Call to Campaign

As you are probably aware, the United States of America recently halted training for all our elite troops, particularly the Special Forces, Commandos and the Special Task Force.

The decision to stop all training activities in USA for officers and men of the Special Forces came after a damning statement by the former Commander of the Army, Ret. General Sarath Fonseka. Fonseka directly implicated the Special Forces in an alleged massacre of top ranking Tamil Tigers during the final phase of the war.

Though the Sri Lankan elite troops have ample training, experience and skill, the halting of training and recognition as candidates by US military schools is still a blow to the pride of our military officers and men who fought to eradicate terrorism from the face of the earth and rewrote the manuals on Counter Terrorist (CT) and Counter Insurgency (CI) during the course of it.

Among those young officers scheduled to be trained in US military schools in 2010 included a number of LRRP officers.

Not to be outdone, the Commander-in-Chief, President Mahinda Rajapakse has obtained opportunities for training for our elite troops with the Russian Spetsnaz or Special Forces training schools during a recent visit to Moscow. Sri Lankan troops are also receiving training in China.

DefenceWire's humble appeal to our expatriate readers, particularly those residing in USA is to campaign diligently to reinstate these training opportunities for our elite troops. This is in line with the recommendations of the Committee on Foreign Relations, December 2009. Page 17 of that report states:

The U.S. Congress should:
1. Authorize the U.S. military to resume training of Sri Lankan military officials to help ensure that human rights concerns are integrated into future operations and to help build critical relationships.

Human rights awareness could be built-in to any future trainings of our elite troops by the United States. The current political tussles in Colombo or any diplomatic misunderstandings between Colombo and Washington D.C. have nothing to do with these officers who must be judged on the basis of individual and collective merit in the true war on terror.

Back after a fleeting visit to CMB to watch the Big Match (sigh another draw!) and India to catch the first round of IPL matches.

It was indeed a pleasure to watch Chaminda Vass plying his trade. Exceptional skills to get 2 maiden overs in a T20. Vass is truely a unsung SL cricketing hero.

Equally impressed with the professional organisational skills of the Indians staging such an event. Gets better every year.

I wondered why SL are not playing test or ODI (apart from ICC tournaments)outside Asian sub continent until 2011. A whole 36 months playing in user friendly conditions. Indians (BCCI) continue to squeeze our balls on this issue.
There is a pending invitation from Aus to play ODI this winter.
I guess the Sports Ministry is awaiting Indian Approval.

I could'nt but help notice the following comment from an erstwhile blogger from..

(Remember, I differentiate between those Tamils who live in Sri Lanka and can't emigrate, and members of the Sri Lankan Tamil Diaspora who strongly support the Eelam cause, because their own lives are immune to the consequences of that choice. They don't really care about what happens to ANYONE in Sri Lanka.)

How true!
It equally applies to the Sinhala Diashoras.
(ps. Eelam is never a cause nor a solution)

A further comment..
(The fate of Sri Lanka will be decided by the majority of the people who live there, not by expatriates of any ilk, including us patriots.)..
and may i add..tamil diaspora.

And then you have bloggers who continue to play cyber monopoly...

Oh joy!

There were problems in the defence of Tissainayagam. What was most embarrassing was that one of the witnesses called by the defence, the deputy chairman of the Human Rights Council, actually ended up testifying against the defendant! The witness stated that he had been visiting the Vakarai area and meeting the divisional secretary for the area and that the World Food Programme had been distributing food through this divisional secretary and that there were government hospitals and governments doctors even though it was an LTTE controlled area in 2006. This witness had also said that he had met LTTE commanders of the areas as well. So the defence deftly proved that the defendant had been factually incorrect in his reporting, thus making the imputation of an intent to incite hatred that much easier! When shown what Tissanayagam had written about Vakarai, this defense witness had agreed that the statements were indeed incendiary.

Absolute hogwash!

The International Commission of Jurists (ICJ), on Sep 11, 2009 released its Trial Observation Report
The Trial Observation Report focuses on describing the procedural aspects of the case and does not include a substantive assessment of the anti-terrorism laws. It raises a number of concerns regarding fair trial standards, including the judge’s interlocutory decision to allow into evidence what counsel for Mr Tissainayagam described as a forced confession, and subsequent denial of the accused’s right to appeal this decision. The Observers also expressed concern that Judge Deepali Wijesundara is the sister of the officer who signed the Indictment against Mr. Tissainayagam. While outside the general scope of this report, the Observers raised broader concerns about the Government’s unprecedented decision to prosecute Mr Tissainayagam on terrorism charges, especially in the context of attacks and threats of attacks against journalists and critics of Government policy, including public accusations by persons associated with the Government that equate such critics, and the lawyers representing them, as terrorists and traitors, for example, in commentaries posted on an official website of the Ministry of Defence, Public Security, Law and Order.
These laws give sweeping powers to the Government to criminalize dissent and paint otherwise lawful speech as terrorism, potentially undermining the foundations of rule of law and democratic governance in the nation. The case of Mr Tissainayagam illustrates this danger.

Sri Lanka expects a positive outcome in its dialogue with the European Commission officials on the GSP Plus facility, Export Development and International Trade Minister Prof G L Peiris told the post-Cabinet press briefing yesterday.

I have lost count of how many times GLP keeps repeating this or contradicting himself by stating GSP+ is not essential.

One would have expected a joint statement following the high level delegate visit to Brussels.

Never mind..It leaves room for GLP to state GSP + is not essential to SL after 8 April.

Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapakse has ruled out an early pardon for his election rival Sarath Fonseka and dismissed the former army chief as a "fool" who was unprepared for politics./

The differential treatment meted out to JS Tissa, SF and Karuna, Pillayan,Daya Master and George Master on the other demonstrate in no uncertain terms that in the eyes of the Lankan state democratic dissension is a greater crime than armed terrorism. In fact, post war, the regime may begin to depict and punish democratic dissenters as terrorists even as it frees those former terrorists astute enough to change masters and sing a different song.

Thats democracy Rajapakse style!

IC is closely watching the unfolding events.

To accuse Western journalists/commentators of being bribed by remnants of LTTE is to throw fuel into the fire. Those who know journalists realise very well that the best way to 'bribe' them is not with material gains but to provide them with exclusive stories. A few experienced credible advisors in the state media outfit know this very well but they would be stepping out of line and risk being called 'traitors.'

What is especially worrying is that these accounts of conspiracies to stabilize the regime and change it emanating from the heart of the regime are destabilizing in themselves. They suggest that the war in effect is not over and that Sri Lanka has no choice but to embark on a collision course with an influential section of the international community, which has traditionally been an ally of this country.

Premachandran revealed this shocking news HOW CAN IT BE SHOCKING!!!!! IT'S LOVELY IF TRUE adding to earlier disturbing information ??????????that SLA had converted Keappaapilavu area near Vattaappazhai in Mullaiththeevu district into a huge SLA base.

Many Sinhalese villages are said to be constructed in the above area, according to Suresh Premachandran."

accept multiculturalism or DIE (second option is preferred for tamil elamists!!!)

jay,

if GSP+ is not there, it gives further encouragement for the govt to COLONIZE the fertile north.

you can't give some laid off garment employees jobs but the overall unemployment rate can be reduced by creating welioya type farming villages.

of course the effcet on the economy too can be fixed!!

so go tell the LTTE diaspora to canvass against SL goods. that will FORCE the govt to speed up colonization.

Moshe Dyan said...

remember ban ki moon cried when we bombed voice of tigers????

wait and see how he will cry when we start bulldozing LTTE constructions in the north. EVERYTHING.

does he still want to go ahead with the panel??? it's his choice. whatever it is the security council and the 200 member general assembly will not approve it!!!

in the meantime we can screw all signs of the tamil elam!!! what an excuse to do what we always enjoyed doing anyway.

removing ethnic cemetaries is a war crime. but LTTE cemetaries are cemetoaries at all. no bodies there!!

tamils cremate their dead. they don;t burry them. we can make fun of ignorance too.

True.

However last month when I traveled to SL I was reading the "Serendib" the SriLankan airlines in-flight (Jan-Feb 2010 edition) magazine and was livid when I saw an article of Jaffna and read the para on page52 that said (I copied it down):

The martyrs cemetery at Kopai, lined with headstones for fallen LTTE cadres, is a sobering place to visit. The soldiers who patrol the area treat it with respect. "Whatever said, these re human lives" says a chubby corporal. "Young boys who could have done something for this country."

Can you believe it ???

"human lives" ???

Motherfucking baby/pregnant women killer monsters now being addressed by one of our own SLA by that term???

I was fucking blown away by that and I have already sent a note to "Colombo" about it.

In my view, the whole fucking cemetery should be razed to the ground after removing the headstones for toilet seats in SLA new camps.

The wastage of land with fake/real/mass graves shud be used for agrarian activities. The furtile land will only justify anything worth of the dead, for them being never so when alive.

Yet we shud maintain a list of names, tose who were stolen, forced, kidnapped, fooled, and sacrificed neverthe less, in order to create a non-existing myth in few migrant idiots. The list shud tell the tale of "never try it again" and maybe published in everywhere as teh most foolish human wastage in the entire country.

In my view the enemy of yesterday, the maha veera family structure, and arrested pussycats, may be teh ones who know the plight most. I'm sure few things stop most of them talking, but if tapped, they'd vent their feelings and hatred against teh true enemies of theirs whom destroted their loved ones. We need to get their words out.

Today thise sho stand for eelam are teh ones who cunningly stayed away from the agony.

The red list of names and the crying hearts of maha-victim families will tell them what they shud know.
