Why the Special Forces so deadly

A Sri Lanka Army Special Forces team that posed with President Mahinda Rajapakse in Vakarai many months ago, demonstrates why the SLA Special Forces are a force to be reckoned with. Hardly ever known to advertise its capacity, the unit shows-off for the first time what deadly power they carry into the battle field.

For example, the Officer in the picture below is carrying what appears to be a Heckler and Koch MP5SD Sub Machine Gun (SMG). This gun, which is one of the world's most accurate SMGs is popular among many SF units throughout the world. It is 'Sound Dampened' and only emits a sound similar to a stapler (see video)
H&K MP5SD
But, by far the most dangerous weapon the team is carrying is a Multiple Grenade Launcher. The South African Milkor MGL is a force multiplier on its own. It can destroy anything from infantry to vehicles.
Milkor MGL in the hands of the SF
The weapon is a product of Milkor/Ripple Effect company and uses 40mm grenades with High Explosive (HE) Fragmentation Warheads with close to 400m range. It has an infra-red (IR) enabled Trijicon Armson Occluded Eye Gunsight (OEG) enabling night fighting. The MGL can fire 6 40mm rounds in under 20 seconds.

Milkor (SA) MGL
The latest generation of this weapon includes the M-32 MGL (MGL-140) and the XRGL40 extended range MGL manufactured by Milkor USA with up to 800m range thanks also to a longer barrel. Capable of firing HE rounds, the MGL can use a new type of grenade called the 'Hell Hound' (see video). It also uses an ingenious method known as HUNTIR or a High Altitude Unit Navigated Tactical Imaging Round affectionately known as the 'footsoldiers' UAV' (M-32 video 2)

One of the soldiers in the team (pictured below) is carrying a PKM Light Machine Gun (LMG). An educated guess would be that the LMG is Chinese (NORINCO- China North Industries Corp). It however is also similar to the Kalashnikov PK-LMG.
A Russian (Kalashnikov) PK-LMG
This Special Forces soldier is wearing an ALICE Pack (All-purpose Lightweight Individual Carrying Equipment). He and the rest of the team are wearing uniforms with a patchwork of Advantage Camo used in hunting. The brown hunting camo in the green background would fit well in the green and earth coloured terrain these men fight in.

Needless to say that it is not only the equipment they carry, it is the training, intelligence, dedication, courage, and bravery of men who carry these weapons to the battle field make these weapons so deadly. These guys are nothing less than legendry.

DW,
Why not do an article on LTTE's 'Special Forces'?
I understand info is hard to come by but still some bits and pieces are out there. If the present Yala area conflict is an indicator then they also must be good on the physical aspect at least--excellent evasion skills, anti-tracking skills, camouflage, tolerance of extreme privation for extended periods, consumption of non-traditional 'foods', peak physical health, good morale etc.

What about the physical aspect os SF? any declassified operrations info?

Great info defensewire. Great pictures, explanations and info. One thing you forgot to mention that makes our special forces so deadly is the amount of dedication through discipline, that they put out everytime they step into action!!! God Bless Them!

GO SL Special Forces!! SLSF!

Unknown said...

Why mention about LTTE phoney forces, all they do is HIDE, BRIBE, ATTACK, and RUN. They are bunch of animals. LTTE are nothing but animals! Nothing special for animals that are used to living in the jungle, compared to human beings who have trained, fought, and learned to live and FIGHT without hiding and running.

so sun tzu disciple, if you really wana learn more about ltte, then visit your local zoo library or go visit the zoo. Lions that live in jungles have better tactics then LTTE does. Its not a rocket scientist to know that it is very difficult to find peole in the jungle if they are hiding, ONLY and ONLY because our country is not rich enough to spend enough resources. Otherwise, these ltte dogs will be caught like cockroaches.

Oh yeh, Defencewire, Please write an article about LTTE Special Forces. Those fucks at Yala blew a claymore mine aiming a bus carrying civilians near Yala. Then they shot the ones who survived the blast (targeting civilians was intentional. shooting proves that). What a bunch of heroes.

Wow! a picture says a thousand words!

Impressive DW the amount of info. you excavated from a single seemingly useless (because of the politician!!)photo.

Keep up the good work.

May God bless all Sri Lankan forces, protect them and bring them back to the safety and comfort of their loved ones-amen.

std,

Is there any reason why we should learn about LTTE's 'Special Forces who attack civilians after hiding in jungles? What is so special with stealing food from civilians, killing civilians and blowing passenger buses? Anyway, either at DW or DN, we had some information about LTTE weapons used in the AAB attack.

The current title "Why the Special Forces so deadly" is grammatically incorrect,
The title should be "Why the Special Forces are so deadly". Anyways I call a spade a spade and I should admit the article is a very interesting read.

As I had predicted earlier the end of free and fair elections is now a reality. http://www.dailymirror.lk/DM_BLOG/Sections/frmNewsDetailView.aspx?ARTID=8243

Upul said..... As I had predicted earlier the end of free and fair elections is now a reality.

Upul,
Your generalization applies to other countries too. In the year 2000, President Bush won the presidency of the US by supposedly beating his opponent by little over 500 votes in the State of Florida. Before the election, President Bush's brother, Jeb Bush, who was Governor of that State hired a private company to fix the voter rolls (in the State of Florida a felony conviction disqualifies a person from voting). As a result, over 57,000 people were incorrectly dropped from the voter rolls. When President Bush's opponent asked for a recount, the Supreme Court of the US stopped the recount after 43 days effectively handing over the presidency to Bush. The point I’d like to make is that not all countries are perfect in this regard, including Sri Lanka. SL is probably the only country in the world that has lost a President, two leaders of the opposition, numerous ministers and and parlimentarians in the electoral process due to LTTE suicide bombers. Yet despite the serious security threat posed by the LTTE to candidates and voters, it is remarkable that SL is still able to hold an election in the east.

You mean the ones in the Yala area Claymore bombing civilian buses? "Special Forces" generally never deliberately kill civilians buddy. What you see in Yala are a bunch of cowards killing defenseless women and children.

Pl grow up kids. I am asking DW to deal with LTTE special forces to find out what makes them tick. I did not attempt to judge the morality of Ltte or SF here, just the military aspect. It is necessary for you to dissect and discuss threadbare the strengths(and weaknesses) or your enemies if you wish to defeat him. You guys are a disgrace to a defence forum with your repeated pseudo-patriotic pseudomilitary crap.
I presume we should discuss mostly military aspects here than indulging in cheap jingoism and my-gun-is bigger-than-yours type of theatricalism.

Dear DefenceWire
I thought that the South African government refuses to sell us weapons. So the launcher would have been purchased through a third party?
The LTTE has an impressive presence in South Africa. They have managed to convince the ethnic Indian population in Durban and elsewhere that the LTTE cause in Sri Lanka is similar to the one fought against apartheid by the ANC. I remember speaking to a restaurant owner who was convinced this was the case. The SL High Commission on the other hand does just about nothing…

I remember being in very rural South Africa a few years ago and encountering a small sign at a farm. The sign said LTE and the depicted a tiger peaking through a hole with two rifles crossed.

You asked how one rates the group currently in Yala, and I gave my opinion. Frankly apart from killing innocent civilians, I haven't seen any "special forces" attributes in this group. I am not saying special forces do not exist in LTTE. However since Col. Karuna Amman left we haven't seen anything spectacular from their special forces other than AAB attack.

One note, see how our lads have really taken to fieldcraft! they have got non standard DPUs. Its a normal Olive Green pants & Parka with "RealTree" strips sewn on to it, i bet they made it them selves. This is where training, tactics and experience come into play.

When I asked some lads in our specop’s units what they would like to have most, they didn’t ask for a lot of new weapons, they wanted light weight Secure Communications sets with head sets, NVG’s and handheld thermal imaging binos & weapon scopes, reliable batteries.

“ethuru tika api balagannam” one said with a cunning grin!

( Polymer Magazines were also asked for a lot & mine-resistant boots were also asked for)

Guys,

It is to SLDFs advantage if an analysis can be done comparing SL SF an LTTE SF.

We cannot continue live in a fools' paradise. We must identify their STRENGTHS AND WEAKNESSES THAN OUR STRENGTHS.

If we just praise WHAT WE LIKE TO HEAR AND DISPERSE WHAT WE DON'T LIKE TO HEAR, we are, to say to least, defeating the purpose of these websites.

Please have an open mind and don't jump to conclusions.

We must intellugently support the govt. plans and SLDF plans; not blindly.

There has to be some inconsistency of using names such as special forces, commandos, brigade and ranks such as col., lt.col. etc for both SLA and LTTE.

Apart from this as STD and some others sugested it is more useful to discuss LTTE strengths and weakneses. Finding SLA strength is not difficult as many things going through procedures, gazzette, cainet papers etc. But LTTE details are hidden and subject to grate deal of mis-information.

NOLTTE=Peace said...

As nemesis said, our special forces lack lack many of the basic stuff. Night thermal vision, wearable personal communicators, special boots that protect legs from APMs, few of the needy weapons that can not be listed here.

I would like them to be attached with sniper teams too, as currently snipers are not part of the core SF teams.

Our LMG, SMG concentration is also very low compared to other SF teams who are in war areas.

GPS equipment is highly short-supply. What we have also are text based and not the graphics based type (it is another story that we do not have electronic maps either).

Ours could be the world's best battle-hardened SF team.

I have seen, videos of US SF teams getting beaten in Afganistan and Iraq, and how much they panic and go disarray when they were attacked.

As I heard, our guys are like rocks who keep focus no matter what.. They deliver!

You are a pride of the whole nation - we salute you for the job you do with all the less resources!

Still on the subject, can you please tell me what kind of machine guns are called 'Heavy Machine Guns'?
Is a AA gun a HMG?
Thanks!

Btw DW, if you are not so busy, can you please clarify whether those guys are SF or Commando?
Thanks!

Unknown said...

Puffy
Someone correct me if i'm wrong but HMG's are normally used with tripods and are not as portable as the other variants...
And yes most AA guns are indeed HMG's and so are the ones that are mounted on navy ships and boats...
So i think a rough way to say it would be LMG's and assault rifles are mostly for mobile ops where the HMG's almost always have to be either mounted onto a vehicle of sorts or used with a tripod...
You can use HMG in mobile ops as long as you can carry the bloody thing around and use a tripod

The most popular HMG must be the good ol 50cal :)

Puffy said...

Ranil,
Thanks for the info. mate!
If you were wondering, all this time I thought that those big guns (with bi pods) carried by our forces were refered to as HMGs.

there are HMG's that are developed with light weight materials and with less recoil etc...
DW can clarify but don't think our guys use anything more than LMG's in mobile ops...

We would love to do an article on LTTE SF unit. Only thing is a lack of credible info. The other issue is, SLA normal infantry is killing them in Weli Oya as we speak. Earlier, they sent Charles Anthony and Imran Pandian to Mannar and Vavuniya. Now they have sent Ratha Regiment and members of the two other units to Weli Oya as well. In the fighting so far, regular infantry has killed over 200 of them last month. this makes us wonder how really special they are. Now this is our opinion and maybe a moot point. The only unit that has dealt a severe blow to the Security Forces (in this case SLAF) were the Black Tigers that attacked A'pura.

Defencewire said...

HMGs have tripods to hold the gun upright and to steady the gun during recoil. HMGs require two men, one to carry the barrel another to carry tripod and munitions. In Mannar, Vavuniya and Weli Oya, mini camps established inside LTTE areas have HMGs stationed for firepower in case of LTTE attempts to overrun them. We generally use for mobile attacks the GMPM (General Purpose Machine Gun) instead with 7.62 caliber.

"excellent evasion skills, anti-tracking skills, camouflage, tolerance of extreme privation for extended periods, consumption of non-traditional 'foods', peak physical health, good morale etc.[unquote]"

Now that you actually asked something I will give how I felt they have those skills:
1. Excellent Evasion Skills:
a.The ltte were cleared from east by july 2007.At least since then this team in Yala camped in this Sinhala majority area without being noticed--in an area new to them with a hostile population.
b.When they blew their cover in oct15 2007 the GoSL was truly surprised, so complete was their cover.
c.Since then they have attacked civilians and military multiple times, and are not detected before or after each attack by the thousands of army, home guard and police pumped into the area. Mind you this is an overwhelming Singala area.

2.Anti-tracking skills:
Since coming to notice in oct15, thousands of military(one report said 8000army, not counting homeguard/police/armed civilians)are on their trail using latest equipment/tracker dogs etc .But except 2-3 incidents these fellows never tracked down or made contact--so they must have good anti-tracking skills.

3.Camouflage: without camouflage skills nobody can perfrom no.1 &2 in a hostile area.
4.tolerance of extreme privation for extended periods:
To be on the run in a hostile area for 5months continuosly with thousands of soldiers searching to kill you would require tolerance to extreme privation--like not bathing for days, eating stale or raw food, not able to defecate or urinate except in streams for fear of detection ,keeping immobile in rain or shine, etc

5.consumption of non-traditional 'foods' : will be required for a team on the run in a hostile area needing to keep out of sight for months.Prob includes animals of every description, insects, wild veg etc

6.peak physical health:
Above can be done only by a person in excellent health.

7.good morale : Required for a person under tremendous pressure of being killed or captured for months on end.

These are my opinions. You can contest it .But it is no reason for abusing.Thank you.

I don't support political parties but this president did try to keep the talk going with the ltte even when ltte were blatantly going against CFA... The man tolerated a lot before finally embarking on a military operation...
The present war situ was created by the ltte and not by the president... the president doesn't give orders to kill civilians etc like VP does... In war i'm sure you know civilian casualties do happen... that's the ugly reality of war...
But i think you're really ignorant and stupid to put the president and the ltte leader who has terrorized this country for decades in the same level...

Are you telling me these people are all lying? All these orgs have a reputation of honesty and impartiality--as can be deduced by their scathing reports on ltte too. You dont have to go to Japan to prove Atom Bomb was dropped there, do you?

STD
are you a Norwegian by any chance :) :)

on yala.
I'm not gonna go through each single point of your post but most of your points don't really make that much of sense in yala area...
And let me tell you that i have trekked through yala jungles, not in fancy jeeps but on foot... I've trekked in Buttala, gone into the jungles in motorbikes etc etc so i know the terrain a bit :)

To start off... you exactly don't need goo morale to do what these guys have done... In SL itself we've had robbers, gangsters and Marijuana cultivators etc who have evaded cops, stayed in the jungles for months and even years etc etc...
Even a coward can hide in a jungle, eat worms or whatever and hit a bus with unarmed civilians... I don't think you need huge morale to that.. If you know survival situation like you say you do... people do whatever it takes to survive and that doesn't mean you do it with good morale... it's just survival.... a very basic animal instinct

And when you say ltte was cleared from the east... the fact is that SLDF cleared all major camps and the heavy presence ltte...I'm sure few hundreds of them or so would've mixed in with the civilian population... And ltte did have this area under them for a long time and the sldf operations also took sometime to cut through so they had enough time to do this..

Yala area jungles are settlements are spread apart..some villages don't even have proper roads... there's heavy cover in the area with some streams also running across... you do get boulder formations near water ways and at some spots...jungle and the undergrowth is quite thick...
The terrain is vast and remote enough for a small tiger team hide quite easily and it's a nightmare for a hunting unit to take em out especially with our lack of resources...
Remember that we don't have detailed gps maps and sadly most sldf folks use numeric data based gps units and not the ones with GUI's... It's not easy for a secondary unit to come into assist a first unit that might've made contact with the said tiger team...
And all the time...SLDF team will be walking into a ambush by the ltte squad cos as you very well know...it's so much easier for them to defend than our guys to attack...
we don't have the manpower or the technology to do a complete combing of such a vast area...

Try and get some info about the area... that way you will understand what i'm trying tell you :)
