battlefield progress

Heavy fighting was reported from Chilawatte as 59 Division engaged the LTTE yesterday. 7 soldiers were killed and another 70 injured in the fighting. LTTE is concentrating its forces to the east of the Mulaitivu Lagoon. The strategy will be to travel from the west of the lagoon to the east.

Heavy fighting was also reported south of Iranamadu, at Ampakamam north in the last few days as Task Force 3 under Brigadier Liyanage headed into LTTE areas. 10 LTTE cadres were confirmed killed in the attack while some Charles Anthony, Imran Pandian, Malathi unit cadres have started abandoning their posts and escaping the LTTE along with their civilian captives.

While some LTTE teams in Mulaitivu still engage in the failed bund/trench defense system to stop an army, which became outdated in World War I, LTTE units east of Kilinochchi, who learnt their lesson the hard war from the 57 and the 58, have started deploying small teams for hit and run operations, particularly at Vattakachchi.

Troops advancing on Vishvamadu and about 7km away from their target while resistance in the general area north of Paranthan has gradually diminished as troops reach Chundikulam (Sundikulam).

My Comments at ExpressBuzz.com

Is this not the same Ramdoss who agitated for a "Vanniyar-only" country in Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh? Has he given up that plan to disenfranchise people of all other castes from Vanniyar-Nadu? He is now on the "Save Sri Lanka Tamils" crusade to propel himself into power, someway, somehow! Has this man no shame? He should be trying to promote peace, harmony and prosperity among the poverty stricken destitute people of India, instead of slicing and dicing communities, pitting them against each other, in his effort to divide and rule. Throw these unpatritoic scum out of office! Elect them at your own risk!

Ramadoss calls for state wide strike

My Comment at ExpressBuzz.com

Tamils escaping from LTTE controlled areas to Sri Lanka Govt held areas report that they were held prisoner, their youth are being forcibly conscripted to fight, the elderly are forced to build bunkers, they are used as human shields in front lines, and they are shot if found trying to escape. Given this reality, why don't the Tamil Nadu leaders put pressure on their LTTE pals to let them go to SL Govt held areas? Instead, they are enabling the LTTE to engage in these war crimes, and to perpetuate their imprisonment by demanding a ceasefire. Therefore, these TamilNadu leaders are responsible for aiding and abetting in these war crimes. We all know their purpose: it is to rescue the LTTE in the guise of helping to save the lives of civilians! Don't be fooled by these con-artists and serial jokers!

Govt. says tigers now fighting in civilian garb
By Jamila Najmuddin

The government said yesterday LTTE cadres were now fighting in civilian garb and therefore any claims of civilian casualties in LTTE areas should be looked at with caution.

It denied a recent foreign media report that 18 civilians had been killed during military confrontations in the north, and said the journalists had been misled into believing that the bodies were those of civilians as most cadres fought in the guise of civilians.

“I am sure these bodies are those of LTTE cadres killed during military operations. There are certain parties trying to tarnish the image of the government by claiming the bodies were those of civilians. No civilian has been killed in confrontations up-to-date,” Health Ministry secretary Dr. Athula Kahandaliyanage told media briefing.

However journalists from this particular international media organization who were present at the news briefing maintained that the casualty figures quoted in the article were released by government doctors working in LTTE-controlled areas, raising a question whether the doctors had misled the media.

Human Rights Minister Mahinda Samarsinghe responded with the comment that the doctors themselves might not have been aware that LTTE cadres were fighting in the guise of civilians.

The government also denied a recent ICRC report that since January 9 no safe passage had been arranged for transporting patients and health staff and said civilians were allowed free movement between Vavuniya and uncleared areas daily.

“We have allowed free access for civilians and health staff to travel. There is an ambulance which travels daily to Vavuniya from LTTE-controlled areas. The ICRC report is misleading,” Minister Samarasinghe, said.

He charged that civilians living in LTTE-controlled areas were warned against fleeing into Vavuniya as most of them could be used as human shields.

The government also expressed disappointment at the ICRC failing to obtain the release of injured soldiers who were being treated at LTTE Hospitals.

Defence Secretary Gotabaya Rajapakse urged the ICRC to obtain the release of the soldiers and have them transferred to Vavuniya where they could be admitted to a government hospital.

“We are disappointed that the ICRC did not act with any urgency to bring the injured soldiers to Vavuniya. The ICRC should fulfill its duties and must not wait till the government approaches it,” Minister Samarasinghe said.

He said during the past month no shortage of medicines and food had been reported from the north and seriously ill patients were transferred to the Vavuniya Hospital where medical facilities were upgraded.

Infants among victims: TNA

The Tamil National Alliance (TNA) yesterday expressed serious concern at the number of civilians being killed and injured in military confrontations in the north.

TNA parliamentarian Suresh Premachandran alleged that many civilians, including children and infants had been killed or injured in confrontations during the past few weeks and denied government claims that LTTE cadres were fighting in civilian clothing.

“Infants and children cannot be part of the fighters so it is clear civilians are dying. On an average, five civilians are wounded everyday from aerial bombardment and multi barrel rocket fire by security forces,” Mr. Premachandran charged.

Good Morning!

It is a Brave New world!

A brave new world where a sun of mixed race becomes the most powerful person in the world. And the myth of super race/pure race garbage spread by likes of mentally handicapped lunatics Hitler and Prabakaran vanished to the thin air.

A brave new world where cleaned shaved, healthy looking “blackberry” holding educated man rose above a Fat, mustached, gun holding uneducated thug and cowboys.

A brave new world where ur dreams can be achieved by the pen but not by the gun.

A brave new world where a leader telling followers to “dream” and “live” instead of asking them to be “paranoid” and “commit suicide”.

A brave new world where children promised bright future unlike of Prabakaran ordering pregnant women to blast themselves with the un-born future kings/presidents.

A brave new world where generations of kids growing up knowing they can achieve the ultimate through education and skills unlike in mythical Tamil Eellam where generations of kids growing up to become violent killers just like their supreme SunGoat.

A brave new world where every race is equal and live in harmony unlike Tamil only Tamil Eeellam where one pure/super race live in isolation.

A brave new world where a man/women, black/white, gay/straight, god/atheist equally treated unlike in Thamiza land where only the “pure race macho Thamiza man who believe in SunGoat” get the cake and to eat it and keep it.

A brave new world where it is kool to be cool and civilized but not barbaric

Dear Thamiza brothers, it is time to be civilized, give up the barbaric life style and the dream of living in isolated mono ethnic boring pure race pig hole.

Dear Thamiza brothers, it is time to be racially liberal, religiously tolerance and sexually fulfilling.

Dear Thamiza brothers, it is time to pressure the happiness!

P.S. It is same old story when it is come to fcuking lethargic SL cricket team. Captain can’t score double digit and loosing is kool just like LTTP loosing land. MooBarak played instead of Angelo Mathews and a middle order batsman and the world oldest cricket player ever to walk on the earth opens the innings! I have complained to Ofcom and also BBC Three about the bullshit they

All Sri Lankans,

I know that you are dead scared about Peter Amman's proclamations. To make things worst, President Obama has commanded US defence authorities to help LPTP (Loosing Pussycats of Tamil Peelam)to regain any lost ground. To initiate the effort, Obama directed 4 Nimitz Class aircraft careers including USS Abraham Lincoln.

I hope that such fairy tales will cure Peter Amman's schizophrenia. May he find inner peace in Peelam.

Here's what Peter was too chickenshit to read- that Tamileelam was a failed cause from the very beginning:

From transcurrents:

"I still recall that 32 years ago I was in a election meeting of TULF which was held in Kuncharkadai (Vadamaradchi) in 1977 and people was in a big line up to do “Raththappottu” to the popular speakers in that election campaign - Vannai Ananthan and Kasi ananthan. Vannai ananthan spoke about the “Ilawampalam palutha kathai”. I told my friend that separate country in Sri Lanka is not feasible and Amirthalingam and co. is cheating the people to win the election without any oppostion by creating a momentum emotionally. I am not a political scientist like Bala anna and I do not have anything before and after my name except my father’s initial but the basic knowledge I have in politics, I mentioned that to my friend. Even after 32 years now, I am saying that Tamil eelam is not a reality UNLESS Indian central government decide to create one for tamils in Sri Lanka.

"Prabaharan does not have strong leadership skills which he proved himself several times in the past. It is very unfortunate that almost 23,000 young tamil boys and girls had faith on him and sacrificed their valuable life believing that he will get the freedom for tmails. If one of thses boys and girls is one of my brother and sister, how would I feel now? I really feel for those families who lost their loved ones for this struggle. It seems like all those sacrifices going to be in vain. Only time will tell."

Rana said...

Wijayapala,

Patriots,
Peelam retards have been having wet dreams about President Obama coming to their rescue. However our side has already talked to qutely in a friendly setting and he has a very favorable view of Sri Lanka. He loved 'Radith Rice with Lunu Dehi', 'keselmuwa maluwa' and 'pol sambol'.

US Senator Barack Obama and his wife Michelle were on holiday a few months back in the romantic Seychelles resort of Fregate Island, and during his stay the US Presidential-hopeful was so pleased with a culinary creation by the Sri Lankan head chef that he made special mention of it in the hotel visitors’ book, calling it “a Sri Lankan supper”. The local chef who impressed was Radith Munasinghe. The culinary treat was a rice-and-curry meal done Radith-style – "Radith Rice with Lime Pickle (Lunu Dehi)".
...
The VIP guests spent a week at the Fregate Hotel. According to Radith, the charismatic politician told the hotel management that he and his wife were looking forward to sampling various cuisines. As head chef, Radith decided to prepare something special. He arranged for a Sri Lanka night, featuring his original basmathi-rice-lunu-dehi creation as the centre-piece. Other items on the menu were "keselmuwa maluwa", fresh fish, a sweet potato curry and "pol sambol".
...
On learning that Radith hailed from Sri Lanka , the Senator showed a keen interest in learning more about the country. The Sri Lankan dinner that night was served in clay pots and on yam leaves. The Senator had no problem with the spicy dishes, according to Radith.

Now this is the highest place for the vicinity. In all four directions the bridge can be seen for kms. And Mr President is planning to cut the ribbon and walk along the bridge.

Has he ever heard of snipers?

Can he expect SLAF to block flying saucers?

WTF is so important about a fly-over?

I still hope that he leaves the bridge for some lower rank in order for them to score some points.

Do we have someone in this channel who can influence Mr President. Pls stop him declaring it open. If not pls blow the bloody bridge before he risks his life. We can rebuild it later.

I can't understand it. If you open interactive defence map (cyberlk.defence) you will see a movable scale it is diameter is 8km make it's area about 50sq.km.

Now remining peelam is much less than what cybermap is showing because it is last updated on 16th Jan.

Even that pink area is not 6 times of the circle which is given as the scale.

Observer,

Latest, defence.lk map shows eelam area as approximate triangle with about 12km in height and about 16km is base including the Mula laggon. So, the approximate area is less than 100 sq.km. (1/2*12*16). Out of that also a major portion is no man’s land due to FDL and ongoing fight.

I reckon the effective area for tigers and civilians to be less than 80 sq. km!

Sam Perera said...

There is some problem in Cyberlk map scale. You can do a rough estimation in Google Earth if you like and the area under LTTE is more than 250 km^2.

Hi TG,

I expressed the similar concerns in a post at this blog on Jan 8, 2009 (see below).

Because advances by Div 59 and TF4 have pushed the FDL much further forward of A34 towards Puthukkuyidiruppu, the possibility of success of this scenario is much less likely. That is, both Div 59 and TF4 have sufficient depth of defense to permit cutting off the arms of the double pincers of an enveloping movement. There is still a possibility of such an event, but it is, in my view, much less likely given that the LTTE command structure is breaking down.

The next phase is likely to see more and more LTTE cadre hiding their weapons in small caches and joining the "imprisoned civilians" in the hope that they can recover the weapons after release from IDP camps. I posted a news item today that reports that LTTE carde have shed their uniforms and are now fighting in civilian clothes. This is a precursor to the next phase of joining hiding weapons and joining the civilians as I have stated above.

It is, therefore, critical that the SLDF does not allow military age civilians to return to the North before:

1. in-depth clearing of the areas of hidden weapons

2. an adequate police force is installed in the area

3. settling SLDF personnel, with their families, in permanent closely spaced encampments in the area

4. the preparations for an intelligence gathering network is completed in the area

My Jan 8, 2009 Post at DW:

4. Therefore, to forestall the threat to Puthukkyiduruppu, the LTTE will attack Mulliyawalai, Alampil, and Oddusuddan-Keriamadu areas in strength, with the hope of surrounding Div 59 in an isolated pocket, cutting it off from supplies and reinforcements along A34 and other roads from the South, and demolishing it completely. LTTE cadres attacking Alampil are very likely to be delivered by sea. The LTTE needs a big harvest at this time to demoralize, and reverse the continuous series of victories by the SLA. If they can summon the forces to stage one big attack, I am guessing that it will be as I have outlined here. I hope that the SLA and the SLN are prepared to confront and frustrate an attack such as this.

5. Ultimately, not even a bloody success against Div 59 will reverse the course of this war. Such an attack will precede the withdrawal from Mullaitivu area to the fortifications enveloping A35 and the MDJ as I have described in Items 1 & 2 above. To overcome these LTTE forces, the SLA will have to open up the jungle, and attack the A35 fortifications at many points along a broad front to reduce the intensity of the last battles, and to create as many opportunities and paths as possible for the entrapped civilians to escape.

Just my two cents worth!

Ape' Virayanta Jaya Wewa!

GOSL should broadly follow the method followed by FBI in handling kidnappers as we approach vishvamadu.

it is a classic case of mass kidnap by the LTTE.

rule#1: things should happen according to OUR times/plans/convienience/readyness, not kidnappers

rule#2: no bargaining along kidnappers' original conditions

rule#3: no real assurances of kidnappers' safety

rule#4: no promise will be kept if it can be safely broken.

we should not forget that SOME civilians genuinely support tigers. they might pose a threat to themselves, other civilians and SLDFs in the process. IF civilian casualties can be managed, these guys should be made bear the bulk of civilian casualties.

OK, no one is interested in protecting war information on this site, fine.

In certain situations, accepting causalities is like giving feedback to Terrorists to make necessary adjustments for the next operation. Suppose a blast is successful and you acknowledge it, they know that is a very successful recipe.

[It would help if you specified what exactly you agreed with. That email struck me as white supremacist crap that ignores the inconvenient fact that Australia was established through the brutal massacre of the aborigines who were there first.]

Now I understand you are giving a hard time to Sinhalese 'patriots' here.

Regardless who people are, both Tamils and Sinhalese have el cheapo politics.

Tamils tried to buy Obama. Sinhalese did buy Prabha (I don't whine and complain about it since we kicked their bottoms).

Let's admit it. We all do dirty politics and Tamils have mastered it and taken their dirty stuff to the white house.

During the last few years, SLG has tried to mastered what Diaspora has done with US politicians with very little success.

Should this happen, it would have disastrous consequences for the Government of Sri Lanka (GoSL).

The opposition would slam the government for losing so much territory after taking months to capture it and losing thousands of lives. Sri Lanka's main investors, such as China and Iran, who have given so much money in military aid, would be quick to withdraw it, after seeing how the military has been crushed again.

The Strategic Partners, who have risked the ire of the Eelam Tamil diaspora, would be quick to call for a ceasefire, in an attempt to salvage their interests.

India is likely to suffer the worst. By ignoring the sentiments of Tamil Nadu it has risked an awful lot and it will have seen no reward.

Under pressure from the outside world and the opposition, a ceasefire is almost inevitable.

This shows what diaspora expects from LTTP in coming few weeks. They expect one major counter strike!

They have been expecting this for a long time.. nothing really materialized yet.

Ananda-USA said...

Patriots,

Sometime ago, before the fall of Kilinochchi I think, another blogger proposed a "Thunder Run" similar to the one made by armored divisions of the US Army through Baghdad, Iraq. The US Army "Thunder Run" surprised and demoralized the Iraqi army, and hastened the fall of Baghdad by penetrating the innermost sanctum of Saddam's powerbase, well before all Iraqui units were defeated by a broad advance along the front lines. This is an application the "blitzkreig" technique, perfected by the Germany Army, devoid of the enveloping strategy. At that time a Thunder Run was proposed for the Wanni Operation, the LTTE retained enough of its internal cohesion, to be able to coordinate the development of kill zones and to isolate and cutoff units in narrow salients that develop, making the strategy quite risky to the SLA. Also, the SLAF did not possess the airlift capability needed to rescue or reinforce such a thrust depending on insecure supply lines, if it ran into difficulties.

I think that the military command structure of the LTTE has now degraded sufficiently to allow such a Thunder Run by an armored task force advancing rapidly down route A35 from Dharmapuram Southwards towards Puthukkuyidyiruppu. A suitable task force could be formed from the Div55 armored brigade supported by the Div53 mechanized infantry brigade.

Armored thrusts on narrow fronts such as these have been avoided by the SLA during their very successful campaign up to now for very good reasons. If the enemy is sufficiently well organized to develop kill zones to trap and cutoff such formations, they can be destroyed. However, such thrusts can quickly rout a demoralized enemy on the run, before they can regroup to develop additional defences that can extend a conflict.

What are the dangers that would confront such a Thunder Run down route A35, and what would be the anticipated benefits? First and foremost, these units would have to cope with mines and Improvised Explosive Devices placed along A35; these would be placed directly on the road itself and on the two sides of the road at pre-prepared kill zones. That would require engineers or specially modified armored vehicles to detect, explode or remove the mines to allow the armor to proceed. If the LTTE still has sufficient cohesion on the battlefield, they will prepare kill zones which are so mined and pre-targeted with mortars and artillery to destroy the armor as they slow down to clear mines. Therefore, such a thrust would need to be coordinated with Aerial Surveillance and Close Air Support (CAS) to detect and destroy the sources of indirect fire. In addition, the LTTE would deploy RPG-equipped anti-armor teams with LMG support. However, such teams can be defeated by supporting the armored column with mechanized infantry assault teams with their own anti-personnel RPGs, as the Isrealis did to counter the Egyptians, after suffering heavy casualties to shoulder-fired guided missiles and anti-armor RPGs, in the initial phases of the Yom-Kippur War.

The benefits of such a Thunder Run, would be to rapidly cutoff the LTTE cadre in the 2-4 km wide zone to the Southwest of route A35, before they can withdraw across A35 to the uncleared area Northwest of A35. The LTTE cadre in this region would be trapped between the advancing Div57, TF2, TF3, TF4 forces, and the Thunder Run forces disrupting their ability to coordinate attacks on the former units.

This threat from the North to Puthukkudyiruppu is likely to compel the LTTE either to abandon all areas to the North of Puthukkudyiruppu to a line immediately North of Puthukkudyiruppu. If this thrust is coordinated with a thrust by Div59 towards the sea South of Puthukkuyidyiruppu, it may compel the LTTE to abandon Mullaitivu altogether to defend Puthukkudyiruppu...a severe blow to LTTE's remaining access to the sea.

Furthermore, these developments will take place much faster than the LTTE can relocate civilians camping along A35, or prepare sufficient accommodations for them, thus allowing the civilians to seek refuge with the SLA, before they can be incorporated into a human shield in built-up areas surrounding Puthukkudyiruppu. In short, it enables another means of separating the LTTE from their hapless captive human shields.

Such a Thunder Run involves considerable risk to the attacking column, and hinges on the ability of the enemy to quickly adapt and organize a defense. It may not be attractive at all to the SLA in view of their detailed knowledge of conditions in the battlefield, and the success of their more conventional well tested strategies to date.

4 LTTE boats sunk, SLN FAC damaged in sea battle

Report on latest Sea Confrontation on last Monday

(January 21, Colombo, Sr Lanka Guardian) Four LTTE sea tiger craft including an explosive laden suicide boat were destroyed in a sea battle that ensued east of Mullaithivu coastline. A SLN Fast Attack Craft (FAC) also sustained heavy damages in the incident. The exact number of LTTE cadres killed is not known as of yet. SLN units have recovered two LTTE bodies from the area after the battle.

It is believed that the LTTE flotilla was targeting one of the larger SLN vessels deployed in the Mullathivu seas. Luckily the boat movement was detected by FACs patrolling closer to the shore and SLN engaged the sea tigers before they could mount a surprise attack. A suicide boat tried to ram into one of the FACs but it was destroyed before it could reach its target. However, the suicide boat exploded in close proximity of the FAC and it sustained damages due to the blast.

Meanwhile troops laying siege to Mullaithivu recovered 9 more LTTE bodies yesterday (20th). More than 100 LTTE bodies have been sent to Vavuniya and Anuradhapura hospitals in the past two weeks alone. Around 75 of these have already been buried since handing them over to the LTTE via ICRC was is longer possible. -DefenceNeT - Sri Lanka Guardian

We can create a tourist industry around it and those tourists will be perfect echo tourists who will respect our culture than those who are wearing thongs wanting to burn their butts on our sand.

How do you use a nuclear device peacefully?

energy.. its elementary i thought.

Peaceful use of uncontrolled nuclear fission/fusion devices, as opposed to controlled nuclear reactors used for thermal power/electricity generation, were investigated in the past, before the adverse health effects of radiation were fully quantified and appreciated.

Among the uses investigated (theoretically, as well as experimentally through field experiments) were the use of nuclear explosives to create sea channels (like the Panama and Sethu Samudram canals), deep-water harbors, dams & reservoirs, and more interestingly, underground in-situ retorts for distilling and extracting oil from oil-shale. Many other "civilian" uses of uncontrolled fission/fusion nuclear explosives have been proposed, but have not been deployed in practice because of the inability to control and limit adverse health impacts.

Thunder Run is a great idea. They'd expect SLA to advance cautiously as they have been doing for the last few weeks. So always do what enemy expect the least. Only flip side might be the possibility of higher casualties.

Yes, brother. I think doing the unexpected is the key to success.

The SLA knows the situation on the ground and will decide accordingly. We are mostly blind and working off limited outdated publicly available information. That is the way it should be; no battle planner would let the world know what he knows, unless it is to mislead the enemy, or is obsolete information useless to the enemy. :)

Bros & Patriots,

Yesterday I watched the Obama inauguration and I would like to make few comments from what I noticed:

a. The lady who was mistress of the ceremonies made some interesting remarks contrasting democratically elected leaders and dictators holding power through terror.....must be music to our DieAssPora bros......

b. I was "Stunned" when Obama made no reference to the Eeelam in his inaugural peach...So much for Tamils for Obama and blah blah blah

c. We Sri Lankans can learn a lot of from this event.....we should not trample anybody just because we can....even in this blog I often sea that happening.....Hope one day we will have a Tamil president or a prime minister for SL, not as a token to appease the Tamils, but simply because they are fit to govern a united SL.....and because anybody can rise up in Sri Lanka. Its sad that some possible Tamil candidates were eliminated by their own Terrorist bros.

d. A BBC reporter was interviewing a civilian in Iran and the reporter mentioned that in Persian language Obama means "He is with us"....interesting similarity with our won language ...may be a coincidence....I don't know

That's it for now...
Cheers all

Looks like Prabakaran’s last battle
R. Hariharan

As the Sri Lanka security forces move in for what they promise to be the closing call on the Tigers, Prabakaran’s dream of a Tamil Eelam looks farther than ever before.

The battle being waged by the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) to defend Mullathivu in the face of the Sri Lanka security forces’ onslaught may well be the last conventional military operation by Tamil insurgent leader Velupillai Prabakaran in the two-year-long “Eelam War IV.” Mullathivu is the LTTE’s last bastion, what is left from an original domain of nearly nine districts it had ruled for over a decade. The security forces are building up a four to six division-strong force for what they promise to be the closing call on the LTTE.

After the fall of Kilinochchi and Elephant Pass successively during the early part of January, the LTTE lost control of the Kandy-Jaffna A9 road, and with it lost the ability to have an impact on the lives of most of the people of the Northern Province. The LTTE had dominated the road, considered to be the lifeline for Jaffna, a city that had once flourished as a thriving business hub next only to Colombo. After driving out the LTTE from the A9, the security forces were focussing on three aspects — consolidating their hold on the highway by eliminating LTTE defences east of it, opening the axes of offensive to Mullathivu, and getting ready for a final offensive on Mullathivu.

During the first half of the month, the security forces eliminated the line of LTTE defences along the old Kandy-Jaffna road running parallel to the A9 to its east. With the clearing of the defences aligned from Iranamadu in the south to Vaddakachi and Dharmapuram in the north, the forces marginalised the LTTE’s capability to interfere with the A9. So the forces may well keep up the promise to open the road within a month for civilian traffic, thus providing much needed relief to Jaffna’s beleaguered citizens. Though the LTTE had stoutly defended its strong points such as Iranamadu and Dharmapuram, its intention was probably only to delay the start of the offensive on Mullathivu.

During these operations, the forces captured the LTTE’s main airstrip east of the Iranamadu tank on January 15. This was an important airstrip used by the tiny LTTE air wing for its plucky operations that caused more psychological impact than operational damage. It was built in a clearing of heavy undergrowth, cleverly using the old Kandy-Jaffna road passing through the area. The 1.5-km long and 40-metre wide airstrip was central to a complex of two smaller airstrips located to the north and south of the Iranamadu tank. These were captured in earlier months. Five days earlier, the security forces had captured another battle-ready airstrip west of Mullathivu.

The six LTTE airstrips that have been captured so far go to show the enormous effort the insurgents had put into developing their air capability. Undoubtedly, the ceasefire period during the peace process was put to build up the ground infrastructure for air operations. These are a testimony not only to the LTTE’s technical capability but its relentless effort to build military capability regardless of peace parleys. Significantly, none of the two light aircraft used by it earlier for raids have been found. Presumably they were dismantled and mothballed in hideouts as the operational conditions and the active air and ground surveillance would have made it difficult to fly them out of harm’s way.

Mullathivu town, which is the focal point of the current offensive, is located on a narrow strip on the eastern coast of the Northern Province, flanked by the sea on the east and the Nanthikadal lagoon on the west. Its defence perimeter is made up of a complex of LTTE positions strung up as a crescent along the western edge of the lagoon starting from Puthukkudiyiruppu in the north to Tanniyuttu on the Mankulam-Mullathivu A34 road.

The security forces’ battle plans are built on three broad fronts. 55 Division coming from Jaffna along the northwest has blocked the escape routes through Chundikulam, a key Sea Tiger base. From the same direction, 58 Division is advancing along the A35 road fighting a series of delaying positions. From the west, 57 Division is playing a containing role with the LTTE cadres boxed in the jungles between Iranamadu tank and Mullathivu. The main offensive is being built up from the south with three task forces — which are formations smaller than divisions — and 59 Division. The task forces are combing the jungles while 59 Division is poised for the assault.

With such a large force confronting them, the LTTE cadres defending Mullathivu are facing a situation that is not dissimilar to what they faced during their defence of Kilinochchi, which crumbled after the government forces broke through the perimeter defences. Mullathivu might face the same fate with the final assault going through as a walk-in into a ghost town.

Humanitarian agencies have warned of an impending human tragedy with about 3.5 lakh civilians trapped in the battle zone, and the LTTE is being accused of using them as a cover. However, civilians have started flowing into the area controlled by the security forces in their hundreds, indicating that the LTTE is no more able to exercise tight control over them.

Thus, what is possibly Prabakaran’s last battle is likely to leave him in a position similar to what he was in 1987 — mauled badly and trying to cut his losses and live to fight another day. And, as earlier, the security forces are at his heels to catch or kill him, although the army commander, Lt. General Sarath Fonseka, says the Tiger chief might have fled the island for a safer refuge. After losing the precious lives 24,000 of his followers in nearly three decades of war, Prabakaran is still where he was to pursue his dream of a Tamil Eelam.

Another 2 names sunk into my memory are,
1. Corpral Chaminda Yakandawala - Who saved Army Commander
2. Lieutenant Commander Lalith Prasanna Edirisinghe - who saved 700+ lives

I know that I am not doing justice just mentioning few.

Spartan Brigade Thunder Run, Baghdad, Iraq

Action Video: TF 1-66 Armor Thunder Run

Excerpt From:
Thunder Run: The Armored Strike to Capture Baghdad
By David Zucchino,ISBN-10: 0871139111

Initial American plans called for heavy mechanized divisions like the 3rd Infantry to capture the outskirts of Baghdad and seal off the city while light infantry (the 82nd and 101st Airborne) cleared the city block by block. There were actually two thunder runs. The initial thunder run - a rapid dash through hostile territory - on April 5 was meant to be a recon by fire, and the plans called for the Spartan Brigade to fight its way into the city and out again. Enemy fire along the route was withering, if disorganized, but the Brigade suffered few casualties while killing an estimated 1000 enemy fighters and destroying entire networks of roadside bunkers. The Division's commanders also believed that they had disproved Army doctrine that tanks were not effective in urban terrain. The success of the first thunder run spawned a second one two days later.

For their second thunder run on April 7, the Brigade intended to penetrate to the city center and occupy key government buildings before pulling out. It was another recon by fire, but Spartan Brigade Commander Col. David Perkins hoped to convince his superiors to let him stay once he was in place. Perkins was convinced that once he had seized the city center that Saddam's regime would collapse from inside out. The operation jumped off just before 6:00 a.m., and just after 8:00 a.m., the lead company rolled into Saddam's Republican Palace in downtown Baghdad. The fiercest fighting was out along Highway 8 which had to be kept open for resupply. Those fights raged all day as seemingly suicidal Republican Guards, Fedayeen, and Syrian mercenaries hurled themselves against the Americans. Late in the day, Col. Perkins' appeal to remain in the city was approved, and within days, Baghdad had been liberated. The Spartan Brigade's thunder run had broken the back of the Iraqi resistance. To Americans watching back home on TV, it looked deceptively easy. But, as Zucchino relates in searing detail, the fighting - especially to secure the key interchanges along Highway 8 - was vicious and deadly and turned on the skill and heroism of American soldiers.

Shortly thereafter, the second act of the Iraqi War - nation building - began, and it has proved more frustrating and intractable than most expected. That, however, should not detract from what American troops accomplished in act one. In a way, the entire campaign was a thunder run - unprecedented in its swiftness and lethality. The Third Infantry is on its way back to Iraq as I write. There won't be any thunder runs this time and probably no books about their exploits, but their mission is no less important. I wish them God's speed.

lalith is exaggerating. according to pro-LTTE sources over 20 civilians have died in the past 2 days. this may be the highest for 2 days in the war. but it is based on LTTE info.

killed and injured list.

70% of them are within 15 - 64. looks genuine as the actual % comes close to it (although the actual average is a bit lower than 70%). that means a few tiger dead/injured are also in the list.

bloody tamil tigers are using human shields. CURSE THEM and CURSE the sakkiliyas who support them.

One main beleif of LTTPErs is a the "Counter Attack" and "Wait and See".

First they are nothing new to us. We had this game in 25 years and mastered it?

Second, think who will become the next coomanders and senior commanders in SLA? They all will be battle hardend guyz from this war. They know every inch of the terriotory and the tactics?

Third, who will left for LTTE? Where and when they will get trained (remember we are in 2009 not 80's)?

Finally whom in North want another 25 years to live in misery to get the same result?

It is wanted by Dispora toget extent theri refugee Visas and satisfy guilty concious (of letting killing so many youth while theier kids having fun in Europe).
