The Army will shortly declare the liberation of Elephant Pass, a garrison lost years ago. It will be a historic victory in this sector and the 53 and 55 have been given the opportunity to raise the lion flag and their share of the victory.
Clearing operations are being finalized at EPS. A Major was killed by a boobytrap but other than that, no serious incidents have occurred since the capture of Soranpattu. The 58 and 53 will not meet up. The former started moving east of Paranthan via Murusamoddai towards Chalai/Mulaitivu.

I tend to agree with AGG. We should not grab their traditional agriculture lands and force them out. In Wanni and elsewhere, there are plenty of fertile lands for Sinhalese and Muslims to do their farming, industry and business in north and east.
What they need is protection, guidance, resources and development from the GOSL. The best answer is proper ethnic blending throughout the island. I am sure Tamil politicians will object because they are going to loose their power with diluting ethnic densities but it has to be done.
For those who have been debating about "Buddhism", some thoughts:
There is no such thing as Buddhism. Just Dhamma. It is there as the absolute truth. We are only now (after 2500 years) beginning to converge towards the mathematical model of this truth.
Buddha (the enlightened one) merely discovered what was there. (An waht 'merely it was!).
Those who are "Buddhists" can be considered to be in a river attempting to cross to the other side (enlightenment). Once you have crossed you are no longer a Buddhist.
The non-Buddhists are on either bank.
Yes , it is true that "Buddha Dhamma" has been protected on the island of Sri Lanka. The protectors have always been non-Buddhist. To protect you have to necessarily assume a non-Buddhist stance. The protectors are called by another name. Arakshaka. If you like you can call the "Raksha" (heh heh).
An aside about Kamma and the present conflict. Given that existence just is (an insight which was fisrt explained by Gautama) and time is an illusion, it can be considered a pattern. A cahotic pattern to be precise. As is the way with cahotic patterns, everything is inter-dpendant. So, you cannot have people amassing wealth and power or taking up terror tactics without soemthing elase which balances that pattern.
What we see in the form of the "Rakshas" who have beaten the crap out of the 80 year old separatist ideology based on money, power and terror, is exactly that. Kamma has caught up but given that time has no meaning , it is all just part of the pattern.

The world at large is now suddenly discovering a whole new concept, long obvious as common sense to us Patriots of Sri Lanka, that a military solution, to extend the writ of the elected government of the nation over its entire territory, is a necessary pre-condition for peace and security, and implementation of any "political solutions."
In the article below an Indian author recommends the same prescription of bitter medicine for the multitude of separatist ills afflicting India today.
It was not too long ago that the bleeding heart apologists in our own country, were advocating "peaceful negotiation" and "devolution of power" to hand over a lions share of the land of our country to a separatist group, swallowing whole their pretext of intolerable discrimination for carving out a monoethnic separate state.
They, aided and abetted by India and other foreign countries who had nothing at stake to lose, where prepared "to solve the problem peacefully" at the expense of the inalienable right of the Sri Lankan people to secure and prosperous future in their undivided motherland.
Now that Sri Lanka is demonstrating to the whole world how a small but courageous democracy can defeat separatist terrorist groups, while protecting and liberating a segment of its enslaved people, a murmur of approval is emerging worldwide, that will soon swell into a thunderous roar of applause!
We, Sri Lankans, must continue to do what our hearts and minds tell us is both fitting and proper, disregarding our own nay-sayers and foreign elements who have nothing of their own at stake.
We have to keep in mind that both the former nay-sayers within our own country, and our external new friends whose oxen are now being gored in their own backyards, are intrinsically unreliable; self reliance must be our goal and watchword. Eternal vigilance and self-sacrifice is the price of freedom.
Success has great many fathers; failure is always an orphan.
[Lanka-LTTE war a lesson in use of force

AT A time when India is struggling to find the right policy mix to deal with Pakistan-sponsored terrorism, two other terrorism-related struggles are drawing global attention. The more high-profile one is the Israeli counter offensive against Hamas but another equally significant development is the gradual rout of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) by the Sri Lankan armed forces. The Sri Lankan military is hoping that 2009 would be the year that would finally witness the demise of the LTTE. The Tamil Tigers, on the other hand, are keen to put to rest any doubts about their impending collapse. And so, after a long silence, they finally made a statement that despite recent setbacks they would bounce back.
What is happening in Sri Lanka today will have some far-reaching consequences not only for Sri Lanka but also for the entire region. Though Tamil separatism as a political ideology remains rather potent, the LTTE as a military force was gradually withering away over the last few years. The LTTE have been fighting since 1982 to create an independent state for Sri Lanka’s minority Tamils after decades of marginalisation by governments dominated by the ethnic Sinhalese majority. It have been estimated that more than 70,000 people have been killed in the war. For the first time in years, the Sri Lankan military offensive has virtually seized all major strongholds, marginalising the Tigers to an extent that even their supporters are wondering about their ability to hold on for another year.
The strategic failure of the LTTE lies in its not being able to read the big picture accurately. Rather than keeping India on their side or, at least, neutral, the Tigers antagonised the Indian public by assassinating Rajiv Gandhi. The result was that apart from a small fringe of political sympathisers in Tamil Nadu, there has been very little political support for the LTTE in India. Moreover, it was declared a terrorist organisation by more than 30 states and in a political environment shaped by September 11, 2001, there was little strategic space left for the Tigers to manoeuvre.
So when the Mahinda Rajapakse regime in Colombo decided that the time for a steady military offensive had come, the LTTE was left bereft of any outside support base.
About a year ago, the Sri Lankan government formally decided to annul a 2002 ceasefire and since then, over the last several months, the military has advanced steadily into rebel-held territory, first sweeping the rebels away from the northwestern coast and then pushing them farther into the northeast.
It has been rightly pointed out that a purely military approach will not resolve the problem of Tamil separatism. But the military option is integral to dealing with the problem of violent extremism and terrorism, something that the LTTE exemplified long before Islamist extremism came to the fore. It is nonsensical to suggest that terrorism cannot be defeated by military force. It can be defeated by effective use of military power but if the absence of terrorism and extremism is to be guaranteed on a sustained basis, a comprehensive approach, that includes effective economic, political and social changes, is needed. But such changes can only be brought about once a limited measure of security has been achieved. And for this it is important to defeat terrorists and insurgents militarily. This was how the US policy of surge in Iraq achieved the desired results and one hopes that the Sri Lankan government would follow up its military victory with suitable socio-economic and political changes that can address the genuine aspirations of the Tamils in Sri Lanka.
While the Sri Lankan government says that whatever be the solution Sri Lanka can’t be divided, the LTTE’s aim is to carve out a Tamil homeland.
India has always maintained that the conflict of Sri Lanka has to be resolved within the territorial integrity of Sri Lanka and there has been no change in this position.
Sri Lanka’s success in routing the LTTE certainly has much to do with India’s hands-off approach but such an approach has also created a security vacuum which has been filled by China.
China’s defence engagement with Sri Lanka has increased substantially over the last several years even as India has continued to be reticent about its engagements with Colombo because of domestic political compulsions. China has been asserting itself in India’s backyard and all the regional states have very effectively played off China and India vis-à-vis each other. Sri Lanka has been no exception and, in its war against the LTTE, its relationship with China has allowed it to prosecute its war without paying any heed to complaints about the manner in which it is being prosecuted.
Sri Lanka’s success in neutralising the LTTE should not only be welcomed by India but it should also be emulated in certain respects. It is very important for a state to demonstrate its credibility by establishing its monopoly on the use of force. The fact that the LTTE could run a parallel government was hurting the credibility of the Sri Lankan state and by demolishing that capability of the LTTE, the Sri Lankan state has sent a strong message that it remains the final arbiter as far as the legitimate use of force within its territorial bounds is concerned. The capture of the de facto capital of the LTTE, Kilinochchi, is therefore of great symbolic value even though it’s not a great strategic asset.
A similar, and in many ways a much more severe, problem confronts India where the Indian state’s monopoly on the use of force is today being questioned by various entities and the Indian state has shown a remarkable reluctance to impose its will on such groups.
The Indian elite should recognise that India is a regional hegemon because of its size and capabilities. It will be resented because of this no matter what, by its neighbouring states to various degree. But it is for India to first establish its will within its own territory and then play the role of a security provider in the region before thinking of a global role for itself.
India should now insist that the Lankans push through a political devolution package for the Tamils, which India sees as essential if any long-term reconciliation is to be achieved. The Tamil separatist movement’s end has been forecast on many occasions since its inception in the 1970s but the LTTE has proven adept at adapting itself to changing strategic milieu previously. Yet what is clear is that the LTTE is at its lowest ebb today, and if the Sri Lankan government can play its cards right, this might be the beginning of a new era for Sri Lanka and the region.

Buddhism is the philosophical explanation of the “Dhamma”. If you take “Abhidhamma” for an example, it is the scientific version of “Dhamma”. Similarly “Vinaya Pitakaya” and “Suthra Pitakaya” are the discipline code and “Dhamma sermons” respectively as delivered by Lord Buddha.
When I read “Dhamma Pada”, I see the philosophical explanations clearly.
However, real meaning of “Dhamma” cannot be understand by reading or listening because no language is good or versatile enough to deliver the ultimate truth in its purest form.
Lord Buddha realised the ultimate truth by his intuition similar to a feeling like sadness or joyfulness. When you are sad you cannot pass how you feel to another person exactly because of the short comings in the language.
You will see expert authors like Gogol, Maxim Gorky, Pushkin, or Destowosky tried their best to describe human emotions and they did a good job too. However they are all different from each other when they wrote it down.
That is why Buddhists were trained to follow “Jathaka” stories and “BODU SITHUWAM” instead of “suthra”. One picture or a story can deliver the real meaning of a single “Dhamma” verse many times better than a scripture or a sermon.
That is why meditation is promoted in Buddhist culture more than other practices.

In his campaign against Cholas, the odds against the king had been overwhelming until he established a secure base in Rohana. Early attempts at dislodging Cholas by organizing raids from Rohana failed because of the divisions among aspirants to the Sinhalese throne. Cholas were even able to occasionally recruit support for themselves from among local notables in Rohana.
All of today's architects of victory against terrorists are from Rohana. I say this with pride as a Sri Lankan patriot even though I hail from Senkadaglapura. The fat bastard has been able to recruit support from modern day traitors Ranil et al. The parallels are uncanny.

I am driven to make some comments here...against my better judgment.

This is semantics; Buddhism is the entire body of knowledge and teachings imparted to his disciples by the Buddha, the teacher. It consists of the essence of Buddhism (The Four Noble TRuths, the Nobele Eight fold Path etc), and the various Jathaka stories that serve as examples that illustrate and clarify some aspect of his teachings.
A Buddhist is one who accepts the Buddha teachings. Only that person can claim to be a Buddhist, no one is empowered to either induct him into the religion, or expel him from it. In this sense, Buddhism is very different from Roman Catholicism, in which is baptised into the church and excommunicated from the flock for severe transgressions. Whether he is a "good Buddhist", together with his merits and sins through Sansara, will determine whether he attains the blessed state of Nirvana.

He did discover and reveal what was hidden behind the veil of ignorance. But he did more than that; he showed us the way to overcome it and attain nirvana. I think he also left open the possibility of other paths to enlightenment when he asked Buddhists to honor other great prophets and religios teachings; he never claimed exclusivity.
As a scientist/engineer, what is so appealing to me about Buddhism is that if you accept his very few basic premises, everything else follows as a logical consequence of those axioms. Just as all non-relativistic motions, no matter how complex, can be derived from Netwon's laws of Motion.
I must also say that the fundamental axioms of Buddhism must still be accepted on faith, just as Christians accept on faith the existence of God and that love of God will yield salvation. Faith in the validity of the axioms underlying the Buddha's teachings are supported by the observation that the logical results deduced from those axioms explain the human condition very well. In that sense, it is like a scientific experiment relating cause to effect. It is in this sense, that Albert Einstein said that, of all religions, Buddhism is the most modern and compatible with modern science.

As I said before, a person who claims to follow the Buddha's teachings is a Buddhist. Whether he reaches the opposite bank depends only on his own efforts and how good a person he has been through Sansara, irrespective of whether he has claimed to be a Buddhist or not. Once he gets there, he cares not what the past has been.

This is what I find is the most interesting aspect of your comments; and the one that has the most relevance to preserving Sri Lanka.
Soldiers have to do many violent sinful things in war that, according to Buddhism, essentially extends their journey through Sansara. Consequently, ideal Buddhist societies cannot survive in a real physical world populated by real people. This attitude is deeply ingrained in the mind of Buddhists, and may explain why it has largely disappeared in India, and why it took 30 years for the Sinhala Buddhists to come together to fight this war. One of my sisters is a "quintessential" upasakaya and is preparing to attain Nirvana in this life itself. She is lucky that there are other Sinhala Buddhists, like TheraPuttabhaya of old, who are willing to set aside his robe, to go to war and accumulate more sins, so she can stay at home safely and isolate herself from all violence. It is very unlikely that her home, or her Budu-Pilimaya would remain intact, or her loving husband and her children, who enables her to attain enlightenment, would remain alive.
I learned a poem entitled "Abou-ben_Adhem," I think of Moslem inspiration, conveying the message that love and compassion for fellow man, themselves God's children, is valued more by God than love of himself. If that were so, it would seem that fighting to save the lives of one's own family and people out of love and compassion for them, would be more meritorious than allowing their demise out of an unwillingness to kill their enemies.
I think that notion of self-sacrifice on behalf of one's own people, out of deep love and compassion for them, and recognition of the truth about the current conflict as they see it, exemplified by TheraPutthabaya and the Buddhist monks who accompanied our great hero Duttagamani two millienia ago, is embedded deep within the minds of our soldiers motivating them to take up arms in this war.
Perhaps the other fellow-upsakayas at this blog would care to comment on the position of Buddhism on this issue, taking into account we live in a real world, and we are not all Arahats.

please do not bring in Rana's daughters into discussion as that can cause him hurt, the hurt only a father would know when his daughters are insulted. A few days back I got an email from a patriot (a bit of an "outspoken" one like you and me! lol) asking that I listen to the url and I did so and was moved by the beautiful voice, belonging to one of Rana's daughters, singing that Amaradeva's Sinhela song (which brought back many memories to me too)...the point is Rana volunteered that info in this public forum as a proud father and true to his claim, it was a beautiful rendition of a Sinhela classic jointly done by his daughters and that is something I think we must disassociate from any differences we have with him in this blog.

LTTE bodies in Northern hospitals

COLOMBO: International Committee of Red Cross (ICRC) in Sri Lanka said Monday they were unable to hand over the bodies of LTTE cadres killed during the battles in Northern Sri Lanka as LTTE officials had not come forward to accept them.
According to Spokesperson for the ICRC in Sri Lanka Sarasi Wijeratna there are no LTTE offices in Kilinochchi or Mullaitivu to hand over the bodies. ICRC said that the LTTE was not present to take away the bodies during the past few days.
At the moment there are 36 LTTE bodies lying at the Vavuniya hospital, she added. Hospital sources confirmed that security forces handed over another 13 LTTE bodies to the hospital by this afternoon.
The hospital authorities are preparing to seek the court assistance to bury the bodies with government funds.
Authorities buried 24 bodies of LTTE cadres that were in the Anuradhapura hospital mortuary Sunday since the LTTE upon receiving permission from the courts.

the best example of this situation is vp.a powerful nation involved in sri lankan affairs has already offered vp guarantees of safe passage out of sri lanka if he so wishes.he will have to move out with a few other conditions and in exchange he will have safe passage and will have to live in exile.he will not be harmed but will never be able to move out from the place he will be moved to and can live as a comparative free man without much issues.vp has done immense damage to this country concerned which has offered him this position.so if this to leak out the nation concerned will have to deal with immense internal pressure stemming out of public opinion.so these are diplomatic deals made never to be revealed.in such a move the country feels that it can deal with the sentiments in the south effectively with them having a sense of being not defeated fully and at the same time winning its objective of finishing the war of sri lanka.the power concerned must be calculating that preserving vp is much beneficial to deal with the consequences of finishing the sri lankan war with the military might than to have him dead,especially dealing with local political and emotional unrest.
some sections of sri lanka too feels the same.on one hand the last battle will be won without much damages and with the exit of the boss and the remaining cadres too will crumble like rubble with demoralization and a loss of h9ope.less bleeding and the objectives will be realized.but then how will the public of sri lanka react to this...?
the likes of JVP will make a huge cry and try to gain political mileage out of this.while we would be saving the lives of thousands of soldiers and winning the war with politico diplomatic strategy,still there will be people who would like to condition the people into thinking should the 'facts of the deal' leak out,that its been a betrayal etc....for them it would be an opportunity not to be missed to gain loss political ground stirring up the emotions of the layman....
getting back to our main story the guy who surrendered did so with an understanding of corporation and in exchange will escape trial he was in touch with local and international powerful agencies for safety upon surrendering.he will be dealt with in terms of the premeditate arrangement for the vast ocean and plethora of vital information,a treasure trove he made available to the govt of sri lanka and her armed forces fighting the last battle to rid the country battered by 30 years of terror....

This kind of a scenario will be useful, only if MOD wants to have fake certificate instead of obtaining a authentic certification from a provider like Verisign. This scenario is not applicable to a respected government sponsored site cos they simply would get a real security certificate.

LTTE bodies lay at hospitals in Northern Sri Lanka
Jan 12, Colombo: International Committee of Red Cross (ICRC) in Sri Lanka says that they are unable to hand over the bodies of LTTE cadres killed during the battles in Northern Sri Lanka as LTTE officials had not come forward to accept them.
According to Spokesperson for the ICRC in Sri Lanka Sarasi Wijeratna there are no LTTE offices in Kilinochchi or Mullaitivu to hand over the bodies. ICRC said that the LTTE was not present to take away the bodies during the past few days.
At the moment there are 36 LTTE bodies lying at the Vavuniya hospital, she added. The hospital sources confirmed that security forces handed over another 13 LTTE bodies to the hospital by this afternoon.
The hospital authorities are preparing to seek the court assistance to bury the bodies with government funds.
Authorities buried 24 bodies of LTTE cadres that were in the Anuradhapura hospital mortuary yesterday since the LTTE upon receiving permission from the courts.

someone can use packet sniffer, but they must have the same broadcast address as server - or connected to same switch (no firewalling etc).

• Karuna says minor cadres already deserting terrorist outfit
With the security forces closing in on the uncleared areas in the North, TMVP leader Vinayagamurthy Muralitharan alias Karuna Amman yesterday said there would be a possibility of secondary level LTTE leaders leaving the organization and surrendering to the military in the future.
However, he ruled out the possibility of those in the LTTE hierarchy such as Susai, Bhanu and P. Nadesan doing so.
Mr. Muralitharan, the one time LTTE commander for the Eastern Province, told the Daily Mirror that the minor cadres had already started leaving the organization by throwing away their weapons.
“The fall of Mullaitivu is now imminent. After its fall, the LTTE will be holed up in their jungle pockets. Now, they have a territory which is only 40 square kilometres in extent. All heavy weapons and other war infrastructures are installed in it now,” he said.
Asked whether it would be the beginning of a long-drawn guerrilla war that existed during the time of the Indian Peace Keeping Forces (IPKF), he said that it would be impossible today.
“At that time, people supported the LTTE. It mingled with people and carried out attacks. Today, the people have rejected them. At the same time, the military is using modern warfare. It will be impossible for them to hold on to their pockets under such circumstances. The army will smoke them out easily,” he said.
He said the war would end soon, but ruled out the possibility of setting any deadline for it at this hour.

unlike you I've actually lived in SL most of my life so I didnt have to read history, I've lived through it.
On those previous occasions that you mention they have lost some places and managed to recapture them but they've never lost all of those towns at the same time. and SLA didnt have defence in depth which made recapture a possibility. Anyway if you dont understand I give up trying to explain.
