A 'Context Analysis'

An old battle tank at EP. Source unknown.
The Sri Lanka Army's objective is becoming gradually clear with each day passing. The Army is trying very successfully to reach Kilinochchi, but that is just part of a much bigger plan to bring the entire Jaffna Peninsula and the western flank under its control.

Velupillai Prabhakaran must act before October Monsoons if he wishes to maintain hopes of Tamil Eelam. The Army's target is clearly not just Kilinochchi Town, though it is an important breakthrough along the way, but the more distant goal of capturing Paranthan, Pooneryn and subsequently Elephant pass in that order. This remains to be the main strategy of a grand plan to win the war. In addition, it is now trying to evacuate the last remaining groups of civilians from LTTE areas.

Needless to say this is potentially a very dangerous situation for the LTTE. It could release two more offensive formations and a Mechanized Infantry Division capable of offensive as well as defensive (holding) operations within a matter of weeks from now. It could also guarantee safe passage to the military and drastically improve logistics by linking the north with the south.

The LTTE must strike back before the Monsoon hits. It is imperative. If the Tigers wait till October, the Army would have reached Paranthan. LTTE units stationed at Muhamalai, Nagarkovil and Kilali and also along Nachchikuda to Akkarayan on the western flank would stand very little chance of survival against four of the Army's best Divisions backed by 1, 2 and 3 Special Forces Squadrons, 1, 2 and 3 Commando Regiments and the Air Mobile Brigade.

If this scenario develops into reality, the LTTE would have no real base to operate from, except Mulaitivu north. The Mulaitivu jungles have been systematically conquered by the 59 Division to ensure that a Thoppigala-like situation would not arise in the Wanni where the LTTE gets holed -up inside a dense jungle.

A guerrilla movement like the LTTE cannot afford to lose a base to operate from. It is not withdrawing like a coil to spring back at the SLA at an opportune moment, though it still could. Instead, it is being drawn into skirmishes on a daily basis and being stretched to its limit. It is now digging into its reserves from the Jaffna Front. This is a very dangerous phenomenon.

An organization like the LTTE must maintain a semi conventional military capability at all times to maintain its integrity and identity. This requires the maintenance of a reserve force. The cadres the Tigers are increasingly deploying from Charles Anthony, Imran Pandian, Ratha Regiment etc are exactly that reserve and these units are suffering daily losses.

The LTTE cannot afford to be relegated to the status of an insurgent or terrorist group. It would harm the organizations core value and identity and gravely undermine the organization's funding/support base.

The Army has got its work cut-out. Its must avoid Pyrrhic War by drawing-out the last of the civilians in LTTE clutches. But it can create only the conditions for such a release and wait. After all, the decision is in the hands of the people and the LTTE. The coming week would be crucial. All eyes will be on the two sides until the civilians are released. Once they are released, the International Community wouldn't spare much though to the fate of the LTTE. Its priority would be the civilians. This is why the LTTE holds on to them.

A situation slightly similar to this occurred during Operation Jayasikurui. Military operations stopped and the gains were completely reversed by the LTTE in seven months. They had the civilians with them that time. Is this still a possibility? The best answer to this comes from the silence we now observe in the battlefield and amongst the hard core civilian supporters of the LTTE. Predictions of a large onslaught completely reversing the advance have now stalled. Although it does not mean that all is now lost for the LTTE, it does still mean that the tables have now turned.

The ramifications of an LTTE defeat are colossal. Many powerful state actors would identify with such a victory and even secretly wish for it to happen in this tiny island in the Indian Ocean. It would send a powerful signal to other non-state groups who use violence as means of achieving power and control. Sri Lanka could become the first country in the world to have defeated a guerrilla/terrorist/insurgent group within its own borders in modern history.

This is what LTTE had to say in 1999, when they got Paranthan SLA camp.

"Paranthan army camp, situated strategically on the southern sector of Elephant Pass base complex, has fallen to the LTTE fighters today after intense fighting that lasted more than 24 hours.

Paranthan junction and its surrounding areas are now under the control of the LTTE fighters.

The battle for Paranthan began in the early hours of yesterday when the fighting formations of the Tamil Tigers launched a concerted assault on the garrison town with artillery and mortar fire.

The LTTE fighting units, which quickly overran the front defence lines, engaged the Sri Lankan troops in fierce fighting that lasted several hours.

Unable to withstand the fury of the Tigers' massive onslaught the Sri Lankan troops withdrew from the town in total disarray. Having inflicted heavy casualties on the enemy troops the LTTE fighters recovered vast quantities of arms, ammunition and military vehicles."

Ah, but now the tables have turned, it is a long time since I saw a piece like this from the LTTE.

Yes, getting Paranthan will obviously accelerate the downfall of the LTTE as 53 and 55 Divs. can join the offensive.

Very smart piece of work by DW, for many reasons.

Hi Guys,

Taking Kili, Paranthan, Poonaryn etc etc and surround Mulative is the long road to victory. However, there is a short path that will save fighters from both sides and civilins too. Which is to take leadership of LTTE out. LTTE structure is like a pyramid with top brass, need to know basis. If we can take VP, Pottu and couple of other leaders immediately below, it will disintegrate the outfit. Infighting will come and another Karuna may join with us hoping to become CM in NP.

If we can create that situation, we will save lot of money and people too.

What we need is informers from uncleared areas. There are many displeased parties with LTTE in the area. SLDF should recruit them for ground intelligence with large commissions for accurate info that will lead to destroy LTTE hierachi. If we have accurate info we can use Mig 29 with bunker busters and fuel air rockets to eliminate VP and others. This the short path I recommend.

DA/DW and others who are interested, what do you think?

Moshe Dyan said...

thanks dw for the update.

however the following statements are not true.

"Velupillai Prabhakaran must act before October Monsoons if he wishes to maintain hopes of Tamil Eelam. ........................................................
The LTTE must strike back before the Monsoon hits."

the exact opposite is true.

VP and the LTTE is actually WAITING for october/november to launch their attacks!! N-E monsson and rains will last roughly till april next year and this is the TIME tigers are waiting for.

1. we succeeded in jaffna capture during this time (oct-dec) bcos we were operating from palali to jaffna. there were NO jungle terrain. only a VERY SMALL stretch of untreadable terrain. terrain was not a major obstacle. PLUS during this time there was little (than usual) rain.

2. we lost HEAVILY in the 1999-2000N-E monsoon.

3. tigers are comparatively using MUCH less heavy equipment; they don't give a damn about sick fighters; the terrain advantage (even without rains) is for them in vanni.

4. it is VERY unlikely SLA will venture into the MULAITIVU area (rather the area EAST of A9) during the rainy season. this allows tigers to attack A9 SLA positions from these areas and remain RELATIVELY unpunished.

5. SLA has VERY FEW tactical withdrawal options (without losing too much fighters/equipment) during this time.

Moshe,

Good analysis, Thanks.

Monsoon will heavily affect moving mechanized divisions - I agree, but SLDF could change tactics to suite ground conditions. They must be flexible to change and convert different conditions to their advantage.

However, still I think we should go after the leadership at any cost. That will make things much easier to handle and IC will loose interest on LTTE soon after.

Moshe Dyan said...

rana,

"SLDF could change tactics to suite ground conditions."

of course.

Rana said...

On the same thought.

SLDF should recuite reliable informers from Devananda faction or any other faction who are against VP for a good pay and promis LKR 25m commission for the info that will lead to sucessful elimination of VP. Another LKR 20m for Pottu etc, etc.

I am sure there are people who knows where abouts of top leaders of LTTE within the Wanni. What we will need is only couple of greedy ones to do the job for us. Even LTTE own cardres might do the job!

phaedrus said...

Moshe,

I think what DW means is that by the end of October, the army would have advanced too far for the LTTE to stage an effective counter attack. Army can clean out the north and east of Kilinochchi slowly during the Monsoon season and let the LTTE die of pneumonia in the Mullativu jungles. Just my opinion.

Priceless piece of work by the president. The first time a politician has addressed the UN in Tamil and it has to be the LTTEs worst enemy. They are never going to forget this, even the guys in Thamil Nadu.

Defencewire you may hope for a LTTE attack soon. However as you mentioned the hard core LTTE supporters are silent because they have abandoned both defencenet and defencewire because they know its just goverment propaganda.

I mentioned this once and I will mention this again. Sri Lanka is or will become econonomically bankrupt soon. Even Mc Cain is trying to stop the political campaign because he know his cause is lost. Obama might be favourable to the LTTE and thats whats puts fear in the goverment. The credit crisis and the economic stagnation may cause another round of JVP type insurgency. The LTTE did not have Killi or Elephant Pass yet they came back.

Its sad that the Polticians of this country do not see the need for a political solution in parallel to really help bring peace. You can fool some people some of the time but you cannot fool all people all the time. Paulson and Banadnike are facing the music in the congressional hearings now.

They advocate a no equity approach in the firms they buy bad debt from yet Warren Buffet gets equity. Neither the American People can be that stupid to continue to believe Bush's Doctrine.

Its like Sri Lanka sadly Bush is tying to bank on the war and terror to hide the reason for the true reasons for the economic failures. Its basically Republican Greed. Likewise Mahindha is desperately trying to get the people to forget the economic difficulties and focus their mind on the war.

Navindran said...

It seems strange that the most useless leader of the LTTE was the one several years ago who got the right to raise the LTTE flag in Elephant Pass.

Anyone the most useless leader is Sri Lanka has thus far been spared assasination attempts from the LTTE. As once when CBK cousin Ratawatte aircraft fell in LTTE territory, the joke was that the LTTE let him go because he was so useful in supporting the LTTE's war effort.

"Yesterday rocket attacks were launched on four identified positions at Mankulam based on ground intelligence. The target was indeed Bhanu."

Suprisingly such an attempt was used to kill a useless leader of the LTTE. I guess havng the mix of artillery and armoured unit experience for Bhanu is his handicap. Its rare for infantry officers who have both an arti and armour background. Napolean was an arti man.

He used it to full advantage and then it was also his handicap when he did not understand the realities of infantry warfare.

Moshe Dyan said...

phaedrus,

partly agree with you.

but the above 5 points can have a nastier impact on US than pnumonia (jungle fever, etc.) on tigers.

anyway tigers have ALWAYS been in the mulaitivu area; they are accustomed to it.

but those tigers TRAPPED in WEST of A9 (after SLA get kili) will have to either commit suicide/surrender or die like flies.

I guess TAF placed an advertisment for foreign pilots. It reads we need ace ex figther pilot to fly a single proppeller plane. They will paid a million dollars to fly a contraption with attached bombs against F-7s and Migs, anti aircraft guns etc. Heard there were many takers. Please be creative in your next articles and punitham are qouting them and they usually do that for defence.lk articles.

Moshe Dyan said...

navindran,

again a LOAD of UNRELATED stuff from you.

the political solution IF and WHEN it comes, will NEVER satisfy tamil demands (that is the idea anyway) bcos it will be to UNIFY SL FURTHER. so there is no point asking for a political solution to ADDRESS THE DEMANDS OF WARRING PARTIES AND THEIR SUPPORTERS.

JVP insurgencies happened NOT bcos of economic downturn. in 1971, 1988 SL economy was doing fine. in 1983, 2001 when the economy did pretty badly, there were no insurgencies. the 1989 case is different bcos that was CREATED by the JVP.

unlike bush, MR is WINNING the war. bush couldn't benefit MUCH from iraqi resources BUT GOSL can benefit ENORMOUSLY from both resources and industry in the north.

vanni economy AS IT IS worth at least US$ 300 million which is roughly 1% of the economy and it is not contributing to SL now.

A Classic analysis and forethought.

I think our SLAF is already doing it.

But we need some inside info... unfortunately, I do not think even the LieTTE cadres do know their leaders whereabouts.

Navindran said...

I hope Sri Lanka achieves peace and the people of all the ethnic groups deserve peace and prosperity. Hopefully good people like some of the true meaning bloggers here will come forward to do that. Too long has the country been led by the wrong people (all the communities).

I always see people try to lump the dispora as one. I will give an example of a realitive of mine. She was born in Jaffna, see the LTTE running the show there and came to pradanea to study and worked in colombo for 7 years before leaving.

When the LTTE was running Jaffna they had stability and had removed many of those who were doing crime. As people who were not with the LTTE or the goverment informer, i.e ordinary people they were quite happy. Now even ordinary people in Jaffna are suspected.

In colombo she picked up sinhalese and speaks it fluently. Her mothers brother married a sinhalese lady for many years. She loves her sinhalese aunt and has many good sinhalese friends. I was suprised to see her holding her ex sinhalese lady clasmate's hands for 5 minutes before the sinhalese classmate and her husband left for Canada. It showed me how close they were.

Hence I posed a question to her whether she supported the LTTE. She side stepped the question by saying whats the point of fighting for so many years. It has achieved nothing. I know that in her heart she would not want the LTTE to lose, not becuase she likes them. More becuase she is afraid that after a victory things will be worst for tamils. This is because no leader in Sri Lanka really is geninue enough to put a path forward.

Neither will she want her friends or family (sinhalese and tamil ones) to die in a bomb attack in colombo or in the bombings in the North. Hence its sad that she's stuck between a rock and a hard place.

People also speak of economic mirales should the LTTE be defeated. The truth be told even at this stage with all the mismanagement, if not the LTTE then maybe the JVP? Lets not forget for those bewildered by political propaganda that things will become better. There was a JVP uprising before the LTTE and at that time Rohan was imprisoned in Jaffna because it was the safest place to keep him in Sri Lanka.

Only the actors keep changing but the storyline does not. Its more like a mega serial.

Navindran said...

DBS Jeyraj like to sing the postive then twist to the positive. Lets avoid that kind of writing. Example 50 KIA (bring out the truth) and then say UNP politicising it, then soldiers patriotic words.

Many styles of propagnada writting are there. Give the people a chance to read the truth once in a while. Calling the tigers desperate is not being unbaised also. I guess some new blog might eventaully prop up and have a real neutral prespective on the war.

And the Pro Ltters if you ever come here, don't just do it when the LTTE has won something. It all keyboard fighting.

Gross official reserves increased to a $4 billion this year after inflows from $1 billion from China, India $600 million and the rest primarily from ADB. This is enough to cover the trade deficit for the next 7 years. Instability in capital markets will not have an affect in the short term because funds have already been drawn down. There were also increases in remittences up by 10% and export earnings up by another 10% enough to act as a buffer for inflation. The country will only go bankrupt if it cannot maintain balanace of payments. Clearly we are nowhere near this.

If I were you I would go and invest in Lankan blue chips before the large overseas investors start pouring in money from next year.

But there is no way to fit his huge posterior into the tiny cockpit of a small crate like this. So he has directed his terrorist engineers come up with an improvised 'fat leader' rack to be attached to the Ziln and he will be strapped to it before the crate takes off.

But dear chaps, you know once this contraption is airborne the fat boy is going to soil himself and start passing noxious wind in mortal terror. Our chaps better be ready with gas masks to prevent breathing this stink if they want to live to see another day.

Navindran,

You seems to be one of the nice respectable guys produced by the rich culture of SL Tamil people. I know many other tamils like you and many tamil friends of mine still have same desirable atitude towards me and other sinhalese friends.

Let me tell you something else. I have lot of experience with communal riots that were conducted against tamil people during 1981 (Ratnapura, Kahawatta and Balangoda) and 1983 (Wellawatta, Dehiwala and Ratmalana) areas. In fact during 1983 July one tamil family (5 members) were hiding in my garage for two days before I escorted them to Ratmalana air port refugee camp with a police escort. I fed them happily and they were grateful too.

In my experience more than 90% of sinhala people did not participate in those riots. Only a few percentage of sinhala hooligans and small scale market venders did the damage.

Similarly more 90% of sinhala people are not against tamils. However, I am sure vast majority of sinhala people are against LTTE, b'cause of its barberic acts. LTTE is not different to those sinhala hooligans but hundred times vicious and burning with hate. Our hooligans are like newly opened soda bottles die quickly after few barberic acts. LTTE is continuing this for decades now. As you are well aware LTTE must be eradicated to have ever lasting peace in SL. Peace will bring prosperity to the country.

navindran,

What people support or not is not upto us. We cannot engineer feats of victory for LTTE to entertain its supporters. We do not engineer victories for the SLA either. We just report what happens. We are not in the entertainment, propaganda or prostitution business.

Hardcore LTTE supporters have gone silent all over. TNA MPs are an example. We have people closely monitoring their statements who have confirmed this. One example is Gajan Kumar Ponnambalam. In fact it was he who made a pressing statement to the LTTE to demonstrate its strength. But for us, the critical indicator is in the battlefield. LTTE counterattacked seven months after Jayasikurui. Its been over 14 months since this war began. There hasn't been anything even closely resembling that counter attack. Jayasikurui never went this far or broad. It never killed this many cadres but managed only to drive them back. It was launched by only two divisions. This war is being driven by 5 divisions in Wanni alone. The level of SLAF attacks and Navy attacks was negligible back then. Now major LTTE assets are being pounded weekly. The infantry and support weapons have become extremely sophisticated. We now have teams that won't hesitate to launch Red Arrow,Baktar Shikan missiles whenever it is required.

Banu was chosen to raise the LTTE flag for his artillery experience which gave the LTTE a special advantage after they wiped-out SLA artillery inside the base. This was his only significant achievement. Prabha was impressed with to the extend that he promoted him. Taking banu out is what SLA will do because in a battle like this, no LTTE leader is a good leader unless/until they are dead.

To us and other serving analysts in the military, mercenaries flying at least the first plane is a definite possibility right now. The pilot who chased him in Trinco was one of the best foreign trained pilots in the SLAF. He reported that evasion of a jet (F7) with that skill would require a wide array of experience and training. The pilot had reported that the TAF pilot must have a sound knowledge with regard to flying jets and dogfights, which experience hardly exists or is attainable outside the services of mainstream military.

Country's economy. Yes the government has borrowed money. But majority of the weapons, ammo, shells etc are being obtained from several foreign countries on a IOU basis. The deal is to use and then pay. So actually, no money is changing hands right now. But the government is shrewd. It knows very well that if the LTTE is defeated the influx of foreign funds for rehabilitation, resettlement, development, energy, roads and infrastructure etc would be much much more than the current expenses. Many people here in SL really believe in this solution right now. No government would be able to go back on it now.

The truth of the matter is that the LTTE's funds have shrinked, they are out of man power, the ports for bringing in weapons has reduced to only Pooneryn on the indian front, the vesels that brought in these weapons also are gone, I question those who still support the LTTE, the army is 30,000 strong, using MBRL's and there new fire blowing rockets, the maximum the LTTE has in artillery are a couple of 130mm Howitzers, which may not be used during the monsoon as you know they are pretty primitive.aswell as the TAF will have little capability to carry an offensive during the monsoon, mainly because the crafts must be lighter to fight in rainy conditions and hope and pray to stand a chance against the super sonic new m29's.The SL army will outlash the small pocket resistances, the LTTE's brigades are now weaker and after the battle near the trenches where 4 units of 5 were taken out man Im sure the rest of them are shaking in there pants. Right now the only way I see the LTTE winning is they have a tremendous birth rate increase and money falling from the sky. For the SL government Africa is the LTTE's next hub for black money, we need to bust seriously.

for you to think that they have a close relationship and bring race into the equation, you gotta be a racist...
Simple facts... we don't care which races work for LTTE, we don't care if their pilots are russians or pakis or whatever, as long as they threaten our country and her people they are our enemies and we will hunt to kill..
Drop the BS demands, eelam blah blah and work like rest of the Sri Lankans there can be peace...
untill such time, we will do what we have to do...
you just enjoy the ride my friend...
LTTE supporting rats like yourself deserve to see such a useless outfit get wipe out from the face of this earth

Sorry I have to give u a spray but pls read below(only if u like ofcoz). This was few sentences I did couple of weeks ago to post in the DW. But I thought some of the narrow minds in Sl not yet ready for something like this and so kept it for the right time.

Boys, u might disagree with me on this but I think my idea have some merits!

We, as Sri Lankans should push the agenda of making SL more ethnically tolerated and religiously liberal and less racially divided to avoid repeat of what I called the “Dark Age”

When English gave us independence (no disrespect to our forefathers who fought for the independence of our country and my humble head bow to them in sheer and utmost respect) the leadership and the countrymen (Sinhala, Tamil and Muslim ect) were spoon fed of “how to run the country and to behave”.

The problem was, the system we inherited from English was so distance to our cultures we made a meal of it. Instead of try and adapting a system which we can call “ours” we add, extended and patched-up the existing system many times it end up being a real sh#t hole.

We, as a country lost the respect to the law, have less moral on life of others and lacks the leadership. No wonder people like VP, Wijeweera and even clowns like Mervin have/had powers to call the shots.

But fortunately we are at the end of the Dark Age. In my theory Roman Emperor fell because of lack of communication! In my theory Sri Lanka will rise because of modern age of communication. INTERNET and TV and Radio and respected and credible journalism will help SL to rise again with strong leadership.

People will start understanding more about each other’s cultures and will respect them for who they are. More the people get informed better the decision making and will make them open-minded. People will be liberal thinkers instead of radicals and religiously moderate instead of extremists.

I still remember when I first applied for a job in SL my resume consists of Name: Race: Religion: and Date of Birth: and ect. Is it still the same? If so, it is a shame then! These are the small things we can easily fix. We should not have race and Religion on the resume and DOB for some extent too.

Other thing is in SL, we need to prohibit a political party register name base on ethnicity, religion or race. JHU, TNA , Muslim Congress and ect should be banned or asked to change the name and the constitution.

This is the most painful part for me! (even to propose this idea as I love Cricket and traditions I had to bite my tongue) I think SL should ask to SSC – Sinhalese Sports Club - , Tamil Union C & A Club, BRC - Burgers recreation Club, Moors Sports Club ect to drop the ethnicity part and change the constitution. If it is too hard to drop the whole name or change the years of tradition then simply call “SSC, TUCAC, BRC” ect with out trading as the whole ethnically divided names. Hats of to people who start NCC - Nondescripts Cricket Club -!!!!

I disagree with IntelAttack and similar sentiments that this is the best of Sri Lanka.

In fact I believe Sri Lanka is still weak and is only manifesting a mere fraction of it's capabilities. To stand up to a formidable enemy (somewhat militararily and quite strong in other aspects such as mobilising a global force, engaging in international crimes to raise money, use unconventional cum inhuman strategies and tactics to the hilt etc.) with such weakness and to get on top of it should give a clear message to all separatist/violent elements as to what Sri Lanka is potentially capable of. It is a moot point whether Sri Lanka will come of age in this respect, but the current era is as good as any to do so.

After all we are Modayas. It is dangerous to fight a war with Modayas. The intelligent should comprehend this about the Sinhalaya (here I tend to include all patriotic people) modaya kevum kanda yodaya. Sinhale is an enigma. It is moda serendipity as the LTTE may find out.

the exact opposite is true.

I agree....Moshe

They are waiting till the Monsoon. I think they are trying to do the same thing that the Russians did to unrattle the Germans in 1944-1945. The Russians waited till the winter get worse. without knowing the trick, The Germans advanced further into Russian territory. The Russian's theory was withdraw...The Russian winter was so unforgiving, in the end German heavy Machinery was useless against a shrewd enemy. That was the end of Nazi Germany.

They are trying to do the same thing here. the trenches will be a breeding ground for billions of Mosquito's.
LTTE's main weapons of destruction
(1)chikungunya,
(2)Dengue,
(3)diarrhea,
(4)other water/air bourne disease's
(5)Irritating rashes
(6)common cold
(7)High Fever etc

these are all natural causes of destruction.

It will be much harder to control our Heavy MBT's, and troop carriers, lorries and tractors on slippery and boggy terrain.

Hi Phantom-x

I do agree that they maybe in waiting, but the actual real question is do they have the numbers,or the man power to put on that sort of resistance, the Russians had the numbers to wait till winter and then attack, the reality was the Russian weaponry at the time could not equal the germans, the history of the AK47 will tell you this,Mr. Kaleejnikof was on border patrol, and built the AK47 to have a chance to even face the German machine guns at the time.they were in away out technologised.

Panhinda said...

Even after this much loss, I don't see any lessening of LTTE's determination to fight. I don't see any morale loss in LTTE enough for this to be a walk over. This is quite unfortunate.

This suggests one of two things. They aren't exposed to the same level of anti-LTTE propaganda that we do. Probably because most of it is NOT in Tamil. The other, they have damn good motivational methods. Some of their leaders such as Balakumaran is said to be excellent at motivating fighters.

This means we are not fucking with their minds enough to break them. There must be more of psyops and targeted propaganda tailored for LTTE. We should have a special unit just for this. We have to discredit their leaders, the Tamil diaspora and their methods. Focus on how diaspora live in comfort while they languish in mosquito infested trenches fighting for Tamil Diaspora's cause. How Tamils like them live happily and prosperously in Colombo among the Sinhalese. What kind of future they can have without suffering never ending hell hole Eelam. Point out the futility of Eelam in terms of its sustainability economically and politically. We can finish this early at less costs if we had these 'smarts' in place.

gareth40000 said...

Hi Panhinda

The LTTE leadership isnt demoralized, or slowly maybe it is,but the actual men and women on the battlefield are actually retreating when there commanders ask them to attack, this can mean but one thing, those men and women although they wear the LTTE uniform fear the army, the leadership may motivate them, but realistically when 1 by 1 there comrades on the left and right go missing they will succumb to the pressure,as well as when the commanders start seeing less faces when they are giving a speech they will know its game over, we need to start thinking not of how much land we have got to take more of there number, but in an astute way,not by running after them into an ambush.

With regard to Chechchnia sir, trust me the story is entirely different, they have no territory and there terrorist activities just are acts, but a warning to all my compadres, this is a battle for territorial integrity, but lets not forget that of the hearts and minds, which is an important problem we need to resolve.

Hello Gareth,

I just want to make damn sure we have all bases covered. What prompted me to say this was Brig. Jayawardena's comments on National Post.

"The guerrillas in this district are fighting fiercely to hold their line against the advancing government forces, the general says. "It's heavy fighting, almost every day. Our aim is to move forward; day by day we are moving forward."

- Brig. Jayawardena

VoT went silent yesterday after Kokkavil transmitter was taken by troops. In my opinion we should have a suitable substitute to fill this void. There are thangachi's out there in trenches with little transistor radio listening to news. We need to get in there and give them some bad news.

gareth40000 said...

Hi Foxtrot

Well the SLAF will play a vital role during the Monsoon, they will be able to actually criple the terrain advantage of the LTTE, with their constant attacks, aswell as the Navy will need to take a primary role in the invasion of Pooneryn, it will require a air, land and sea approach for the following base at it is surrounded in 3 sides by water, and the LTTE's naval fleet will be in hyper action there, after Pooneryn we need them to make sure the waters of Mullaithivu are cleared, although most of its "sea worthy" vessels have been destroyed, there are vessels whichh yet are waiting to come ashore and are waiting for a whole in the navys guard to creep in.

Pillayan damns Karuna and High Noon inevitable

Sri Lanka Guardian understands from reliable sources that Pillaiyan in a fit of anger and also reacting from his inner animosities against Karuna Amman screamed at him with such words as, “You are the Sinhalese b____r and only depending on Sinhala regime’s power and a traitor to the Tamil people.”

A Sri Lankan Guardian Special Report

(September 25, Colombo, Sri Lanka Guardian) Sri Lankan political scenario ever since independence has been a pathway of adversarial doom, a nemesis that continues to plague us and we see no end to it. Name calling, vengeance, disloyalty and political "turncoatism" have all been rampant and so much so it has become the political culture unique to this country.

Even the terrorists who are supposed to be tight-knit in their loyalty are no exception. Those in the so-called liberation struggle have shown deadly rivalries among reach other and during the last four or five decades, the country’s political achievements have included streams of blood being spilt. This nightmare continues.

Now we have the latest of the struggle which was of course obvious for sometime among the TMVP between the founder leader Vinayagamoorthy Muralidaran alias Karuna Amman and the current leader ad provincial chief minister Shivanethathurai Chandrakanthan alias Pillaiyan.

Sri Lanka Guardian understands from reliable sources that Pillaiyan in a fit of anger and also reacting from his inner animosities against Karuna Amman screamed at him with such words as, “You are the Sinhalese b____r and only depending on Sinhala regime’s power and a traitor to the Tamil people.” A strong ill-feeling towards each other has been developing between them for over a year now and is working towards a crescendo and the final scene may be enacted with what has become normal in Sri Lanka.

A High Noon can occur any time in the East!

As a result of this bitter combat struggle many TMVP cadres have gone missing and one of its political wing kneaders Thileepan was killed. Thileepan’s wife who lives in Kokkaddicholai along with other four members of her family in dreadfully unhealthy conditions was visited by a team from Sri Lanka Guardian for first hand reports about what has befallen the TMVP and what the people of the East are faced with as a result.

We cannot unfold her whole story because of security restrictions. She told us one day a few members of the TMVP came to her house and said Thileepan was killed in one of the camps in Batticaloa. She then proceeded to share her memories of their lives together. The story was typical just like every youth who has taken to the liberation struggle with great hopes but perishing in despair because the leadership was ego-manic and visionless.

The liberation struggle was nurtured by corrupt governments, both politicians and bureaucrats and insensitive outsiders who began to meddle in the country’s affairs.

“She has now lost her husband and she has four months old baby who will grow up and ask for his father,” her father in law, a labourer told the Sri Lanka Guardian team.

We have heard many saying Pillaiyan’s administration of the east is bad. Recently many widows of the area who have lost their husbands and also their sons in this liberation war attacked the chief minister for the dreadful conditions of their lives.

There is a kind of Arctic-Antarctic War going within the TMVP between the two leaders, Pillaiyan and Karuna Amman. Just a few days ago Pillaiyan and his two confidantes Azad Maulana and Raghu met some top level Indian experts at the Indian High Commission office in Colombo. It is presumed they discussed certain plans that could take shape in the very near future.

Chief Minister Pillaiyan also visited Tokyo recently and until the trip was finalized, the government was not aware that Raghu was also joining the Tokyo mission. In earlier reports Sri Lanka Guardian has revealed the background of Raghu and there is everything to be concerned about it.

Some members of the TMVP are quite concerned about the integrity of Azad Maulana. He is the spokesperson for Chief Minister Pillaiyan and also believed to be the media director of the TMVP. He has been known to release statements of great consequence that were suspect and on occasions found to be false. In some cases, the police reports gave different accounts conflicting with those released by Azad Maulana.

In the shooting incident where Radhika Devakumar was seriously wounded Azad Maulana called his media friends in Colombo within five minutes of the incident and blamed the LTTE for the outrage on a journalist. But the real story was totally different from that of Azad Maulana

A senior member of the TMVP told Sri Lanka Guardian that the media persons must be truthful and responsible but in the case of Azad Maulana he thinks he is a know-all professor but he is quite shallow and hardly knows anything of a serious nature. There was that apology of Pillaiyan about a statement he made claiming that an unofficial pro-LTTE website knowing about the assassination of Foreign Minister Lakshman Kadirgamar even before the terror mission took off that night to do their deadly deed.

Two days ago Azad Maulana and Raghu were found armed with 9mm pistols at the entrance to a Provincial Council meeting. A strong argument ensued when Wasantha, a political activist and colleague of Minister Basil Rajapaksa questioned about them being armed. Wasantha has been quite critical about the work of these two people in the Eastern Province Political Council.

This incident occurred the day after Pillaiyan told the US Ambassador Robert Blake that all non-cadre personal must disarm. One wonders how many of Pillaiyan’s non-cadre colleagues carry arms! Because of the LTTE threat many senior members of the government carry arms. Pillaiyan keeps telling foreign diplomats that the TMVP likes to disarm but the government is against it.

Time is running out in the east. There are enemies within and without and there is no one there to take strong independent decisions. Every one, it seems are depending on every one else afraid to take decisions. It is chaos entrenched and out of this more chaos will be generated and the outcome will be anarchy. We are well on the path to reach that desolation. This is Sri Lanka 2008; the pointer is that 2009 will be worse just like 2008 was to 2007 and 2007 to 2006 going back in streams of blood and horror to 1958 when Sri Lanka took leave of its senses.

There is a gradual deterioration of security in the east. The problem seems to be compounded by other issues associated with TMVP. Presence of Karuna does not bode well for Pallians leadership. He probably feels threatened by his presence. This needs to be resolved soon. It better for everyone if Karuna left the country. Pallian is becoming unpopular with the people. He probably feels there is no sence of purpose since all development projects in the region is done by the central govt with Basil. He asked for provincial police powers that was not given. They wanted their people in the military that was not accommodated either. I am not sure what will work here but something needs to be done here soon.

To lose control of the situation in the east would be a huge mistake . Hope the govt realizes that and gives pillian what ever power he needs . I cannot see much wrong with giving police powers to them .

Karuna should not be interfering in the situation in the east at this point IMHO . He is of better use in other areas .

there were several queries on LTTE reinforcements and gathering for a counter of sorts based on DW latest post. one query was particularly on how SLN and SLAF can contribute and another on whether SLAF cannot engage these.

here's the response from defence.lk
Air Force Fighter jets pound terror positions - Kilinochchi
Sri Lanka Air Force fighter jets pounded LTTE reinforcements detected in the Akkarayankulam area this afternoon (Sept 25).

Air Force spokesperson , Wing Commander Janaka Nanayakkara speaking defence.lk said that the air strike was taken at 2.20 PM targeting an LTTE gathering 1 Km North of Akkarayankulam Tank bund.

army.lk had this to say
Reinforcement Attempts Challenged
KILINOCHCHI: TIGER terrorists trying to get their fighting units reinforced in the general deep north on the AKKARAYANAKULAM Tank bund on KILINOCHCHI - MULLAITTIVU district borders received a surprise beating when the Air Force fighter jets this afternoon (25) at about 2.20 p.m. bombed those gatherings.

Terrorists offering resistance to ground troops were trying their maximum to break into troop-held areas with the support of their reinforcements when the fighter craft interdicted. Pilots said the target neutralized their fighting capability to a greater degree.

Panhinda said...

Ali,

Police powers was one of the first things he asked for. I really see no harm in giving each province control of law-and-order. People will soon lose respect for him since he will be seen as someone who cannot get anything done for the locals. This will harm the security in the region. This is what "power sharing" is about. We have to build trust with these people and allowing them to look after local affairs i.e. "self-determination" is what they are asking and its reasonable.

What happened to the LTTE attack?

Well that's the million dollar question isn't it?

Chechnya is calm but the Chechen fighters have not been wiped out. In fact its under war lord Ramzan Kadyrov who switched sides. This is why it looks as if the war is over but it is not. If you can understand Russian please read this for more information http://www.chechenpress.info/

silentknight,

Isn't that good? The Tigers are coming to us now as opposed to later.

How can SLAF and SLN help? As we have seen so far, SLN has done much of its job by destroying the large LTTE ships. Now it must disrupt logistical movements etc while guarding vital areas like Trincomalee etc.

SLAF's role is being played better and better each day. The attack helicopters provide some serious day and night infantry support while the faster jets pount LTTE assets and targets its leadership for decapitation. The radar stations and air-to-air defences kicked in at the last round and soft areas further south are now fairly protected.

nilavan,

the guardian has its axe to grind with Pillayan so careful what you read, where you read and for what reason you read it.

Great. Isnt this what was discussed here when there were Announcements by the ltte to REJOIN them through VoT?
Hope a new Tamil channel be broadcast on the Same Frequency so that the REAL NEWS will get to the Entraped people as well as misguided youth in the trenches.
Or is the VoT operates from a Different place?

Sri Lankan troops on outskirts of Tamil Tiger HQ: army chief
57 minutes ago
COLOMBO (AFP) — Sri Lankan government forces have advanced to the outskirts of the northern Tamil Tiger rebel capital of Kilinochchi, the army chief announced Thursday.
The government, which pulled out of a Norwegian-brokered ceasefire in January, wants to capture the town and deal what would be a major military and psychological blow to the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) rebels.
"Our forces are around four kilometres (2.5 miles) from Kilinochchi town. In fact we can see some of the buildings," Lieutenant General Sarath Fonseka said.
He also said the leader of the LTTE, Velupillai Prabhakaran, was "now a caged animal."
"Our military campaign won't stop until we liberate our motherland from the LTTE," Fonseka added.
Kilinochchi, the political capital of the LTTE's northern mini-state, is where the rebels have hosted visiting foreign dignitaries and peace brokers. They maintain their police headquarters, courts and own bank there.
Fonseka, who was speaking at a book launch in the capital Colombo, did not say when he expected the town to fall. But he suggested a fresh offensive would begin in the coming days.
"We will fire the first shots towards Kilinochchi town next week," he said.
There was no comment from the LTTE, and independent confirmation of the current front-line position is difficult to obtain because journalists are barred from the area.
However, foreign aid workers who evacuated the north last week have confirmed that the fighting has drawn steadily closer to Kilinochchi.
Meanwhile, Sri Lanka's defence ministry reported that 36 rebels and one soldier were slain in the latest fighting across the north, where government troops are attacking the LTTE on several fronts.
According to ministry figures, the Tamil Tigers have lost some 6,898 fighters since January. Military authorities say 673 soldiers have also died during the same period.
Casualty figures also cannot be verified.
Aid organisations say the recent fighting has forced around 230,000 people from their homes in Kilinochchi and nearby Mullaittivu -- a major LTTE military base.
Sri Lanka has poured a record 1.5 billion dollars into the war effort this year, and hawkish President Mahinda Rajapakse has ruled out any return to peace talks.
"Our government would only be ready to talk to this illegal armed group when it is ready to commit itself to decommissioning of its illicit weapons and dismantling of its military capability, and return to the democratic fold," Rajapakse said Wednesday in a speech to the UN General Assembly.
The government argues that the rebels only used the peace process to bring in more weapons. The rebels, however, say the island's ethnic Sinhalese majority were never sincere about peace.
The rebels have been fighting for an independent homeland for the Tamil minority since 1972. Tens of thousands have died in the conflict.

VoT is broadcast from within Vanni. They hijacked the old Rupavahini relay station in Kokavil for broadcasts.

They take maximum use of radio to control people in the region. They have also banned people from listening to govt Tamil broadcasts. They apparently have informers in each village who dob in people who listen to other stations. However, I cannot see them doing this any longer under the circumstances. If we are to reach out to the people there, radio is the best way. We can pirate the VoT frequency as you say.

But if we hit the VoT all the Worlds Media Movements will take arms against us.

Dear Navindran,

"The LTTE did not have Killi or Elephant Pass yet they came back."

The LTTE came back because it had still controlled large parts of Eastern Province from which it drew many recruits. A large part of the previous war was won by Karuna and the Batticaloa fighters.

"Its sad that the Polticians of this country do not see the need for a political solution in parallel to really help bring peace."

A "political solution" (however ill-defined and vague you leave it) will only work once the LTTE departs from the scene. As long as the LTTE is there, it will sabotage whatever solution you pull out of your hat.

"Likewise Mahindha is desperately trying to get the people to forget the economic difficulties and focus their mind on the war."

And he is succeeding, because most people believe that the economy let alone Sri Lanka's future will always be in the dumps as long as the LTTE is there to ruin any progress.

"Napolean was an arti man. He used it to full advantage and then it was also his handicap when he did not understand the realities of infantry warfare."

Who are you talking about- Bhanu or Napoleon? Bhanu knows artillery but little else, which is probably why DW referred to him as "useless"- in the sense that Bhanu cannot lead offensive operations. Balraj, not Bhanu had brought victory to the LTTE at EPS.

"She was born in Jaffna, see the LTTE running the show there and came to pradanea to study and worked in colombo for 7 years before leaving."

Why did she leave Jaffna?

"When the LTTE was running Jaffna they had stability and had removed many of those who were doing crime."

Yet the people were sufficiently disappointed in the LTTE that they helped the SLA during Op. Riviresa by identifying LTTE locations for artillery/air strikes.

Dear rana & panhinda

"This suggests one of two things. They aren't exposed to the same level of anti-LTTE propaganda that we do. Probably because most of it is NOT in Tamil. The other, they have damn good motivational methods. Some of their leaders such as Balakumaran is said to be excellent at motivating fighters."

Correct except for the last bit about Balakumaran. Contrary to popular thought, fancy rhetoric/speeches does not change much at the battlefield. A soldier can get pumped up from words only to lose it all once he sees real combat. Speeches don't work on veterans either, unless they're given by even more respected veterans (whereas Balakumaran is simply Fat Ass's pet intellectual.)

"This means we are not fucking with their minds enough to break them. What kind of future they can have without suffering never ending hell hole Eelam."

It would be hard to convince Tamils in the N-E that their brethren in Colombo are "living happily" given the paramilitaries' extortion, police cordon-and-search operations, and Gotabhaya's "welcome" policy of telling Tamils to go back to the N-E.

There are two reasons why we cannot exploit the LTTE's very glaring internal problems:

1) Distrust of Tamils. DW mentioned to me a few months ago that the govt. is encouraging problems between Karuna and Pillayan because a unified TMVP could return to the LTTE fold. With the current setup, the govt can back one faction if the other leans towards the LTTE.

The problem with this "divide-and-rule" strategy is that the average Tamil sees right through it, and therefore these anti-LTTE factions gain no credibility among the Tamils. Karuna, Pillayan, Douglas, and Siddharthan are correctly seen as Mahinda's stooges, and the Tamils are left with only the LTTE as a symbol of unity.

It can be argued that Tamil groups cannot be trusted based on their conduct over the last 10-15 years. EPDP and PLOTE for example sometimes praised the LTTE's fighting ability in their newspapers during the 1990s. And then there has been the ever-present problem of the LTTE infiltrating into these groups. But the problem, more often than not, could be traced to the weaknesses of previous governments that allowed the LTTE to get the upper hand. Most Tamils in the 1990s, whether paramilitary or civilian, believed that the LTTE could never be beaten given the government's inability to fight well.

2) Sinhalese ignorance of Tamil language/culture. If the Sinhalese cannot trust anti-LTTE Tamils, as 1) above suggests, then the next logical step would be to learn the language and enough of the culture to infiltrate into LTTE areas and cause havoc. However, for the most part this has not happened because we don't have many people with the appropriate intercultural skills. For this same reason, Sinhala police are not effective in apprehending LTTE agents in Colombo (the 2 most effective policemen were Nilabdeen and Jeyaratnam, neither Sinhalese).

The truth is that we don't need any sophisticated psy-ops rubbish to influence Tamil minds. We just have to provide a credible, democratic alternative to the LTTE.

wijayapala said...

DW & dA, there are some parts of your analysis which I do not understand, probably because I don't have a full knowledge of the ground situation. My intent is not to contradict you but rather to get a better understanding of what you meant.

"Needless to say this is potentially a very dangerous situation for the LTTE. It could release two more offensive formations and a Mechanized Infantry Division capable of offensive as well as defensive (holding) operations within a matter of weeks from now. It could also guarantee safe passage to the military and drastically improve logistics by linking the north with the south."

I take it that you are referring to the 53 & 55 Divisions, the former of which has the MIB and the Air Mobile Brigade. The release of these divisions into the Wanni would leave only 2 divisions, the 51 & 52 to defend Jaffna. Will they be enough? During Eelam War III, Vadamarachchi East was never entirely cleared, even though the 54 Division controlled EPS and Vettilaikeni-Iyakkachchi areas. When the Tigers attacked EPS in 2000, Balraj landed in this region from the eastern seas and established a blocking force that prevented the garrison from getting reinforcements from Jaffna. Jaffna will still be somewhat vulnerable to LTTE attacks from the sea.

"The Mulaitivu jungles have been systematically conquered by the 59 Division to ensure that a Thoppigala-like situation would not arise in the Wanni where the LTTE gets holed -up inside a dense jungle."

Wouldn't they be holed up in Mullaitivu north?

"A situation slightly similar to this occurred during Operation Jayasikurui. Military operations stopped and the gains were completely reversed by the LTTE in seven months. They had the civilians with them that time."

My recollection of Op. JS is that it was stopped after the LTTE retook Kilinochchi in 1998. I am not aware of the role that civilians had played.

I think LTTE still got more than 5000 good and strong fighters and another 5000 to help fighters by extending logistic support.

Above estimates are done by looking at the ferocity they are exhibiting at defence lines.

My estimates are seems to be bit higher than SLDF estimates. I hope SLDF estimates are correct. Even with my estimates they cannot make a useful recounter attack b'cause they are fully stretched and engaged handful.

SLDF should check their reserves by creating another front at east of A9from Puliyan kulam general area to Nedunkeni general area. I am sure LTTE cannot defend that area without further weakening ongoing battles. Progress of the new front will tell us actual strength of LTTE as at present.

This should be done b4 monsoon b'cause if Kili is to be captured b4 monsoon LTTE may send 200-300 strong team through this corridoe to make havoc GOSL controlled areas.

Another way test their strength is to use navy to attack Nachchikuda from the sea starting from already secured area south to Nachchikuda while occupiying the enemy with TF1 and SLAF.

If LTTE is really strecthed our harvest can be rewarding.

The lowest layers of their fighting cadre are motivated through indoctrination. They worship their leader first even before mentioning their race. If you listen to the last words of the Black Tiger, they die for their leader, not for their race. If Tamils were dying to save themselves from "Sinhala oppression" then there will be Tamil Diaspora and Colombo based fools in there too fighting and dying. Except, the ones who are being sacrificed are the uneducated poor ignorant fisher folks who can be easily made into servants of someone. This is an organisation based on the personal cult of Prabaharan. There are similar doctrines in North Korea Kim Jong Ill and his father. There is a process in place to program their minds with the glory of their leader, the pride of his victories and also demonising the Sinhalese. Whatever democratic and political package is offered to Tamils, these zombies will follow the leader unconditionally.

The psyops I mentioned is specifically aimed at de-programming this indoctrination process. They must know the Sinhalese aren’t as bad as they were made aware with good examples. They must know Prabakaran is not their saviour with good convincing examples. Finally they must know the goal they are fighting for is cannot be achieved through good examples. I doubt there is any intellectual capacity with the govt establishment to do this right, but I thought I should mention it anyway just in case.

in some countries the word BASTARD is used affectionately.

anyway ananda singari is a CUNNING BASTARD as long as he remain a RACIST.

is he a RACIST?

unfortunately yes until he gets the COURAGE to drop the term TAMIL from his TAMIL TAMIL TAMIL united liberation front (TULF) and also drop TAMIL RACIST DEMANDS accpeting that there are NO TAMIL AREAS in SL. he can rename it ELAM or peoples united liberation front.

of course he has more courage than TNA ARSELICKERS but he can do better. he MUST do better.

this was the same debate that drew DAYAN JAYATILEKE and DOUGLAS DEVANANDA in a DIPLOMATIC level!!!

the same happened with my friend KAATI. he fist said sinhala ppl cannot come beyond vavuniya (they have already come!!!); then he agreed BUT said muslims cannot come beyond vavuniya and after that he said thay can but muslim extremists cannot come beyond vavuniya and then he DISAPPERED which is SAD. i want him here and FACE the reality.

this is NAIVE and INNOCENT racism.

i have some regard for OPEN RACISTS like VEZAPILLAI but no regard for undercover racists.

the need to shed racism is URGENT. after vanni is captured SLA is going to stay and nasty things CAN happen.

e.g. a few rotten guys WILL DEFINETELY go around fcuking thangachchis as the chrishanthi kumaraswami, etc, etc, etc, etc, case.

IF ppl look at it from a racist pov no matter how INNOCENT they are, things WILL get out of hand.

Moshe,

I agree mate.

When one fellow or a group of fellows became sic with racism it naturally spread across all sectors. This is what happened in SL and many other places.

After independance tamils were told and tranined to become racist by their leaders. Sinhalese also were spoiled by people like Banda and Siril Mathive. The result is wide spread racism today. Those tamils living in western countries spread racism like a virus.

We identify racism as when some people think they are superior than others. This is exactly what happened in India throughout its history. They are still divided on caste, race and religion. Tamils brought this superiority complex to SL and took us 100 years back while other nations are progessing.

couldn't have said better. well done.

also take a look at INNOCENT racism which is WIDESPREAD and far more dangerous than OPEN racism bcos they can pass through "filters" against racism just like LTTE infiltrators operating in colombo. if they dressed in tiger uniform they can NEVER plant bombs in buses, etc. so they come in civilian dresses.

i bet this is the MOST dangerous lot. you don't know when and HOW they attacked you until its too late.

they say, "i love love love love sri lanka. mmmmmma! i'm a patriot. that is why i want RACIST FEDERALISM"

after the LTTE is annihilated, ONLY THIS group can CONTINUE the tamil elam struggle peacefully. why peacefully? bcos if they use violence what happened to the LTTE will happen to them. see the danger?????

but i must add. MR is using this type of guys VERY skillfully. he keeps them close BUT doesn't give a flying fart about their RACIST demands.

Hi Moshe,

I would like to give a good example parallel to what happened in SL. I was working in Fiji Islands for nearly seven years as an expatriate. During my stay, I studied how racism is originated from indenture labourers with indian origin. This bacame a cancer in Fiji and within few years very innocent and friedly indigeneous Fijians were sic of the racism and finally got pissed off. Within last 15 years they had couple of military coupes and racist indians left Fiji to find green pastures in Canada, USA, UK, Australia, NZ etc. etc.

Other indians most of them are low caste people still live happily with other locals.

This what Indians do wherever they go. Top caste people spread the germ and then used terms like genocide, racism and state terrorism to their advantage to have better life in elsewhere.

Most of the Canadian tamils did the same and still doing it.

Heylo there rana,

That is certainly one school of thought. I wish it was that straight forward. There are many other variables that you havent put into the equation. There was nationalistic elements from all sides. At that stage, racism was't politically taboo as it is now. Angagarica Dharmapala used nationalism extensvely to mobilise Sinhalese. Then Moslems rioted against Sinhalese in 1915. The Tamil Vellahla leadership also played a major role. However as a majority the Sinhalese have a responsibility to stay calm and focused to keep the nation united despite all these provocations. The Sinhala leadership wasn't mature enough not to punish the entire Tamil community for the fault of their leaders. The entire subcontinent is full of such examples. But because some other fool does it, does not mean we have to do the same.

Kilinochchi

Secret of present military success is the separation of politics from military. And we need to keep it as it is. Mainly SLFP politicians' work to rely on military success and in fact taking of K'chi is not good for the health of SLA.

Many people are waiting for fall of K'chi. I am not military expert but I firmly believe SLA should not take K'chi unless it is military wise approved and should not agree to political influence such as taking K'chi and go for elections.

Up to my limited knowledge I am not sure about MSR for K'chi if we don't have A9. If SLA take K'chi without A9 I think it gives a good chance to LTTE to cutoff other MSR and isolate troops in K'chi. In contrast we have A32 very secured MSR in west. Thus if SLA advance along that towards Pooneryn while attacking west of A9, I think it is safest strategy.

This will cut off 100% south indian supply root for LTTE, no sea tiger activities in western seas, thus SLN just need to be in defensive mode there while get more chances to go offensive in eastern seas, eliminate south indian fishermen issues and refugee issues and make Jaffna more safe from Palali side.

On the other hand, K'chi is the symbol of de facto peelam state. But even without taking it and just keep fighting daily around K'chi and making 10 LTTE cadres dying per day for the peelaam capital it automatically becomes civilans less unfunctional ruined city. Thus even without footing there SLA can negate its affects which is the LTTE administration. However fall of K'chi and fall of diaspora funds, fall of LTTE moral, rise in SLA moral and public support will be postponed.

A9

SLA never tried to take A9. But it is unsafe to LTTE as well, as SLA close to it. I think SLA may take A9 within few days if they can attack K'chi, Mankulam and Puliyankuam simultaneously. In this way SLA can take the fighting into east of A9 and there by make it safe for civilian passage. But dragging a fight along A9 will not be good for SLA as it contradicts SLA's safe corridor for civilians and also it may increase own casualties.

53D and 54D

I don't think it is a good idea to advance these two divisions into wanni soon. As LTTE remove cadres from there at some point of time LTTE may withdraw (of course, tactically) from that front after that they can walk free way. As LTTE need more cadres to protect vezapillai and Mulathiv area where he lives and given the daily vanishing rate this can happen.

Civilians

As per GSL all the civilians in wanni are innocent and forcefully kept by LTTE. Opposite is civilians are with LTTE, against SLA. Truth should be some where in between. There will be some hard core civilians truly supporting LTTE while majority is simply helpless under a military group.

Good point is SLA has correctly identified the crucial factor if this part of war as these wanni civilians. Rather than waiting they take a risk, oppose LTTE and march even risking their lives which is unlikely to happen, GSL need to work more hard on these factor. Separation of civilians from LTTE make wanni a free play ground for SLDF and just seal the victory.

Heavy weapons

I am not sure how LTTE will use 122mm and 130mm arti guns in the final stage. Can some one tell how deal with these guns lately.

TAF

It is highly likely LTTE send tincans for another show. I think SLAF need at least 30 mins of TAF flying time to intercept. Thus TAF just need to stay less than that time in the sky, drop the two or four bombs some where, go back unhurt, usual propaganda (they can add "SLAF said it downed a zlin" with good pics will make diaspora happy and feel LTTE is still there.

I don't think LTTE burry these tin cans like in east they did for big guns rather they use it. But also don't think they send a suicide mission this early. SLAF/SLA have to down them this time before they take the U turn. Rather than sending their pilots on a suicide mission LTTE might use them on hijacking SLAF/ commercial asset and using it.

Vigilance

Recent news of arresting 10+ black tigers in south and recovering of suicide jackets confirms LTTE is working on their usual recipe for south. Public need to be more vigilant while MI needs to avoid next LTTE 'innovation'.

_______________________________________________

Recently exposed - Dulith Herath. I really don't know he runs LNP or not. Contrary to their statement, they don't put SL news paper news only there but mostly tamilnut articles relating to defense. This gives some credibility to tamiznut while it gives a chance to make counter attack from the opposing front. Problem is admin is biased to LTTE side. It is like playing cricket in Australia. People who oppose LTTE were treated an unfair manner while LTTE supporters enjoy the space.

________________________________________________

Out side the battle field, when we deal with LTTE we need to do it civilized decent way. "Game chandiya" method is not acceptable in the INGO,UN, media and international fronts. This is some thing we and our GSL ministers need to keep in mind. We need to defeat LTTE in these fronts 'professionally'.

_______________________________________________

It is intersting that GenSF always keep 'remaining LTTE fighters' around 4000. I think MI has told him it is the number we need to give to public so that this will work. And for his credit, our diaspora has just one complaint against him. That is not saying the right number.

Honestly, I missed that part some how. I like to belive SLA make thier plans according to ground conditions. I guess even now SLA is close to K'chi bcuz they wanted to cross the trench before it is extended to A9. Chances are more they sorround Nachchikuda and take it before K'chi.

You need to attack your enimy at a time and place it doesn't expect you. When it comes to western flnak choices are quite obvious. Thus it will be a battle of talant and smartness. LTTE know very well how scary SLA walking to pooneryn rather than K'chi. That's why they started building the trench from nachchikuda side rather than K'chi side.

I didn't understand why SLAF didn't destroy this trench when they were making it. But now I see SLA kill LTTE cadres while fighting in the bunkers built by LTTE, in the trench built by LTTE.

On the other hand if SLA take K'chi for sure we need to capitalise our propaganda on that. I am sure our politiccas will score among the southern mass but I highly doubt we get required advantage in the international front.

Ninja,

Yes mate. I pointed that too in my previous postings couple of days ago. SLDF wanted secure A32 up to Poonarin but earth bunt delayed it and also casulty figures were high. That is why they went around the Akkarayan tank towards Kili. So far good but they should not proceed to take Kili by force sacrifycing too many boys instead go back to west again while protecting Kili front. Once we have Poonarin we can go towards Paranthan and surround Kili.

That is my plan. However I slso know Gen. Fonseka knows better.

ninja,
Other thing thing bro. I forgot to tell I will not say MR is the best president ever, yet. I will wait at least another couple of years for that but I will categorically say Gota R is the best DS we ever got.

Thanks mate.

Yes, GenSF knows better than us who are here in AC rooms with the only whepon key board. For me, I just need him to do his job without getting influenced by our stupid politicians for any reason.

When I said stupid politicians..

MR himself is probably great. But we have to go for these useless parliment, presidential, PC etc elections. Apart from MR other ministers (MPs - 1?) have done very little service. They all servive on military. That's the issue we need to avoid.

SLA, LTTE clash in Mukamaalai FDL
[Friday September 26 2008 05:42:32 AM GMT]
Sri Lanka Army (SLA) and the Liberation Tigers of Tamileelam (LTTE) clashed for Thursday around 2:00 a.m for nearly half an hour, according to sources close to SLA.
Kodikaamam police said it recovered Thursday a body of a male, who was caught in a landmine explosion in the no man zone between SLA and LTTE FDL positions.

The SLA claimed that the youth killed is a combatant of the LTTE unit which tried to penetrate into SLA held area Thursday early morning.

The body of the youth, that appears to be more than twenty years old, had both legs blown off and bullet wounds all over the body, police said.

Kodikaamam police handed over the body to Jaffna Teaching Hospital mortuary on directive issued by Chaavakachcheari magistrate to have it identified within the coming five days.

The SLA did not provide details of its own casualties.

Special Forces are ground based.

Can we not compliment them with some dedicated air support with some good coms?

Here's a scenario..

SF unit of 8. I small chopper with guns (?) missiles (?) logistical supplies. SF goes a hunting. The chopper is stationed in SLA territory but in constant touch with the SF unit. The difference here is rather than requesting support from SLAF the chopper is dedicated to the particular team. SF Unit spots terror concentration/logistical facility etc which is best suited to be taken out by an air mission. SF calls for SF chopper unit. Needful is done. 2. The chopper can deliver additional arms, munitions other equipment, food, medicines, also evacuate and drop a couple of fresh troops to the engagement point.

Training should be done with SF and the chopper units (we can have only a few for specialised ops) also belonging to SF.

Similarly SF can be integrated with Naval craft.

Do you get my drift? What do you think guys?

Ninja said...

thambala

I think the air mobile unit located in Jaffna is like that or more than that.

Rana said...

Thambala,

mate, we have several type of choppers and they all not good for combat missions. Bell is good for only transporting troops. Hind or MI 24 is a good combat one but we have only few to dedicate for few teams. We also need to keep at leas couple for emergencies. Usually it is not done in Afganistan too.

Second factor is, it is too dangerous to park choppers closer than 5km from the front battle lines b'cause of heavy artillery fire and stray shots.

What we are doing right now is the best and proven tactics for the type of battle we have at hand.

Here is our beloved General in a public address. Air Force chief was also present. Just a thought that came to my mind. Is it wise for two very important leaders to be together in a public appearance. Whole of Sri Lanka needs these two great sons of Sri Lanka to continue their service for the country. There are ruthless tigers prowling around to harm them. No matter how tight the security they could sneak in. Long life to our Generals....

Hi Guys.

Human right violations of GOSL is seems to be worrying UN, USA, UK, Aussies and some Europian countries with hollier than thou attitude.

USA had the worst human right record in recent history but HE. Blake seems to forgot it.

UK violated all known human rights for centuries in so called common wealth countries about 50 or 60 years back. Even recently shooting eight times and killing an innocent youth at a public station.
yet HE Wilson seems to be a guardian of human rights.

Aussies killed aboroginal people in masses and took their young children from parents forcefully away. Their PM Kevin Rudd apologise for that recently.

We do not have to elaborate on Germany, France or Viking countries like Norway or Sweeden b'cause their cupboards are full of skeltons from the past.

They are all now say sorry for the past and trying to saints at present advocating us how to behave. They all did those attrocities for people in other countries. Atleast we are violating human rights of our own people to stop following human right violations by LTTE:
1. Killing innocent civilians by planting bombs.
2. Killing innocent civilians by suicide bombs.
3. Extorsion of their own people.
4. Forced child recruitment for the above acts.

list will go on and on.

Well GOSL is going to stop this by eliminating VP and murderous clan.

We will also say sorry after for human right violations, if there is any.

Our forces have breached the nothern FDL early this morning. it was reported that they have demolished LTTEs 3 defense line by 12.30 and they were deep into 3 Km. It seems that there is nothing to stop our forces until they reach EP in few days.Mechanised infantry divison is leading the movement together with infantry forces. Operation was started after our interligence learnt that LTTE moved many of their heavy guns to Kilinochi.

thnks for updates DW.

"The LTTE must strike back before the Monsoon hits. It is imperative. If the Tigers wait till October, the Army would have reached Paranthan. LTTE units stationed at Muhamalai,"

i am strongly agree with you this point.i am aware of describe this right now.

in 1990's LTTE took most chances during the monsoons cuz of real guerrilla experiance they had & Army didnt perform small groups gurilla type attacks.mainly during monsoon Army main battle tanks and other armour vehicles got stuck in mud and floods.
but current situation difference nw we have genuine 4X4 commando teams with real combat experience and carrying huge amount explosives and weapons than 2 T55 tanks.
so when the monsoon comes it will badly effect to LTTE in so many ways.and fat pig cant move like those days.

MR undoubtedly is a good president. Only because he has the will to wage this war according to the SLDF's plans.

However, for him to be the best he should prove himself with good governace. We have opted to ignor the corruption, waste an inefficiency of this regime only because the war effort out-weighs all the other ills.

For him to be the best and to be remembered by generations to come there should be political will to change this system. Long term genuine goals should be set to develop Sri Lanka. There should not be hidden agendas to earn a quick buck in this development plan, because my friends, we need to move forward badly. We are being pulled back not by the war but by our set of politicians.

Think about it less than 300 robbers (from all political parties)ruining the country's future.

They are coming in waves. Those who fled earlier are now fighting. Every 3 minute artillery is fired. Requests for artillery and mortar support coming from troops over their radio sets. Hinds giving round the clock CAS. No one has slept or changed their clothes in days. The decisive battle for Kilonochi is on the way. The CS attacks have become frequent. Thousands of gas masks have been sent to the front. Curiously no artillery support for them only motar.

Kilonochi hospital is vital for them. This is one building we should block them from using. The roads in and out from this area can be disrupted. They don;t have gas masks - CS gas them out of their fox holes. The motar and artillery requests come over radio. It can take a few shots to accurately guide munitions on target. Loitering UAV has been suggested a few times for eye in the sky to guide stand off weapons. I am not sure if UAV is used for this purpose at all. If not, there is no logical reason why UAV cannot hover over the battle ground giving realtime info for frontline support.

Dear Moshe Dyan,

"you used to call SINHALA ppl "SINHALA MODAYAS"."

Not all Sinhala people. Just small-minded persons. Although I am worried that if any Israelis stumble on this website and see your writings, they might think that all Sinhalese are Modayas who can't even spell "Moshe Dayan's" name properly.

"anyway ananda singari is a CUNNING BASTARD as long as he remain a RACIST.

this is NAIVE and INNOCENT racism.
"

See this is exactly what I'm talking about. A True Modaya says contradictory things that don't add up. How is somebody CUNNING while NAIVE and INNOCENT **at the same time**?????

"i have some regard for OPEN RACISTS like VEZAPILLAI but no regard for undercover racists."

So the resident Modaya believes that Fat Ass, who has murdered countless people and plunged Sri Lanka into darkness, is a better human being than someone like Anandasangaree who has the b@lls to stand up to him without a gun (let alone referring to Anandasangaree as "undercover racist"). The Modaya would rather lick the Fat Ass than even try to reach out to Anandasangaree.

I find this fear of an unarmed man to be quite pathetic.

"is he a RACIST?

"unfortunately yes until he gets the COURAGE to drop the term TAMIL from his TAMIL TAMIL TAMIL united liberation front (TULF) and also drop TAMIL RACIST DEMANDS accpeting that there are NO TAMIL AREAS in SL. he can rename it ELAM or peoples united liberation front.
"

Then you have no problems calling Sarath Fonseka a RACIST for talking about the need for SINHALA NATION (ironically a term used by LTTE supporters to call Sri Lanka) to make sacrifices. Are you going to ask Fonseka to have the COURAGE to retract what he said??

Or will you call Uncle Gota to task for ordering Tamils in Colombo to go back to "Tamil areas" in the North?????

"this is why racism of ALL forms ESPECIALLY the INNOCENT TYPE MUST be raped."

Kindly explain how one "rapes" racism? Are you thinking of "raping" JHU's racism?

Basically dear Moshe, it comes down to whether one believe RACISM is more dangerous than MODAYAISM in Sri Lanka. I humbly that at every turn in our history, the MODAYAS have messed things up for everyone. If anyone deserves to be raped, it should be a Modaya.

By clicking the person's name you can view the profile which inc. in the URL.
However easier solution is to point the mouse to the person's name which should show you the url details at bottom of the web screen.
DW's profile number is on top right with (DefenceWire Profile ID is 06358848115700373983 ), just above where you would post the comments.
Hope that helps.
