Authorities are still clueless on the whereabouts of such Sri Lankan Tamils whose passports the gang prepared. So far, only their names are known.

The incumbent president and UPFA leader made few mistakes lately. One is not announcing general election immediately after victory. The second is his decision to have early Presidential Election. The second mistake is a grave one than the first one.

He is taking a totally unnecessary risk for nothing. He may still come out victorious but PE result may weaken the forthcoming general election.

If the next PE is to be held tomorrow MR will get minimum 53% and SF may get maximum of 46% of the total votes. However, election is another 56 days away.

MR cannot increase his share of votes; but he may lose some on his style of governance. SF may lose or gain his share of votes; depending on how he and his supporters handle the campaign. If SF lose initial vote base MR will win both elections comfortably. Somehow if SF and opposition managed to increase their share by attracting moderates; then MR may have a problem.

Ramanathan,

Your first post asked the question as to why no death certificate has been provided to an Indian court certifying that Prabhakaran is dead.

In Sri Lanka a coroner must ascertain the cause of death in cases of accidental death. This would be problematic since it would reveal how Prabhakaran died. It does not take a lot of imagination to understand what it takes to crack open a person's skull. If it makes you feel any better, then keep on believing that Prabhakaran is still alive.

Also, what Tamils do in Florida, USA is of no consequence to anyone on this blog nor is it of any consequence to the rest of the world. Please do protest, go on hunger strikes, or do what ever else you feel like doing.

According to a former US intelligence officer stationed in Colombo between 2005 and 2009, the codename for Sarath Fonseka in their secret communications was ‘FOF’. The business of codenames is generally interesting but in Fonseka’s case it is particularly so.

You see, ‘FOF’ denotes ‘Fresh Over the Fence’, a derogatory nickname the US border guards use to refer to Mexicans who illegally cross the southern border. The reason for Fonseka earning this moniker was his Spanish sounding surname and that he held a US Green Card!

Our much decorated ‘Common Candidate’ however, appears blissfully oblivious to such put downs by the Masters of the Universe. In fact, he met US Ambassador Patricia Butenis while the last acts of the drama of his ‘common candidacy’ were being played out. These days Butenis would be doing her nails with more care than usual!

The dishonorable game Fonseka is playing raises many issues about the man’s character that were previously obscured by the enormous sacrifices of the soldiers he led. Now it appears that he is an ace ‘whinger’. His haranguing over the privileges he lost since retirement shows that he unreasonably expects the state to sustain him forever.

There is more disturbing evidence that Fonseka developed a close clandestine relationship with Robert O. Blake well before the final phase of the war. He may well have agreed to hand over Prabhakaran to ‘a third country’ if not for the strong stance taken by the government. Many Sri Lankans will be shocked to hear that the purpose of his recent ‘troubled’ trip to the US was really for finlising Blake’s arrangements for campaign financing. Solid evidence of Fonseka’s duplicity will reach the appropriate authorities in the coming months, hopefully before January 26, 2010.

While Fonseka is still in the game, let us take a careful look at what a traitor he is proving to be. Firstly, he is wanting to be the executive president of Sri Lanka while strongly demonstrating his slavish commitment to another country, the USA. His family is living there and he is extremely keen to become a naturalised citizen of that country. He does not seem to possess adequate decency or intellect to recognise how demeaning it is to Sri Lanka to have a person who wants to be its future leader being a citizen of another country.

If Fonseka cares to look at the comparable situation in the US itself, naturalised citizens (such as him) are not eligible to become President or Vice President! Why should Sri Lanka allow a foreigner to become its leader? Notwithstanding his past military service Fonseka already is, and desperately wants to be an American, a foreigner in terms of Sri Lankan entitlements. Fonseka can’t have the cake and eat it too. The Rajapakse campain needs to focus on this subservient mentality of Fonseka and point this out to the unsuspecting voting public.

Srilankan said...

Even more important is as to whom Fonseka represents? The UNP endorsement of the so-called United National Front (UNF) is not whole hearted and it does not seem to formally include the JVP who are promising to ‘back’ him, but not appear together on the same platform. When it’s the JVP, ‘backing’ can meet different things!

Then we are told that Fonseka is representing something called the Democratic Alliance, apparently the new brand name of an outfit previously known as the United National Alliance (UNA). Without having much information about the UNA, one might say that the chosen symbol of the UNA, ‘swan’ will need to be changed to ‘duck’ to symbolise Fonseka’s vigorous beneath the surface peddling activity that is coming to light.

What policy or action agenda does Fonseka have for Sri Lanka? It appears his plans include the abolition of the Executive Presidency, measures to ensure a return to democracy and media freedom. He has declared “I am committed to ensure that law and order is restored in the country. With this in mind, I want to take steps to prevent political interference in the working of the Police.”

But these are all platitudes. Democracy is already firmly in place and is working fine. Executive presidency has not made Sri Lanka a dictatorship. Its detractors are those who believe they will never be able to win it. After all, we are about to have an election, monitored by the likes of the European Union. Doesn’t this make all Ranil’s and Fonseka’s Xmas’s come at once?

This sort of poppycock is no substitute for sensible home-grown economic plans necessary to feed and clothe the poor in Sri Lanka, those forgotten people outside IDP camps. We need leaders with plans and capacity to economically advance the country, without marketing the American agenda of ‘no bread, have circuses’. Fonseka does not seem to fit the bill. Changing the military uniform to ‘alagoniya’ is not going to make one a national leader.

What gives a truer indication of what and whom Fonseka represents is his support base that is ‘slowly’ emerging.

The first function Fonseka attended was the formation of ‘National Lawyers’ Association’, a break-away group of lawyers, old UNP hacks really, not necessarily loyal to Ranil. The garlanding of a photograph of the late Christian fundamentalist warrior Lasantha Wickramatunga by Fonseka raised eyebrows because the cult at The Sunday Leader had accused Fonseka and the army of Wickrematunga’s murder. Such behaviour shows that there are orders from high above. I mean Robert Blake and the US embassy in Colombo!

This theory of the most ‘unholy’ union between the Christian fundamentalist cult and Fonseka is further corroborated by the almost unimaginably ‘favourable reporting’ on Fonseka’s candidacy by The Sunday Leader. A smiling Fonseka, the alleged murderer of Wickramatunga braces the front page of the rag! The editorial penned by that woman who seems to think that she ‘sits on where the sun rises from’, Frederica Jansz, patronises Fonsea.

After castigating the UNP and JVP for not getting the public to rise up in protest about ‘this blatant abuse of power’ (not allowing unethical religious conversions?), Frederica Jansz advises Fonseka that “He should not tolerate even those saintly looking personalities clad in spotless white with trays of flowers in hand”. In other words, victimise Buddhists!

Someone called Munza Mushtaq, possibly a ‘young buck’ at this prestigious school of ethical journalism headlines a speech by Military Spokesman Brigadier Udaya Nanayakkara ‘By hook or by crook’. Sensational!! Another columnist Vathsala declares: “In Gen Fonseka they have found a candidate that is a winner”. How deluded are these people? It is all the fault of cult brainwashing.

Srilankan said...

There is more to come! None of the other reporters, editors or columnists at The Sunday Leader comes even close to the ‘Jew of the Port’ (van der Pooten) who seems to have an IQ lower than the number of the page his ‘column’ (of excreta) appears on!

He makes such erudite statements as “That the current regime is the most corrupt, unscrupulous, unprincipled and ruthless seems beyond argument” that reflect the effects of incestuous cultish behaviour on mental health.

This absolute ‘nobody’ who has nothing to offer Sri Lankan society but an ego inflated by his ‘achcharu’ heritage seems to think that he is part of the international Zionist ‘elite’ (another deluded group!). He doesn’t seem to like Sri Lanka’s growing links with Iran. He should learn to live with the understanding that President Rajapakse has shown clearly enough that Sri Lanka will not bow down to Zionist agenda. So up yours Pooten!

Going back to Fonseka’s whinging, he has said exclusively, to who else but to The Sunday Leader, that “I am certain they will resort to violence as well as large scale rigging. The IDPs will be issued Identity Cards to vote but I am certain they will not be given those cards, instead they will be given to pro-government supporters to use. I can only hope that independent election observers and monitors will be vigilant and ensure that a free and fair election is held to uphold democracy”.

Then Fonseka whinges at the government lifting of road closures for VIP traffic. “They did this on purpose so I cannot travel, he said, asserting, my life is at grave risk they even withdrew my motorcycle outriders last week threatening them with leave of absence if they did not report back with immediate effect” he said.

For heavens sake, Fonseka needs to stop putting every one who ever wore a military uniform to shame and show the country that he has some dignity by not crying out for government ‘goodies’.

Fonseka needs to stop shamelessly providing succour to the sinister agenda of Christian fundamentalists. He needs to tell the country where he stands on the unethical conversions legislation.

Finally, Fonseka needs to be prepared for a US War crimes charge sheet when he looses the election and goes to America to live.

Fonseka asked for it!

Dear Panhinda,

When you are in charge of a team; specially a team of politicians, one cannot expect a completely clean run. MR couldn’t afford to lose support of his team during the war and immediate afterward. He need more power to sort out good apples from bad ones. There are so many things I do not like with his style of governance but SF or RW won’t be any different with similar people around them.

This is the Sri Lankan trend from 1970 and it will take another decade or so under a right leadership to eradicate corruption, lawlessness, abuse and misuse of power.

I cannot see SF as the right leader because he came to politics to address injustice which is personal to him. I don’t have to elaborate on RW, everybody knows about him as the weakest link.

Therefore MR is the only choice for me.

most other parts of the world people expect govt servants to work the way people want, not the other way around.

if people want something and the aspiration is legitimate, reasonable and doable the govt must listen. this is how it works.

at the moment the opposition says it will implement 17th, abolish exec prez and take action to curb corruption.

if you want the govt to win listen to what people wants. people want clean govt. this is not rocket science. if it cannot it should step aside because another team says its willing and able to do so. its very simple.

SF is still playing the test of time. He is supposed to cable-walk on ethnic issues. Already he has gone beyond the acceptance level of Sri Lankan side. And now the Tamil racists are demanding more. So the stretch left to walk, if any, is a thin line.

Good thing about tamil racists is taht when someone shows interets in buying their crap they raise the price. The basics of negotiation is never understood by them. This feature is one reason why most wessantharas in our past failed to give them anything even after betraying mother lanka to a great deal. And it left us with only choice of war.

SF will prove it again.

For Gonason's case he has a racist tamil candidate in the contest and he will be give him enough eelam opium. Did I say that Sf will find it harder to retain the remaining 40% of anti-MR camp, leave aside grabbing anything from MR. Soon SF will realise that his cable walk of "more than 13th amendment" won none from eelamists while he lost all from Sinhala side.

BTW, I wonder this case. Is SF campaigning for money? He will be the most sponsored candidate ever and maybe he can take good 100-100 millions of rupees as net profit after loss. Not bad even that.

In future we will see economists, social scientists, election specialists, private detectives, secret surveyors and all sorts of other forms having field days of %s in places like Lanka [Whore] News Web, Sirasa/MTV, Sunday Leader, BBC, TN etc. They will bring 101 reasons how SF will win and MR's economics is not going right.

Most of their election predictions will point to rate like 52% for MR 48% SF etc. And the MR number will reduce day by day.

This kinda fake trends are career acts for RW, UNP, Mongala, Pussycats etc.

But we are yet to see ppl like school principles, popular artists, monks/clergy, ground based civil organizations, patriotic movements etc joining SF. A true movement is like that. You feel it in air, on ground, in reality. Not in F/B, LNW, Sirasa, Leader and TN.

Good thing is that the virtual orgasm will keep the UNP clan not doing anything much. Sunday Leader will feed more abin. No wonder why they call for poll rigging allegations after election. They must be in this dream world for every election and suddenly think that the result is not possible.

Election is going in best direction for MR.

- SF shud have tried breaking MR's voted. Topics like banning separatism, recolonization, unitary state etc etc shud have been his campaign statements. He has to get ~10-12 votes from ppl who strictly vore for above mentioned reasons.

- But teh const pull of leg by UNP/LTTE minority elements are messing him. He's forced to agree for all their claims, and still consent not given. They ask for more. Further he goes with them, he looses more sinhala votes, and eventually tamils will never bvote him.

- Gonason has only ~100000 votes in colombo which is a mere 1%. UNA shud not have had him at all. If so today nobody gives rat's care for him. For his 100k SF has to loose a big 1-2mill sinhala votes. But teh catch is, if SF ignors him now, after allowing him to brag all about tamil rights, he'll not only loose his votes, but also other vote bases.

- TNA is funnily silent about SF. Body language tells me he will not get a grain of sand from teh very ppl whom he's gonna "donate" something more than 13th amendment.

- MR can talk about his development in North and grab some 30% Northern votes [using EPDP, Karuna, PLOTE, and TNA breakaways]. He can field a TNA [or wait till they do so] and see the rest gone other ways. But Sf has no such plan for North. He shud have given it away and batted for Southern votes. Sadly he missed the point. In fact he was forced by those fools who has no idea about SL voters.

Thusitha said...

Has anyone given thought what will happen when SF looses (For me, it is a foregone conclusion). Would he walk away quietly, will he continue to do politics or will he betray the nation due to his hatred for MR/GR.

First two options are fine. The third option is scary as he can drag lot of people in to war crimes charges if he opens his mouth. I think the way he is behaving, he would be making lot of people in the army nervous. No wonder he has to worry about his security and his own soldiers. It would be very interesting two months I would say.
